"Elvis the Exhibition" Closes in Las Vegas: Westgate Resorts is blaming a "heavy-handed move" for the hotel management's decision to step in and close the doors of the Elvis exhibit less than a year into a 10-year contract. This may not be such a surprise as the Elvis Exhibition was often close to empty and even the first major show "The Elvis Experience" closed earlier than its planned five week run. Back in 2015 EPE promised "After the debut show of "Elvis Experience" Westgate will feature other Graceland-produced live shows in the Elvis Presley International Showroom" however no further Elvis shows ever materialised.
Mark Waltrip, chief operating officer of Westgate Las Vegas, said the move was "a protective action" after the tenant notified the hotel ownership in midweek about plans to shutter |
|
"Graceland Presents: Elvis the Exhibition." The dispute is with the tenant, a licensee of Graceland, the Elvis estate, Waltrip said.
"They owe us quite a substantial amount of money for the improvements we made on the space. Unfortunately they took a heavy-handed move. They were threatening to default, so we had to close the premises and protect the asset."
He said Westgate closed the 28,000-square-foot exhibit so they could "secure the contents until we can sort this out." When it opened in April, a Graceland executive said the exhibit had about 350 pieces from the Graceland collection.
The licensee's action came during the same week that it was learned the Westgate has received permission to change Riviera Boulevard to Elvis Presley Boulevard.
It got ugly fast. Waltrip said the licensee "notified the county and told them they don't want the street names after Elvis. We're very saddened this particular group has taken such a capricious and possibly damaging action. They thought they would hurt us. But it's more damaging to the legion of Elvis fans.
"Meantime," Waltrip said, "everything is safe, locked, and we'll wait until we hear from the estate."
Sue L from the local Las Vegas Elvis Fan Club notified EIN that "Someone at the hotel verified it closed Feb 26 2016 very early in the morning. The exhibit & wedding chapel all-employees were escorted off the property. A hotel representative noted that if you have tickets or reservations for exhibit or the chapel call their respecting numbers/ Box office to see about a refund. So sad."
EIN also thanks Tony S for the early confirmation of the story. With Elvis being such a large part of Las Vegas' legacy this is a real shame. - No Comment from EPE as yet.

Author Joseph Rene comments on Elvis and Dr. Nick: I have just heard that Dr Nick passed away, and I would like to send my sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
I have also read again the interview he gave you in 2010 where he explained in veiled terms that Elvis Presley needed very strong medication for some condition he-Dr Nick- never really explained.
I know my findings will shock some fans, but the condition Dr Nick doesn’t clearly states regarding his patient is that Elvis Presley was without doubt suffering from a very serious case of schizophrenia, and was being cured for that. The reasons and the evidence for such mental disease readers will find in my book “Elvis, The Numbers”.
|
|
The issue here, and therefore the misinterpretation of Dr Nick’s role in Elvis Presley’s life, is that such condition-and the way to treat it- was fairly unknown back in the Seventies and research in my book “Elvis, The Numbers” clearly shows that most medication Elvis Presley was using were recommended to cure mental illness. But such very strong medicine also had extremely severe side effects, which in turn had to be addressed with further treatment. Again, this is extensively documented in my book, and backed up with due research and evidence.
Neuroscience was still in its infancy in the days Dr Nick was Elvis Presley’ physicist and treating such mental illness was taking its first faltering steps.
I regret nobody ever admitted such facts yet, but I suppose that Elvis Presley’s illness had to be kept secret in order to preserve his image, the legend. However, as opposed to the legend and as far as the man was concerned, such condition does not diminish someone or make them retarded or mentally defective-just different... And God knows Elvis Presley was different, the only one of his kind. - Sincerely, Joseph Rene.

'Elvis Presley in MONO' New Import Box-set: Elvis Presley in MONO is how most listeners first heard Elvis in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was the predominant audio format. Until 1968, each Elvis album was given a unique MONO and STEREO mix, but Elvis always regarded the MONO mix as primary. This was also true for singles. Up until affordable home STEREO systems in the late 1960s, the record industry always regarded STEREO as secondary, going back to its debut in the late 1950s. MONO singles, EPs and LPs were the standard for retail and radio. Simply put, MONO had all of the sound mixed in a single channel and was meant to be listened to on a turntable with a built-in speaker, a car radio, or a stand-alone AM radio receiver. The goal was to create MONO master takes with as much clarity and power as possible.
When EMI released MONO masters of the Beatles in 2009, they received rave reviews. Left out in the cold were Elvis’ loyal fans. Somehow, SONY didn’t see a reason why they might want the pleasure of listening to |

his original MONO mixes. Elvis' acclaimed MONO tracks have been newly-mastered for CD, using the best digital technology. The result is a perfect reproduction of Elvis' original MONO vinyl sound!

'Dr. Nick' Nichopoulos, dead at 88: Elvis' former personal doctor, George Nichopoulos died on Wednesday, he was 88. After Elvis' death "Dr. Nick" was often accused of over-prescribing drugs that would have hastened the King of Rock and Roll's early demise.
In 1981, Nichopoulous was acquitted on charges that he overprescribed drugs to Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and seven others.
In interviews Dr. Nick alwasy stated that, "I don't regret any of the medications I gave him. They were necessities."
He also said that he did not want his grandchildren to grow up thinking of him as a "Dr. Feelgood" who killed Elvis.
Nichopoulos wrote a book in 2009 called "The King and Dr. Nick." In it, the doctor said he wanted to tell the world he was tired of being accused of hastening Elvis' death.
He and his attorney, Dan Warlick, said drugs in Elvis' system were not at "toxic or lethal levels" when he died. "He died a natural death."
Most of the autopsy team at Baptist Memorial Hospital attributed the death to "polypharmacy" or drug interaction, but former medical examiner Dr. Jerry Francisco said in 2008 he stands by his 1977 ruling that Elvis died of cardiac arrhythmia, not drugs.
Nichopoulous is survived by Edna his wife and three children.
The funeral will be Saturday, February 27 at the Poplar Avenue funeral home.
In 2010 Dr Nick gave an exclusive one-on-one interview with EIN's Nigel Patterson.

"Dr. Nick" talks to EIN: Dr. George Nichopoulos was Elvis' personal physician for many years. In the Elvis story it appears that "Dr. Nick", along with Priscilla Presley, are figures either loved or hated by fans. There does not appear to be any in-between.
In 2010 Nick took time out to speak to EIN's Nigel Patterson about his life, Elvis, and how Elvis' death has impacted his life.
In a fascinating and revealing interview, Dr. Nick talks about many issues of interest to fans, from the powerful themes of trust and betrayal to Elvis' death, (including the issues of polypharmacy and bone cancer), Elvis' major medical conditions, the "other" doctors Elvis used, being Jerry Lee Lewis' road manager!, and Elvis' autopsy.
Dr. Nick clarifies what Elvis' major life threatening condition was and the role of the media in how he has been perceived by many fans since Elvis' death. He also corrects a number of widely believed misconceptions in the Elvis story and cogently provides a much needed different perspective on events. (Feb 2010)

Las Vegas gets its very own "Elvis Presley Boulevard": Almost four decades after his death, Elvis Presley is getting a street named after him in the city where he rocketed back to prominence. With the upcoming implosion of the Riviera hotel-casino, Riviera Boulevard will be renamed Elvis Presley Boulevard.
It will start at Las Vegas Boulevard, cross Paradise Road and loop through the valet area of the Westgate, where Elvis launched his comeback in 1969 when Kirk Kerkorian opened The International. The name was later changed to the Las Vegas Hilton and the LVH before time-share king David Siegel bought the property in summer 2014 and renamed it Westgate.
Naming a street in Presley's honor is long overdue. |
|
"The King of Rock 'n' Roll" had an eight-year run of 646 sellout performances in the 2,000 seater main theater from July 1969 to December 1976.
The President of the Elvis Viva Las Vegas club notes, "Why didn't Elvis have a major street or boulevard before? Very simply, no one ever thought of it or stepped up to do the work to name a street after him, or the opportunity did not present itself. As for myself, I have made my attempt at honoring Elvis here. I learned I did not have the resources to follow the policies of street naming according to laws of Clark county. I am grateful that the Westgate had the insight to pay attention to take advantage of this opportunity!
For any of you who might say “This is long over due. It should have happened a long time ago.” -- That’s easy to say when you haven’t looked into it. I wonder what effort, if any, that you have put into seeking this goal. It really doesn’t matter when this happened; all that matters is that we have this now! Let's just celebrate! - Sue L, President, Viva Las Vegas club

