Sonny West Health Update: The Wests are doing it tough and Sonny's family is trying to raise some funds. EIN has heard from Marty Lacker that Sonny is presently in ICU in the hospital with fluid on his lungs and his wife Judy is having heart surgery and that all this has taken its toll on them financially.
His son has posted, "I want to thank everyone on behalf of our family. All of the prayers and support means so much in these difficult times. We appreciate everyones donations. No donation is too small. I merely want my dad to have the best care available. I believe Elvis would want the same. Prayer is also very strong, especially when two or more are gathered. It makes me feel very good and extremely proud to see how much my dad is loved and cared about.
I have always been extremely proud of my dad Sonny West. He is the toughest man I will ever know in my lifetime. He has beaten stage 4 throat cancer. However, his health has slowly been taking a turn for the worse. To say the least.... my parents are in need of financial help at this time. This is a son asking if you have it somewhere in your heart to give a donation.....I know it would mean the world to my dad and lift his spirits. To see how many people care and are rooting for him. God bless and thank you. - Bryan West. |

New Graceland "Museum" across the street: EPE has announced plans to shift Elvis' memorabilia and displays across the street to a new museum. Sometime in the next few years, moving trucks will gingerly carry many of the mementoes down the hill and across Elvis Presley Boulevard to be showcased in a new 22,000 square-foot Elvis "career museum.''
But the career musuem will be only one anchor of an L-shaped $35 million entertainment complex that will offer another 104,000 square feet of exhibit and "discovery'' space.
The linear footprint of the rooms should allow Graceland to tell Elvis's story in a more flowing way than it can in a big box like the racquetball building.
Jack Soden, CEO of EPE told this week's neighborhood meeting...
"We're going to move an awful lot of what’s presented in the trophy building and the racquetball building on the Graceland tour, which, if you think about it, we just kinda shoe-horned the entire story of Elvis-the-entertainer into what was a rec room and a racquetball court.
We’re going to do all of that justice, the gold records, the jumpsuits, the guitars, the awards, all the things related to his amazing, iconic career. |
|
So now we’ll have how Elvis and where Elvis lived, how Elvis and why Elvis is the greatest entertainer ever.''
Moving so much of the memorabilia out of the mansion raises some questions: What will become of the newly cleared spaces in the trophy and racquetball buildings?
Will EPE seek to restore those rooms to appear exactly as they were when Elvis was alive and then will visitors have to pay more to see both the mansion and the memorabilia?
The existing strand of souvenir shops and exhibit and souvenir spaces -- fashioned out of an old strip shopping center or two -- will be demolished to make room.

Col Parker's Office To be Demolished? : There's no doubt about it, in one unsuspecting Madison home office, Elvis was definitely in the building! But while Col Parker's home office in Madison, just eight miles from downtown Nashville, is packed with stories from Elvis Presley's career, they may not be enough to save it from demolition.
But now the site where “Colonel” Tom Parker made Elvis Presley a star has been named to a list of Nashville’s endangered historic properties as the desire to save history runs up against the skyrocketing value of the corner lot.
The stone building is unspectacular in terms of architecture, but stories of Elvis linger, says attorney Steve North, who has owned the building and used it as a law office for 20 years. |
|
Inside, the shrewd and eccentric Parker managed the Elvis empire for decades.
“We would drive by that property and we would look to see if the pink Cadillac was there,” said North, a Madison native now aged 74. “If it was there, we knew Elvis was in town and if we would hang around, we would see Elvis out in the yard, raking leaves, or doing whatever.”
“Some of the most important decisions in the history of American entertainment took place right there. But so far, not a single person has come forward interested in the property because of the building.”
North has tried to sell for years. He has turned down offers because he’s been seeking a buyer who wants to protect the building, including its vintage wall-to-wall wood paneling in rooms where Elvis played pool and where his fan letters piled up.
North says he’s now at a point where he’ll sell even if it means the home is bulldozed.

"Orion" documentary rated by UK Guardian: The UK's quality newspaper The Guardian has come out in praise of the film "Orion: The Man Who Would Be King" noting it as "A poignant story of Elvis soundalike. The tale of a talented singer and his part in the Elvis-is-alive myth is stranger than fiction, and comes with a sad, shocking ending. 4 / 5 stars."
They note, "John Updike’s comment about celebrity being a mask that eats into the face occurred to me watching this desperately sad film. It is the story of Jimmy Ellis, a singer from Alabama who was cursed with having a voice identical to that of Elvis Presley. He travelled to Nashville and tried to break into the music business – but found that everyone was only interested in his eerie soundalike resemblance to the King. Poignantly, he even released a single entitled I’m Not Trying to Be Like Elvis.
Then an extraordinary disaster-cum-opportunity occurred; in August 1977, the real Elvis died, and cunning record producer Shelby Singleton – who had become owner of the legendary Sun Records – marketed Ellis as a mysterious singer called Orion who wore a mask. This tongue-in-cheek publicity campaign tried to imply to an excitable and credulous public that it actually was Elvis, and the mask was to conceal botched plastic surgery Presley had undertaken after faking his death to escape the burden of world-fame. Jimmy Ellis’s preposterous career more or less created the Elvis-is-alive myth that persists to this day, and Ellis became imprisoned by Elvis’s ghost. There is some intriguing speculation about Ellis’s background and a sad and shocking ending. This is a movie that might have interested cultural theorist Jean Baudrillard, that connoisseur of simulacra. Jimmy Ellis’s story really is stranger than fiction."

The Imperials Joe Moscheo Fundraiser: Joe Moscheo is a former member of the Imperials gospel quartet that worked with Elvis Presley from the May 1966 'How Great Thou Art' sessions through to his live performances from 1969 to late 1971. He sang on both of Elvis'
Grammy Award winning gospel albums 'How Great Thou Art' and 'He Touched Me'. Sadly Joe Joe Moscheo has been struck down with a degenerative neurological disease and his friends and family would like your help.
.... As Joe would say, "Hey ya'll." This fundraiser is brought to you by a group of folks who have known and loved Joe Moscheo for many years.
As you may know, Joe has been blessed to have a career in music spanning decades. In the process, he has traveled the world and toured with the elite of the business, not the least of whom was Elvis from 1969-1972 with the legendary Gospel group, The Imperials.
A few years back, Joe was diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disease that has quickly robbed him of mobility and the strength to perform. This year, his condition worsened, making it necessary for him to move to an assisted living facility in Nashville. Anyone who knows him, knows what a blow this has been and how it abruptly ended his career and his ability to take care of his family. We've known few people in this or any industry who have done more for others than has Joe, most especially while he was serving BMI. |
|
Please know that now is the time for all who are reading this to help Joe. His illness and loss of work / income has put him and his devoted wife, Judy, in a difficult financial position and the needs are immediate.
May our Lord richly bless you as you bless others.
Moscheo says of Elvis, "My favourite performance of Elvis is from the '68 special when he sings "If I Can Dream." But he sings, "If I can dream of a better land". It’s so convincing and it’s so honest, and that’s the real Elvis.
Elvis did have his demons. It’s really hard to imagine a guy that was Elvis Presley could be without that. But from being around him in these intimate settings, I really feel that he was a Christian, I really do. Later on I gave him a Bible - it’s really hard for me to talk about it. I said, "Elvis, I got something for you. I know you’re really struggling, and I know you’re having a hard time, but every answer you need is in this book. All you have to do is read it. It’s real simple now, it’s plain English. Read this book." And we hugged, and I left. And that’s the last time I saw him.

"You Can Have Her" Elvis' One-Off Performance: Elvis Presley appeared four times at The Forum of Inglewood in Los Angeles in the 1970’s over two days, three years apart. The first in 1970 on 14 November during just his second tour and the second on 11 May 1974.
The 1974 shows were attended by British rock group Led Zeppellin and both performances had very little difference in terms of the setlist.
Of the 37,000 who attended those shows the half which made their way into the Forum for the afternoon show had no idea that within that show would be two and a half minutes which would set this show apart and the treat that awaited them.
Both shows were excellent with Elvis in good voice and mood – a combination which always proved to be a winner. During the afternoon show between ‘Love Me Tender’ and ‘Steamroller Blues’ something magical and quite wonderful happened. In a moment of pure Elvis spontaneity he started to sing Ray Hamilton’s 1961 hit ‘You Can Have Her’.
The song seems to progress in stages with the passing of each verse firstly Elvis shouts the songs title then Elvis and pianist Glen D. Hardin start of before Ronnie Tutt joins in with the cymbals but at the start of the next verse it’s full blown drums. By the end you can hear the clapping along as everyone seems to be playing and singing with a smile on their face and it’s almost just like they never want it to end but eventually Elvis does just that by bringing the song to a close.
A studio version could never have caught this fun in quite the same way and the audience recording seems to add to the ‘fly on the wall’ feel to this recording. I doubt if anyone in the crowd that afternoon had any inclination as to how special a moment they were witnessing. |

