'The Elusive Norman Taurog' - Who was Norman Taurog?: Marty Lacker read our spotlight (below) and commented..
... To answer your question as to who Norman Taurog was, he was one of the nicest and kindest people we knew in Hollywood and Elvis and most of us guys really liked and respected him.
He did 9 Elvis movies because Elvis liked working with him, in fact Mr Taurog was almost like a father figure to Elvis because he really cared about Elvis personally and his well being unlike others in Hollywood we worked with.
I never heard a disparaging word about him from anyone.

NOW UPDATED - 'The Elusive Norman Taurog' EIN Spotlight: Who was Norman Taurog? - It is a legitimate question because he remains one of the most elusive characters in Elvis Presley’s remarkable career. Even in Starmaker, the memoirs of Hal B. Wallis, for whom Taurog produced six Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis movies and three Presley flicks, he seems a bit player.
Taurog is not the kind of director to be revered at film school - and film author David Quinlan describes his Presley films as "the only dull spots" in the filmmaker’s career.

Closed Elvis exhibit faced earlier problems: Problems surfaced early between the Elvis Presley exhibit and Westgate Las Vegas Resort management, according to a former exhibit employee. “Graceland Presents: Elvis the Exhibit” closed in February, less than one year into a 10-year deal.
Mary Elizabeth Mancuso, one of the first staffers hired, said she quit five months later after a series of “disappointing” and perplexing moves by Westgate management.
“There was a lot of concern from the beginning,” said Mancuso.
Among the issues, she said: Customers complained they were told by Westgate personnel that the exhibit “did not exist;” the ticket office did not open until 1 pm; exhibit personnel were not allowed to hand out promotional fliers on hotel grounds.
When it rained, old pipes would leak. On hot days those pipes “would sweat,” which caused misting because of the air conditioning, she said. One day a pipe broke.
“There were days that we had no customers for hours,” she said. The busiest day in an eight-hour workday saw 90-some customers. The lowest daily attendance was in the 40s. |
|
At the time, EPE criticized the Westgate for “aggressive actions” and added there was no “legitimate legal basis” for seizing the 350 artifacts in the third-party dispute.
The tenant is Exhibit A Circle, a Delaware limited-liability company with offices in New Jersey. A spokesman for Westgate couldn’t be reached for comment late Tuesday.

'The West Coast Tour '76' FTD CD Review: FTD have released their second 1976 double-set in a row, this time featuring two shows from Elvis' November tour, San Francisco, November 29, 1976 and Anaheim's Closing Show from the following day. 1976 is not an easy Elvis live-in-concert year to review. There were no major set-list changes, no dramatic "emotional roller-coaster" of 1974 and no high-flying "Huntsville" 1975 excitements.
By late November 1976 however Elvis had become involved with new love Ginger Alden. As fans are well aware Elvis’ final 1976 tour of December is well known for having the most energetic and exciting concerts from this tiring and lacklustre year, however back in November Elvis was already more energised, losing weight and excited to be with Ginger.
Go here as Elvis soundboard super-collector Geoffrey McDonnell checks out this new FTD double-pack ....

Elvis in 'VINYL' TV series: Vinyl is the new television drama produced by Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger focussing on a story of sex drugs and rock 'n' roll from when the Big Apple was rotten, around 1973. This weekend's episode featured Elvis in "The King and I" in the fictitious story-line
When Elvis Presley died in 1977, the major rock critics of the era penned some of their most heartfelt, personal pieces, sizing up the magnitude of the moment.
And this week the aura of Elvis returned to a Martin Scorsese TV drama.
In the episode the not too far fetched concept idea was that Elvis might be willing to jump ship from his longtime label RCA. So on the way home from lead record executive e Finestra maneuvers his way past Presley's dictatorial manager Colonel Tom Parker (played by a perfectly cast Gene Jones) and has a late-night audience with the King (played by ETA Shawn Klush). As Richie pitches what American Century could do for Elvis, it's like he's trying to convince himself |
|
that it's possible to be both middle-aged and culturally relevant.
The meeting with Elvis ties well into the episode's real target. In a bit of inadvertent irony, Richie asks Presley, "You're gonna die a rich man 50 years from now, but are you gonna die a king?" This is the same basic question he asked himself when he turned down millions, nixing that deal to sell his label to Polygram.
The episode's twist ending is abrupt as in a gambling mood after rolling the dice with Elvis, Richie takes the sack full of money that he got from selling his plane and bets it all on 18 in a game of roulette.
No future ghost looms larger than Elvis, who by the end of his meeting with Richie is rubbing his arm, feeling the angina that'll overcome him in just a few years. Here's a wounded King, kept prisoner by a stingy colonel. That's an apt analogue for Richie, who thinks he's a visionary but can't see beyond his balance sheet. If the legacy of Elvis taught us anything, it's this: When people who try to make popular art can't live with compromises … well, maybe they just can't live. - Watch VINYL on HBO or FOXTEL in Australia

'My Brother Elvis: The Final Years' New Book: What really happen to Elvis Presley in the last five years of his life? The publicity notes... 'My Brother Elvis: The Final Years' is David Stanley’s story, his true account of growing up as Elvis’ step-brother, and the struggles of life on the road as the King’s gun-toting bodyguard during the last tumultuous years of Elvis’ life. David’s whirlwind lifestyle began when he was driven through the gates of Graceland at only four years old. David found himself welcomed into rock’s first family by the man who would become both brother and father figure, Elvis Presley. But he would soon learn that being Elvis’ little brother had its downside when he began having difficulties getting along in school. When the offer from the King came to become his bodyguard, David gladly excepted. David quickly fell into the lavish Rock ‘n’ Roll lifestyle – comfortable private jets, power, money, and the company of beautiful women. In addition to battling his own addictions, David also witnessed the problems that would lead to the King’s untimely end. David would become one of Elvis’s most trusted allies, brother and bodyguard, caretaker and confidant. Through the laughter and tears of the last five years of Elvis’ life, David would be there every step of the way, protecting Elvis from everything except his own worst enemy…himself.
David Stanley has already published the books 'Raised On Rock', 'The Elvis Encyclopedia' and "Conversations With the King' - can there be anymore that hasn't already been told?

'All 57 Elvis Presley Albums Ranked, From Worst to Best': The media website Vulture has rated all of Elvis' key 57 albums released during his lifetime from 'Worst to Best'. Of course any review rating has to be biased towards one's personal feeling but Vulture's Adam Litovitz has come up with a few major surprises along the way - it is interesting, alternate reading!
According to him...
His worst Elvis album was Frankie and Johnny at #57 (Harum Scarum & Clambake rated much higher at #44 and #45)
That’s the Way It Is was rated as one of Elvis' poorest albums at #53.
Elvis Country (I’m 10,000 Years Old) was also another low rated album at #40
On Stage only made #36, beaten by the lacklustre Love Letters From Elvis, Elvis Now and also the very tepid Elvis (Fool).
Surprisingly the budget C’mon Everybody (featuring 2 tracks from Easy Come, Easy Go!) rated pretty high at #28
The sensational Elvis Is Back! rated only #15, yet both the army fifties filler compiles, For LP Fans Only and A Date With Elvis both made the Top Ten!
Seven of his Top Ten albums were from the fifties with only three albums from the late sixties and none from the seventies.
|
|
Here is his final Top ten.
1. Elvis Presley (1956)
2. Elvis’ Golden Records (1958)
3. Elvis (NBC-TV Special) (1968)
4. A Date With Elvis (1959)
5. For LP Fans Only (1959)
6. From Elvis In Memphis (1969)
7. Elvis’ Christmas Album (1957)
8. From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis (1969)
9. Elvis (1956)
10. Elvis’ Golden Records, Volume 2: 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can’t Be Wrong (1959)
It is always interesting to read someone else's opinion and rankings and to compare them to one's own views..
If you have a moment over Easter EIN can recommend reading Adam Litovitz reasons for his personal ratings...

