Welcome to the "Elvis Information Network", home to the best news, reviews, interviews, Elvis photos & in-depth articles about the King of Rock & Roll, Elvis Aaron Presley...
The latest on www.ElvisInfoNet.com:
Prince RIP - & Elvis: Prince, the singer / songwriter sadly died last Thursday at his home in Chanhassen, Minn. A man of incredible talent and who was touring only the previous week, was only 57.
Prince was a virtuoso who led the way in the mid-1980s as an architect of funk and R&B in a similar way that Elvis did in chnaging the face of pop in the fifties. Prince showed a flamboyance on stage in his stage outfits, energy and the "shock-of-the-new" that was only comparable to what Elvis could achieve with his own devoted audiences.
A seven-time Grammy winner, Prince had massive Top 10 hits like 'Little Red Corvette', 'When Doves Cry', 'Kiss' and '1999'. He also won an Academy Award for his fiilm 'Purple Rain'.
Prince was seriously influenced by artists like James Brown and Little Richard, but it also turns out that Elvis was another of his influences. Prince's former manager, Bob Cavallo recently commented that when he was young "Prince wanted to be Elvis."
Prince performed a quick nod to Elvis with 'Jailhouse Rock' on German's MTV show while in 2009 Prince rocked the house with a funked-up version of Elvis' 'All Shook Up' at the Montreux Jazz Festival. - RIP Prince Rogers Nelson.

'Inland Empire' magazine Elvis Cover: As part of Inland Empire Magazine’s 40th anniversary this year, they are looking back at notable events that rocked the region. They feature an article about Elvis Presley in 1972 when he rocked out the swing auditorium in San Bernardino. Sadly the front cover photo is 15 years out-of-date!
"Though his show was typical of his Vegas show that he performed at the International Hotel, it didn’t matter to his loyal subjects. Elvis' voice and physique were in A-plus form. He ripped through concert standards such as “Polk Salad Annie,” crooned to crowd favorite “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” and did a couple of religious numbers with the gospel group J.D. Sumner and The Stamps. Elvis was live in San Berdoo! Old ladies screamed.
His band and entourage the Sweet Inspirations, legendary guitar hero James Burton provided a full sound that could not be duplicated by the typical four-man rock act. It was a show truly becoming of a King. The crowd responded as if seeing him for the first time. Bedlam broke out among the thousands of fans.
After about 90 minutes, despite fans calling for more, Elvis left the auditorium for the San Bernardino Hilton, about $60,000 richer. I was a poor college kid. I went to Del Taco. What a Sunday night!"

Elvis Presley’s Irish roots proven by legal document: Once again it seems the Irish are searching for their own Elvis connection. An 18th-century court document, proving Elvis’ Irish ties, apparently shows that his ancestor fled Leinster’s mean streets “in great dread” for a quieter life in America.
The document, from 1775, will be auctioned in a Dublin saleroom on May 14th, concerns legal proceedings brought by William Presley, the singer’s great-great-great-great-grandfather.
Originally from the townland of Stranakelly near Shillelagh, Co Wicklow, Presley, a farmer, claimed he had been assaulted by a group of men in neighbouring Co Carlow.
The magistrate agreed to list the case for a further hearing.
It is not known what happened next in the court, but Presley emigrated to the US later that year - with his son Andrew - and first settled in New Orleans.
The document is in Whyte’s Auctioneers Eclectic Collector sale on May 14th and has an estimate of €500-700.
Three years ago, genealogists discovered Elvis Presley’s link to William Presley.
“Elvis’s great-great-great-great-grandfather left Ireland after being attacked . . . this document proves the link and explains why Elvis was born in America.”
According to the catalogue notes, William Presley later moved to Tennessee, where he died in 1802.
His granddaughter Rosella never married but had several children and one of these was a son called Jesse Presley - who would later become Elvis' grandfather.

'When the King Held Court' ESPN short-doco: ESPN 30 for 30 short documentaries present 'When The King Held Court' covering Elvis’ love of racquetball.
The name Elvis Presley evokes a lot of memories: the music, the hips, the hair, the screaming fans. But one thing about “The King of Rock and Roll” that few commoners saw was his passion for racquetball. In this 30 for 30 Short laced with animation and interviews, viewers will learn why the legendary entertainer got involved in the sport, how he almost rescued it with a chain of Presley’s Center Courts and what the elaborate court he had built at Graceland looked like. “The King” died on August 16, 1977, but perhaps he died happy. He had been playing racquetball that morning. Directed by Palmer Holton
|
|
EIN Note: With no real footage of Elvis playing racquetball it disappointingly features very "Stereotype" fat-Elvis animation- so beware before viewing. It does however features interviews with Elvis' sports physician and others involved in the "Presley Centre Courts" business deal as well as details about the at Graceland. Sadly none of Elvis' close friends such as Red West or Marty Lacker were interviewed for the film.

'Elvis & Nixon' Bad Review: After the earlier rather positive Variety review (see below) the on-line Collider site gives 'Elvis & Nixon' a more-than-expected stinker review...It includes ...
... The strangeness in the meeting request is what Liza Johnson’s film is mostly concerned with. But the only area where Elvis & Nixon actually gels is the extended period where Presley (Michael Shannon) and Nixon (Kevin Spacey) get to trade wits and wisdom as men of power. There is too much lead up to their meeting. I understand the desire to get to the question of why did this meeting happen?, but Elvis has the opportunity to sell Nixon on that in the room. Johnson’s film races through a bunch of back-story involving Presley’s associate, Jerry Schilling (Alex Pettyfer) who left Memphis for a job in Hollywood on the Paramount studio lot. Jerry is trying to have a normal life, get married, and not be pulled back in by the allure of Presley’s promises as he accompanies Presley to help get him badge meetings in Washington, D.C.
Jerry is important to the story, but in trying to blow up that one photo, the canvas gets large enough that it rambles seemingly forever before we get to the event we want to see: Elvis and Nixon discussing their similarities and differences. When Elvis and Nixon do finally meet, and the obnoxious sitcom styled musical score no longer pulls us along with jangled promises of wackiness, the film slows, and the actors we want to see act against one another get to do just that.
Because the meeting in the Oval Office is so delightful, it’s unfortunate that all the satellite stories were also put into orbit (aided again by a SNL parody-worthy swingin’ score). Elvis had a very long career and this is a very particular moment in it. Having him eat donuts with (and win over) black people who call him a thief has more to do with directly addressing modern commentary about appropriation, and has |
|
very little to do with the story in question, unless it’s spun into Elvis’ idea that America is too fractured to function.
Despite some great moments between Shannon and Spacey, Elvis and Nixon being together
in the highest office in the land. After watching Elvis & Nixon, I still want more of that. In a turn of a future presidential phrase: it’s the meeting, stupid.
Grade: C

The LA Times similarly states "this disappointing movie prefers to smirk its way through an oddball slice of history than mine it for something wryly illuminating."

