Elvis sunglasses set sale price record: A pair of Elvis Presley’s glasses has sold at auction in Los Angeles for a record-breaking final sum. The 14K, chrome and plastic custom sunglasses, personally owned by the singer, went for of $159,900 -- the highest price ever paid at auction for a pair of the King’s specs.
Elvis was photographed wearing the glasses on multiple occasions, including on his last summer vacation in Hawaii in 1977.
The Legends of Hollywood & Music Auction saw collectors and fans from around the world frantically bidding both online and by phone. “To our knowledge and research, this is the highest price ever paid at auction for a pair of Elvis Presley’s glasses,” said Brigitte Kruse, owner and lead auctioneer at GWS Auctions, the people who managed the sale. “Our bidders from around the world made this one of the most exciting auctions we have ever held.”

“Elvis: The Searcher” Don’t miss it.: The online Memphis Flyer recently published a neat article by Michael Donahue referencing the presence in one documentary sequence of his fellow journalist, Fred Chisenhall author of the famous headline“A Lonely Life Ends on Elvis Presley Boulevard” published by the Memphis Press-Scimitar at the time of Elvis death.
He writes... I remember getting chewed out big time by the late Fred Chisenhall, assistant managing editor/news at the old Memphis Press-Scimitar. An intern at the time, I misspelled several names of people involved in an art show. I took the names over the phone and I didn’t check any of the spellings. Consequently, the misspelled names got in the paper.
Chisenhall made an impression on me that afternoon. I was much more careful about checking spellings after that. “Chis,” as he was called, was a great newsman. I remember him, later, praising a story I did on an opera “super” - someone who takes bit parts in operas. The story landed on the front page. Chisenhall probably had something to do with that.
I was a copy boy on my last day of vacation the day Elvis died. I returned to work the next day to a much more manic than usual newsroom. |

I recently found out that during all the craziness at the paper on Aug. 16 - phone calls coming in from all over the world and reporters scurrying to get the story - Chisenhall wrote the famous front-page Press-Scimitar headline, “A Lonely Life Ends on Elvis Presley Boulevard.”
Well, after seeing “Elvis Presley: The Searcher,” the three hour HBO documentary on Elvis’s life produced by Priscilla Presley and Jerry Schilling, that headline really made a new impression on me. I loved this documentary, which is such a wonderful, sad Southern story. At the end of his life, Elvis retreated into Graceland. The haunting shot of the columns that grace the porch Graceland will stick in my memory like scenes from a Tennessee Williams or William Faulkner work.
In one scene in “Elvis Presley: The Searcher,” Elvis is at the airport with a bunch of reporters around him. One of the reporters looks like Clark Gable. I couldn’t place the face. Then it hit me. It was Fred Chisenhall. And he was talking to Elvis like they were old friends!
We saw you, Chis.
The first part of “Elvis Presley: The Searcher” will premiere at 7 p.m. April 14 on HBO. Don’t miss it.

Can it really be true that an Elvis Presley documentary as probing and thoughtful as Thom Zimny's 'Elvis Presley: The Searcher' doesn't already exist? After decades of home video performance-film releases and docs of varying quality, this two-part, three and a half-hour film feels like a landmark, something that should be welcomed as warmly as the two Elvis books published in the 1990s by Peter Guralnick. Chipping away calcified layers of myth and caricature to address the psychology behind Presley's career, its seriousness and sensitivity is no surprise to those who've followed the series of documentaries Zimny has been making about Bruce Springsteen. Sure to fare well when it debuts April 14 on HBO, it made for a spellbinding big-screen experience at the music-rooted SXSW Film Festival.
Zimny's most obvious big decision here is to keep every one of his interviewees offscreen, using only their voices to accompany vintage photos and clips. He's not the first documentarian to do this, of course, but few filmmakers with access to Springsteen, Tom Petty and Priscilla Presley would dare to hide their faces from fans.
The choice works for many reasons. It lets Zimny include the occasional clip from a pre-existing interview (including, sparingly, those with Presley himself) as if all were speaking directly to us; it establishes a trancelike tone; and it lets him jam in the kind of local-color footage he otherwise would have had to ditch in favor of talking heads.

So now, when we're hearing from Elvis' childhood friend Red West or historian Bill Ferris, we're seeing the world this "most eclectic" music-lover was eagerly consuming: clips of everyone from Howlin' Wolf to sanctified preachers to bluegrass pickers; street scenes from Tupelo, Mississippi, and then Memphis, where the family moved, a place whose vibrant city life made it as exciting as Paris to small-town newcomers. The town was not integrated, but it was diverse, and the Elvis we meet was busy slipping into black nightclubs and houses of worship, picking his influences, magpie-like, as he assembled "his version of himself."
It's a thrill to join the musician in these years, even if only through the accounts of others, and Zimny follows as the young singer has his fateful encounters with Sun Studio's Sam Phillips. Petty tells us that, "for a lot of noble reasons," Phillips had been looking for a white ambassador who could carry the exciting sounds of new black music beyond the "race records" commercial ghetto created by the big record companies. He got more than he could have hoped for in Presley's sound, which, far from just aping Big Joe Turner et al, mixed strains of music few could have imagined would |

make sense together. Zimny and his interviewees offer plenty of colorful stories from this period, charting a commercial success that happened quickly but only, as Presley archivist Ernst Jorgensen points out, thanks to an enormous amount of work on the touring circuit.
And then came the Colonel. Zimny and company explain the appeal of Elvis' manager-to-be Colonel Tom Parker: The singer had sincere ambitions to act in movies, he wanted to sell records nationally and Phillips ran a one-man, regional operation that could not give him those things. As Part One moves toward a close, we see the Colonel giving his client everything he wants. On his first movies, Presley was so serious about acting he learned not just his lines, but everyone else's. He didn't even want to sing in them, but producers had different ideas. As did Uncle Sam, who drafted the star and put his career on hold.
Part Two is, of course, a darker experience, but the picture is more complicated than even a fairly serious Elvis fan may understand. Priscilla Presley, who made some appearances in the first part, offers much more here, helping us understand how being forced into making a string of lousy movies was one kind of artistic prison, and then being ensconced in casino hotels for his famous Las Vegas residency was another.
In one of very few expressionist moments, Zimny presents an array of cardboard Elvis cutouts in a hazy room, racking focus from one to another: The man who had so carefully created his original persona was now stuck in the shallow roles others forced him to play.
As difficult as things got for him personally, the film presents Elvis as a man who continued to be driven by the need to create meaningful music. Springsteen and Petty reject cynicism even when it comes to the spangled-jumpsuit years. The latter admires the "audacious craziness" of the size of the band he put together; in tackling material others might call pompous, like the Mickey Newbury medley "An American Trilogy," Springsteen admires Elvis for "trying to be a vessel that could contain the entirety of the American experience."
Elvis also wanted to take that experience to the rest of the world. Having never left the U.S. except with the Army, he wanted to tour Europe and Japan, but the Colonel had reasons to quash such ambitions. Throughout the two-part doc, Zimny has returned to footage from the 1968 "Comeback Special," presenting us with an example of how superstardom could be compatible with authentic artistry. Now, at the end, this motif becomes deeply emotional, connecting Elvis' ideals about racial harmony to the political world around him to the heartbreaks to come. It's enough to make those of us who always preferred Presley's Sun Studio peer Johnny Cash to shed a tear.

EPE's Joel Weinshanker Fires back at Memphis City Officials: The complications and arguments over the plans for EPE's new expansion continues and in the wake of yet another delay for the proposed Graceland development, EPE's top exec Joel Weinshanker is speaking out.
During last week's meeting the Economic Development Growth Engine (EDGE) for Memphis & Shelby County board tabled a decision on a bond issuance of up to $20 million for a new EPE 80,000-square-foot events and exhibit facility.
Though EPE's events facility is unrelated to its proposal for a 6,200-seat entertainment venue a plan marred in controversy due to questions about whether it would violate the FedExForum arena Memphis Grizzlies use the EDGE board decided to postpone its vote.
A special EDGE meeting will be scheduled for some time before Wednesday, April 18 to discuss both the exhibit facility and entertainment venue.

Graceland Holdings LLC, recently spoke to the Memphis Business Journal to discuss what he called "statements of facts" about the ongoing development saga.
Weinshanker noted, “We had an agreement with the city to build a 6,200-seat arena in Whitehaven. This was an agreement we had with the chief operating officer of the city, that was blessed by the mayor of Memphis.”
Weinshanker alleged the City of Memphis has repeatedly tried to delay EPE’s efforts to have a judge rule on the FedExForum agreement.
“It is in the best interest of the City of Memphis for a judge to give an order saying yes or no on the arena,” Weinshanker said. “Because once it does, it absolves the city of any liability.”
The head of EPE said he was willing to pay for the venue without public funding.
"They told us they won't allow it to happen," Weinshanker said.