How Priscilla Turned Graceland Into Big Business: When Graceland opened to the public in 1982, nobody knew if it would be a success. Nearly 18 million visitors later, the house where Elvis Presley once lived is a money-making business that's helped transform the city of Memphis into a top destination for music lovers. |
But Presley's ex-wife says it's the spirit of Elvis, and not just music history, that keeps the crowds coming to Graceland. "I have no doubt that he's there, somewhere, his spirit. I think people feel that."
Elvis died in 1977 but by the early 1980s Graceland had become a burden on his estate, which faced high estate taxes. Accountants and bankers wanted to sell the home, but Priscilla Presley thought that opening the house to tourists could solve the financial problems while keeping Elvis' legacy alive. She secured a $500,000 investment and visited other tourist attractions - Hearst Castle, Will Rogers' home, even Disney World - for inspiration.
|
|
Graceland opened for tours on June 7, 1982. "We had no idea whether 30 people were coming, or 300, or 3,000 that first day, Fortunately, it was the latter," said Jack Soden, CEO of EPE, who helped Priscilla Presley with her plan.
They sold out all 3,024 tickets on the first day and never looked back. Graceland's success led to a worldwide merchandising and licensing business that keeps Elvis' legend strong while generating $32 million a year in revenue. And the flow of tourists has remained steady, with an average of 500,000 annual visitors to the mansion and exhibit area across the street, according to Soden.
Visitors come all year, but they peak in August during the annual commemoration of Elvis' death, which includes a candlelight vigil. Graceland expects to welcome its 18 millionth visitor this year.
Graceland's popularity has also helped turn Memphis into a major music destination. "When Graceland opened, city leaders saw the impact it brought from visitors from all over the world," said Regena Bearden, vice president of marketing for the Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau.
When Presley died, Beale Street in downtown Memphis, which had been known for the blues since the early 1900s, was in disrepair and shunned by visitors, but today it's a bustling attraction featuring blues-themed bars, shops and restaurants. Sun Studios, where music producer Sam Phillips worked with Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and others, opened as a tourist attraction in 1985. The studio for Stax Records, known for Otis Redding and others, has been reborn as a slick multimedia museum of the label's distinctive Memphis soul sound.
Graceland's draw has long had a spillover effect on the Memphis economy, with visitors spending money on hotel rooms, dining and |
|
other things. In the mid-1980s, travel expenditures in Memphis were estimated at about $1 billion but in 2011 travel expenditures exceeded $3 billion.
The idea of opening Graceland to the public came to Priscilla Presley after Elvis' father Vernon died in 1979 and she was thrust into the role of managing the estate. "I realized as it was going on that there really wasn't any money that could support Graceland or any of the people that worked for Elvis that were still there," she said. "I had a decision to make to somehow save Graceland."
She initially reached out to Morgan Maxfield, a Kansas City-based financier, but after he died in a plane crash, his business partner, Soden, stepped in. "The one really clear, passionate voice for `Don't let go of Graceland, don't let go of the artifacts,' was Priscilla," Soden said.
They met, planned and visited other homes-turned-museums, like Thomas Jefferson's house at Monticello and Thomas Edison's home. By 1982, they were ready to open, with Priscilla Presley's idea of keeping everything in the home the same as it was when Elvis was alive still intact.
To augment the $500,000 investment, they pre-sold tickets, generating enough money to buy uniforms for the tour guides. The first month was such a success that they made back the half-million dollars in about 38 days, Soden said. The visitors center was built later with exhibits including his favorite cars and the Lisa Marie, his private plane, plus a cafe and gift shops selling Elvis memorabilia, from T-shirts to tacky bobble-head dolls.
"It's been incredible to see that the legacy of Elvis is still going strong. We wouldn't have imagined that when it was opened in 1982. Elvis is as popular now as he was then, if not even more." Says Priscilla.

Elvis Admitted To Crush On ‘Handsome’ Bruce Jenner says Linda: Former Olympian's ex-wife, Linda Thompson is starting to promote her up-coming book suggesting that Elvis was so smitten with former Olympics star Bruce Jenner (now Caitlyn) that he gushed over him to then-girlfriend Linda Thompson, who would marry Jenner years later!
That is just one of many blockbuster admissions in A Little Thing Called Life, Thompson’s new book, due out in August.
Thompson, 65, dated Elvis four years after meeting him during a Miss Tennessee beauty pageant that she had won. She reveals that when Elvis first saw Jenner on TV, he was buff and wearing a small pair of blue shorts.
The story is that Linda was in bed with Elvis at Graceland when they first saw Bruce competing in the decathlon at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.
She confirmed in an interview that Elvis said, “Damn, if that guy
|
|
is not handsome! I’m not gay, but damn, he’s good-looking.”
She joked to Elvis that she would “marry that guy someday,” to which he quipped, “Yeah, sure, honey, over my dead body.”
Sadly Elvis would die the following year in 1977. Four years later, Thompson, an actress with small parts on CHiPs and Starsky & Hutch, wed Jenner, now 66.
The mom of two from Memphis now lives in Malibu and has two sons from her marriage to Jenner — Brody, 32, and 34-year-old Brandon.
Her book will recount Jenner’s painful confession of longing to become a woman when Brody was just 18 months old.
Despite therapy, the couple divorced in 1986.
Linda is threatening to expose a lot in the book. She’s hoping that she can get it out there before Caitlyn releases her own memoir.

Wednesday 23 March 2016 - - - It Was 60 Years Ago Today - - - |
'Elvis Presley' released Sixty Years Ago today: It was sixty years ago today - March 23, 1956 - that RCA released the quintessential first Elvis album. It was the first million-dollar-earning Popular Music LP, the world’s first Number One Rock’n’Roll album, the in-your-face front-cover photo showing rebellious youth breaking free – the album that changed music history forever. So good that the 12 songs could be split into 6 separate 45rpms. So good that it was also worthy of 3 separate 4 track EPs.
Back in early 1956, however, there wasn't any precedence for a Rock'n'Roll artist to cut an album at all, because teenagers bought 45rpm singles. However the clamour and demand for the unnerving RCA number one 'Heartbreak Hotel' had producer Steve Sholes keen to record a full album, if only to prove his belief in his new signing. The album came from two recording sessions in January and February, augmented by five previously unissued songs from Sun studio tapes. 'Elvis Presley' was as astounding a debut record as has ever been released, representing every side of Elvis' musical influences, except gospel. There was rockabilly, blues, R&B, country and pop all mixed up in an explosive and seductive combination.
"There wasn't any pressure" said guitarist Scotty Moore of the
|
|
first RCA sessions. "They were just bigger studios with different equipment. We basically just went in and did the same thing we always did." On tracks such as 'Blue Suede Shoes' - Elvis' remake of the Carl Perkin's hit single - that meant revved-up, raw rock'n'roll with the sexiest voice anyone had ever heard.
Elvis Presley became the first Rock'n'Roll album to reach the number one spot on the US national charts, and RCA's first million dollar-earning pop album.

'How the new EP 60-Disc Box Set Was Assembled': Today marks the 60th anniversary of the self-titled debut RCA album from Elvis Presley. To commemorate that occasion, Legacy Recordings has released 'Elvis Presley - The Album Collection', the 60-disc whiich spans the entire run of his 21 years with the label. Legacy senior vice president John Jackson talked to Billboard concerning the thought process of assembling the set.
"The way we decided to approach this package was to recreate the original albums. Now, the definition of what an original album is on Elvis becomes tricky because there’s been so many collections and compilations of things that were released during his lifetime. What we decided to do was hone it down to what would be considered a new album with new material that was released during his lifetime. There is also 3 discs of stray material that either were never on LPs or was discovered after he passed away. In essence, it’s the complete masters collection that we did about 10 years ago, but arranged in the order that the fans would have first experienced the music.
One of my favorite examples is ‘That’s All Right,’ which people have accepted as book one, page one, of Elvis’s career.
|
|
But, unless you were living in Memphis or the south, you wouldn’t have heard that song until it came out on the album 'For LP Fans Only' in 1959 after he had gone into the Army.
I think the '70s stuff, which is something we’ve been trying to get people to reassess. At that point, he was trying to do songs that spoke to him and not just ones that were pitched to him by his publisher. During that time, he was getting into some deep stuff, though the albums were so unfortunately packaged."
In the book that accompanies the package, it is mentioned that the label failed to really distinguish between many of his '70s albums. "There were 22 or 23 albums during his lifetime that showed him simply in a white jumpsuit against a black background. People wondered how to tell the difference. There were studio album and live albums, and all of them looked like the same record, though they were different. It’s an interesting to look back on how it was positioned at the time."
In addition to the music, much attention was paid to the packaging of every Presley album in the collection. "We went through every single record -- down to the original pressing -- and recreated everything from the inserts. There’s a sheet of all the original stickers that came on the albums that you can put on if you want, there’s pictures inside the inserts. It gives people an idea of what you would have bought when the record first came out." On the 1967 Clambake soundtrack release, for example, included is a wedding picture of Elvis and Priscilla, who were married in May of that year. Jackson said the most unique offering in this vein was on Presley’s 1959 release A Date With Elvis.
"We included the calendar on the back -- with the date of March 24, 1960 circled when he was supposed to come back from the Army. Little things like that are something I feel that people will find fascinating."
Though Elvis Presley - The Albums Collection will never be equalled in scope, Jackson says Legacy is already planning some releases for 2017, the 40th anniversary of Presley’s death. "We’ve got some interesting ideas. The 40th anniversary of some of the last recordings he made is coming up, so we’re toying with the idea of how to best present those. It’s my argument that he never lost it -- that he was never anything less than amazing. He was the greatest singer of all time, as far as I’m concerned, and was always trying to do his thing. Despite all the troubles he had in the '70s, including fights with the label, how they were promoting him and how they made him feel, he was still cutting great stuff. That’s a lot of what we’re talking about now."