Elvis Helped Make Sydney, Australias's music Scene Come Alive: Looking back at 185 years of Sydney newspapers Bernard Zuel reports. He never made it here but you can blame Elvis Presley and his hips for creating Sydney's music scene, its music coverage in the media, and its holy places that would stretch from the surf clubs of the northern beaches and beer barns of the outer west to the Opera House and scores of inner city rooms.
While supper clubs and Kings Cross nightclubs had put on shows for jazz groups and the occasional crooner, and Johnny Ray had brought bobbysoxers to tears at the Sydney Stadium, it was rock'n'roll which transformed all of Sydney.
Amateur enthusiasts, and soon enough those fast talking, financially "adroit" promoters saw the demand and the money possible in a teenage market inspired by the sound and vision of Presley. They opened up Masonic halls, surf lifesaving clubs and finally, pubs and RSLs, to the sounds of dancing fans and ringing tills.
The boom years of pub rock, disco and underground jazz in the 1970s was built on those groundbreakers a decade and a half earlier – just as the reputation pub rock king Billy Thorpe had for seriously loud shows was made by bursting not just ear drums but, on one infamous occasion in the late '60s, a fish tank in a Kings Cross venue.
Much as the recently demolished/soon to be replaced |
|
Entertainment Centre dwarf the city's more modest venues of the city, at the dawn of the live music circuit it was the Sydney Stadium at Rushcutters Bay, that was the peak.
It was here most of the big names , including Frank Sinatra, had to play and be judged by critics and the public. Its place in Sydney music history really was cemented when the Beatles played there in 1964.
The Opera House would open nine years later, but the first artist to perform there didn't wait for the walls to go up. Unionist, activist and people's champion, Paul Robeson, in 1960 famously beat everyone to the venue that would eventually allow rock, jazz and electronic to sit alongside orchestral and operatic works, by performing for the workers on site.
Today Robeson might play the boutique City Recital Hall or the tiny Vanguard. Thorpe could return to crank it up at the Metro and Enmore theatres. Elvis might not get there, but the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper will likely be up the back, taking notes.

Three New FTD Releases for May: FTD have announced their next three releases for May 2016, a Classic Album, double 1975 soundboard and special King Creole vinyl release.
1 - "Elvis" ('68 Comeback) is finally being released as an FTD "Classic Album".
The first disc includes the original album plus the expected Bonus tracks. Disc 2 contains,
Somewhat disappointingly this includes the material previously released on the excellent FTD 'Let Yourself Go' but also includes 9 previously unreleased tracks.
'Let Yourself Go' however was edited into a "making of the NBC Special" audio documentary (see EIN's detailed review here).
Now we get a more thorough look into the session tapes.

2 - 'LAS VEGAS 1975' - double-pack soundboard concert release.
The album features two of Elvis' best concerts from his Las Vegas March/April 1975 season. |
|
The March 22 concert is considered one of the best concerts of the season and was first released on the Fort Baxter bootleg 'A Profile Vol. 2'.
Elvis is in fine voice and the excellent set-list includes Big Boss Man, It's Midnight, Promised Land, My Boy as well as the one-off 'You're The Reason I'm Living' (as previously issued on the 'Live In Las Vegas' BMG box-set)
EIN contributor Ciscoking comments, The Las Vegas March 22, 1975 MS is by far the best concert from the season so although previously bootlegged the concert is an essential release. The April 1, Dinner Show is also a great addition with a fine song line-up and Elvis in a fantastic mood - the bonus songs were also very carefully chosen.
|
|
The April 1 concert was previously released on bootleg back in 2009 by Southern Comfort/Fort Baxter and it is an excellent show - see EIN review here.
This will be a great double-pack from FTD.

3 - 'King Creole' The Monitor Mono Mixes. Special single Vinyl - on 180Gram VINYL.

'Elvis & Nixon' Film Review: 'Elvis & Nixon' is playing at the Tribeca Film festival and Variety have posted a rather positive review noting, "Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey hilariously reenact one of history's most surreal blind dates."
.. While the film's sense of humor takes some getting used to, the sheer spaciness of director Liza Johnson’s stranger-than-fiction political satire ultimately proves its greatest asset, simultaneously demystifying two 20th-century icons — one the most powerful, the other the most popular man in the Western world at the time — in a loony Amazon Studios release a little too eccentric to reach the audience it fully deserves.
Normally, the fact that Michael Shannon bears almost no resemblance to Elvis Presley might be an obstacle to a film that pokes fun at the pop star’s desire to be deputized as a "federal agent-at-large" as in those days, Elvis was almost distractingly pretty and a far cry from Shannon’s lurching scarecrow look. But then, Kevin Spacey could hardly be considered a dead-ringer for Richard Nixon either, and yet, both actors manage to |
|
delve past superficial impersonation and deliver a fresh understanding of what makes these men tick.
Still, their performances take some getting used to, and some audiences may never get past the impression that they’re watching a clownishly miscast caricature of the blind date immortalized by the National Archives’ most requested image. Ideally, by this point in film, we’ve forgotten how little either he or Spacey resembles their characters, reveling in the sheer volume of unscripted humor both actors manage to add via body language alone.
Elvis clearly has control of the situation, and though it wasn’t so common to have entertainers grace the White House, a mere decade later, a former B-movie actor would be sitting in Nixon’s chair.
Johnson isn’t the sort of director to let style get in the way, occasionally sacrificing elegance and sheer shot-to-shot continuity in order to privilege her actors’ best takes. But she understands comic timing, as well as the broader-view absurdity the material demands, and though her protagonists both take one another incredibly seriously, it will be hard for anyone who sees "Elvis & Nixon" to show such figures the same degree of respect going forward.

'Charlie, Bring Me The Request Box!' New Import: Straight Arrow's will soon release the 5-CD box release 'Charlie, Bring Me The Request Box!' featuring the complete Elvis Presley August 1975 Summer Festival, August 18th – 20th in Las Vegas. It was shortest ever Elvis Las Vegas season – after just 5 concerts, the rest of the season was cancelled due to health issues.
Compared with the previous June/ July 1975 tours, Elvis was a bit heavier and regardless of the problems that were plaguing him at the time, he was in an amicable mood, and his playfulness and warmth resulted in many delightful moments during these shows. Fans were able to write their requests on a piece of paper and put them in a request box (actually a champagne bucket). During the shows Elvis would sometimes grab a couple of pieces of paper and select a song from those. This resulted in various true live rarities being performed, such as "Crying In the Chapel", "Loving You" and "Young And Beautiful". Some songs were performed for the last time ever: "Green Green Grass Of Home", "T.R.O.U.B.L.E." and "Suspicious Minds". After 2 days it was clear that Elvis was not well enough to fulfill the season. He appeared exhausted and prior to the August
|
|
20th, 1975 Midnight show, the decision was made to cancel the rest of the season.
Through the last 25 years, the August 18th-20th, 1975 shows were released on various bootleg CDs of variable quality and completeness. These are the best sounding audience recorded tapes available, each single show was individually restored from scratch to achieve optimal listening pleasure.
Presented with usual Straight Arrow's high standard, every disc is placed in an individual cardboard sleeve and there is a topnotch 16-page booklet too, with many on- and off-stage photos taken in Las Vegas between August 18th and 20th, 1975.
Those five shows sound better than ever and for the first time as complete as possible! This new release is a labor of love, it is a gem of a release that you can’t afford to miss!

