"Elvis in Concert" Manchester UK Review: The first show of the 2019 UK tour and the Manchester Messenger published a positive review..
.. More than forty years after his death and Elvis Presley can still play to arenas.
This latest incarnation of the show combining original concert footage of the 'The King' and the musicians of the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra accompanying him live had an added bonus.
For joining the orchestra for parts of the show were the original members of the TCB Band who played with Elvis throughout his 1970s tours.
(EIN Note: We were surprised that the TCB Band are only featured for the last parts of the first and second acts. Keen fans note that all the footage looked familiar - no "never before seen" material stuck out - and as always the TTWII footage was the same poor quality it has always been. Why this footage has never been properly remastered for the huge screen beggars belief)
This was a chance to see rock and roll royalty - guitarist James Burton, pianist Glen D Hardin and drummer Ronnie Tutt - on stage together for one more time.
There is something slightly surreal about watching the star of the show on a giant screen.
The whole idea really shouldn't work, but it does. The key is to suspend your scepticism and open your ears.
The problem with Elvis is that his legacy has been tarnished by the sheer number of tribute acts - some excellent, the majority less so.
It is only when you hear that voice through a state-of-the-art PA system that you can fully appreciate just how good he was.
The RPO isn't a bad backing band to have either. It can't be easy playing live to a performer who himself was performing live, albeit up to 50 years ago.
But they rose to the challenge majestically. And they had a blast while they were doing it. As we were treated to a series of early Elvis rock and roll numbers, the string section turned into the Ikettes, dancing away with giant smiles on their faces.
The show featured hit after hit and spanned much of Elvis's career from the early days through to his movies.
Priscilla Presley and lifelong friend Jerry Schilling acted as slightly distracted comperes to the evening, sharing a few anecdotes and offering a glimpse of some of their home movies on the big screens.
But the evening really didn't need any embellishment.
The songs, the musicians and that ELVIS voice had everything you needed.

'First In Line Vol. 2' New Import: Out now 'First In Line Vol.2' from MxF Records focusses on Elvis’ January & February 1974 Vegas season, featuring the midnight show January 30th and the evening show February 8th, 1974, both the shows previously unreleased and from the original AUDIENCE high-quality tape.
Elvis’ tolerance for Vegas has reached its limit in the previous august 1973 season so after the deserved rest of 5 months, Elvis is back in Las Vegas Hilton. The repertoire was reduced compared to the previous season to 15/20 songs with three new additions: Help me, Spanish Eyes and the popular Let Me Be There. The choice of songs in the different shows varied little, but due the 9 days of the distance of the two shows here presented we have some a few variations in the songs, this for sure make more interesting the listen of both the shows.
MxF are happy to be able to associate two great performances with great audio quality. Housed in a deluxe 300 grams single sleeve that includes 150 grams vinyl, the two Bonus CDs and bonus high glossy 130 grams 60x30 cm Poster both sides printed.

James Dean, Not ELVIS to appear in 'Finding Jack'!: Ever since the news broke that the upcoming Vietnam War film "Finding Jack" would utilize CGI technology to digitally bring back James Dean for a starring role, film fans have been voicing their opinions all over social media about the idea of using someone's digital likeness in a new role after their death.
Now we learn that CGI versions of ELVIS and Paul Newman were originally set to join James Dean in the upcoming film.
The movie, based on the Vietnam War, will see a "CGI version" of James Dean in the starring role.
However the Elvis Estate rejected the plan to use CGI version of Elvis as an Army unit leader.
The lead role, a soldier called Fletcher, was also optioned to be CGI "young Paul Newman."
Filmmaker Anton Ernst says, "We don't want this to become a spectacle - more than it already is" and called the huge reactions to the announcement of the CGI James Dean as "nuts, just nuts."
"We searched high and low for the perfect character to
portray the role of Rogan, which has some extreme complex character arcs, and after months of research, we decided on James Dean."
"We feel very honoured that his family supports us and will take every precaution to ensure that his legacy as one of the most epic film stars to date is kept firmly intact. The family views this as his fourth movie, a movie he never got to make. We do not intend to let his fans down."
Since "ELVIS" did actually appear in a small role in 'Blade Runner 2049' (see below) the Elvis estate is obviously not totally opposed to a CGI Elvis appearing in a new film at some point.

It's the same story but the performances have made an incredible upgrade!

Kurt Russell's lip-syncing looks much more natural and real then before, and how cool it is to hear the actual radio broadcast (Dewey Philips) from the time when "That's All Right" was first played on the air, or to hear "The Blackwood Brothers" at the funeral of Elvis his mother Gladys.

'The Guitar Player Worth A Damn' New Venus release: The DVD/CD/Book combo 'The Guitar Player Worth A Damn' "The King In Motion vol. 4" is out now from the reliable Venus label.
Their publicity notes, 'The Best Elvis Movie of All Time' - Elvis' renaissance as a contemporary artist received special recognition in January 1973, when "Elvis On Tour" shared a golden globe "Best Documentary Film" award with another film, "Walls of Fire". A lot of MGM footage went unused in the final edit, and remained unseen for a number of years ... until now!!
Presented here is a qualified revamp of "Elvis On Tour," compiled from hours of unreleased footage. Taken from the best sources available, this professionally-restored movie will astound you for almost 95 minutes.
Also included in this set is a CD of the never-before-released Hampton Roads afternoon show from April 9, 1972, digitally restored from the original ambience tape.
As an additional bonus, we also offer an unreleased alternate mix of the Greensboro performance from April 14, 1972.
The book is filled with scores of unpublished and rare photographs from April 1972.

EIN Notes - To be honest there is very little here that we haven't seen already, after all the bootleg barrel is very empty. However like their previous 1971 combo 'Tearing 'Em Up! 1971' this will no doubt be a well-produced upgrade of what we already have.
The never-before-released Hampton Roads afternoon show is also an AUDIENCE recording so it better be of fine audio quality otherwise it won't be worth playing more than once.
Of course most collectors will have bought the fabulous AMIGA On-Tour Deluxe coffee-table set of similar material so the VENUS April "rare" photos promised here better not be a repeat.
The DVD looks a fine compilation even though everything appears to have been released on previous bootlegs.

Graceland guests all shook up over additions to Elvis Presley's estate: A new $45 million entertainment and exhibit complex showcases Elvis Presley's phenomenal career........

Soon after my evening arrival at the Guest House at Graceland, I lined up with other hotel guests at the peanut butter and jelly station, just off the lobby, which opens for one hour nightly at 10 p.m. Some were dressed casually in shorts, others in comfy white hotel bathrobes over pajamas. And all seemed eager to pay homage to Elvis Presley by making their own free, bedtime version of his favorite sandwich, topped with sliced bananas.
“It’s awesome,” declared Ervin Campbell, 60, of Columbus, Ohio, as he slathered peanut butter on bread. “I’m a huge Elvis fan and visiting Graceland is a bucket list item for me. I’m not sure why we waited as long as we did.”

You don’t have to be a diehard fan of the King of Rock ‘N Roll to enjoy a getaway to Memphis and Graceland, Elvis’ mansion estate that has added multiple new attractions in recent years to broaden its appeal.

From the Guest House at Graceland, a 450-room resort with Priscilla Presley-designed VIP suites and perks like the peanut butter sandwich bar, to Elvis Presley’s Memphis, a new $45 million entertainment and exhibit complex showcasing his phenomenal career, costumes, lifestyle and legacy, there’s much to discover about one of music history’s biggest icons.

Upcoming special events, such as the anniversary of Elvis’ birth, pump up the excitement. Elvis would have turned 85 next Jan. 8 (he died in 1977 at age 42), and Graceland is throwing a birthday bash Jan. 8-11.

The pool at the Guest House, a 450-room resort hotel, is within walking distance of Elvis Presley’s museum-home in Memphis. (Photo: Susan R. Pollack)

Free viewing hours also will be expanded in the Meditation Garden, behind the mansion, where visitors file past the gravesites of Elvis and family members, including his stillborn twin, Jesse Garon. It’s not uncommon to see fans of both sexes cry at the site, which is dotted with floral tributes and stuffed animals.

During my recent introduction to Graceland, I joined several guests eating their PB&J sandwiches in the lobby of the 3-year-old Guest House, under a white, mirrored ceiling inspired by Elvis’ rhinestone-studded capes. We sat in asymmetrical plush chairs that “are designed to look like the collars on Elvis’ jumpsuits,” said Anna Hamilton, the hotel’s night manager, who wears an Elvis wristwatch and leads tours of the $92 million resort.

Live piano music wafted from the Lobby Lounge (try the Blue Suede cocktail), and, just out the door, hotel guests relaxed by the pool or the heart-shaped “Burning Love” firepit.

Boasting up to 600,000 annual visitors, the museum-estate opened in 1982 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006. It’s the second most visited house in America, after the White House.

With interactive iPad tours in nine languages, including Portuguese and Mandarin Chinese, Graceland welcomes throngs of international visitors. The recorded tour, narrated by John Stamos, is interspersed with the voices of Elvis and his daughter, Lisa Marie Presley. Elvis bought the southern Colonial-style mansion in 1957 for $102,500 with proceeds from his first hit, “Heartbreak Hotel.”
My favorite spot in the 23-room time capsule is the white living room with peacock-themed stained-glass windows framing the adjoining music room with its 1950s TV and baby grand piano. Elvis loved the storied Jungle Room with green shag carpeting, indoor flagstone waterfall and Polynesian-style wood furniture reminiscent of Hawaii.

Another head-turner is the billiards room, whose couches, walls and ceiling are done up in more than 350 yards of pleated cotton fabric. The racquetball building recently was restored to its 1977 look and the trophy building has been updated with personal items including family photos, Priscilla’s wedding gown, Lisa’s childhood toys and Elvis’ collection of police badges.

Gold records, jumpsuits and cars are on display at Elvis Presley's Memphis, a new exhibit complex at Graceland. (Photo: Susan R. Pollack)

In the new museum complex visitors can spend hours checking out his pink Cadillac and other cars, motorcycles, ski boats, jumpsuits, gold and platinum records and much more.
I especially enjoyed exhibits about his stint in the U.S. Army in Germany, and “Icons,” highlighting 25 artists he influenced. As John Lennon famously said: “Before Elvis there was nothing. … If there hadn't been Elvis, there wouldn't have been the Beatles."
If you go: The annual Christmas at Graceland celebration gets underway this weekend.

Beyond Elvis: Memphis offers other don’t-miss attractions, including:
- the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968.
- Sun Studio, the legendary “birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” where tour guides detail the story of Sam Phillips’ and stars including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis.
- Beale Street, to hear blues and jazz day and night.
- the Memphis Zoo’s red pandas.
- the Peabody Hotel’s daily duck parade.
- The Arcade, Memphis’ oldest restaurant for sweet potato pancakes, and Central BBQ for slow-smoked pulled pork.

The other Elvis pays tribute to Elvis in Memphis with a special guest in the audience: When Elvis Costello and the Imposters took the stage at Graceland last Saturday night, the irony was palpable. As it should be, given that this other Elvis is a songsmith and wordsmith of subtle twists and turns of phrase. The fact that he's also a dedicated fan and historian of Memphis music only gave the irony a more heartfelt touch. This show was nothing if not soulful.

Indeed, when the lights went down and shadows gathered on the stage, the first sounds we heard were exhortations to give our hearts to Jesus and the ecstatic sounds of a genuine gospel band. Then the lights came up and we saw that was all simply a recording, and the band launched into the thundering tom toms of "Strict Time."

The bandleader's whimsical outfit was just one manifestation of the playfulness he brought to the evening, perhaps inspired by the meta-irony of playing literally in the King's backyard. Dodges, feints, and witty asides were the order of the evening, and such looseness was a perfect foil to some of the thornier content of his back catalog.

As Elvis Costello noted, "I once found myself sitting next to a woman, and I sang this to her..." With that, he launched into the evening's first nod to the King. Singing the chorus and song title plaintively, "Don't...Don't...Don't..." Elvis then abruptly cut off the tune with a curt quip, "So I didn't." Ba-dum-bum!