Elvis Pianist Tony Brown Arrested: Tony Brown the music producer and former record label executive who has worked with Elvis Presley, George Strait, Vince Gill and many others, was arrested last week and charged with domestic assault resulting in bodily injury. Tony Brown was Elvis' pianist from 1975 until his very final performance - it was in April 1976 that he officially replaced Glen Hardin.
Brown’s wife of nearly eight months brought the charges against him, saying he pushed and choked her after an argument in September.
In his time in the industry, Brown has won four Grammy Awards and four ACM Awards. For 19 years he was the president of MCA Records before founding Universal South Records in 2002. He began his career as a piano player for Elvis Presley and then Emmylou Harris.
In the past Tony Brown has said of Elvis, "I discovered that Elvis was just a regular guy who grew up being a superstar. Elvis' life became totally surreal. However at the heart of it all Elvis was so real, a guy from Tupelo, a true southerner at heart. He loved Gospel music, he loved the church, loved his mother, loved his fans and was totally fascinated by being everyone's fantasy "Elvis Presley".
|
|
He lived such an amazing life and enjoyed sharing it with his friends, giving away cars and jewellery and watches and all that stuff.
The last time I saw him was at the final June 26th concert in Indianapolis. I remember that a couple of days before I was walking along with all the musicians towards the stage, when Elvis walked in the back door and of all things Elvis called out my name. So I stopped and turned around. Elvis said, "Hey, Tony". So I walked back to him and he changed his mind saying, "Oh, forget it." But that was a surreal moment for me as I had always hoped that we could have continued that intimate conversation - I really think that had Elvis had lived we would have become good friends."

New York's recording studio 'The Magic Shop' closes after 28 years: It was David Bowie's "secret" recording studio for his last two albums as well as holding an Elvis Presley connection. Sadly the studio founder and four-time Grammy winning producer Steve Rosenthal, who has worked with everyone from Lou Reed to Norah Jones to Presley's original masters said he has been forced out by sky-high Soho rents.
There is nothing about the building behind the grey metal door covered in graffiti on Manhattan’s Crosby Street to draw attention. A small white buzzer has come loose, and an even smaller white label beneath it - “The Magic Shop” - give little clue that inside is one of the oldest and most famous recording studios in the city.
Perhaps the low key, down-to-earth vibe is what drew David Bowie to the building to record his last two albums.
Since 1998 a “who’s who” of music’s great and good have made pilgrimages to Crosby Street. They include Bowie, Lou Reed, |
|
Noah Jones, Suzanne Vega, Foo Fighters and the Ramones.
The sad news is that arguably New York’s greatest music institution is closing on 16 March, forced out by the sky-high rents of Soho.
Steve Rosenthal worked with producers Rob Santos and Ernst Jorgenson and assistant Kabir Hermon to digitally restore and mix the "Elvis At Stax" recordings for their 2013 release as well as 'Aloha from Hawaii' (2013) and 'Elvis Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis' (2014) from their original multi-tracks for reissue on Sony Legacy.
“I’ve never been one of the studio owners to go in there and tell stories of the old days or whatever,” said Steve Rosenthal, “People are coming here, they’re under a lot of pressure, they want it to be great, the last thing they need is some dude going in there and babbling.”
The four-time Grammy winning producer still has a building stuffed with boxes and recording equipment.
For David Bowie's last album he arrived at the studio for one week in January, February and March last year, and the staff were forbidden to say a word. (Above: Tony Visconti, David Bowie and Brian Thorn at the Magic Shop.)
“I got the record the day it came out and it was amazing to listen to it; it’s so dark and I really didn’t understand it - and clearly after he passed what the record was about and what he was trying to say became so clear,” said Mr Rosenthal.

'Live In Las Vegas' New Import CD: Coming soon from the new label "Universum Productions" is the almost complete Dinner Show from August 7,1969.
The publicity notes... This performance is an Audience Recording at the International Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. It has a familiar sound like other already released audience recorded tapes of that period. We would classify it "average"....ask for a sample and we´re sure you weren´t disappointed.
The show itself of course is really great.
EIN Note: the publicity hardly sells it to you - and EIN has heard a sound sample which sounds very "tinny", not even "average" audience recording quality.
Why not stick to the high-class 'Return Of The Prodigy' from a few nights before instead?

Elvis related Tupelo House For Sale: The wood frame house at 1241 Kelly Street doesn’t stand out from others in the East Tupelo neighborhood, but it has a unique history. “The Presleys lived here and I spent a night or two in this house with Elvis,” said Guy Harris, who was a boyhood friend of Elvis, and he says this house is the last East Tupelo home the Presleys lived in before moving to Memphis in 1948.
Harris remembers carefree days playing with his friend in these streets. “These streets weren’t paved back in those days, they were dirt streets, they would bring a grader along, we would play in those streets, play ball and that kind of stuff,” Harris said.
|
|
The house has been vacant for more than a year. It is owned by Buddy Palmer. Recently, the house was listed on Ebay, but there were no buyers. Now, Palmer wants to give the house away.
“We’re trying our best to come up with a place to keep it, or I’m going to have to demolish it,” Palmer said.
Preliminary work on the expansion of the parking lot is underway, so there is still a small window of time for someone to step in and save an early piece of Elvis history.
If you would like more information on the Elvis house, call Buddy Palmer at 662 255 1454.

Donald Trump, Lisa Marie and Michael Jackson: Donald Trump has been branded a 'fool' after comments he made about Michael Jackson having sex with Elvis Presley's daughter Lisa Marie - and has provoked the wrath of Jackson's family after making lewd claims about the late King of Pop's sex life and tragic passing. Jermaine Jackson accused the presidential candidate of name-dropping and peddling lies in a bid to win votes.
During an interview at the CNN Republican town hall in South Carolina, the mogul claimed that Billy Jean hit maker had enjoyed a week-long sex-session with his former wife Lisa-Marie Presley. He alleged that the pair hired one of his luxury apartments for their romp.
Speaking about the power couple's 1994 honeymoon he said: "I knew Michael Jackson very well. He lived in Trump Tower for a long period of time. He actually got married – you know, to Lisa Marie Presley – and had a big deal at Mar-a-Lago. He was up |
|
there one week with her, and he never came down, so I don't know what was going on, but they got along.
"People say they didn't get along but let me tell you they were there for a week and didn't come down at all."
Trump's outpouring also included a tale which blamed Jackson death on a loss of all self-esteem due caused by botched surgeries. Trump said: "He lost all his confidence. Honestly because of bad, bad, bad surgery. He had people that did numbers on him that was just unbelievable. And when you lose your confidence in something you can even lose your talent."