ELVIS LIVES! New Conspiracy TV series: Sharknado producers and made-for-television's AXS are partnering up to produce an exciting new conspiracy thriller ELVIS LIVES!, which is currently starting pre-production.
ELVIS LIVES! takes the legend of rock n' roll icon Elvis Presley to the next level, bringing one of the MOST INFAMOUS conspiracy theories to life and asking the question, "What if Elvis never really left the building?" Plagued by a heavy drug addiction and his failing voice, The King is desperate to make things right with himself, his deceased brother, and God. His attempts to get back on track are thwarted, however, after he helps the cops bring down a powerful crime syndicate putting his family in danger and sending him on a journey that will change his life forever. AXS TV founder and CEO Mark Cuban commissioned the film after working with The Asylum on Sharknado 3 (2015), in which he played Marcus Robbins, the President of the United States.
The Asylum's partners Paul Bales, David Michael Latt and David Rimawi will produce along with David Garber. The Asylum will also
|
|
handle worldwide sales on the film. "With ELVIS LIVES! we intend to do for the life of Elvis Presley what Sharknado did for flying sharks," says Asylum president.
The Asylum team are the perfect fit to bring this wild ride to life, as we celebrate the life and legacy of the The King's reign, crafting a unique and original storyline that explores the well-known conspiracy theories and allows our viewers to form their own conclusions."
The Asylum is one of the world's leading brand-oriented motion picture and television studios. With a focus on high-concept, market-driven entertainment, like the Sharknado franchise.
EIN Note: What the "Sharknado" team could possibly bring to Elvis' legacy beggars belief. After all the Elvis conspiracy theories written so far can anything be that "unique and original"?

Elvis' Percussionist coming to Europe: Another great new addition to the show 'An Evening with Elvis' Friends and Original Musicians' that will be doing 14 concerts in Sweden, Finland and Holland in a couple of weeks.
The show includes Elvis' 'On Stage' drummer BOB LANNING, as well as his 70s bodyguard DAVE HEBLER. (shown below with Elvis)
The production crew behind the show has now added another name, percussionist EDDIE GRAHAM, (right, with Elvis) who played percussion for Elvis at almost 200 Vegas shows in 1969 - 1972. Eddie remembers Elvis as a gifted entertainer who always gave his best, and who was kind and generous towards the people he worked with. You can hear Eddie's percussion (Elvis sometimes called it 'kettle drums') on albums like 'On Stage' and 'That's The Way It Is'. You can see Eddie in the movie a couple of times, for instance in the Vegas rehearsal sequences.
|
|
Looking back at his association with Elvis today, Graham says: "I come from a Jazz background, and when Elvis started making headlines I was not interested in the "new" rock n' roll. I was not a fan. I didn't see what the fuss was about Elvis shaking his hips. Then later, when I was asked to step in and play Elvis' show in Las Vegas, I got a totally different perspective. I realized his talent and his connection to black Southern Gospel music. Man, it was an epiphany. Watching him work and his effortless singing gave me a respect for him that I didn't share with other "rockers" of the day. Little Richard and the likes to me were all show and short on talent. Elvis was just the opposite. By the way, I was NOT initially a fan of the Beatles. Remember, I was playing pure Jazz at the time. Now I have broadened my tastes and realize the contributions of these groundbreaking artists".
This tour marks Eddie's first appearance at Elvis shows in Europe.

Of playing the sexually explicit role Riley Keough said,
Riley: When I’m playing a character, Riley goes away. At least, that’s the goal anyway. Christine is not shy in that area, at all, so I had to get there. I had to be like, “Okay, I have to do this everyday. Don’t get uncomfortable.” I had to talk the crew and fellow actors through the sex scenes, and so many were so great. They have to come in and do this uncomfortable stuff.
I read the script and what was interesting about the show is that we wanted her to have a decent background. She’s not a sob story. She’s not a victim of some assault that made her end up in this position. She comes from a comfortable, loving home. That was an interesting point about the story that was appealing to me. It’s not some sad, sob story about some girl that ends up being a sad prostitute. It’s about a girl who’s in a great spot in her life, has a great family and has great support around her, and decides to do that anyway."
At the same time, Christine is trying to maintain a normal life and pursue a legal career but it seems that there are some who want to expose her second job.
Steven Soderbergh serves as executive producer on The Girlfriend Experience,
This is not her first onscreen role, Riley has credits in the Oscar-winning Mad Max: Fury Road, Magic Mike and Dixieland.
Riley, who is eldest granddaughter of Elvis, is also a model.

Vernon Presley - Born 100 Years Ago: Elvis' father Vernon Presley was born 100 years ago, on April 10th 1916 in Fulton, Mississippi - he was the oldest of five children. Vernon would meet Elvis' mother Gladys at the First Assembly of God Church in Tupelo in 1933 and they were married soon after on June 17, in Ponotoc County, Mississippi. Vernon was only 17 at the time.
After Gladys died in 1958 Vernon would remarry to "Dee" Stanley in June 1960 - but would later divorce.
Vernon would outlive his son, but would die soon after of heart failure on June 26, 1979.
In a 1978 interview Vernon said, "My love for my son began even before he was born on January 8, 1935. At that time there was almost nobody poorer than my wife Gladys and me.
But we were thrilled and excited when we learned that we were going to be parents. I was only 18 years old, but throughout Gladys’ pregnancy it never occurred to me that I wouldn‘t be able to take care of her and the baby"

'Elvis at 21' Exhibition in Savannah, GA: On April 22, the Jepson Center for the Arts, Savannah, Georgia, will present “Elvis at 21” an exhibition featuring Alfred Wertheimer’s photographs of Elvis Presley at 21 years of age, in 1956. It was in this year that Elvis released his first record, made his first television appearance, and started his movie career.
Elvis at 21 by Alfred Wertheimer includes approximately 40 photographs printed from the original 1956 negatives under the supervision of the photographer. The presentation of this exhibition at the Jepson Center, 207 W. York St., coincides with the 60th anniversary of Elvis’s first concert in Savannah on June 25, 1956. It
|
|
also marks the first exhibition of this body of work since the death of the photographer in October 2014.
Wertheimer’s photographs are a remarkable visual record of rock ‘n’ roll’s most enduring figure. When Elvis walked on stage in 1956, time stopped—and then exploded. The earth shook on its axis and the beat of everyday life was jolted. In an instant, mainstream America’s veneer of cultural complacency evaporated. The year 1956 was the year Elvis released his first record, made his first television appearance, and started his movie career; it was the year he became a star.
Admission is $20 for adults, $18 for military and students with an ID, and $15 for children (under 12 years).

