'Elvis At Christmas' the next Elvis & the RPO release?: Elvis Matters fan club suggests that the next 'Elvis and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra' release will be titled 'Elvis At Christmas'.
Originally EIN reported on December 27 last year that album producer Don Reedman noted that plans were underway for a new Elvis Gospel album featuring the RPO. Perhaps plans have changed, or more likely Gospel material will also be included in the new RPO album. The "Christmas Duets" album was of course not as big a success as had been hoped for.
In Elvis Matters next June magazine they have an exclusive interview with the managing director of the orchestra. During the conversation Ian Maclay told them the news that during the next few months a Christmas album will be recorded with the working title 'Elvis At Christmas'.
The release of the album is planned in November and some tracks will also be part of the set list of the UK RPO concerts tour.

'The Death and Resurrection of Elvis Presley' New Book: Out this September is 'The Death and Resurrection of Elvis Presley' by author Ted Harrison ('Elvis People: The Cult of the King').
The publicity includes ...
There is no other way to put it: Elvis is the King. Note the present tense: even though Elvis (supposedly) died nearly forty years ago, he has lived on in our hearts, as a sound, as an image, and as an especially vigorous personality. In fact, it’s safe to say no other celebrity has done so quite as well. The Death and Resurrection of Elvis Presley is the story of that afterlife, of Elvis after he left the building. Walking the eccentrically carpeted rooms of Graceland, bidding into stratospheric sums on his auctioned relics, and mingling among the some 200,000 impersonators of his likeness, Ted Harrison offers nothing less than the ultimate Elvis tribute.
Harrison begins, of course, in pilgrimage: to Graceland. He shows how Elvis’s estate was pillaged nearly to ruin by his manager but was saved through the deft business acumen and financial vision of his divorced wife, one Priscilla Presley. If Graceland seems holy, that’s because it is: Harrison unveils in Elvis’s allure a deeply spiritual dimension, showing how Elvis fans, over the decades, have anointed their idol with Christ-like qualities. Underpinning the whole story is Elvis’s extraordinary charisma and - lest we forget - his astonishing musical genius.
Fascinating, colorful, and deeply informative, this book is a must-have for any fan, anyone who was ever lucky enough to see Elvis alive or who hopes they might still be able to.

"My Brother Elvis" To Be Released Worldwide On August 16: David E. Stanley, Elvis Presley's step brother whom Elvis took under his wing as a young adolescent to work with him on tour in the 70's, will release his new book, My Brother Elvis, worldwide on Amazon on August 16. A very personal story about Elvis Presley's last years of addiction struggles, the book release coincides with the 39th Anniversary of Elvis' tragic passing at Graceland on August 16, 1977. Stanley is issuing the new release in his ongoing efforts to help those struggling with addiction, as he himself, turned his life around from drug addiction after the passing of his brother. The book also includes a hotline for addiction help.
David E. Stanley, whom "The King" invited to become his bodyguard on the road at age 16, brings his first-hand perspective to the life of the legend the world has come to know. Over the past few decades, the author, filmmaker and globally renowned inspirational, business and self-development speaker has inspired hundreds of thousands of people around the world with cautionary tales of the dark side of Elvis, which ultimately led to his demise. Now, with the release of My Brother Elvis, Stanley further loosens the mystery and opens up candidly about his years as part of Elvis' family and road entourage.
"I hope that these revelations of my time with Elvis might save others from the pain I suffered during the final years of his life," Stanley says. He continues, "It's my way of reaching out to those who loved Elvis in the hopes of touching their lives as much as he touched mine. I felt it was my responsibility to write a book about these realities of Elvis beyond the glitz, glamour and fun. He was human, and his very human frailties and vulnerabilities cost him his life. If addiction could happen to Elvis, it can happen to anyone."
|
|
Though My Brother Elvis is the rawest, most personal and hard hitting of Stanley's works, the author has drawn inspiration from his years with his famous stepbrother in several previous bestselling books. The Elvis Encycopedia was the first complete and authenticated compendium containing everything there was to know about the singer's personal and professional life. Other works include the New York Times bestseller Elvis, We Love You Tender; Raised On Rock; Restoring My Father's Honor; and Conversations With The King: Journals Of A Young Apprentice.
"I have chosen to share my stories about Elvis and my past, even as dark as they can be, only if they can serve to communicate a positive, hopeful message that can help people," says Stanley. He continues, "Nobody loved Elvis more than I did. I wrote My Brother Elvis to humanize him not only for longtime fans passionate about him and his music, but also for young people, to make sure they realize that while life with 'The King' was often pretty cool, there was also a high price to pay for the party."
.. As David Stanley has already published the books 'Raised On Rock', 'The Elvis Encyclopedia' and "Conversations With the King' - can there be anymore that hasn't already been told?
See EIN's exclusive interview with David Stanley here.

Billy Ray Cyrus looks for a reinvention as a fallen Elvis impersonator on CMT: After spending years portraying the father of a fictional pop star Billy Ray Cyrus the country singer-actor sought something different for his next TV project. The comedy “Still the King” tells the story of “Burnin’ ” Vernon Brownmule, a one-hit-wonder who became the “second best Elvis impersonator” in the business. It premieres on US CMT on June 12.
The series follows Vernon's misadventures after he bottoms out with alcohol, is sentenced to community service and discovers he has a teenage daughter, the result of a one night stand. Naturally, this leads to a job impersonating a preacher. Think of it as “Eastbound & Down” goes to Nashville.
- How did this show come together?
My grandfather was a Pentecostal preacher, my dad had a gospel quartet in that church. I’ve always been fascinated with Elvis. And, just being totally honest, I was asking myself, "How do I reinvent from this?"
|
|
I was playing some casinos in Louisiana. It was late one night, the bus was fueling up, I was out walking my dog and looked at this old dilapidated Pentecostal church and in the background was this place that Elvis used to play on the "Louisiana Hayride" and all of a sudden it just hit me: dysfunctional Elvis impersonator who finds his way into the church as a preacher. And boom. I went back on the bus and started writing it.
- Did you already have Elvis impersonation in your back pocket?
I had never done any in my life. I always say there’s a little bit of Elvis in all of us, and sometimes we just don’t know where it is. When you put on an Elvis suit and start putting on the jewelry, a little bit of Elvis just naturally comes out.
- The show plays a lot with your past, which you’ve shown some sense of humor about, but never like this. How was that?
Well, of course I go, “OK, so I’m reinventing myself, right? What’s the best way to reinvent myself but as a dysfunctional Elvis impersonator who lies his way into the church, who is a one hit wonder, and has a mullet?” (laughs) You know, it’s like, "Wait a minute, are you sure that’s a reinvention?" I hate to say it, but I even laugh now thinking about it.
- Did you go down a dark road like this back in the '90s?
Yeah I lived a little bit of a crazy life at one point. It never got quite that dark -- it got a little blurry, but not dark.