Cissy Houston gets Lifetime Achievement Award: Grammy-winning gospel great Cissy Houston, mother of late Whitney Houston will be honored at a gospel-music awards show in Charlotte, N.C., this weekend.
The first Gospel Image Awards will bestow its first Lifetime Achievement Award on Houston, who turns 82 next week, for her contributions to the musical genre that combines praising God with sophisticated entertainment values.
"Miss Cissy has worked for the gospel industry for a very, very long time and she’s very deserving of this award," said Diana Davis, executive producer.
Houston is already a nationally re-known gospel |
|
singer, but she's been more in the news lately for tragic reasons: Her daughter drowned in a bathtub in a Beverly Hills hotel three years ago, and her granddaughter died in July, six months after she was found unresponsive in a bathtub in her Georgia home. Bobbi Kristina was just 22.
But long before that, Houston was in the well-known vocal group, the Sweet Inspirations, who performed alongside artists like Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley.
The original Sweet Inspirations featured Cissy Houston (left in photo), Myrna Smith, Sylvia Shemwell and Estelle Brown. Elvis' infamous "Laughing" 'Are You Lonesome Tonight' was from the Vegas August 26 1969 midnight performance (see EIN review here) and it was Cissy Houston who kept on singing the soaring, perfect "soprano obbligato" as Elvis fell apart with unstoppable laughter.
Houston left the Sweet Inspirations in late 1969 to pursue a solo career. She won two Grammys in 1998 and 1996 for traditional soul gospel albums, 'He Leadeth Me' and 'Face to Face'.

Petition to help Graceland Randers: EIN recently reported the news that EPE are suing Graceland Randers for the use of the copyrighted name (see story below).
Danish Elvis fan Thomas Mogensen has told EIN of an on-line petition because ..."I love what Graceland Randers do for Elvis fans, in Denmark, Sacndinavia and the rest of Europe. I don't like the fact, that Graceland Randers is being sued for keeping Elvis legacy alive while providing Elvis fans with great opportunities."
Many Elvis fans share the same opinion with me, and therefore Kasper Dahl Finderup (Danish Elvis fan) has started a petition, where EPE is asked to withdraw their lawsuit against Graceland Randers.

Elvis' "Russian Tsar" ring for Auction: Elvis' famous double headed eagle "Russian Tsar" crest claw ring is up for UK auction, with its incredible history plus well over 100 photographs of it being worn by Elvis - and for nearly US$50 Thousand!
The ring originally belonged to Elvis' father, Vernon Presley, who wore it often in 1972 and 1973. The earliest photo of Elvis wearing it are from his opening performance at the Las egas Hilton on 26th January 1972. During the early part of 1974 Elvis 'borrowed' the ring again to wear on stage and wore it many times thereafter.
Some two weeks before Elvis was due to perform in Mobile Alabama on August 29th 1976, local man Tommy Milham was first in line to buy tickets at the Municipal Auditorium, where he took his place early in the evening and stayed in line all night until the doors opened in the morning. The same evening the staff from the Mobile press came out and interviewed him for the newspaper reporting how he waited in line with hot drinks, lunch and a portable chair to sleep on. Mr Milham sat in the front row for the concert and when Elvis spotted him waving the newspaper with the headline 'First In Line With Patience' , Elvis approached him and took the newspaper. He read the headline, and thanked the fan by asking if he'd like a scarf. Mr Milham pointed at the huge ring Elvis was wearing and shouted "No, I want that ring!" Elvis told him that he couldn't give his ring away and handed him a scarf instead. Mr Milham shouted again, demanding the ring. Elvis finally shrugged his shoulders
|
|
and with an embarrassed look he slipped the ring from his finger and handed it to Mr Milham. The incredible gesture made the New York Times and some television coverage too.
The current owner recalls... "Being an avid Elvis collector, I've had some nice pieces of his jewellery in the past, but most weren't pieces that Elvis would have remembered. The items simply weren't close enough to Elvis for me and I wanted to own something that was very meaningful to him. ..
On August 9th 2003, whilst surfing the internet, I came across this ring for sale. .. I met Mr Milham at his bank, where he had kept the ring in a vault for 28 years. I handed him the funds and he gave me the ring, and I was back in England the following day".
The lot includes the numerous newspaper clippings, a legal affidavit from Tommy Milhan and further research into the provenance of the ring, including a detailed catalogue of around 100 concerts when the ring was worn in public by 'The King'.
Estimate US$47,000

Scot tries to sell SUN 'That's All Right' with £29k price-tag!: In the news is another story of fans trying to make money off The King. A Glaswegian seller has put up for sale one of the most sought-after recordings by Elvis Presley at an asking price of £29,000. But to be honest, he is very unlikely to get it. Most keen Elvis collectors would already own a copy and "excellent condition" copies usually sell for under $4,000.
The story notes that "It is an original first pressing copy of his first single “That’s Alright” backed with “Blue Moon of Kentucky” – one of only 20,000 copies that were sold on its release in 1954.
The unnamed seller said the disc was “hard to get in any condition” and had the “Sun hiss and surface noise” expected from recordings of that era from the Sun studio. Will Campbell, from Shpock website, said it was one of the “rarest Elvis records in the world”, and rated by Rolling Stone among the top 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. “It is an original first pressing from the famous Sun studios and I would call this record very good (VG) grade on the goldmine scale.
“Very good grade records may have lost some of their lustre on the vinyl and some hiss will be heard. The seller of this record seems to be pretty open about the hiss.”

Elvis & Michael Bublé 'Fever' duet: Elvis' "new" album 'If I Can Dream' is due out Oct. 30. It features versions of his classic songs reworked by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with vocals from various artists like Michael Bublé, Il Volo, and backing from Duane Eddy. (see details below)
The special preview of the record's Elvis vs Bublé track “Fever” has been debuted and in a video clip. Bublé talks about lending his voice to Presley’s iconic tune. “I do open my show with it and I always loved it. I think it’s a really incredible sexy, smoldering song… For me to do this today is one of the greatest things I’ve ever done. this is a highlight of my career.”

EIN notes that for us it is a disappointment that it is a male duet rather than a sexually steaming "Man vs Woman" duet with an artist such as Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Rhianna, Shakira .. any top-selling female with a deep power-vocal. Both Elvis and Michael Bublé have similar baritones and we would have preferred more of a contast. But, after all, it is one's own personal choice.

Elvis Crystal portrait by Hunstanton artist: Made from over 95,000 Swarovski crystals, a portrait of Elvis Presley created by Hunstanton artist Allen Kew is to go on sale later this month.
Mr Kew started by painting a picture of Elvis and then he began the painstaking task of gluing each crystal, most of which are just two to three millimetres in diameter, on to the 30-in square picture, one by one.
With a mixture of patterns, including his unique swirling design, the colours of the crystals change and refract light in a rainbow spectrum.
Photographed at his studio just before the picture was sent for framing, Mr Kew said: “I’ve worked on this piece on and off for about four months; it took a lot of patience but I loved doing it and am delighted with the end result.”

New French Elvis Comic Book: A new stylish comic book by authors Philippe Chanoinat and Fabrice Le Henanff simply called "Elvis" the 'Jungle edition' featuring 80 pages - it will be out late October 2015.
As they note, "When Elvis enters the Sun studios in 1954 to record his first single, Elvis is far from suspecting that it will revolutionize the music and lifestyle of youth worldwide".
This album tells the story of a little guy who came from nowhere and who ended up becoming the world's biggest super-star. Today all the musicians who try for the same in a rock'n'roll in any style whatsoever should be able to do it, whether they are aware of it or not. But 38 years later the legend of ELVIS shines at the very top, near the celestial stars - and who's light will never die. "

James Burton & Keith Richards: Every year UK's GQ magazine celebrates their annual "GQ Men of The Year" Awards where they invite the biggest names in Britain and abroad to spend a stellar evening together as the key wards are presented. Last week Keith Richard was awarded the 2015 (Living) Legend Award and it was presented by Elvis guitarist James Burton .
There are legends and then there are legends: true living icons who transcend their trade and seem more creatures of myth than reality. Figures such as Jack Nicholson, David Bowie, Muhammed Ali - and, of course, Keith Richards. The most celebrated member of one of the most celebrated rock bands of all time - and one of the most talented players to ever pick up a guitar. The same could be said of the super-talented James Burton from Elvis' TCB Band.
Despite the numerous stories of Richards' hedonism, it is the music that will ultimately endure. Songs such as "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Gimme Shelter" in which Richards played the only guitar tracks. The strength and diversity of the Stones' back catalogue can arguably be matched only by The Beatles. The strength of Richards' musical legend can be matched by virtually nobody: the soul of rock and roll.

