Elvis 'If I Can Dream' TV Advert & First Reviews: The new album is still getting massive publicity, Priscilla has been on every key talk show and the TV adverts have started running.
CLICK HERE to YouTube to watch this rather good UK TV advert.
Unfortunately the media reviews being posted are not so positive.
The Los Angeles Times notes "Elvis Presley 'If I Can Dream' with orchestra misses the mark" - The problem with the new set is that the organizing principle equates “bigger” with “better,” assuming that a boatload of strings, wind and percussion instruments automatically enhances Presley hits such as “It’s Now or Never,” “Love Me Tender,”
|
|
“Burning Love,” “How Great Thou Art,” “In the Ghetto” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” By and large, they don’t.
The UK newspaper The Independent writes, "This latest posthumous repackage involves replacing or augmenting the original arrangements of 14 Elvis performances with new orchestrations, mostly to the songs’ detriment: both the snake-hipped sway of “It’s Now Or Never” and the yearning tone of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” are ill-served by the lush strings."
The Irish Times gives it 3 out of 5 - "Recalling The Beatles’ LOVE album, it’s listenable and occasionally pleasant – but you just can’t beat the originals."
It is still early days though and the first weekend for its release so fingers crossed...

Priscilla reveals her final conversation with Elvis: Priscilla, on the 'If I Can Dream' publicity trail, was on the BBC's Jonathan Ross Show this week. In the programme Priscilla opened up about her final conversation with Elvis, days before his untimely death, when he reassured her he was fine. Elvis died of a heart attack at his home on August 16 1977, hours before he was due to fly out of Memphis to start a new tour, which Priscilla revealed the 42-year-old had been excited about.
His former wife told The Jonathan Ross Show: “We talked, in fact we talked a few days before he passed which was very hard. I was asking if he was OK and if he was excited about going on tour and he was. He loved work, but he was dealing with a lot of issues, decisions that he had to make, so it wasn’t easy.”
Asked if she had concerns for him, she replied: “I did but Elvis was, he felt he was OK. But I knew that Elvis was dealing with a lot of issues shortly before his death.
“He wasn’t someone who you could just say, ‘You need to really take care of yourself...’ It was hard for anyone to do anything because ultimately it was his decision and he felt he was fine.”
The pair met in 1959 when Priscilla was only 14 years old and Elvis was 24 and wed nearly eight years later. The couple divorced four years before Elvis’ death, but she revealed that |
|
hearing about his death was “absolutely devastating. I mean still to this day it’s hard to believe”.
Priscilla admitted that she felt defined by her husband’s fame during their marriage. “I was kind of lost really in who I was earlier in my life, I really didn’t have teenage years. I learnt so much about him and was with him so much that I thought the way he did.
“I knew what he liked, what he didn’t like, I knew his thoughts, I knew everything as far as you could possibly do when you live together at such a young age.
The 70-year-old also told of how Elvis was so determined to avoid other people’s germs that he insisted on taking his own cutlery to other people’s houses and would only drink from where the handle met a cup as he believed no other mouths or fingers would have touched that spot. But he was so determined to write songs and make music, that if he was still alive today he would still be making music.
Talking about Presley’s dislike of germs, she said: ‘Elvis never |
|
liked to go to people’s homes to eat because didn’t like eating with other people’s silverware, so he would take his own silverware.
And he didn’t like drinking out of cups that other people had drunk out of, even restaurants or other people’s homes. ‘So when he drank, he would drink where the handle was, knowing that no one would ever drink at that side.’
When asked by Ross: 'So was he sort of germophobic then?’, she responded: ‘Yes he was a bit, he just didn’t like being around other things that people handled a lot.
‘He was that way when he was young, very young, a young boy.
“I’m much more comfortable with it now because I am my own person in my own right now so I’m able to share that,” she said.
Priscilla was joined on the show by Elvis Costello who performed a few lines from 'Suspicious Minds' after his own chart hit ‘Alison’ - played on Presley’s personal guitar from 1956 and spoke to Ross about his memories of the Jailhouse Rock singer.

'Ciscoking's Corner' ELVIS website Closed Down: Some EIN members have asked us why Joachim Bernecker aka Ciscoking's informative website 'Ciscokings Corner' has closed down. EIN tracked down the Elvis super-fan responsible..
EIN - You have announced that your incredibly
|
|
detailed Elvis releases 'Ciscokings Corner' website has had to close down. It is such a shame as I personally loved all the rare recording details. Can I ask you why, is this because of personal attacks?
Cisco - Yes. I have been attacked more than once the recent few months. It's just a shame because it is exactly the same people who steal / copy my information from my (now deleted) site without ever having given me credit that are the same people who want to bash my independent opinions. In some ways I think my help in proving that Elvis never recorded "Tiger Man" at SUN studios was a key factor.
EIN - Do you blame other people's egos and jealousy for this?
Cisco - This might be two of the reasons. Others are that I am no "follower" and have a strong opinion of my own. However, I prefer fair discussion and respect for other opinions.
I won't name and shame anybody. But everyone can judge by himself when he looks at certain discussions in the internet. It is no rocket science. On a place like the previously very fine FECC message-board, fair discussion isn't possible any more when it comes to the later Presley concerts.
You immediately get attacked when you praise a show from Presley's stage work after 1970. You cannot just say any more that a show from |
|
this time is "great" or "fantastic" without being ridiculed, bashed and being asked "compared to what and when" and "why". In the end you are ridiculed as a fan with "rose- colored glasses" who supports a "drug addicted zombie" without will who is only able to do his "dive bomb routine". I call this disrespect for the artist. Why can't Elvis fans be allowed to state their enjoyment of concerts after 1970 without having to forever justify their opinions? When it is the same people who belittle you as "steal" your hard-earned work, this made me feel no motivation to keep my site online - as you surely understand.
EIN - Fans don't realise what time and energy it takes to keep an Elvis site updated. How many years have you been gathering release information, and how many hours a week do you put into the site?
Cisco - In the beginning I spent ages on the website. Literally every minute of my spare time. I was sitting sometimes 12 hours a day on the PC getting red eyes. Keep the site up to date is another challenge. I didn't miss a release for years. I was gathering infos from people all
|
|
over the world ..experts... producers... collectors... fans.... eye-witnesses who were there etc.... well I still do but now the info will only flow in a very limited circle of fans... I have a bunch of new infos right here on my table... many amended show dates.... even a SB got a newly confirmed date...... all gathered from very reliable sources. Information you won't ever find anywhere else on the internet. In recent times I still spent around an hour per day on the site.
I also note that on the site I provided for free over 250 complete rare Elvis concerts for listening via streaming.
EIN - Do you make money from your website?
Cisco - Not a penny.
EIN - What about your other site 'Elvis On CD' - will this keep running?
Cisco - Yep....I am still responsible for the concert import cds... there. But no more rare cdr listings though.
And I am very proud that I am still Ernst Jorgensen's consultant when it comes to concert releases by FTD.
Go here to FECC if you want to know more about why 'Ciscoking Corner' has closed down.

Joanna Lumley on finding Elvis in Memphis: In the new ITV UK documentary, the actress and lifelong devotee goes on a pilgrimage to the King's Mississippi birthplace and Graceland
Joanna Lumley believes you either get Elvis or you don’t. She still remembers the day that she got him.
“I was 10 and staying with my aunt in Kent when Blue Suede Shoes came out," she recalls reverently. "We played it on a gramophone and I became besotted!
"I’d never heard anything like that and what a magic voice he had. Back then I hadn’t seen a film of Elvis in action because I didn’t have a television. But I remember seeing a photograph with his slick of hair and just falling in love.”
In her latest travelogue for UK television ITV, Lumley finally goes on a pilgrimage – "as if he were a saint" – to Memphis, the Tennessee city where teenage Elvis laid down his first tracks. |
|
But unlike the many millions of fans who have gone before, Lumley had Priscilla Presley as her tour guide of the world's most famous rock' n' roll residence, Graceland.
So what did she make of Elvis’s ex-wife? “I just loved her – the lucky lady who'd married Elvis. Think of Linda McCartney and multiply it by a million.
"I was so curious about what she’d be like and she seemed like a porcelain doll: so beautiful and radiant, with her black hair and lovely dress. What focus there was on her must have been intense. [She was] the envy of others, then it all went wrong."
The King would have turned 80 this year had he lived. Lumley's tribute is clearly a labour of love, focusing on Elvis' impoverished childhood and meteoric rise to fame rather than his famously troubled latter years.
She recalls learning of Elvis' death in August 1977, aged just 42, as vividly as that gramophone rendition of Blue Suede Shoes. By that time, she was a successful actress shooting The Avengers in Canada.
“The Canadian press were awful, basically wondering what the fuss was about, seeing it just as a ‘fat singer’ that had died. Where as I and the rest of the world were truly devastated. The Canadians didn’t understand. There was very little respect for Elvis back then and that appalled me – how could he be dissed when he died? But millions of us did respect him and it was heartbreaking – the King was dead and it was awful.”
He lives on thanks to Lumley's comic alter ego in Absolutely Fabulous: hard-drinking hedonist Patsy.
“Patsy – like me – adores Elvis! He’s always been her man. I observed that Elvis never gave a big smiley grin, just a small one with raised lip on the side, so that’s what I gave Patsy because it was just so cool. Plus, she lowers her voice like Elvis when she’s happy, too. I love it. He had a passion for Palomino horses, with a golden mane… just like Patsy!”
Lumley's favourite place? Sun Studio, where Elvis made his first record, That’s All Right, Mama in 1954. "The thought of him politely going in there and putting down his $4 and saying to the woman at the desk that he didn’t sound like anyone else... And he was right!"
'Joanna Lumley: Elvis and Me' airs in the UK on Wednesday 4th November, ITV at 9pm

'Solid As Rock' New Import CD: Straight Arrow is very pleased to bring you, as a first for the label, two concerts from 1971, the Las Vegas August 27th, 1971 dinner & midnight shows. And what a delight it is to get fresh tapes from this year, and from this season, and in rather decent sound too - a rarity for early Vegas seasons. The August 27th, 1971 Dinner and Midnight Shows are taken directly from an original Audience Recorded master tape. The Aug. 27, 1971 D/S is a completely new show, even for die-hard Elvis fans. It has never been in circulation - in any form!
The Aug 27, 1971 M/S was previously released from an awful sounding source.
Elvis' previous engagement there had shown clear signs of his high performing standard slipping, but here it sounds like he's back on track again. Both shows are tight, no-nonsense affairs with Presley in good voice and in strong form. He performs with focus and professionalism, and he sings a fantastic variety of music. It's interesting to note that already in '71, the difference between the dinner and midnight shows was becoming noticeable, the midnight show is truly sensational! This release is presented in a de-luxe double digipack, collection of photos taken in Del Webbs Sahara Tahoe hotel and at the Las Vegas.