Simon Fuller join forces to produce Hologram Elvis: Despite Priscilla's recent denial about any plans for a "Hologram Elvis" show the concept has truly gained momentum this week when Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment announced signing a partnership deal with Pulse Evolution Corporation. This will allow the two companies to co-produce a series of entertainment properties and virtual reality experiences featuring Pulse’s market leading digital human, or Digital Life, technology.
Simon Fuller already has a Presley family connection in that he was a manager for Lisa Marie Presley and he has also managed such iconic acts as the Spice Girls, Amy Winehouse, Annie Lennox, Carrie Underwood, Steven Tyler, Kelly Clarkson, Victoria Beckham and David Beckham.
Fuller / Pulse Evolution have noted that they intend to focus on the exploding market of immersive entertainment, with their first project being the digital development of ELVIS PRESLEY in preparation for a live show experience to showcase the genius of this most iconic performer at his absolute prime.
Fuller is joining the founders of Pulse Evolution, those responsible for the Tupac Shakur Hologram at Coachella and Virtual Michael Jackson at the Billboard Music Awards. The new partners expect to introduce their all-new form of entertainment to global audiences in the next 18 months.
The partnership aims to combine the highest quality visual imagery, including hyper-realistic digital humans, with the most advanced and rapidly evolving display technologies, to create immersive content for stage, virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence. Fuller, noted by Billboard magazine as the most successful British music manager of all time, created

“I am very excited by all the incredible opportunities virtual reality and immersive technology will provide,” said Fuller. “I am very focused on creating some extraordinary music-based properties that can enthrall audiences around the world. Entertainment will be at the forefront of showcasing this incredible new technology.”

Newly Discovered photos of Elvis in Germany: Previously unseen photographs of Elvis taken during his military duty in Germany have been discovered for the first time since 1958.
The black and white snaps of the King of Rock and Roll were taken while he was doing his national service at Bad Nauheim, in what was then West Germany, and they were put into an album by a young English girl known only as Frances, who was 18 and working as a chambermaid in the town that summer.
She made a scrapbook of 15 photos, six of which are signed, but having tucked them away in a drawer, they lay there forgotten until an auctioneer stumbled across them during an evaluation of her personal items at her home in Guernsey. The scrapbook is expected to sell for $6,000 when it’s sold on Saturday by Channel Islands Auctions in St Peter Port on the island.
Frances had her picture taken by some other enterprising German boys who were also snapping pics of the singer.
“The young German lads were quite enterprising and used to take photos of him and sell them to people. It was quite early on for cameras then and not everyone could afford them. The seller bought some of these photos, there’s even one of her with Elvis, and six of them are signed on the back.
|
|
The remarkable thing is it has just been lying in a drawer for years. The lady knew she had it but she’d forgotten all about it. The scrapbook was just stuffed in a drawer in her lounge amongst other old papers. She hadn’t looked at it for years.
“She’s had her enjoyment from it and wants to sell it now so someone else can cherish it."
Elvis began national service in March 1958, at the age of 23, and was assigned to the 3rd Armoured Division in Friedberg, West Germany and was stationed in Bad Nauheim from September 1958 until March 1960, where his father Vernon, grandmother Minnie Mae and two of his friends and bodyguards lived in a five-bedroom house. During his time there he also met his future wife Priscilla Beaulieu.
The hotel he stayed in and the various spots he visited during his time there have become major tourist attractions and the town has held a European Elvis Festival every year since 2002 and the square in front of the Grunewald hotel in now called Elvis Presley Platz and has a memorial to the star.

"Elvis Presley Taking Care Of Business - In A Flash" New FTD Book/CD Combo: Focusing on Elvis in late 1970 and early 1971, "Elvis Presley Taking Care Of Business - In A Flash" is the new FTD Book/CD combo scheduled to be published in May / June by Flaming Star/FTD.
The 430-page illustrated hardback book will detail Elvis’ personal life and public career between October 1970 and January 1971 and is produced by Pål Granlund, David English and Paul Richardson.
The book will also feature concert material from Elvis' November 1970 tour. The possibility of the Rick Rennie audience recorded tape of Elvis live in Portland, November 11, 1970 has been mentioned however the audio content is still to be finalised.
Just five years after discovering Elvis Presley in 1960, Pål Granlund established the Flaming Star Fan Club in Norway. His activities with this well-respected organisation gave him the opportunity not only to see Elvis perform live over fifty times, but also to meet him on five occasions. In more recent years, Pål has published some of the best books on Elvis’ career and output. These include Stein Erik Skaar’s Elvis: The Concert Years, 1969–1977 (1997), Trevor Simpson’s three Best Of British volumes (2013–15) and, in 2016, 'How RCA Brought Elvis To Europe' by Sigbjørn Stabursvik and Hans Otto Engvold.
British author David English has been collaborating with Pål Granlund on multiple Elvis books since 2012. A fan since he was |
|
twelve-years-old, David English has helped produce some of the very finest illustrated studies of specific events in Elvis’ post-Army career. In order of publication, these include 'Welcome Home Elvis 1960' (2012), From Memphis To Hollywood (2012), Summer Of ’61 (2013), Memphis To Nashville ’61 (2014) and Rock Around The Bloch! (2015). Taking Care Of Business: In A Flash represents David’s first foray into Elvis’ later years.
The third person involved in 'Taking Care Of Business: In A Flash' is Paul Richardson. Since 2009, Paul has used his research and writing skills – he has a master’s degree in English from Oxford and a doctorate from Durham – to good effect by contributing regular reviews, essays and interviews to the quarterly magazine, 'Elvis: The Man & His Music' as well as editing volumes of Erik Lorentzen's 'Elvis Files' series. Paul has also collaborated with David and Pål on 2014's 'Memphis To Nashville ’61', and further editorial support last year during the production of 'Rock Around The Bloch!' and 'Change Of Habit'.
Together, Pål, David and Paul are now preparing to deliver the ultimate release on a key period in Elvis’ life and career October 1970 to January 1971.

'ELVIS – Hilton Showroom Vol 2' New Import CD: AudiRec proudly presents 'ELVIS – Hilton Showroom Vol 2' to be released shortly. It includes an audience recording of the complete and so far unreleased performance from December 5, 1975 – only three days after the much acclaimed Opening Show of Elvis´ December Las Vegas 75 Season.
It´s been quite a few months since Elvis´ unexpected break-up season of August 1975 and his fans didn´t know what to expect from his return to the Hilton Showroom, although there were of course high hopes for a triumphant series of concerts. Elvis was noticeably heavier than ever before in his life and he was singing with a certain quality in his voice which was probably stronger than ever before! Elvis sang great in December of 1975 and once you get to hear songs like “Just Pretend” or “How Great Thou Art”, but also “Trying To Get to You”, with this powerful magic of Elvis´ voice you will have to agree.
Please be aware that this new release is limited to 300 copies only! Includes 16-page booklet (including an extensive fan-review of the show written very shortly after the concert was over).

ELVIS invades the US election!: Back in a 2003 newspaper column (“Who Can Beat President Doofus?”), Molly Ivins wrote about John Kerry’s "lack of ELVIS":
"My early take on Kerry was that he has gravitas- -sumbitch about bent over double with gravitas --but that he has no Elvis. Minus-zero on the Elvis Scale was my first read. No point in nominating some good and worthy candidate, like Fritz Mondale or Michael Dukakis, if they got no Elvis. The object is to get these people elected. Can't get elected without a soupçon of Elvis."
Ivins noted that Kerry seemed to be working on his Elvis, which gave her some hope, though as we now know, her initial judgment was unfortunately correct.
I imagine some will dismiss this as a silly way of evaluating candidates, but I think the Elvis Factor is to be taken seriously. We can parse the candidates’ utterances until the cows come home, but the fact remains that elections are largely irrational. I’m assuming a certain level of wonkery among readers of this cartoon. (You’re welcome!) Imagine for a moment that everything you know about politics vanishes except for what you’ve heard on cable news. This is the starting point for many voters. And they value certain personality traits, for better or worse. Mostly worse.
I’m a little worried that both Hillary and Bernie are low on Elvis. Those who feel Sanders is a Hunka Hunka Bernin’ Love are free to disagree.

EPE Sues Westgate Vegas Hotel: Elvis' Estate has filed a lawsuit against the Westgate hotel which is holding artifacts and memorabilia involving The King as part of a leasing dispute.
EPE filed the lawsuit Monday in Clark County District Court seeking to retrieve stage outfits, jewelry, letters and a high school yearbook, among other artifacts from the career, home and wedding of Elvis.
The estate and business group is trying to get back hundreds of items it loaned to the much-hyped “Graceland Presents Elvis” attraction at the Westgate Vegas Resort and Casino.
The off-Strip property took control of the items last month when it shut down the attraction that includes a museum exhibit, wedding chapel and theatre. The move came after the third-party operator, Exhibit A Circle, said it was quitting.
The lawsuit accused the casino of holding the valuables hostage for leverage in its leasing dispute with Exhibit A Circle, noting the estate has been cut off from a security camera that allowed it to monitor the items. It’s asking the court to order the items be returned and seeks punitive damages. |
|
EPE declined to comment further on its lawsuit but previously said Westgate aggressively seized the valuables without a legitimate legal basis.
The latest lawsuit is separate from the legal dispute between the casino and Exhibit A Circle that is being reviewed by an independent arbitrator.
Westgate maintains that Exhibit A Circle defaulted on its 10-year lease with the casino. Waltrip suggested the closure was caused by poor attendance but he said the casino spent millions of dollars outfitting the space and wants to recoup money owed as part of that leasing agreement.