Jerry Schilling and 'Elvis & Nixon': The Memphis Commercial Appeal this week told how Elvis' buddy Jerry Schilling turned down seven scripts until he found one suitable for the movie "Elvis & Nixon."
Opening nationally April 22, the movie is based on Elvis' 1970 meeting with President Richard Nixon at the White House. Schilling, a close friend of Elvis for almost 25 years, was with the King at that meeting and he's an executive producer on the movie, which stars Michael Shannon as Elvis, Kevin Spacey as Nixon and Alex Pettyfer as Schilling.
Earlier scripts misrepresented the friendship between him and Elvis, Schilling said. "They had me in charge telling Elvis what to do. And I never did that. That would have been so phony."
"As a filmmaker, my bottom line on Elvis projects was, 'Would I be comfortable if he was sitting beside me watching what I did?'"
He was concerned because "Elvis & Nixon" was a comedy. "I had a rough time because I knew Elvis, and I knew what this meeting meant to him. And it was the true American story."
|
|
It was like being at Graceland. Elvis had taken over the Oval Office and Elvis and Nixon hit it off.
"Two guys at the top of their careers that were influential around the world," Schilling said. "It's lonely at the top. I think they really identified with each other. Elvis tells Nixon that he basically wants to give back to the country. He feels somewhat responsible. He was the leading force in rock and roll. He didn't want it to be a drug-driven industry, and he felt he could help by influencing people behind the scenes if he was an undercover agent."
Elvis got his badge, which was delivered by Finlator.
Four years ago, Cary Elwes, star of "The Princess Bride," brought Schilling the first script for "Elvis & Nixon." "I just said thanks, but no thanks.
Finally, Elwes asked if Schilling would read one more script. "They brought in two script doctors who were really good. They had read my book. We had a long, long lunch and meeting, and they asked a lot of the right questions. What came out of that was some nice scenes between my character and Elvis' character that made a human side of Elvis talking about his career and how it felt to be Elvis."
Schilling, who became an executive producer, was impressed with Shannon, who was cast as Elvis. He doesn't think Shannon looks like Elvis, but, he said, "I didn't care if somebody looked like Elvis. I've gone through that so many times through the |
|
years." The actor "took the comedic role seriously."
Schilling took Shannon to Memphis, where they went on a private tour of Graceland. They also visited Lauderdale Courts, where Elvis lived as a child. They went in several rooms, including Elvis' bedroom. "He said being in that room, he got who Elvis was. I don't know. He's the actor. But he just experienced something about him in that room."
Shannon noted, "I thought about Elvis sitting in that bedroom when he was teenager and looking out that window. There's barely enough room in there for that bed. And I know that feeling about being in your tiny little bedroom and staring out the window and wondering what the heck's going to happen to your life. Having dreams. Having aspirations. I could picture him sitting in that room: 'How the heck am I going to get out of here?'"
As for the finished film, Schilling said, "Is it the movie I would have set out to make? No. Is it a well-acted, well-done movie? Yes. The movie is based on facts. The fact that we went to Washington. That we got to the White House. The fact that he got the badge. This movie, as the director would say, is not a History Channel documentary. This is more of a docu-comedy."
And, Schilling said, "Everybody on this film had the highest regard and love for Elvis Presley. That's what really makes me comfortable with this film."
Would Elvis have liked it? "I think in certain things he would laugh and have a good time on it. I think on another side, he would probably have had a hard time because this was a very special meeting in his life. It meant a lot. So, I just don't know. That's something Elvis would have to answer."

New Development plans for Elvis' Circle G ranch: Ambitious plans are taking shape for Elvis's old Circle G Ranch in Horn Lake.
Destin, Florida-based developer Davage "Buddy" Runnels Jr. last week outlined to area business leaders a multi-phase proposal to develop what could eventually swell to more than 500 acres at the intersection of Goodman Road and Miss. 301. Runnels, a Mississippi native whose Real Estate International firm is known for planned communities around Destin, has already bought the ranch itself for an undisclosed price and says funding is in place for a $3.2 million first phase. He hopes to have the initial phase open within a year.
Runnels and partners have not submitted a development plan to Horn Lake, however, and he admits much of the vision beyond the initial phase depends on conditions beyond his control.
If things play out as Runnels hope, the development would eventually become a destination entertainment venue for hordes of Elvis fans worldwide who come to visit Graceland and, Runnels believes, would readily come another few miles to spend time at the ranch. He sees hotels, housing, senior living, shopping and other amenities eventually joining the restored cottages, stables and outdoor music around a lake that would come first.
In 2002, Atlanta developer J.D. Stacy gained approval for an Elvis-themed resort that would have included a Go Kart racing complex, two hotels and a convention center, 650 luxury condominiums, three wedding chapels, honeymoon cottages, an Elvis museum, two golf courses, a retail center, restaurants and a concert auditorium.
The project, obviously, never materialized. By 2009, the property was again for sale for $6.5 million, and it attracted interest from investors |
|
worldwide because of Elvis's connection.
"Some people have had visions of high-rise condos and honeymoon cottages — even a replica of the White House. But I don't see that happening."
Horn Lake Mayor Allen Latimer, who has referred to the Circle G property as a diamond in the rough, said after last week's presentation by Runnels that he seems to be "the real deal."

Miley Cyrus' Elvis Tattoo: Pop star Miley Cyrus has confirmed her serious adoration of The King by getting a brand new ELVIS tattoo.
Miley and her mother spent Thursday evening bonding at a tattoo parlour, and getting some new ink.
The pop star and her mother visited celebrity hot spot Shamrock Social Club in West Hollywood, which has provided inking services for other stars such as Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran and Lady Gaga.
Miley's new ink was a tribute to Elvis Presley, as the legendary singer's name was written in a heart shape on the 23-year-old's forearm.
Coincidentally back in 2014 the "outrage" that greeted Miley Cyrus was compared to the fifties reaction to the young Elvis.
Priscilla even noted, "I think Miley Cyrus is very talented. I really don't want to criticise because Elvis went through the same thing. Elvis had sex appeal, but one of things that bothered him was the fact that when he moved he got reprimanded by not only the public, but by a lot of people from high places who said, 'Oh my god what is this, it's vulgar.' But Elvis was brought up on gospel music and watching them sing and feeling it. It's soulful."

Elvis Aloha Guitar in Julien's Auction: Having failed to sell at the last Graceland auction, Elvis' Aloha guitar in the key item in the Music Icons auction event to take place at Hard Rock Cafe New York on Saturday, May 21, 2016. The Music Icons auction will include over 85 items from the life and career of Elvis Presley.
The major items include
- Elvis' Gibson Dove guitar that he used at "Aloha" has a starting bid of $100,000.
In 1969, Vernon Presley went to Guitar City, near Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee, to purchase a guitar as a gift for his son. Vernon requested several custom adjustments to personalize the guitar for Elvis, including changing the finish of the guitar to ebony, reported to be chosen to represent Elvis’ recently earned black belt in karate, and the stunning acanthus script inlay of "Elvis Presley" on the fingerboard. Elvis began using the guitar in 1971 and is photographed performing with it often between 1971 and 1973, including, most famously, during Presley’s televised and broadcasted Aloha From Hawaii concert.
The story ends in generosity when, in 1975, at a concert in Asheville, North Carolina, Presley gave the guitar to audience member Mike Harris.
Estimate: $200,000- $300,000, Starting: $100,000
- Elvis' "First" Piano.
A Stroud upright piano circa 1911 with a maple bridge, spruce soundboard, and maple and mahogany back. The piano has a mirrored panel on the back. Serial number 28059.
The piano and bench were purchased by Elvis Presley at the age of 20 from O.K. Houck Piano Company Inc. in Memphis, Tennessee, on September 30, 1955 for $281.75. Presley paid $50 up front and financed the remaining portion over the next 11 months. This was the first piano Presley ever purchased.
Presley purchased another piano in the 1960s and moved this Stroud upright to Joe Esposito's room in Graceland, later gifting |
|
it to his cook, Christine Strickland. After Strickland's passing, the piano was sold to the Memphis Music Hall of Fame Museum in July 1992.
Estimate: $200,000 - $300,000,
- Elvis Presley silver leather jacket. This was painted with multicolor flame, rainbow, star designs and a hawk across the back. The jacket was made by East West Musical Instruments Co. of San Francisco. The jacket, circa 1974, has a black collar and yoke with zipper closure at front. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Ginger Alden stating that Presley gave the jacket to her while at Graceland in 1977.
Estimate: $40,000 - $60,000
- Elvis Presley 1953 Martin 00-21 acoustic guitar given to Jack Lord. Presley and the Hawaii 5 - 0 star met in 1973 while Lord was visiting Hawaii for Elvis' Aloha from Hawaii concert special. Lord invited Presley to his home in Kahala after the special. The pair became fast friends and immediately started exchanging gifts. Presley invited the Lords to Las Vegas the following month.
Estimate: $40,000 - $60,000