2015 - Elvis Presley #2 Forbes Top-Earning Dead Celebrity: This year Michael Jackson again leads the list of the 13 top-earning dead
celebrities, pulling in $115 million over the past year - however this marks an 18% drop from last year. The main
drivers of his afterlife fortune: the Vegas Cirque du Soleil show
Michael Jackson One, recorded music sales and
half of the Sony /ATV publishing empire.
Once again Elvis Presley is holding steady at $55 million. The King of Rock n’ Roll doesn’t rule the realm of postmortem cash, but he’s making more than most living stars thanks largely to Graceland ticket sales. In August he earned his 53rd Top 40 album with Elvis Presley Forever, a compilation released by the U.S. Postal Service along with a commemorative stamp.
Peanuts creator Charles Schulz ranks third with $40 million, much of it from his cut of licensing revenue from the popular comic.
Bob Marley ($21 million) and Elizabeth Taylor ($20 million) round out the top five. In death, Marley is becoming quite the businessman with his Marley Beverage company (home to Marley’s Mellow Mood) and House of Marley (maker of eco-friendly audio and lifestyle products).
Other notables include actor Paul Walker, who banked $10.5 million on the success of Furious 7–which grossed $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office, making it the franchise’s biggest intake to date. Albert Einstein earned $11 million, thanks to branded merchandise including apparel, posters and tablets designed by Israeli tech company Fourier Systems.
|
|
Though there are only 13 names on our Top-Earning Dead Celebrities list, plenty of others are pulling in millions from beyond the grave. Among those closest to making the cut: Frank Sinatra, Bruce Lee, Joan Rivers, George Harrison, Richard Rodgers, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash and Kurt Cobain.
Top five Forbes magazine Top-Earning Dead Celebrities 2015.
1. Michael Jackson $115 million
2. Elvis Presley $55 million
3. Charles Schulz ('Peanuts' creator) $40 million. 4. Bob Marley $21 million.
5. Elizabeth Taylor $20 million.
As Gore Vidal once noted, "Death is a good career move"!

UPDATED - 'If I Can Dream' new Elvis album - EIN Readers Respond: The publicity for the "new" Elvis album is ramping up, which is good to see. Yesterday EIN asked its readers what were their opinions so far about the new album to be released at the end of this week.
Of all the sneak previews EIN suggested that the new version of "Burning Love" sounded GHASTLY!
Nor can we possibly believe that these songs with new overdubs are, "What Elvis would have loved to have had" as Priscilla tells everyone on her publicity trail.
EIN reader's comments are a very mixed bunch such as..
... I've listened to every track that's available from this CD, and I hate them all! They've ruined Elvis' songs. Why can't they leave his music alone? The original tracks are perfect, just the way they are!
....The new arrangements are terrific and exciting as well as creative - especially Burning Love!!
... I’ve really liked most of what I’ve heard so far but must agree that 'Burning Love' is a bit odd… it doesn’t offend but it won’t be the track I use to sell the concept to family and friends."
|
|
... They have absolutely destroyed "Burning Love". This was about as stupid as painting a mustache on the "Mona Lisa".
To be honest while EIN is not so sure of the concept of putting an orchestra over already orchestrated versions and putting violins over great rock'n'roll numbers like 'Burning Love' but we are keeping an open mind until we hear the whole album on a quality HiFi.
We also hope the album is a big success but maybe we are the wrong target-market since we know the originals so very well. Today we add lots more reader feedback - including a very detailed look from EIN contributor Bryan Gruszka.

'A Touch Of Gold Lamé' Book Review: The new book from the Elvis Files Erik Lorentzen is an in-depth look at Elvis' fabulous tours of 1957 over 420 pages.
EIN has never seen so many glorious photographs of Elvis on tour in 1957 with so many photographs we have previously not seen in such stunning quality and as glorious full-page images.
The wealth of material in this book is stunning. His single day Ottawa appearance with the first fabulous article “The Pelvis Arrives” and continue over forty-two pages of articles and stunning images. There are 10 articles alone from Ottawa’s various newspapers and two interviews with Elvis. And yet he was there for only one day!
.. "Glittering in an unborn calf skin suit, which was completely covered with 24-karat gold cloth, and 24-karat gold shoes, Elvis seemed to be somewhat groggy as he greeted the record crowd. Assuming his provocative stance, he tilted the microphone, embraced it and began rotating his pelvis....
It is incredible, only twenty-eight Elvis concerts over 400 plus pages and not a jumpsuit in sight!
Go here as EIN's Piers Beagley checks out this sensational new book about the crucial tours of 1957 that would help cement Elvis' incredible legacy as he headed towards his possible career-changing term in the US Army....

Rare Elvis recording to fetch around £12,000: The UK media is writing about "An incredibly rare Elvis Presley recording that even fans didn’t know existed has surfaced in North England".
And the acetate, made for Tennessee radio station WHBQ, is set to spark a bidding war when it goes under the hammer in Dudley on November 4.
Fans are well and truly shook up by the discovery.
Aston’s Auctioneers estimate the 78rpm record will fetch around £12,000, but admit the slice of vinyl could go for much, much more.
It is highly collectible for two reasons:
* The A-side is a recording of Elvis singing 'Suspicion' – at least three years before The King released it as a single (in 1965).
* The B-side is evidence of a long-lost civil rights milestone. It is a promotional jingle for Ray Charles’ August 20, 1961, concert at Ellis Auditorium – the very first mixed race gig in Memphis.
Film poster specialist Steve Kennedy, who is involved in the auction, says: “It is a piece of history, a total one-off. On the B-side you have the social history, the first time the ‘coloureds only’ signs were taken off the auditorium washrooms.
Elvis loved the song Suspicion, but RCA was reluctant to release it as a single because they wanted it for Terry Stafford.”
|
|
EIN Notes that this is surely just an acetate of the Pot Luck album track - and nothing more.
Also RCA did not want Terry Stafford to release it as suggested - he just copied Elvis' version for the 'Crusader' label, as RCA thought Elvis' other singles 'Good Luck Charm', 'She's Not You' were stronger material.
Stafford’s version hit the Billboard Top Ten in 1964, and Elvis’ version followed soon afterwards, the two jockeying for position in the charts.
There’s a fascinating story attached to the record.
It belonged to Julie Wall, a North Kesteven Council employee who rifled more than half a million in loose change from car park cash boxes – and spent the lot on Elvis memorabilia.
She was jailed for three years in 2005 and the bizarre case spawned a TV film, Caught In A Trap, starring Connie Fisher as the Lincolnshire Elvis fanatic.
The sale will also feature rare RCA Living stereo sampler records, promotional records and sought-after posters for such films as Love Me Tender, Blue Hawaii, California Holiday, Girl Happy and Follow That Dream.

Priscilla On the NBC 'Today Show' promoting 'If I Can Dream': Priscilla - noted as Executive Producer of the new album - has been hitting the promotion trail hard to get out maximum publicity about the new album.
And EIN sure hopes it gets the album high in the charts and onto your local music stations so that a new generation of the "general Public' can get hooked and go on to discover the REAL music of Elvis.
Elvis Presley gets orchestral accompaniment on album 'If I Can Dream' as

Elvis Presley & The RPO "Burning Love": With less than a week to go before the release of 'If I Can Dream', the new album of Elvis songs re-recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, fans now have a chance to listen to the new version of "Burning Love".
To be honest, to these EIN ears it sound GHASTLY! Who would put out-dated twirly violins all over such a good rock'n'roll song! The arrangement is corny to say the least.
Accompanying Presley’s original vocal track are the same guitar riff and drum beat, along with a bed of strings surrounding the track. They fill the "empty space" present in the 1972 single with a lush arrangement that swells as Presley goes into the chorus.
The album features 14 tracks from the King’s catalog re-recorded at Abbey Road Studios, including "Love Me Tender," "In The Ghetto," "Can’t Help Falling In Love" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Additionally Michael Bublé’s is included on this version of "Fever," making the song a duet.