UK Husband Murdered Wife for selling ETA ticket on eBay!: An Elvis fan battered his wife to death with a hammer because she sold his tickets for an Elvis Presley tribute act - he pleaded guilty to her murder.
Paul Abbott, 56, lost his temper and left Jacqueline, 54, (photo right) with fatal head injuries. The mum of two died shortly.
Speaking at the inquest, Detective Sergeanta said “She and her husband were due to attend a performance of an Elvis tribute band that evening. They had an argument as she had sold his ticket. He saw a hammer in the landing area, picked it up and struck her a couple of times.”
Neighbours alerted cops after hearing screams.
They found Abbott fighting in the street with his son Martyn, who it is believed had found his mother’s body.
Police then discovered her lying in the back garden with a hammer nearby, the inquest heard.
Friends said Jacqueline had returned home on the Friday afternoon after a week away without her husband. The couple were supposed to be going to the gig that night.
But Abbott flew into a rage when she revealed she had decided she didn’t want to go and had flogged their tickets.
After the inquest, pals said the couple were Elvis fanatics and the walls of their home were plastered with photos of The King.
A pathology report revealed the cause of death was blunt force head injuries and that Jacqueline had not consumed any alcohol.

'If I Can Dream' hits one million sales in the UK: Elvis proves he is still very much The King in the UK - despite poor chart showing for the same album in the USA.
Last week Elvis claimed a massive feat when his latest album 'If I Can Dream' passed one million sales in the UK.
The collection of orchestral reworkings of some of Elvis' best known hits went past one million sales (not including streams) on Friday, March 4 - more than 38 years after his death.
'If I Can Dream' was a staple at the top end of the UK Albums Chart last Christmas, logging two weeks at Number 1 and 12 weeks in the Top 10.
It's taken just 18 weeks for the record to reach the milestone, and the Mid-week chart today shows the album back up to #9!
'If I Can Dream' gave Elvis at 12th UK Number 1 album and set a new chart record when it debuted at the top last November, giving him more |
|
chart-topping albums than any other male solo artist in UK chart history.
The record logged 79,000 chart sales in its opening week, but its biggest sales week came seven weeks after, which it notched up just under 175,000.
'If I Can Dream' joins an elite club of albums to have passed one million sales in the UK. Recent records that have also managed it in the last two years are Adele's 25, George Ezra's Wanted On Voyage, Sam Smith's In The Lonely Hour and Ed Sheeran's x.

‘Elvis & Nixon’ to Debut at NY Tribeca Film Festival: At this year’s Lower Manhattan Tribeca Film Festival, Elvis will be in the building.
The festival’s centerpiece screening will be the world premiere of “Elvis & Nixon,” directed by Liza Johnson, organizers announced Tuesday. The film stars Michael Shannon as Elvis Presley and Kevin Spacey as Richard M. Nixon, based on a moment in history when Presley arrived on the White House lawn with hopes of being deputized into the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.
The Tribeca Film Festival will run from April 13-24. The theatrical US release date is April 22.
Underscoring the notion that truth is sometimes stranger than fiction, Elvis & Nixon recounts the fateful December morning when the King of Rock ’n’ Roll showed up on the lawn of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. to request a meeting with The President. Presley was indeed granted an audience with Nixon, and asked to become a “federal agent at large” to help fight the war on drugs.
Presley's meeting with Nixon was kept secret for nearly two years before The Washington Post uncovered the encounter; the photo of Presley and Nixon shaking hands remains the most requested photograph at the National Archives.

'ELVIS' John Carpenter Movie: In this neat article film critic Ignatiy Vishnevetsky examines the under-appreciated gem of John Carpenter' movie ELVIS.
.... The made-for-TV Elvis Presley biopic Elvis was first broadcast as a three-hour ABC Sunday Night Movie on February 11, 1979. It got exceptional ratings. Executive-produced by American Bandstand host Dick Clark, Elvis had been conceived in the midst of the mania that followed the singer’s death in 1977. Several directors had passed on the project before it was offered to John Carpenter, a long-haired film-school dropout whose most prominent release to date was Assault On Precinct 13, an obscure grindhouse action flick well-liked by European critics. Halloween, the low-budget horror classic that would transform Carpenter into an above-the-title name, didn’t hit theaters until Elvis was halfway through filming, and then in a release so under-the-radar that, to this day, no one is sure when or where it first played in many major cities. It would become a hit through word-of-mouth.
Well, I’m so lonely,
I’ll be so lonely, I could die…
- ELVIS has a unique place in Carpenter’s career. ELVIS marked the first time that Carpenter worked with Kurt Russell, the former child star and minor league baseball player who was cast as Presley. They would go on to make four more |
|
films together. Besides being his longest film Elvis represents Carpenter’s only attempt at straightforward drama, and is often characterized a work-for-hire project that the director took on because he, like so many of his generation, had grown up on Elvis. Even then, it often seems to be on the verge of turning into a horror film.
Elvis’ musical numbers - in which Elvis’ singing voice is provided by Ronnie McDowell, (BMG/EPE would not license Elvis' originals at the time) are quite good. But the heart of the movie is in its silences, and in those moments when Elvis is alone, often framed dead center, sinking into gloom or with his clothes torn up in frustration. He is a borderline-supernatural figure, haunted by the shadow of what he’s supposed to be. Elvis treats its subject matter with the sympathy horror movies often extend to the misshapen and misunderstood.
- The film’s most touching moment is one of those long takes
|
|
mentioned above. To the strains of “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” the camera dollies left to right, until Elvis is in profile; he is often seen in profile in the film, because it makes him seen monumental, and also because that’s the angle from which Russell looks the most convincing. The change in camera angle reveals his shadow, cast on the wood-paneled wall of a backstage phone booth. It had been there all along. He dabs away a tear and turns his head toward the wall just as the camera begins to dolly again, lining up his head perfectly with the silhouette on the wall, so that it seems to disappear or be absorbed into him. It’s a moment of magic, reminiscent of Peter Pan getting his shadow sewn back on - but also, of an eclipse.

Elvis And Schizophrenia: Continuing our discussion in to whether "Elvis Presley suffered from a very serious case of schizophrenia" - we have received two very opposite opinions.
Marty Lacker, one of Elvis' best friends wrote to EIN to state specifically..
"I truly believe that the author Joseph Rene who never met Elvis is suffering from a "I don't know what I'm talking about" disease.
The guy never spent one f***ing minute with Elvis but he diagnosis him. YEAH RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Elvis was a bit depressed mentally and suffering physically in the later years but that was more because of Col Parker's actions and the sad fact that Elvis brought it upon himself with his lifestyle and excessive, Doctor supplied, medications ". - Marty Lacker.
On the other hand author Joseph Rene supplied a very detailed reply - the main points being
- My book “Elvis, The Numbers” is what I called a docufiction, in which I have included some fictional element along with undisputed facts in order to construct a story of my own, and the way I perceive it. Secondly, my theory has to be taken as a whole, and schizophrenia is only a part of the story told in my book- which encompasses a vast diversity of elements including numerology or psychology to name but a few-and shan’t be taken out of the context of “Elvis, The Numbers”.
- I have based my hypothesis about schizophrenia upon what has been continuously said and peddled by Elvis’ entourage or biographers...
|
|
But more importantly, my analysis is based upon the fact that the man suffered from sonic hallucinations, as detailed in my book, and also upon the nature of the drugs he was indeed being administered and the various ailments he was suffering from, these latter being mainly side effects of the initial treatment.
- I comprehend that being categorical in my statement may have come as a surprise and I understand the initial reaction or comment from your readers. However, my book explains clearly where I am coming from and what my conclusions are, with supportive evidence. It is up to your readers to refer to my book.

Las Vegas Still to get its own "Elvis Presley Boulevard": The President of the Las Vegas 'Viva Las Vegas' fan club has written to EIN to explain that despite all the EPE shenanigans Las Vegas is still to get its very own "Elvis Presley Boulevard"
She points out that the street name is not cancelled at this point. It became official last July, only the street signs are missing. I have written the county public information officer for clarification and hope to hear from him soon. I will let you know what he says.
EPE does not have jurisdiction here. They don't own property, pay taxes or vote. Not a resident. No business license here. I say this to beat the point down. Sure, Elvis' name is trademarked but that is for someone making money off of it, not for honors.
|
|
EPE didn't say anything when EP court was named here in 1998, nor when my club sponsored Elvis in the Walk of Stars in 2008. People are jumping to conclusions. Let's wait until I hear from Clark County.