Welsh Misspelt Elvis rock painting sent to Graceland: A painting of a rock daubed with the word Elvis on a Ceredigion hillside has been sent to the home of the king of rock 'n' roll in Memphis, Tennessee.
The rock has become a feature of Eisteddfa Gurig and artist Wynne Melville Jones captured it in a landscape painting.
Now, what began life has a misspelt act of graffiti in support of a politician will become a fixture at Graceland.
Mr Jones has sent it to be included in the museum.
Two men, the late film director John Hefin and David Meredith, former head of press and PR at HTV and S4C, painted the word Ellis on the rock in 1962 to show support for Islwyn Ffowc Elis, a novelist and Plaid Cymru candidate in Montgomeryshire. However, they misspelt his surname by adding a second l, which was subsequently changed to a v and it has been known as Elvis rock ever since.
|
|
A limited edition print of this original painting has been presented to the Elvis Archive at the famous mansion.
Mr Jones said: "Graceland is the most appropriate home for this painting - it has the Elvis museum and receives tens of thousands of visitors every year.
"I think this rock is like a national tribute from Wales to Elvis - the world's greatest rock star."
Mr Meredith said he was thrilled a print of the painting had been sent to Graceland and his original piece of graffiti had found such long-standing fame after being modified.

Elvis Guitar and Piano Sell At Auction: The guitar given to Elvis Presley by his father in 1969 went under the hammer at Julien's Auction this last weekend in New York for US$334,000.
Vernon Presley is said to have changed the finish of the Gibson Dove acoustic guitar to ebony after his son earned his black belt in karate. It beat auction house Julien’s estimate of US$200,000 to US$300,000 for Saturday’s sale. During a 1975 concert in Asheville, North Carolina, Presley had given the guitar to fan Mike Harris, who had kept it until now.
Elvis’s first piano also sold for US$140,025 but at less than the US$200,000-300,000 estimate - and overall the bids for every item no matter which superstar hey had belonged to were at less than expected.
Elvis Presley's 1961 black Mohair Lanksy Bros. suit which sold for $28,125;
Elvis Presley's painted leather jacket also sold for $50,000 which was the estimated value (See below)
Another highlight of the auction was the Michael Jackson red neoprene vinyl jacket created by Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush for his 996-1997 HIStory world tour. It scored more than four times the auctioneers’ estimate of US$40,000 to US$60,000 selling at $256,000.
The highest bid reached US$354,400, for John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics to Beatles song “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!” but Julien’s had expected it would fetch between US$300,000 and US$500,000. Overall, the sale produced lukewarm results.
Lady Gaga’s first piano, estimated to be worth US$100,000 to US$200,000, did not find a buyer. Neither did Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Fender Broadcaster electric guitar, valued at US$400,000 to US$600,000.

Graceland spend another $21M on Expansion Plans: EPE applied this week for more construction permits for work totaling $21.3 million across the street from Graceland.
The company will replace the complex of decades-old tourist buildings that house souvenir shops, dining and an exhibit of Elvis' cars.
Dirt work started a few months ago behind the existing buildings along Elvis Presley Boulevard at Craft Road.
The documents describe the planned construction as "core and shell construction'', the project total cost will around $35 million.
EPE calls it the "Westside Project'' because the buildings are on the west side of the street across from Graceland.
The old buildings will be removed and replaced with 200,000 square feet that will house a new museum of Elvis’ cars, two restaurants, a multipurpose building, six retail spaces, a museum themed “Elvis the Entertainer,’’ and other exhibits. |
|
Graceland officials have said they plan to move Elvis’ gold records, guitars, jumpsuits and other memorabilia from the mansion into the new space.
The tourist facilities will be greatly expanded on a 46-acre site that includes land acquired from where Craft Manor and other apartment complexes once stood. -
The two Elvis airplanes will stay in place.
The Westside Project will eventually mean the demolition of Heartbreak Hotel, but only after completion this fall of the new 450-room resort hotel called The Guest House at Graceland. The Guest House is on the east side of Elvis Presley Boulevard, north of Graceland.