Elvis' Audubon home now a performance venue: "We go in through the kitchen because that’s how he used to do it," John Bass says as he swings open a screen door and steps into 1034 Audubon Dr. in Memphis. It’s the first home Elvis Presley bought, at age 21, with royalties earned from Heartbreak Hotel, and he lived there with his parents for 13 months, before moving to Graceland.
"It feels like 1956 when you walk in," says Bass, program manager, "He went from being an interesting, regional musician to becoming Elvis while living here."
The house is musty and wood paneling lines most of the walls, save for those covered in busy wallpaper: Hummingbirds hovering above plants; music notes circling guitars and drums. Framed photos of the Presleys are seen at every turn. One room has a baby-blue couch and bright, red shag carpet.
House setup Bass knows the house well. In 2006, Mike and |
|
Linda Curb of Curb Records purchased and restored it, and the Curb Institute eventually repurposed the space for a student-led concert Web series. Evening at Elvis’ kicked off in November 2013 with Memphis’ locals Star & Micey playing in the wide, open den Presley himself built onto the house.
Acoustic tiles, the same used at Sun Studio, soundproof and cushion the space for a warm sound. The room seats about 75 people, and the event, which takes place a few times a year, is invitation only. Six musicians, including Bill Frisell, Roseanne Cash and Bobby Rush, have played there.
"Once the music starts, everybody is captivated by it. I hesitate to call it a magical experience, but it almost is, and it just feels so right every time."
But Bass’ mission digs deeper. He wants to both bring in artists who connect meaningfully with Memphis’ musical reach, and to expose his students to the artists still around to tell their stories and pass down the torch. |
|
Guest artists are invited to the house to perform and discuss their careers, especially in the context of Memphis and our region. The format is a mixture of performance and interview, which takes place in front of an intimate audience of 75-100 people.
As for Elvis, says Bass, "He was just a young guy trying to do cool stuff and buck the system. We’re trying to use the house in the same way."

Film crew shooting movie at Elvis birthplace: Between train whistles and rumbling trucks, a 12-year-old boy got a lesson in all things Elvis this week.
The kid was Ben, and he’s not going to keep what he learned to himself. He’s a fictional character in a short movie, "Live the Dream: Choices and Consequences," and filming will continue at the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum this week.
"When it’s finished, we’ll show it to sixth-graders when they visit," said Dick Guyton, chairman of the Elvis Presley Memorial Foundation. "This is the second movie of two."
The first movie, "Dream the Dream," was filmed in 2013, and it was geared toward third-grade students who visited the Birthplace.
As with the first film, this one uses Elvis’ story as a way to teach young people about life’s possibilities.
"We don’t want it to be too preachy," said Glen Allison, the writer and producer, "but we wanted to look at choices, not just the negative aspects but the positives. You have the chance to make good choices."
|
|
Filming started at the overlook, near a statue of Elvis as a young boy sitting in front of another statue of a triumphant, world-famous Elvis.
"Everyone is human, even superstars," said Allison, owner of AllisonDigital. "He made good and bad choices, just like everybody."
In "Live the Dream," Ben is at a crossroads, and Leo is there to point him in the right direction.
"Leo is an angel, basically," said Darius Wallace, who plays the character. "I imagine him to be the spirit of the grounds."
According to the script, special effects will make it look as though Ben and Leo are flying. An animation sequence is also planned.
"That’s what’s so great about being the writer," Allison said. "You dream it up and somebody else has to make it happen."
The finished film should be ready by spring.

Vale - Val(erie) Williams RIP: It is with great sadness and many fond memories that EIN announces the passing of Val Williams. Val's name will not be familiar to many of our readers, but if it wasn't for Val Williams, EIN would likely never have come into existence.
In early 1986 Val formed and was the driving force of what was originally known as the Elvis Presley Appreciation Society of the A.C.T. When Val left Canberra and moved to Sydney, EPAS, as it was generally referred to, remained active in the Canberra area and eventually became the Elvis Information Network (EIN) in the mid 1990s. As EIN, it moved from a being a local fan club to having an international presence as part of the Internet.
Val passed away on 18 September. She was 89. Val will be missed and always remembered. Val, thank you and may you rest in peace.

Joanna Lumley Elvis and Me: “My Elvis was this young one, before the jumpsuits and the big lifestyle. But what was he really like? If my dream had come true and he had come over to England and I had met him, I wonder would I have liked the boy buried underneath the myth? I’m going in search of the youth catapulted to fame and fortune"
Joanna Lumley (of TV series 'Absolutely Fabulous' fame) embarks on a very personal journey for an intimate insight into Elvis Presley, the man behind the myth, for this unique one-hour documentary. The programme sees Joanna travel to Graceland and meet some of Elvis’s closest surviving friends and family, including ex-wife Priscilla, for an honest portrait of what ‘The King’ was really like.
One of the first records Joanna ever bought was “Hound Dog” and ever since that day she has loved Elvis. This year Elvis would have turned 80 and it is one of Joanna’s biggest regrets that she never got the opportunity to meet the man.
|
|
Joanna says: “The thing about being a fan of Elvis is that you just love everything about him. I loved the way he looked, the way he sang, the way he dressed, the photographs of him, the way he performed on stage…and I loved his smile and his sense of humour. I love the fact that he never really grinned huge cheesy grins, he had a special Elvis grin, and I borrowed that for Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous…a little tribute to Elvis.”
Joanna joins Priscilla Presley at Abbey Road Studios for a recording session of the new Elvis album “If I Can Dream” with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. As they listen to musicians from the live orchestra recording together, the atmosphere is emotional.
Joanna accepts Priscilla’s invitation to Graceland for a personal tour of Elvis’ home.
Joanna says: “The TV room, the living room, Elvis’s jungle-themed den, are virtually untouched. His mother’s bedroom is still as it was. It’s open to the public, but tonight, Priscilla and I will be alone, with her memories.”
Elvis had just turned 22 and was the biggest sensation in music when he bought the house. But his story began in Tupelo, Mississippi, where he was born. Joanna heads there next, to see his humble beginnings for herself and visit the shack which Elvis’s father built for the family.
Joanna reveals how his parents, who couldn’t read or write, were regarded at the bottom of the social ladder in the 1930s.
|
|
She explains: “Dirt poor was a term coined in America in the 1930s and it meant people who were so poor that they had a roof over their heads but the ground they were on was just earth. This little shack, that Vernon, Elvis’s dad built when he was just a teenager, in fact had planks on the ground but there was pretty much nothing inside it, just a few sticks of furniture. They were dirt poor. It’s extraordinary to think that this was where he was born.”
Joanna visits the hardware shop where an eleven-year-old Elvis bought a child-sized guitar when his protective mother, Gladys, banned him from buying the 22-calibre rifle that he had wanted.
Joanna talks to Elvis’s childhood friend Sam Bell, who reveals what life was like for a young Elvis growing up in a city blighted by segregation. She learns that Gospel was a major influence on Elvis, which would later shine through his music with the birth of rock n roll.
Sam says: “He wasn’t treated as a white boy in the neighbourhood, he was treated as one of the kids in the neighbourhood. He was very polite to my grandparents. We better say, ‘yes ma’am, yes sir,’ but him being white, he didn’t have to. But he did it anyway. Grandma loved him, and my papa did too, because no white kid ever said, ‘yes sir’.”
One of the highlights of Joanna’s journey is the iconic Sun Studios where Elvis recorded his first record in August 1953. Sun Studios remains exactly as it was the moment Elvis walked in. Overwhelmed, Joanna performs at the microphone whilst listening to Elvis’s breakthrough record from 1954.
Joanna also meets The King’s first love, Dixie Locke, who gives a fascinating insight into how Elvis was regarded as an outsider in his youth and bullied for the way he looked.
Dixie says: “My girlfriends had thought that maybe I was a little strange because I was dating him, when he was a little strange, that’s what people thought.”
Joanna visits the clothing store where Elvis created his look in the 1950s, including his infamous blue suede shoes, and follows his meteoric rise to fame. By the 1960s Elvis was earning the equivalent of 40 million dollars a year, largely thanks to his manager Colonel Tom Parker, whose influence was at times questioned by others.
Just after he found fame and brought Graceland, Elvis went into the army and off to Germany, where he found Priscilla. At that key moment, he lost his beloved mother.
School friend George Klein says: “I’ve never seen a grown man cry so much. He cried for three straight days. Elvis would get her gown or her blouse or something and he’d just hold it all day long. I saw that with my own eyes.”
Joanna talks to Elvis’s family and lifelong friends about his death, hearing about how the singer James Brown broke down at Elvis’s casket. She is moved to hear about his funeral and inspired by the legacy he has left behind.
The doco will be shown on ITV in the UK on Wed 4 Nov 2015 at 9pm..

How Elvis, Frank Sinatra and Tom Jones almost opened a Las Vegas hotel: Tom Jones almost opened a hotel with Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra.
The Welshman has revealed Sinatra approached him about launching a major new venue, called Tiger Bay, in Sin City.
Jones tells, "Frank Sinatra asked me if I would be interested in building a hotel with him in Las Vegas. He said to me, 'Let's do it and then we can control them rather than them controlling us'."
"It came pretty close. Frank and myself and Elvis Presley and some other people who were big names at the time we're going to do it. We almost got to it but it never occurred. We could have called it Tiger Bay, that would have been good." |
|
"Elvis' karate name was Tiger. I've been known as El Tigre - that's my Spanish name - so I was known as The Tiger when I started out.
EIN thinks this is BS! Was this a drunken night's discussion or a genuine proposition? Sinatra already perfomed at The Sands’ Copa Room which he co-owned with crime bosses Meyer Lansky and Frank Costello. Exactly why would Sinatra need another venue?
EIN notes that Tom Jones has been known to say almost anything in regard to his relationship with Elvis purely to generate publicity.
For a performer with a stunning voice and longevity one wonders why he still keeps on & on with his Elvis fantasy stories.

Early photo of Elvis in Memphis: In January 2014, Vanity Fair magazine published an article showing a photo of Elvis Presley that was presumed taken in downtown Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1947.
The article traces the origin of the photo to a woman who was walking into a drugstore to drop off some film that had one exposure left on the roll. According to the story, she noticed a young Elvis on his bike and asked him to pose, snapping her last frame of him. The woman later gave the photo to Presley family friend Janelle McComb of Tupelo, who passed along the photo and the story of how she obtained it to Elvis fan and memorabilia collector Wade Jones shortly before her death.
The story behind the photo may have been correct, but the city was wrong.
EPE have done some more research and tracked down the full story..
The 1950 Memphis City directory shows the S&S Drug Store, Lando Marossi restaurant and Milo’s liquor store that appear in the Vanity Fair photo. John Sampietro, whose father operated the S&S Drug Store at the corner of Poplar and High Street, remembered his father talking about how a young Elvis would come into the store to play pinball.
Milo Solomito operated the liquor store just across the street from the drug store and his son, Milo Jr., identified the store in the photo as the one his father ran for many years. To the right of the liquor store was the Marossi restaurant, which was also located across the street from the drug store before moving to a nearby location in 1954, according to Jerry Marossi.