Kathy Westmoreland Recovering in Hospital: It has not been a good few days for Elvis' soprano backing-singer Kathy Westmoreland who was hospitalised in Los Angeles earlier this week with a health scare. Friends were asking for everyone to please send her prayers and support.
However the good news is that her health is improving and that she is feeling somewhat better.
Elvis and Kathy had a similar interest in spiritual matters and they both liked the same kind of books, such as Joel S. Goldsmith's The intimate way and Kahlil Gibran's The impersonal life. According to Kathy, it was Elvis and Kathy singing "How Great Thou Art" together informally that made Elvis decide to put that gospel song into his show. Their relationship became more than just friends ..
In 1987 she published the book 'Elvis And Kathy' (see EIN's review here)

'Elvis & Nixon' Movie Poster: The theatrical US release date and latest poster for Elvis & Nixon, Liza Johnson’s comedy-drama about Elvis Presley’s historic meeting with President Richard Nixon at the White House in 1970 has been released. The film, which stars Michael Shannon as Presley and Kevin Spacey as Nixon, will open in the US on April 22.
Underscoring the notion that truth is sometimes stranger than fiction, Elvis & Nixon recounts the fateful December morning when the King of Rock ’n’ Roll showed up on the lawn of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. to request a meeting with The President. Presley was indeed granted an audience with Nixon, and asked to become a “federal agent at large” to help fight the war on drugs.
As the trailer shows, Nixon was initially reluctant to meet with Presley but he ultimately agreed to meet with the rock legend in an effort to boost his own popularity among youths. "He's one of the most famous men on the planet. He loves guns and hates the Beatles," Nixon advisor Egil Krogh, played by Colin Hanks, tells the president to convince him to meet with Presley. "The Beatles, well I don't like them," Nixon growls back.
Presley's meeting with Nixon was kept secret for nearly two years before The Washington Post uncovered the encounter; the photo of Presley and Nixon shaking hands remains the most requested photograph at the National Archives.

Elvis Costello's Performs 'Mystery Train' at the Opry!: Elvis Costello called himself after his musical hero and has often performed Presley cuts in his concerts - including 'Suspicious Minds' live in both Memphis and Glastonbury.
On January 3rd, 1982, Elvis Costello played the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. It was his first and only U.S. date that year and one of just three in the States in support of his LP Almost Blue.
Costello later played the Opry's original home at the Ryman Auditorium in 1999 and 2004, but his first-ever Grand Ole Opry appearance finally took place on February 18th, 2006. At the time, the Opry was telecast each week on GAC (Great American Country), and would occasionally relocate from the Opry House to the Ryman, last the long-running live radio show's official home in 1974. Although titled Grand Ole Opry Live, the episode that featured Costello along with Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, was broadcast on February 28th. But the most |
|
unusual aspect of this particular episode was that it was presented in black-and-white, something the Opry's various television incarnations hadn't been seen in for decades.
In addition to the vintage look of the show, which also featured original TV ads for Martha White flour, the material the performers chose was more classic than modern.
Introducing the show's riotous penultimate number, "Mystery Train," the musician - born Declan McManus - tells the audience, "I didn't always have this name that I've got now. Somebody had it before I had it, so we figured we should do one of his songs, what do you say?" Recorded by the "other" Elvis in 1955 for Sun Records, the tune has been cut by dozens of acts throughout the next six decades, including Neil Young, the Jerry Garcia Band, and in 1986 by Harris, offstage for this rendition.

Chinese Invest in Elvis Hologram company: In an interesting move, two Chinese companies announced last week that they would invest in Pulse Evolution to bring back Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson in virtual hologram form.
Zhao Rui, CEO of Original Force Animation, announced that they have invested in Pulse Evolution to explore the virtual world. It is believed that Original Force Animation and Shanghai U9 Game Co. have invested US$10 million into Pulse Evolution headed by John Textor to explore the market for digital virtual characters.
Original Force and U9 Game will have seats on the board of Pulse Evolution and will participate in the operation of the company. "Investing in Pulse Evolution is in consideration of Original Force's long term strategy," the executive said, adding they did so to take up a share of the market in advance and place their position on the map in the industry.
Pulse Evolution is now licensed to work on shows of three deceased mega stars, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Marilyn Monroe. (Does Priscilla know this? See below) The executive said they will first present virtual shows featuring Jackson in several selected places in China and that in the next year, Pulse will work hard to pull off an Elvis show.
One of its most famous and outstanding achievements was the Michael Jackson virtual performance at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards in 2014, which stunned audiences and industry professionals.
The Original Force executive said they will do the shows of three deceased stars separately at first, and then they would consider having them perform together. |

The virtual stars will not only appear in hologram shows, but they would be used and activated in various areas such as Virtual Reality, a mobile app, stage shows and commercials. Some observers said the three stars alone can produce more than US$300 million in market value.
EIN notes that back in November 2015 Priscilla told the UK media that no Hologram Elvis shows were being considered. She said she would react strongly against attempts to abuse his legacy and that she's "not quite convinced" by the idea of creating a hologram of Elvis. When asked about where to draw the line with posthumous music, and in particular the Elvis hologram whose rights are reportedly owned by Pulse Evolution, Presley said, "To be honest, I don't know about that."
She continued, "Our partners are exploring different options. I don't think it's full-range usage or a few images. There are ideas, his image in a couple of things... I haven't seen anything to look at, there's a lot of talking at the moment. I'm not quite convinced by it."

'Elvis Live At Del Webb‘s' New Import: Out soon from the Touchdown label a "good sounding" audience recording from the midnight show on May 25, 1974 in Lake Tahoe. Also the recording isn’t fully complete, we thought as it is such a fine concert that it deserves a release. For your information we like to add, that the introductions of the musicians, the singers and the orchestra are missing. Also omitted from the recording is “Funny How Time Slips Away”. “Big Boss Man” and “Can’t Help Falling In Love” are from the same source as the main part of the show, but both are probably from a lower-generation tape. They were first used for the old bootleg "Big Boss Man In Lake Tahoe" to complete the recording of the Dinner Show on May 24, 1974. Nonetheless the soundquality is nearly the same. Added to the midnight show from May 25, 1974 are three bonus songs from the dinner show on May 24, 1974: “Help Me”, “An American Trilogy” and “I’ll Remember You” (first released on the CD “Big Boss Man At Lake Tahoe”).
EIN Note: The May 25 1974 Dinner show was released as a fine soundboard by Fort Baxter as "The King For Dessert" back in 1998.

'Elvis Reaches Austin City Limits' new Import: Out soon is 'Elvis Reaches Austin City Limits' from the E.P. Collector label, live audience recording in Austin, TX, March 28th, 1977. The 2nd tour of 1977 was cut short due to illness, but some of the concerts were surprisingly good, especially the Abilene show on March 27th. In Austin, Elvis performs another solid and entertaining show. Note: David Briggs was replaced by Bobby Ogdin on electric piano and clavinet. Among the concert highlights are ”You Gave Me A Mountain“, ”Little Sister”, ”Help Me”, “Fever“ and ”Hurt”. Special moment: it was the very last time that Elvis performed “Steamroller Blues” – a really cool performance! This show was previously released as “Elvis Slips Into Austin” but E.P. Collector producers were able to locate the much better sounding original audience recorded cassette, taped with two microphones.
EIN Note: The producers say"The result is a rich and ambient sound - ask for samples!" EIN suggest you do - As it is 1977 it better be a great audience recording to make it worthwhile.
The CD is packaged in a nicely designed digipak filled with a positive concert review from the local press and a collection of cool images.

Sunday 14 February 2016 - - - Happy Valentine's Day - - - |
Make Your Valentine's Day, "ELVIS Day"! If you are someone who feels a tightness in your chest and teardrops swell in your eyes when you listen to a sublime Elvis song, then perhaps no one but Elvis can make your Valentine's Day! You are almost certainly a baby boomer and you owe this to Elvis before you go - it is time to rename Valentine's Day as "Elvis Day".
Valentine's Day is the ultimate celebration of love, the most precious of human feelings, personified by Elvis as no one else has. This is borne out by the titles he chose for his songs and their lyrics, with almost all of his best songs featuring love and heartache.
What makes Elvis uniquely deserving is the emotionall avalanche of each of his songs, delivered with powerful voice, intonation, timbre and mountains of emotion to someone in front of him, making you feel that someone was no one but you. Arguably even Luciano Pavarotti's superb delivery of the original "O Sole Mio" has never achieved the emotional turmoil of "It's Now or Never" by Elvis in listener's minds.
In today's competitive world of modern electronic media and entertainment, with different values dominated by the likes of Adele and One Direction, the softer qualities of love, |
|
romance and angst of separation and loss, which endeared Elvis and his music to a generation, do not find much of chance to survive.
In the broken down social fabric of today, you can even find friends you can bang with just by a click, there is less and less people to listen to and experience the inexplicable emotional trips to fantasy worlds of joy and sorrow only Elvis songs can take you.
It is sad that whole new generations are really missing out on something which generations of parents and grand parents were granted to experience but have no real means of passing on, like lessons in text books or in curriculum.
Numbers like "Can't Help Falling in Love", "Always on My Mind", "Love Me Tender", " I Just Can't Help Believin", "I will hold you in my heart" or "The Thrill Of Your Love" or "Let It Be Me" which are indeed immortal might possibly be missed by the younger generations.
Last year's Valentine's Day was hi-jacked in the world media by the release and progaganda for the movie version of "Fifty Shades Of Grey". So maybe this year fans should "Reconsider Baby" a little LUST for Elvis as well as LOVE! |
|
Let us show our love of Elvis, for a start, let us call this Valentine's Day in 2016, "ELVIS Day"!