Mayweather Vs Elvis: Throughout most of his career, Elvis Presley was the highest paid performer in show business. He was managed by an old school flim-flam artist called Col Tom Parker, who passed himself off as a kind of Southern gentleman even though he was actually a Dutchman named Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk.
Parker’s managerial maxim was to give the public as little of Elvis as possible, all the while maintaining that The Pelvis was doing everything he could to make his fans happy. It was his habit to load up Presley’s concerts with the grimmest assortment of local comedians, jugglers, barbershop quartets, and bird-callers that his tightfisted budget would allow, let them go on and on, and finally bring out the headliner for as little as 15 minutes. |
|
The shortchanged crowd would then be informed that “Elvis has left the building,” and immediately herded out of the auditorium in a collective daze.
I don’t know whether world champion boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. has even heard of Colonel Tom Parker, and it’s unlikely that he cares one way or the other about Elvis Presley. Still, he rivals Col Parker (note Mayweather's sobriquet TBE) when it comes to uniformly providing the least value for the most money, and the degree of contempt he showed Elvis' diehard fans.
Floyd Mayweather has a veteran matchmakers’ gift for cataloging opponents’ weaknesses. He got it right with Manny Pacquiao (too small, too depleted), Canelo Álvarez (too green, too plodding), and Miguel Cotto (too slow, too banged-up).
For this weekend's number 49, Mayweather had an opponent who made the fight look more exciting and competitive than it actually was in opponent Andre Berto.
So it was that unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. improved to 49-0 with a unanimous-decision victory over former champion Andre Berto (30-4) last night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Mayweather thanked God and the fans for the victory and added that Berto has heart.
"My career's over. It's official," Mayweather said in the ring. "You've got to know when to hang it up."
Mayweather’s time in boxing will have been a singular one. He will have earned significantly more money from it than anyone else in history, perhaps as much as 100 times what the legitimate all-time greats combined brought in. As an earner, he’s TBE.

Elvis, wearing a loud plaid jacket, greeted the audience from a set decorated with stylized guitar shapes. He announced that the show was 'probably the greatest honor I have ever had in my life', and then launched into 'Don't Be Cruel'. - See more at: http://www.elvispresleymusic.com.au/pictures/1956_september_9_ed_sullivan_show.html#sthash.e9vqjWZv.dpuf
59 years since Elvis classic 'The Ed Sullivan Show': It can be argued that September 9, 1956 is the day that rock ‘n’ roll truly established itself as the dominant musical genre in America – and therefore the western world – as its poster boy Elvis Presley made his sensational debut on the country’s most popular TV programme, the Ed Sullivan Show.
Sullivan, a lugubrious former journalist, was initially against the idea of Presley performing on his show, but his mind was changed when the singer made his first national television appearance with rival Steve Allen, immediately boosting Allen’s ratings.
In fact, he had earlier turned down an offer of single appearance by Elvis on the show for $5,000; by the time he realised his mistake Presley was a major star, and his wily manager Colonel Tom Parker was able to negotiate three appearances for $50,000.
As it happened, Sullivan was in hospital recuperating from a car accident on the day of Presley’s debut. It was down to stand-in host Charles Laughton to introduce the young idol, who performed Don't Be Cruel, Love Me Tender, Hound Dog and Ready Teddy.
|
|
Elvis was in LA filming his first movie "Love Me Tender" so was not actually in the New York studio with host Charles Laughton but played to his own fans in the LA studio.
Elvis wore a loud plaid jacket and told the audience the show was "Probably the greatest honor I have ever had in my life".
Contrary to popular belief, this was not the performance in which Presley was only filmed from the waist up. Although to begin the cameras mainly stayed on the top half of his body, he was shown in full-length for his final two songs.
However, it was clear that his movements were causing excited reactions from some of the girls in the studio audience, so during his final number the cameras began to find tighter shots of the singer so as not to disturb the more easily offended members of the viewing public.
The episode was watched by 60 million people, an impressive 82.6% of the evening’s TV audience, but Sullivan was still concerned about the questions of taste surrounding Presley’s hip-swivelling performances.
By the time of his third appearance on the show in January 1957, somebody had decided enough was enough. Elvis performed a total of seven songs – but for each, he was filmed solely from the waist up.

Elvis biographer Peter Guralnick Interview: EPE has begun a new "Gates of Graceland" web series which will explore the many different facets of Elvis' life and career. Not only was Elvis the King of Rock 'n' Roll, he also starred in 33 films, topped the R&B and country charts, won Grammys for his gospel music, served in the U.S. Army and more.
The series will also take a look at Elvis' beloved Graceland, as well as his ongoing legacy and impact on the world.
In the first EPE episode, host Tom Brown interviews Elvis biographer Peter Guralnick about Elvis' time in Las Vegas.
The first interview with Peter Guralnick runs 15 minutes.
In it Guralnick discusses meeting Colonel Parker and getting the "seal of approval".
It focuses on Elvis in Las Vegas and is a little of an EPE sell for their new Westgate exhibition - but it still interesting to hear Guralnick's thoughts.
|
|
Fans sometimes complain that Guralnick is a little "Pro" Colonel Parker and this interview gives you a glimpse in to why that might be.
The interview also features clips of Elvis as well as (possible?) unseen footage of the crowd waiting for Elvis' very first July 31 1969 Vegas show as well as some early photos of Overton Park, Memphis.
Guralnick notes, "Elvis was as great an ethno-musicologist as anyone who has gone through college and got a degree".
Rather oddly Tom Brown talks about the 2015 Elvis show at the Hilton Showroom yet the "Elvis Experience" finished there months ago.

"I'm set to come over to England in the middle of November – I love Christmas in England, the stores go all out with their decorations, they really embrace it.
Once we get going though we will be performing twice daily, the adrenaline and nervous energy get quiet intense on the opening night but I love the process."

Dance world legend Wayne Sleep OBE brings his own choreographic Genie-us to the show as the Genie of the Ring.

Three New FTD Releases for October: FTD have announced three new releases for October. A 1976 Live Soundboard, Movie soundtrack "Classic Album" and a unique collectible double-vinyl release.
1. 'Elvis In West Texas' a new soundboard contains the evening show in Odessa on May 30, 1976.
A thoroughly great show with repertoire highlights in “Help Me Make It Through The Night” and “It’s Now Or Never”.
It is packaged in a digipack 5” format with a 12-page booklet of 1976 photos.
The show features the pretty regular 1976 set-list including an 8 minute 'I Got Woman / Amen' but also highlights 'Funny How Time Slips Away' and ' Help Me Make It Through The Night'. This is the second 1976 show FTD have released from Elvis' MAY/JUNE 1976 tour #18 - as FTD's sixth release back in 2000 was 'Tucson' from June 1, 1976 just two days later. |
|
Recorded at County Coliseum, Odessa, Texas on May 30, 1976, at the evening show. “See See Rider” and the talk about Odessa following it, are from the afternoon show the same day.
A short piece of the introductions was not recorded.
Go here to EIN's FTD/SONY 2015 releases for full tracklist
2. 'Live A Little, Love A Little' new movie soundtrack 'Classic Album' release.
It comes in a 7” digipack with booklet. Due to the fact that there are only four songs in the movie, this is a single disc with selected outtakes.
The tracklist has not yet been finalised but FTD contributor Ken Jensen notes that it will include "newly discovered session tapes." We have no info as yet whether these are just better quality versions - but the rumour is new outtakes have been found! |
|
3. 'Moody Blue', special Double-Vinyl version.
Continuing on from the popular special vinyl editions, FTD is pleased to announce the release of “Moody Blue” in its original discarded art layout for the first time.
To create a unique collectible, it is issued in clear vinyl and each pressing is hand numbered.
This edition is limited to 1500.
This double vinyl edition includes, session outtakes, rough mixes, undubbed versions but for some reason misses out on the full-length version of 'Pledging My Love'.

The Irish Doctor who found out how Elvis really died: A professor from Northern Ireland has been credited with establishing the exact cause of Elvis Presley's death - and finally putting to rest the wild conspiracy theories about how he died.
Stephen Kingsmore's revolutionary DNA-based findings from last year are now being accepted in medical circles as the definitive explanation as to why Elvis passed away aged just 42, and were featured in the UK 'Dead Famous DNA' TV programme.
Dr Kingsmore (54) graduated from Queen's University Belfast with a degree in medicine, surgery and obstetrics in 1985 and is now a renowned geneticist. He analysed a sample of hair from the world's most successful singer which pointed to Presley having suffered from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy - a disease which causes the thickening of the heart and weakening of the heart muscle.
The American superstar Presley displayed many of the symptoms of this disease, including an irregular heartbeat, fatigue, fainting and high blood pressure.
A junk food and prescription pills addict, he died in a bathroom at his Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tennessee and, although it was officially recorded that he had died of heart failure, constant speculation about his demise has continued for nearly 40 years.
Dr Kingsmore told Channel 4's 'Dead Famous DNA' programme that the results indicate it would be unfair to blame the singer's lifestyle for his death.
|
|
He added: "There has been so much speculation about cause of death, and so much ill spoken of his lifestyle, and we had this intriguing finding that possibly Elvis had a medical illness, and all of the stuff about how he killed himself with his lifestyle might have been very unfair."
Although his research on the Presley case has upped his public profile, Dr Kingsmore is already well known in medical circles.
His work as Professor in multiple Departments at the University of Missouri and Director of the Center for Pediatric Genomic Medicine at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas has commanded wide respect within his profession.
Dr Kingsmore was recently named one of Medscape's physicians of the year and has even had his work featured among Time Magazine's top 10 medical breakthroughs of 2012.
"I have a big research team, and part of the time we're doing pure research, trying to discover new stuff," he affirmed.