So this was in fact Elvis’ neighborhood for almost a year before moving to Lauderdale Courts in the fall of 1949. -
Although not taken in Tupelo, the photo is one of the earliest photos of Elvis in Memphis, a city he would call home for the rest of his life.

'Bright Lights, Big City' New Import: Coming out soon is the new Straight Arrow CD titled 'Bright Lights, Big City', featuring the Las Vegas, February 20th, 1973 Dinner show. This Audience recording is taken directly from an original Rex Martin "booth recorded“ mastertape. When Straight Arrow started releasing the Rex Martin tapes a few years ago, they caused quite a sensation in the Elvis world. For years they were known to exist, but here they finally were, in a quality that's rare for off-line recorded tapes. In fact, these tapes are so good sonically, that they can easily match anything that's out there. They are certainly as good as the Rick Rennie tapes and bring us the true joy of Elvis Presley on stage in a way that many sterile / unbalanced soundboards were never able to do.
The Feb. 20th, 1973 D/S (from the 'booth tapes“ Vol. 7) is another completely new concert recording, even for die-hard Elvis fans - and the sound quality is exceptionally good!
In a standard deluxe digipack. Since there is a hand written note "Blue Suit / Silver Stars”, the producers assume that Elvis appeared in the 'Owl suit“ - the only blue jumpsuit designed with silver stars.

Hear Elvis' Dramatic, Newly Orchestrated 'American Trilogy': The soon to be released compilation of Elvis songs, newly set to orchestra, includes a powerful new interpretation of "An American Trilogy," which also features Duane Eddy on guitar. Beginning with shimmering strings, the tune slowly unfolds to become a particularly dramatic offering on 'If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley With the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra', due out Oct 30, with the rockabilly guitarist playing some tasteful, fluttering low-end textures.
Priscilla, who manages his estate said in a recent interview told how she found the song and brought it to her husband. "I was driving down Sunset Boulevard, and I heard Mickey Newbury singing it, and I went 'Oh, my God' and made a U-turn and went back to the house," she said. "No one usually ever brought songs to him. Elvis picked out all of his songs, with the exception of movie songs which matched the scenes. No one ever said, 'Hey, El, you got to do this song.'
"So I said, 'There's a song I think you really should listen to,'" she continued. "And he said, 'Well, put it on.' So I did, and he just sat there at the desk. He put his head down and kind of nodded to it. |
|
He closed his eyes and said, 'Damn, damn good song.' And the next thing I know, we're back in Vegas, and he ate it up and spit it out."
The orchestral record spans the singer's career and, in addition to the work of the orchestra and Eddy, features contributions from Michael Bublé, who sings half of "Fever" as a duet, and opera-pop trio Il Volo, who add texture to "It's Now or Never."
"This is the album I think he always would have wanted to do," Priscilla said. "The label would have never allowed him to have an orchestra. And if it was up to Col Parker, he would have had Elvis just singing — no background, no nothing. I think we have given him the freedom here to experiment with all the orchestras he would have loved in the pieces."
Can it really be better than the stunning original - You Decide!

Angela Lansbury 90th Birthday Today: People like to pass landmark birthdays in meaningful places, so it seems right that Dame Angela Lansbury should be celebrating her 90th on American television and on Broadway, where she will receive the Oscar Hammerstein Award for lifetime achievement in musical theatre this weekend.
These honours acknowledge the London-born performer’s contribution to the small screen, where she played writer turned crime-fighter Jessica Fletcher in 'Murder, She Wrote' for 12 years and to the evolution of the American musical, winning five Tony awards for roles in Stephen Sondheim’s productions.
She has acknowledged in interviews that her only regret is that her movie CV has been spottier than her theatre and TV credits – although her films include the classic Elvis movie Blue Hawaii, the conspiracy thriller The Manchurian Candidate (1962) and Disney’s children’s hit, Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) which introduced her to a youthful audience which grew up to watch her in Murder, She Wrote.
Of her time with Elvis in the movie Blue Hawaii, Lansbury said,
“I was obviously awed being in Elvis's presence but he was an awfully nice young man. He was a very caring person - in those days he just come out the army, he was fit, he was slender, he was on top of his form. Elvis couldn't have been nicer to me. I'll never forget it - it was really wonderful. We sat around and chatted. My character was so funny supposedly not understanding her son and Elvis loved it he thought it was so funny.” |
|
Last year’s run of Blithe Spirit at the Gielgud theatre in London was a homecoming for Lansbury whose grandfather, George Lansbury, was leader of the Labour party in the 1930s. Even before she officially became a Dame in the 2014 new year’s honours list, Lansbury acknowledged the obligations of the role of the theatrical grande dame without the temperamental behaviour that accompanies it.

Elvis Rocked the Houston Coliseum 1956: Elvis' first performance in Houston was on January 1, 1955 at Eagles Hall and he performed there another ten times that year. But on October 13 1956, 21-year-old Elvis Presley was in Houston for his second time that year foregoing the smaller venues like the Cook's Hoedown Club, to play two shows at the 9,000-seat Sam Houston Coliseum.
Earlier that year in April, the up and coming star performed at the City Auditorium where he sat at the edge of the state after the show, and signed autographs. But, when he returned to Houston six months later, the idea of a civilized Elvis Presley concert seemed like a well, "Unchained Melody." "Heartbreak Hotel" was a hit and "Hound Dog," was climbing the charts. And his controversial appearances on the Steven Allen and Ed Sullivan shows had gained him the name, "Elvis the Pelvis," thanks largely to his outrageous hip gyrations.
After Elvis was brought onto the stage of the Sam Houston Coliseum for the 9 o'clock show under police guard, he began singing "Heartbreak Hotel." But, only the first words were heard since the screams and cries from the crowd, comprised mostly teenage girls, completely drowned out the performance for almost five minutes.
A local review noted, "When Presley appeared on the stage a deafening roar went up the lasted a full 3 minutes.
|
|
One 14-year-old blonde girl who was sitting a scant few feet from the stage almost fainted when Presley asked the crowd “Do You Love Me?” She jumped up grasped at her neck and fell to the floor apparently unconscious. A friend helped up and said, “Isn’t it wonderful”. Presley made the most of his short stay on stage and never let up from the second he started until he left.
Kay Wheeler, fan club president, called Presley “The hottest piece of property in America” and she thinks the “unfair” publicity has made the kids are afraid to think their own minds."
It took fifty police officers, emergency corpsmen, and firemen to keep the frenetic crowd from rushing the stage. After singing just a few songs, a long-ponytailed girl broke through the barricade prompting other equally hysterical fans to do the same. Talk about the "Devil in Disguise..." Before the 'Hunk of Burning Love' could be trampled, he was promptly taken away by a waiting police escort car.
As they say, "Elvis has left the building" and no one can replace him. -

Tony Joe White Reminisces On a Career Inspired By Lightnin' Hopkins: “That was one of the freakiest days I’ve ever spent on the road,” laughs White, the swamp-rocker whose signature 1969 hit “Polk Salad Annie” became a linchpin of Elvis Presley’s live sets. White also wrote hits for Brook Benton and Tina Turner, among others, and is one of the most nonplussed individuals in the music industry.
“You know, man, for all the people I’ve gotten to meet and hang out with, from Elvis to Willie to people like Tina Turner, Mark Knopfler, and others who’ve cut my songs, what I really dig is living out here in this little town and just sitting on the back porch and watching the fall weather come on,” he says.
White lives these days about 50 miles outside Nashville “at a wide place in the road where everybody knows everybody else and no one much cares about all the music business hoopla," he says. "We’re all just folks around here.”
While White, who says he knew by the time he was 15 he was going to be a musician, is happy to talk about artists and celebrities he’s intersected with, he wants to make clear the effect Houstonian Lightnin’ Hopkins had on his career.
“I grew up on a cotton farm in North Louisiana with a brother, five sisters, my mother and father, and we could all play guitar |
|
and piano, so I was around music all the time, there was music every day. But one day my brother had been off somewhere and he came home with an album by Lightnin’ Hopkins and it just set me on fire. I thought it was the coolest thing I’d ever heard, and that was about the time I started takin’ my daddy’s ol’ guitar up to my room to practice late at night."
White’s first success came via “Polk Salad Annie,” which he cut for Fred Foster’s Monument Records label. White regrets never having met labelmate Roy Orbison.
“It just never happened that we were together,” says White. “Roy was such a one-of-a-kind talent. That thing he had, he could do soul, rock and roll, country, ballads, rockers, he just had almost no limits as far as talent goes. I really wish we had met.”
Now 72, White says his health is good and he’s looking forward to his coming tour.
“We’re doing New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Lafayette, so there’ll be lots of kinfolks. And I’m really looking forward to getting back to Houston because it’s been a while and it has always been good to me.”

Selling "Tupelo Elvis" to England: Tupelo tourism officials will spend a week in England next month selling the city and the Elvis Presley Birthplace as destinations.
Tupelo Convention and Visitor Bureau director Neal McCoy said Tupelo was invited to take part in "Elvis at the 02," which is billed as the largest Elvis exhibition ever in Europe.
"It was only supposed to be a nine-month show, ending in August," McCoy said. "But it has been so successful, they extended it three months. Some of the things in the show have never left Graceland before.
"Graceland has invited us to come over to London to help sell Tupelo and the birthplace. This is a prime opportunity for us to go over and strike while the iron is hot."
McCoy, the bureau's international sales director, Jennie Curlee, and Mayor Jason Shelton will fly to London for a few days.
"This has been in the works for the last three months, but we didn't get the final OK from Graceland until last Thursday," McCoy said. "We will host a reception that Tuesday for tour and travel operators.
"Then on Wednesday and Thursday, we will go out on sales calls and sit down with the front line staff of travel agencies. We will tell them how to sell the Elvis experience to include Tupelo."
McCoy said the opportunity was too good to pass up.
"We have the money in our budget and essentially, the only costs are the hotel and the airline tickets. I am estimating it will cost about $4,000 a person."