Hundreds Attend "Million Dollar Quartet" TV series Casting Call. When the future King of Rock n' Roll performed in a Humes High talent show on April 9, 1953, the school program misspelled the guitar-strumming senior's surname as "Prestly."
A different type of talent show took place at that same school Saturday, in an event that testified to the enduring appeal of the alumnus whose name - Elvis Presley - would be world famous within three years of his graduation.
Several hundred rockabilly cats, soul shouters, sweater girls, squares, rubes, bobby soxers and other would-be avatars of the 1950s showed up at Humes school to audition for "Million Dollar Quartet," the ambitious CMT drama about the birth of rock and roll that will be filmed in Memphis this spring and summer.
The auditions required the aspiring actors to follow in the literal footsteps of Elvis. With Sun Records founder Sam Phillips as its focus, the eight-episode first season of "Million Dollar Quartet" will take place from 1950 to 1954, so the producers were searching not just for teenage versions of the title foursome but also for B.B. King, Marion Keisker, Vernon Presley and other key figures in the origins of postwar American popular music.
|
|
Organized by the production with assistance from the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission, Saturday's casting call was extraordinarily well-managed and orderly.
While vintage rockabilly and doo-wop music blared from loudspeakers in the gym, participants received gifts and coupons from Sun, Graceland and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, while executive producer Leslie Greif — whose Thinkfactory Media company is producing the show for CMT — fired up the crowd.
"People in Memphis are not the same as people in New Jersey or California, so we're here with the absolute hope that we will find fabulous talent that's indigenous to Memphis."

Priscilla, Elvis and Graceland: The new Graceland hotel will open in October 2016, with the $70 million project providing 450 rooms for guests to stay in.
Priscilla is supervising the designs directly, and she explained the idea behind The Guest House at Graceland referred back to how Elvis to accept guests.
“When Elvis had friends and family visit Graceland, he would have them stay at a hotel nearby. He would have been thrilled to have had his own hotel where they could stay. Lisa and I, and our entire family, are excited that visitors from around the world will soon get to experience our unique resort hotel - The Guest House at Graceland.”
Guests hoping to stumble into Priscilla may be slighting disappointed, though. A fan asked her if she slept at Graceland when visiting, but it turns out the Elvis family considers this idea impractical.
“No I don’t,” she replied. “Graceland is open to the public. It wouldn’t really be very practical to sleep there. Whenever I’m there though, I do go after hours, as does the family.”
|
|
It’s not that she is trying to avoid the public, as she enjoys time with fans between her own performances.
“I try to meet fans when I can, between attempting to have lunch between shows and meeting guests… the time is limited. The same after the shows."
If you are hoping to see her in person, mark Elvis Week 2016 on your calendar for August 10, since she says it’s “possible” she will be in Graceland during that time. She noted how Elvis’ favorite holiday was Christmas, but the last time the Presley family celebrated Christmas at Graceland was several years ago.

Elvis' Indian / Roma Heritage: The lineage of persons of Indian origin is set to grow as Elvis, legendary painter Pablo Picasso and master filmmaker Charlie Chaplin are among artistes whose Indian links will be discussed in a seminar by Indian Council of Cultural Research (ICCR).
The ICCR says these personalities “belong to the Roma community”, said to be “descendants of groups in India like Dom, Banjara, Gujjar, Sansi, Chauhan, Sikligar, Dhangar and other nomadic groups from northwest India.” The 20-million strong Roma community is spread across more than 30 countries, West Asia, Europe, America and Australia.
“The purpose of this seminar is to create awareness about Indian origins of Roma community. Origins of eminent personalities like Picasso, Presley and Chaplin would be discussed.”
|
|
EIN Note: While most people are aware of Elvis' lineage connection to Cherokee "Indian" (Elvis' great-great-great-grandmother, Morning White Dove was a full-blooded Cherokee) and the Scots-Irish influence, this "Roma" connection seems new.

'If I Can Dream' Elvis with the RPO UK Concerts Being Planned: As reported first by EIN back on December 27 last year, album producer Don Reedman had noted that plans were underway for a new Elvis Gospel album featuring the RPO - PLUS an "Elvis on the big screen" event featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra live UK concert.
Earlier today Priscilla tweeted a confirmation that discussions are indeed underway.
With the UK version of the 'I Can Dream' album fast approaching one million sales, there is no doubt that a combined live Elvis / RPO concert would be a big success.

'Elvis Selfies' New Book: As announced by the Elvis Matters fan club. In May 2016 the book Elvis Selfies, a collection of photographs of fans taken with Elvis, will see the light of day. This is a unique hard back book featuring unique happy-snaps of Elvis Presley with or by his adoring fans from all over the world. Together with the book is a free 7" vinyl single of Elvis performing 'Kissing Cousins c/w It Hurts Me' - a faithful reproduction of the Italian single - what makes this so exciting is that the wrong tape was supplied to RCA Italy with Elvis singing without the Jordanaires - just to a piano accompaniment.
The book is obviously another collection of Elvis candid photos under a clever modern title. (Elvis obviously did not take the "selfies"). The name of the publisher is not known.
EIN Note: These versions of 'Kissin' Cousins' and 'It Hurts Me' were created by using only one of the stereo channels. You get the same effect by listen ing to the left channel only. This version of 'It Hurts Me' was also issued on the UK album 'Elvis In Demand'.

Elvis' Grand-Daughter Riley on Elvis: Riley Keough sure has that fabulous Elvis Presley sexy smolder ... but she says she is glad she didn't grow up with The King's last name even if there is no doubting the genetic link.
The model-turned-actress daughter of Lisa Marie Presley and Danny Keough opens up about her family in the new issue of Nylon, where she's the spitting image of Lisa Marie / Elvis.
The 26-year-old stunner says Elvis was "acknowledged and treated like what he is, which is a family member. It was never like, ‘He was very famous.’ I was aware of the legacy because I was around it growing up. We were always going to Graceland - but it’s never burdened me in any way really."
"I didn’t have it as hard as my mom. I didn’t have his last name," she adds. "There’s something about that … writing my name, it’s not Presley. That’s heavy."
Despite her unique lineage, Riley says her mom tried to keep her grounded.
"She was like, 'I don’t want you growing up like another Hollywood celebrity daughter.' She was so not about that life, you know? She didn’t really put attention on it," Keough explains. "It was there. We’d get photographed doing stuff, but I didn’t see a tabloid until I was 15."
"I wanted to grow up before I started acting," she adds, explaining why she waited to enter the entertainment biz. "I wanted to live my life a bit. I also really don’t like attention on me.
Riley will next be seen playing a prostitute on Starz's new series "The Girlfriend Experience."