Elvis Owned 1972 Cadillac Sedan DeVille: As crossovers and SUVs slowly but surely announce the demise of the station wagon, the King of Rock and Roll comes on the scene to remind us that the humble longroof is much cooler than your petty Cadillac SRX or overly-expensive Escalade.
While most of us know what Mr. Presley is all about from his "50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong" compilation album, us gearheads admire Elvis for this infamous quote – "Ambition is a dream with a V8 engine." Truer words have never been spoken.
Also known as the King of Cadillac buyers for the 100+ models he bought during his lifetime, Elvis was all shook up about his iconic pink Fleetwood, the gold El Dorado and the vehicle we'll talk about today – a 1972 Cadillac Sedan DeVille Station Wagon.
In the last years of Elvis' life, the go-to automobile
|

of the King of R'n'R was this longroof here, custom made to suit the artist's taste. Only two were ever made by Caddy, with one of the cars going to Dean Martin then disappearing into the ether. The first thing that strikes us about Elvis' station wagon is represented by the 24k gold spokes and badge. Dear rappers, this is what bling-bling is all about.
Modified to swallow Elvis' friends, luggage and all, Mr. Presley drove this car from Las Vegas to his Graceland mansion in 1977. That was Elvis' last road trip before he died 4 months later. Since that unfortunate event, the Caddy went to the Elvis Presley Museum, and it is still titled to the Museum. However, you can now find it in the parking lot of its original home in Southern Cali.
Care to guess how much the owner wants for this piece of R'n'R history? $1.5 million or trade-ins along the lines of cars like the "Porsche 911 RSR, Mercedes Gullwing, etc.," as well as "precious stones or real estate."

Don't know about you, but for a "poor boy from Memphis" that drove a truck when he got outta high school, Elvis was born under a lucky star. As much as audiophiles admire Elvis' Sun Studio recordings, us petrolheads can't get enough of the cars the King owned and drove during his lifetime.

EPE plans for Entertainment Complex opposite Graceland: EPE is now seeking approval for a 45-acre 'entertainment complex' across the street from Graceland and the 450-room Elvis hotel already under construction.
The $30 million to $35 million project is arriving on the scene earlier than some expected.
The development will include “a car museum showcasing cars owned by Elvis, two restaurants, a soundstage, a retail component, and a museum highlighting and named ‘Elvis the Entertainer’,’’ states a letter accompanying the application to the Office of Planning & Development. Other exhibition space is expected.
The old strip shopping center that EPE converted into Graceland Plaza will be demolished. Replacing the strand of souvenir shops, museum, food courts and other businesses will be a far larger and more modern complex tailored to the fan experience.
The development will expand south into the rolling hills where Craft Manor Apartments once stood. That complex was one of a number of nearby properties EPE has purchased over the years to expand from the mansion's 12 acres to about 120 acres.
EPE already is building The Guest House at Graceland, a 450-room, $75 million resort hotel on the east side of Elvis Presley Boulevard and just north of Graceland.
The most surprising part of the Graceland West application is that it happened so fast, said City Councilman and mayoral candidate Harold Collins.
“It was believed this new project wouldn’t occur for another year and a half or two,’’ said Collins, who represents Whitehaven. “The good news is they secured the financing to move the project forward sooner than expected... We're hopeful this part will be completed when the hotel is completed, which is next October (2016).'' |
|
The site plan shows a curvy drive coming off Elvis Presley Boulevard to a pedestrian plaza. A one-story commercial building stands in the middle of the plaza, which is also surrounded by three or four other one-story commercial buildings.
Landscaping in front includes willow oak, tulip poplar and maple trees, and the Elvis Presley and Craft frontages would be lined with an ornamental metal fence.
Councilman Collins said he knows the name of at least one of the two restaurants planned for the entertainment complex, but said he would let Elvis Presley Enterprises reveal the brands.

EPE Sues Danish 'Graceland Randers': The EPE estate is now seeking 1.5 million kroner (US$225,000) for violating the Graceland trademark from the operator of Graceland Randers. There can only be one Graceland, according to the heirs of Elvis Presley.
The Memphis mansion draws over 600,000 visitors a year. Right "Graceland Randers" - spot the similarity?
"Elvis Unlimited"'s Henrik Knudsen is such a big admirer of the singer that he attempted to recreate the Graceland experience in the heart of Jutland. Knudsen owns and operates Graceland Randers, an ‘event house’ that includes the Elvis Museum, the Highway 51 Diner and an Elvis Shop. Since its opening in 2011, it has grown into one of Denmark’s top 50 tourist attractions.
|
|
But Knudsen’s devotion to The King has ruffled some feathers. EPE has been after Knudsen to drop the Graceland name for years and now its case against him is set for a January showdown in Denmark’s Maritime and Commercial Court. Knudsen, who describes himself as “a professional Elvis fan” said he is surprised by EPE's actions.
“When I got this idea back in 2005, there was a lot of media that wrote about this crazy Dane who had this wacky idea and I head nothing [from EPE]. Then in 2010, we broke the news that we would build a house inspried by Graceland and suddenly got a letter from an attorney. But by then I had already trademarked the name," Knudsen told The Local.
Knudsen contends that EPE had every chance to stop his use of the Graceland name before he had invested so much into the project. He registered the name with the Danish Patent and Trademark Office, where there is a three-month objection period.
"Nobody said anything about it back then. EPE has attorneys in Denmark but nobody reacted. Now they want to do whatever they can to stop me and that's unfair. I did everything official, I did everything the right way. You can’t just come and bully me,” he said.
When the EPE filed a complaint after the objection period expired, the Danish Patent and Trademark Office ruled against Knudsen. Rather than simply changing the name of his business, he appealed to the Maritime and Commercial Court.
Knudsen makes his living through Graceland Randers, where entry to the museum costs 99 kroner for adults and 69 kroner for kids, and where up to 6,000 items of Elvis memorabilia are for sale. But he insists this is not about the money.
“Of course I am running a business, but everything I've done has been with my heart in the right place. I am a die-hard Elvis fan and I was doing this when there was no money involved," Knudsen said.
Claus Barrett Christiansen is a lawyer representing EPE in its case against Graceland Randers.
“We have said from the beginning that Graceland Randers should find a new name […] We think that Graceland Randers has been very arrogant in this case by refusing all suggestions about a solution,” Christiansen added that part of EPE’s case against Knudsen also involves the sale of “false Elvis products”.

For Elvis fans he will be remembered for playing DJ 'Teddy Talbot' in the 1957 Elvis movie “Jailhouse Rock.”
In addition to his appearances in films such as “Under the Yum-Yum Tree,” “The Shaggy D.A.,” “The Million Dollar Duck,” “Snowball Express,” “Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo” and “Beethoven,” Jones also had roles in five Broadway shows and appeared in numerous television series and specials. Elvis UK Official Top 50 biggest selling singles: The UK Official Charts have listed Elvis top-selling singles for 2015 Elvis Week.
They note, "38 years ago August 2015, Elvis Presley tragically died and music lost its King of rock n roll.
But despite his untimely death aged just 42, Elvis remains one of the most celebrated and influential musicians of all time and an icon of the '50s and '60s.
What's more, this month also marks the 50th anniversary of when Elvis met fellow rock n roll titans The Beatles for the first and only time at the former's Bel Air's mansion.
Yesterday BBC Radio 2 revealed each acts Top 50 bestsellers, as compiled by The Official Charts Company.
Topping Elvis’ best-sellers chart is 'It’s Now Or Never' (with the Jordanaires), a song that spent eight weeks at the top in 1960-1961 and returned to the summit again in 2005 for a single week - 28 years after his death. In the UK it was backed by 'Make Me Know It'. To date, the ballad has sold 1.27 million copies in the UK alone."
EIN notes that it is surprise to see 'Suspicious Minds' fail to make the top ten, 'It's Only Love' however makes #17, the 1979 release 'It Won't Seem Like Christmas' makes #40, while 'I Just Can't Help Believing' (a UK number 6) only made #48. |