Later, he revealed that "the woman" was none other than Priscilla Presley, whom he met on a talk show, as he revealed in his generous between-song banter. Other bits of the King's history found their way into the set from then on: "Mystery Dance" gave way to a bit of "His Latest Flame" the coda to "Alison" became a stylized interpolation of "Suspicious Minds" and the old chestnut "What's So Funny 'Bout Peace, Love & Understanding" even had a bit of "Mystery Train" thrown in.
Other gems of Memphis music history were also present: a full-on rendition of Johnny Cash's "Cry, Cry, Cry;" a quote from "Mr. Big Stuff" at the end of "Everyday I Write the Book;" and an especially gospel-drenched treatment of a Sam & Dave tune Costello put his stamp on decades ago, "I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down."

It was a spirited evening, in which Costello's vocal chops only got better and better. Once again, he showed that one can find a perfect balance between punk energy and musical craftsmanship, between history and innovation, between irony and soul.

Elvis’ granddaughter, Riley Keough, to play Rockstar in upcoming Amazon series: Actor, and Elvis Presley's granddaughter, Riley Keough, has another exciting TV opportunity on her plate. After garnering a Golden Globe nomination for her work on Starz's The Girlfriend Experience, she's returning to the small screen to portray Daisy Jones in Amazon's upcoming adaptation of Daisy Jones & The Six, as reported by Deadline. The actor recently acknowledged her latest casting news by telling fans on Instagram, "I’m so honored to be your Daisy."

Keough has made a major name for herself with her many, high-profile roles in various film and television projects. In addition to starring in The Girlfriend Experience, she has also appeared in Logan Lucky, Mad Max: Fury Road, and It Comes At Night. Interestingly enough, Keough has also made a recent appearance on The CW series Riverdale in 2018 after taking to Twitter to write, "I just want to be cast in Riverdale."

Daisy Jones & The Six is a musical drama that follows the fictional band (that has many similarities to Fleetwood Mac) through its ups and downs. Jones is a singer-songwriter who has a tricky relationship with the frontman of The Six, Billy Dunne. The TV series is based on Taylor Jenkins Reid's bestselling book of the same name.

Would Elvis have liked Donald Trump?: Two opposing views were recently published on this question:

Ryan Moore says "Elvis would have been for Trump": President Donald Trump held a ‘Keep America Great’ rally in Tupelo, Mississippi. And I believe Elvis would have been a Trump supporter.

On Nov. 16, 2018, President Trump awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom to music legend Elvis Presley. The Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the United States’ national interests and security, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

Elvis kept his personal political views private. But Elvis loved America, served proudly in the U.S. Army and had great respect for law enforcement. Elvis was also a Christian. In his letter to President Nixon, Elvis said, “I am Elvis Presley and admire you and have great respect for your office” and further added, “I believe that you, Sir, were one of the Top Ten Outstanding Men of America, also.” For me it’s a safe bet that Elvis was a Republican and that he would have supported President Trump and his America-first policies.

Jack Soden, CEO of Elvis Presley Enterprises and Graceland, accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House from President Trump. I find it a little disappointing that the statement on the ‘Graceland: The Home of Elvis Presley’ website did not mention President Trump by name. Even if I am wrong in my supposition that Elvis would have been a Trump supporter, I am certain Elvis would have graciously and specifically thanked President Trump for the honor. I was a young child when Elvis died. I’m not sure if I knew much about Elvis beforehand but I vividly recall when it came on the news that he died. It was also my first experience with death that I can remember.

Growing up in Tupelo in the 1940s in a largely black neighborhood, Elvis saw and heard friends and neighbors performing blues music on their porches. Later in 1948, the family moved to Memphis, and Elvis spent quite a bit of time on Beale Street, which was the heart of the Memphis blues scene. Elvis’ version of “My Babe,” by the great songwriter Willie Dixon, is my favorite Elvis song. Elvis also did outstanding versions of some of the other great blues songs such as “Baby, What You Want Me to Do,” “Reconsider Baby” and “Lawdy, Miss Clawdy.”

I usually consider the songwriter as the most significant contributor to any music but in the case with Elvis Presley, for me, he was the best singer, arranger and producer and chose the best songs. I believe he was the single most important person in 20th century music and probably in the history of music.
RYAN MOORE is a writer, songwriter and social media strategist.
(Opinion, Source: djournal.com)

However, not everyone agrees with Ryan Moore as this post on Quora indicates:
Elvis would be appalled by Donald Trump: Hninzi Lwin, MBBS Pediatrics, Institute of Medicine - says Elvis was a southern gentleman. Extremely polite. He would be appalled by Trump’s crassness and rudeness.
Elvis liked Nixon at first, however, after Watergate, according to his entourage’s memoir, Elvis dismissed him as a crook. So he definitely would not approve of Trump’s shenanigans.
Both Elvis and his dad were not racist. In fact they were so poor they lived around black neighborhoods and grew up with blacks. That’s where he got his sound from.
Elvis cared about poor people. So I would lean towards a "No".
(Opinion, Source: Quora)
And while EIN doesn't agree with its intent some will find this of interest:

Rod Stewart opens up about the connection between his hit song "You're In My Heart"and Elvis: Speaking in a video on his social media channels, Rod discussed You're in My Heart. He said: "There's a sad story attached to You're in My Heart because I wrote that the day Elvis died.

"I was in Canada and we were just laying down the track and it was on the television in the studios. So every time I think of that song when I wrote it Elvis crops up." (News, Source: The Scottish Sun)

Elvis' autopsy and bone cancer: Since Elvis died a recurring claim has been that he had bone cancer at the time of his death. The claim relates to findings from Elvis' (never officially released) autopsy report and the reality of the "bone cancer" issue has evolved through a process of "Chinese whispers".

In his 2010 interview with EIN, Dr. Nick explained about the "bone cancer" issue:

EIN: Many things have been claimed about Elvis’ medical conditions around the time of his death.  A number of people close to him have claimed he said he had bone cancer.   Was this a medical issue for Elvis?

Dr. Nick: The bone cancer theory came from a doctor on the autopsy team, who thought there were signs of bone cancer evident at autopsy. After further tests were performed, and I explain this in my book, it was determined that Elvis did not have bone cancer.

It appears the initial concern Elvis "may have had bone cancer" morphed into "he did have bone cancer" and in 2019 it is evident on various social media that some people still believe he did.

As the above suggests, it is always best to check out primary sources before accepting unsubstantiated 'third party' claims. The interesting thing about so doing is that it can throw up unexpected outcomes as well as explain some of the technical issues.

In his book, Elvis Presley - The Truth Will Prevail, published in 2018, author-researcher Darrin Memmer conducted one-on-one interviews and consulted a range of primary source materials including the Memphis Fire Department's Emergency Unit Incident Report No, 79350 (Aug 16, 1977); Baptist Memorial Hospital Emergency Department Form for Elvis A. Presley on August 16, 1977; and "The Jerry Hopkins Collection" and "Death of Elvis Presley Materials" (Cole and Thompson) held by the University of Memphis.

In his interview with Dan Warlick, Chief Medical Investigator for the State of Tennessee (circa August 1977), this interesting answer arose in relation to the cause of Elvis' death:

What Jerry Francisco said was it was a "cardiac arrhythmia of undetermined cause," which kinda threw Dr. Sexton and Dr. Muirhead a curve [both doctors were part of the Baptist Memorial Hospital autopsy team]. All Jerry said was that his heart stopped: cardiac arryhythmia. but those guys were hospital pathologists. And I have got to tell you, a hospital autopsy in those days would reveal a description of every major disease process but never really, necessarily, told you exactly what the cause of death was.

On the issue of Elvis having experienced earlier heart attacks (another claim some some people believe), Warlick said:

I did not see that. No. But let me explain "why" too. He had a large heart that appeared to be a hyperintensive heart. One that the whole pump is wearing out because it's pushing too much against a lot of vessels that are not dilating and responding properly - that's your hypertension. Coronary artery disease doesn't enlarge the entire heart. Cornonary artery disease causes the area where a particular artery is clogged up, to die and have insufficient flow. That doesn't make that an autopsy. And you can also pick up that in an EKG. So, if he'd had any EKG's, they would have invariably shown a previous myocardial infarction.

But if his heart, straining, ran out of rhythm: the whole thing would have been hypoxic [inadequate supply of blood] or received some damage. But it wouldn't show up like a specific area or a punctate heart attack that we could see at autopsy. If you take a heart and look at it and it's got a white scar or a tough area on the interior wall of the left ventricle, then you know that the left descending coronary artery has been plugged up and caused an infarction. And then that area healed into a scar. This is your heart attack.

But when you see a big ole, 500-gram heart, that doesn't sound like one that's having little punctate areas of dead muscle scarring over. It's just the whole thing wearing out. He had a big ole, what I call "hypertensive heart", that was just kind of sickly looking.

There is also a common misconceoption that Elvis' autopsy report was sealed, at Vernon's request, for 50 years and will become publicly available in August 2027. That is not the case. Under Tennesse law an autopsy ordered by the District Attorney General is a "public autopsy" and is a publicly available record. However, Vernon Presley formally requested Elvis' autopsy, thereby making it a "private autopsy" and as such it forms part of Elvis' health records. Lisa Marie Presley could, at any time, make it public, but this is considered unlikely. In relation to Elvis' autopsy report, it is interesting to note that Vernon asked that a copy not be made available to Dr. Nick.

'ELVIS: The 1972 Press-Conference - The Way It Was and How It Is Today': It is almost 50 years since Elvis held his Madison Square Garden 1972 press conference in the Mercury Ballroom at the New York Hilton.
Elvis is no longer with us but his spirit lives forever. Elvis fans always discover something quite magical when they get the chance to “Walk-a-mile-in-his-shoes” or at least stand in the same rooms and places that Elvis did. Graceland, when not overrun by crowds, feels very special indeed. Standing in the quiet you can almost feel the spirit of Elvis still inhabiting his home. The feeling in Memphis’ Sun Studios can bring fans to tears.
After his 2017 visit to the Las Vegas International / Hilton Hotel, EIN contributor Arjan Deelen recently returned to New York and the Mercury Ballroom, home of Elvis' famous 1972 'M.S.G' press conference.
"The image is one thing, and the human being is another”… a well-known Elvis quote from his press-conference at the Mercury Ballroom in the New York Hilton, on June 9th, 1972. At the time Elvis gave us a brief glimpse of the pressures that he was living under being Elvis, even adding, “It’s very hard to live up to an image, I’ll tell you”.
“First of all, I plead innocent of all charges!”.

'Bravo 'Elvis 85' New CD: German youth magazine Bravo was only a few months old when it first interviewed Elvis when he was almost an unknown in Europe. In February 1957 ELVIS featured BRAVO's front page for the first time and after that everything changed as Elvis stormed the charts in Germany, Britain, Austria and Switzerland. Almost overnight, the handsome rebel with the styled pompadour hairstyle became the idol of a new generation: with an electrifying sound, an incomparable voice and an emphatically provocative hip swing.
Now the still popular BRAVO has scored a first celebrating Elvis' 85th birthday when release their special 3CD box-set on December 13, 2019. It features a mixtures of greatest hits as well as some alternate versions plus a 24-page booklet.
They note... ELVIS IS AN ICON. His records are legendary. Now the King would be 85 - even though he left us in 1977 Elvis remains immortal! This album, a collaboration with BRAVO, celebrates his life and work. A unique compilation of his biggest hits, favorite songs and best cover versions, like My Way or Bridge over troubled Water. Rock n Roll, Country, Blues, Soul, R & B and Gospel Elvis covered all these genres masterfully. He could sing everything with his divine voice. BRAVO ELVIS - Celebrate your youth. --Sony Music
This will surely be a nice collectable - selling for only €18,99.