City of Memphis attorney Bruce McMullen denied the claim that the city would prevent EPE from building its venue on its own dime.
"Absolutely not," McMullen said, "The whole issue comes down to Weinshanker's desire to build the venue with public money. You know he is free to build that building, that arena, without taxpayer money. He can build it tomorrow."
As to plans for a new EPE manufacturing facility in Whitehaven, made public last week and which McMullen called “suspicious", a representative for EPE said it presented the project to the city and county last August. That meeting was confirmed by the city to have been on Mayor Strickland’s schedule.
If these Graceland projects continue to be delayed, his company will consider other options, Weinshanker said.
“If the city delays enough, we are going to look at our resources, and we are going to have to use our resources elsewhere. It would kill me. It would kill Lisa Marie. At the end of the day, we are desperately trying to uplift Whitehaven. It has gotten to the point where if they are really able to delay us a year, two years, three years, they are going to put us in a position where we have no choice."
If something like that were to happen, Graceland would essentially stop growing its presence in Memphis, Weinshanker said.

In the mists of time these vinyl bootlegs were stunning classics, ‘Behind Closed Doors’, ‘The ’68 Comeback’, ‘From The Waist Up’ and so many more all featuring unreleased classic Elvis recordings. Sam Theaker aka Vic Colonna was one of the great names from this mysterious world that many fans will recall.
It was the popularity of Elvis Bootlegs that paved the way for Ernst & Roger to create the ‘FTD’ Fan Club label.
Sam Theaker was an essential part of the ELVIS legacy but sadly has been battling cancer over the last few years and unfortunately never saw his brilliant book about the exciting world of Elvis bootlegs published.
Last week Sam Theaker passed away, a great loss to us all.

The Ghostbusters star, who was a regular on comedy show Saturday Night Live at the time, managed to score a last-minute seat on a flight out of New York, and he headed straight for Graceland.
“I just went right to the house and they just ended the visitation,” Murray recalled on TV's show Today. While there, he ran into a photographer he knew, and joined him the next day at the funeral service.
“I ended up in the bus, in front of the cortege, and it was an amazing thing to see, an extraordinary thing to see – hundreds of thousands of people standing (beside the road) on a really hot day, waiting (to get a glimpse of the coffin)…,” Murray shared.
However, the actor feared he was going to be kicked out after a run-in with the funeral procession’s police escort.
“We got to the cemetery and we were there early, there was sort of a riot, people trying to get in, and I said, ‘I gotta go see that,’ and I started running across the cemetery, and as I ran.., all of a sudden the (police) motorcycles came in, and the motorcycle cops look at me like, ‘If you move, we will kill ya,’ and I just froze,”

“All the cars rolled by and they (mourners) were all staring and pointing at me. I thought, ‘Oh God, I’m busted’, but I realized they were pointing at Elvis’ mother’s grave – I was standing right at her grave site; it was a very interesting moment.”
Murray recounted the story as Elvis’ ex-wife, Priscilla Presley, listened from across the Today show studios, where she was due to be interviewed to promote her new documentary, Elvis Presley: The Searcher.
The comedy star admitted he had met Priscilla properly since attending Elvis’ memorial service uninvited, but when asked how they knew each other, he quipped, “Well, we were on Tinder (dating app) together… no! We get along pretty (well), she’s pretty easy to talk to.”

HBO The Searcher – Radio Special: Sirius Elvis radio featured a recent one hour special about the new HBO Elvis The Searcher documentary.
Director Thom Zimny, Priscilla, Jerry Schilling, David Porter (STAX) and HBO Producer Kary Antholis were all part of the discussion
While Priscilla tends to dominate the discussion a little too much and makes incorrect statements such as “the documentary goes from Elvis’ start in 1956” there are other interesting points raised.
Jerry Schilling notes that the work started “over seven years ago” and that they “shopped it around” to various companies before getting to HBO who rightly chose Thom Zimny as the director.
Zimny makes the most interesting points including why he chose the style he did and discussion about early Beale Street.
David Porter (of STAX) adds some soul and tells a great story of him and Isaac Hayes jamming with Willie Mitchell at a party for Elvis and Priscilla.
Jerry Schilling seems to defend Col Parker a little too much. (Where’s Marty Lacker for balance?)
Thom Zimny mentions how he discovered Elvis’ childhood bicycle rusting away at Graceland and how it became a metaphor within the documentary - and also notes how The Searcher is “As close as you can get to the story of Elvis in Elvis’ own words”

Elvis drafted 60 years ago: Rock'n'roll idol Elvis Presley was drafted into the US army sixty year ago, - he was never the same.
Elvis' stint in the U.S. Army began 60 years ago this week, "Black Monday" March 24, 1958. His service lasted close to two years and it changed him forever.
He served dutifully but it was also a dark period in his life during which he lost his mother and started on a pill-popping addiction that would help lead to his way-too-early death.
Elvis noted, "People were expecting me to mess up, to goof up in one way or another. They thought I couldn't take it and so forth, and I was determined to go to any limits to prove otherwise. Not only to the people who were wondering but to myself."
His US army service began at what was arguably the height of his career on March 24, 1958.
He was soon deployed with an armoured division near Frankfurt, Germany, as a truck driver for an officer named Captain Russell. Having begun his working life as a truck driver, he was back where he started.
Soon he would be transferred Elvis to a scout platoon led by Sgt. Ira Jones.
In August 1958, Elvis' mother Gladys Presley died of a heart attack, and he went home to Memphis for the funeral. He would later call her death "the great tragedy of his life."
Another major event in Elvis' life was when he met 14-year-old Priscilla, the daughter of an Army officer, who he immediately began dating. The two later married and divorced in 1973.

During this time, a fellow sergeant introduced Elvis to amphetamines, which he began taking almost daily.
"If I didn't have them, I'd never make it through the day myself. But it's okay, they're safe," Elvis reportedly told Priscilla.
While Elvis was partying and quieting his inner demons with prescription medicine, the rock-and-roll scene in the United States was rapidly changing as the biggest names were sidelined by various ailments.
Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens died in a 1959 plane crash. Chuck Berry was in jail for having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl. Jerry Lee Lewis was shunned for marrying his 13-year-old cousin.
But upon his return, Elvis continued producing hits - such as "It's Now Or Never', 'Surrender', 'Return to Sender', 'Crying In The Chapel' and another return to the top with 'Suspicious Minds' in 1969.
He also became one of Hollywood's highest earners, eventually staring in 33 movies
Sadly it's impossible to predict what Elvis' career might have been if he hadn't taken the two-year hiatus in the service. His mother still could have died unexpectedly. He may still have discovered the immediate pleasures and long-term destruction of drugs. |

He may have bridged that two year gap with some powerful rock'n'roll releases that might have slowed the move to the smooth "pop" of early sixties.
With no trip to Germany it is likely that Elvis would have made the big decision to start touring the world while still fresh and enthusiastic. Imagine those HUGE crowds that would have been there for his European performances! He also might have even escaped the clutches of manager Colonel Parker.
Elvis certainly could have toured the US more often and invested more of his own time discovering his blues roots, which again might have altered the impact of the British invasion and The Beatles.
Sadly Elvis' time in Germany helped put him on a treadmill from which there would be no escape - until he sadly left us in 1977 aged only 42.

'Nashville Elvis Festival' This Weekend: 'Nashville Elvis Festival' returns to the Franklin Theatre for the second year to celebrate the life and legacy of the King of Rock 'n' Roll - MARCH 22-25.
Twenty-five Elvis Presley tribute artists are coming from seven countries, said festival co-founder Brian Mayes. Around 1,000 people are slated to attend the series of concerts and performances Thursday through Sunday.
"We bring in those who knew Elvis, dated Elvis, starred with Elvis in movies and band members who played with Elvis," he said.
Special guests include Norbert Putnam, Wink Martindale, Sandy Martindale, Speedway co-star Victoria Paige Meyerink and Bill Baize of The Stamps.
ETA's include Bill Cherry, Dean Z, and Mark Anthony.
Tom Brown, the host of Graceland's Elvis Week is a co-director, 'We've both been in the Elvis world for a very long time," said Mayes.
To the duo's dismay, there was no designated Elvis festival or event in Music City, so he and Brown decided to create one, through Music City Festivals, their LLC.

Much of Elvis' early music was recorded at RCA Studio B on Music Row, and he spent a lot of time in Music City working.
Unsurprisingly, Franklin blessed the festival with southern hospitality and high rates of local attendance.