Construction 'right on schedule' as Graceland Guest House Installs Gold Beam: EPE marked a milestone in construction of The Guest House at Graceland last week with a topping out ceremony of the resort hotel scheduled to open Oct. 27.
The 450-room hotel will be Memphis’ third largest and the biggest built since the convention center hotel, which opened in 1984. It will include 20 suites on the top floor, with features “influenced by Priscilla Presley” and names like the TCB Suite and the Vernon & Gladys Suite, general manager Keith Hess said.
Opening weekend is booked, and reservations are being taken online and by phone for the next big occasion, Graceland's holiday decoration lighting a week before Thanksgiving, said Hess, vice president and managing director for hotel operator Pyramid Hotel Group.
|
|
Construction began on the $75 million resort last June on the east side of Elvis Presley Boulevard next door to Elvis Presley's Graceland mansion. It will replace the Heartbreak Hotel across the street from Graceland.
The ceremonial topping out featured a crane lifting a gold-painted beam to the rooftop of a six-level main structure, where a Christmas tree was waiting. Graceland officials said it was part of an ancient Scandinavian rite "to appease tree-dwelling spirits" displaced by building construction.
The ceremony followed speeches by Hess, EPE chief executive Jack Soden and representatives of contractor, architect, development firm DreamCatcher Hotels.
Hess said construction was "right on schedule."
The website showed a best available rate of $159 a night, excluding taxes and fees, for Nov. 8, a Tuesday. Best available rate for a Christmas Eve stay was $189 for a king room; $579 for the TCB Suite.

ELVIS Most successful musician of all time: With awards season in full swing the website BullionVault checked out who are the most successful musicians of all time in terms of diamond, gold and platinum discs. Their graphic uses stats from The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to determine which artist is the most successful and what the value of their discs would equate to if they were made purely from gold and platinum.
After delving deep, we found that by these standards Elvis Presley is the most successful musician of all time, with his total number of gold and platinum discs equating to a value of $777,605.
Elvis has the following RIAA certifications - 90 Gold, 52 Platinum, 25 Multi-Platinum, 1 Diamond. Total of 168.
The Beatles are second with 122 certifications.
In total, the artists featured below have been awarded 511 Gold, 383 Platinum and 222 Multi-Platinum albums weighing approximately 120 grams each, which would equate to a staggering $5,300,598 if they were made purely from those materials. We also wondered if there was a correlation between the number of these discs and the number of GRAMMY awards the artist has won - with some very interesting results!
For an even more detailed look click here to BullionVault's website.
EIN notes that this is only for Elvis' USA RIAA Awards. Great Britain has its own BPI Award certifications which although they only started in 1973 Elvis still has multiple UK Gold and Platinum awards.

EPE / Priscilla and The Westgate debacle: Elvis fans who had booked flights to Vegas hoping to see the Elvis Exhibition are now mightily upset.
Marty Lacker comments...
Once again, Priscilla shows her two faces. When the Westgate deal was announced, she had no problem bragging how she was guiding everything and putting everything in its place like she and EPE were making the deal with the Westgate and she made a big deal out of her involvement and her showing off to everyone during its grand opening.
Now, like other things she has touched and supposedly put together it turns out to be a bust and a failure. Just like the previous Las Vegas VIVA ELVIS Cirque show she was a consultant on.
From a business standpoint I don't blame Westgate for their actions, they had a ten year deal, now she and her licensee are reneging on the deal after just 10 months probably because the exhibit has failed to attract many people.
|
|
The sad and unfortunate thing about all this is that Elvis' legacy and memory is tarnished a bit more by her actions.
It is embarrassing that they announce the naming of Elvis Presley Boulevard only to have it cancelled at the request of her side of this piece of BS deal.
That part doesn't seem to bother her at all because she makes no mention of what this does to Elvis' legacy and his fans because its all seems to always be about her and her greed. - Marty

'Million Dollar Quartet' TV series casts Elvis: The part of Elvis in the new CMT TV series "Million Dollar Quartet" will be played by Drake Milligan, a young Texan and frequent Graceland visitor who has been an Elvis "tribute artist" since age 8. CMT announced the casting Thursday during an event promoting the network's 2015-2016 season in New York. (Right: Drake Milligan and Kevin Fonteyne TV's new "Elvis" and Johnny Cash)
"Milllion Dollar Quartet" is set to begin filming April 4 in Memphis. The eight-episode season — the first in what CMT hopes will be a years-long hit — is scheduled to debut in November.
Milligan, from Mansfield, Texas, previously portrayed Elvis as a 1953 Humes High student in a 16-minute short titled "Nobody," shot in Memphis in 2014. "Million Dollar Quartet" will bring him back to town to again play a pre-fame student Elvis.
The first season of "Million Dollar Quartet" is set to end in 1954, the year Presley made his epochal recordings at Sun and two years before Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins met for the impromptu studio session that earned the singers the "Million Dollar Quartet" label.
Other announced cast members include Kevin Fonteyne (ABC Family's "Melissa & Joey," ) as Cash, and twins Christian and Jonah Lees as cousins Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart. Like Fonteyne, the Lees brothers have extensive television credits.
Produced by Leslie Greif's Los Angeles-based Thinkfactory Media in conjunction with CMT, "Million Dollar Quartet" is expected to spend at least $17 million in Memphis and Shelby County over the next few months so the production can qualify for $4.3 million in state funds. The series director will be London-born Roland Joffe, a two-time Oscar nominee (for "The Killing Fields" and "The Mission").

EPE suffers another Set-Back: A German court has denied an attempt by EPE to claim a bigger royalty share, and an American court won't order Sony Music to hand over more accounting information.
Elvis Presley Enterprises can't get a New York judge to order Sony Music to produce more information about the royalties it receives from recordings by the King.
In December, Presley's estate pushed for accounting records in the midst of a years-long battle happening in Germany. The underlying dispute pertains to the $5.4 million buyout deal that Presley and his manager "Colonel" Tom Parker reached with Sony's RCA back in 1974. Four decades after making the agreement, Presley's heirs (backed by private equity money) pointed to extensions of the copyright term and sought "equitable remuneration" under German law from Sony affiliate and RCA successor Arista.
Not long after EPE made its discovery demand in New York, a German court dismissed the "equitable remuneration" claims. The dispute is going on appeal there for a second time.
On March 1, however, U.S. District Court judge Denise Cote decided to reject the EPE's attempt to find out more information from Sony for potentially more clues about revenues enjoyed by Arista's parent company.
In her decision, she notes that "a German court could require Arista to produce the very information that EPE seeks," and responding to EPE's argument that the rules of discovery in the foreign court are narrower, only permitting further discovery |
|
upon inaccurate or incomplete information, she writes, "While this may be true, EPE has not identified why it believes Arista's production was incomplete or inaccurate. Indeed, this argument suggests that Arista's document production complied ... and that EPE's desire to obtain further information rests solely on speculation."
Cote also doesn't like that EPE waited so long to make a discovery request.
EIN notes that Colonel Parker got Elvis to help pay off his own gambling debts - as well as' Elvis divorce settlement by selling off his back-catalogue to RCA in 1974. It was a very shonky deal. At the time Elvis' "financial advisor" was Vernon Presley who seemed willing to do anything to keep the money rolling in.

Ex Sony Execs Ink Global Elvis Deal: Music industry veterans Peter Raleigh and Steven Storch (right) have announced the establishment of their new music publishing company, Raleigh Music Group.
Raleigh Music Group already provides creative and administrative services to a number of music publishing clients but one of those clients is quite the coup as they now represents the Elvis Presley catalogue worldwide on behalf of the family of the late publishing giant Jean Aberbach.
It was Jean and Julian Aberbach who set up "Hill & Range" music publishing who, along with Colonel Parker, from the early sixties onwards stifled Elvis' song choices by trying to keep everything within the same publishing company.
The iconic Elvis catalogue includes over 1,000 songs that have been recorded by The King, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, and others - including Can't Help Falling In Love, All Shook Up, Love Me Tender, A Little Less Conversation, Jailhouse Rock, Return To Sender and Song Of The Shrimp.
"We're a contemporary music publisher with iconic tastes," said Peter Raleigh, who previously spearheaded copyrights and catalogue development at Cherry Lane and Imagem North America.
|
|
"We believe there are unexploited opportunities in song catalogues, so we take the time to really know all the music, not just the hits.
"And of course we are always on the lookout for contemporary songwriters who will be creating the classic catalogues of tomorrow."
In addition to a foothold in synchronization licensing and music brand partnerships, Raleigh says that it combines 'the latest technologies with a high-touch personal approach in order to maximize royalty revenue and protect the long-term value and ownership rights of its copyrights'.