Sam Phillips New Nashville CMHOF Exhibit Opens: The man who helped launch the careers of Johnny Cash, B.B. King, Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley is being honored by the Country Music Hall of Fame with the special Sam Phillips exhibition opened last weekend.
Co-curated by Presley biographer Peter Guralnick, author of the forthcoming biography Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock and Roll, the exhibition takes an in-depth look at Phillips and the social and cultural impact of the music he captured on such revolutionary recordings as Jackie Brenston’s “Rocket 88,” Elvis Presley’s “That’s All Right,” and Johnny Cash’s “I Walk the Line.”
More than merely creating a sound, Phillips initiated a sensibility. Working in Memphis in the 1950s, he preached the value of self-belief and “individualism in the extreme” to both country and blues performers, encouraging artists not to polish their sound. “I have one real gift,” he told David Halberstam, “and that gift is to look another person in the eye and be able to tell if he has anything to contribute, and if he does, I have the additional gift to free him from whatever is restraining him.”
Sam Phillips’ work is part of the reason Tennessee is known for its music. His Memphis-based Sun Records sought out performers with one-of-a-kind originality and turned them into big stars. |
|
His son, Jerry Phillips, remembers the moment that would change everything.
“I remember when he brought home 'That’s All Right' and he wanted us all to gather around,” Jerry Phillips said. “’I think I’ve really found finally what I’m searching for.’”
Presley recorded the song at Sun Studio. That history is now on display at the hall of fame.
Sam Phillips helped open the door for blues singers like King and Howlin’ Wolf.
“It was a phenomenon among the black community,” Jerry Phillips said. “There’s a white guy that will record you and not charge anything, man. He’s honest and you can trust him.”
Sam Phillips’ discoveries just kept on coming. He wasn’t looking for the perfect performer, but preferred perfectly imperfect.
“He didn’t want to do anything that was like anyone else had already done,” Jerry Phillips said.
“Hey, there I am with Elvis and my brother, I don’t think you can talk about Tennessee music without talking Sam Phillips,”
The exhibit, Flyin’ Saucers, Rock and Roll: The Cosmic Genius of Sam Phillips, is on display through next June.

"A Touch Of Gold Lamé" OUT NOW: Elvis Files "A Touch Of Gold Lamé" is out now and getting great initial reviews. Being in Australia EIN does not have their copy as yet.
However the well-respected Elvis Sessions expert Keith Flynn has commented....
"Not having worked on "A Touch Of Gold Lamé" at all, I have now taken some time to look over the book which I received on Friday, and I have to say this book is the most comprehensive detailing of Elvis' 1957 concerts I have seen, and it amazes me that 58 years after these shows were performed, Erik still manages to find new photographs that have never been seen before, and in such beautiful quality!
I actually found some listings of songs and transcripts of interviews that I hadn’t seen before too, which was another bonus for me.
As always, and as we’ve now come to expect from Erik, the printing is to the highest standards, and the text accompanying the photo’s is second-to-none, although I did find one small typo on the back cover, where ‘outery’ should have read ‘outcry’, but that does not in any way take anything away from the overall presentation of the book.
This to me, is a book I'll look to quite often as a form of reference.
Well done Erik and the gang, for a truly breathtaking look at Elvis in 1957, when he was still in his prime and at the top of his game, before he was tamed by the army years. -10 out of 10!"

Miley Cyrus Wants to Marry Elvis: Miley Cyrus revealed some interesting trivia about herself in a recent Tumblr "Answer Time" interview.
The host of the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards didn't hold back when talking about late rocker Elvis Presley as saying that she wanted to marry him.
Miley made the confession when a Tumblr user asked her, "If you could choose one person to host VMAs with you, who would you choose and why?" The "Wrecking Ball" singer soon answered, "Elvis." She continued adding even more about her admiration for the King of Rock'n'Roll saying that she also wanted to "marry him."
In addition to answering that question, the 22-year-old singer answered things fans might not know before. When asked about what her weirdest dream was, she wrote, "David Bowie taught me how to skateboard but he was shaped like Gumby."

David Briggs, Putt and Jerry Phillips On Elvis: Due to his appearance at Elvis Week David Brigg , Norbert Putnam plus Jerry Phillips recently talked to TimesDaily.com.
Keyboardist David Briggs, a Killen AL native, was originally a member of the first FAME Recording Studios rhythm section.
"Elvis kind of blazed a trail and path so bright, nobody has ever been able to extinguish the flame, he was just one of a kind. He was so generous with his praise".
Briggs spent a week at Graceland, for the Jungle Room sessions.
"We talked, watched TV and played games, I stayed a week and finally said I have to go back to Nashville."
Like Briggs, Putnam said Elvis was a laid-back artist and easy to work for. He said Presley always would make a grand entrance.
Putnam adds, "Elvis always had a big smile on his face. He would come in and hold his arms up and say, ‘Hey gang, you guys ready to do it again?’ " |
|
Instead of getting right to work, Presley liked to tell the musicians stories. "Later on, I’m looking back and I wondered why we didn’t go right to work. The first time he wanted to make sure we were totally relaxed. I don’t want to say he had an aura about him, but he almost had an aura about him. He was the most beautiful man I’d ever seen. His hair was perfectly jet black. I remember being a little disappointed he wasn’t eight feet tall."
"His voice was soft like mine was, like he didn’t want to interrupt anyone over in the corner. He’d have us rolling in the floor. He was so good at this."
Felton Jarvis, the producer, eventually would come out of the control room and coax Presley into starting the session.
"Elvis says, ‘What’s the first song?’ He’s just so relaxed. I think it was to get us relaxed."
Before his days with RCA, Presley recorded his first tracks at Sam Phillips' Sun Recording Studios.
Jerry Phillips (Sam's son) explains how he and his brother, Knox, grew up differently than other people.
"I remember dad bringing home Elvis' record, he wanted us to hear it. It was what he was looking for all along. He was very excited about it."
|
|
Phillips said he has great memories of Presley, dating back to his childhood. He said Presley would visit the Phillips home, but it would be late at night.
"Elvis could never get out until after midnight, or he would absolutely get mobbed. If he stopped at a service station, within 10 minutes there would be a mob. "
He said Presley would drop by their home after midnight, and Phillips’ parents would let him and his brother get up and miss school the next day to spend time with Presley.
"Elvis was a very special person, a very humble individual. At the top of his game, he was the most handsome guy you’d ever seen in your life, the coolest guy you’d ever want to meet."
He said Presley always would have more than one woman with him. Phillips said it was true Presley would address his parents as Mr. and Mrs. Phillips.
"He was one of the biggest influences in my life," Phillips said. "He would come sit around with a guitar in the living room and play music. He was the biggest star in the world, but he was still very polite and humble. I have great memories of Elvis Presley."

'Elvis Meets The Beatles': "It was fifty years ago today"... on August 27, 1965 An EIN spotlight on this famous night in 1965 when the Fab Four finally met the King. In 1965 The Beatles manager Brian Epstein initiated contact with Colonel Parker, and the decision was made that on the night of August 27, the Beatles would come to Elvis’ home for an informal get-together. Intensive security arrangements were worked out, and it was agreed that no press would be involved and no pictures would be taken or recordings made of whatever happened.
"So many things could have gone wrong," says Jerry Schilling, "If Colonel and Brian hadn’t gotten along, it wouldn’t have gotten past the phone-call stage. But there were no ego battles, and from the start it was approached as a pair of music greats coming together out of admiration for each other."
Piers Beagley and Chuck Crisafulli tell the story of this amazing night.

Elvis moves closer to Sinatra's US Top 40 record: Incredibly it is six decades after Elvis' chart debut, and he earns his 53rd top 40 album on the Billboard 200 chart as the new compilation 'Elvis Presley Forever' debuts at No. 11. The set, sold exclusively through the U.S. Postal Service, is Presley's highest-charting album since 2003, when Elvis: 2nd to None peaked at No. 3. The debuting album was released in conjunction with the promotion of Presley's new commemorative stamp.
The new Presley set is sold only as a CD through the Postal Service's website and brick-and-mortar locations, and bows with 27,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Aug. 20, according to Nielsen Music. The entirety of that sum is generated by pure album sales.
Among all acts with the most top 40-charting albums, Presley remains in second place behind Frank Sinatra, with 57. The latter collected his most recent visit to the region with this year's 'Ultimate Sinatra' compilation, which debuted and peaked at No. 32 in May.
With 'Elvis Presley Forever', the King of Rock & Roll also fittingly debuts at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Rock Albums chart. It's his first

No. 1 on the list (which originated in 2006).
'Elvis Presley Forever' also makes a strong debut on the Top Country Albums chart at No. 2, marking Presley's highest-charting set since 2002's Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits, which spent three weeks atop the list. Presley has visited the top two rungs of Top Country Albums 11 times; seven of those sets hit No. 1.