Also on tap at Guernsey’s sale Feb. 27 are acoustic guitars from the late 1800s and one played by actor Robert Blake in the film “In Cold Blood.”
Among the top highlights is a 1952 Gibson Super 400 CES 7-String made for late studio guitarist Tony Mottola that could bring as much as $100,000. Mottola worked with such music greats as Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Johnny Mathis and Rosemary Clooney.
A yellow-and-black Charvel guitar, customized for Eddie Van Halen in the 1980s, could bring $60,000 to $80,000. The original bill of sale made out to Van Halen is included.
A 1959 Gibson owned by Franny Beecher, the lead guitarist for the rock and roll band Bill Haley & His Comets, could fetch $20,000 to $25,000. It’s one of only 57 made in 1959 in the natural finish.
Also in the auction catalog are four guitars associated with Eric Clapton, two of them signed; several Elvis Presley items including a signed guitar; and Jimi Hendrix’s guitar strap from Woodstock.
The sale also includes vintage guitars and mandolins made by string instrument maker Joseph Bohmann and more than 40 guitars from the late arranger and jazz musician Robert Yelin. About two dozen instruments owned by guitarist and singer-songwriter George Benson also are being offered.

Elvis and The Colonel February 6, 1955: EPE has posted a recent blog "celebrating" the first meeting between Elvis and Col Parker.
They note.. Elvis Presley wasted no time winning over fans right from the beginning, thanks to his voice, energetic stage show, style, revolutionary sound and charm. But the music business is just that – a business – and every artist needs a manager to help take care of the details.
From mapping out a tour route to arguing for higher appearance fees, the manager takes care of the business side of things so the artist can focus on the music. At the beginning of Elvis’ career, he met a man who would help him see his goals through to fruition.
On February 6, 1955, Elvis met the man who would become his third and final manager: Col. Tom Parker........... ("Trust me Gladys, I'll look after your son!")

Chart-topping Country-Music star Hank Snow has a rather different viewpoint on Col Parker, "I have worked with several managers over the years and have had respect for them all except one. Tom Parker was the most egotistical, obnoxious human being I've ever had dealings with." - For a deeper understanding please see EIN's article below |
'The Dark Side Of Colonel Parker' - EIN Spotlight: Although comedian Nipsy Russell stated that "Every entertainer should go to bed at night and pray he finds a Colonel Tom Parker under his bed when he wakes up in the morning" - is that really the truth?
It is a fact that after Elvis' death an official investigation found that "both Colonel Parker (and RCA) acted in collusion against Presley's best interests. Colonel Parker was guilty of self-dealing and overreaching and had violated his duty to both Elvis and to the estate."
While there is no doubt that Elvis and The Colonel's story is extremely complex, in this in-depth Spotlight EIN takes a look at the darker side of Colonel Tom Parker - and includes plenty of insights from Elvis’ colleagues and friends.

Tennessee State Approves a $4.3 million grant to MDQ TV project! It’s been 60 years since Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins made a recording in the Sun Records studio in Memphis that brought the singers to be known as the “Million Dollar Quartet.” Coinciding with that anniversary, CMT will air an eight episode scripted television series later this year to adapt the Tony Award-winning musical “Million Dollar Quartet.” (see EIN news story below)
The good news today is that the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development has approved a $4.3 million grant for the project.
The series will be filmed in Memphis starting in the spring.
“Memphis is the birth place of rock ‘n’ roll music, and we are ecstatic to be able to support a television series that tells the story of the city’s role in one of the most influential cultural phenomenon of the last century, This is truly a Tennessee story.”
The series chronicles these young artists’ often jarring and sudden meteoric rise to fame in the face of sweeping political change and social unrest.
CMT is partnering with Thinkfactory Media to create the series. The production company is holding a nationwide casting call for actors to portray the iconic singers, as well as BB King, Ike Turner and Presley’s girlfriend. The casting call will be on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Presley’s alma mater, Humes Preparatory Academy in Memphis.

Frank Turner channels his inner Elvis: Successful English folk / singer-songwriter Frank Turner has already released six solo albums and in his new video for his song 'Mittens' he channels his inner Elvis.
Turner has recently admitted that - even though born in 1981 - he was "Spending most of my days listening to and reading about Elvis Presley, right now. New obsession."
“Mittens is a song about taking a risk for someone letting your guard down. It’s based on a real experience – I was bothered about not getting a reply from someone so I got obsessed with used postcards on a visit to a thrift store in New York. I learned from the experience, use the opportunity to say something meaningful, to take a risk, and see what comes back. The video ties in with all of this – and my Elvis obsession – sometimes it’s still worth it, even if you lose.”

The premiere of the eight-episode scripted series, which will be based on the Tony Award-winning musical “Million Dollar Quartet,” will mark the 60th anniversary of the famed “Million Dollar Quartet” jam session that was recorded by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins in Dec. 1956.
Set in the early days of Memphis’ Civil Rights era, the series will document the birth of rock ‘n’ roll and the rise of the genre’s pioneering musicians during periods of extensive political change and social unrest.

Elvis New Las Vegas "Walk of Stars": Elvis Presley received new recognition on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars this morning when the Viva Las Vegas Elvis Presley Fan Club installed a new star for the King of Rock and Roll outside Mon Ami Gabi at Paris Las Vegas.
Elvis’ star is now located near Engelbert Humperdinck’s, initiating a new line of future stars. Since 2004, the walk project has honored people of prominence with placements along a 4-mile stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard.
Elvis was originally inducted into the Las Vegas Walk of Stars in 2008 sponsored by the Viva Las Vegas Club. The club raised the current $20,000 fund requirement with donations from fans worldwide.
After an unveiling ceremony at the Riviera, the star was installed in front of the hotel where it remained until May when the Riviera closed.
All of the stars in front were removed by request of the new building owner.
The 7-year-old Elvis star was determined to not be in suitable condition to be re-installed.
EIN thanks 'Sue L' from the Viva Las Vegas Elvis Fan Club for the better quality photo.

|
For the new star, the Las Vegas Walk of Stars coordinated arrangements with the Viva Las Vegas Club. The walk organization funded the replacement and installation; the club paid for the survey fee. The star is made of solid red granite, measures 3 feet square, is 2 inches thick and weighs more than 600 pounds. All donor names are on a list in the memory packet installed underneath the star.

(Book Review) Elvis, The Numbers: One of the things that never ceases to amaze is the eclectic nature of themes in books about Elvis. Joseph Rene's latest release, Elvis, The Numbers, is a good example of something very different in the world of Elvis literature.
Rene's work of enigmatic "docufiction" (creative non-fiction) identifies the five stages of Elvis' spiritual life. It is part Elvis biography-part Elvis analysis using occult methodologies with a liberal dash of psychology.

Bowie Matches Elvis UK Chart Record: David Bowie's death has ushered in countless new chart entries, and now he has reached the same posthumous album sale milestone as Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. David Bowie has equaled Elvis' chart record for most simultaneous entries in the Top 40, with 12 albums from his back catalogue now in the ranking. Presley previously set the record for simultaneous chart entries after he passed away in 1977.
Bowie is also notable for being the second act in Official Chart history to have 5 albums simultaneously in the Top 10; the first being Michael Jackson after his death in 2009, when six of his albums ranked in the Top 10.
What has been forgotten is that in 1977 record plants had to press millions of new copies of Elvis' vinyl records just to satisfy the public's demands. This took weeks to manufacture, as well as to ship them into the |
|
stores - now of course every sale is just a "Click' away. The effect of marketing is immediate, the sales instantaneous.
Elvis' posthumous sales helped in fact stopped the closure of RCA's Wearside record plant. In July 1977 it was announced 94 staff were to lose their jobs but Elvis’ death brought the factory a reprieve.
Twelve-hour shifts had to be introduced, as Elvis’ records were effectively sold before they were pressed. The factory went from near closure to 24-hour working, seven days a week.
The RCA Washington plant eventually closed in in 1981.

'Down At The End Of Lonely Street' - Book Review: This 1997 published fan favourite 'Down at the End of Lonely Street: The Life and Death of Elvis Presley'
promised an "intimate portrait of Elvis Presley, America’s favorite music idol, chronicling his remarkable life from a dirt-poor schoolboy in Memphis through his rise as a Rock n’ Roll superstar to his final days in Las Vegas. Drawing on exclusive interviews with Elvis’s closest friends and new documentary evidence, this biography reveals secrets about his relationships with his addictive mother Gladys, his ruthless manager Colonel Tom Parker, his musical rivals The Beatles, and the truth behind his marriage to Priscilla Beaulieu."
EIN reviewer Susan MacDougall checks out this old classic to see how it stands the test of time, look at some of the interesting issues addressed and investigates how the book sees Elvis as a "person" rather than an image.