EPE/Presleys now involved with the Las Vegas Westgate Feud: While the Elvis Exhibition and the Elvis Experience at the Westgate Hotel were supposed to central to an on-going presence of ELVIS back in Las Vegas after 40 years, it all seems to have gone wrong. The continuing feud between the Westgate executives and its tenants (ABG) who are licensees of EPE and Graceland has put Priscilla Presley and Lisa Marie Presley unknowingly slap center in the midst of a messy business tangle. The current Elvis exhibition at Westgate closed down last week.
EPE representative David Beckwith told The Las Vegas Sun, “The Presley family is an aggrieved party caught in the middle of a disagreement between two other parties. EPE is deeply concerned with the aggressive actions taken by Westgate Las Vegas due to a third-party dispute of which EPE is not a party.
“On Friday, Feb. 26, the Westgate seized, without any legitimate legal basis, hundreds of treasured Elvis artifacts on loan to the exhibition from Graceland Archives. At the same time, Westgate staff forcibly removed employees from the exhibition and disabled the video feed from security cameras. Despite our wishes to retrieve these artifacts and return them to Graceland, the Westgate is currently preventing staff from accessing the exhibition space to pack up and bring home these priceless pieces of history, which are owned by EPE and the Presley family. While EPE does not have a contractual relationship with the Westgate, we have no choice but to pursue all legal means necessary to ensure the return of our artifacts immediately. The artifacts are too important to be treated this way. The family would like them to be safely back at Graceland.”
|
|
Westgate Resorts COO Mark Waltrip commented, “Westgate has great respect for the family of Elvis Presley and hopes that we can come to a resolution over the considerable sums that we invested to bring Elvis to life at Westgate Las Vegas. We remain hopeful that the dispute concerning the sums owed to us can be resolved amicably in the near future without the legacy of Elvis Presley being tarnished.”
EIN Note: We are not sure why EPE are playing the "aggrieved party" since it was the Presley family who sold the Elvis rights to ABG Group and let Joel Weinshanker have Elvis' artefacts for the Westgate exhibition. Priscilla at the time noted "Lisa and I are so happy to share these wonderful artifacts from our family with you and are thrilled to bring the authentic Elvis back to Las Vegas for the first time in 40 years."
It is the Presley family / EPE who willingly signed the agreement with Weinshanker / ABG and so they should let him sort it out with Westgate.
EIN thanks Tony S for his valuable input.

Elvis NOT a Schizophrenic: In case EIN readers were shocked or concerned with regard to the recent article (see below) by author Joseph Rene that stated that "Elvis Presley was without doubt suffering from a very serious case of schizophrenia" - we would like to clarify that EIN has received several posts denying this claim.
These included Arjan Deelen who wrote, "As someone who has worked in psychiatry for 15 years, I take offense to the comment Joseph Rene made. It is both laughable and irresponsible of him to say that Elvis suffered schizophrenia. There is no indication that Elvis suffered from schizophrenia, let alone "a very serious case". It's clear that Joseph Rene has no idea what he is talking about.
- No professional would ever diagnose a patient without having actually met and talked to the person in question.
A person with schizophrenia suffers from both visual and sonic hallucinations which to them seem entirely real. Elvis Presley suffered none of this.
Elvis may have suffered from depression. This seems likely for the period 1973 - 1977, based on what we know about those years (weight gain, withdrawal from other people, isolation, lack of zest for life, mood swings, etc)... But again, it is not up to any of us to diagnose Elvis due to the reasons stated earlier.
EIN needs to clarify Joseph Rene's qualifications and question why he would say something so disturbing and untrue."
EIN has asked Joseph Rene for his comments.

'Elvis & Nixon' Movie Poster: A new poster for "Elvis & Nixon", Liza Johnson’s comedy-drama about Elvis Presley’s historic meeting with President Richard Nixon at the White House in 1970 has been released. The film, which stars Michael Shannon as Presley and Kevin Spacey as Nixon, will open in the US on April 22.
Underscoring the notion that truth is sometimes stranger than fiction, Elvis & Nixon recounts the fateful December morning when the King of Rock ’n’ Roll showed up to request a meeting with The President. Presley was indeed granted an audience with Nixon, and asked to become a “federal agent at large” to help fight the war on drugs.
Nixon was initially reluctant to meet with Presley but he ultimately agreed to meet with the rock legend in an effort to boost his own popularity among youths. "He's one of the most famous men on the planet. He loves guns and hates the Beatles," Nixon advisor Egil Krogh, played by Colin Hanks, tells the president to convince him to meet with Presley. "The Beatles, well I don't like them," Nixon growls back.

"Elvis the Exhibition" Closes in Las Vegas: Westgate Resorts is blaming a "heavy-handed move" for the hotel management's decision to step in and close the doors of the Elvis exhibit less than a year into a 10-year contract. This may not be such a surprise as the Elvis Exhibition was often close to empty and even the first major show "The Elvis Experience" closed earlier than its planned five week run. Back in 2015 EPE promised "After the debut show of "Elvis Experience" Westgate will feature other Graceland-produced live shows in the Elvis Presley International Showroom" however no further Elvis shows ever materialised.
Mark Waltrip, chief operating officer of Westgate Las Vegas, said the move was "a protective action" after the tenant notified the hotel ownership in midweek about plans to shutter |
|
"Graceland Presents: Elvis the Exhibition." The dispute is with the tenant, a licensee of Graceland, the Elvis estate, Waltrip said.
"They owe us quite a substantial amount of money for the improvements we made on the space. Unfortunately they took a heavy-handed move. They were threatening to default, so we had to close the premises and protect the asset."
He said Westgate closed the 28,000-square-foot exhibit so they could "secure the contents until we can sort this out." When it opened in April, a Graceland executive said the exhibit had about 350 pieces from the Graceland collection.
The licensee's action came during the same week that it was learned the Westgate has received permission to change Riviera Boulevard to Elvis Presley Boulevard.
It got ugly fast. Waltrip said the licensee "notified the county and told them they don't want the street names after Elvis. We're very saddened this particular group has taken such a capricious and possibly damaging action. They thought they would hurt us. But it's more damaging to the legion of Elvis fans.
"Meantime," Waltrip said, "everything is safe, locked, and we'll wait until we hear from the estate."
Sue L from the local Las Vegas Elvis Fan Club notified EIN that "Someone at the hotel verified it closed Feb 26 2016 very early in the morning. The exhibit & wedding chapel all-employees were escorted off the property. A hotel representative noted that if you have tickets or reservations for exhibit or the chapel call their respecting numbers/ Box office to see about a refund. So sad."
EIN also thanks Tony S for the early confirmation of the story. With Elvis being such a large part of Las Vegas' legacy this is a real shame. - No Comment from EPE as yet.

Author Joseph Rene comments on Elvis and Dr. Nick: I have just heard that Dr Nick passed away, and I would like to send my sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
I have also read again the interview he gave you in 2010 where he explained in veiled terms that Elvis Presley needed very strong medication for some condition he-Dr Nick- never really explained.
I know my findings will shock some fans, but the condition Dr Nick doesn’t clearly states regarding his patient is that Elvis Presley was without doubt suffering from a very serious case of schizophrenia, and was being cured for that. The reasons and the evidence for such mental disease readers will find in my book “Elvis, The Numbers”.
|
|
The issue here, and therefore the misinterpretation of Dr Nick’s role in Elvis Presley’s life, is that such condition-and the way to treat it- was fairly unknown back in the Seventies and research in my book “Elvis, The Numbers” clearly shows that most medication Elvis Presley was using were recommended to cure mental illness. But such very strong medicine also had extremely severe side effects, which in turn had to be addressed with further treatment. Again, this is extensively documented in my book, and backed up with due research and evidence.
Neuroscience was still in its infancy in the days Dr Nick was Elvis Presley’ physicist and treating such mental illness was taking its first faltering steps.
I regret nobody ever admitted such facts yet, but I suppose that Elvis Presley’s illness had to be kept secret in order to preserve his image, the legend. However, as opposed to the legend and as far as the man was concerned, such condition does not diminish someone or make them retarded or mentally defective-just different... And God knows Elvis Presley was different, the only one of his kind. - Sincerely, Joseph Rene.

News from earlier this week . . . . |
'Dr. Nick' Nichopoulos, dead at 88: Elvis' former personal doctor, George Nichopoulos died on Wednesday, he was 88. After Elvis' death "Dr. Nick" was often accused of over-prescribing drugs that would have hastened the King of Rock and Roll's early demise.
In 1981, Nichopoulous was acquitted on charges that he overprescribed drugs to Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and seven others.
In interviews Dr. Nick alwasy stated that, "I don't regret any of the medications I gave him. They were necessities."
He also said that he did not want his grandchildren to grow up thinking of him as a "Dr. Feelgood" who killed Elvis.
Nichopoulos wrote a book in 2009 called "The King and Dr. Nick." In it, the doctor said he wanted to tell the world he was tired of being accused of hastening Elvis' death.
He and his attorney, Dan Warlick, said drugs in Elvis' system were not at "toxic or lethal levels" when he died. "He died a natural death."
Most of the autopsy team at Baptist Memorial Hospital attributed the death to "polypharmacy" or drug interaction, but former medical examiner Dr. Jerry Francisco said in 2008 he stands by his 1977 ruling that Elvis died of cardiac arrhythmia, not drugs.
Nichopoulous is survived by Edna his wife and three children.
The funeral will be Saturday, February 27 at the Poplar Avenue funeral home.