"Every album Elvis ever made, and then some": More good US publicity for the new 60CD box-set via the LA Times & associates. It notes,
... The new box set follows Sony Legacy's release of every track Presley recorded officially on the 30-CD box set "The Complete Elvis Presley Masters" in 2010 which presented Elvis recording career in chronological order.
"His masters are well represented everywhere," said SONY's John Jackson, "but the idea here was to have all the original albums in tip-top shape for digital, for downloading and for CD, rather than just doing a few at a time. This is the first time all the album masters have been up to the same quality at one time. We've gone back and done them all over again, from scratch, for this package for the hi-res audio providers, for the 'Mastered for iTunes' program, for Spotify and all the streaming services. This is not a piecemeal exercise."
The CD set, which is selling for around US$250 on Amazon - about $4 per CD - is timed to coincide with the 60th |
|
anniversary of the original release of Presley's first RCA album, "Elvis Presley." It includes a 300-page small-format book with pages devoted to each release, including song titles, songwriter and musician credits and other relevant archival information.
"What really comes across, more than just the music, is the marketing and the promotion of Elvis as a famous person. You see how sometimes they would include a new poster: Here's a picture of what he's up to in Germany [during his two-year stint in the Army], here's a fold-down calendar with the date circled of when he's coming home from Germany, here's a picture of him in concert for all the people around the world who couldn't go see him perform live.
"Everything was one large idea to the Col Parker and RCA Records. Sometimes the music wound up suffering, but he continued to come back by recording great tracks along the way. Elvis was always looking to record songs he liked, even though, especially early on, the fare offered to Presley was drastically limited by Parker's insistence that songwriters share their publishing royalties with Presley and Parker's music publishing firm.

Colonel Parker's Madison Office soon to go?: EIN has reported this before (last time in September 2105)- but yet again the news is that the three-bedroom stone structure, owned by Colonel Tom Parker for four decades, is currently on the market for $595,000 and may be demolished. Elvis is said to have stayed on the premises multiple times while recording 250 songs nearby.
Built in 1935, the house is more than a little vintage, according to the listing photos and Historic Nashville Inc. It has rustic wooden walls (which haven’t changed since Elvis’ day), a fireplace, wall-to-wall carpeting, a bar in the basement and bathrooms with colorful tile.
Current owner Steve North, 76, bought the house in 1996 for his law practice. “I remember it as a teenager, and I’m 74 years |
|
old now,” North says. “We would drive by the house, and we would look to see if the pink Cadillac was there. If the pink Cadillac was there, we’d know Elvis was in town.”
When in town, Presley often slept over; Presley and Parker were close.
The house, which Parker owned from 1953 till 1992, headquartered the official Elvis Presley fan club as well as his publicity department. North says two smaller buildings behind the main house housed typists, secretaries and other behind-the-scenes staff for the rock ‘n’ roll icon’s empire. Naturally, Parker’s collection of Elvis memorabilia was extensive.
“ In 1992, every fan letter Elvis Presley ever received was in that house.” (Parker’s possessions are now at Graceland.) “You could tear it down, build a modern office building and make more money,” says North. “I would love to find somebody who would appreciate it and preserve it.”
Maybe the Elvis connection will be their good luck charm.

Michael Shannon on Playing Elvis: Michael Shannon, who plays Elvis in the new movie Elvis & Nixon, is one of those rare actors whose presence in a film immediately makes it a must-see. Currently shining in Jeff Nichols’ new sci-fi film Midnight Special the actor’s next role sees him stepping into some very large shoes as the non-presidential half of Elvis & Nixon with Kevin Spacey.
Interestingly Shannon talks about the proliferation of The King in our everyday, notably the ubiquitous Elvis Impersonators.
He talks about the conversations between, and the wishes of, Jerry Schilling, the man who perhaps is our most knowledgeable link to Presley.
Shannon notes,"You have to be Zen about it. I guarantee there are people who'll see the movie who'll say, he's terrible he's nothing like Elvis ... you have no control over that"

'The Elvis Files Vol. 7 1974-1975' Book Review: I truly think by now that reviews of these beautiful hard-cover Elvis
Files books are almost unnecessary. After six sensational volumes of the
Elvis Files over the past 5 years it is hard to believe that fans would
waver on whether to purchase this newest volume that focuses on Elvis
in 1974 and 1975.
In the two years featured here Elvis performed close to 260 concerts including seven mind-numbingly repetitive seasons at the Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe casinos. By now it is usually accepted that touring had become more of a chore to Elvis although he could still put on some high calibre performances.
While the vast majority of the photos from this period are basically candid photos, the book features well over one hundred pages of stunning full size colour photos.
As always the real pleasure of this book is a chance to reference the reviews and articles from the time along with stunning photos while listening to the particular concerts,
no other series of Elvis photo-books comes close.

Rick Springfield on meeting Elvis: Most people know Australian native Rick Springfield for his huge 1981 hit single Jessie’s Girl, around the same time he starred in TV's General Hospital as Dr. Noah Drake. He followed up that song and role with a few more hit singles, a variety of acting gigs and last year he made an impressive return to the big screen alongside Meryl Streep in Ricki And The Flash.
This week the AV Club asked him about meeting Elvis.
Rick S: I met Elvis on a plane, in 1972. My manager, actually, at the time, was Steve Binder, who directed the Elvis comeback special for NBC. So I was going back and forth from Australia because I didn’t have a permanent visa, so I had to fly back and get another visitor’s visa and fly back to America. I was doing that for a while. I got on the plane one time and I was in the back of the bus but I walked past the first-class section - it was stopping in Hawaii because he was going to |
|
Hawaii - and there was Elvis, and he looked amazing. You know, jet black hair, and he was thin and had this powder-blue leisure suit on, and he came back [to coach] before the plane landed and went up and down the aisle signing autographs. I wasn’t a big fan at the time then - I am now but I wasn’t much then, I was more a fan of The Beatles - but I had a girlfriend named Allison and I said, “Hey, would you sign this for my girlfriend Allison?” And I said, “You know, Steve Binder manages me,” and Elvis said, “Oh, I love Steve, Steve’s great,” and had a little conversation with him. It was pretty cool.

'The Elusive Norman Taurog' - Who was Norman Taurog?: Marty Lacker read our spotlight (below) and commented..
... To answer your question as to who Norman Taurog was, he was one of the nicest and kindest people we knew in Hollywood and Elvis and most of us guys really liked and respected him.
He did 9 Elvis movies because Elvis liked working with him, in fact Mr Taurog was almost like a father figure to Elvis because he really cared about Elvis personally and his well being unlike others in Hollywood we worked with.
I never heard a disparaging word about him from anyone.
- Marty

NOW UPDATED - 'The Elusive Norman Taurog' EIN Spotlight: Who was Norman Taurog? - It is a legitimate question because he remains one of the most elusive characters in Elvis Presley’s remarkable career. Even in Starmaker, the memoirs of Hal B. Wallis, for whom Taurog produced six Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis movies and three Presley flicks, he seems a bit player.
Taurog is not the kind of director to be revered at film school - and film author David Quinlan describes his Presley films as "the only dull spots" in the filmmaker’s career.