Elvis Autograph Expert: It is a sad fact that the vast majority of Elvis autographs up for sale are fakes, with probably less than 5% being genuine, and especially in these days of easy on-line purchases. When Elvis was alive Graceland employed multiple secretaries who would often fake his signature on letters and fan club product.
Rich Consola however is an autograph expert who has been studying Presley’s autograph every day for the past 25 years.
Through sheer will, untold hours of study, and the gift of being “kind of OCD,” Consola has become an internationally respected authenticator of Elvis’ signature, assessing the loops and swoops to pick out the genuine from the counterfeit.
Not that Elvis has made that easy.
“He signed a lot of autographs, but the thing about Elvis is that he almost never signed his name twice the same way.” Consola knows Elvis’ handwriting, how Elvis shaped the opening E, how he looped the terminal Y, how he signed every check “E.A. Presley,” how he sometimes wrote his first and last names as two words and sometimes didn’t raise the pen from the paper so the signature looks like one 12-letter word. And with that knowledge comes a mission.
|
|
Consola is inspired by a zeal to keep forgeries off the market, a drive to feel close to the star whose music was the soundtrack of his life, and his admitted “fascination with handwriting.”
Consola’s expertise is valuable “because he is such a specialist on Elvis,” said Joe Orlando, president of PSA/DNA, a division of Collectors Universe, one of the leading authentication and grading services in the world.
One of his early purchases was a handwritten letter a fan received from Graceland, probably in the early 1960s, signed with Elvis’ name. “I didn’t know his handwriting that well,” Consola said. As he studied the letter, he began to suspect that it was a “secretarial,” written by a friend or assistant. (Fake - as shown right) - Secretarials are just one type of fake signature, and they can come with convincing stories.
The possibility of riches has attracted sophisticated criminal forgers. |
|
In 1999, Consola played a role in thwarting an international forgery ring that was trying to sell faked handwritten copies of Elvis lyrics, he said. “Keeping forgeries off the market has been a goal of mine, because they hurt the real collectors,” he said.
To hone his abilities, Consola has researched Elvis’ life and travels. He has met fans, friends, fellow collectors and dealers. He has visited places associated with Elvis, such as Sun Studio in Memphis and the star’s early homes. He has contributed to several books written about Elvis, becoming “somewhat of a historian on Elvis.”
By immersing himself in details of the star’s life, Consola said, “I think you do get to know him in a way, but I think the only people who really knew Elvis well were his immediate family and the guys who literally lived with him and traveled with him.”
When he touches an artifact or an autograph, Consola feels a connection.
“When you hold an autograph in your hand, somebody wrote that, whether it’s Roosevelt or Lincoln or Elvis Presley,” In the case of a letter, “they sat down with that paper, wrote that whole thing out, folded it up and mailed it. It’s a connection between you and that person. That connection isn’t physical; it is almost spiritual.”

'Elvis On Television' MRS or BOXCAR?: Several EIN readers have been confused by the two new releases announced for 'Elvis On Television'.
Understandably since the cover images are very similar!
Both products celebrate Elvis on TV from his first national introduction on the Dorsey Brothers ‘Stage Show’ in January 1956, through his appearances on other TV shows hosted by Milton Berle, Steve Allen and Ed Sullivan, to Elvis’ post-army appearance on The Frank Sinatra-Timex Show in May 1960.
The BOXCAR BOOK delves behind the scenes of each show documenting his arrival, the rehearsals and the shows themselves, all the way through to the Frank Sinatra-Timex Show in May 1960, Elvis' last television appearance for eight years.
Written by Gordon Minto, it is supported by scores of historical documents, memorabilia and hundreds of rare photographs - many of which have never before been published. This book will captivate the reader throughout, and is the most detailed document on the history of Elvis on Television from 1956-60.
The BOXCAR book is Hardcover and 400 pages
A "Coffee-table" sized book, dimensions: 26 x 3.5 x 32 cm
This large deluxe slip-case book is a similar format to the other impressive Boxcar publications. It will contain hundreds of stunning photos of Elvis' TV performances as huge coffee-table size images.

EIN contributor Ciscoking comments, The Las Vegas March 22, 1975 MS is by far the best concert from the season so although previously bootlegged the concert is an essential release. The April 1, Dinner Show is also a great addition with a fine song line-up and Elvis in a fantastic mood - the bonus songs were also very carefully chosen.
The April 1 concert was previously released on bootleg back in 2009 by Southern Comfort/Fort Baxter and it is an excellent show - see EIN review here.

UK Latest Album Chart: Elvis still hanging in the UK Top 100 this week.
'If I Can Dream' IICD is No.95 on the UK Album Chart for 20th May, 2016;
It is also 76 on the Album Sales Chart; 58 on the Physical Album Chart and 92 on the Scottish Album Chart.
It must be emphasised, yet again, that Elvis is not in the Top 100 Download or Streaming Charts. This is preventing him from keeping a higher chart position.

'Elvis Walks Home' - Another New film: Something a little different, a UK-Albania film co-production is underway in which an Elvis impersonator finds himself in the middle of a war zone.
The UK’s Film and Music Entertainment (F&ME) has joined forces with Albania’s Kkoci Productions and Zagreb’s Propeler Films on Elvis Walks Home, based on an original screenplay by Welsh author Jonathan Preece and directed by Fatmir Koci.
The shoot begins on August 15 in Albania and Bosnia. US actor Nick Shreli plays the lead role of Mickey, who gets a job entertaining British troops during the 1999 Balkans wars but finds himself in the middle of the battlefield – dressed as Elvis.
Other roles will be taken by Ndricim Xhepa, Amos Zaharia , Dritan Kastrati, Romir Zalla, Ergys Halili, Maradona Kodra.
Elvis Walks Home marks the second collaboration of Preece, Koci and Mike Downey of F&ME following Amsterdam Express, which was the first ever UK-Albania co-production.
F&ME has brought 12 active productions to Cannes this year and recently closed a sales deal with WIDE Management for DeDe, the debut feature of Mariam Khatchvani.
EIN suspects the Elvis impersonator won’t be looking like the real G.I. Presley! We wonder what Elvis would think about this particular movie concept!

Sixty years ago Elvis took the Twin Cities by storm: Sixty years ago May 13, 1956, Elvis Presley played his first concerts in Minnesota.
He played two concerts, an afternoon concert in St Paul City Auditorium plus an evening show in Minneapolis. "Elvis vibrated his hips so much, and the 3,000 customers squealed so insistently at the vibrations, it was impossible to hear him sing," wrote the Minneapolis Tribune and noted, "In moments of public passion Elvis clutched the microphone to his forehead. He ended up limp and sweating and loped off the stage half-staggering. The mob screamed and ran for him".
- photo below - Exhausted after his strenuous performance, Elvis Presley fell to his knees and received a neck rub from an old hometown buddy, Airman 3/C Edward Thornton of Tupelo, Mississippi, who at that time was stationed at Fort Snelling.