'Atlanta, Second Stop' New Import: The MxF label will release soon a new Audience Recorded volume dedicated to Elvis’ 1973 June Tour. This cd is entitled Atlanta, Second Stop, featuring the Omni Coliseum June 29, 1973 8.30 PM Show.
The June Tour represent the second and last tour of the year. In the Omni coliseum Elvis performed five shows in the single the tour. The show here presented is the second one… The begin of the 1973 presents an Elvis still at the top, no more a rocking singer. He is full of enthusiasm he sings with power delivering a solid and long show, with the classic repertoire of the 1973 including a incredible “Steaming rolling blues” version, together the really dramatic What Now My Love and the classic Bridge Over Troubled Water. In this specific solid show….. Elvis replaced the classic Bridge Over Troubled Water with the gospel How Great Thou Art and added two nice variation the sensitive Help Me Make It through The Night and the Beatles’ song Something… for the rest is the classic songs line up of the tour.. the atmosphere enormous, the demand terrific, 17.143 people attended at the show. |
|
The Audience recorded show is unreleased and complete, (EIN Notes that like most "unreleased" bootlegs of late, this has been out previously on poor quality CDR), here we present the show directly from a first generation copy of a privately-recorded 60-minute cassette. The sound is very good really impressive without doubt one of the best audience recording coming from the specific June tour. We are very proud to give you the opportunity listening with pleasure this solid show. Considering it was taped from the audience in a big hall the audio is incredibly good..
This new release will be presented in a beautiful four panels digipack with a collection of photos taken during show.. All the photos come from the Steve Rino & Bob Rush book, Elvis June 1973 tour.
EIN's good friend and concert specialist CiscoKing notes that "It is most likely a straight copy of the cd-r floating around in collectors circles. This means it is likely to be a great Atlanta show with bad audience recorded sound." (please check sound samples before buying)

New Elvis album recorded at Beatles studio with royal orchestra, Michael Buble: The publicity for the "new" Elvis album is ramping up, which is good to see. The local Sydney newspaper recently featured the following
... A new album of Elvis songs has Britain's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra backing the soulful voice of the king of rock and roll and Priscilla Presley has endorsed the project which was recorded at London's Abbey Road Studios, where The Beatles made most of their hits.
Due out on October 30, the album, entitled If I Can Dream, gives Presley's songs the sort of huge backing he always wanted in studio recordings but only got during his 1970s Las Vegas concerts, Priscilla said.
"Elvis loved bigness," she told reporters and recounted how his manager Colonel Tom Parker would, on studio recordings, sneakily insist that the backing track volume be turned down and Presley's voice brought up front.
"When Elvis heard this was happening, he went ballistic. So this is what the songs would have sounded like. He wanted it dramatic, he wanted to feel it," the 70-year-old said.
"We've just added to it to make it the sound that Elvis truly |
|
would have loved to have had. Because if you ever saw him on the stage in Las Vegas, this is what you heard."
(EIN notes this is odd since they have obviously RAISED Elvis' voice track!).
The album mixes hits with lesser-known tracks deemed ripe for a string arrangement. The 14 songs span from the early 1950s to his death in 1977 aged 42.
(EIN notes, only one 1956 track is used 'Love Me Tender' while the latest is from 1973)
The project to give Elvis's recordings a full orchestral backing was a 15-month labour of love for Priscilla and producers Don Reedman and Nick Patrick.
The album includes It's "Now Or Never", "You've Lost That Loving Feeling", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Can't Help Falling In Love", "In The Ghetto", "How Great Thou Art" and "An American Trilogy".
Fever is reformulated as a duet with Canadian crooner Michael Buble, over a powerful new backdrop that swells like a James Bond movie theme.
Hours of painstaking work went into extracting Presley's voice from the original tapes, using modern technology to paint out the music that leaked from his loud headphones onto the vocal microphone.
Nonetheless, the producers kept the original backing track around for the orchestra so they could play along to the same sounds as Presley did.
In a reversal of the regular process, the orchestra worked around the singer's vocals, which Patrick compared to fitting "the most exquisite Savile Row suit around the most exquisite singer imaginable".
A vinyl version will be released on November 6, while a deluxe edition contains three extra tracks.

"Elvis: The Best Of British, The RCA Years 1959 – 1960" New FTD Book OUT NOW: The final UK book concluding the Trevor Simpson "Best Of British" trilogy. 'Elvis: The Best of British' this time focuses on the RCA recordings of 1959-1960 and, consistent with the previous volumes, contains over 500 pages. Discover exactly how Elvis, on his triumphant return from army service, reinvented his career at the top of the entertainment world when RCA declared ‘Elvis is Back!’ before the movie G.I. Blues changed his life forever. His story is graphically told through the music with over FIFTY iconic songs, originally released on the British RCA label, having been extensively researched. Over 1100 rare or previously unpublished photographs, charts and unique memorabilia. With its wealth of invaluable information, this book includes: -
- Every known photograph and press cutting of Elvis in Scotland, his only time on British soil!- Photographs from the pivotal meeting with Hal Wallis in a German restaurant where Elvis’ future movie career was mapped out!
This book includes a 30 track CD featuring many performances officially released for the first time (these are mainly "film" versions and radio adverts). Hear Elvis personally introduce his British chart toppers during this two year period.... |
|
EIN Notes that "Elvis personally introduces his British chart toppers" is in fact not unreleased studio banter but rather excerts from known interviews edited onto the start of the song - rather like the 1987 'Words & Music' release. -

Elvis' Honeymoon Hideaway Buy It Now for $7 Million!: Elvis Presley's Palm Springs honeymoon retreat is back on the market with its price slashed by over 25 percent. Last year, the honeymoon hideaway was listed for $9.5 million, a number which has now dropped to $6.93 million.
Elvis purchased the home in 1967 for $21,000 and spent his honeymoon with Priscilla Presley there.
"Their daughter, Lisa Marie Presley was born exactly nine months later, on February 1, 1968.
The 4,695 modernist home, designed by William Krisel, includes dining and living rooms, a bar, a breakfast bar, four bedrooms, along with five bathrooms. The property features a pool, a tennis court and a fruit orchard.
Featured in 'Elvis & Me' and 'Elvis by the Presleys,' the home measuring nearly 5,000 square feet is built in 'four perfect circles, on three levels,' according to its listing page. The home also includes a pool, tennis court and even a stage. |

Elvis and Priscilla Presley used the Palm Springs home as a honeymoon hideway after their May 1967 wedding Elvis and Priscilla spent their wedding night and honeymoon in Palm Springs after their Las Vegas wedding.
As the story goes, Presley and his wife-to-be had rented the house as a venue for their ceremony and reception, but gossip columnist Rona Barrett who lived nearby became suspicious.
When Barrett spilled the beans about the upcoming nuptials, Elvis and company decided to move their celebration to Las Vegas, with Frank Sinatra providing the transportation, including a fleet of limousines and his Lear jet, Christina. Price: $6,930,000 includes 4 Bedrooms and 5 full Bathrooms.

Woman Claiming To Be Elvis’ Real Daughter Warns Lisa Marie She’ll ‘Never Go Away’: In the unending whacky tabloid stories about Elvis, RadarOnline.com recently revealed that "a woman named Lisa Johansen is intent on taking over Lisa Marie‘s famed former home. Claiming she is Elvis‘ real daughter, she recently even dared to move in on the iconic Graceland estate!"
(EIN notes that her "Daring to move in" was actually Lisa Johansen only taking the general Graceland tour along with a RadarOnline photographer!)
Back in 2014 Johansen was noted for being in a legal dispute with the publisher of her memoir, 'I, Lisa Marie: The True Story of Elvis Presley’s Real Daughter' after reportedly refusing a DNA test she had agreed to even though she allegedly received $200,000 for the tell-all.
The Swedish woman claims she was born Feb. 1, 1968, to “Priscilla Ann Beaulieu and Elvis Aaron Presley with a childhood a fairy tale with my father as the king and myself as the pampered princess.”
|
|
After Elvis died, Johansen told The ENQUIRER that she remembers very little until Priscilla Beaulieu allegedly whisked her away to Europe.
It's pure madness, yet she still keeps pushing her story to the media.

New 2015 "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" Preview: With the release of the heavily publicised "new' Elvis album at the end of this month we get another sneak preview, this time the newly orchestrated version of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'".
2015 producer Nick Patrick notes, "Presley recorded this song live on Aug. 12, 1970 at the International and it was extremely difficult to match the live vocal to the orchestra. As it was an ‘in concert,’ recording there was a lot of instrument and audience ‘bleed’ on to Elvis’s vocal microphone but with the technology available to us now we were able to reduce that to a minimum. We also took great care when recording the orchestra and other instruments that they all exactly matched the tempo of the original performance and fit like a beautiful tailor-made suit."
The goal of the project was to make Presley’s original vocal performance sound like a new studio recording. For "You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’," Patrick says this song is a good indicator of these new studio tricks. "It gives Elvis the chance to show off every aspect of his
|
|
vocal range, from the beautifully sensitive verses to the operatic / symphonic scale of the chorus’s which was right in line with the overall album concept," he says.
EIN questions whether it really does have more of an impact than the original, stunning version which also featured fine orchestra accompaniment.