'Love My Teddy Bear Tender' New Import CD: Live at the International Hotel, Las Vegas, NV, September 3rd, 1971, the AUDIENCE recorded Dinner show. While some of Elvis import labels are just re-releasing repackaged stuff, the E P Collector label is always looking for something new. We now have a number of interesting concerts, which now enables us to release two more surprises.
The first new release is titled 'Love My Teddy Bear Tender' (EPC 2019-22) and it brings us the Las Vegas, September 3rd, 1971 Dinner show. You'll have to forgive us for the somewhat clumsy title, but maybe you'll understand when we tell you that it contains a sensational concert rarity! During this concert, he sings "Love Me Tender" to the tune of "Teddy Bear"!! He only did this once, during this concert, and now for the first time you can hear this amazing discovery!!! Who would think that we would still be getting surprises like this in 2019?!
Elvis concerts from '71 are hard to come by especially unreleased ones. During this season, Elvis was on fire, and his setlist was varied and strong. Near the end of the engagement, his shows were a bit looser, and this one is a real delight. This concert recording is a completely new show. The audio was mastered from an original audience recorded cassette tape. Digipack with a press review and a collection of images taken in Las Vegas, NV, in August / September 1971.

'Knoxville Knockout' New Import CD: Live at the UOT Stokely Arena, Knoxville, TN, April 8, 1972 AUDIENCE recorded Evening show. EP's second new CD is titled 'Knoxville Knockout' (EPC 2019-23).
Just as our first release, the Knoxville, TN, April 8, 1972 8:30 pm evening show is previously unreleased, never before in circulation, in any form! Interestingly enough, RCA was there to record, but their tape recorder malfunctioned.
This concert is taken from a recently discovered original audience recorded cassette tape. Unfortunately, "An American Trilogy" is incomplete, and it is possible that there's is one song missing, just before the "Can't Help Falling In Love" finale.
As we've come to expect from the April '72 shows, Elvis is in excellent form. And what a rare treat to finally get an audience recorded tape from this highly regarded tour! Elvis is firing on all cylinders. He knocks "How Great Thou Art" out of the ballpark. Wow, just wow!!
Packaged in a nicely designed digipack with excerpts from a local press review and a collection of images taken on tour in April, 1972, including a couple of real, very rare Knoxville show shots.

Elvis & Beatles New Liverpool Plaque: A plaque celebrating Elvis' Memphis and The Beatles' Liverpool relationship as musical "Rock ‘n’ Soul Mates" was unveiled last week in Liverpool's Mathew Street.
Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson and Kevin Kane, president of Memphis Tourism, officially unveiled the latest link between the two cities.
An identical plaque is being placed in world-famous Beale Street in Memphis where blues and rock ‘n’ roll were born.
Speaking at a special event at the Cavern Club, Mr Kane said: “There aren’t two cities in the world that had a bigger impact culturally through music than Liverpool and Memphis. We should celebrate that.”
The plaque – donated by Memphis - states that “Liverpool on the banks of the River Mersey and Memphis on the mighty Mississippi River are bound by their definitive music heritage.. The iconic sounds of both cities changed the world and continue to reverberate globally weaving into new and exciting revolutionary music genres even today.”
In 1950 Sam Phillips opened Sun Studio in Union Avenue, Memphis. It was there in 1954 that a teenage Elvis Presley recorded That’s All Right – and rock ‘n’ roll was born.
Four thousand miles away, Presley’s music inspired a certain John Winston Lennon to pick up a guitar (as well as naming his cat Elvis) and what would become The Beatles was born.
Although Elvis and The Beatles met only once – at Presley’s mansion in Bel Air in 1965, both singer and band changed the face of popular music.
Links between Liverpool, a UNESCO City of Music, and Memphis go back to 2004 and the 50th anniversary of That’s All Right. - In 2011 venues in the two cities agreed to become Rock ‘n’ Soul Mates.
Elvis' Graceland home receives over 600,000 visitors per year while Liverpool’s music heritage industry is now believed to be worth around £90m per year to the city. New works are being planned in Liverpool to transform the Mathew Street area to be similar to Memphis' Beale Street in offering visitors a great musical experience.

Priscilla Presley - New All Shook Up restaurant chain: Six degrees of separation refers to the notion that all people are six, or fewer, social connections away from one another. Imagine if only two degrees separated you from someone very famous, in other words, an A-List celebrity is “a friend of a friend.” We experienced this situation in 2009 when a walk-in client told us that she worked extensively with Priscilla Presley.

Lively discussion ensued about the possibility of naming an orchid after Presley, which we followed up with a letter. Little did we know that Elvis Presley had given his future bride 16 purple Cattleyas for her 16th birthday. So, to put it mildly, she was keen on having a namesake orchid, particularly if it was a purple Cattleya. Fast-forward 10 years, and the hybrid, Laeliocattleya Priscilla Presley ‘Beverly Hills,’ has garnered much attention. It was featured in the American Orchid Society magazine, and it regularly gets blue ribbons at spring orchid shows.

Recently we met again at the Sunset Marquis, a legendary rock ‘n’ roll-themed restaurant/hotel in the heart of West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip.
I had brought a fancy orchid arrangement that consisted of three different genera — all purple — a miniature Dendrobium, a reed-stem Epidendrum and a heavily spotted Phalaenopsis. She was fascinated by each orchid, its culture requirements and the duration of the blooms. Her eyes lit up when talking about plants.
Things picked back up when we started discussing her acting role in the hit TV show “Dallas.” She had played Jenna Wade from 1983 to 1988 and thoroughly enjoyed her time, ultimately befriending many of the cast, she said.
Most notably, her business savvy was on full display. She recently helped open a 450-room hotel, The Guest House at Graceland and now she’s launching a national restaurant chain, All Shook Up, where you can bet there will be plenty of vegetarian dishes.

50 Years Ago - 'Change of Habit' becomes Elvis Presley's last film: Elvis Presley was a movie star. This is a fact that often gets lost in our memory of him, but in the 13 years between his first role in 1956's Love Me Tender and his final one in 1969's Change of Habit (opposite: Belgian film poster) he made 31 films, often churning out two or three a year.

This career move coincided with a retreat from performing, organized by his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, and it was at first a smashing success. Because of his legion of fans the movies were virtually always profitable, a rarity in Hollywood. And some of them were even good.

In 1958's King Creole, directed by Michael Curtiz of Casablanca and set in the seedy world of New Orleans nightclubs, the singer shows a good deal of acting skill in a role originally intended for James Dean. Jailhouse Rock, from 1957, highlights his languorous, smoky sexuality, and gave birth one of his most iconic songs.

Even 1964's Viva Las Vegas, in which he plays a race-car driver who takes a job as a waiter to finance his dream of driving in the Las Vegas Grand Prix, and which produced another hit song, still contains some of his youthful dangerous charm. But as the '60s wore on, his movies became more and more formulaic. Over time, the Army veterans and singers and carnival workers and beach bums and pilots and race-car drivers all seemed to blur together into one undifferentiated character, in a mediocre movie, singing songs that were beneath his talent.

By the end of the decade, this parade of schlock had taken its toll. His star was fading, in the musical arena as well as on the screen. It was during this skid that his famed 1968 comeback special arrived, rocketing him back into the limelight. It also signaled the end of his movie career as he refocused on his music; Change of Habit, released in November 1969, would be his last film.

It's a fascinating and at times almost impossibly strange movie, one that perfectly encapsulates the collision between the '50s rock 'n' roll culture that shaped Presley and the new Age of Aquarius world he'd found himself in as he reached his mid-30s.
Presley plays John Carpenter, a doctor who works on Washington Street in a poor black and Hispanic neighborhood. Mary Tyler Moore plays Sister Michelle, one of three nuns who arrive on Washington Street, not wearing their habits, on a secret mission to help the local population. Together, Dr. Carpenter and Sister Michelle start to tackle the neighborhood problems, including underprivileged children, surly teenagers, a local loan shark and the resistance of an older out-of-touch parish priest who disapproves of the nuns' undercover operation.

Slowly, Dr. Carpenter falls in love with this Sister Michelle, not knowing, of course, that she has committed her life to God. And Sister Michelle begins to have some of the same feelings. ... We close in a church, with Dr. Carpenter leading the congregation in a gospel song and Sister Michelle looking back and forth between him and the religious imagery on the walls, trying desperately to come to a decision about what course she will take: God or love?

What no summary can do justice to is the whipsaw effect created by this mixture of rock and roll, religion and social commentary. It features, in no particular order, a black nun (Barbara McNair) being confronted by two Black Panther-types about whether she's being true to the cause or is a race traitor; a pair of elderly women who appear at various points to give comedic commentary on the events; a group of young Latinas who learn a lesson in true femininity from Moore's nun; one of the nuns using her feminine wiles to trick some neighborhood men into moving her furniture and then is almost assaulted by them; a teenager with a terrible speech impediment who is first helped by and then attacks Moore's character; a sit-in, played for laughs, at a butcher shop that charges exorbitant prices; some extended commentary on the question of the amount of reform possible in Catholic doctrine; and a closing musical number which explicitly raises the question of who's better, Elvis or Jesus.

The effect of all this is at turns charming and chaotic. The '60s are in full swing, and the filmmakers can't quite figure out what to do with them, other than to try to throw in every sequence they can dream up to show that they're hip and with it.
But throughout it all, one can't help but be reminded of the charisma and presence of the man around whom the film revolves. As absurd as many of the sequences are, Presley is always somehow both openhearted and mysterious, sexual and noble, the kind of guy one really could imagine saving the less-fortunate and convincing nuns to fall in love with him.
The King was, all the way through to the very end, the King.

'You're Driving Me Crazy' MRS Vinyl Promo: MRS have now released  'You're Driving Me Crazy'  (Anita Wood calls Elvis Presley) a one-sided vinyl 'Promo LP Track' to help advertise their new 6CD/Book combo 'Elvis: Back In Living Stereo'. This is surely one of the strangest Elvis collectable's ever to be released.
It features a 25 minute phone conversation between Anita Wood and Elvis that she recorded in 1961 when she was becoming suspicious of Elvis not being faithful to her.
Worth noting is that because it is a phone conversation recorded in 1961 the audio quality is terrible.
More importantly in this new "Me Too" era Elvis comes off as arrogant, angry and not the charming man all his fans want him to be.
Anita Wood has since stated that she wished she had never made the phone call (see story below) and it is interesting that in the low-tech early 60s she had decided to record the conversation. You can feel that she was setting Elvis up as she keeps on pushing him for better answers to tricky questions.
What Anita Wood hoped to prove (or record) I have no idea.
Most people at some time or another wish they hadn't said such stupid things to their friends / partners and this feels like such a private conversation I doubt if fans would ever want to listen to it more than once.
Whether this private phone conversation should ever have been released is a debatable point. My personal feeling is that it will be sad interruption in the otherwise glorious up-coming MRS box-set of Elvis' early 60s recordings.
However there is no doubt that this vinyl promo release will become a real Elvis collectable.
You can hear more discussion about this new track in the most recent 'Elvis Express' radio show.

With a limited pressing of 1,000 copies, 400 in Clear Vinyl and 600 in Black vinyl this is a treat.