'Elvis & Nixon' "definitely worth watching": The media reviews are very mixed - as are the opinions of Elvis fans - but 'Elvis & Nixon' has received another positive review from the Victoria Advocate.
It includes .. "Two historical icons meet in the new comedy from director Liza Johnson that's based on an actual meeting between Elvis and President Nixon that secretly took place in the Oval Office on Dec. 21, 1970. This was before Nixon had the White House bugged so the script is a loose interpretation of how that encounter went down. Did I mention it's pretty funny?
There are many reasons why this absurd film is so charming, but first and foremost, it's the wonderful casting of Michael Shannon as Elvis and Kevin Spacey as Nixon, both consummate actors on top of their A-game who wouldn't be my first choice to play either role. The fact that apart from the clothing neither one really resembles Elvis nor Nixon (although Spacey at just the right angle bears a resemblance) gives the film wacky appeal but also the two actors play the roles without attempting to use a cliched accent and
believe it or not it works.
The film soars during the few minutes that Elvis and Nixon are together in the Oval Office where all presidential protocols go right out the window. Elvis shows off his karate moves and Nixon shows off his moon rock, obviously the two became BFFs.
"Elvis and Nixon" will definitely put a smile on your face and the film is worth watching just to see Shannon and Spacey take on these two iconic figures.
Three 1/2 stars out of five - click here to the full review if you want it.
It premieres in Australia at the Sydney Film Festival in June.

Jungle Room Sessions Special Release for 2017?: As EIN reported back in March, Sony Legacy senior vice-president John Jackson - and co-producer of the 60 CD box-set - announced that SONY were already working on a special release for 2017, the 40th anniversary of Elvis' untimely death.
Jackson noted, "We’ve got some interesting ideas for 2017. The 40th anniversary of some of the last recordings he made is coming up, so we’re toying with the idea of how to best present those. It’s my argument that he never lost it -- that he was never anything less than amazing. He was the greatest singer of all time, as far as I’m concerned, and was always trying to do his thing. Despite all the troubles he had in the '70s, including fights with the label, how they were promoting him and how they made him feel, he was still cutting great stuff. |
|
That’s a lot of what we’re talking about now."
As keen fans know there is close to one CD's worth of material that still remains officially unreleased from Elvis' last two recording sessions in Graceland's Jungle Room. These tracks include Bitter They Are Harder They Fall take 2, Moody Blue take 3, multiple takes of She Thinks I Still Care and Solitaire, The Last Farewell take 3, as well as material such as Moody Blue take 10 with Strings Overdub, certainly enough to make a fascinating set for Elvis collectors.
Now two recent photos have been posted showing the TCB Band plus Elvis legacy producer Ernst Jorgensen and John Jackson in the Sam Phillips studio as well as the Jungle Room itself. This is surely part of the work involved for this new 2017 release.
The TCB band were also in Sam Phillips Madison avenue recording studio working on this "secret" project. Sam |

Philips granddaughter Haley Phillips is seen in the photo above standing in front of Ernst Jorgensen.

Layng Martine recalls writing 'Way Down': Layng Martine Jr. remembers being in seventh grade and hearing one of Elvis Presley's earliest singles on the radio. "It changed my entire life," he says. Two decades later, the Nashville songwriter wrote the hit for Elvis, recorded in the Jungle room, and which ended up being the final single released before his death in 1977.
Layng Martine: The day I wrote 'Way Down' I went in and played it for Ray Stevens, which I did with every new song. He said, "Layng, I love that song! There's nothing going on right now, let's call the band and make a demo of that." We went in and made a terrific demo of it, and the bass part that J.D. Sumner sang on the Elvis record was sung by Ray Stevens, who is a phenomenal bass singer. I played the darn thing for everybody I could think of. I couldn't believe that nobody even held it overnight. Then one day, I was sitting in an office waiting to play songs for some producer, and Bob Beckham, a very famous publisher, said, "Layng, you work your ass off ... do you have anything for Elvis?"
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Just the question, "Do you have anything for Elvis?" Even if you didn't, I would have lied.
|
|
Bob Beckham had a direct line to Elvis via Felton Jarvis and about a week later we gets a call from Felton Jarvis who says, "Elvis is gonna go bonkers for this song."
... So then, nothing happens for months. I don't hear anything at all. No phone calls, nothing. It's like four months later when Beckham's secretary calls me and she says, "Layng, I think Elvis has already recorded this song." I said, "That's impossible, I would know." ... So she checks and calls me back and says, "Yeah, on Oct. 30, in the Jungle Room at Graceland, he recorded 'Way Down.' " I said, "Oh, God, that's incredible." In this fury, I go racing home in my tragic little Volkswagen. I told my wife, "Elvis recorded my song!"
That summer, it comes out ... we go to Rhode Island, and I'm playing tennis, and I get this call from a promoter and he says, "Layng, I just got the advance numbers from Billboard, and your song goes to No. 1 next week." I go, "God, that's unbelievable." Three days later, literally, I'm on the same tennis court, and this same woman comes out of this little shack and says "Layng, I have a phone call." I pick up the phone, and it's Rose Palermo, my attorney, she breaks the terrible news, "Layng, are you near a TV? Elvis just died."

Coco Palms Demolition moves closer: In Hawaii last week it was reported that Coco Palms developers have secured funding for demolition.
John Pang, a representative for Coco Palms Hui, LLC, told the Kauai County Planning Commission, “We have now received confirmation for receipt of the funds necessary to acquire the property, as well as the funds for demolition and to prepare construction plans”.
Private Capital will foot the bill for demolition of the resort, which was destroyed during Hurricane Iniki. The final price of construction is almost $3.5 million.
Coco Palms officials want to breathe new life into the resort. Once the closing papers are in order, demolition will start immediately, Pang added.
The current plan is to open the hotel during the first quarter of 2018.

Kauai has always been EIN's Sanja Meegin's favourite of the Hawaiian Islands, primarily because of its unspoiled majestic natural beauty, but also because of its Elvis ties.
The recent news that Hawaii's Coco Palms Resort will be completely renovated made her extremely eager to see this paradise where Elvis sang The Hawaiian Wedding song whilst floating up the lagoon on a floral canoe with co-star Joan Blackman.

Bad Nauheim Elvis European Festival Trailer: Please see this new promotional video Bad Nauheim Elvis European Festival, capturing what is special about Elvis and Elvis fans. As Vladimir Scheiermann told EIN, I spent all my youth in a small German town called Bad Nauheim. As many of you may know it’s the same town Elvis lived in during his two years of military service. Ever since the early 2000s the town hosts the annual European Elvis Festival to honor him and his music. For me it used to be a great summer adventure, a window into another time with beautiful cars, dresses, rock’n’roll music and lovely people.
So I felt it was about time that someone captures the essence of this Festival in a little shortfilm-style trailer, which I tried to do last summer together with my fellow director-friend Sascha Kuznia and a lot of amazing festivalgoers. Here’s our very personal look at the European Elvis Festival and the people that ultimately make it what it is.