Elvis Gold Grand Piano for Auction: Elvis Presley's gold-leaf grand piano is expected to fetch more than half a million dollars at a November auction that will also feature a Beatles logo drum skin used by the British group in their first performances in the United States.
Julien's Auctions said on Monday that Presley played the piano at Graceland. He bought it in 1955 as a gift for his mother. After she died, Priscilla decided to adorn its original walnut finish with 24 karat gold-leaf as a gift for the couple's first wedding anniversary in 1968.
The piano has been on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville for years. Julien's estimates it will fetch between $500,000 - $700,000 at the Nov. 7 auction. It is being sold by a man who obtained it years ago from Graceland and wishes to remain anonymous.
The auction house has put no estimate on the skin from the drum kit played by Ringo Starr when The Beatles performed live on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in New York in 1964 for some 73 million TV viewers.
The drum head also was used for The Beatles 1964 concerts in Washington D.C. and New York's Carnegie Hall.
Elvis and Beatles memorabilia is among the most sought after by rock music collectors but prices don't compare to those paid for movie stars like Marilyn Monroe, whose iconic white "subway dress" from the 1955 movie "The Seven year Itch" sold for $4.6 million in 2011.

Lady Gaga Wears Elvis: The Queen and the King - She's known for her outrageous sense of style when it comes to performing on stage, daring to go where others have not in the couture fashion stakes but Lady Gaga must sure love Elvis as once again she wears her favourite Presley T-shirt for the E! News cameras.
Dressed down in jean cutoffs and an Elvis Presley T-shirt, she looked confident but relaxed, blissful but tired after a long day on set. Then the realization hit. This wasn't Lady Gaga, the untouchable music icon and one of the best-selling musicians of all time. This was Stefani, the 29-year-old New York native whose parents were visiting her on set that day. A real person with real feelings who isn't afraid to open up about her fears and the misconceptions she feels people have about her.
"In order to build strength," the actress-musician said, "you have to usually come from a lot of weakness. So, I'm actually extremely weak in a lot of ways and extremely vulnerable and extremely open and reckless and crazy with my mind, my emotions. I did the Oscars at the top of the year, I was very nervous for that. I prepared, prepared, prepared, and was like, 'I did that and that was great,' but I couldn't even enjoy it because I was just very nervous. "
Lady Gaga wore the same Elvis get up in July at the Monte Carlo Jazz Festival. It's great to see Lady Gaga passing on the ELVIS message to her fans.

Elvis, EPE and a Big Hunk o’Tax Breaks: The Wall Street Journal reports that ... Everything about Elvis Presley was big. Graceland, his iconic Memphis estate, attracts 600,000 people a year to tour the King’s lavish mansion and gawk at his jumpsuits, gold records and memorabilia.
Now the company that manages Graceland is making it even bigger, with a $125 million expansion that includes a new hotel and entertainment complex. But some people aren’t thrilled by one part of the project - the $79 million in local and state tax breaks through which taxpayers are helping to pay for it.
The Graceland incentives are the latest in a string of tax breaks handed out by Memphis, Tenn. to spur economic development. Memphis officials expect the Graceland project to create hundreds of jobs and boost the city’s struggling economy. They say the tax incentives were critical to making the expansion a reality, and that ultimately the city will make back more than what it is laying out.
But some of the incentives irk people like the president of the Memphis Police Association and a candidate in the city’s mayoral election Thursday. He has called for a freeze on new local tax-incentive projects.
“We need a pause button,” said Mr. Williams, citing the more than 400 police officers who have left their jobs recently due to frozen wages and reduced benefits that result from city spending cuts even as Memphis foregoes tax revenues to help Graceland and other businesses. “We need to hold these companies accountable.”
|
|
The Graceland expansion centers on the Guest House at Graceland, a new hotel adjacent to the mansion, with 450 rooms and 16,000 square feet of meeting space plus a 200,000-square-foot entertainment complex would house Elvis memorabilia, shops and restaurants.
Memphis and the state of Tennessee are helping pay for the project in three ways. Together, the three tax breaks have a present value of about $78.6 million over 30 years, said James McLaren, an attorney for EPE.
Some think the Graceland incentives are particularly egregious because Graceland doesn’t have the leverage to threaten to move elsewhere, as other businesses seeking tax breaks often do.
The project will be “generating revenue for the city and county that would not otherwise be there,” said Graceland’s Mr. McLaren.
|
|
Specifically, the expansion is projected to create more than 500 new jobs and generate $50 million in new tax revenue over 15 years, over and above the incentive amounts.
The city predicts the Graceland property involved in the expansion, for instance, will generate $1.2 million in city property taxes a year, about four times what it brought to Memphis in 2013. Even if half of the increase goes toward paying off the construction costs, the city will still collect more taxes than before.

'Elvis: Today' in-depth Legacy Review: On March 10th 1975 Elvis returned to RCA Studio C, LA to record his last significant album. Recorded over three nights, the album featured Elvis covering other songwriter's material. Interestingly with no other recordings left in the RCA vault every single track from the session was released on the one album - and what a fine album it was.
Kicking off with the rocking power of T-R-O-U-B-L-E the album also included some country, gospel, sentimental ballads while also featuring some of Elvis’ personal favourites. Unlike all of his albums since ‘Elvis Country’ this album had a nice overall cohesiveness that probably did reflect Elvis’ musical interests of the time. In 1975 it really was “Elvis Today”.
Now out as a 40th Anniversary legacy release and combined with a wonderfully enjoyable June 1975 concert can it really be worth buying again?
Luckily for Elvis collectors both the live concert and the 'Original Session Mixes' show a vast improvement in audio quality.

'Vintage Rock' Elvis Special on Sale Now: The UK magazine 'Vintage Rock' has an Elvis Special on sale now. The magazine can also be found in good international newsagents.
... Elvis Presley was the ultimate iconoclast. He played many roles throughout his life, from rock’n’roll rebel to God-fearing gentleman, from singer to screen actor, from sex symbol to father. It is perhaps the duplicitous nature of many of these roles that makes the King such a fascinating character. Singing gospel in church or shaking his hips provocatively playing the Hillbilly Cat, Elvis had it all down pat.
The Vintage Rock Collectors Edition Elvis Special is an exploration of the life of the most famous man ever to have walked the earth. We look at his life as a boy growing up in Tupelo, get stories from some of his childhood friends and, in stark contrast, we open the doors to the opulent rooms of Graceland and take a look around.
Also in this special edition we explore Presley’s love of gospel music, examine is influences and take a look at his record collection.
Elsewhere there’s features on his debut album(s) and a detailed look at his classic hit Heartbreak Hotel. Elvis guru Trevor Simpson writes about the golden period of early hits that forged a superstar on both sides of the Atlantic and tells the fascinating story of some of Presley’s British connections – he also offers up an extract from his new book.
Music aside, we cover Elvis in the movies, discuss the powerful female figures in this life and unlock his style secrets to boot…

Sonny West Health Update: The Wests are doing it tough and Sonny's family is trying to raise some funds. EIN has heard from Marty Lacker that Sonny is presently in ICU in the hospital with fluid on his lungs and his wife Judy is having heart surgery and that all this has taken its toll on them financially.
His son has posted, "I want to thank everyone on behalf of our family. All of the prayers and support means so much in these difficult times. We appreciate everyones donations. No donation is too small. I merely want my dad to have the best care available. I believe Elvis would want the same. Prayer is also very strong, especially when two or more are gathered. It makes me feel very good and extremely proud to see how much my dad is loved and cared about.
I have always been extremely proud of my dad Sonny West. He is the toughest man I will ever know in my lifetime. He has beaten stage 4 throat cancer. However, his health has slowly been taking a turn for the worse. To say the least.... my parents are in need of financial help at this time. This is a son asking if you have it somewhere in your heart to give a donation.....I know it would mean the world to my dad and lift his spirits. To see how many people care and are rooting for him. God bless and thank you. - Bryan West. |

Mac Davis is famous for his Elvis compositions 'In the Ghetto', 'A Little Less Conversation', 'Memories', 'Don’t Cry Daddy' and 'Clean Up Your Own Back Yard' as well as Kenny Rogers 'Something’s Burning', Bobby Goldsboro 'Watching Scotty Grow' and Glen Campbell 'Everything a Man Could Ever Need'.

New Graceland "Museum" across the street: EPE has announced plans to shift Elvis' memorabilia and displays across the street to a new museum. Sometime in the next few years, moving trucks will gingerly carry many of the mementoes down the hill and across Elvis Presley Boulevard to be showcased in a new 22,000 square-foot Elvis "career museum.''
But the career musuem will be only one anchor of an L-shaped $35 million entertainment complex that will offer another 104,000 square feet of exhibit and "discovery'' space.
The linear footprint of the rooms should allow Graceland to tell Elvis's story in a more flowing way than it can in a big box like the racquetball building.
Jack Soden, CEO of EPE told this week's neighborhood meeting...
"We're going to move an awful lot of what’s presented in the trophy building and the racquetball building on the Graceland tour, which, if you think about it, we just kinda shoe-horned the entire story of Elvis-the-entertainer into what was a rec room and a racquetball court.
We’re going to do all of that justice, the gold records, the jumpsuits, the guitars, the awards, all the things related to his amazing, iconic career. |
|
So now we’ll have how Elvis and where Elvis lived, how Elvis and why Elvis is the greatest entertainer ever.''
Moving so much of the memorabilia out of the mansion raises some questions: What will become of the newly cleared spaces in the trophy and racquetball buildings?
Will EPE seek to restore those rooms to appear exactly as they were when Elvis was alive and then will visitors have to pay more to see both the mansion and the memorabilia?
The existing strand of souvenir shops and exhibit and souvenir spaces -- fashioned out of an old strip shopping center or two -- will be demolished to make room.