The Anita Wood, Elvis Phone-call: In her "biography" 'Elvis and Anita', written by her daughter, the recorded phone conversation is featured over a few pages. Anita admitted it was a "Fishing exploration" since by that time she had realised that Elvis was being unfaithful with other women. She also wished she had never made the phone call as it did change her feeling for Elvis. It is notable that Anita felt strongly enough at the time to actually record the private conversation. As her daughter explains in the book..
...By now my mother understood that the one certainty about life with Elvis is that there would always be rumors about women, especially when he was on tour or off making a movie. While she never liked hearing these stories, by and large she knew to ignore them. Because no matter how many miles separated them, Elvis always called her — if not every day, then usually every two or three days — and assured her that she was the one.
One time, however, the press seemed to be circulating even more rumors than usual. ... This made Momma believe that, maybe, just maybe, Elvis really was seeing someone "special" this time, and not just for publicity.
Though Momma hated the idea of confronting Elvis, she also knew that this was something she needed to get off her chest. So she picked up the phone and asked him why he hadn't called... it was a fishing exploration, pure and simple.
The conversation went something like this:
"I haven't heard from you in a while," Momma began. "You must be working real hard... or something... Seems that's the only time I do talk to you these days, is when I call!"
Elvis tried to smooth that over with a laugh, but Momma wouldn't have it.
"Well, you know I love you, Anita."
"I don't believe you do," Momma replied. "Don't you miss me?" "Of course, I miss you," Elvis said, "You're my Little Itty-Bitty."
"Well, it sure don't seem like it."
"Well, it may not seem like it to you, Little, but that's the way it is. That's the way it is, and you know it." Then he tried to "baby talk" her, but Momma wouldn't go for that, either.
"Elvis, I am not a baby right now." She came right out and said it. "Do you have a girlfriend out there?"
"Do I have a girlfriend out here?"
"You heard what I said."
"Oh, don't be that way, honey. I've told you a thousand times, I'm crazy about you."
"Well, you're sure not acting like it."
"Anita, can't you take my word for it? If I didn't love you, I wouldn't be wasting my damn time with you. Just because I don't call you three or four times week, don't mean that I don't love you. Don't go crazy on me now — every time I talk to you, you tear my damn head up!"
"That's not true, Elvis, and you know it!"
"Well, then, you ought to know by now how I feel after you, Little. I love you very much, I miss you very much, and if you were with me right now, I'd be perfectly happy!"
When she looks back on it now, my mother wishes that she had never made that call, because she and Elvis ended up arguing with each other for nearly half an hour. But at the same time, her gut kept telling her that something was different, that no matter what he said, he was not being faithful. And it was about time that she stop pretending to herself, and to everyone else, that he was.
Even so, their conversation gives us some insight into Elvis' feelings. I don't believe he was insincere that night when he told Momma that he loved her.

Ed Bonja's Memorial Service: The memorial and reception for Elvis' friend and photographer Ed Bonja was held on November 8, 2019, South Pasadena.
EIN contributor Paul Gansky spoke about their good friend.
"Ed was a dear friend to Joan and I. You may have heard him say he lived in Culver City. He lived with us in our Culver City home for several years before he moved to Germany.
Twice a year or so, he would be invited to Elvis-related events in L.A., Las Vegas, Yuma and other places. When traveling to these places, he would always arrange to stay few extra weeks at our house so that he could visit his family and local friends. Ed was very proud of all of his children, and spoke very highly of them very often.
As we got to know Ed, we encouraged him to make healthier food choices. He resisted with all his might! Vegetables and fruit would NEVER pass his lips! His favorite eatery was Denny’s!
On a typical morning, Ed would meet Artie Dadyan in downtown L.A. for breakfast. (Artie was also known as Party Artie and was famous for making Elvis-style jewelry.) After breakfast, Ed would drive over to Whittier for a visit with another Elvis friend, Sherif Hanna, at Sherif’s auto care center.
On most Sundays, Ed would attend mass at Saint Augustine Church in Culver City. He often sang in their choir, which he enjoyed a lot.
Joan and I love having house guests, especially Elvis fans from faraway places and other countries. A special treat for them would be to meet Ed in our home. He loved sharing his Elvis stories and would sign photos for them.
One of Ed’s favorite stories was about a prank played on Elvis, with Ed mimicking J.D. Sumner’s very deep bass voice. Elvis could not stop laughing for several days!
Ed was invited to many annual Elvis festivals in Europe as a celebrity guest and speaker. He always received a very warm welcome. He traveled to England, Poland, Denmark, Finland, the South Pole and all over Germany.
I’d want to give a special thank you to Ed’s special friend Claudia Engel for helping him in Berlin, and for bringing him home. - We love you Ed, and will always remember you!

'Elvis By Request of Japanese Fans' New Import CD: The publicity notes... Originally released as a 4 LP set in 1980 this set has always been a fan favorite. (EIN, Really??) Not only this is one of the best compiled Elvis releases of all time, but also the cover art drew some attention. Many times referred to as the “tear” cover this set can be found in many serious Elvis collections. It’s a stunning beauty. And now this wonderful box set is available on cd.
Presented in a clamshell box set including the original lp set on 3 cds plus a fantastic bonus cd containing rare or hard to find recordings. The set contains the original tracks as released on the 1980 Japanese lp set. So for the first time you can find some original electronic stereo tracks on cd. A fantastic set full of fan favorites which will be in your player for a long long time.
EIN notes: The bootleg market is scraping the bottom of the barrel to make a buck. This comes from no reputable label and any Elvis collector could surely compile the same tracklist. And in any case the song selection is all over the place with, for instance, 'You Gave Me A Mountain' followed by 'Mary In The Morning', 'Blue Suede Shoes' and 'That’s All Right' (both in "electronic stereo"!) before 'The Wonder Of You', 'Early Morning Rain' and 'All Shook Up'. It truly doesn't play well at all!

Ultimate Classic Rock magazine celebrates Suspicious Minds: Elvis Presley enjoyed his last US No.1 hit when “Suspicious Minds,” released the previous week, reached the top spot on Nov. 1, 1969. It was a massive transformation for the star, who’d endured a period in the doldrums before returning to the big time in 1968.

The song had been written and recorded by Mark James in 1968. Certain it would be a hit, he and his record label had thrown everything they could at it, but they lacked the scale to secure the required sales. Producer Chips Moman had retained a high regard for the song, however – it was said the label had given him a Rolls-Royce for his work on it – and his regard was to pay dividends.

Mark James noted, “Late one night, fooling around on my Fender guitar and using my Hammond organ pedals for a bass line, I came up with a catchy melody. I was married to my first wife then but still had feelings for my childhood sweetheart, who was married back in Houston. My wife suspected I had those feelings, so it was a confusing time for me. I felt as though all three of us were all caught in this trap that we couldn't walk out of.”

James had relocated to Memphis to become a house writer for Moman at American Sound Studio. When the producer told him that Presley wanted to work there – specifically so he could harness the country music power of house band the Memphis Boys – Moman also asked him to come up with songs for the King to consider. However, James was struggling for ideas. “We went to about two days before,” he recalled. “I was down, man, because I still hadn't come up with anything.”

Then he thought of “Suspicious Minds.” “It was like seeing a golden number one and I knew that was the song I'd been looking for,” he said. “I knew most of the guys with Elvis, some of them working there, around Memphis – I felt like telling George Klein, Marty Lacker, I felt like even shaking Elvis and saying, ‘This is a great one for you, man, to record.’ But I knew probably everyone in the world had probably said that to him. So all I could do is tell all the guys around him, ‘Get him to cut this, this is a great one for him!’” James wasn’t in the room when Presley first heard the song – and immediately asked to hear it again. Moman recalled that he took to it so quickly that he’d already learned it by the time he left for home with a tape under his arm.

Recording began at 4AM on Jan. 23, 1969, and eight takes were recorded over three hours before Presley added his vocal track. Once again, James wasn’t present, having attended a previous session and felt as if it made Presley uncomfortable. “I went to the studio one time,” the writer recalled. “I went upstairs and I heard they were taking a break. … And I went in there and he happened to be leaning up against the baffle. … I said, 'Hey Elvis, I heard you might cut 'Suspicious Minds.'' And he said, 'Hey Mark, been thinking about it' – you know, just like Elvis would say it.” (News, Source: Ultimate Classic Rock)

Finnish Elvis Fan Club releases Livre de Coloriage Elvis Pour Les Enfants et les adultees aussi! / The Elvis Coloring Book for Kids and Grown-Ups Too!: Following on from their previous successful book releases, Sun Singlet (Sun Singles) and The Elvis Map, the busy Official Elvis Presley Fan Club of Finland has released its latest book targeted principally (but not exclusively) at a young audience.

EIN's Nigel Patterson rediscovered his inner child and dusted off his aging crayons for a colorful journey around Elvis' Memphis. The book has been published with English, French, German and Finnish editions.

With contributions to the book (which has been released in English, French and Finnish editions) from people who knew Elvis including Tish Henley, Cynthia Pepper, the Smith family and Bill Morris, what Nigel found was that while his artistic skills are still not up to scratch there was still plenty to enjoy and learn while coloring his way across Elvis' Memphis. Conversations With The King released in softcover and ebook formats: In 2011, David Stanley, Elvis' youngest step-brother, released Conversations With The King Journals of a Young Apprentice as a hardcover (with dust jacket) edition. The book has now been released in softcover and Kindle formats with an amended sub-title: The Enduring Spiritual Legacy of Elvis Presley. It is co-written by Dr. David Gruder.

The book is thematically different to most other books about Elvis and provides an intriguing perspective on Elvis’ spiritual side (his search for meaning) and its legacy for others in a world where many people are seeking spiritual development. Based on a platform of self-development, the authors discuss themes such as authenticity and inauthenticity, while each chapter includes important Questions to Ponder. (News, Source: Amazon)

Why might The Beatles seem a bit disappointed when they met their hero Elvis? Did Elvis perceive The Beatles as a threat to his kingdom?: The Quora site recently posted this topic written by Harold Philip Benson, (former Keyboard, Classically Trained - 1983-2016). Benson wrote:

The Beatles were very excited as they drove over to Elvis’s house in L.A., laughing and talking in the car. They were impressed by the big house and living room with the huge television. They were also amazed that 10 helpers lived there also, with their wives (Elvis’ ‘mafia’). But, after everyone sat down, the meeting started slowly. The Beatles and Elvis sitting, all the Beatles afraid to talk first, and Elvis kind of shy and just sitting there. Elvis felt a little awkward, but he felt mostly shy. Elvis showed he felt a bit shy and awkward when he suddenly broke the silence by quietly saying, “If you’re gonna’ just sit there, I’ll go to bed”. (It was a bit after 11 PM.)

So John nervously and quickly shot out a bunch of questions to Elvis, like why does he do those movie ballads and what happened to good ol’ rock n’ roll. That got the ball rolling a bit.

The Beatles and Elvis next swapped some stories, but the atmosphere was not yet relaxed. Elvis asked for guitars and they had a brief jam session with him that included “I Feel Fine” and a Cilla Black song.

Elvis had been playing a bass guitar when the Beatles arrived, so he played bass during the jam. Things eased up during the jam and when Paul and Elvis talked about blues and playing bass. After that, they discussed their respective fans, tours and movies. They all played a few games of pool also. They thought Elvis was shy and quiet…which he was. The meeting lasted about three hours.

In all, the Beatles thought it was great and exciting. John, however, felt it a bit more boring than he’d hoped. They did NOT feel antagonism. All but John did NOT feel particularly disappointed. I think they, as big fans of Elvis like anyone else, expected a dynamic, outgoing, animated guy in Elvis who would lead the way and show them a great time. But Elvis was real: Shy. Elvis did not act like he was defensive or threatened, although at the start of the meeting he seems to have betrayed a bit of this.

PAUL: “It was one of the great meetings of my life. I think he liked us.” (News, Source: Quora.com)

Elvis is Back! once again #2 Top-Earning Dead Celebrity: Last year ELVIS once again jumped back up the Forbes charts to become #2 Top-Earning Dead Celebrity and this year he retained that same position earning a cool $39 million - helped no doubt by the expanded Elvis Presley's Memphis museum and interest surrounding the 1969 '50th Anniversary'.
In 2019 Michael Jackson again tops Forbes magazine's annual list of the highest-earning deceased celebrities but with an estimated of $60 million income - this is a MASSIVE DROP from his income last year of $400 million.
Golf legend Arnold Palmer drops to No.4 with $30 million while "Peanuts" cartoonist Charles Schulz is back to No.3 with a $38 million.
As last year, rounding out the top five is reggae icon Bob Marley ($20 million).
Even with CD sales collapsing nine musicians feature in the list of 13, up from just six a year ago. John Lennon is the richer late Beatle at #7 on the list with $14 million (much of it owed to the 50th anniversary of Abbey Road) while George Harrison is 13th on the list, with $9 million.
Other musicians included are Prince #9 ($12M), Rapper Nipsey Hussle (who was shot in Los Angeles) comes in at 10 with $11 million, XXXTentacion, who died in June 2018, is 11 on the list having made $10 million since his death. He is most-streamed deceased celebrity in America.
Whitney Houston is #12 ($9.5M). The great Marilyn Monroe is #8 ($13M) while children’s author Dr. Seuss is #6 ($19M)

Top Ten Forbes magazine Top-Earning Dead Celebrities 2019.
1. Michael Jackson $60 million (down from $400m!)
2. Elvis Presley $39 million (down from $40m)
3. Charles Schulz ('Peanuts' creator) $38 million.
4. Arnold Palmer $30 million.
5. Bob Marley $20 million.
Also - 6. Dr. Seuss $19 million, 7. John Lennon $14 million, 8. Marilyn Monroe $13 million, 9. Prince $12 million, 10. Nipsey Hussle $10 million.