They are the leading animal advocacy organization, seeking a humane world for people and animals alike, combating large-scale cruelties such as puppy mills, animal fighting, factory farming, seal slaughter, horse cruelty, captive hunts and the wildlife trade.

Bruce Springsteen And Elvis: It was 40 years ago this week, April 29, 1976, that Bruce Springsteen tried to get to meet his idol Elvis Presley at his Graceland mansion. Of course things were very different back in 1976 since Springsteen wasn’t yet the superstar he would later become. Springsteen has told the story that he had hoped to pass on his brand new song 'Fire' for Elvis to record but things didn't go quite as planned.
In high spirits Springsteen and guitarist Steven Van Zandt took a late-night cab ride to Graceland a few hours after their "Born To Run" Memphis concert. As they spotted lights on at Graceland both Springsteen and Van Zandt jumped the wall and ran up to the front door to try and meet their idol. It was however 3am in the morning!
Unfortunately for them they had been spotted by security who told them that Elvis wasn't home and was working in Lake Tahoe. Security then escorted him and Van Zandt back outside the main gates.
Over the years Springsteen has told this story in concert, often serving as a introduction to a cover of one of Elvis' songs. "I couldn’t imagine anyone not wanting to be Elvis Presley."
"I used to wonder what I would have said if I had knocked on the door and if Elvis had come to the door. Because it really wasn’t

'Still Stirring Passions' New Import: The MxF label will soon release "Still Stirring Passions'' featuring the unreleased Vegas March 21, 1975 Dinner Show.
The publicity notes.. After the problematic October 1974 tour, almost five months of rest Elvis was back to the Hilton a little bit overweight, but stronger respect the previous year and overall in higher spirit. For this reason his performance is relaxed and superb like many critics noted…, still at the top if his ability he deliveries short shows as usually, but very intense updating the show with more contemporary repertoire. Elvis was very energetic on stage, bringing back his best seventy rocker like Burning Love, introducing his latest single Promised land..,
The sound is very good for an Audience recording, the result a pretty dynamic tape with a great definition of the background music.
It comes in a deluxe DIGIPACK, containing a collection of live photographs newspapers clip and memorabilia.
EIN NOTE: This concert has been previously available on cdr - (as have other MxF re-releases). The quality of the cdr is pretty poor. We advise you to check the audio quality before buying.

News from earlier in the week ... |
Prince RIP - & Elvis: Prince, the singer / songwriter sadly died last Thursday at his home in Chanhassen, Minn. A man of incredible talent and who was touring only the previous week, was only 57.
Prince was a virtuoso who led the way in the mid-1980s as an architect of funk and R&B in a similar way that Elvis did in chnaging the face of pop in the fifties. Prince showed a flamboyance on stage in his stage outfits, energy and the "shock-of-the-new" that was only comparable to what Elvis could achieve with his own devoted audiences.
A seven-time Grammy winner, Prince had massive Top 10 hits like 'Little Red Corvette', 'When Doves Cry', 'Kiss' and '1999'. He also won an Academy Award for his fiilm 'Purple Rain'.
Prince was seriously influenced by artists like James Brown and Little Richard, but it also turns out that Elvis was another of his influences. Prince's former manager, Bob Cavallo recently commented that when he was young "Prince wanted to be Elvis."
Prince performed a quick nod to Elvis with 'Jailhouse Rock' on German's MTV show while in 2009 Prince rocked the house with a funked-up version of Elvis' 'All Shook Up' at the Montreux Jazz Festival. - RIP Prince Rogers Nelson.

'Inland Empire' magazine Elvis Cover: As part of Inland Empire Magazine’s 40th anniversary this year, they are looking back at notable events that rocked the region. They feature an article about Elvis Presley in 1972 when he rocked out the swing auditorium in San Bernardino. Sadly the front cover photo is 15 years out-of-date!
"Though his show was typical of his Vegas show that he performed at the International Hotel, it didn’t matter to his loyal subjects. Elvis' voice and physique were in A-plus form. He ripped through concert standards such as “Polk Salad Annie,” crooned to crowd favorite “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” and did a couple of religious numbers with the gospel group J.D. Sumner and The Stamps. Elvis was live in San Berdoo! Old ladies screamed.
His band and entourage the Sweet Inspirations, legendary guitar hero James Burton provided a full sound that could not be duplicated by the typical four-man rock act. It was a show truly becoming of a King. The crowd responded as if seeing him for the first time. Bedlam broke out among the thousands of fans.
After about 90 minutes, despite fans calling for more, Elvis left the auditorium for the San Bernardino Hilton, about $60,000 richer. I was a poor college kid. I went to Del Taco. What a Sunday night!"

Elvis Presley’s Irish roots proven by legal document: Once again it seems the Irish are searching for their own Elvis connection. An 18th-century court document, proving Elvis’ Irish ties, apparently shows that his ancestor fled Leinster’s mean streets “in great dread” for a quieter life in America.
The document, from 1775, will be auctioned in a Dublin saleroom on May 14th, concerns legal proceedings brought by William Presley, the singer’s great-great-great-great-grandfather.
Originally from the townland of Stranakelly near Shillelagh, Co Wicklow, Presley, a farmer, claimed he had been assaulted by a group of men in neighbouring Co Carlow.
The magistrate agreed to list the case for a further hearing.
It is not known what happened next in the court, but Presley emigrated to the US later that year - with his son Andrew - and first settled in New Orleans.
The document is in Whyte’s Auctioneers Eclectic Collector sale on May 14th and has an estimate of €500-700.
Three years ago, genealogists discovered Elvis Presley’s link to William Presley.
“Elvis’s great-great-great-great-grandfather left Ireland after being attacked . . . this document proves the link and explains why Elvis was born in America.”
According to the catalogue notes, William Presley later moved to Tennessee, where he died in 1802.
His granddaughter Rosella never married but had several children and one of these was a son called Jesse Presley - who would later become Elvis' grandfather.