Closed Elvis exhibit faced earlier problems: Problems surfaced early between the Elvis Presley exhibit and Westgate Las Vegas Resort management, according to a former exhibit employee. “Graceland Presents: Elvis the Exhibit” closed in February, less than one year into a 10-year deal.
Mary Elizabeth Mancuso, one of the first staffers hired, said she quit five months later after a series of “disappointing” and perplexing moves by Westgate management.
“There was a lot of concern from the beginning,” said Mancuso.
Among the issues, she said: Customers complained they were told by Westgate personnel that the exhibit “did not exist;” the ticket office did not open until 1 pm; exhibit personnel were not allowed to hand out promotional fliers on hotel grounds.
When it rained, old pipes would leak. On hot days those pipes “would sweat,” which caused misting because of the air conditioning, she said. One day a pipe broke.
“There were days that we had no customers for hours,” she said. The busiest day in an eight-hour workday saw 90-some customers. The lowest daily attendance was in the 40s. |
|
At the time, EPE criticized the Westgate for “aggressive actions” and added there was no “legitimate legal basis” for seizing the 350 artifacts in the third-party dispute.
The tenant is Exhibit A Circle, a Delaware limited-liability company with offices in New Jersey. A spokesman for Westgate couldn’t be reached for comment late Tuesday.

'The West Coast Tour '76' FTD CD Review: FTD have released their second 1976 double-set in a row, this time featuring two shows from Elvis' November tour, San Francisco, November 29, 1976 and Anaheim's Closing Show from the following day. 1976 is not an easy Elvis live-in-concert year to review. There were no major set-list changes, no dramatic "emotional roller-coaster" of 1974 and no high-flying "Huntsville" 1975 excitements.
By late November 1976 however Elvis had become involved with new love Ginger Alden. As fans are well aware Elvis’ final 1976 tour of December is well known for having the most energetic and exciting concerts from this tiring and lacklustre year, however back in November Elvis was already more energised, losing weight and excited to be with Ginger.
Go here as Elvis soundboard super-collector Geoffrey McDonnell checks out this new FTD double-pack ....
Superfan Tom McAllister - who was at the concert and took the front cover photo - also adds his own comments..

Elvis in 'VINYL' TV series: Vinyl is the new television drama produced by Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger focussing on a story of sex drugs and rock 'n' roll from when the Big Apple was rotten, around 1973. This weekend's episode featured Elvis in "The King and I" in the fictitious story-line
When Elvis Presley died in 1977, the major rock critics of the era penned some of their most heartfelt, personal pieces, sizing up the magnitude of the moment.
And this week the aura of Elvis returned to a Martin Scorsese TV drama.
In the episode the not too far fetched concept idea was that Elvis might be willing to jump ship from his longtime label RCA. So on the way home from lead record executive e Finestra maneuvers his way past Presley's dictatorial manager Colonel Tom Parker (played by a perfectly cast Gene Jones) and has a late-night audience with the King (played by ETA Shawn Klush). As Richie pitches what American Century could do for Elvis, it's like he's trying to convince himself |
|
that it's possible to be both middle-aged and culturally relevant.
The meeting with Elvis ties well into the episode's real target. In a bit of inadvertent irony, Richie asks Presley, "You're gonna die a rich man 50 years from now, but are you gonna die a king?" This is the same basic question he asked himself when he turned down millions, nixing that deal to sell his label to Polygram.
The episode's twist ending is abrupt as in a gambling mood after rolling the dice with Elvis, Richie takes the sack full of money that he got from selling his plane and bets it all on 18 in a game of roulette.
No future ghost looms larger than Elvis, who by the end of his meeting with Richie is rubbing his arm, feeling the angina that'll overcome him in just a few years. Here's a wounded King, kept prisoner by a stingy colonel. That's an apt analogue for Richie, who thinks he's a visionary but can't see beyond his balance sheet. If the legacy of Elvis taught us anything, it's this: When people who try to make popular art can't live with compromises … well, maybe they just can't live. - Watch VINYL on HBO or FOXTEL in Australia

'My Brother Elvis: The Final Years' New Book: What really happen to Elvis Presley in the last five years of his life? The publicity notes... 'My Brother Elvis: The Final Years' is David Stanley’s story, his true account of growing up as Elvis’ step-brother, and the struggles of life on the road as the King’s gun-toting bodyguard during the last tumultuous years of Elvis’ life. David’s whirlwind lifestyle began when he was driven through the gates of Graceland at only four years old. David found himself welcomed into rock’s first family by the man who would become both brother and father figure, Elvis Presley. But he would soon learn that being Elvis’ little brother had its downside when he began having difficulties getting along in school. When the offer from the King came to become his bodyguard, David gladly excepted. David quickly fell into the lavish Rock ‘n’ Roll lifestyle – comfortable private jets, power, money, and the company of beautiful women. In addition to battling his own addictions, David also witnessed the problems that would lead to the King’s untimely end. David would become one of Elvis’s most trusted allies, brother and bodyguard, caretaker and confidant. Through the laughter and tears of the last five years of Elvis’ life, David would be there every step of the way, protecting Elvis from everything except his own worst enemy…himself.
David Stanley has already published the books 'Raised On Rock', 'The Elvis Encyclopedia' and "Conversations With the King' - can there be anymore that hasn't already been told?

'All 57 Elvis Presley Albums Ranked, From Worst to Best': The media website Vulture has rated all of Elvis' key 57 albums released during his lifetime from 'Worst to Best'. Of course any review rating has to be biased towards one's personal feeling but Vulture's Adam Litovitz has come up with a few major surprises along the way - it is interesting, alternate reading!
According to him...
His worst Elvis album was Frankie and Johnny at #57 (Harum Scarum & Clambake rated much higher at #44 and #45)
That’s the Way It Is was rated as one of Elvis' poorest albums at #53.
Elvis Country (I’m 10,000 Years Old) was also another low rated album at #40
On Stage only made #36, beaten by the lacklustre Love Letters From Elvis, Elvis Now and also the very tepid Elvis (Fool).
Surprisingly the budget C’mon Everybody (featuring 2 tracks from Easy Come, Easy Go!) rated pretty high at #28
The sensational Elvis Is Back! rated only #15, yet both the army fifties filler compiles, For LP Fans Only and A Date With Elvis both made the Top Ten!
Seven of his Top Ten albums were from the fifties with only three albums from the late sixties and none from the seventies.
|
|
Here is his final Top ten.
1. Elvis Presley (1956)
2. Elvis’ Golden Records (1958)
3. Elvis (NBC-TV Special) (1968)
4. A Date With Elvis (1959)
5. For LP Fans Only (1959)
6. From Elvis In Memphis (1969)
7. Elvis’ Christmas Album (1957)
8. From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis (1969)
9. Elvis (1956)
10. Elvis’ Golden Records, Volume 2: 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can’t Be Wrong (1959)
It is always interesting to read someone else's opinion and rankings and to compare them to one's own views..
If you have a moment over Easter EIN can recommend reading Adam Litovitz reasons for his personal ratings...