'Elvis: The Searcher' a fan review: One lucky fan, Jukebox (from PHOENIX The Elvis Forum) attended the Graceland premiere of the new HBO documentary.
His conclusion was "The Searcher - I've seen it and I liked it, but . . ." and his review's main points were ...
I'll simply start out by saying that I liked it, but I'm afraid it's not going to satisfy every Elvis fan to the fullest.
I personally give it 4 out of 5 stars... very good, but not excellent.
Positives:
1. All interviews or voice-overs were done without showing the faces of those speaking.
2. Commentary from Red West was scattered throughout the documentary, which means that Priscilla obviously thought enough of his firsthand accounts to include him in the documentary. There was nothing mentioned about the book Elvis-What Happened? ... a positive for sure.
3. I liked the way they went from the 1950s to the '68 Comeback Special with some effective splicing... especially with the song "That's All Right".
4. The '68 Comeback Special was sort of a centerpiece of the documentary.
5. Albums that were highlighted in a positive light were...
Elvis Presley; Peace In The Valley (EP); Elvis Is Back!; His Hand In Mine; How Great Thou Art; From Elvis In Memphis
6. Some color home movies of Sam Phillips at play from the 1950s were shown... at a beach and such.
7. Some of Elvis' 1950s voice-overs were new to my ears, which was a pleasant surprise!
8. They showed some unreleased footage from the Elvis On Tour mock sessions/rehearsals... "Burning Love" and "Separate Way".
They used some unreleased close-up footage (from his chest up) in very good condition of Elvis performing "An American Trilogy" from 1973 (or '74).

Negatives:
1. The producer lead the unknowing viewer to believe incorrectly that Graceland was the first house/home that Elvis bought.
2. It was stated in the movie that Elvis never played a concert outside of the United States. No mention of Canada 1957.
3. In the early section of Part 2, they made reference to Flaming Star and Wild In The Country as movies that "lost money". I don't think that's accurate.
4. They made the mistake of only saying that Colonel Parker wanted a Christmas song included in the 1968 NBC-TV Special. In truth, which they didn't hit on, was that Colonel Parker originally wanted the entire show to be a Christmas special. I was disappointed with their oversight on that crucial issue.
5. In Part 2 when making reference to the Aloha From Hawaii tv special, they only showed footage from the rehearsal show...
6. I suppose the forthcoming 3-cd set is for complete songs.
One disappointment was that they only showed about 4 seconds of Elvis with Sam Phillips in Memphis from 1961.
Of Great Significance...
The focus of the documentary by the producers was to attempt to give an honest overview and evaluation of Elvis' musical career.
They clearly wanted the viewers to know that Elvis' artistic decline in the mid-1960s was not due to lack of talent, but due to some awkward/poor decision-making by him and his manager Colonel Tom Parker.

One thing they made clear near the beginning of Part 2 (1960) was that Elvis was now in uncharted territory concerning what direction a rock-n-roller's career should take in order to keep him on top after being away in the military for almost 2 years.
They also wanted the viewers to know that his decline in the mid-1970s wasn't from lack of talent on his part.
Therefore, I feel that they did the right thing by letting it be known that Elvis' addiction to prescription medication played a major role in his personal outlook & unconventional decision-making during the last few years of his life.

Priscilla and Emmylou Harris At Nashville: Priscilla and country-music legend Emmylou Harris posed together at the recent Nashville screening of 'Elvis Presley: The Searcher'.
Priscilla, now an amazing 72-years-old, wore a black vest over a creme button-up top with lace panels while Emmylou Harris, 70, wore a matching ensemble of a tan print coat with suitable country-style dark brown boots.
The veteran singer-songwriter earlier this year was a recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award alongside luminaries such as Tina Turner and Neil Diamond.
Emmylou Harris provides commentary and adds her thoughts about Elvis to the new documentary. She also performed a duet with Chris Stapletonm at the January 28 ceremony from New York City, of Tom Petty's Wildflowers as an homage to the late rock legend, who died last October.
Priscilla earlier this week appeared on a panel at the debut of the documentary at SXSW in Austin, Texas, where she opened up about the depths of Elvis' addiction in his later years.
She said that she and others had tried to wean him off drugs, but his will was strong and influence was overpowering.
'People go, well why didn't anyone do anything? Well, that's not true,' Priscilla said, 'People there in the inner group did, but you did not tell Elvis Presley what to do. You did not. I mean, you'd be out of there faster than a scratched cat.
They would try and no way. He knew what he was doing."

'It Happened at the World's Fair' EPE Blog: Elvis' twelfth movie, "It Happened at the World's Fair," was released April 3, 1963, making this year its 55th anniversary.
"Elvis swinging higher than the Space Needle with the gals, the songs and the famous World's Fair!"
The musical comedy follows Mike (Elvis) and Danny (Gary Lockwood), crop duster pilots who travel to the World's Fair in Seattle to pay off Danny's gambling debts and to get their plane back from the local sheriff. Along the way, Danny plays poker to make some quick cash, and Mike woos a nurse, Diane (Joan O'Brien), and takes care of a little girl, Sue-Lin (Vicky Tiu), whose uncle has disappeared. "It Happened at the World's Fair" was directed by Norman Taurog.

'Elvis Presley - The Searcher' first review: The HBO doco 'Elvis Presley - The Searcher' premiered at SXSW last week and they have now posted the first review.
The review, by Jacob Knight, includes the following interesting points.
- We never see any of the interview subjects despite most of them being pop music luminaries. The voices of Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, David Porter, Sam Phillips, Priscilla and even the King himself float over a continuous, free-flowing montage of footage.
- The Searcher doesn't seem to care about your own opinions on Elvis. The movie's made up its mind regarding Elvis' place in history, anointing him perhaps the greatest American artist to ever grace the stage with his talents.
- In two parts The Searcher ~3 1/2 hours, Zimny takes his time, trying to fill in as much background on Presley as he can before the artist recorded those early tracks. (later) There's those early shows, where Elvis was a "wild animal" on stage, his hips signalling their own sexual revolution as pearl-clutchers gasped in panic.
- After Col Parker.. the understanding of Presley's choices becomes murky. Not even Priscilla Presley can offer up a cogent response as to why Elvis put so much trust into the man who would essentially work evil magic to undo his unruly youthful image.
- We're transfixed by the image of Elvis, as the visuals proceed in chronological order. The legendary performer evolves |

from wild, churchgoing Mississippi youth.. (finally) to a faded neo-opera singer, belly bloated with bad food, guilt and regret - his manager milking every last dime from the King's body before his heart gives out in August of '77.
- Elvis was our loneliest American enigma, a human being who transcended race and economics, only to get eaten alive by the "father" he trusted his career to. The King is dead, but we're still mesmerized by his otherworldly persona over forty years later, barely comprehending the human being who inhabited the icon.
- The Searcher tries to bring as wide a comprehensive lens to the King as possible, and for the most part succeeds in spades. ... it's difficult to fault a documentary this ambitiously spellbinding, as we're invited into the soul of a legend, in the hopes of letting

Joe Esposito on ELVIS: A fascinating 14 minute interview with Joe Esposito (RIP) recorded outside Graceland in 2010 - produced by Deja Bernhardt - has been posted on youtube.
It features some of Esposito's home movies and a lot of it is unscripted comments as he appears to be working on an EPE production.
In it he jokes about buying the 'Lisa Marie' jet from a phone call with Elvis and George Klein interviews him for Sirius radio.
There is a real poignancy about the footage which captures a timely sadness of Diamond Joe looking back from 33 years on.
Joe talks about the wish to get Elvis off his prescription drug binge and there is a real feel about the impact of when Elvis died.

Joe Esposito EIN Interview: Joe Esposito (RIP) is best known as a key member of the "Memphis Mafia' and one of Elvis' closest friends. Joe met Elvis in 1958 when they were both in the army. They met in Germany and formed a friendship over playing games of football and taking trips to Paris. Before leaving the service Elvis asked Joe to work for him, from then on their friendship would last almost two decades with Esposito's main role being road-manager.
In 2001 EIN's Nigel Patterson met up with Joe Esposito in Canberra. He had agreed to give us 15 minutes of his time, but ended up talking for over an hour. This interview was featured in our EIN Fan Club newsletter but not on-line.

Laine Hardy, American Idol and Elvis: In the brand new season of American Idol a upcoming performer Laine Hardy was noted as looking like "a young Elvis Presley'.
17-year-old Laine Hardy captured the attention of star judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan. The judges fell in love with Laine's twangy American accent, before pointing out that he looks remarkably like a young Elvis Presley.
Fans watching at home also noticed the similarities, flooding social media with how much they believed the aspiring singer resembled the "King of Rock".
"Elvis is who inspired me so I decided to do one of his songs," he said.
In addition to his resemblance to Elvis, Laine is also influenced by the late singer already posting a YouTube clip of 'Blue Suede Shoes' as well as 'Never Been To Spain'.
Fans note that he not only looks like Elvis, but sings like him as well.
It will be interesting to see how far Laine goes in American Idol.