Elvis Presley on TV: 10 Unforgettable Broadcasts: From 'Ed Sullivan' to his troubling 1977 farewell, Rolling Stone magazine looks back at the King's history on the tube
Although it's hard to believe in the context of today's media-saturated culture, Elvis Presley made only 17 major television appearances during the course of his lifetime. Together, they tell the King's story from his meteoric rise to his tragic downfall.
After making his national television debut 60 years ago, on January 28th, 1956, Presley shattered viewership records, challenged social mores and helped bring the rock & roll revolution into American living rooms. Even on the small screen, Elvis Presley was larger than life.
These are his 10 most important broadcast moments.
1. January 28th, 1956: Stage Show
Elvis' spot on Stage Show was Elvis Presley's first national television appearance. Hosted by sibling big-band leaders Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, the show was broadcast live from CBS Studio 50 in New York - which also housed The Ed Sullivan Show.
The special aired just a day after his first major-label release, "Heartbreak Hotel," and Presley was virtually unknown. He would return to the Stage Show five more times before April. |
|
2. June 5th, 1956: The Milton Berle Show
Presley's popularity was on the rise by the time he completed his final Stage Show set on March 24th, earning him a slot on the top-rated Milton Berle Show.
But before Presley unveiled his cover of Big Mama Thornton's "Hound Dog" to TV audiences, Berle advised him to perform without the guitar. "Let 'em see you, son," he reportedly said.
Indeed, 40 million American viewers saw him, and they were not prepared for Presley's unobscured pelvic thrusts. The episode horrified parents and press, delighted the youth, and made Elvis a star.
3. June 16th, 1956: Wink Martindale's Teenage Dance Party.
Though Elvis doesn't sing, the appearance is a unique chance to see Presley react to his first few months of stardom.
4. July 1st, 1956: The Steve Allen Show
A tuxedo-clad Presley croon the tune to an actual basset hound. It's bizarre, it's awkward, and it has to be seen to be believed.
5. July 1st, 1956: Hy Gardner Calling
Immediately after his performance on The Steve Allen Show, Presley made his first and only live television talk-show appearance.
6. September 9th, 1956: The Ed Sullivan Show
Ed Sullivan initially deemed "Elvis the Pelvis" too hot for family viewing and refused to book him. But when Presley's July 1st spot on Steve Allen scored top ratings, Sullivan reconsidered his position. Presley's first appearance that September drew a record 60 million viewers, 82.6 percent of the national TV audience, making it the most-watched broadcast of the decade. |
|
7. May 12th, 1960: The Frank Sinatra Timex Show: Welcome Home Elvis
Presley's two-year stint overseas with the Army left his American fans ravenous for their idol. He was paid $125,000, a fortune for eight minutes of screen time, but producers couldn't pass up a chance to bring Presley to television for the first time since 1957,
8. December 3rd, 1968: ELVIS
Though he hadn't performed live in more than seven years, Presley was in top form both vocally and physically. His leather getup harkened back to the young twentysomething who drove kids wild on Ed Sullivan a decade earlier. Now he ruled the stage with the supreme confidence of a grown man in total control. The King had returned for his crown. The show was the highest-rated television special of the year.
9. January 14th, 1973: Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite
It would be the first time a solo act ever attempted a live global transmission of this scale, the show crystalized what we now envision as latter-era Elvis Presley, complete with dramatic "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" intro and bold studded jumpsuits.
10. October 3rd, 1977: Elvis in Concert
Released two months after Presley's death, Elvis in Concert is arguably his most controversial television appearance - because it's just so damn sad. The special shows a man who is clearly not well, bloated, glassy-eyed and fumbling through the lyrics of his hits. It also contains the last known footage of Presley ever filmed, receiving a gold record from RCA executives on June 26th, the day of his final concert.

Elvis and The Fonz suggested for the movie Grease?: Few musicals have stood the test of time like the movie Grease. The 1970s film about high school kids in the 1950s has made numerous songs standards today, and turned TV’s John Travolta into a bona fide movie star. But as with most movies, the transition to screen was a long one, and the movie could have looked quite a bit different than it eventually did as discussed in a recent Vanity Fair. They stat that Travolta would have never had the chance to shine if Henry ‘The Fonz’ Winkler had wanted the role and in an unbelievable twist Elvis was rumored at one point to be in the running for the role of Teen Angel. Can fans really imagine Elvis post-1976 appearing in the movie as a bit-part Teen Angel singing "Beauty School Dropout"? In the end the part would go to 1950’s film star, Frankie Avalon (right). Elvis would in fact pass away during filming.

'A Killer Nite!' New Import: Out soon from Straight Arrow "A KILLER NITE", featuring the previously unreleased Las Vegas, August 26th, 1972 Dinner show. This audience recording is taken directly from a recently found original mastertape, as recorded by British super fan Rex Martin. This new source has never been in circulation. Of all the engagements that Elvis performed between 1969 and '76, there is no doubt that his Summer '72 season was one of his finest. Not only that, but he was also operating on a consistently strong level, which is something that you can't even say about the Summer '70 one, which had its fair share of poor shows near the end of the engagement. He was in total command of his art, he looked fantastic and he sang like a bird. Each concert from this engagement is recommended listening for the true Elvis scholar. As usual, our new release is presented in Straight Arrow's standard deluxe digipack, designed with a collection of photos of Elvis, taken during Elvis' 1972 Las Vegas Summer Festival.

'Elvis In Alabama Sept 1976' FTD In-Depth Review: 1976 is not an easy Elvis live-in-concert year to review. There were no major set-list changes, no dramatic "emotional roller-coaster" of 1974 and no high-flying "Huntsville" 1975 excitements. Apart from the exceptional blast of the final December 1976 Tour the year was the inevitable downward spiral.
These two Huntsville concerts from September 6th 1976 demonstrate a real transformation when you consider the abysmal ‘state’ Elvis was in just over a week previously at the dreadful ‘Houston’ 28th August show. Elvis was focused and put in more energy than Colonel Parker's double-booking probably deserved.
This FTD features both of Elvis' Huntsville concerts on September 6th 1976.

'Heartbreak Hotel '- 60 years ago today: On January 10th 1956, a just-turned 21 year-old Elvis Presley walked into RCA's McGavock Street, Nashville recording studio and laid-down his first million seller 'Heartbreak Hotel'. Sounding unlike anything Elvis had recorded previously, drowned in echo and with a melancholic voodoo-sounding tale of suicide and loneliness, the song was also unlike anything in the pop charts of the day.
How strange that this moody, dark tale of alienation was recorded in the building RCA shared with the Methodist TV and Film commission! Sun producer Sam Phillips called the song a "morbid mess" while Glenn Reeves, the singer who cut the demo, insisted that his name was kept off the demo as it was the "silliest title" he had ever heard.
Heartbreak Hotel was released by RCA on January 27, 1956 - It was as if the world had been holding its breath and waiting for Elvis Presley.
On this historic day we look at the true importance of 'Heartbreak Hotel' with a spotlight that nicely places this classic recording in its proper historical context.

Here's the cover and some pages from the book.
'Elvis Files Vol.8 1976-1977' will cover the final years of Elvis' life, the continuous energy-draining treadmill of tours, the final recording sessions and the last CBS TV Special.
While Elvis was not a well man in the last twenty months of his life, collectors will surely find this detailed look into these last years not only an emotional ride but also a part of Elvis' history that cannot be ignored.