'When the King Held Court' ESPN short-doco: ESPN 30 for 30 short documentaries present 'When The King Held Court' covering Elvis’ love of racquetball.
The name Elvis Presley evokes a lot of memories: the music, the hips, the hair, the screaming fans. But one thing about “The King of Rock and Roll” that few commoners saw was his passion for racquetball. In this 30 for 30 Short laced with animation and interviews, viewers will learn why the legendary entertainer got involved in the sport, how he almost rescued it with a chain of Presley’s Center Courts and what the elaborate court he had built at Graceland looked like. “The King” died on August 16, 1977, but perhaps he died happy. He had been playing racquetball that morning. Directed by Palmer Holton
|
|
EIN Note: With no real footage of Elvis playing racquetball it disappointingly features very "Stereotype" fat-Elvis animation- so beware before viewing. It does however features interviews with Elvis' sports physician and others involved in the "Presley Centre Courts" business deal as well as details about the at Graceland. Sadly none of Elvis' close friends such as Red West or Marty Lacker were interviewed for the film.

'Elvis & Nixon' Bad Review: After the earlier rather positive Variety review (see below) the on-line Collider site gives 'Elvis & Nixon' a more-than-expected stinker review...It includes ...
... The strangeness in the meeting request is what Liza Johnson’s film is mostly concerned with. But the only area where Elvis & Nixon actually gels is the extended period where Presley (Michael Shannon) and Nixon (Kevin Spacey) get to trade wits and wisdom as men of power. There is too much lead up to their meeting. I understand the desire to get to the question of why did this meeting happen?, but Elvis has the opportunity to sell Nixon on that in the room. Johnson’s film races through a bunch of back-story involving Presley’s associate, Jerry Schilling (Alex Pettyfer) who left Memphis for a job in Hollywood on the Paramount studio lot. Jerry is trying to have a normal life, get married, and not be pulled back in by the allure of Presley’s promises as he accompanies Presley to help get him badge meetings in Washington, D.C.
Jerry is important to the story, but in trying to blow up that one photo, the canvas gets large enough that it rambles seemingly forever before we get to the event we want to see: Elvis and Nixon discussing their similarities and differences. When Elvis and Nixon do finally meet, and the obnoxious sitcom styled musical score no longer pulls us along with jangled promises of wackiness, the film slows, and the actors we want to see act against one another get to do just that.
Because the meeting in the Oval Office is so delightful, it’s unfortunate that all the satellite stories were also put into orbit (aided again by a SNL parody-worthy swingin’ score). Elvis had a very long career and this is a very particular moment in it. Having him eat donuts with (and win over) black people who call him a thief has more to do with directly addressing modern commentary about appropriation, and has |

very little to do with the story in question, unless it’s spun into Elvis’ idea that America is too fractured to function.
Despite some great moments between Shannon and Spacey, Elvis and Nixon being together
in the highest office in the land. After watching Elvis & Nixon, I still want more of that. In a turn of a future presidential phrase: it’s the meeting, stupid.

The LA Times similarly states "this disappointing movie prefers to smirk its way through an oddball slice of history than mine it for something wryly illuminating."

Three New FTD Releases for May: FTD have announced their next three releases for May 2016, a Classic Album, double 1975 soundboard and special King Creole vinyl release.
1 - "Elvis" ('68 Comeback) is finally being released as an FTD "Classic Album".
The first disc includes the original album plus the expected Bonus tracks. Disc 2 contains,
Somewhat disappointingly this includes the material previously released on the excellent FTD 'Let Yourself Go' but also includes 9 previously unreleased tracks.
'Let Yourself Go' however was edited into a "making of the NBC Special" audio documentary (see EIN's detailed review here).
Now we get a more thorough look into the session tapes.

2 - 'LAS VEGAS 1975' - double-pack soundboard concert release.
The album features two of Elvis' best concerts from his Las Vegas March/April 1975 season. |
|
The March 22 concert is considered one of the best concerts of the season and was first released on the Fort Baxter bootleg 'A Profile Vol. 2'.
Elvis is in fine voice and the excellent set-list includes Big Boss Man, It's Midnight, Promised Land, My Boy as well as the one-off 'You're The Reason I'm Living' (as previously issued on the 'Live In Las Vegas' BMG box-set)
|
|
This will be a great double-pack from FTD.

'Elvis & Nixon' Film Review: 'Elvis & Nixon' is playing at the Tribeca Film festival and Variety have posted a rather positive review noting, "Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey hilariously reenact one of history's most surreal blind dates."
.. While the film's sense of humor takes some getting used to, the sheer spaciness of director Liza Johnson’s stranger-than-fiction political satire ultimately proves its greatest asset, simultaneously demystifying two 20th-century icons — one the most powerful, the other the most popular man in the Western world at the time — in a loony Amazon Studios release a little too eccentric to reach the audience it fully deserves.
Normally, the fact that Michael Shannon bears almost no resemblance to Elvis Presley might be an obstacle to a film that pokes fun at the pop star’s desire to be deputized as a "federal agent-at-large" as in those days, Elvis was almost distractingly pretty and a far cry from Shannon’s lurching scarecrow look. But then, Kevin Spacey could hardly be considered a dead-ringer for Richard Nixon either, and yet, both actors manage to |
|
delve past superficial impersonation and deliver a fresh understanding of what makes these men tick.
Still, their performances take some getting used to, and some audiences may never get past the impression that they’re watching a clownishly miscast caricature of the blind date immortalized by the National Archives’ most requested image. Ideally, by this point in film, we’ve forgotten how little either he or Spacey resembles their characters, reveling in the sheer volume of unscripted humor both actors manage to add via body language alone.
Elvis clearly has control of the situation, and though it wasn’t so common to have entertainers grace the White House, a mere decade later, a former B-movie actor would be sitting in Nixon’s chair.
Johnson isn’t the sort of director to let style get in the way, occasionally sacrificing elegance and sheer shot-to-shot continuity in order to privilege her actors’ best takes. But she understands comic timing, as well as the broader-view absurdity the material demands, and though her protagonists both take one another incredibly seriously, it will be hard for anyone who sees "Elvis & Nixon" to show such figures the same degree of respect going forward.