Col Parker's Office To be Demolished? : There's no doubt about it, in one unsuspecting Madison home office, Elvis was definitely in the building! But while Col Parker's home office in Madison, just eight miles from downtown Nashville, is packed with stories from Elvis Presley's career, they may not be enough to save it from demolition.
But now the site where “Colonel” Tom Parker made Elvis Presley a star has been named to a list of Nashville’s endangered historic properties as the desire to save history runs up against the skyrocketing value of the corner lot.
The stone building is unspectacular in terms of architecture, but stories of Elvis linger, says attorney Steve North, who has owned the building and used it as a law office for 20 years. |
|
Inside, the shrewd and eccentric Parker managed the Elvis empire for decades.
“We would drive by that property and we would look to see if the pink Cadillac was there,” said North, a Madison native now aged 74. “If it was there, we knew Elvis was in town and if we would hang around, we would see Elvis out in the yard, raking leaves, or doing whatever.”
“Some of the most important decisions in the history of American entertainment took place right there. But so far, not a single person has come forward interested in the property because of the building.”
North has tried to sell for years. He has turned down offers because he’s been seeking a buyer who wants to protect the building, including its vintage wall-to-wall wood paneling in rooms where Elvis played pool and where his fan letters piled up.
North says he’s now at a point where he’ll sell even if it means the home is bulldozed.

The tale of a talented singer and his part in the Elvis-is-alive myth is stranger than fiction, and comes with a sad, shocking ending. 4 / 5 stars."
They note, "John Updike’s comment about celebrity being a mask that eats into the face occurred to me watching this desperately sad film. It is the story of Jimmy Ellis, a singer from Alabama who was cursed with having a voice identical to that of Elvis Presley. He travelled to Nashville and tried to break into the music business – but found that everyone was only interested in his eerie soundalike resemblance to the King. Poignantly, he even released a single entitled I’m Not Trying to Be Like Elvis.
Then an extraordinary disaster-cum-opportunity occurred; in August 1977, the real Elvis died, and cunning record producer Shelby Singleton – who had become owner of the legendary Sun Records – marketed Ellis as a mysterious singer called Orion who wore a mask. This tongue-in-cheek publicity campaign tried to imply to an excitable and credulous public that it actually was Elvis, and the mask was to conceal botched plastic surgery Presley had undertaken after faking his death to escape the burden of world-fame. Jimmy Ellis’s preposterous career more or less created the Elvis-is-alive myth that persists to this day, and Ellis became imprisoned by Elvis’s ghost. There is some intriguing speculation about Ellis’s background and a sad and shocking ending. This is a movie that might have interested cultural theorist Jean Baudrillard, that connoisseur of simulacra. Jimmy Ellis’s story really is stranger than fiction."

"You Can Have Her" Elvis' One-Off Performance: Elvis Presley appeared four times at The Forum of Inglewood in Los Angeles in the 1970’s over two days, three years apart. The first in 1970 on 14 November during just his second tour and the second on 11 May 1974.
The 1974 shows were attended by British rock group Led Zeppellin and both performances had very little difference in terms of the setlist.
Of the 37,000 who attended those shows the half which made their way into the Forum for the afternoon show had no idea that within that show would be two and a half minutes which would set this show apart and the treat that awaited them.
Both shows were excellent with Elvis in good voice and mood – a combination which always proved to be a winner. During the afternoon show between ‘Love Me Tender’ and ‘Steamroller Blues’ something magical and quite wonderful happened. In a moment of pure Elvis spontaneity he started to sing Ray Hamilton’s 1961 hit ‘You Can Have Her’.
The song seems to progress in stages with the passing of each verse firstly Elvis shouts the songs title then Elvis and pianist Glen D. Hardin start of before Ronnie Tutt joins in with the cymbals but at the start of the next verse it’s full blown drums. By the end you can hear the clapping along as everyone seems to be playing and singing with a smile on their face and it’s almost just like they never want it to end but eventually Elvis does just that by bringing the song to a close.
A studio version could never have caught this fun in quite the same way and the audience recording seems to add to the ‘fly on the wall’ feel to this recording. I doubt if anyone in the crowd that afternoon had any inclination as to how special a moment they were witnessing. |

Elvis & Michael Bublé 'Fever' duet: Elvis' "new" album 'If I Can Dream' is due out Oct. 30. It features versions of his classic songs reworked by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with vocals from various artists like Michael Bublé, Il Volo, and backing from Duane Eddy. (see details below)
The special preview of the record's Elvis vs Bublé track “Fever” has been debuted and in a video clip. Bublé talks about lending his voice to Presley’s iconic tune. “I do open my show with it and I always loved it. I think it’s a really incredible sexy, smoldering song… For me to do this today is one of the greatest things I’ve ever done. this is a highlight of my career.”

EIN notes that for us it is a disappointment that it is a male duet rather than a sexually steaming "Man vs Woman" duet with an artist such as Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Rhianna, Shakira .. any top-selling female with a deep power-vocal. Both Elvis and Michael Bublé have similar baritones and we would have preferred more of a contast. But, after all, it is one's own personal choice.

Elvis, wearing a loud plaid jacket, greeted the audience from a set decorated with stylized guitar shapes. He announced that the show was 'probably the greatest honor I have ever had in my life', and then launched into 'Don't Be Cruel'. - See more at: http://www.elvispresleymusic.com.au/pictures/1956_september_9_ed_sullivan_show.html#sthash.e9vqjWZv.dpuf
59 years since Elvis classic 'The Ed Sullivan Show': It can be argued that September 9, 1956 is the day that rock ‘n’ roll truly established itself as the dominant musical genre in America – and therefore the western world – as its poster boy Elvis Presley made his sensational debut on the country’s most popular TV programme, the Ed Sullivan Show.
Sullivan, a lugubrious former journalist, was initially against the idea of Presley performing on his show, but his mind was changed when the singer made his first national television appearance with rival Steve Allen, immediately boosting Allen’s ratings.
In fact, he had earlier turned down an offer of single appearance by Elvis on the show for $5,000; by the time he realised his mistake Presley was a major star, and his wily manager Colonel Tom Parker was able to negotiate three appearances for $50,000.
As it happened, Sullivan was in hospital recuperating from a car accident on the day of Presley’s debut. It was down to stand-in host Charles Laughton to introduce the young idol, who performed Don't Be Cruel, Love Me Tender, Hound Dog and Ready Teddy.
|
|
Elvis was in LA filming his first movie "Love Me Tender" so was not actually in the New York studio with host Charles Laughton but played to his own fans in the LA studio.
Elvis wore a loud plaid jacket and told the audience the show was "Probably the greatest honor I have ever had in my life".
Contrary to popular belief, this was not the performance in which Presley was only filmed from the waist up. Although to begin the cameras mainly stayed on the top half of his body, he was shown in full-length for his final two songs.
However, it was clear that his movements were causing excited reactions from some of the girls in the studio audience, so during his final number the cameras began to find tighter shots of the singer so as not to disturb the more easily offended members of the viewing public.
The episode was watched by 60 million people, an impressive 82.6% of the evening’s TV audience, but Sullivan was still concerned about the questions of taste surrounding Presley’s hip-swivelling performances.
By the time of his third appearance on the show in January 1957, somebody had decided enough was enough. Elvis performed a total of seven songs – but for each, he was filmed solely from the waist up.

Elvis biographer Peter Guralnick Interview: EPE has begun a new "Gates of Graceland" web series which will explore the many different facets of Elvis' life and career. Not only was Elvis the King of Rock 'n' Roll, he also starred in 33 films, topped the R&B and country charts, won Grammys for his gospel music, served in the U.S. Army and more.
The series will also take a look at Elvis' beloved Graceland, as well as his ongoing legacy and impact on the world.
In the first EPE episode, host Tom Brown interviews Elvis biographer Peter Guralnick about Elvis' time in Las Vegas.
The first interview with Peter Guralnick runs 15 minutes.
In it Guralnick discusses meeting Colonel Parker and getting the "seal of approval".
It focuses on Elvis in Las Vegas and is a little of an EPE sell for their new Westgate exhibition - but it still interesting to hear Guralnick's thoughts.
|
|
Fans sometimes complain that Guralnick is a little "Pro" Colonel Parker and this interview gives you a glimpse in to why that might be.
The interview also features clips of Elvis as well as (possible?) unseen footage of the crowd waiting for Elvis' very first July 31 1969 Vegas show as well as some early photos of Overton Park, Memphis.
Guralnick notes, "Elvis was as great an ethno-musicologist as anyone who has gone through college and got a degree".
Rather oddly Tom Brown talks about the 2015 Elvis show at the Hilton Showroom yet the "Elvis Experience" finished there months ago.

Three New FTD Releases for October: FTD have announced three new releases for October. A 1976 Live Soundboard, Movie soundtrack "Classic Album" and a unique collectible double-vinyl release.
1. 'Elvis In West Texas' a new soundboard contains the evening show in Odessa on May 30, 1976.
A thoroughly great show with repertoire highlights in “Help Me Make It Through The Night” and “It’s Now Or Never”.
It is packaged in a digipack 5” format with a 12-page booklet of 1976 photos.
The show features the pretty regular 1976 set-list including an 8 minute 'I Got Woman / Amen' but also highlights 'Funny How Time Slips Away' and ' Help Me Make It Through The Night'. This is the second 1976 show FTD have released from Elvis' MAY/JUNE 1976 tour #18 - as FTD's sixth release back in 2000 was 'Tucson' from June 1, 1976 just two days later. |
|
Recorded at County Coliseum, Odessa, Texas on May 30, 1976, at the evening show. “See See Rider” and the talk about Odessa following it, are from the afternoon show the same day.
A short piece of the introductions was not recorded.
Go here to EIN's FTD/SONY 2015 releases for full tracklist
2. 'Live A Little, Love A Little' new movie soundtrack 'Classic Album' release.
It comes in a 7” digipack with booklet. Due to the fact that there are only four songs in the movie, this is a single disc with selected outtakes.
The tracklist has not yet been finalised but FTD contributor Ken Jensen notes that it will include "newly discovered session tapes." We have no info as yet whether these are just better quality versions - but the rumour is new outtakes have been found! |
|
3. 'Moody Blue', special Double-Vinyl version.
Continuing on from the popular special vinyl editions, FTD is pleased to announce the release of “Moody Blue” in its original discarded art layout for the first time.
To create a unique collectible, it is issued in clear vinyl and each pressing is hand numbered.
This edition is limited to 1500.
This double vinyl edition includes, session outtakes, rough mixes, undubbed versions but for some reason misses out on the full-length version of 'Pledging My Love'.