Did Elvis really ask Bowie to be his producer: With Bowie's recent death the on-going "urban myth" of him composing 'Young Americans' for Elvis - as well as the story of Bowie being asked to be Elvis' producer continues.
There is no doubt in EIN's mind that - sadly - this did not happen. However as both stars were on RCA there is a possibility that a colleague of both Elvis' and Bowie's might have met and discussed their music and recording.
- Marty Lacker comment on the Dwight Yoakam story (below) is confirmation. "This did not happen. It is sadly another bullshit story by an artist about their connection to Elvis.
Now its Bowie who said Elvis called him to produce an album on him. YEAH RIGHT! Bowie was not the kind of artist that Elvis would like at the time.
Elvis was not into Bowie or his kind of music. Hell, he didn't know who Led Zeppelin was before he met them!
Dwight Yoakam had no connection to Elvis either. Col had nothing to do with Elvis' recording sessions apart from forcing Elvis to do them." |
|
EIN notes however that in an 2003 interview David Bowie says...
"Presley's manager really liked it (Golden Years), and he played it to Presley - and Presley said, "I really want to sing songs like that".
So Parker sent me a telegram asking me if I'd be interested in producing Elvis.
And then Elvis sent me a telegram saying "Good Luck on your next tour. Looking forward to meeting you when you come back".
And it was a couple of years after he died so I never got the chance of actually doing it.
But it was brilliant, I was very, very excited about that"
EIN note the following points...
1. There is basically no way that Col Parker would have any idea about Bowie's album 'Station To Station' and the idea he would pass it on to Elvis in January 1976 is ridiculous.
2. Parker only wanted Elvis to record material from his own publishers (so Col would get a cut), so he had his men positively STOP other composers from getting good material to Elvis.
3. There is not one record of Bowie's in Graceland's list of his records..
|
|
4. There is not one song that Elvis recorded similar to Bowie's compositions and 'Golden Years' would have to be heavily re-arranged for the falsetto to match Elvis' voice.
EIN's thought is that perhaps at the time Bowie co-producer Harry Maslin (or someone similar) ran in to someone at RCA like Felton Jarvis who said "Hey, I like your new Bowie album. I wish Elvis was recording good songs like those"... and the story got back to Bowie. Under his own admission Bowie was on a cocaine binge at the time and has publicly stated that he can recall almost nothing of the 'Station To Station' sessions and details of his life around that time.
However there is no doubt that Bowie was a great Elvis fan as well as being a fantastic performer.

Elvis, The Numbers – new book release by Joseph Rene: A recent Elvis book release takes an unusual and interesting approach to its subject by examining the link between Elvis, symbolism, and numerology. The book description states:
“In the present docufiction, the author identifies five stages in Elvis Presley’s spiritual life:
- The traumatic guilt of surviving a stillborn twin-Jessie-subsequently triggering a state of dual personality
- During which period his mother Gladys supersedes Jessie’s presence
- Then the world reverses at Gladys’ death, and Jessie “resurrects”
- So polarities in Elvis’ mind invert, and Jessie replaces Gladys
- When Jessie “dies”, Elvis’ polarities invert back, and he returns to Gladys via spirituality. With the help of numerology, he meets her again in “death”, as the calculated date of Elvis’ disappearance is highly symbolic with regards to Gladys’ date of passing. That day is also the date of his symbolic Bar-Mitzvah, when Elvis the boy becomes Elvis the man, by an amazing twist of faith. He thus solves his identity issue...his way.”

Bowie does Elvis: David Bowie was a serious Elvis Presley fan, as we all know from his mid Ziggy Stardust UK tour return-flight to New York purely to catch Elvis in concert at Madison Square Garden. (see story below)
On the 25th Anniversary of Elvis' death, August 16, 2002, Bowie was playing The Gorge Amphitheater, George, Washington, USA and in the morning realised that Elvis had been gone for way too long. Bowie decided to do a tribute and quickly rehearsed Elvis' 'I Feel So Bad' and 'One Night' to perform on the night.
While the hardly rehearsed versions in no way compare to Elvis' original (of course), it is great to hear David Bowie acknowledge Elvis' impact and also to hear the story of how he learnt of Presley's death in 1977 while travelling in Africa.
Bowie read the dreadful news in the Nairobi Times - which he kept in Elvis' memory.
As Bowie notes, "What would this 25th anniversary be without doing something by The Man".

Imperials' Joe Moscheo Passed Away: More sad news for music fans, The Imperials Joe Moscheo passed away on Monday night, he was 78. Joe Moscheo is a former member of the Imperials gospel quartet that worked with Elvis Presley from the May 1966 'How Great Thou Art' sessions through to his live performances from 1969 to late 1971. He sang on both of Elvis' Grammy Award winning gospel albums 'How Great Thou Art' and 'He Touched Me'. As reported by EIN back in September, Joe Moscheo had been struck down with a degenerative neurological disease and was hospitalised.
Gospel Music Hall of Fame member Joe Moscheo was known to thousands of music industry and was a musician, as well as a producer, songwriter and an author.
Moscheo was born to Italian immigrants in Albany, New York in 1937. He first went on the road in 1960 when he joined the gospel group The Harmoneers. Within a year, he had moved on to perform with The Prophets. In 1964 he joined The Imperials as a singer, keyboard player and arranger. He also wrote several songs for the group.
This version of The Imperials regularly performed with Elvis Presley in Las Vegas in 1969-72, Moscheo revisited this phase of his career in his 2007 book The Gospel Side of Elvis. He also produced the excellent documentary 'He Touched Me: The Gospel Music of Elvis Presley'. |
|
The Imperials also backed such entertainers as Jimmy Dean, Pat Boone, Roy Clark and Carol Channing. The group won the first of its many awards from the Gospel Music Association in 1969.
He was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2007. This was actually his second induction, for he was also voted into the Hall as a member of The Imperials in 1998.
He continued to make appearances relating to Elvis and The Imperials until his retirement in 2014. Moscheo suffered from a degenerative neurological disease. He was moved into an assisted living facility last year, underwent emergency surgery but was hospitalized in late December.
Moscheo noted of Elvis, "My favourite performance of Elvis is from the '68 special when he sings "If I Can Dream." But he sings, "If I can dream of a better land". It’s so convincing and it’s so honest, and that’s the real Elvis.
Elvis did have his demons. It’s really hard to imagine a guy that was Elvis Presley could be without that. But from being around him in these intimate settings, I really feel that he was a Christian, I really do. |
|
Later on I gave him a Bible - it’s really hard for me to talk about it. I said, "Elvis, I got something for you. I know you’re really struggling, and I know you’re having a hard time, but every answer you need is in this book. All you have to do is read it. It’s real simple now, it’s plain English. Read this book." And we hugged, and I left. And that’s the last time I saw him."

Jan 11 - David Bowie Dead aged 69: In shocking news, today it was announced that David Bowie has died after an 18-month battle with cancer.
Bowie's impact on popular entertainment in the early seventies shook the world in the same way that Elvis did in the fifties. The media did not know what to make of him, his fast-changing musical styles, his sexuality and also his flamboyant stage outfits - they also both happened to be on the RCA label.
In another amazing coincidence Elvis and David Bowie shared their birthday of January 8. Bowie has also stated that he offered his 1975 song 'Golden Years' to Presley, but that Elvis (or more likely Elvis' management) declined it.
"Elvis Presley was a major hero of mine. And I was probably stupid enough to believe that having the same birthday as him actually meant something. I went to see Elvis in 1972, I flew over from London to see Elvis at Madison Square Garden on Friday, June 9th, 1972.
I had a gig on the Thursday night at the Polytechnic in Middlesbrough so I dashed down |
|
to London that night after the gig, got on the plane early in the morning, just made the concert - I got in late to the concert and he was already doing 'Proud Mary'. I was wearing all my clobber from the Ziggy period and had great seats near the front. The whole place just turned to look at me and I felt like a right idiot. I had brilliant red hair, some huge padded space suit and those red boots with big black soles. I wished I'd gone for something quiet, because I must have registered with him. He was well into his set.
Then that night I had a quick sleep and got up early, early the next morning and got on a flight back to London and played a gig the next night. So I literally saw him between gigs. I absolutely had to see him before anything happened to him. Elvis was pretty good at that time. He was still in pretty great shape and it wasn't that long after the black leather show that was on television."
(Right; David Bowie, his wife Iman and Lisa Marie backstage at the 2005 Fashion Rocks concert at the Radio City Music Hall in New York)
Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis noted, "He's one of the three greatest in the world ever - Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and David Bowie. There's no one else even close."
- RIP David Bowie 1947 - 2016