"An Inside Look" at Elvis Presley: The Searcher: Priscilla spoke last Thursday at the SXSW premiere of the HBO documentary 'Elvis Presley: The Searcher'.
In this short YouTube video fans can get a first look with Director Thom Zimny and Executive Producer Priscilla Presley as they show a fresh perspective on one of the world's most famous musicians, ELVIS.
At SXSW Priscilla opened up about the rock star's drug addiction and his final days.
She said, "We certainly didn't see it coming. But we certainly saw the journey he was taking."

Priscilla who met Elvis back in 1959 when he was serving in the U.S. Army, said that the singer started taking pills when he was stationed in Germany.
"That was the thing -- they gave them to the soldiers over there to keep them awake. He was on guard at that time. He had maneuvers that he had to do late at night, so the pills were given to the guys and that's how he started. And if you take a sleeping pill, you have to do something to get yourself awake. ... He was in unchartered territory, he truly was, and he did this and tried to do this alone."
During their marriage, which ended in 1973. she said she tried to hide his pills, but he always found them.
Elvis Presley took sleeping pills because he had insomnia and a fear of going to sleep, a phobia his ex-wife says dated back to childhood.
Directed by Thom Zimny, "Elvis Presley: The Searcher" premieres on HBO on April 14.

Elvis Style, Back In Fashion: For spring, men’s designers are rolling out versions of the King’s beloved ‘bowling’ shirts, a casual look that feels right again.
One day in 1952, in Memphis, Elvis Presley walked into the Lansky Bros. clothing store, where Bernard Lansky was tending the till. Elvis, then a 17-year-old usher at the Loews movie theater around the corner, confidently declared, “Mr. Lansky, I don’t have any money, but one of these days I’m going to come in and buy you out.” Amused, Mr. Lansky countered, “Don’t buy me out, just buy from me.” With that, a lifelong collaboration took root. Even as Elvis became a global phenomenon, Lansky Bros. kept him in blue suede shoes and collar-popping shirts. When the controversially gyrating star was invited to perform on “The Milton Berle Show” in 1956, Mr. Lansky outfitted him in the pink and black bowling shirt he wore on air. At the time, lots of men wore bowling shirts on their off days whether they bowled or not, but Elvis took the shirts to the next level with his electric color combinations.
“In the mid-50s when he broke into the scene, Elvis really liberated menswear,” said Zoey Goto, a London-based writer and author of the book “Elvis Style: From Zoot Suits to Jumpsuits.” Six decades later, fashion has adopted a brash Elvis-ish sensibility and designers are whipping up their own unconservative bowling shirts. Most notably, Prada and Ami brought them to the European runways in candy-color schemes that might have met with Mr. Lansky’s approval. |

“My dad used to call them his ‘lifesaver colors,’” said Hal Lansky, who became president of Lansky Bros. after the passing of his father in 2012. “My dad loved to put those loud colors in the window, and that’s probably what drew Elvis to our front door.”
The sort of brightly colored open-collared shirts Elvis helped popularize played a role in defining the breezy style of California and Hawaii, too. “It’s a very surfer look, like in the ’60s when surfers would wear nice suits and camp-collared shirts before changing into their boardshorts to go surfing,” noted Kurt Narmore, the designer of Los Angeles-based label Noon Goons. Bowling shirts walk the line nicely between refined and rebellious. Their straight hem and boxy cut create a crisp silhouette, and striking colors and textures make them more interesting than whatever you’re probably wearing right now. “It’s not your normal oxford shirt or something that’s just a regular shirt. It has more flavor, style and flair,” said Mr. Narmore.
Visvim and Stussy offer shirts in flamingo pink and cornflower blue, while Topman is hyping stripes. Hecho embellished its patchworked bowling shirt with screenprinted characters for an added wink.
The more experimental you get, the more prudent it is to wear solid chinos below (in neutral navy or khaki, please) so you don’t look excessively eccentric. Whether you pop the collar like the King is entirely up to you.

Elvis' blue Mercedes-Benz is on sale: By modern standards, Elvis paid the equivalent of around $55,000 for the Mercedes luxury sedan.
Elvis' 1971 280SEL remains in pristine condition and is currently for sale in St. Louis, Missouri, for US$139,900. The sedan includes paperwork showing the iconic rock star as the vehicle's original owner.
Elvis purchased the 280SEL on December 21, 1970, for $8,764 – the equivalent of $54,828 in modern money. The optional air conditioning likely made Tennessee's hot summers much more tolerable. With 80,312 miles on the odometer, Elvis or his entourage apparently got good use out of the Mercedes before the singer's death in August 1977. After he passed away, the sedan went on display at a museum in Tennessee until 2016.
Now, there's a chance for the gorgeous sedan with celebrity provenance to have a new owner.
As its name implies, the 280 SEL had a 2.8-liter inline-six engine that put out a whopping 160 hp. This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL is well documented and comes with copies of the title registration, the original title (both of which bare Elvis’ signature), a copy of the original Bill of Sale, as well as a photo of the vehicle parked in front of Graceland.

EPE redevelopment, now 1000 new jobs also on Hold: With EPE's proposed new arena venue there was a deal to bring 1,000 full-time jobs to Whitehaven, but after the Memphis court challenges and with EPE's venue put on hold Graceland has halted the manufacturing project.
The proposed $40 million-$50 million venue had become a point of contention between EPE, the City of Memphis, Shelby County and the Memphis Grizzlies. To fund the venue, EPE wanted to increase its Graceland tax increment financing (TIF) district from 50 to 65 percent.
On Oct. 9, EDGE sent out an email canceling the special board meeting to hear the EPE proposal.
In response to the meeting cancellation, Joel Weinshanker manager of Graceland Holdings decided to cease progress on the manufacturing facility.
“The manufacturing facility would have been located in Whitehaven in a site EPE had under contract at the time the 6,200-seat venue was taken off the EDGE agenda. We had spoken to EDGE and to the state about the project, and my client was prepared to move forward with a goal of having that facility opened and people working in Whitehaven by the end of this year.”

A representative with EDGE declined to comment on the manufacturing facility, “since the Graceland performance venue project is still part of ongoing litigation.”
EPE et al. v. City of Memphis et al. was filed by EPE Nov. 15, 2017, asking Chancery Court to rule that using public incentives to help pay for its proposed 6,200-seat venue would not violate the FedExForum arena use agreement.
That case was dismissed Feb. 16 by Chancellor Jim Kyle.
The building EPE would have redeveloped for the manufacturing facility is no longer under contract.
But, McLaren said if the venue moved forward and received the necessary approvals from EDGE, the Memphis City Council and Shelby County Commission, EPE's plans for the manufacturing facility might then be revisited.

'Kissin' Cousins' and 'Easter Eggs' Spliced Takes: Another two "Spliced takes" albums announced.
- 'Easter Eggs' Spliced Takes: This one includes all tracks from the 1966 recording sessions, many gospel songs were recorded, but also some excellent other tracks.
CMT managed to produce a full new album with high standard spliced takes only the STAR team can deliver.
To name just one highlight it has to be the new approach the team did on "Tomorrow is A Long Time" it was re-created from scratch, gives a totally new feel to the song since the "chorus" was used only once and all "verses" were put after one and other. Also a longer intro and outro makes this an outstanding new track!
Other surprises like "Fools Fall in Love" with TWO saxophone solos and an alternate piano intro for "Where No One Stands Alone" confirms: This is a MUST have!
Again the STAR team has done all the edits on this album, and they did an excellent job again , with lots of excellent edits, and surprises. Unlike other “import” labels, they truly were able to produce an album using many incomplete takes , to create beautiful new versions. |

- Kissin Cousins - Spliced Take Special: An incredible new album, featuring extended versions, alternate takes including new instrumental tracks and some pretty cool edits!
Don't think you already heard these! ALL tracks are brandnew edits and sound very rare, The title track for example starts of with an alternate opening and includes the extra verses.
"Gold in the Mountains" has been extended and includes rare alternate musical segments. For "Tender Feeling" they used the alternate take 1 (vocal) and combined it with an alternate musical track, the result is stunning and sound quality is much better then the master version! "Echoes of Love" includes an alternate Saxophone solo makes you feel as if it is a brandnew take! The "drums" on "Catchin On Fast" are taken from an alternate musical track and put in just at the right spot to make it sound pretty cool and different!
Another highlight must be "Kissin Cousins #1" ... for this song Elvis recorded TWO different vocal styles... Here they have "reversed" the vocals, and a complete NEW release is born.