"Dr. Nick" talks to EIN: Dr. George Nichopoulos was Elvis' personal physician for many years. In the Elvis story it appears that "Dr. Nick", along with Priscilla Presley, are figures either loved or hated by fans. There does not appear to be any in-between.
In 2010 Nick took time out to speak to EIN's Nigel Patterson about his life, Elvis, and how Elvis' death has impacted his life.
In a fascinating and revealing interview, Dr. Nick talks about many issues of interest to fans, from the powerful themes of trust and betrayal to Elvis' death, (including the issues of polypharmacy and bone cancer), Elvis' major medical conditions, the "other" doctors Elvis used, being Jerry Lee Lewis' road manager!, and Elvis' autopsy.
Dr. Nick clarifies what Elvis' major life threatening condition was and the role of the media in how he has been perceived by many fans since Elvis' death. He also corrects a number of widely believed misconceptions in the Elvis story and cogently provides a much needed different perspective on events. (Feb 2010)

'Elvis Presley in MONO' New Import Box-set: Elvis Presley in MONO is how most listeners first heard Elvis in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was the predominant audio format. Until 1968, each Elvis album was given a unique MONO and STEREO mix, but Elvis always regarded the MONO mix as primary. This was also true for singles. Up until affordable home STEREO systems in the late 1960s, the record industry always regarded STEREO as secondary, going back to its debut in the late 1950s. MONO singles, EPs and LPs were the standard for retail and radio. Simply put, MONO had all of the sound mixed in a single channel and was meant to be listened to on a turntable with a built-in speaker, a car radio, or a stand-alone AM radio receiver. The goal was to create MONO master takes with as much clarity and power as possible.
When EMI released MONO masters of the Beatles in 2009, they received rave reviews. Left out in the cold were Elvis’ loyal fans. Somehow, SONY didn’t see a reason why they might want the pleasure of listening to |

his original MONO mixes. Elvis' acclaimed MONO tracks have been newly-mastered for CD, using the best digital technology. The result is a perfect reproduction of Elvis' original MONO vinyl sound!

Las Vegas gets its very own "Elvis Presley Boulevard": Almost four decades after his death, Elvis Presley is getting a street named after him in the city where he rocketed back to prominence. With the upcoming implosion of the Riviera hotel-casino, Riviera Boulevard will be renamed Elvis Presley Boulevard.
It will start at Las Vegas Boulevard, cross Paradise Road and loop through the valet area of the Westgate, where Elvis launched his comeback in 1969 when Kirk Kerkorian opened The International. The name was later changed to the Las Vegas Hilton and the LVH before time-share king David Siegel bought the property in summer 2014 and renamed it Westgate.
Naming a street in Presley's honor is long overdue. |
|
"The King of Rock 'n' Roll" had an eight-year run of 646 sellout performances in the 2,000 seater main theater from July 1969 to December 1976.
The President of the Elvis Viva Las Vegas club notes, "Why didn't Elvis have a major street or boulevard before? Very simply, no one ever thought of it or stepped up to do the work to name a street after him, or the opportunity did not present itself. As for myself, I have made my attempt at honoring Elvis here. I learned I did not have the resources to follow the policies of street naming according to laws of Clark county. I am grateful that the Westgate had the insight to pay attention to take advantage of this opportunity!
For any of you who might say “This is long over due. It should have happened a long time ago.” -- That’s easy to say when you haven’t looked into it. I wonder what effort, if any, that you have put into seeking this goal. It really doesn’t matter when this happened; all that matters is that we have this now! Let's just celebrate! - Sue L, President, Viva Las Vegas club

Elvis Pianist Tony Brown Arrested: Tony Brown the music producer and former record label executive who has worked with Elvis Presley, George Strait, Vince Gill and many others, was arrested last week and charged with domestic assault resulting in bodily injury. Tony Brown was Elvis' pianist from 1975 until his very final performance - it was in April 1976 that he officially replaced Glen Hardin.
Brown’s wife of nearly eight months brought the charges against him, saying he pushed and choked her after an argument in September.
In his time in the industry, Brown has won four Grammy Awards and four ACM Awards. For 19 years he was the president of MCA Records before founding Universal South Records in 2002. He began his career as a piano player for Elvis Presley and then Emmylou Harris.
In the past Tony Brown has said of Elvis, "I discovered that Elvis was just a regular guy who grew up being a superstar. Elvis' life became totally surreal. However at the heart of it all Elvis was so real, a guy from Tupelo, a true southerner at heart. He loved Gospel music, he loved the church, loved his mother, loved his fans and was totally fascinated by being everyone's fantasy "Elvis Presley".
|
|
He lived such an amazing life and enjoyed sharing it with his friends, giving away cars and jewellery and watches and all that stuff.
The last time I saw him was at the final June 26th concert in Indianapolis. I remember that a couple of days before I was walking along with all the musicians towards the stage, when Elvis walked in the back door and of all things Elvis called out my name. So I stopped and turned around. Elvis said, "Hey, Tony". So I walked back to him and he changed his mind saying, "Oh, forget it." But that was a surreal moment for me as I had always hoped that we could have continued that intimate conversation - I really think that had Elvis had lived we would have become good friends."

Kathy Westmoreland Recovering in Hospital: It has not been a good few days for Elvis' soprano backing-singer Kathy Westmoreland who was hospitalised in Los Angeles earlier this week with a health scare. Friends were asking for everyone to please send her prayers and support.
However the good news is that her health is improving and that she is feeling somewhat better.
Elvis and Kathy had a similar interest in spiritual matters and they both liked the same kind of books, such as Joel S. Goldsmith's The intimate way and Kahlil Gibran's The impersonal life. According to Kathy, it was Elvis and Kathy singing "How Great Thou Art" together informally that made Elvis decide to put that gospel song into his show. Their relationship became more than just friends ..
In 1987 she published the book 'Elvis And Kathy' (see EIN's review here)

Chinese Invest in Elvis Hologram company: In an interesting move, two Chinese companies announced last week that they would invest in Pulse Evolution to bring back Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson in virtual hologram form.
Zhao Rui, CEO of Original Force Animation, announced that they have invested in Pulse Evolution to explore the virtual world. It is believed that Original Force Animation and Shanghai U9 Game Co. have invested US$10 million into Pulse Evolution headed by John Textor to explore the market for digital virtual characters.
Original Force and U9 Game will have seats on the board of Pulse Evolution and will participate in the operation of the company. "Investing in Pulse Evolution is in consideration of Original Force's long term strategy," the executive said, adding they did so to take up a share of the market in advance and place their position on the map in the industry.
Pulse Evolution is now licensed to work on shows of three deceased mega stars, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Marilyn Monroe. (Does Priscilla know this? See below) The executive said they will first present virtual shows featuring Jackson in several selected places in China and that in the next year, Pulse will work hard to pull off an Elvis show.
One of its most famous and outstanding achievements was the Michael Jackson virtual performance at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards in 2014, which stunned audiences and industry professionals.
The Original Force executive said they will do the shows of three deceased stars separately at first, and then they would consider having them perform together. |
|
The virtual stars will not only appear in hologram shows, but they would be used and activated in various areas such as Virtual Reality, a mobile app, stage shows and commercials. Some observers said the three stars alone can produce more than US$300 million in market value.
EIN notes that back in November 2015 Priscilla told the UK media that no Hologram Elvis shows were being considered. She said she would react strongly against attempts to abuse his legacy and that she's "not quite convinced" by the idea of creating a hologram of Elvis. When asked about where to draw the line with posthumous music, and in particular the Elvis hologram whose rights are reportedly owned by Pulse Evolution, Presley said, "To be honest, I don't know about that."
She continued, "Our partners are exploring different options. I don't think it's full-range usage or a few images. There are ideas, his image in a couple of things... I haven't seen anything to look at, there's a lot of talking at the moment. I'm not quite convinced by it."

'If I Can Dream' Elvis with the RPO UK Concerts Being Planned: As reported first by EIN back on December 27 last year, album producer Don Reedman had noted that plans were underway for a new Elvis Gospel album featuring the RPO - PLUS an "Elvis on the big screen" event featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra live UK concert.
Earlier today Priscilla tweeted a confirmation that discussions are indeed underway.
With the UK version of the 'I Can Dream' album fast approaching one million sales, there is no doubt that a combined live Elvis / RPO concert would be a big success.