(Book Review): Kings of Memphis Elvis and Tutankhamem (Carolyn Edwards): What do the two Kings of Memphis, Elvis and King Tut, have in common and could it be much more than one might think?
EIN's Nigel Patterson recently delved deep into Carolyn Edweards' wonderful tale connecting curse ridden pyramids on sand swept vistas in ancient Egypt with the relaxing, winding roads of Perugia Way in Bel Air, California. At the centre of the plot are two larger than life 'kings' eternally bound through the coalescence of a powerful religious and philosophical concept, mortal tragedy and eternal adoration.
What Nigel experienced challenged him to consider possibilities quite out of the ordinary. It was a challenge full of high drama, vibrant color and illuminating insight. Read Nigel's review (Book Review, Source: EIN) |

- 'How RCA Brought Elvis To Europe' - Book: This beautifully designed book contains unseen pictures and follows Elvis ascent from hottest act in The South via US stardom to becoming RCA Victor's spearhead as the company launched the RCA label worldwide in 1956. It goes on to show how Europe was completely won over by the early 1960's.
The earliest international Elvis records are listed, and there is a guide to identify Elvis records from all European countries, including a summary of the earliest releases from each country. There are complete illustrated discographies (including variants) for all Nordic countries: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. There is also a guide to first pressings of the 47 Elvis EP's released in Germany for sale in Northern Europe. |
|
Elvis' reception in the Nordic countries is covered by a wealth of press cuttings, local film flyers and posters, ads, premiere dates, pictures and stories from handovers of Swedish and Norwegian record awards, and much previously unknown record company history. Among many revelations, the most surprising is perhaps how the Swedish company Electra engineered most of the Elvis activity taking place in Northern Europe.
Spliced in between are many amusing short stories, like when three Nordic Royal Princesses sought out Elvis on the set of G.I. Blues, or how the man behind RCA in Belgium started out smuggling records in the wings of his WW2 Royal Air Force Spitfire. Or the time Norway's bestselling crooner met Elvis in RCA Studios on the day Hound Dog was recorded.
The story behind German Teldec's earliest Elvis releases is completely rewritten along the way..
And did Elvis really pose a threat to communist Eastern Europe when he served as a US Soldier in West Germany? Boy, he sure did. All these topics and plenty more are covered in How RCA Brought Elvis to Europe. And not to be forgotten: free with the book's first edition comes an UNRELEASED 1956 VINYL EP.
The book is written by Norwegians Sigbjørn Stabursvik and Hans Otto Engvold, supported by a network of experts from 14 countries.

'Live A Little, Love A Little' FTD Soundtrack Review: 'Live A Little, Love A Little' was Elvis’ 28th movie which at last featured somewhat more of an adult theme.
Billy Strange was the MGM session producer with new musicians from LA’s famous “Wrecking Crew” (Beach Boys, Phil Spector etc). The session was booked at Western Recorders and for the first time Elvis would be recording with a live full-size orchestra.
In a fascinating coincidence in the same month that Sony released 'If I Can Dream' with an overdubbed orchestra, FTD quietly released a genuine studio session of Elvis recording “live” with a full 40-piece orchestra! So what does the FTD CD give collectors? How does Elvis work in the studio with a full orchestra?
In 1968 Elvis was in great voice, there were four quality songs and all backed by a live orchestra. There was a genuine effort on the movie soundtrack to back a movie in which Elvis just couldn’t seem to get a smile off his face.
Go here as EIN contributor Ian Garfield examines this new release, as well as looking carefully at each of the four songs take by take to see what this CD has to offer.

Elvis New Overdub Album Confirmed: As reported first by EIN earlier this week (see news item below), the follow-up RPO overdub album has now been confirmed by 'If I Can Dream' producer Don Reedman. Despite the poor sales in the US where more marketing emphasis was placed on the new Elvis Postal Stamp and connected CD, the 'If I Can Dream' album is fast approaching a million seller world-wide and a follow-up album is a definite. Physical CD sales in the UK are already close to 800,000 copies.
Producer Don Reedman told the OEPFC that plans are underway for an Elvis Gospel album featuring the RPO for Elvis Week 2017 (really? EIN expected an earlier release) plus a "one-off" Elvis on the big screen Event with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra live UK concert.
It all sounds very interesting. EIN has already whipped up a possible album cover suggestion!

"Baby, Let's Play House": Recorded at Sun Studios in February 1955, Presley’s historic rendition of "Baby, Let's Play House" reveals the comprehensive love for – and knowledge of – the blues. Compared to the Arthur Gunter original Elvis’s version is much more emphatic, playful, exuberant, tougher and scornful. The interplay between Bill Black’s thunderous bass-slapping, Elvis’s audacious, experimental vocal – he makes use of every trick in his rapidly expanding vocal repertoire – and Scotty Moore’s snarling rhythm guitar creates something that transcends such labels as country and blues.
“You may have a pink Cadillac but don’t you be nobody’s fool.” But who is Elvis singing to here?
In this EIN Spotlight respected author Paul Simpson takes a fascinating look at this Sun Studios Elvis classic..

UPDATED 'If I Can Dream' Elvis with the RPO - In-depth CD Review: It is forty years since Elvis Presley entered a recording studio and he seems very reluctant to record anything new. So in terms of releasing a "new" album of Elvis material the topic has always been a tricky one. Now in 2015 as the publicity notes "Elvis Is Back - with a Brand New Album" for the cleverly re-imagined "Elvis with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra" in the highly marketed ‘If I Can Dream’. In the UK and Australia it has made Number One in the album charts, an incredible achievement.
There is no doubt that the marketing has been very impressive - but do Elvis fans have to love everything about it?
EIN checks the facts and three Elvis fans of varying familiarity all provide their own opinions.
Both EIN's Piers Beagley and Bryan Gruszka take a very detailed listen to this new chart-topping release to discover what's good and bad... Go here for our 5,000 word review - Do you agree? Send us your Comments.

EIN Joyce Bova Interview: Joyce Bova worked in Washington DC and had a fascinating relationship with Elvis that lasted between 1969 and 1972. The story of which she wrote about in her 1994 book, 'Don't Ask Forever: My Love Affair With Elvis' has recently been re-published as an updated E-Book.
Bova was a Capitol Hill staffer on the House Armed Services Committee when she first met Elvis in 1969 in Las Vegas during her vacation.
'Don't Ask Forever' is the intimate true story of two star-crossed lovers-and a revealing portrait of an Elvis Presley that also looked at the crazy day-to-day world rarely featured in other Elvis books.
As the book publicity stated, "It started out like a fairy tale. She was a beautiful, hardworking Congressional aide. He was America's most explosive entertainer. They met one night in Las Vegas in 1969 - a night that changed Joyce's life forever".
Go here as EIN's Piers Beagley recently caught up with Joyce Bova to talk about her incredible times with Elvis and to learn more about the new revised and update Ebook publication.

Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage!
The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
Go here to our detailed 'TIGER MAN' spotlight as EIN's Piers Beagley puts in the hard yards to check the facts from the fantasy .

FTD "What now, What next, What If? PART TWO ": The FTD label has been doing an excellent job at looking at the recording anthology of Elvis Presley and releasing every significant LP or recording session on a 1CD or 2CD ‘Classic Album’ version.
However, as noted with the recent "ELVIS" second LP release and the Christmas album, there are less and less outtakes and studio sessions left in the vaults.
With our new article “What now, What next, What If?” EIN contributor Ian Garfield examines exactly how FTD might present their future 'Classic Album' releases.
This second article covers the possible releases Speedway; Live a Little, Love a Little; Charro, The Trouble with Girls and Change of Habit.