'Speedway' - FTD Soundtrack Album Review: Speedway was Elvis' very last Soundtrack album. With the intention of recreating the dynamic atmosphere of 1963’s Viva Las Vegas, MGM cast hot property Nancy Sinatra as Elvis’ co-star but there was no chemistry between them. The original session took place on the MGM soundstage and the recordings flooded in echo sounded terrible. Luckily the four-track MGM Masters still exist and have been remixed for this release creating the best quality recordings we have to date.
With only ‘Let Yourself Go’ and 'Suppose' as the stand out tracks the album was a very dull affair
However several previously unreleased outtakes of the Bonus songs ‘Mine’ and ‘Goin’ Home’ are also included here, help add interest and make CD 1 a packed 79 minutes.
Remarkably with such lacklustre original material FTD have managed to create a rather worthy classic soundtrack album.

Which of course could all be a ruse to stop her ex-husband getting his share of the estate in the bitter up-coming divorce proceedings.

.... ELVIS is still worth hundreds of millions, but a turbulent personal life and bad decisions have left Lisa Marie Presley virtually penniless as she claims to have just $US14,000 to her name.
Where did it all go wrong for the troubled singer, 50, whose turbulent personal life has been the subject of tabloid fodder for decades?
Elvis Presley placed fourth on Forbes’ annual list of the top-earning dead celebrities last year, earning $US35 million in 2017, 40 years after his death.
On Lisa Marie's 25th birthday in 1993 she inherited her father’s estate, which, thanks largely to the stewardship of her mother, Priscilla, had grown to an estimated $US100 million.
She was owner and chairman of the board until 2005, when she sold 85 per cent of the estate’s business holdings, excluding his expansive property Graceland, which she kept.

Now, Lisa Marie claims her former business manager Barry Siegel swindled her out of the vast majority of her fortune, leaving her with only $US14,000.
In turn Siegel and his company allege it was her own out-of-control spending that led to her perilous financial situation.
According to court documents Lisa Marie owes $US10 million in taxes and $US6 million on her home in England.
Lisa Marie married Michael Lockwood, her forth marriage, in 2006. She filed for divorce after 10-years and with their two twin girls.
Legal documents filed by Presley as part of divorce proceedings paint a picture of an unstable home life, as she battled drug and alcohol problems.
Lisa Marie has stated, "I had to go to rehab several times. I was a mess. I couldn’t stop. The last year of our marriage I was abusing cocaine terribly, it was bad." |

Scientology is also being mentioned. Scientology was introduced to Lisa Marie in 1977 by her mother Priscilla. Over the years she rose through the ranks of the mysterious church, becoming an influential and well-respected member, even accepting a Humanitarian Award for her activities within the church.
But in the past decade she is said to have had a growing dissatisfaction with Scientology, and in 2016 officially defected.
But her mother and 28-year-old daughter, actor Riley Keough, are both still devout Scientologists, and are reportedly fighting to get her to rejoin the church.
Elvis himself was deeply sceptical of Scientology saying after a visit, "There’s no way I’ll ever get involved with that son-of-a-bitchin’ group. All they want is my money."
And indeed, Scientology may explain at least some of the Elvis estate’s missing millions: It’s rumoured that Priscilla gave the church a hefty share of his estate.

Elvis' RIAA "Certified" Album Sales More Than 146.5 Million: SONY / Legacy and RCA Records acknowledge the astounding ongoing impact of the music and artistry of Elvis Presley, whose all time RIAA certified album awards in the US now top 146.5 million units. (perhaps more says EIN!)
As Presley's catalog achieves new Gold, Platinum and multi-Platinum sales awards as certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Elvis continues to inspire, inform and transform popular culture.
Elvis, the second most awarded solo performer and third most awarded act in RIAA history (after the Beatles at #1 and Garth Brooks at #2) has racked up more Gold Records (101) than any other act and is the only artist still earning RIAA certifications whose connection to the association dates back to its founding.

In 1958, the inaugural year of the RIAA Gold & Platinum program, Elvis' "Hard Headed Woman" became one of the RIAA's first three Gold singles and the very first in Elvis' ongoing string of Gold, Platinum and multi-Platinum certifications.
Over the past year, 17 Elvis Presley catalog titles have been awarded RIAA certifications, with 11 of those albums reaching Gold (or Platinum) status for the very first time.
HOWEVER there has always been a discrepancy over RIAA's total sales measurements..
- The basis for RIAA’s overall artist announcements totally exclude singles - of which Elvis is the true king.
- The RIAA certifications are based on documented sales figures but in the case of Elvis the RCA figures are incomplete, most importantly sales during the 12 months after Elvis' death are unaccounted for. BILLBOARD wrote in September 1977 that RCA shipped 20 million records a week. They had as many as 40 pressing plants working overtime to cope with the demand. RCA November releas
- Figures are based on "certified" albums sales, but this becomes VERY interesting because neither The Beatles nor Garth Brooks have any albums that have not been certified, Elvis however has more than 200 non-certified albums which combined sales would also have been yet more millions.

Donna Butterworth dead at 62: Donna Butterworth who co-starred with Elvis in the 1966 movie “Paradise, Hawaiian Style” died Tuesday following a long illness - reports the Hawaii Tribune. Donna Butterworth was a child actress and singer, who was actually born in Philadelphia in 1956 but moved to moved to Hawaii with her family aged 3.
She was 9 and already a showbiz veteran when she got the call to film with Elvis. By then, she had performed with entertainer Don Ho; released two singles, “Sailor Boy” and “California Sunshine Boy”, appeared on “The Dean Martin Show,” “The Andy Williams Show” and “The Danny Kaye Show” and garnered a Golden Globe nomination for most promising newcomer for her role in the 1965 Jerry Lewis comedy “The Family Jewels.”
In “Paradise, Hawaiian Style,” Butterworth played Jan Kohana, daughter of the business partner of Elvis’ character.
Butterworth sang several duets with the King of Rock ’n’ Roll and gained a cult following.

that, so when the director called ‘action,’ I ran up and got in his arms, and his face was about 4 inches from my face. After all the anticipation of meeting "Elvis Presley" and working with him, I just froze. I couldn’t believe I was so close to this beautiful man. All the crew cracked up because they knew I was so enamored. In fact, Elvis laughed the hardest, he just loved to laugh.”
Sadly her acting career was short-lived only remembered for 'A Boy Called Nuthin’'in 1967 for 'Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color' which also starred Ron Howard.
As an adult, Butterworth sang professionally and recorded a CD in Hawaii in the early 2000s.
A private memorial and celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Butterworth is survived by her mother and brother.

'Elvis Presley: The Searcher' Debuts at SXSW: The brand new HBO doco 'Elvis Presley: The Searcher' debuts this week at the US 'South by Southwest Film Festival' on March 14 & 15.
Elvis Presley: The Searcher offers a fresh look at one of the most famous musicians in history, with a dedicated focus on the man as a working musician, not just the caricature that time and fame has drawn. “This is really, I think, the definitive documentary about the artist, the man behind the music,” says Priscilla. Divided into two films, the three hours of archival footage, photo stills, and narration reveal a rare intimate glimpse of Elvis, almost like stepping inside of his private photo albums.

“My heart goes out to him,” she said. “This film humanizes him so much. . He was a genius. ... His management just saw him as a moneymaker.” Priscilla was executive producer of the film,
Austin, a musical city where Priscilla has roots, is seemingly the perfect place to premiere a film about a working musician. With “absolute carte blanche” access to the archives, including thousands of stills and over 6,000 digital recordings, Zimny digs deep into the personal musical history of Elvis. The second film even includes a previously undiscovered recording – “a really haunting vocal” – of Elvis’ mother Gladys singing. Zimny said, “I was chasing those lost details because it paints a much more complex, layered vision of Elvis than had been out there before. I got to hear about his frustrations with his career, and also just his frustrations as a person who loved music, and the destructive force of making those films.”