As Gore Vidal once noted, "Death is a good career move"!

Elvis left the building 42 years ago - will Michael Jackson still be in the list in 30 years' time? - EIN truly has its doubts.

Luhrmann finds his Priscilla for Elvis Biopic: Director Baz Luhrmann has found the Priscilla to his Elvis for his new biopic in 'The Society' actress Olivia DeJonge.
Australian DeJonge, who also starred in M. Night Shyamalan's 2015 thriller The Visit and Netflix series “The Society” will portray Priscilla Presley in Luhrmann's untitled movie that will follow a 20-year period of Elvis Presley's life as he hit stratospheric levels of fame and success.
“Olivia is capable of manifesting the complex depth and presence that has made Priscilla Presley an icon in her own right. She’s an extremely talented young actor and the perfect counterpoint to Austin Butler's Elvis,” Luhrmann said in a statement.

Butler beat out the likes of Ansel Elgort and Harry Styles to play the King of Rock 'n' Roll in the film that will examine the musician's life through his relationship with his manager Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks.
Principal photography will begin early next year in Queensland, Australia.
Luhrmann co-wrote the screenplay for his film alongside Craig Pearce.

Jason Momoa dresses up as Elvis on Ellen: Aquaman's Jason Momoa channeled Elvis himself on the Halloween episode of the Ellen show. Momoa appeared in a light pink bedazzled bell bottom jumpsuit with a cape along with a pair of sunglasses, a black wig and a red lei. He made his entrance at the top of the audience staircase, proudly displaying the cape's design before making his way through the crowd and onto the stage, though not before getting a little dancing in to one of the King's hits.
The 40 year old Aquaman star walked out through the crowd in an epic pink Elvis jumpsuit, even giving a costumed fan a lei. He even mimiced Presley's iconic, 'Thank you, thank you very much,' while admitting to Ellen that he's 'obsessed' with The King of Rock and Roll.
Momoa noted, 'I am obsessed with Elvis, my momma raised me on him and I was so obsessed I bought a bike like him and I got an old '55 Cadillac.
When asked if he has dressed like The King before, he admitted that he dressed up like Elvis on Halloween in his youth.
'Actually, I did it on Halloween when I was 19, and that was my first time in Los Angeles. I was working on a little show called... Baywatch,' Momoa said. 'So a 19 year old Jason showed up as a young Elvis and this is my second time playing Elvis. Halloween is good to me,' he said.
EIN notes that if Jason Momoa can interest Aquaman's $1-billion-box-office-audience in ELVIS that has got to be a very good thing.

Lisa Marie and Riley in 1994: Looking very much like a photo of Priscilla pushing Lisa Marie in a pram, this photo posted this week by Riley Keough, is in fact an old shot of herself with her mother Lisa Marie. The photo is from 1994 and shows Lisa Marie pushing her daughter, who was around 5 years old at the time, in a stroller.
Lisa Marie's twins Finely and Harper also celebrated their birthdays on October 7th with the girls turning 11.
Grandma "Nona" Priscilla posted "HAPPY BIRTHDAY Harper and Finley. I love you, NONA,"
Priscilla recently gushed about the twins while speaking with Us Weekly ahead of Graceland’s first annual Elegant Southern Style Weekend.
"I can’t believe they are so smart with technology, they can handle the phone better than I can. They know how to Google already, they know how to draw things and characters, and oh, my gosh. They’re just little girls experiencing life and having fun."
Priscilla added that the girls are aware of their grandfather's fame to a certain extent at their young age, though they play it cool when they hear their famous relative's songs in public.
Priscilla said, "If they hear an Elvis song in a store, they’re very, um, demure about it. They they will look at each other and look at us with little smiles. So they’re very respectful."

Did you know Elvis briefly dated a pro-wrestling women's world champion?: Believe it or not, but prior to his Army stint Elvis dated Penny Banner, who in the 1960s became the first American Wrestling Association (AWA) Women's World Wrestling Champion. In her entertaining autobiography, Banner Days (published in 2004), Ms Banner details her "dates" with Elvis. Her account is both respectful and insightful, confirming a number of characteristics of Elvis' personality, his "kissing" ability, and his unusual attitude to sex.

Australia's Parkes Elvis Festival named as a finalist in 2019 Grey Nomad Awards: The Parkes Elvis Festival has been named a finalist in the 2019 Grey Nomad Awards, helping cement the town’s reputation as a top destination for mature age tourists with a penchant for rock’n’roll.

The Festival has been shortlisted in the ‘Best Grey Nomad Festival or Event’ category. Parkes Elvis Festival is the largest celebration of Elvis' life in the Southern Hemisphere, encompassing more than 200 events across five days.

Grey nomads made happy by crooning rebirthed Elvis songs were even cheerier upon learning that 80% of events were free to attend. The typical Festival visitor is a mature traveller over 50 who stays in a caravan or RV, with one in every three visitors over the age of 65.

Festival Director Cathy Treasure explains “we are beyond thrilled to be nominated for a Grey Nomad Award. Parkes Elvis Festival has been a cultural touchstone of regional NSW for over 25 years and this is largely thanks to the unbridled support of travellers over 50.

The Awards were judged by mature-age tourism professionals, some of whom have experienced the grey nomad lifestyle and attended the Festival personally, adding weight to the Parkes Elvis Festival’s success as a finalist.
The judges congratulated the Parkes Shire Council on catering so well to grey nomad festival goers, saying “we love that the town found a unique way to attract visitors when much of Australia is focussed on seaside holidays. As children of the 50s and 60s, grey nomads love Elvis and we can see why a favoured activity this year was participating in the love-filled Elvis Renewal of Vows ceremony.”
The judges added “festivals like the Parkes Elvis Festival encourage people over 55 to see, learn about and enjoy the many facets of Australia, and therefore make a valuable tourism contribution well beyond what is initially recognised.”
Grey nomads are a huge, still largely untapped segment that represent one of the biggest opportunities in domestic tourism. This age segment possesses 32% of Australia's disposable income and love learning about the country. Importantly, they are fiercely loyal. Once they discover something they like, they will return.
The Awards dinner is being held on the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday 6th November, immediately following The Art of Attraction Tourism summit which will feature guest-speaker Festival director Cathy Treasure. The summit marks the first national event to explore two fast-growing 21st century tourism segments - senior travel and arts tourism.

'The Blue Hawaii Sessions' FTD confirmed: FTD's Ernst Jørgensen has confirmed with EIN that the expanded deluxe FTD release of 'The Blue Hawaii Sessions' is already being worked on.
Jørgensen notes that FTD do not like to announce future releases anymore since this only makes bootleggers rush in to bang-out poorer quality copy-cat product.
"We are normally working on a handful of these projects simultaneously" he adds.

EIN notes that with all the on-going debate about the recent "Venus" (really?) issue of their 'Mele Mai Ka Lani Mai' 'Blue-Hawaii sessions' (without the advertised "Top-Notch" sound!) it is good to know that fans of quality session releases can wait for the FTD version.

In this circumstance, where the bootleg is already out, EIN thinks it is a real positive that FTD let fans know their sessions product will be released in the near-future.

Woody Harrelson‘s as Elvis in new movie 'Zombieland: Double Tap': Actor Woody Harrelson has always said that he is a BIG fan of Elvis, and now he gets the chance to play his idol in the new movie 'Zombieland: Double Tap'.
The movie also features Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg and Luke Wilson.
In previous interviews Woody Harrelson has always stated that performing his impersonation of Elvis for his high-school football team (he still does a mean "All Shook Up") was what led him in to acting. Performing Elvis for the first time in front of a crowd everyone started clapping and gathering all round him as he then jumped on the library table dancing. Afterwards the Drama club scout sort Harrelson out to telling him that he must start with her theatre group.
Yes, his love of Elvis helped make Woody Harrelson the star he is today.
In this next Zombieland installment the zombie slayers must face off against many new kinds of
zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. Also new to the cast are Zoey Deutch, Avan Jogia and Rosario Dawson.

"She Is The King" - 'I've Got A Thing About You Baby' Video: One of Elvis’ most underrated singles is I’ve Got A Thing About You Baby (1974). Written by legendary “swamp rocker”, Tony Joe White it only peaked at #39 on Billboard's Top 100 Chart and #4 on it's Top Country Chart.

In 2019, Jacqueline Feilich (aka She Is The King) has recorded the song as her latest single. With a resonant, deep assured vocal and lively country beat, Jac’s recording is a strong one, true to Elvis’ interpretation....... and one which has the potential to bring the song to a new audience. As she notes, "As with everything I do, I try to give much needed light to Elvis’ more obscure tracks as I’ve always believed they were majorly underrated and deserved another shot in the ears of today’s young people."

'Mele Mai Ka Lani Mai' 3-CD set Buyers Beware: EIN has received a review from a regular VENUS purchaser who feels that he has wasted his money on the recent rush-released Blue Hawaii 'Complete Sessions' set.
He writes.. "I would like to warn the fans, that the new 'Mele Mai Ka Lani Mai' 3-CD is a complete rip off. The songs have been taken from already released mono and stereo bootleg CDs, mixed with the original FTD releases. It has been edited very poorly and the sound changes all the time between very dull bootleg sound with strong noise filter and the original FTD sound. The sound is certainly NOT 'Top-Notch'! It is hardly any fun to listen to it.
I cannot even believe, that the people of Venus are behind this release.
To be honest only the Logo looks like Venus, but Venus have never delivered such a poor quality release before, so is it really a Venus product? I really don’t know.
It comes in a simple digipack for 3 CDs, no booklet, no further notes. Usually Venus is famous at least for their outstanding sound.
These CDs are just a mess in terms of sound, I’m really disappointed. Also nothing new in terms of content – everything has been released before, either on Bootleg in better quality (!) (Laurel/TCB) or on FTD.
Yes, FTD will surely release a “Blue Hawaii Session” in the future, so usually there is no need to buy the Venus set anyway.
But maybe collectors are Venus fans like myself, and have all the old Venus stuff and so would be interested in the new release.
I just would like to say to them, forget this one, and save your money." - Michael

NOTE - EIN being in Australia has not seen or heard this release as yet - but the whole product sounded suspicious to us and purely a money-grabbing release.
PLEASE, if you own 'Mele Mai Ka Lani Mai' and think it was well-worth buying then please send us your review
EIN thanks Michael for such a fast and informative review

Elvis Presley returns to big screens across the globe this fall with the new music special, "Elvis Unleashed" featuring previously unseen footage on movie theater screens of Elvis as he filmed the iconic "68 Comeback Special." The two-day cinema event, which includes outtakes and performances that reveal a new side of the King.
"Elvis Unleashed" captures the spontaneous moments and stories behind the legendary special, and sheds new light on Elvis as a cultural icon. Each screening will include a new 30-minute segment with LA writer Randy Lewis in conversation with actor Dennis Quaid, rising pop/country artist Jade Jackson and the esteemed director of the "68 Elvis Comeback Special," Steve Binder, to discuss Elvis's life and legacy.

But does the cinema-event really live up to all the publicity, is there really anything new to enjoy? The answer is that, "the material is amazing and essential viewing, you can tell that Elvis knew that a lot was at stake – he simply works his ass off".
While the US and Australia screenings were cancelled EIN contributor ARJAN DEELEN saw this movie-event in Copenhagen last night - and kindly sent us his on-the-spot review... he notes, "All fans deserve to see this footage"..