Elvis' Percussionist coming to Europe: Another great new addition to the show 'An Evening with Elvis' Friends and Original Musicians' that will be doing 14 concerts in Sweden, Finland and Holland in a couple of weeks.
The show includes Elvis' 'On Stage' drummer BOB LANNING, as well as his 70s bodyguard DAVE HEBLER. (shown below with Elvis)
The production crew behind the show has now added another name, percussionist EDDIE GRAHAM, (right, with Elvis) who played percussion for Elvis at almost 200 Vegas shows in 1969 - 1972. Eddie remembers Elvis as a gifted entertainer who always gave his best, and who was kind and generous towards the people he worked with. You can hear Eddie's percussion (Elvis sometimes called it 'kettle drums') on albums like 'On Stage' and 'That's The Way It Is'. You can see Eddie in the movie a couple of times, for instance in the Vegas rehearsal sequences.
|
|
Looking back at his association with Elvis today, Graham says: "I come from a Jazz background, and when Elvis started making headlines I was not interested in the "new" rock n' roll. I was not a fan. I didn't see what the fuss was about Elvis shaking his hips. Then later, when I was asked to step in and play Elvis' show in Las Vegas, I got a totally different perspective. I realized his talent and his connection to black Southern Gospel music. Man, it was an epiphany. Watching him work and his effortless singing gave me a respect for him that I didn't share with other "rockers" of the day. Little Richard and the likes to me were all show and short on talent. Elvis was just the opposite. By the way, I was NOT initially a fan of the Beatles. Remember, I was playing pure Jazz at the time. Now I have broadened my tastes and realize the contributions of these groundbreaking artists".
This tour marks Eddie's first appearance at Elvis shows in Europe.

"Elvis- I'm Leavin'" Elvis Folk/ Country RSD Release: Sony Legacy announces their Elvis vinyl release for Record Store Day 2016, celebrated worldwide on Saturday, April 16, 2015.
The Elvis Presley - I'm Leavin': Elvis Folk - Country - 1LP 12" Black Vinyl compilation album brings together the very best recordings of Elvis Presley's work in the Folk and Country genres from 1966-1973. The collection includes masters from Elvis' sessions at RCA Victor's Studio B in Nashville in May 1971, a period from which material penned by several folk writers surfaced spontaneously amid Presley's gospel and holiday recordings. This anthology finds Elvis in an introspective mood, masterfully creating definitive versions of iconic compositions that resonated personally with him.

Vernon Presley - Born 100 Years Ago: Elvis' father Vernon Presley was born 100 years ago, on April 10th 1916 in Fulton, Mississippi - he was the oldest of five children. Vernon would meet Elvis' mother Gladys at the First Assembly of God Church in Tupelo in 1933 and they were married soon after on June 17, in Ponotoc County, Mississippi. Vernon was only 17 at the time.
After Gladys died in 1958 Vernon would remarry to "Dee" Stanley in June 1960 - but would later divorce.
Vernon would outlive his son, but would die soon after of heart failure on June 26, 1979.
In a 1978 interview Vernon said, "My love for my son began even before he was born on January 8, 1935. At that time there was almost nobody poorer than my wife Gladys and me.
But we were thrilled and excited when we learned that we were going to be parents. I was only 18 years old, but throughout Gladys’ pregnancy it never occurred to me that I wouldn‘t be able to take care of her and the baby"

"Every album Elvis ever made, and then some": More good US publicity for the new 60CD box-set via the LA Times & associates. It notes,
... The new box set follows Sony Legacy's release of every track Presley recorded officially on the 30-CD box set "The Complete Elvis Presley Masters" in 2010 which presented Elvis recording career in chronological order.
"His masters are well represented everywhere," said SONY's John Jackson, "but the idea here was to have all the original albums in tip-top shape for digital, for downloading and for CD, rather than just doing a few at a time. This is the first time all the album masters have been up to the same quality at one time. We've gone back and done them all over again, from scratch, for this package for the hi-res audio providers, for the 'Mastered for iTunes' program, for Spotify and all the streaming services. This is not a piecemeal exercise."
The CD set, which is selling for around US$250 on Amazon - about $4 per CD - is timed to coincide with the 60th |
|
anniversary of the original release of Presley's first RCA album, "Elvis Presley." It includes a 300-page small-format book with pages devoted to each release, including song titles, songwriter and musician credits and other relevant archival information.
"What really comes across, more than just the music, is the marketing and the promotion of Elvis as a famous person. You see how sometimes they would include a new poster: Here's a picture of what he's up to in Germany [during his two-year stint in the Army], here's a fold-down calendar with the date circled of when he's coming home from Germany, here's a picture of him in concert for all the people around the world who couldn't go see him perform live.
"Everything was one large idea to the Col Parker and RCA Records. Sometimes the music wound up suffering, but he continued to come back by recording great tracks along the way. Elvis was always looking to record songs he liked, even though, especially early on, the fare offered to Presley was drastically limited by Parker's insistence that songwriters share their publishing royalties with Presley and Parker's music publishing firm.

'The Elvis Files Vol. 7 1974-1975' Book Review: I truly think by now that reviews of these beautiful hard-cover Elvis
Files books are almost unnecessary. After six sensational volumes of the
Elvis Files over the past 5 years it is hard to believe that fans would
waver on whether to purchase this newest volume that focuses on Elvis
in 1974 and 1975.
In the two years featured here Elvis performed close to 260 concerts including seven mind-numbingly repetitive seasons at the Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe casinos. By now it is usually accepted that touring had become more of a chore to Elvis although he could still put on some high calibre performances.
While the vast majority of the photos from this period are basically candid photos, the book features well over one hundred pages of stunning full size colour photos.
As always the real pleasure of this book is a chance to reference the reviews and articles from the time along with stunning photos while listening to the particular concerts,
no other series of Elvis photo-books comes close.