How Priscilla Turned Graceland Into Big Business: When Graceland opened to the public in 1982, nobody knew if it would be a success. Nearly 18 million visitors later, the house where Elvis Presley once lived is a money-making business that's helped transform the city of Memphis into a top destination for music lovers. |
But Presley's ex-wife says it's the spirit of Elvis, and not just music history, that keeps the crowds coming to Graceland. "I have no doubt that he's there, somewhere, his spirit. I think people feel that."
Elvis died in 1977 but by the early 1980s Graceland had become a burden on his estate, which faced high estate taxes. Accountants and bankers wanted to sell the home, but Priscilla Presley thought that opening the house to tourists could solve the financial problems while keeping Elvis' legacy alive. She secured a $500,000 investment and visited other tourist attractions - Hearst Castle, Will Rogers' home, even Disney World - for inspiration.
|
|
Graceland opened for tours on June 7, 1982. "We had no idea whether 30 people were coming, or 300, or 3,000 that first day, Fortunately, it was the latter," said Jack Soden, CEO of EPE, who helped Priscilla Presley with her plan.
They sold out all 3,024 tickets on the first day and never looked back. Graceland's success led to a worldwide merchandising and licensing business that keeps Elvis' legend strong while generating $32 million a year in revenue. And the flow of tourists has remained steady, with an average of 500,000 annual visitors to the mansion and exhibit area across the street, according to Soden.
Visitors come all year, but they peak in August during the annual commemoration of Elvis' death, which includes a candlelight vigil. Graceland expects to welcome its 18 millionth visitor this year.
Graceland's popularity has also helped turn Memphis into a major music destination. "When Graceland opened, city leaders saw the impact it brought from visitors from all over the world," said Regena Bearden, vice president of marketing for the Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau.
When Presley died, Beale Street in downtown Memphis, which had been known for the blues since the early 1900s, was in disrepair and shunned by visitors, but today it's a bustling attraction featuring blues-themed bars, shops and restaurants. Sun Studios, where music producer Sam Phillips worked with Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and others, opened as a tourist attraction in 1985. The studio for Stax Records, known for Otis Redding and others, has been reborn as a slick multimedia museum of the label's distinctive Memphis soul sound.
Graceland's draw has long had a spillover effect on the Memphis economy, with visitors spending money on hotel rooms, dining and |
|
other things. In the mid-1980s, travel expenditures in Memphis were estimated at about $1 billion but in 2011 travel expenditures exceeded $3 billion.
The idea of opening Graceland to the public came to Priscilla Presley after Elvis' father Vernon died in 1979 and she was thrust into the role of managing the estate. "I realized as it was going on that there really wasn't any money that could support Graceland or any of the people that worked for Elvis that were still there," she said. "I had a decision to make to somehow save Graceland."
She initially reached out to Morgan Maxfield, a Kansas City-based financier, but after he died in a plane crash, his business partner, Soden, stepped in. "The one really clear, passionate voice for `Don't let go of Graceland, don't let go of the artifacts,' was Priscilla," Soden said.
They met, planned and visited other homes-turned-museums, like Thomas Jefferson's house at Monticello and Thomas Edison's home. By 1982, they were ready to open, with Priscilla Presley's idea of keeping everything in the home the same as it was when Elvis was alive still intact.
To augment the $500,000 investment, they pre-sold tickets, generating enough money to buy uniforms for the tour guides. The first month was such a success that they made back the half-million dollars in about 38 days, Soden said. The visitors center was built later with exhibits including his favorite cars and the Lisa Marie, his private plane, plus a cafe and gift shops selling Elvis memorabilia, from T-shirts to tacky bobble-head dolls.
"It's been incredible to see that the legacy of Elvis is still going strong. We wouldn't have imagined that when it was opened in 1982. Elvis is as popular now as he was then, if not even more." Says Priscilla.

Elvis Admitted To Crush On ‘Handsome’ Bruce Jenner says Linda: Former Olympian's ex-wife, Linda Thompson is starting to promote her up-coming book suggesting that Elvis was so smitten with former Olympics star Bruce Jenner (now Caitlyn) that he gushed over him to then-girlfriend Linda Thompson, who would marry Jenner years later!
That is just one of many blockbuster admissions in A Little Thing Called Life, Thompson’s new book, due out in August.
Thompson, 65, dated Elvis four years after meeting him during a Miss Tennessee beauty pageant that she had won. She reveals that when Elvis first saw Jenner on TV, he was buff and wearing a small pair of blue shorts.
The story is that Linda was in bed with Elvis at Graceland when they first saw Bruce competing in the decathlon at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.
She confirmed in an interview that Elvis said, “Damn, if that guy
|
|
is not handsome! I’m not gay, but damn, he’s good-looking.”
She joked to Elvis that she would “marry that guy someday,” to which he quipped, “Yeah, sure, honey, over my dead body.”
Sadly Elvis would die the following year in 1977. Four years later, Thompson, an actress with small parts on CHiPs and Starsky & Hutch, wed Jenner, now 66.
The mom of two from Memphis now lives in Malibu and has two sons from her marriage to Jenner — Brody, 32, and 34-year-old Brandon.
Her book will recount Jenner’s painful confession of longing to become a woman when Brody was just 18 months old.
Despite therapy, the couple divorced in 1986.
Linda is threatening to expose a lot in the book. She’s hoping that she can get it out there before Caitlyn releases her own memoir.

'Elvis Presley' released Sixty Years Ago today: It was sixty years ago today - March 23, 1956 - that RCA released the quintessential first Elvis album. It was the first million-dollar-earning Popular Music LP, the world’s first Number One Rock’n’Roll album, the in-your-face front-cover photo showing rebellious youth breaking free – the album that changed music history forever. So good that the 12 songs could be split into 6 separate 45rpms. So good that it was also worthy of 3 separate 4 track EPs.
Back in early 1956, however, there wasn't any precedence for a Rock'n'Roll artist to cut an album at all, because teenagers bought 45rpm singles. However the clamour and demand for the unnerving RCA number one 'Heartbreak Hotel' had producer Steve Sholes keen to record a full album, if only to prove his belief in his new signing. The album came from two recording sessions in January and February, augmented by five previously unissued songs from Sun studio tapes. 'Elvis Presley' was as astounding a debut record as has ever been released, representing every side of Elvis' musical influences, except gospel. There was rockabilly, blues, R&B, country and pop all mixed up in an explosive and seductive combination.
"There wasn't any pressure" said guitarist Scotty Moore of the
|
|
first RCA sessions. "They were just bigger studios with different equipment. We basically just went in and did the same thing we always did." On tracks such as 'Blue Suede Shoes' - Elvis' remake of the Carl Perkin's hit single - that meant revved-up, raw rock'n'roll with the sexiest voice anyone had ever heard.
Elvis Presley became the first Rock'n'Roll album to reach the number one spot on the US national charts, and RCA's first million dollar-earning pop album.

ELVIS Most successful musician of all time: With awards season in full swing the website BullionVault checked out who are the most successful musicians of all time in terms of diamond, gold and platinum discs. Their graphic uses stats from The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to determine which artist is the most successful and what the value of their discs would equate to if they were made purely from gold and platinum.
After delving deep, we found that by these standards Elvis Presley is the most successful musician of all time, with his total number of gold and platinum discs equating to a value of $777,605.
Elvis has the following RIAA certifications - 90 Gold, 52 Platinum, 25 Multi-Platinum, 1 Diamond. Total of 168.
The Beatles are second with 122 certifications.
In total, the artists featured below have been awarded 511 Gold, 383 Platinum and 222 Multi-Platinum albums weighing approximately 120 grams each, which would equate to a staggering $5,300,598 if they were made purely from those materials. We also wondered if there was a correlation between the number of these discs and the number of GRAMMY awards the artist has won - with some very interesting results!
For an even more detailed look click here to BullionVault's website.
EIN notes that this is only for Elvis' USA RIAA Awards. Great Britain has its own BPI Award certifications which although they only started in 1973 Elvis still has multiple UK Gold and Platinum awards.