Revealing Colonel Tom Parker's Dutch heritage: Even after Elvis' death it was some time before most fans became aware that the Colonel was actually an illegal Dutch immigrant named Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk.

In fact, the Colonel's Dutch beginnings were revealed by Dutch author/researcher, Hans Langbroek, who, in 1970, seven years before Elvis' death, published a neat 64 page book, The Hillbilly Cat (reprinted in 1981). In a chapter titled the great snowman - thomas andrew parker, the author noted: ... something more like the truth would have been: born june 26th, 1909, in breda, holland. Christened Andre Van Kuyk, moved to england in 1929, and, after a few months, moved from there to the west indies, and finally moved to the united states. worked there as a dog-catcher alright, and hot-dog seller and even with a travelling circus, finally he joined the us army in 1931 and left again in 1936, with an injured back and a small pension. after he left the army he wrote home for the last time, told them he had now changed his name to thomas andrew parker and started to sell the cure-everything medicine......

EIN Comments: Even that it was a pre-Internet era, it is surprising that when Elvis broke globally, none of the "Colonel's" Dutch family sold the story to the media for it to be picked up in America and Europe. Albert Goldman in his "hatchet-job" biography Elvis (published 1981) suggests the "Colonel's" family did not know what had happened to him - this may be closer to what actually happened than as suggested by Langbroek.

To add to Langbroek's story, the "Colonel" came to America on a freighter which landed in Florida. During his US Army stint he was stationed at a base in Hawaii and he apparently claimed he was born in West Virginia. His honorary title of "Colonel" was bestowed on him by Louisiana Governor, Jimmie Davis (a former country music singer for whom the "Colonel" had done promotional work).

‘Elvis Through the Ages' Book Review: The publicity for ‘Elvis Through the Ages: Images from the Hollywood Photo Archive’ stated..  "From the beginning of his career to his death as the Hollywood icon Elvis Presley sang and enchanted thousands of people. Publicity photos and behind-the-scenes shots from the Hollywood Photo Archives include scores of long been forgotten or abandoned images in neglected studio archives. This book collects 100 of the rarest of the rare, seldom previously seen images of his career. For the Elvis fans who think that they have seen it all, this book will provide a new lens on a beloved American icon.

EIN's Piers Beagley felt tempted by the offer of "100 of the rarest of the rare hollywood images" but now feels a fool for buying such a terrible collection of generic photos and a book full of so many UNFORGIVEABLE mistakes.. The publishers should be ashamed..
With an Elvis IMITATOR on the cover, as well as in the book, EIN readers should not get themselves "caught in this trap".. Please read this review before purchasing.

(PS - Do you love the Elvis and Ann-Margret photos on the front cover, well guess what, they are not in the book!)

Unseen ELVIS footage: EIN's US contributors Joan & Paul Gansky recently reported that they had seen previously unknown Elvis home-video footage featured in the new PBS series Ken Burns series "Country Music". "Explore the remarkable stories of the people and places behind a true American art form." (click here to PBS for info)
This week's episode was 'I Can't Stop Loving You (1953-1963)'
A visit to Memphis, Tenn., during the age of rockabilly with Sun Studios artists Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley; Ray Charles crosses over racial borders by recording a country album; Patsy Cline rises to stardom with a smooth new sound.
The show included some stunning unseen home movie footage of Elvis and Johnny Cash together in 1957.
Our friend's at Elvis Express Radio note.
"This awesome previously unseen home movie footage which shows Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash together back in 1957. How much more footage was filmed at this time is yet to be known.
The footage in the show so far gives us a mouth watering look at what else is waiting for fans out there, still waiting to be seen and heard by Elvis fans around the World.
In the promo trailer, we were treated to a split second of a never before seen piece of film footage of Elvis in colour from 1957. Now that the 8 part, 16 hour series has started we got a little more to wet our thirst for all things Elvis with more from that unseen film reel running 40 seconds and we see that cool Elvis giving a little rockin moves and generally looking damn cool.
Then we get some footage of Johnny Cash walking along a street and then in the back of a car with a cigarette. The footage stays with Johnny, and this time his with Elvis and the two legends look like they are listening to records together. Oh my word how I wish there was sound.
We can only hope that we get to see even more footage from this unseen film reel in the remaining episode.

Elvis and Bigtop Records - the time Elvis could have left RCA and co-owned his own record company: This is the obscure but true account of how Bigtop Records had discussions with Colonel Parker, to lure Elvis away from RCA.

While Bigtop Records is a little known label from the late 1950s-1960s it almost became, not only Elvis’ "recording" home, but also would have been part-owned by the King!

Sept 4 - Ed Bonja Photographer / Tour Manager has died: EIN has heard the sad news that Elvis' photographer Ed Bonja died in Berlin last night, aged 74. EIN's good friends Joan & Paul Gansky noted..

... Our dear friend and Elvis Photographer/tour manager Ed Bonja has joined Elvis and so many of his friends, co-stars, musicians, backup singers and others in Heaven. Leukemia and other medical complications brought his life to a close on September 4th, 2019. He was 74. Rest in peace Ed, our special friend.

Ed lived in Germany, most recently in Berlin, for the last 12 years of his life, participating in hundreds of shows at Hotel Estrella with Elvis-connected entertainers and friends. He also was a guest celebrity at many Elvis-events all over Europe and the USA.
Previously, he had called our house in Culver City “home” for several years. Whenever Ed visited the USA, he had his old “Bonja Suite” reserved in our home!
Our precious memories are too numerous to mention here, but we will always remember him as a gentle soul who went through life seeing good in everyone that crossed his path. - Paul & Joan Gansky

EIN Comment: Ed's passing is another sad day for Elvis fans. His photos were among the best taken of Elvis. Ed released several books including Elvis: Shot By Ed Bonja, Viva Elvis, and Spotlight On Elvis. In 2012, EIN reviewed the deluxe, coffee table release, Viva Elvis, rating it as one of the finest Elvis photo books ever published and a "visual assault on your senses" - the text was in Japanese and the photos were viscerally mouth watering. We gave it a "Highly Recommended" commendation. Copies of Viva Elvis are still available from Amazon Japan.
In 2004, EIN's Piers Beagley spoke with Ed Bonja at length in a great two-part interview.

Elvis Calendars for 2020: A range of Elvis calendars have been released in the US for 2020 (EIN will feature EC released calendars shortly). They include:

'Elvis: Stories Behind The Songs' Book Review:  BBC Local Radio presenter Matt Shepherd has published his first printed book looking at some of Elvis' biggest hits and lesser known treasures.
'Elvis Presley: Stories Behind The Songs' is the first of a two volume book and starts in January 1969, almost 50 years ago, when Elvis recorded in Memphis for the first time in 14 years.
The 248-page book features nine chapters examining Elvis' stunning musical legacy. Elvis' recordings from 1969 - 1973 feature in the first section of the book while Elvis' fabulous fifties performances make up the second part.
A lot of EIN readers will have read so much about Elvis' amazing legacy already that a new book really needs to have an alternate viewpoint to keep one interested - and we think Sheppard’s 248-page book does just that.
Unlike other books, Sheppard’s examination of each song (usually) explains the composers backstory, the connection to Elvis, who previously recorded the song, alternate reviews, interview extracts and website links to other sites (such as youtube) and performances of the song by other artists.

EIN's Piers Beagley selected the book for some summer holiday reading on the beach and found himself enjoying what he found ..

ELVIS Movie in Pre-Production: Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, husband and wife collaborators are back home in Australia to work on what will probably go down as their biggest career gamble to date: recreating the life and times of music icon Elvis Presley for the big screen.
Naturally the local film industry is excited by the huge Warner Bros project coming to Australia, with the production being split between Queensland and Sydney.
Luhrmann and Martin have previously recreated Belle Epoque Parisian nightclubs and Jazz Age New York with much fanfare in Sydney, so Graceland on the Gold Coast is highly feasible.
But in these early days knowing exactly what to expect with the Elvis film is uncertain. Indeed, while Luhrmann and Martin share a love of sequins with Elvis (see below) when delving into the the real life of the King of Rock, things can get quite murky.
It was last June at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood that Luhrmann was working hard on his Elvis epic, a project which has been on the backburner for several years. (EIN first reported this project back in May 2014!)
It was at the time that Luhrmann confirmed he had won the blessing of both Elvis' ex-wife Priscilla as well as Lisa Marie to make the film. Both women have been long-term defenders - and fierce proponents - of the Elvis image and estate, which has generated hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue since his death in 1977.
So the question remain about just how accurately the legend of the much-loved Elvis Presley showbiz icon and "Southern gentleman" reflects the reality of Elvis Presley the man.
Handsome young actor Austin Butler will portray Elvis in Baz's film which covers a 20-year period tracking Presley’s rise from
“very famous” to “minor American God.”
Central to the story will be Presley's tumultuous relationship with his manager, a colourful and rather disturbing character named Colonel Tom Parker, who will be played by Tom Hanks.
When Presley died in August 1977,  Parker did not join the global outpouring of grief. Instead he flew to New York to negotiate a deal for the merchandising rights to the name and likeness of the dead star.
Posthumous sales of Elvis records and memorabilia boomed.
"Elvis didn't die," the Colonel told callers in the days following Presley's death. "The body did. We're keeping Elvis' spirit alive."
Before managing Elvis, Colonel Parker worked in a travelling circus with a dancing chicken act. The fowl were encouraged to perform by placing them on a kitchen hotplate, invisible to the audience.
Some have argued Colonel Parker's methods did not change much by the time he got hold of Elvis, who at the end of his career was touring in an endless series of fairly low rent productions at Parker's behest.
But what about Elvis himself? How will he be presented in the film? As the hip-swivelling love god or as the grown man who, by today's standards, dated rather young girls.
It was in 1959 when Elvis was 24-years-old serving in the military in Germany that he met Priscilla Beaulieu who was only 14-years-old at the time but who later would become his one and only wife.
They dated for six months before he returned to the US. In her memoir Elvis and Me, Priscilla writes that Elvis remained a gentleman until they married many years later in 1967.
Jerry Lee Lewis' career was initially ruined when the UK pres discovered he was married to Myra Gale Brown, his first cousin once removed, who was only 13 years old. It was Lewis' third marriage.
Let's hope Baz Luhrmann can pull off a genuinely truthful and also stunning look at the magnificence of Elvis' early career.

ELVIS Forever - 2019: - August 16th, 1956, Elvis arrived on board an American Airlines flight to Los Angeles International airport in order to start work on his first film role, The Reno Brothers soon to be renamed 'Love Me Tender'.
Elvis was only 21 years old and at the start of his incredible trajectory to become the world's biggest superstar.
Little did Elvis know that he was already halfway through his all too-short life on earth.
In the same month Elvis would tell fans, "I've been lucky. You know something? I just feel sometimes like it's all a dream, like I'll rub my eyes and wake up and it will be over. I hope not. I hope it never happens. I hope it never ends"
Sadly, just 21 years later, it would end far too soon.
Forty two years on we all are once again thinking about tragic end to Elvis' incredible life and how much he did for us in his all too short life-time.