James Burton on Elvis at 80: Elvis Presley would be 80 years old if he was still with us and recently the Cleveland Clarion Ledger paper asked lead guitarist what he imagined would happen if Elvis was still with us.
James Burton, “I can imagine Elvis still being here. And I’ll tell you how I picture him: An incredible gospel singer, and I would say a great gift to the young folks today to bring them to Jesus, to encourage them toward the Christian way. That’s what I think.”
“Elvis would definitely be into the gospel. He loved it so much. His focus would be different than it was when he was running around the stage doing all those karate moves. Being 80 tends to slow you down a little bit.”
Burton, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 by the Rolling Stones' guitarist Keith Richards, smiled and tapped the table where we were seated.
The Mississippi GRAMMY Museum is set to open in November here in Cleveland and it is going to knock people’s socks off.

hundreds of hits by other artists from the 1960s through the 1980s. Bobby Wood was there long with the Holladay Sisters as well as drummer Gene Chrisman who toured for years as Jerry Lee Lewis’ drummer.
Chrisman laid down the beat for the Elvis Memphis Sessions was asked to go on tour with him.
“I turned him down,” said Chrisman, “and I have no regrets about it. I enjoyed recording with him, but his concerts were sometimes as much show as they were music. I don’t mean that in a bad way. But I just wasn’t a ‘show’ kind of person.”
Norbert Putnam was there and then there was Burton.
The last nine years of Elvis’ performing life, he said countless times in the middle of a song: “Play it, James.”
Burton noted, "I still hear it every now and then. And if he were here with us and I could hear him say it one more time, I’d probably give you my new guitar.
I miss that man.”
Elvis called him aside one night before a performance. He put a small chain around Burton’s neck. At the end of it dangled “TCB” and the |

lightning bolt. It was Elvis’ motto, meaning Taking Care of Business.
“I got tired of women coming up and tugging on it. I was afraid they were going to break it,” he said. “Elvis only gave that to a select few people. It meant you were in his inner circle, almost like family.”
Elvis had noticed Burton’s talents in the 1950s when the guitarist became a regular on “The Ozzie and Harriet Show,” which featured teen heartthrob Ricky Nelson. Burton played the guitar licks on Nelson’s hits such as “Hello, Mary Lou” and “Traveling Man.”
“I owe a great deal of gratitude to Ricky’s family for inviting me to live with them while I was in California doing that show,” Burton said. “Elvis told me once that he liked watching me play on there, and I sort of got a kick out of that. The King of rock and roll was watching me on television?”
"Elvis sang ballads so great,” Burton said. “And I enjoyed playing on them because when I hit a sweet note in one, he would turn around and give me that look like, ‘Yep, that’s it.’
“But he closed the show every night with ‘I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You.’ ”
Burton couldn’t help himself. “But, you know, we’d do songs like “Trilogy” and aw, man … ”
He doubled over as if the song had punched him in the gut.
Just as he and his mates in the Band of Legends did to approximately 800 fortunate people Monday night.

'Elvis Presley Forever' CD debuts at Billboard No.11: US Postal Service customers snapped up enough copies of the service’s exclusive new “Elvis Presley Forever” compilation, released last week in conjunction with the new Elvis Presley Forever postage stamp, to put it at No. 11 in its first week on Billboard’s 200 Albums chart.
The 18-track CD, which sold 27,000 copies last week, spans Presley’s career from his 1954 Sun Records recording “That’s All Right” through his early-1970s hits “Burning Love” and “The Wonder of You,” and includes previously unissued versions of “If I Can Dream” and “What Now My Love.”

'Scotty Moore and the Guitar That Changed the World': Part of the BBC radio's August 2015 tribute to Elvis, 'Scotty Moore and the Guitar That Changed the World' was featured last night.
As part of the most amazing musical adventure of modern times Scotty Moore pioneered the role of guitar in pop music with searing solos that inspired and influenced generations of guitar heroes.
To mark the 60th anniversary of the first time that Scotty recorded with Elvis at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis, Chris Isaak - who has been a fan of Elvis's singing and Scotty's playing since he bought his first Sun Records single - journeyed to Memphis to meet Scotty and find out more about the man who has played on more hits than any other guitarist.
Back in the studio where the Elvis legend began, Scotty tells Chris how he and bass payer Bill Black recorded the song 'That's All Right' with Elvis in 1954 and unwittingly sparked a
|
|
revolution that changed music forever. As well as being Elvis's guitarist Scotty was also his first manager and was with Elvis every step of the way as his career flourished. While Elvis's vocal style was a combination of hillbilly howling laced with gospel, Scotty's guitar playing combined jazz, blues and country to create a prototype for all rock guitar that followed.
Scotty's was highly influential both in his style of playing and the fact that he became the first rock 'n' roll lead guitarist. In the 50's artistes like Ike Turner, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and BB King played their own lead guitar parts, but Elvis left lead duties to Scotty, who became an inspiration to countless guitarists that followed.
As The Rolling Stone's Keith Richards explains, "Everyone else wanted to be Elvis, I wanted to be Scotty.".

Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage!
The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
Go here to our detailed 'TIGER MAN' spotlight as EIN's Piers Beagley puts in the hard yards to check the facts from the fantasy .

Marty Lacker comments on the "New" Album: Marty Lacker comments about the recent publicity put out by Priscilla (see news story below) about the new orchestral album.
... I read that story and comments from Priscilla about the new album and once again she tries to make it about her and not Elvis. Ever since she took over Graceland everything is about her and also her presumed statements about "What Elvis always wanted" or "Elvis would have liked this". This time she said, "I was driving down Sunset Boulevard and I heard Mickey Newbury singing it, and I went 'Oh, my God' and made a U-turn and went back to the house", She then said, "No one usually ever brought songs to him.
Elvis picked out all of his songs, with the exception of movie songs which matched the scenes. No one ever said, 'Hey El, you got to do this song.'
This is BULLSHIT as everyone should know.
I brought him songs for one, and Elvis did all then all except one he didn't finish, "We Had It All" because he didn't want her to think he was singing it about and to her after the divorce. It was during the Stax session. He did do two that night that I had
|
|
brought him just as Elvis did in previous sessions. And of course Red West brought him a number of songs that he also did, so did Lamar and of course so did Felton.
How come Priscilla suddenly announces now about bringing Elvis 'American Trilogy'? Mickey Newbury who wrote the song also had Felton Jarvis as his record producer and Mickey Newbury has stated that it was Felton who got the song to Elvis.
Another thing Priscilla said this time was about how Elvis thought he would "love to do the album with the full orchestra". I can tell you that in 20 years that I was close to him I never once heard him say anything like that and if he had wanted to work with a full orchestra RCA would not have stopped him from doing it.
What's she gonna' come up with next? - Marty

Actress Yvonne Craig dies at 78: Yvonne Craig, who appeared with Elvis
in both 'It Happened at the World’s Fair' and 'Kissin Cousins', passed
away at her home in Pacific Palisades August 17, surrounded by her
immediate family. She died from complications brought about from breast
cancer.
Yvonne Craig began her theatrical career as the youngest member of The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and toured for three years when she was accidentally discovered by John Ford’s son Patrick and cast for the lead in the movie The Young Land.
This was quickly followed by many years of film and television including two movies with Elvis Presley 'It Happened at the World’s Fair' and 'Kissin Cousins'. However, she is probably best known for originating the role as Batgirl in the 1966 TV series of Batman, or for her character “Marta” from the third season of Star Trek.
Over a span of years she appeared as a guest star in many TV series, including The Six Million Dollar Man, Land of the Giants, Mod Squad, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and Courtship of Eddie’s Father just to name a few and worked opposite Bing Crosby, Sal Mineo, Don Knotts, George Hamilton, Dwayne Hickman, Dennis Hopper as well as Elvis Presley and James Coburn.
Her next career was that of a real estate broker where she was involved not only in commercial real estate, but also residential income properties for a period of years and still held a real estate license.
In 2000, Ms. Craig wrote a book of anecdotal memoirs, 'From Ballet to the Batcave and Beyond', which covered some of her years in the ballet and her theatrical career.
She actively did voice over work and she was recently Executive Producer for the documentary feature film BIRTH.