“I think if there’s any tragedy in the two films it’s to realize that Elvis as an artist was held back,” added Zimny.
To anchor the films stylistically, Zimny decided not to include any visuals of the interviews, instead focusing exclusively on the archival footage and photos, with voiceover narration peppered throughout. “I wanted the film to feel like a dream where you were going back into time seeing Elvis in Super-8 home movies, seeing the space of Graceland as a character, and hearing these voices – the voice of Elvis or the voices of people who spent time with him. I wanted the voices to have this musical feel, and I wanted to be able to play with images and ideas against the soundtrack.”
Elvis Presley: The Searcher explores far more than his greatest hits. Little-known recordings and performances, as well as Elvis’ gospel roots, are highlighted.
A lifelong Memphian, David Porter watched Elvis transform from just a kid hanging around the Beale Street clubs to a major talent who explored the influences of black artists while still maintaining his own style. The legendary songwriter and producer, formerly in charge of A & R at Stax Records said, “Elvis was amazing – not at trying to make anyone think he could dance like Jackie Wilson – but he had that animation and that movement that gave him an individual identity that was just as impactful as it was to watch Jackie Wilson dance at the Flamingo. It just speaks to the visionary parts of his creative mind.
“There are no new emotions, so when a person has the ability to find an impactful way to affect people’s emotions, based on how they are creatively able to do that, that’s a stroke of genius, a stroke of creativeness that’s hard to find,” added Porter. “I think true artists find things about themselves that amplify their credibility, and not every artist has the intellect to seek things in their inner core to do that. But when you find ones that are able to do that, they become the greats, like Michael Jackson, like James Brown, like Elvis Presley.”

- 'Rebel With A Cause' Book/CD Combo. Written and produced by David English & Pal Granlund it features newly-discovered images scanned for the first time from the original negatives - exclusive to this book.
The book follows Elvis between August 16 and September 30, 1956 from his arrival in Hollywood to his return to Memphis. Produced by David English and Pål Granlund, it includes many rare unpublished photos taken from the original negatives.
The bonus CD features Elvis Presley: Rock ‘N’roll No.2 – an album originally released by HMV in the UK. It also features all 4 songs from Elvis’ first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show on September 9, 1956 and a recording off the afternoon performance of September 26 in Tupelo Mississipi.
The book is 312 pages and author David English notes that two more unseen photos from September 56, one of which shows Elvis paying to go into Malco Theatre just made it into the book before printing.

Georgia Elvis Festival - This Weekend: The first Georgia Elvis Festival was held in March of 2013, a four-day festival this year running March 8-11, 2018.
The talent pool is certainly deep this year, with professionals arriving from as far as Germany to perform for the judges. The contest will conclude Sunday with the king being crowned and entered into the Ultimate Elvis Competition in Memphis.
But first there’s a lot of fun and music to be had, attendees flocked to the downtown area to listen to performers sing classic tunes in honor of the King of Rock and Roll. Many of those, both tribute artists and attendees, at this year’s festival are quite young. Too young in fact to have even been alive during Elvis’ lifetime.
“It’s all about keeping the memory of Elvis alive. People don’t understand how big it is until they come out and see it. Then, they get it.”
This year 2016 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Dwight Icenhower is appearing plus Ryan Pelton, Tim Hendry and Brunswick favorite Travis Powell will also appear as will newcomers Riley Jenkins and Taylor Rodriguez.
“It’s so great to see the younger guys. They are awesome, it makes you really appreciate young Elvis too. I don’t think I really did when I was younger. But I do now. And these guys are keeping it going. They are helping to keep the legacy alive.

New Elvis Footage of Toronto, April 2 1957: This Elvis footage came to light in the middle of last year but it was hidden within an interview with DJ Red Robinson and Fred Latremouille about Little Richard.
The clip of Elvis on stage lasts less than one minute but it still gives a wonderful look at the excitement that Elvis generated in 1957.

'Worldwide Elvis Vinyl Discography' - Can Anyone help?: Back in May 2016 EIN interviewed super-collector Paul Dowling about his fascinating Elvis past and in the very detailed interview he talked about the massive Elvis collectors book he has been working on since 1992 - the ultimate WORLDWIDE ELVIS VINYL DISCOGRAPHY.
In our interview he noted, "I found listing notices of Elvis singles, EP's and LP's that either came out and no one has found yet or that were planned and then cancelled for some reason. Plus many foreign releases that no one knows about even now! There are loads and loads of super interesting items I found that I will picture in my book someday".
Paul Dowling is now asking if any Elvis fan can help him finish the project. "I became friends with Bernadette Moore (BMG ARCHIVES New York) and she invited me to go through all of their Elvis archives. I must have spent every other week in their vaults from Jan - May going through every file I could find (including ones that most of the people working there at the time never knew existed) to get as much info as I could on U.S. Elvis releases since I had loads of foreign information already. The idea of course was to do books which would contain information on every Elvis 78, single, EP, LP, promos etc from the following countries that released Elvis vinyl on RCA.

Auckland's 'Elvis in the Gardens' Big weekend: Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Auckland Botanic Gardens (in New Zealand) the king of all free events was back for its ninth year, featuring six hours of top tier musical tributes to the imitable Elvis Presley.
Thousands of Aucklanders couldn't help falling in love with the King of Rock 'n' Roll all over again last Sunday March 4th.
Elvis in the Gardens, a free annual event, had fans of Elvis Presley 'all shook up' and 'dancing to the jailhouse rock' at the Auckland Botanical Gardens.
The King's been dead 40 years, but his devotees still love a chance to be dance to the 50s classics.
Elvis ETA Dean Zeligman, from the USA, was this year's headlining act and took the stage to wild enthusiasm from the audience. Elvis' cousin Donna Presley was the guest of honour.
For many fans it was a return visit they noted, "Elvis is still alive here in New Zealand, I like rock 'n' roll, I like the era. The atmosphere and the fans are fantastic and we love dancing."

Lisa Marie Ordered to Pay Up: Lisa Marie was dealt a new financial card last week in the midst of her ongoing divorce case against ex Michael Lockwood. Inside a L.A. court room, Presley and Lockwood stood beside their attorneys as Judge Patrick Cathcart ordered the singer-songwriter to pay her estranged husband $100,000. The figure is to cover his attorney's projected fees in preparation for their August trial in their divorce case stemming from 2016.
Lisa Marie has 30 days to pay him the full amount.
Michael Lockwood sasy that Lisa Marie is lying about the mountain of debt she claims to be under, and about how much money she's earning. He points out she claimed to be making $104,000 per month in 2016, but also claimed she owed the IRS $1.67 million. Lockwood says that would mean she owes more than she made in income that year
The mother of four was stoic during the hearing and sported sunglasses. Both Presley and Lockwood did not speak during the hearing nor did they acknowledge each other afterward in the hallway.
The ruling comes on the heels of newly filed legal documents from Presley alleging she is more than $16 million in debt, including $10 million in tax bills from past years.
Lisa Marie filed for legal separation from Lockwood back in June 2016 after 10 years of marriage.

Lisa Marie Presley Sues Her Former Manager for More Than $100 Million: Lisa Marie’s legal battles are far from over. Elvis Presley’s daughter is suing her former manager, Barry Siegel, after a failed investment. Presley claims that Siegel, who ran the trust that Elvis left for his daughter when he died in 1977, sold 85 percent her interest in Elvis Presley Enterprises for $100 million in 2005, according to the court documents obtained by Us Weekly. The singer-songwriter says in the docs that Siegel used the money from the sale to invest in Core Entertainment, which is the parent company of American Idol. Core went bankrupt in 2016, and as a result, Presley claims she lost $24.5 million.
“Siegel never provided Lisa with the required accounting at any time after the Core deal,” the court docs read, adding that “Siegel reportedly led Lisa to believe she was in ‘good shape’ with her finances.”
The “Nobody Noticed It” singer, 50, is suing Siegel for $100 million because she believes that she has “been damaged in an amount that has not yet been fully ascertained, but is believed to be in excess of $100 million,” the docs read.
As previously reported, Lisa Marie recently made headlines for her financial woes. She claimed in a court documents related to her divorce from Michael Lockwood on February 14 that she was $16 million in debt. According to the documents Lisa Marie owes more than $10 million in taxes from 2012 to 2017 (see EIN story below) and has defaulted on her debt of more than $6 million from her United Kingdom home. Presley also owes $263,050 in professional frees, $47,844 in credit card debt and an estimate of $250,000 in miscellaneous unpaid bills. |

Lisa Marie revealed her financial struggles in response to a request from Lockwood that she help pay part of his $450,000 in attorney fees. Presley and Lockwood, who share 9-year-old twin daughters, called it quits in June 2016 after more than 10 years of marriage.
Other media report that Siegel says Presley has “uncontrollable spending habits” and he has filed his own lawsuit against her.

Elvis Impersonator becomes Australian Deputy Prime Minister!: The world is a crazy place and 'Elvis IS everywhere'.
While EIN tries to avoid the embarrassment of reporting about most Elvis ETAs, we have to note that today Michael McCormack became the leader of the National Party of Australia and thus - due to coalition politics - Australia's Deputy Prime Minister.
Michael McCormack also happens to be an "Occasional Elvis impersonator"!
Michael McCormack (53) grew up on family farms at regional Marrar and Brucedale. Today he told the media that, “His job is to heal the party now and to get back to the issues, and that is what Australians want.”