Elvis and The Colonel February 6, 1955: EPE has posted a recent blog "celebrating" the first meeting between Elvis and Col Parker.
They note.. Elvis Presley wasted no time winning over fans right from the beginning, thanks to his voice, energetic stage show, style, revolutionary sound and charm. But the music business is just that – a business – and every artist needs a manager to help take care of the details.
From mapping out a tour route to arguing for higher appearance fees, the manager takes care of the business side of things so the artist can focus on the music. At the beginning of Elvis’ career, he met a man who would help him see his goals through to fruition.
On February 6, 1955, Elvis met the man who would become his third and final manager: Col. Tom Parker........... ("Trust me Gladys, I'll look after your son!")

Chart-topping Country-Music star Hank Snow has a rather different viewpoint on Col Parker, "I have worked with several managers over the years and have had respect for them all except one. Tom Parker was the most egotistical, obnoxious human being I've ever had dealings with." - For a deeper understanding please see EIN's article below |
'The Dark Side Of Colonel Parker' - EIN Spotlight: Although comedian Nipsy Russell stated that "Every entertainer should go to bed at night and pray he finds a Colonel Tom Parker under his bed when he wakes up in the morning" - is that really the truth?
It is a fact that after Elvis' death an official investigation found that "both Colonel Parker (and RCA) acted in collusion against Presley's best interests. Colonel Parker was guilty of self-dealing and overreaching and had violated his duty to both Elvis and to the estate."
While there is no doubt that Elvis and The Colonel's story is extremely complex, in this in-depth Spotlight EIN takes a look at the darker side of Colonel Tom Parker - and includes plenty of insights from Elvis’ colleagues and friends.

(Book Review) Elvis, The Numbers: One of the things that never ceases to amaze is the eclectic nature of themes in books about Elvis. Joseph Rene's latest release, Elvis, The Numbers, is a good example of something very different in the world of Elvis literature.
Rene's work of enigmatic "docufiction" (creative non-fiction) identifies the five stages of Elvis' spiritual life. It is part Elvis biography-part Elvis analysis using occult methodologies with a liberal dash of psychology.
Read Nigel Patterson's detailed review of a book which will confound some readers while providing others with another way of considering Elvis and his search for identity - all wrapped up in an intriguing fictional(?) tale. (Book Review, Source: EIN) |

'Down At The End Of Lonely Street' - Book Review: This 1997 published fan favourite 'Down at the End of Lonely Street: The Life and Death of Elvis Presley'
promised an "intimate portrait of Elvis Presley, America’s favorite music idol, chronicling his remarkable life from a dirt-poor schoolboy in Memphis through his rise as a Rock n’ Roll superstar to his final days in Las Vegas. Drawing on exclusive interviews with Elvis’s closest friends and new documentary evidence, this biography reveals secrets about his relationships with his addictive mother Gladys, his ruthless manager Colonel Tom Parker, his musical rivals The Beatles, and the truth behind his marriage to Priscilla Beaulieu."
EIN reviewer Susan MacDougall checks out this old classic to see how it stands the test of time, look at some of the interesting issues addressed and investigates how the book sees Elvis as a "person" rather than an image.

'Elvis In Alabama Sept 1976' FTD In-Depth Review: 1976 is not an easy Elvis live-in-concert year to review. There were no major set-list changes, no dramatic "emotional roller-coaster" of 1974 and no high-flying "Huntsville" 1975 excitements. Apart from the exceptional blast of the final December 1976 Tour the year was the inevitable downward spiral.
These two Huntsville concerts from September 6th 1976 demonstrate a real transformation when you consider the abysmal ‘state’ Elvis was in just over a week previously at the dreadful ‘Houston’ 28th August show. Elvis was focused and put in more energy than Colonel Parker's double-booking probably deserved.
This FTD features both of Elvis' Huntsville concerts on September 6th 1976.

- 'How RCA Brought Elvis To Europe' - Book: This beautifully designed book contains unseen pictures and follows Elvis ascent from hottest act in The South via US stardom to becoming RCA Victor's spearhead as the company launched the RCA label worldwide in 1956. It goes on to show how Europe was completely won over by the early 1960's.
The earliest international Elvis records are listed, and there is a guide to identify Elvis records from all European countries, including a summary of the earliest releases from each country. There are complete illustrated discographies (including variants) for all Nordic countries: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. There is also a guide to first pressings of the 47 Elvis EP's released in Germany for sale in Northern Europe. |
|
Elvis' reception in the Nordic countries is covered by a wealth of press cuttings, local film flyers and posters, ads, premiere dates, pictures and stories from handovers of Swedish and Norwegian record awards, and much previously unknown record company history. Among many revelations, the most surprising is perhaps how the Swedish company Electra engineered most of the Elvis activity taking place in Northern Europe.
Spliced in between are many amusing short stories, like when three Nordic Royal Princesses sought out Elvis on the set of G.I. Blues, or how the man behind RCA in Belgium started out smuggling records in the wings of his WW2 Royal Air Force Spitfire. Or the time Norway's bestselling crooner met Elvis in RCA Studios on the day Hound Dog was recorded.
The story behind German Teldec's earliest Elvis releases is completely rewritten along the way..
And did Elvis really pose a threat to communist Eastern Europe when he served as a US Soldier in West Germany? Boy, he sure did. All these topics and plenty more are covered in How RCA Brought Elvis to Europe. And not to be forgotten: free with the book's first edition comes an UNRELEASED 1956 VINYL EP.
The book is written by Norwegians Sigbjørn Stabursvik and Hans Otto Engvold, supported by a network of experts from 14 countries.

'Live A Little, Love A Little' FTD Soundtrack Review: 'Live A Little, Love A Little' was Elvis’ 28th movie which at last featured somewhat more of an adult theme.
Billy Strange was the MGM session producer with new musicians from LA’s famous “Wrecking Crew” (Beach Boys, Phil Spector etc). The session was booked at Western Recorders and for the first time Elvis would be recording with a live full-size orchestra.
In a fascinating coincidence in the same month that Sony released 'If I Can Dream' with an overdubbed orchestra, FTD quietly released a genuine studio session of Elvis recording “live” with a full 40-piece orchestra! So what does the FTD CD give collectors? How does Elvis work in the studio with a full orchestra?
In 1968 Elvis was in great voice, there were four quality songs and all backed by a live orchestra. There was a genuine effort on the movie soundtrack to back a movie in which Elvis just couldn’t seem to get a smile off his face.
Go here as EIN contributor Ian Garfield examines this new release, as well as looking carefully at each of the four songs take by take to see what this CD has to offer.

"Baby, Let's Play House": Recorded at Sun Studios in February 1955, Presley’s historic rendition of "Baby, Let's Play House" reveals the comprehensive love for – and knowledge of – the blues. Compared to the Arthur Gunter original Elvis’s version is much more emphatic, playful, exuberant, tougher and scornful. The interplay between Bill Black’s thunderous bass-slapping, Elvis’s audacious, experimental vocal – he makes use of every trick in his rapidly expanding vocal repertoire – and Scotty Moore’s snarling rhythm guitar creates something that transcends such labels as country and blues.
“You may have a pink Cadillac but don’t you be nobody’s fool.” But who is Elvis singing to here?
In this EIN Spotlight respected author Paul Simpson takes a fascinating look at this Sun Studios Elvis classic..

UPDATED 'If I Can Dream' Elvis with the RPO - In-depth CD Review: It is forty years since Elvis Presley entered a recording studio and he seems very reluctant to record anything new. So in terms of releasing a "new" album of Elvis material the topic has always been a tricky one. Now in 2015 as the publicity notes "Elvis Is Back - with a Brand New Album" for the cleverly re-imagined "Elvis with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra" in the highly marketed ‘If I Can Dream’. In the UK and Australia it has made Number One in the album charts, an incredible achievement.
There is no doubt that the marketing has been very impressive - but do Elvis fans have to love everything about it?
EIN checks the facts and three Elvis fans of varying familiarity all provide their own opinions.
Both EIN's Piers Beagley and Bryan Gruszka take a very detailed listen to this new chart-topping release to discover what's good and bad... Go here for our 5,000 word review - Do you agree? Send us your Comments.

Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage!
The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
Go here to our detailed 'TIGER MAN' spotlight as EIN's Piers Beagley puts in the hard yards to check the facts from the fantasy .

FTD "What now, What next, What If? PART TWO ": The FTD label has been doing an excellent job at looking at the recording anthology of Elvis Presley and releasing every significant LP or recording session on a 1CD or 2CD ‘Classic Album’ version.
However, as noted with the recent "ELVIS" second LP release and the Christmas album, there are less and less outtakes and studio sessions left in the vaults.
With our new article “What now, What next, What If?” EIN contributor Ian Garfield examines exactly how FTD might present their future 'Classic Album' releases.
This second article covers the possible releases Speedway; Live a Little, Love a Little; Charro, The Trouble with Girls and Change of Habit.