Bob Johnston, Producer/ Composer Dies aged 83: Music producer Bob Johnston most famous contribution to Rock'n'Roll history was his work with Bob Dylan’s “Blonde on Blonde” and Johnny Cash’s “At Folsom Prison” although in his early career he composed over a dozen songs for Elvis with his wife Joy Byers, including 'It Hurts Me', 'C'mon Everybody', 'Let Yourself Go' and 'Please Don't Stop Loving Me'.
He is remembered as a maverick who helped bring folk rock to Nashville, Johnston died Friday. He was 83.
Johnston was responsible for Bob Dylan coming to the Music City, and that Dylan’s “Blonde on Blonde” was one of at least three recordings Dylan and Johnston made in Nashville.
From 1956 to 1961 Bob recorded a few rockabilly singles under the name Don Johnston but by 1964 he had moved into production work New York and signed as a songwriter to music publisher Hill and Range. He also married songwriter Joy Byers with whom he began to collaborate. (Right Bob Johnson with Dylan and Johnny Cash) |
|
In later years Bob Johnston claimed that songs still credited to his wife Joy Byers were actually co-written, or solely written by himself, citing "contractual reasons" for this situation. These include at least 16 songs for Elvis Presley's films between 1964 and 1968, including 'It Hurts Me', 'C'mon Everybody', 'Let Yourself Go', 'She's A Machine', 'Please Don't Stop Loving me', 'So Close, Yet So Far', and 'Stop, Look and Listen'.
Johnston grew up in a musical family in Texas and began pursuing a career in music after a stint in the U.S. Navy. In the early 1960s, after a short career as a rockabilly artist, he began writing songs for Elvis Presley movies, and traveling to Nashville to record demos.
He would later get a job at Columbia Records in New York. One of the first recordings he produced there was Patti Page’s “Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte,” which became a Top 10 hit in 1964. Following that success, he began working with Dylan, eventually persuading him to come to Nashville.Johnston also helped revitalize Johnny Cash’s career when he supported Cash’s plan to record a live album inside a prison, something label executives had repeatedly rejected.
“He was a maverick,” Cooper said. “He was the guy who fulfilled Johnny Cash’s vision of recording albums in prisons.”
Johnston also produced multiple stellar albums by Leonard Cohen, Simon and Garfunkel, Flatt & Scruggs, Pete Seeger, Marty Robbins and several other now-legendary artists, all within a 10-year span. His career continued through the 1990s, when he produced albums for Willie Nelson and Carl Perkins, and into the new millennium.

Ginger Alden's Husband Dies August 16th: Elvis' former fiancee Ginger Alden was doubly saddened on August 16, the 38th anniversary of the King of Rock and Roll's death. Alden's husband Ron Leyser died suddenly of what is believed to be a sudden heart attack according to a post from Ginger's sister Rosemary Alden Starkey on Monday evening, August 17. Haunting Ginger Alden for nearly four decades, the death of her great love Elvis Presley still weighs heavily on her mind every year on August 16. Now the tragic day will hold even more painful memories for Ginger.

Please keep Ginger and her son Hunter and The Leyser Family as well as our Family in your thoughts and prayers. I am really at a loss for words as it has been so very traumatic. Thank you all.”
Elvis death was already weighing on Alden's mind, two days before the anniversary Ginger shared a very touching and heartfelt tribute to the late King via Facebook. Ginger wrote,“On the 16th, we will remember and honor a man who changed many lives and for me and my family personally, it was a blessing to get to know him, love him and be a part of his life,” wrote Alden. “We remember many beautiful times, he brought such happiness to so many and although his time here with us was not long, he gave so very much of himself, loved his fans dearly and he would be so happy to see such support and love for him still. May God bless all of you with much peace, love, and new friendships made through Elvis, TLC, Ginger.”

On the final day of Elvis' life, Ginger Alden discovered him unresponsive on his bathroom floor. It was a day that rocked millions of Elvis fan's lives worldwide. As time passed Alden moved on and in 1990 married Leyser, a graduate of Syracuse University Law School.

Never before had so many voices joined in glorious harmony.... There is a universality to grief.
Just as mourners in Milan did back in 1901 as they joined together to sing one of Verdi's signature tunes, so too in August 1977 did people gather from all over the world at the gates of Graceland to mourn over their lost idol.

In a delightful move it was Lisa Marie who set up all the main torches from which fans could light their remembrance candles and stood guard as the "lead flame" for fans to light their candles off hers. It made it a very special start to the procession for hundreds of fans.
The procession continued up the driveway and with the help of Lisa Marie and her "angels" it looked even more beautiful than ever.
As an EPE observer stated, "To actually walk up the driveway and then through the Meditation Garden surrounded by other fans all in quiet remembrance is unlike anything else. The love and passion for Elvis Presley and all he did is contagious and can truly be felt at the Candlelight Vigil."- Go here to Sanja Meegin's 'Elvis Week 2015' for more photos.

Elvis nurse Tish Henley overwhelmed by book response: Elvis' nurse "Tish" Henley Kirk never dreamed it would be like this.
Her book, "Taking Care of Elvis … Memories with Elvis as His Private Nurse and Friend” was released on Monday and the reaction from Elvis fans has been remarkable.
“It’s the most unbelievable experience I’ve had in my 73 years,” she said. “It’s been overwhelming. I’ve had calls from Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Austria, Australia, England and just about every state,” she said.
Tish Henley lived on the grounds at Graceland with her husband and two young daughters from 1972 until 1983, and often traveled with Elvis on tour. The book is a collection of short stories about her life around Elvis and his family and includes dozens of previously unpublished photos.
“Can you believe it. It’s been 38 years since Elvis died, and this country hick girl is getting all this attention. It blows my mind.”
“Talking to these fans has been very heartwarming, many of the conversations are touching and moving. And it’s all very exciting for me.”
She believes Elvis has his hand on the project.
“The spiritual side of me thinks he’s dressed in his white jumpsuit and cape and is looking down on all of this,” she said. “He and I used to sit at the meditation garden at Graceland and watch the clouds. I’d ask him if he could spot the Mickey Mouse ears and other shapes, like we did as kids. It was a relaxing time and had a calming effect.
“So, I’ve been looking at the clouds this week to see if I can pick out Elvis.”
The book will be available on Amazon.com next week.

Graceland Auction Results: With over 40,000 fans in town for Elvis Week celebrating the life and career of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll at Graceland, music fans and collectors in Memphis and around the world participated on site and online in hopes of going home with a piece of Elvis history at the third "Auction at Graceland," which brought over $950,000 yesterday. Presented by Graceland Auctions, the auction was the largest and most comprehensive auction yet held at the Graceland Archive Studio. All of the items in the auction were from third-party collectors and none of the items included in the auction came from the treasured Graceland Archives.
The auction featured 160 rare and unique artifacts expertly authenticated by Graceland Authenticated, including merchandise memorabilia from Elvis’ early career, prized jewelry pieces and movie costumes.
EIN notes that several "Graceland authenticated" items had been |
|
withdrawn before auction (Including the special jumpsuit) from the original number of 174 items up for sale. Some had been flagged as obvious fakes by Elvis experts.
Highlights included...
Elvis Presley's Personal engraved Walther Model Handgun sold for the most at $62,500 (although the estimate had been $100,000)
The "TCB" gold and diamond necklace gifted to Sammy Davis Jr. which sold for $40,000.
The Gold Ring with Diamonds and Tourmaline worn by Elvis and gifted to Linda Thompson sold for $47,500
Elvis’ racquetball shirt which sold for $32,500

Listen to Elvis' Newly Orchestrated 'If I Can Dream': The new SONY compilation will attempt to prove that Elvis Presley was more than just the King of Rock & Roll. The album, If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley With the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, pairs one of the most recognizable voices of the past half-century with classical arrangements that don't so much overtake the original versions that fans hold near and dear as "sweeten them" - says Rolling Stone
The record's first single is "If I Can Dream," the plea for a better world that Presley sang as the closing number of his legendary '68 Comeback Special. In the context of that performance, the song came off as a dramatic showstopper. The updated track, which adds some tasteful strings and a smart horn arrangement that beefs up the one on the original, isn't a different so much as a fuller version of the song. - CLICK HERE TO LISTEN.

Priscilla explains, "This is the album I think he always would have wanted to do. RCA would have never allowed him to have an orchestra. And if it was up to Colonel Parker, he would have had Elvis just singing — no background, no nothing. I think we have given him the freedom here to experiment with all the orchestras he would have loved in the pieces."
When it came to picking the songs for If I Can Dream, Priscilla purposely chose tunes that weren't "the obvious songs," even if it's hard to avoid some of his biggest hits. So alongside "Love Me Tender" and "Burning Love," the new collection features the Aloha From Hawaii standout "Steamroller Blues," the 1962 single "Anything That's Part of You" and the Neil Diamond–penned "And the Grass Won't Pay No Mind." It also features a new guitar line by Duane Eddy on "An American Trilogy," operatic vocals by Il Volo on "It's Now or Never" and Michael Bublé singing half of a feisty duet on "Fever." "One of the main concerns was not having an artist that would compete with Elvis," Priscilla says. "This was thought out. This was not putting his name on something. Michael was so professional and such a perfectionist. Elvis loved great talent and talented people, and I know Michael would have been one of them." |
|
If I Can Dream also features "An American Trilogy," which Priscilla says she brought to Elvis. "I was driving down Sunset Boulevard and I heard Mickey Newbury singing it, and I went 'Oh, my God' and made a U-turn and went back to the house," she says. "No one usually ever brought songs to him. Elvis picked out all of his songs, with the exception of movie songs which matched the scenes. No one ever said, 'Hey El, you got to do this song.' So I said, 'There's a song I think you really should listen to.' And he said, 'Well, put it on.' So I did, and he just sat there at the desk. He put his head down and kind of nodded to it. He closed his eyes and said, 'Damn, damn good song.' And the next thing I know, we're back in Vegas, and he ate it up and spit it out."
The release of the orchestral album, and Priscilla says she's already imagining what she would like to put on a second volume, marks a move by EPE to keep Elvis relevant.
"We have to keep Elvis current. We're just carrying out, really, the DNA of Elvis Presley and keeping him authentic."
(EIN wonders why new orchestral overdubs are actually relevant to today's music scene?)
Priscilla says she has a few ideas of what she wants to do next and that she's looking at If I Can Dream as a tester of sorts. "Our culture and music has changed so drastically, I think that we have to keep [Elvis] right in line and do whatever we can to keep him current".
That authenticity is still what affects Priscilla most when listening to If I Can Dream. "His voice is crystal clear," she says. "I mean it's so today and current that you would never know it was from the Sixties and Seventies. He was a risk taker, and this is a risk he would have taken. I feel it's the right thing to keep his legacy alive and current."
'If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley With the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra' is released October 30th.