Protesters ousted from sacred site where Elvis filmed ‘Blue Hawaii’: State sheriffs on Thursday removed protesters from the ruins of a Hawaii hotel where they have been squatting since last year in an attempt to block redevelopment of land where Hawaiian chiefs once lived and where Elvis Presley’s character got married in the movie “Blue Hawaii.”
The Hawaii Department of Public Safety said in a statement Thursday that state sheriffs arrested 23-year-old Mahealani Hanie-Grace for trespassing at Coco Palms on Kauai.
As EIN reported last week, the protest began when two men arrived claiming they owned the property because they descend from King Kaumualii, the last ruler of Kauai. They’ve been joined by dozens of others.
Police have cited protesters for trespassing. A judge last month issued an order to evict them. The public safety department said 25 deputy sheriffs participated in the raid.
The protest is the latest example of Native Hawaiian activists taking a stand on cultural issues and sacred places. |

Protesters in recent years blocked a road leading to the summit of Mauna Kea, the Big Island’s highest peak, to stop the construction of one of the world’s largest telescopes. That case is currently before the courts. Keala Lopez, who has been teaching Hawaiian to those gathered at the property, said people occupying the site are protecting the land and the natural resource. She said they won’t give up now, they’ll just have to adapt.
“I don’t think it will diminish our fire. It’s inspiring for the community to see us continue. We’ve been receiving so much support and aloha, so that I only feel stronger when situations happen,” she said.
The people occupying the Coco Palms site have been growing taro, a traditional Hawaiian staple, and other crops, she said. The effort is more about having a place to live and sleep, she said.
“It’s a cultural calling to preserve and protect this place,” she said.
Coco Palms has been shut since 1992, when Hurricane Iniki heavily damaged the property. Demolition began in 2016, with the goal of reopening in mid-2018. The clash has caused delays, so the developers hope to start construction soon after the protesters leave.
Coco Palms opened as a resort in 1953. Eight years later, it served as the backdrop for scenes in a Hollywood romantic comedy featuring Presley.

How did prestigious British private school blazer turn up in Elvis’ wardrobe?: The prestigious private school attended by ex UK prime minister Tony Blair is investigating how one of its magenta and brown blazers came to be in the wardrobe of Elvis Presley.
Fettes College in Edinburgh, which charges £33,500 a year, also counts Tilda Swinton among its former pupils.
The school was astounded to discover that one of its distinctive jackets had once belonged to Elvis.
The item is being sold by PR Auction online - with no mention of its Scottish roots - and is expected to fetch at least $2,000 (£1,430).

The Fettes College blazer was among a massive collection of the Elvis's possessions which were obtained from his father's home in Tennessee in 1999. The jacket was identified by its Aitken and Niven retailer label with the address marked '79 George Street Edinburgh'. Aitken and Niven supplied the Edinburgh school with its uniform until about 20 years ago, and the same blazers are still worn by the senior boys at the school, now priced at £120.
The Edinburgh school blazer was on display inside the Elvis-a-rama museum from 1999 until 2006.
A spokeswoman for Fettes College said: 'We were utterly delighted when we found out that Elvis Presley owned and wore the distinctive Fettes blazer. An Old Fettesian living in the United States originally alerted us to the discovery and our archivist has been busy trying to find the link between Elvis and Fettes College.
David Ferguson, managing director of Aitken and Niven, who long ago moved from George Street to stores in the city's Morningside and Blackhall areas, confirmed it was a Fettes college blazer.
He said: 'We sold these until about 20 years ago. The school have their own shop now. I don't know how it would come into Elvis's hands. He must have liked the colours.'
A spokesman for PR Auction said: 'The collection in which the jacket was found, is well known to Elvis collectors. In light of the new information about it originating from Scotland, how it made its way to Elvis can only be speculation and an educated guess.
'If I had to guess I would say that it must have been a gift from a fan who recognized that Elvis wore such flashy clothing in the 50s.'
Elvis set foot in Scotland once, during a 60-minute layover at Prestwick airport in 1960, during which he was mobbed by fans.

The soundtrack album is produced by longtime Presley archivist Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Zimny and rock writer-manager Jon Landau.
Warren Zanes writes in the book, "In this collection, one gets not a greatest hits package but a song-by-song, curated portrait of an artist, an artist who very consistently and courageously gave himself to his performances, as if in the giving he might find some missing part of himself."
Among the numerous Presley disciples Zimny and Zanes interviewed for the documentary are Springsteen and Tom Petty, who recently shared his thoughts about the King of Rock 'n' Roll.

Elvis in Blade Runner 2049: One of the best films of last year was 'Blade Runner 2049' by director Denis Villeneuve. It was the sequel to the 1982 'Blade Runner' and stared Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford.
Set thirty years after the first film, Ryan Gosling plays K, a blade runner.
And, Yes, in 2049 ELVIS is still relevant! His great musical legacy continues and his holographic image is still playing in Las Vegas. In a delightful touch ELVIS is still playing in Las Vegas but now as a hologram.
EPE's Joel Weinshanker at the time noted, "A genuine Elvis Hologram is a big ‘if’. My position is that you can never create what Elvis had, which is something you can’t put a finger on or describe."
In a time when holographic entertainment seems like it’s readily available and consumed, it makes sense that legends would be brought back from the dead for a constant hurrah.
It’d be odd if Elvis Presley is the only famous figure that the future still holds onto, but for the King of Rock and Roll, it wouldn’t be that surprising. |

Elvis Week 'Garden Party' at Denmark's Memphis Mansion: Henrik Knudsen is planning a special Elvis Extravaganza for Elvis Week 2018.
For three days August 17-19 European Elvis fans can enjoy the delights of Elvis' friends, acquaintances and musicians without the trouble of flying to Memphis.
This will take place at the "Danish version of Graceland" the Randers Memphis Mansion.
Special guests include Linda and Sam Thompson, Dick Grob, James Burton, Glen D Hardin, Ronnie Tutt, Alanna Nash and The Imperials.
Henrik Knudsen started the Official Elvis Presley Fan Club of Denmark back in 1990 and by 1993 had opened the first Elvis exhibition in Randers.

'Elvis Presley - The Beginning' NOT A New DVD: EIN thanks Elvis Express Radio who spotted that the supposedly new documentary - which we ran as a news story last week - is in fact a re-release from 15 years ago!
In no way is it "NEW" or "the only documentary about Elvis 1954-55 tour".
The DVD was originally released by "Delta home entertainment" in 2003 (pic right). Check on Amazon where you can buy the original version for around $2.
The program starts with an Elvis appearance on a KWKH radio broadcast from October 16, 1954, taken from a Louisana Hayride performance by the then 19 year old. You travel the same route they traveled, seeing the small clubs, honky tonks, churches, high schools and other venues they performed at and motels they slept in during this year long odyssey. There are radio promos and even clips of Elvis, who talks about the stress of touring, doing multiple shows each day, the pressure of day to day life on the road.

Five Actors Who Played Elvis Extremely Well: Recently posted on TvOvermind website an entertaining article on actors who have portrayed Elvis in movies.
... There are a lot of actors that have played Elvis Presley, but there are only a few that have really played him well. The list for this is as long as a person's arm and then some. If you decided to count every Elvis impersonator that had ever put on the dark wig, the flashy outfits, and those customary dark sunglasses then the list would never stop. Elvis Presley was and still in many ways is an icon in American culture and if you happen to say that he was just so-so to a diehard fan the best bet is to have a ready argument for your claim or just walk away.
The actors that have played the legendary ELVIS are many, but only a few have ever managed to capture the essence of the man in their acts. |

5. Tyler Hilton - Walk the Line
Hilton's part in this movie was understandably small because it was the story of Johnny Cash and the others were just window dressing.
But there is a pivotal scene that's been argued far and wide since it's deemed very incorrect. It comes when Cash first starts popping pills, because Elvis takes them so it should be okay. The pills they took were commonly used so that they could get from gig to gig without having to take any extra time, but eventually they did become a problem.

4. Michael St. Gerard - Elvis (TV Show)
This is not Gerard's only stint playing Elvis but it is the longest since he didn't have much of a role in Great Balls of Fire on account of the fact that the movie was about Jerry Lee Lewis. Gerard though has the look that simply defines the way that a lot of people wanted to look when impersonating Elvis.
He had the baby face and the classic good looks that made him a shoe-in for the part.

3. Bruce Campbell - Bubba Ho-Tep
So admittedly Campbell plays an impersonator in the film but he still pulls off the look so well that I had to add this one in. A lot of Elvis impersonators just don't have the right kind of build, face shape, or even the swagger to pull off the look.
That's not the point since it's about having fun and paying homage to the king, but in a movie it pays to at least get close to the look.