In 2019 EIN's Piers Beagley looks back at why the legacy of ELVIS is still so important to us - along with memories of Elvis from Jerry Schilling, Linda Thompson, Alan Fortas, George Klein, Joe Esposito, Marty Lacker, Lamar Fike and Larry Geller

31 July 2019 .... It was FIFTY YEARS ago today ... Elvis was back in Las Vegas ..
Elvis’ in 1969 - the triumphant return: - By Maria Davies / Rex Martin
Ian Fraser-Thomson 1969 fan Interview: he was there for Opening Night show and the Press Conference
Wednesday 31 July 2019 .... It was FIFTY YEARS ago today ... Elvis was back in Las Vegas ..
'Elvis Needed a Reboot in July 1969. So Did Las Vegas': Today is the 50th anniversary of Elvis’ Vegas comeback show, on July 31, 1969. This was a milestone and is being celebrated by the new RCA 11-CD boxed set of his ’69 Vegas performances, a reunion concert in Memphis next month and major Elvis Week celebrations.
Author Richard Zoglin reports in the New York Times.
... In the late sixties Elvis’ bona fides were in question when he returned to LIVE on-stage performances after more than eight years. His ’69 comeback show was a make-or-break gamble.
Unfortunately Elvis’ Vegas years are mostly recalled in the tabloid press as a period of commercial excess and artistic decline: the bombastic shows, the gaudy white jumpsuits, the ballooning weight, the erratic stage behavior, the drugs. “For many,” wrote Dylan Jones in “Elvis Has Left the Building” “Vegas Elvis was already Dead Elvis.”
But for that 1969 comeback, and at least a year or two after, Elvis was at his peak as a stage performer, and he created a show that not only revitalized his career, but changed the face of Las Vegas entertainment.
The younger generation was going to arena concerts, not hanging out in the Sands Hotel lounge. So it was fitting that Las Vegas, a town blindsided by the rock revolution, would turn to a megawatt rock ‘n’ roll star as the agent of its reinvention two weeks before Woodstock would take place in upstate New York.
Elvis’ return to the stage in Vegas was a make-or-break career gamble. Colonel Parker had envisioned a traditional
Vegas show, with chorus girls and choreography. Elvis wanted something different: a concert to reconnect him with his fans and showcase all the music he loved.
But when Elvis walked out, to a throbbing rhythm intro, grabbed the microphone with a trembling hand, and launched into “Blue Suede Shoes,” the audience went wild.
It was the old Elvis, rocking as hard as ever, on a song he hadn’t done in a decade. He followed with more vintage hits — 'All Shook Up', 'Don’t Be Cruel,' 'Hound Dog'. He did them faster than in the old days, almost as if he wanted to get through them as quickly as possible, to get to the more mature and varied material he was starting to record. He sang “In the Ghetto,” the social-protest song that had been released in the spring and became a hit. He did covers of songs identified with other artists — Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode,” Ray Charles’s “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” the Beatles’ “Yesterday.”
The high point of the show was a galvanic, seven-minute version of a song almost no one in the crowd had heard before: “Suspicious Minds,” which would be released during his Vegas run and give him his first No. 1 hit in seven years.
The show lasted an hour and 15 minutes, and Elvis was on fire throughout — prowling the stage like a panther, doing karate kicks, sweating and downing water and Gatorade. He was huffing and puffing after just a few minutes, but the voice never faltered: richer, more expressive, more powerful than ever. “I never saw anything like it in my life,” said Mac Davis, the singer-songwriter who had written “In the Ghetto” for him and was in the audience that night. “You couldn’t take your eyes off the guy. It was just crazy. Women rushing the stage, people clamoring over each other. I couldn’t wipe the grin off my face the entire time.”
Presley talked to the audience too — nervously, with a few corny jokes and a lot of self-deprecating asides. But that was part of the appeal: this was no slick Vegas performer with polished jokes and programmed patter. Elvis seemed just as awed by the occasion as everyone in the audience.
He played for four solid weeks, seven nights a week, two shows a night — not a single evening off — and every gig was sold out. The critics raved; David Dalton in Rolling Stone called Elvis “supernatural, his own resurrection.” Richard Goldstein, writing in The New York Times, said watching him “felt like getting hit in the face with a bucket of melted ice. He looked so timeless up there, so constant.” The hotel instantly signed him up for five more years.
Elvis brought something new to Las Vegas: not an intimate, Rat Pack-style nightclub show, but a big rock-concert extravaganza. He showed that rock ’n’ roll (and country and R&B too) could work on the big Vegas stage. And he brought in a new kind of audience: not the Vegas regulars and high rollers, but a broader, more middle-American crowd: female fans who had screamed for Elvis as teenagers, families who made Elvis the centerpiece of their summer vacation. It was the same audience that Vegas would discover, over the next couple of decades, as it embarked on its own reinvention — a foretaste of the Vegas we know today, the Vegas of Cirque du Soleil, theme-park hotels, and (more recently) a new generation of pop-star residencies, from Elton John to Lady Gaga.

'Elvis Live 1969' SONY Promo Video: SONY have released a cute promo video for the brand new "Elvis Live 1969" deluxe 11CD boxset and also the double August 26 1969 vinyl release.
Worth a look - only runs 1 /12 minutes

Unfortunately they state that "Elvis hadn't performed on stage for over 11 years" - which is crazy seeing that the March 1961 Arizona Memorial - Pearl Harbour fund-raiser was one of Elvis' best concerts of all time.
Elvis also performed two concerts in Memphis on February 25 1961.

(Book Review): Elvis in Vegas: How the King Reinvented the Las Vegas Show (Richard Zoglin): EIN recently interviewed senior editor of Time magazine, Richard Zoglin, about his new book, Elvis in Vegas.

To complement our interview, EIN's Nigel Patterson provides a detailed review of Zoglin's book, a release that offers a lot more than its title suggests, and a book that is clearly one of the most important Elvis releases of 2019.

'Elvis: From Georgia To Florida' April 1975 FTD Review: Mid 1975 found Elvis back in good form and having fun on stage. This 5" digipack double-soundboard features two concerts from April 1975. The Opening Show at the Coliseum in Macon on April 24, 1975 and previously unreleased Lakeland April 27, 1975 Afternoon Show. Elvis always had an extra spark on the first date of a tour and would often include some new songs in the set-list.
Unfortunately soundboards from the start of this tour all have the same inherent 'problem' an audio-mix with a HEAVY bias towards Piano tracks - there was often very little drums, guitar or orchestra in the mix. FTD have already released 'Elvis In Atlanta' two concerts from this same tour, plus the April 27 Lakeland Evening show so can this set really provide anything new?

Elvis soundboard super-collector Geoffrey McDonnell & EIN's Piers Beagley check out the reality of this new FTD double-pack with mixed feelings.....

'The Fun In Acapulco Sessions' Deluxe FTD Review: Released by FTD back in March 'The Fun In Acapulco Sessions' is a 3-CD set that the publicity noted included more than an hour of previously unreleased false starts and complete takes!
The 28-page booklet includes rare photographs, memorabilia, session data, Movie Trivia and an updated overview of the movie by Alan Hanson - with all tracks recently remixed and remastered.
A Mexican locale, some Tijuana horns, plus the interesting presence of the Mexican ‘Amigos’ at the recording sessions presented a novel setting for Elvis.
If you like Elvis, sunny locations, sixties movies packed full of songs and the Latino sound then there is no doubt that Fun In Acapulco must be one of your favourites.
But 56 years after the original album and movie can there really be that much of interest left in the vault unreleased?
EIN's Piers Beagley investigates this massive set, discovers all the Previously Unreleased Delights - and wonders if 33 minutes of Guadalajara might be too much for some...
A FTD Deluxe set deserves a proper review and EIN gives you 4000 words plus to see if you really need to add this limited release to your collection!

Elvis LIVE Aug 23, 1969 Album Review + Elvis Concert Review 1969: ... "The atmosphere throughout the entire hotel was nail-bitingly electric! It is difficult for me to describe and paint a true portrait of attending in person this unique occasion - Elvis' Return to Splendor LIVE in 1969 - but I'll try my best.  I want, and hope, you will understand the excitement of what has to be the pinnacle of Elvis' career to date!"

'The Best Of The '68 Comeback Special' CD Review: The original NBC TV Special featured Elvis playing with so much passion that it inspired a career renaissance
Released to cash-in on the recent “Elvis All-Star Tribute” one can only hope that the mass of Post Malone and Ed Sheeran fans will consider Elvis’ amazing musical legacy worth checking out.
Elvis never looked cooler than in the 68 Special and this surely has got to help.
The original ELVIS NBC soundtrack vinyl album was obviously the very first selected ‘Best Of’ while BMG’s marvellous 1998 “Memories” double-album was an expanded version. This new ‘Best Of’ has presumably been selected by Rob Santos and John Jackson.
Elvis was SO DAMN GOOD performing for the NBC TV special that any alternate edit has to be enjoyable so EIN thought it worth giving the new set a spin. With all of Elvis’ USA sales getting a positive bump after the new TV show we know that this new set is being played in a fair few homes.
EIN's Piers Beagley investigates, can another '68 ComeBack Special compilation really be worth buying all over again?
and Have Your Say! Does this really help Elvis' great legacy...

'What was Elvis searching for?' EIN Spotlight: The question is raised – but never answered – in the title of HBO’s recent absorbing, imperfect documentary 'Elvis Presley: The Searcher'.
At the start it seems clear what the teenage Elvis was searching for – an escape from the oblivion of poverty in the American South. Yet his quest was cultural as well as financial.
Later Elvis read obsessively, seeking out such books as The Impersonal Life, Joseph Brenner’s guide to self-discovery and Kahil Gibran’s book of fables, The Prophet. In his copy of Gibran’s tome, Elvis jotted down the line: “A singer can sing his songs but he must have an ear to receive the song”.
So what exactly was Elvis searching for?

In this fascinating EIN Spotlight respected author Paul Simpson takes a close look at this all important question which, for some reason, was basically ignored in the recent HBO documentary..

The VINYL Boom: Over 7.6 million vinyl LPs were sold in the USA during the first half of 2018, a 20% increase from the previous year, while in Australia vinyl sales increased by $3 million, the same increase of 20%. In the same period CD sales however dropped by 15%.
Elvis vinyl is still selling very nicely with ‘ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits’ recently in the UK Top ten VINYL charts.
And there is plenty of Elvis Presley vinyl on offer....

‘ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits’ on GOLD Vinyl: ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits was re-released by Sony Music on GOLD Vinyl on 12 October. UK's Entertainment-Focus have posted this cute review.
... What is there to say about Elvis Presley that hasn’t already been said?
It may be 41 years since the icon died tragically at only 42 years old but his music continues to live on, and likely will forever. It’s actually mind-blowing to think that his music has survived for almost as long as he was alive. In 2002 Sony Music released a new greatest hits collection titled ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits, which dominated charts across the world and sold millions and millions of copies. 16 years on from its original release, ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits has been reissued on 2LP vinyl.
Taking inspiration from the album cover, the release has been pressed on gold vinyl making the whole package feel very special.
Presley was an incredibly prolific artist so getting this collection down to 31 tracks was no easy feat. It also includes the ALLC Junkie XL remix.
What was achieved with ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits though, is a

collection that gives you all the highlights you need from The King’s career to showcase the incredible impact he had on music. The album opens with Heartbreak Hotel and there isn’t a single filler track here.
It’s actually near impossible to pick out highlights across the 2LPs because every single one of these songs is a classic.
Of course no Elvis collection would be complete without Suspicious Minds and that track is near the end of the track listing on the final side.
The release features the artwork from the original 2002 release and it’s a beautiful, high-quality gatefold. I mentioned earlier about the gold vinyl but what I’ve not commented on yet is the sound. The CD version was a little patchy given that the songs were all recorded at different times. It’s not as noticeable on the vinyl release and the quality is crystal clear. The warm crackle of vinyl adds to the overall feel too.
ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits is a must-have release for any Elvis Presley fan. While he had plenty of great songs that aren’t featured here, this collection truly is the definitive one to own. There’s not a single bad song here and it’s lengthy enough to give you value for money. The whole vinyl package is fantastic and it looks as good as it sounds.
They don’t make artists like Elvis anymore and they probably never will again.

‘ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits’ GOLD Vinyl Double LP.

'ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits' is a must-have release for any Elvis Presley fan.

The Official 'A Boy From Tupelo' Vinyl album is still selling, while there are some interesting Public Domain Vinyl releases out in the UK including 'Jailhouse Rock' with 16 tracks even including 'Lonesome Cowboy'! Also the rather odd CD called 'Girls! Girls! Girls! + Loving You' with thirty tracks including Bonus tracks such as 'Is It So Strange' and even 'Good Luck Charm' out 29 October 2018 from Hoo Doo Records!

