Following on from their previous successful book releases, Sun Singlet (Sun Singles) and The Elvis Map, the busy Official Elvis Presley Fan Club of Finland has released its latest great book targeted principally (but not exclusively) at a young audience.
While the primary audience is the young, the book will definitely appeal to those of us either still young at heart or yearning to reclaim our yout. Hence adults can have fun too.
The 48 page A4 size Elvis coloring book allows the "artist" to not only color in various Elvis related milestones but in so doing learn about Elvis' life and career and discover places of interest in Memphis.
The book, which has been released simultaneously in four languages: English, Finnish, French and German, uses a clever underlying theme with each picture telling the story of two young girls who visit Memphis and walk in Elvis' footsteps.
Each full or double page visual (see above and below) is nicely drawn offering the "artist" detailed aspects to color in and inviting refection on what each picture means. The illustrators, Katri Manty (inside book pictures) and Roosa Volanen (cover images), are to be congratulated, they have done a wonderful job of visually portraying Elvis and aspects of his story.
The book includes quotes/contributions from Letitia (Tish) Henley Kirk, Bill Morris, Maurice Elliott, Cynthia Pepper, Lowell Hays, The Spa Guy, and members of the Smith Family. The contributors are also visually featured as are major places/attractions of interest in Memphis such as the Lauderdale Courts, Sun Studio, Humes High, Mid-South Coliseum, Elvis' favorite ride the Zippin' Pippin at Libertyland, Lansky Brothers, Baptist Memorial Hospital, Tennessee Karate Institute and of course, Graceland.
Verdict: There are other Elvis coloring in books on the market but in EIN's opinion the Finnish fan club's release is a standout! With its strong thematic element, contributions from those who knew Elvis, and great pictures, this release is a fun, rewarding experience, and one which will be enjoyed by many youngsters (and more than the odd one or two older fans). However, sadly and probably not surprisingly, I also learned that my coloring in skills are still not up to scratch. Back to art school for me.
EIN thanks Jani Turunen (Editor in chief) and Lauri Jalanti from the fan club for providing the book for us to review. (Book Review, Source: EIN)