NOW UPDATED - 'The Elusive Norman Taurog' EIN Spotlight: Who was Norman Taurog? - It is a legitimate question because he remains one of the most elusive characters in Elvis Presley’s remarkable career. Even in Starmaker, the memoirs of Hal B. Wallis, for whom Taurog produced six Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis movies and three Presley flicks, he seems a bit player.
Taurog is not the kind of director to be revered at film school - and film author David Quinlan describes his Presley films as "the only dull spots" in the filmmaker’s career.

'The West Coast Tour '76' FTD CD Review: FTD have released their second 1976 double-set in a row, this time featuring two shows from Elvis' November tour, San Francisco, November 29, 1976 and Anaheim's Closing Show from the following day. 1976 is not an easy Elvis live-in-concert year to review. There were no major set-list changes, no dramatic "emotional roller-coaster" of 1974 and no high-flying "Huntsville" 1975 excitements.
By late November 1976 however Elvis had become involved with new love Ginger Alden. As fans are well aware Elvis’ final 1976 tour of December is well known for having the most energetic and exciting concerts from this tiring and lacklustre year, however back in November Elvis was already more energised, losing weight and excited to be with Ginger.

'ELVIS LIVE in the 50's The Complete Concert Recordings' Review: The new MRS box-set 'Elvis Live in the 50’s The Complete Concert Recordings' was publicised as the ultimate tribute to Elvis Presley documenting his shows from the 1950’s. The 3 CD’s represent for the first time ever, the release of the complete collection of archival live concert recordings by Elvis Presley in the 1950’s. All of the 82 tracks included have been painstakingly remastered and restored.
The 172 page book is a chronological photo journey following Elvis from the very first to the very last shows performed in the 1950’s. It contains linear notes that includes every show listing (now updated) and is accompanied by hundreds of photographs many of which are rare and unpublished.
The book includes tour details (date, town, venue) and all photos are annotated. The customary range of press clippings is a powerful record of 1950s publicity ads, ticket stubs, receipts and show reviews.
Go here as EIN's Nigel Patterson and Piers Beagley provide an in-depth review of this new MRS release along with some scans from the book showcasing Elvis in action.

"Elvis Presley Taking Care Of Business - In A Flash" New FTD Book/CD Combo: Focusing on Elvis in late 1970 and early 1971, "Elvis Presley Taking Care Of Business - In A Flash" is the new FTD Book/CD combo scheduled to be published in May / June by Flaming Star/FTD.
The 430-page illustrated hardback book will detail Elvis’ personal life and public career between October 1970 and January 1971 and is produced by Pål Granlund, David English and Paul Richardson.
The book will also feature concert material from Elvis' November 1970 tour. The possibility of the Rick Rennie audience recorded tape of Elvis live in Portland, November 11, 1970 has been mentioned however the audio content is still to be finalised.
Just five years after discovering Elvis Presley in 1960, Pål Granlund established the Flaming Star Fan Club in Norway. His activities with this well-respected organisation gave him the opportunity not only to see Elvis perform live over fifty times, but also to meet him on five occasions. In more recent years, Pål has published some of the best books on Elvis’ career and output. These include Stein Erik Skaar’s Elvis: The Concert Years, 1969–1977 (1997), Trevor Simpson’s three Best Of British volumes (2013–15) and, in 2016, 'How RCA Brought Elvis To Europe' by Sigbjørn Stabursvik and Hans Otto Engvold.
British author David English has been collaborating with Pål Granlund on multiple Elvis books since 2012. A fan since he was |
|
twelve-years-old, David English has helped produce some of the very finest illustrated studies of specific events in Elvis’ post-Army career. In order of publication, these include 'Welcome Home Elvis 1960' (2012), From Memphis To Hollywood (2012), Summer Of ’61 (2013), Memphis To Nashville ’61 (2014) and Rock Around The Bloch! (2015). Taking Care Of Business: In A Flash represents David’s first foray into Elvis’ later years.
The third person involved in 'Taking Care Of Business: In A Flash' is Paul Richardson. Since 2009, Paul has used his research and writing skills – he has a master’s degree in English from Oxford and a doctorate from Durham – to good effect by contributing regular reviews, essays and interviews to the quarterly magazine, 'Elvis: The Man & His Music' as well as editing volumes of Erik Lorentzen's 'Elvis Files' series. Paul has also collaborated with David and Pål on 2014's 'Memphis To Nashville ’61', and further editorial support last year during the production of 'Rock Around The Bloch!' and 'Change Of Habit'.
Together, Pål, David and Paul are now preparing to deliver the ultimate release on a key period in Elvis’ life and career October 1970 to January 1971.

'Live A Little, Love A Little' FTD Soundtrack Review: 'Live A Little, Love A Little' was Elvis’ 28th movie which at last featured somewhat more of an adult theme.
Billy Strange was the MGM session producer with new musicians from LA’s famous “Wrecking Crew” (Beach Boys, Phil Spector etc). The session was booked at Western Recorders and for the first time Elvis would be recording with a live full-size orchestra.
In a fascinating coincidence in the same month that Sony released 'If I Can Dream' with an overdubbed orchestra, FTD quietly released a genuine studio session of Elvis recording “live” with a full 40-piece orchestra! So what does the FTD CD give collectors? How does Elvis work in the studio with a full orchestra?
In 1968 Elvis was in great voice, there were four quality songs and all backed by a live orchestra. There was a genuine effort on the movie soundtrack to back a movie in which Elvis just couldn’t seem to get a smile off his face.
Go here as EIN contributor Ian Garfield examines this new release, as well as looking carefully at each of the four songs take by take to see what this CD has to offer.

Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage!
The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
Go here to our detailed 'TIGER MAN' spotlight as EIN's Piers Beagley puts in the hard yards to check the facts from the fantasy .

FTD "What now, What next, What If? PART TWO ": The FTD label has been doing an excellent job at looking at the recording anthology of Elvis Presley and releasing every significant LP or recording session on a 1CD or 2CD ‘Classic Album’ version.
However, as noted with the recent "ELVIS" second LP release and the Christmas album, there are less and less outtakes and studio sessions left in the vaults.
With our new article “What now, What next, What If?” EIN contributor Ian Garfield examines exactly how FTD might present their future 'Classic Album' releases.
This second article covers the possible releases Speedway; Live a Little, Love a Little; Charro, The Trouble with Girls and Change of Habit.