'68 Comeback Special - 50th-anniversary' deluxe box-set.

Priced at around US$150 and £95.40 in the UK.

Not cheap if you already own the DVDs and CD box-set but the Blu-Rays are still pretty tempting.

'68 Comeback Special - 50th-anniversary': More publicity out for the new box set.
... '68 Comeback Special (50th Anniversary Edition) is set for release on November 30 and includes five CDs of music plus two Blu-ray discs featuring video content.
After spending most of the decade in Hollywood making forgettable movies and mostly boring music to accompany those films, Presley staged a comeback in 1968 with a TV special that was simply called Elvis and aired on Dec. 3.
Part of that program featured Presley singing some of his old hits, as well as a few new songs, surrounded by a lavish, Hollywood-style backdrop. But another section of that show spotlighted Presley, decked out in black leather and armed with a guitar, sitting on a stool on a spare stage that also included guitarist Scotty Moore and drummer D.J. Fontana, two-thirds of the trio that catapulted Presley to fame in the mid '50s with their work on the Sun sessions and early RCA recordings.
That "sit-down" performance included raw takes of some of their best records, including "That's All Right" and "Heartbreak Hotel."
There were also scorching versions of "Baby, What You Want Me to Do" and "Lawdy, Miss Clawdy" that pretty much signalled Presley's return to rock 'n' roll.
The Comeback Special, as it was later called, opened the door to Presley's terrific Memphis records from 1969 and his renewed success in the '70s until his death in 1977.
The '68 Comeback Special (50th Anniversary Edition) collects all of the existing audio and video from the show plus rehearsals and sessions recorded with the Wrecking Crew.
The CD Track-listing is a previously noted by EIN - see below.
The book also features rare photos and memorabilia and full recording data

'Elvis Presley: The Searcher' DVD Review: For fans of Elvis’ music there is no doubt that the HBO documentary “Elvis Presley The Searcher” was one of the best programmes ever made about Elvis and where his inspiration and music came from.

Fans were therefore pleased to know that the documentary would be released on DVD. The vision quality is excellent and it is a joy to slow-mo through some of the newly found clips and historical footage of Elvis.

However, how can such a fine documentary feel like such a let down as fans discover there are no DVD extras included that look deeper into Elvis' search?
EIN's Piers Beagley looks at the recent Australian DVD releases to find a good value-for-money documentary is also one of the biggest Elvis marketing failures in years and a disgrace.

(Book Review) The Comeback - Elvis and the Story of the 68 Special (Simon Goddard): The past two months have been a busy period regarding Elvis' legendary '68 Comeback Special. Marking its 50th anniversary, the Special was shown in cinemas and two new books were published, one by Steve Binder (Director/Producer of the Special) and the other by noted rock music analyst, Simon Goddard.

EIN's Nigel Patterson recently took a few deep breaths and submerged himself in the Simon Goddard release.

Having previously read a number of the author's cerebrally challenging books, he was not surprised to find that Goddard's treatise on Elvis' legendary Comeback Special is one hell of an intellectively challenging and dizzy rollercoaster of a ride....... a journey most rewarding for those brave enough to go the distance.

UPDATED - ‘Where No One Stands Alone’ In-Depth Review: It is forty years since Elvis Presley entered a recording studio and he seems very reluctant to record anything new. So in terms of releasing a "new" album of Elvis material the topic has always been a tricky one. After commercial failure of the last Elvis / RPO album that concept has been dropped in favour of an Andy Childs led “Re-Vamp” of some Elvis Gospel.
Recorded over fifty years ago there is no doubt that some of Elvis’ Gospel songs might benefit from some sensitive modern production. And, after all, there is an interesting selection of tracks to work with. Not only that, but Lisa Marie was also involved in the recording.
So can a new ‘Re-Vamp’ of Elvis Gospel really work and can we recommend it to Elvis collectors?
Click here as EIN's Piers Beagley and Bryan Gruszka are back again to cause "Double-trouble" and supply a very detailed review, discovering what's good and bad...

(Book Review) The Elvis Experience (Dave Hebler): As a member of Elvis' Memphis Mafia, Dave Hebler was part of Elvis' inner sanctum at least until his acromonious sacking, along with Red West and Sonny West, in 1976, and the subsequent publication of the infamous book, Elvis What Happened?.

Over the years, Dave, Red and Sonny West reclaimed respect in the Elvis world, at least with many fans, if not the Presley family and EPE.

Dave Hebler's new book was released during Elvis Week 2018.

The Elvis Experience has a 'fan friendly' feel to it. There are many amusing and fun stories and the author does not shy away from discussing at least some of the not so positive aspects of his experience working for Elvis.

UPDATED - EIN review ‘Elvis: The Searcher’ Deluxe CD boxset: If your main interest in Elvis is his music then HBO’s ‘Elvis: The Searcher’ will probably become your favourite documentary ever produced about our hero.
The companion 3-CD deluxe edition box set offers an expanded 55-track overview of Elvis’ career as heard in the film including familiar hit recordings, powerful vocal performances and rare outtakes plus a bonus disc of additional recordings relevant to the film - including several early singles that inspired Elvis.
Thom Zimny said, "To live with the music of The Searcher over a period of years was more than a privilege. It changed my thinking about the emotional life of songs, both for those who make them and those who listen to them."
While keen Elvis fans may already own all the chosen songs Director Thom Zimny's selection is so eclectic that there is still plenty to enjoy and discover. But does the box-set really work without having seen the film?

FTD will NOT end in 2019:  A fair number of uninformed supposed Elvis "insiders" (even some Fan Club Presidents) have been publishing fictional stories that the FTD label is planning to close in 2019.
Ernst Jorgensen had strongly denied this story stating, that FTD has plans to continue for the foreseeable future.
In an interesting interview about 'The Future of FTD' - with Trevor Cajiao in the recent ETM&HM magazine - Ernst Jorgensen's main points were....
1. FTD will not be closing in 2019
2. The 'Classic Albums" series is nearly complete but there are more to come, noting 'Aloha' and 'Madison Square Garden' are still to be done.
3. Expanded "complete session tapes" releases are being considered
4. Plenty more soundboards to come

UPDATED - Trying To Get To You: The Truth Behind The Elvis And Roy Orbison Show Rumours: For decades there has always been an unsubstantiated rumour that Elvis Presley appeared as a guest on Roy Orbison's TV show on the local station KOSA.
The Roy Orbison website notes that both Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley performed on Roy’s TV show in late 1955.
Respected author Colin Escott wrote in his book Good Rockin’ Tonight about a kinescope of Elvis on the Roy Orbison TV show actually existing.
Some keen Elvis fans have said that they have seen this very kinescope at Elvis Week shows back in the 80s.
But like infamous Pied Piper of Cleveland does this footage really exist and is there any real proof that Elvis did appear on the Roy Orbison TV show?
Shane Brown (author of Reconsider Baby: Elvis: A Listener's Guide) has done an immense amount of investigation and thinks he has found the answer.

Book Review "Reconsider Baby: Elvis: A Listener's Guide": Elvis Presley made over 700 recordings during his life. This book by author Shane Brown examines all of them. Session by session, song by song, Reconsider Baby takes the reader on a journey from Elvis’s first recordings in 1953 through to his last performances in 1977.
This significantly expanded and revised edition of 2014’s Elvis Presley: A Listener’s Guide provides a commentary on Elvis’s vast and varied body of work, while also examining in detail how Elvis and his recordings and performances were discussed in newspapers, magazines, and trade publications from the 1950s through to the 1970s.
The text draws on over 500 contemporary articles and reviews, telling for the first time the story of how Elvis and his career played out in the printed media, and often forcing us to question our understanding of how Elvis’s work was received at the time of release.

Can another detailed examination into Elvis' musical legacy really be worth buying? (Hint, the answer is a big YES!)

Mindi Miller Interview with EIN: Mindi Miller was a working actress when she met Elvis in early 1975. She was interested in karate (she performed all her own movie stunts), exploring spirituality and the Bible and so they had a lot in common.
Mindi Miller and Elvis bonded over their common interests and soon afterwards he asked her to go on tour with him in April 1975.
She stayed friends with Elvis through the years - along with members of the 'Memphis Mafia' - and attended his funeral.

EIN's Sanja Meegin recently caught up with Mindi Miller to talk about her close friendship with Elvis over the years.
In this fascinating interview she discusses. . .
- Her first night with Elvis
- How Elvis persuaded her to cancel her overseas movie & modelling plans
- Their mutual interest in Karate
- Graceland and meeting Lisa Marie
- Attending Elvis' funeral
. . . and much much more...
Go here for EIN's Sanja Meegin and her intimate and detailed discussion with the delightful Mindi Miller - Now with Reader Feedback.

'Marty Lacker: A Life Well-Lived' & Elvis at American Studio's Interview: It was with immense sadness that last month EIN had to report on the death of our great friend - and a true friend to Elvis - Marty Lacker. We will miss him dearly.
Marty is well-known as one of the key members of the Memphis Mafia and also co-Best Man at Elvis' wedding. He was known for both his honesty and being forthright with his opinions. He was the only member of the Memphis Mafia who still watched and commented on recent Elvis News. He had no issue with holding people to account (especially ones who would inflate their importance within Elvis' legacy) and would regularly ask EIN to add his comments or to correct any inaccuracy.
Elvis fans often ask about Marty Lacker's background, how he came to meet Elvis, as well as his involvement in the music industry outside of working for The King.
As a prelude to Ken Sharp's fascinating interview with Marty Lacker and a discussion about Elvis' famous American Studio' Memphis sessions, EIN presents "Marty Lacker: a life well-lived" in which Marty tells of his life in the music industry, his friendship with Elvis along with his dislike of the over-controlling Col Parker.
Go here to learn all you need to know about Marty Lacker as well as Elvis outstanding Memphis American Sound sessions in 1969.
(Spotlight; Source,KenSharp/ElvisInformationNetwork)

Marty Lacker RIP : Sadly Marty will no longer be able to answer all your those fascinating questions, but his honesty and openess should not be forgotten.

- Chips Moman (RIP) later thoughts on Elvis
- Being a consultant on 1979 "ELVIS" movie.
- The demonstrations in Memphis this Elvis Week.
- Felton Jarvis as Elvis' Executive Album Producer.
- The Jungle Room sessions
- Elvis might have some illegitimate children
- Why did Elvis never travel to holiday in Europe,
- Is David Stanley, Holy Priest of truth, OR a liar

UPDATED - 'Way Down In The Jungle Room' EIN Review:  Released for August 2016 this SONY Legacy pack celebrates the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ last recording sessions which took place in Graceland’s Jungle Room.
The publicity noted the sessions “have been newly mixed by Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording” and “includes both outtakes and in-the-studio dialog, providing a ‘fly-on-the-wall experience’ of what the sessions were like".
Elvis' original 76/77 albums were fairly uninspired collections (bar a few fine singles) and on the original LPs it was almost impossible to glimpse any sign of creative input from Elvis through the syrupy overdubs. It wasn't until the release of FTD’s magnificent ‘The Jungle Room Sessions’ that many fans began to understand the raw emotion, close camaraderie and Elvis’ personal feelings that were revealed by these intimate Graceland sessions.
To produce that same kind of revelation for the 'General Public' would be a very tricky project but that is exactly what the new legacy team has done - and to great effect.
Go here as EIN's Piers Beagley discovers the old Elvis magic and what is special for Elvis Collectors in our in-depth review

UPDATED - Paul Dowling EIN Interview Part Three: Paul Dowling is without doubt one of the major names in the Elvis World. In the final part of our fascinating interview Paul Dowling discusses ....

- Unreleased Elvis material that still hasn’t come out
- Why does Ernst Jorgensen doubt this claims
- His BMG project 'For The First Time Ever' - what happened
- The true story of obtaining the Million Dollar Quartet tape

Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage!
The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
Go here to our detailed 'TIGER MAN' spotlight as EIN's Piers Beagley puts in the hard yards to check the facts from the fantasy .