Elvis "Non Stop Erotic Cabaret": 45 years ago today Elvis’ performance from the midnight show at the Las Vegas International on August 12, 1970 has been described by his record company as " Probably the best live concert ever recorded by Elvis Presley."
This stunning performance has been released by SONY on last year's "That's The Way It Is' Deluxe box-set as well as the June 2000 BMG 'That’s The Way It Is: Special Edition' 3cd set.
When he decided to investigate in-depth author George Smith discovered however that this 1970 Midnight performance was not just "the best live concert ever recorded by Elvis Presley"; it is an almost spiritual experience. But, like most great albums and concerts of that nature, it cannot be rushed: one must sit and listen to the show in its entirety. Then, and only then, can the genius of Elvis the performer be fully appreciated.
The show takes the form of a metaphorical sexual act with Elvis wooing, loving, and then ravishing his audience before twice taking it to an exhausting musical peak.

Elvis Week Releases for 2015: How would most Elvis Presley fans prefer to commemorate the upcoming 38th anniversary of his death on Aug. 16? Or the fact that the Presley, who was 42 when he died Aug. 16, 1977, in Memphis, would have turned 80 earlier this year?
With a moment of silent contemplation?
By listening to 'Mystery Train', 'Heartbreak Hotel' and other galvanizing early hits by the intensely charismatic singer who shook up an entire generation in the 1950s and helped spark the rock 'n' roll revolution that followed?
By watching 'Blue Hawaii', 'Viva Las Vegas', 'Spinout' or perhaps the exciting seventies LIVE performances of 'That's the Way It Is', 'On Tour' or 'Aloha'?
But 38 years after his death, thanks to the U.S. Postal Service, Sony Records, Tish Henley and "The Elvis Files", fans of "The King Of Rock'n'Roll" will once again have plenty of mouth-watering NEW Elvis releases to choose from.
Next week will see the release of "The Music Icons: Elvis Presley Commemorative Forever Stamp." It bears a black-and-white image of the young rocker in the mid-1950s, when his career was igniting. There will be an official dedication ceremony Wednesday at Graceland..
|
|
Before becoming available to the general public next week, the stamp will go on sale Thursday, following a second dedication ceremony at the Elvis Presley birthplace in Tupelo. This is, for the record, the second collection of U.S. Postal Service stamps honoring Presley. The first collection, issued in 1993, is the best-selling in Postal service history.
As we noted yesterday two new statues of Presley, almost side by side, were unveiled in Tupelo in honor of "The King".
The new book "Taking Care of Elvis … Memories with Elvis as His Private Nurse and Friend", written by "Tish" Henley Kirk, Elvis' in-residence nurse was published yesterday.
Another new book on Presley hitting the shelves this week is "Elvis: Behind The Legend" by Trina Young. It is said to include "startling revelations" about Presley (see below).
The eagerly awaited 'Elvis - A Touch Of Gold Lamé' from the Elvis Files production team is also due out this week. (see details and previews here)
Lastly Sony Legacy will release their major new chart push "If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra" on Oct. 30 but will be heavily promoting it at Elvis week. It features "classic Elvis vocal performances with brand-new orchestral accompaniment," along with a posthumous duet on "Fever" with Michael Bublé, and appearances by rock guitar great Duane Eddy and Italian operatic pop vocal group Il Volo on “It’s Now or Never”. (see details below)

'If I Can Dream' New CD Announcement: Today Legacy Recordings announced the new major Elvis release, 'If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra' for October 30, 2015. The remarkable new album features classic Elvis vocal performances with brand-new orchestral accompaniment, along with a duet with Michael Bublé, and appearances by Il Volo and Duane Eddy.
An exciting revisit of Elvis’ work, If I Can Dream focuses on the iconic artist’s unmistakable voice, emphasizing the pure power of The King of Rock and Roll. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London with acclaimed producers Don Reedman and Nick Patrick, the 14-track album features Elvis’ most dramatic original performances augmented with lush new arrangements by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. “This would be a dream come true for Elvis,” Priscilla Presley says of the project. “He would have loved to play with such a prestigious symphony orchestra. The music…the force that you feel with his voice and the orchestra is exactly what he would have done.” Don Reedman also commented, “Abbey Road Studios and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra are as good as it gets and Elvis deserves as good as it gets.” |
|
The album features a scintillating duet with best-selling jazz-pop singer Michael Bublé on “Fever.” The album also includes additional contributions by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Duane Eddy adding his signature sound to “An American Trilogy” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and Italian operatic pop trio Il Volo lending their outstanding vocals to “It’s Now or Never.”
As producer Nick Patrick said, “This is the record he would have loved to make.” If I Can Dream also highlights Elvis Presley’s diverse musical tastes and appreciation for great vocalists spanning a variety of genres from standards to opera. If I Can Dream is part of the ongoing ELVIS 80th Birthday Celebration in 2015.

July 31 1969 - Such A Night! : It was 46 years ago today, July 31, 1969 which marked a major historic milestone in Elvis' career. Bolstered by the runaway success of the '68 Comeback show and energized by productive recording sessions at American Sound Studios, which would spawn such timeless hits as "Suspicious Minds", "In The Ghetto" and "Don't Cry Daddy," Elvis launched his return to live performance at Las Vegas's International Hotel in the summer of 1969.
As super-fan Ian Fraser-Thomson noted, "The room exploded and a deafening roar came from the crowd and Elvis was bathed in praise and received his first standing ovation. After Elvis traversed both sides of the stage he found his way back to the centre where the microphone stand was situated and I was only 10 feet away from him!
I was amazed with the sight of Elvis reaching out with his right hand to take the mic and utter the first words of the evening and I saw his hand was shaking. Holy smokes, Elvis was trembling!"
Please check out our interview with Ian Fraser-Thomson, the only fan to witness Elvis' astounding July 1969 rehearsal, Las Vegas Opening Night and the Press Conference afterwards (see below).

'Live In Las Vegas' Box set Re-Release: Sony is re-releasing the 2001 original "Live In Las Vegas Box-set" with the original 4 CDs but this time in the new cheaper "mini-book" format.
CD1. Features Elvis' Dinner Show from August 24, 1969.
CD2. Features Elvis' Midnight Show from August 11, 1970.
CD3. Featured the then previously released 'On Stage' / 'Burning Love' Feb 1970 & 1972 compilation.
CD4. Features Elvis' 1956 Las Vegas performance plus 20 soundboard recorded tracks from 1974 and 1975.
Keen Elvis fans will already own the original 2001 box-set so EIN hopes that there is some new publicity to attract more of the "general" Elvis fans.
It is also a shame that this set hasn’t been remastered for 2015.
But priced at £12.99 = US$20 it is a cheap bargain for four live concert cds.
From Sony Music, the release date is 18 Sept. 2015.

Elvis London O2 Exhibition EIN Review: Having visited Graceland several times the lure of being able to see more than 300 of Elvis’ personal belongings in a less tour-group-timed environment was an opportunity not to be missed.
The display is sorted into 10 different rooms focusing on Elvis’ fabulous career from his very early beginnings in Tupelo, to the start of Elvis Mania, his Army Years, Hollywood, the 68 Special, his later concert years and the lovely section dedicated purely to Graceland.
In each room relevant Elvis music helps create the right atmosphere along with various interviews, recording sessions and suchlike.
To be honest I was expecting something a little more tacky but, surprisingly, a lot of thought and attention has been put in to the display and what has been chosen to be exhibited.
Some of the items on display were a delight to linger over.
Go here for EIN's Piers Beagley's look at the London ELVIS O2 exhibition - now open until January 2016!

FTD "What now, What next, What If? PART TWO ": The FTD label has been doing an excellent job at looking at the recording anthology of Elvis Presley and releasing every significant LP or recording session on a 1CD or 2CD ‘Classic Album’ version.
However, as noted with the recent "ELVIS" second LP release and the Christmas album, there are less and less outtakes and studio sessions left in the vaults.
With our new article “What now, What next, What If?” EIN contributor Ian Garfield examines exactly how FTD might present their future 'Classic Album' releases.
This second article covers the possible releases Speedway; Live a Little, Love a Little; Charro, The Trouble with Girls and Change of Habit.