"A Touch Of Gold Lamé" OUT NOW: Elvis Files "A Touch Of Gold Lamé" is out now and getting great initial reviews. Being in Australia EIN does not have their copy as yet.
However the well-respected Elvis Sessions expert Keith Flynn has commented....
"Not having worked on "A Touch Of Gold Lamé" at all, I have now taken some time to look over the book which I received on Friday, and I have to say this book is the most comprehensive detailing of Elvis' 1957 concerts I have seen, and it amazes me that 58 years after these shows were performed, Erik still manages to find new photographs that have never been seen before, and in such beautiful quality!
I actually found some listings of songs and transcripts of interviews that I hadn’t seen before too, which was another bonus for me.
As always, and as we’ve now come to expect from Erik, the printing is to the highest standards, and the text accompanying the photo’s is second-to-none, although I did find one small typo on the back cover, where ‘outery’ should have read ‘outcry’, but that does not in any way take anything away from the overall presentation of the book.
This to me, is a book I'll look to quite often as a form of reference.
Well done Erik and the gang, for a truly breathtaking look at Elvis in 1957, when he was still in his prime and at the top of his game, before he was tamed by the army years. -10 out of 10!"

David Briggs, Putt and Jerry Phillips On Elvis: Due to his appearance at Elvis Week David Brigg , Norbert Putnam plus Jerry Phillips recently talked to TimesDaily.com.
Keyboardist David Briggs, a Killen AL native, was originally a member of the first FAME Recording Studios rhythm section.
"Elvis kind of blazed a trail and path so bright, nobody has ever been able to extinguish the flame, he was just one of a kind. He was so generous with his praise".
Briggs spent a week at Graceland, for the Jungle Room sessions.
"We talked, watched TV and played games, I stayed a week and finally said I have to go back to Nashville."
Like Briggs, Putnam said Elvis was a laid-back artist and easy to work for. He said Presley always would make a grand entrance.
Putnam adds, "Elvis always had a big smile on his face. He would come in and hold his arms up and say, ‘Hey gang, you guys ready to do it again?’ " |
|
Instead of getting right to work, Presley liked to tell the musicians stories. "Later on, I’m looking back and I wondered why we didn’t go right to work. The first time he wanted to make sure we were totally relaxed. I don’t want to say he had an aura about him, but he almost had an aura about him. He was the most beautiful man I’d ever seen. His hair was perfectly jet black. I remember being a little disappointed he wasn’t eight feet tall."
"His voice was soft like mine was, like he didn’t want to interrupt anyone over in the corner. He’d have us rolling in the floor. He was so good at this."
Felton Jarvis, the producer, eventually would come out of the control room and coax Presley into starting the session.
"Elvis says, ‘What’s the first song?’ He’s just so relaxed. I think it was to get us relaxed."
Before his days with RCA, Presley recorded his first tracks at Sam Phillips' Sun Recording Studios.
Jerry Phillips (Sam's son) explains how he and his brother, Knox, grew up differently than other people.
"I remember dad bringing home Elvis' record, he wanted us to hear it. It was what he was looking for all along. He was very excited about it."
|
|
Phillips said he has great memories of Presley, dating back to his childhood. He said Presley would visit the Phillips home, but it would be late at night.
"Elvis could never get out until after midnight, or he would absolutely get mobbed. If he stopped at a service station, within 10 minutes there would be a mob. "
He said Presley would drop by their home after midnight, and Phillips’ parents would let him and his brother get up and miss school the next day to spend time with Presley.
"Elvis was a very special person, a very humble individual. At the top of his game, he was the most handsome guy you’d ever seen in your life, the coolest guy you’d ever want to meet."
He said Presley always would have more than one woman with him. Phillips said it was true Presley would address his parents as Mr. and Mrs. Phillips.
"He was one of the biggest influences in my life," Phillips said. "He would come sit around with a guitar in the living room and play music. He was the biggest star in the world, but he was still very polite and humble. I have great memories of Elvis Presley."

EIN Joyce Bova Interview: Joyce Bova worked in Washington DC and had a fascinating relationship with Elvis that lasted between 1969 and 1972. The story of which she wrote about in her 1994 book, 'Don't Ask Forever: My Love Affair With Elvis' has recently been re-published as an updated E-Book.
Bova was a Capitol Hill staffer on the House Armed Services Committee when she first met Elvis in 1969 in Las Vegas during her vacation.
'Don't Ask Forever' is the intimate true story of two star-crossed lovers-and a revealing portrait of an Elvis Presley that also looked at the crazy day-to-day world rarely featured in other Elvis books.
As the book publicity stated, "It started out like a fairy tale. She was a beautiful, hardworking Congressional aide. He was America's most explosive entertainer. They met one night in Las Vegas in 1969 - a night that changed Joyce's life forever".
Go here as EIN's Piers Beagley recently caught up with Joyce Bova to talk about her incredible times with Elvis and to learn more about the new revised and update Ebook publication.

Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage!
The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
Go here to our detailed 'TIGER MAN' spotlight as EIN's Piers Beagley puts in the hard yards to check the facts from the fantasy .

Forever Elvis - A 2015 commemorative Spotlight: Elvis touched the soul of every true fan and that hot August night in 1977 the fans returned the love. The funeral for the famous musician stopped the city. Thousands of people packed the streets, sharing their grief and love for the man who was gone. They followed the casket, which was festooned with flowers, and then, together, started singing one of the musician's most popular songs. Never before had so many voices joined in glorious harmony.... There is a universality to grief.
Just as mourners in Milan did back in 1901 as they joined together to sing one of Verdi's signature tunes, so too in August 1977 did people gather from all over the world at the gates of Graceland to mourn over their lost idol.
EIN's Piers Beagley contributes a special Spotlight for August 16th - And Elvis will live, Forever.

Listen to Elvis' Newly Orchestrated 'If I Can Dream': The new SONY compilation will attempt to prove that Elvis Presley was more than just the King of Rock & Roll. The album, If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley With the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, pairs one of the most recognizable voices of the past half-century with classical arrangements that don't so much overtake the original versions that fans hold near and dear as "sweeten them" - says Rolling Stone
The record's first single is "If I Can Dream," the plea for a better world that Presley sang as the closing number of his legendary '68 Comeback Special. In the context of that performance, the song came off as a dramatic showstopper. The updated track, which adds some tasteful strings and a smart horn arrangement that beefs up the one on the original, isn't a different so much as a fuller version of the song. - CLICK HERE TO LISTEN.

'If I Can Dream' New CD Announcement: Today Legacy Recordings announced the new major Elvis release, 'If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra' for October 30, 2015. The remarkable new album features classic Elvis vocal performances with brand-new orchestral accompaniment, along with a duet with Michael Bublé, and appearances by Il Volo and Duane Eddy.
An exciting revisit of Elvis’ work, If I Can Dream focuses on the iconic artist’s unmistakable voice, emphasizing the pure power of The King of Rock and Roll. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London with acclaimed producers Don Reedman and Nick Patrick, the 14-track album features Elvis’ most dramatic original performances augmented with lush new arrangements by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. “This would be a dream come true for Elvis,” Priscilla Presley says of the project. “He would have loved to play with such a prestigious symphony orchestra. The music…the force that you feel with his voice and the orchestra is exactly what he would have done.” Don Reedman also commented, “Abbey Road Studios and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra are as good as it gets and Elvis deserves as good as it gets.” |
|
The album features a scintillating duet with best-selling jazz-pop singer Michael Bublé on “Fever.” The album also includes additional contributions by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Duane Eddy adding his signature sound to “An American Trilogy” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and Italian operatic pop trio Il Volo lending their outstanding vocals to “It’s Now or Never.”
As producer Nick Patrick said, “This is the record he would have loved to make.” If I Can Dream also highlights Elvis Presley’s diverse musical tastes and appreciation for great vocalists spanning a variety of genres from standards to opera. If I Can Dream is part of the ongoing ELVIS 80th Birthday Celebration in 2015.

There are so many stunning photos available - so it was just not possible to do justice to Presley's final four years in just one volume.
The first book 'The Elvis Files Vol. 7 1974-1975' is planned for August 2015 publication.
'The Elvis Files Vol. 8 1976-1977' is planned for Spring 2016.
Also another new book underway, "Greater Than Ever - A Touch Of Gold Lame" an in-depth look at Elvis tours of 1957.
And also not forgetting the quarterly 'Elvis Files Magazine'.

FTD "What now, What next, What If? PART TWO ": The FTD label has been doing an excellent job at looking at the recording anthology of Elvis Presley and releasing every significant LP or recording session on a 1CD or 2CD ‘Classic Album’ version.
However, as noted with the recent "ELVIS" second LP release and the Christmas album, there are less and less outtakes and studio sessions left in the vaults.
With our new article “What now, What next, What If?” EIN contributor Ian Garfield examines exactly how FTD might present their future 'Classic Album' releases.
This second article covers the possible releases Speedway; Live a Little, Love a Little; Charro, The Trouble with Girls and Change of Habit.
Go here as EIN also wants YOUR input and ideas - and we will send the final suggestions to Roger and Ernst at FTD.

The book includes around 3,000 stunning high-quality photographs many of them previously unseen, relating to the time period in question.
The promotional publicity for this three-volume set was very impressive with the original publishing date of August 2014 missed as more photographs were discovered and the content expanded. Finally published in December 2014, Elvis enthusiast Brian Quinn checks out this astounding deluxe package to discover if it is as good as promised.