EPE/Presleys now involved with the Las Vegas Westgate Feud: While the Elvis Exhibition and the Elvis Experience at the Westgate Hotel were supposed to central to an on-going presence of ELVIS back in Las Vegas after 40 years, it all seems to have gone wrong. The continuing feud between the Westgate executives and its tenants (ABG) who are licensees of EPE and Graceland has put Priscilla Presley and Lisa Marie Presley unknowingly slap center in the midst of a messy business tangle. The current Elvis exhibition at Westgate closed down last week.
EPE representative David Beckwith told The Las Vegas Sun, “The Presley family is an aggrieved party caught in the middle of a disagreement between two other parties. EPE is deeply concerned with the aggressive actions taken by Westgate Las Vegas due to a third-party dispute of which EPE is not a party.
“On Friday, Feb. 26, the Westgate seized, without any legitimate legal basis, hundreds of treasured Elvis artifacts on loan to the exhibition from Graceland Archives. At the same time, Westgate staff forcibly removed employees from the exhibition and disabled the video feed from security cameras. Despite our wishes to retrieve these artifacts and return them to Graceland, the Westgate is currently preventing staff from accessing the exhibition space to pack up and bring home these priceless pieces of history, which are owned by EPE and the Presley family. While EPE does not have a contractual relationship with the Westgate, we have no choice but to pursue all legal means necessary to ensure the return of our artifacts immediately. The artifacts are too important to be treated this way. The family would like them to be safely back at Graceland.”
|
|
Westgate Resorts COO Mark Waltrip commented, “Westgate has great respect for the family of Elvis Presley and hopes that we can come to a resolution over the considerable sums that we invested to bring Elvis to life at Westgate Las Vegas. We remain hopeful that the dispute concerning the sums owed to us can be resolved amicably in the near future without the legacy of Elvis Presley being tarnished.”
EIN Note: We are not sure why EPE are playing the "aggrieved party" since it was the Presley family who sold the Elvis rights to ABG Group and let Joel Weinshanker have Elvis' artefacts for the Westgate exhibition. Priscilla at the time noted "Lisa and I are so happy to share these wonderful artifacts from our family with you and are thrilled to bring the authentic Elvis back to Las Vegas for the first time in 40 years."
It is the Presley family / EPE who willingly signed the agreement with Weinshanker / ABG and so they should let him sort it out with Westgate.
EIN thanks Tony S for his valuable input.

'Elvis & Nixon' Movie Poster: A new poster for "Elvis & Nixon", Liza Johnson’s comedy-drama about Elvis Presley’s historic meeting with President Richard Nixon at the White House in 1970 has been released. The film, which stars Michael Shannon as Presley and Kevin Spacey as Nixon, will open in the US on April 22.
Underscoring the notion that truth is sometimes stranger than fiction, Elvis & Nixon recounts the fateful December morning when the King of Rock ’n’ Roll showed up to request a meeting with The President. Presley was indeed granted an audience with Nixon, and asked to become a “federal agent at large” to help fight the war on drugs.
Nixon was initially reluctant to meet with Presley but he ultimately agreed to meet with the rock legend in an effort to boost his own popularity among youths. "He's one of the most famous men on the planet. He loves guns and hates the Beatles," Nixon advisor Egil Krogh, played by Colin Hanks, tells the president to convince him to meet with Presley. "The Beatles, well I don't like them," Nixon growls back.

"Elvis the Exhibition" Closes in Las Vegas: Westgate Resorts is blaming a "heavy-handed move" for the hotel management's decision to step in and close the doors of the Elvis exhibit less than a year into a 10-year contract. This may not be such a surprise as the Elvis Exhibition was often close to empty and even the first major show "The Elvis Experience" closed earlier than its planned five week run. Back in 2015 EPE promised "After the debut show of "Elvis Experience" Westgate will feature other Graceland-produced live shows in the Elvis Presley International Showroom" however no further Elvis shows ever materialised.
Mark Waltrip, chief operating officer of Westgate Las Vegas, said the move was "a protective action" after the tenant notified the hotel ownership in midweek about plans to shutter |
|
"Graceland Presents: Elvis the Exhibition." The dispute is with the tenant, a licensee of Graceland, the Elvis estate, Waltrip said.
"They owe us quite a substantial amount of money for the improvements we made on the space. Unfortunately they took a heavy-handed move. They were threatening to default, so we had to close the premises and protect the asset."
He said Westgate closed the 28,000-square-foot exhibit so they could "secure the contents until we can sort this out." When it opened in April, a Graceland executive said the exhibit had about 350 pieces from the Graceland collection.
The licensee's action came during the same week that it was learned the Westgate has received permission to change Riviera Boulevard to Elvis Presley Boulevard.
It got ugly fast. Waltrip said the licensee "notified the county and told them they don't want the street names after Elvis. We're very saddened this particular group has taken such a capricious and possibly damaging action. They thought they would hurt us. But it's more damaging to the legion of Elvis fans.
"Meantime," Waltrip said, "everything is safe, locked, and we'll wait until we hear from the estate."
Sue L from the local Las Vegas Elvis Fan Club notified EIN that "Someone at the hotel verified it closed Feb 26 2016 very early in the morning. The exhibit & wedding chapel all-employees were escorted off the property. A hotel representative noted that if you have tickets or reservations for exhibit or the chapel call their respecting numbers/ Box office to see about a refund. So sad."
EIN also thanks Tony S for the early confirmation of the story. With Elvis being such a large part of Las Vegas' legacy this is a real shame. - No Comment from EPE as yet.

'Live A Little, Love A Little' FTD Soundtrack Review: 'Live A Little, Love A Little' was Elvis’ 28th movie which at last featured somewhat more of an adult theme.
Billy Strange was the MGM session producer with new musicians from LA’s famous “Wrecking Crew” (Beach Boys, Phil Spector etc). The session was booked at Western Recorders and for the first time Elvis would be recording with a live full-size orchestra.
In a fascinating coincidence in the same month that Sony released 'If I Can Dream' with an overdubbed orchestra, FTD quietly released a genuine studio session of Elvis recording “live” with a full 40-piece orchestra! So what does the FTD CD give collectors? How does Elvis work in the studio with a full orchestra?
In 1968 Elvis was in great voice, there were four quality songs and all backed by a live orchestra. There was a genuine effort on the movie soundtrack to back a movie in which Elvis just couldn’t seem to get a smile off his face.
Go here as EIN contributor Ian Garfield examines this new release, as well as looking carefully at each of the four songs take by take to see what this CD has to offer.

UPDATED 'If I Can Dream' Elvis with the RPO - In-depth CD Review: It is forty years since Elvis Presley entered a recording studio and he seems very reluctant to record anything new. So in terms of releasing a "new" album of Elvis material the topic has always been a tricky one. Now in 2015 as the publicity notes "Elvis Is Back - with a Brand New Album" for the cleverly re-imagined "Elvis with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra" in the highly marketed ‘If I Can Dream’. In the UK and Australia it has made Number One in the album charts, an incredible achievement.
There is no doubt that the marketing has been very impressive - but do Elvis fans have to love everything about it?
EIN checks the facts and three Elvis fans of varying familiarity all provide their own opinions.
Both EIN's Piers Beagley and Bryan Gruszka take a very detailed listen to this new chart-topping release to discover what's good and bad... Go here for our 5,000 word review - Do you agree? Send us your Comments.

Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage!
The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
Go here to our detailed 'TIGER MAN' spotlight as EIN's Piers Beagley puts in the hard yards to check the facts from the fantasy .

FTD "What now, What next, What If? PART TWO ": The FTD label has been doing an excellent job at looking at the recording anthology of Elvis Presley and releasing every significant LP or recording session on a 1CD or 2CD ‘Classic Album’ version.
However, as noted with the recent "ELVIS" second LP release and the Christmas album, there are less and less outtakes and studio sessions left in the vaults.
With our new article “What now, What next, What If?” EIN contributor Ian Garfield examines exactly how FTD might present their future 'Classic Album' releases.
This second article covers the possible releases Speedway; Live a Little, Love a Little; Charro, The Trouble with Girls and Change of Habit.