2. Michael Shannon - Elvis & Nixon
Neither man really looks like the person they're playing, but this is actually quite alright since it's more of a parody of the picture that was taken of the real Elvis and Nixon many years ago. Shannon is doing his best to get the look down, but he definitely gets the eccentricities in there, even if they're not one hundred percent correct, they're still amusing.

1. Kurt Russell - Elvis
Kurt Russell really threw himself into this role. He had the voice just about down, the movements, and the swagger that he needed to be the king. The strength of Russell's role as Elvis helped propel him into bigger leading roles in movies with 'Escape from New York' following soon after. The film had a fine director in John Carpenter (riding success after 'Halloween' in 1978) and is a fine biography even if only made-for-tv.
Kurt Russell also portrayed Elvis again later on in 2001 in '3000 Miles to Graceland' opposite Kevin Costner.
Perhaps it helped that Russell made his film debut as the kid who kicks Elvis in the shins in 1963's 'It Happened at the World's Fair'.

It takes a lot to fill Elvis' shoes, but some actors do a pretty good job.
EIN would also note two other performers of Elvis,
- Johnny Harra in the quality 1981 bio-pic 'This Is Elvis' who had the difficult job of playing the older Elvis. Harra was however an Elvis impersonator rather than an actor.
Incredibly EPE / Priscilla let them film upstairs in Graceland in Elvis' bedroom!
Marty Lacker noted, "It was filmed upstairs and they would have to have permission to do so. I put nothing past Priscilla especially if she got paid." (Go here for more Marty Lacker RIP)
- Val Kilmer, who looks nothing like Elvis, but did a marvellous job in True Romance (1993) as the ghost of Elvis watching over Christian Slater's role as comic-book nerd / Elvis fan.
True Romance is a very fine thriller / romp with excellent Screenplay by Quentin Tarantino and excellent director Tony Scott.

HBO's 'Elvis-The Searcher': EIN contributor George Smith has supplied some tremendous thoughts about 'Elvis-The Searcher' the new HBO documentary.
Whereas some fans have been disappointed with the lack of unreleased Elvis material on the soundtrack compilations, George Smith points out the great positives..
- The very idea of this documentary is thrilling. I've been waiting all of my adult life for a serious and respected music film-maker to assemble the definitive Elvis documentary. Whether this turns out to be that documentary remains to be seen, but it looks very promising to me at the moment.
-It will make judicious use of existing tapes to tell the story of Elvis' journey as a creative artist. It will not contain substantial amounts of rare video and music, instead offering commentary from those who knew, loved, worked with and were profoundly influenced by Elvis Presley.
- The marketing imagery is brave and should be applauded. One of the reasons Elvis has relatively little respect among subsequent generations of music listeners is the often shoddy and cliched use of photographs and typography on his LP covers and advertising. Here there is not one single hint of the iconic Elvis used in the picture. Instead they have chosen a mug shot of an ordinary man. Clearly he is a handsome man, But he is just a man. Not a demi-God or a superstar, just a man.
- 'Elvis-The Searcher' may not necessarily be aimed directly at the keen Elvis collector. Instead, it will serve several purposes: it will draw in serious music fans who, until now, have not shown any interest in Presley's music or career but who respect the opinions of people like Springsteen, Petty, Landau, etc;

- It may possibly draw in the casual music fan who just likes to see a well-made documentary;
- It will hopefully draw very positive reviews from the press and the music press, and may even encourage an editorial or two about Elvis' much overlooked artistry and contribution to civil rights;
- It will at last give fans like me something to point the unenlightened towards when they confess to not liking or understanding Presley or his music.
- The accompanying CD will act as a simple tool to encourage those who "bite" to investigate further. It may not sell millions of copies and is not intended to but the graphics look gorgeous to my eyes, as does the track listing.
- This is potentially the single most exciting event in the Elvis world for the past decade, rivalling even the Tupelo box set.

'Murfreesboro '74' FTD will be One of the Best!: Elvis' March 1974 tour was one of the strongest of the year and FTD have already released four concerts from that tour, including the famous Memphis show.
But if you are considering that you don't need yet another 2 concerts from that tour, then "Reconsider-Baby" as FTD contributor Robert Frieser notes that these are two of Elvis' best performances from 1974.
.. The two Murfreesboro shows from March 14th and especially March 19 can be seen as the highlight of the March tour.
These shows can be seen as a prelude to the famous record recording of March 20 in Memphis, the recording of which Elvis received a grammy award for his rendition of How Great Thou Art, counts as one of the best shows of 1974.
The Tour had highlights such as the Tulsa Shows, Houston Astrodome shows but also the Roanoke and Richmond shows were top notch.
The tour was actually a 15 day tour but because of the speed with which the tickets were sold out, more shows were booked.

Elvis who had not toured since July 1973 had first completed a fully booked season in Las Vegas in January & February of 1974. At those shows in Las Vegas there was quite some criticism in the media, but that criticism faded with the shows he did in March. The shows were highly professional and alternating his voice and show attitude was good.
The show of March 14th is a very cool show, vocally Elvis is in top form. During Love Me Tender Elvis is irritated by the feedback. And Elvis asks Felton to do something about the sound. Polk salad Annie is a top version and on Why Me Lord he does the last part of the song again. At the end of Suspicious Minds he does a one-liner of Take These Chains. For Charlie Hodge it's a special evening, Elvis told the audience that the parents of Charlie Hodge are in the audience and therefore he does a duet with Charlie on Help Me.
The sound of the show is of a good sound quality. So we have something to enjoy, Elvis is in good shape and gives people value for their money but the highlight of this release is the show on March 19th. The show of Richmond a day earlier was already a top show and Elvis was pretty loose and in his element.
The show in Murfreesboro is even better, this is because it's the end of the tour and maybe the looking forward of the Memphis record recording, that Elvis keeps getting better and better. |

In this show Elvis has even more fun and Elvis is even more loose and vocally even better. This show features a powerhouse performance of Steamroller Blues and also during the introductions, Elvis takes the time to thank Ramada Inn for the good care of the group. before Help Me, Elvis tells us that the song was written by Larry Gaitlin. Sadly the tape ends 40 seconds into Mystery Train. This show was the best show of the tour. A professional show with Elvis very much at ease.
These shows have been on the wish list by ftd for a long time.

Elvis Presley’s Omega Wristwatch For Auction: Elvis Presley’s Omega wristwatch goes on the block during the auction house’s Geneva Watch Auction on May 12 and 13 at Hôtel La Réserve.
At a charity event and concert in 1961, RCA Records, Presley’s label at the time, presented him with the 18-karat white gold dress watch set with 44 brilliant-cut diamonds on the bezel to mark his impressive achievement of selling 75 million records. The watch was purchased at Tiffany & Co. and features the retailer’s signature on the dial underneath the Omega designation at 12 o’clock. The case back bears the inscription “To Elvis, 75 Million Records, RCA Victor, 12-25-60,” commemorating the date that the sales milestone was reached.
As the story goes, the uncle of the watch’s consignor randomly met Presley in a Las Vegas bar in the 1960s. |

After expressing mutual admiration for each other’s watches, Presley suggested to trade his Omega for the other gentleman’s diamond-set Hamilton on the spot, which they did. Presley’s watch was later passed on to its current owner, so it has never appeared on the market before.
“We believe Elvis Presley had hundreds of watches throughout his lifetime,” says Paul Boutros, Phillips head of watches for the Americas, who notes that some of his timepieces, including a Rolex King Midas, are displayed at Graceland. “This particular watch is the first one to come to market that has such a clear and convincing provenance that celebrates a really important milestone in his career.”
The estimate is US$54,000 to US108,000, the Elvis lore increases the estimate tenfold compared to what a similar watch would be valued at without it.

EPE vs City of Memphis etc in Court: As reported by the Memphis Business Journal, the “plaintiffs are ‘caught in a trap’ and they ‘can’t walk out’.”
Elvis lyrics quoted in legal documents could only mean one thing: Elvis Presley Enterprises (EPE) is in court to try and get approval for their planned 6,000+ seat venue on its Graceland campus.
The discussion centred on whether the new arena would violate the FedExForum arena use agreement with Memphis Basketball (Memphis Grizzlies), City of Memphis and Shelby County.
To help fund the proposed venue, EPE wants to seek approval to increase its TIF (tax increment financing) from 50 percent to 65 percent and add the venue to its existing Graceland TIF district.
EPE’s Graceland campus was previously awarded the Graceland TIF to support debt service payments for The Guest House at Graceland, its 450-room hotel, and Elvis Presley’s Memphis, an entertainment and exhibit complex.
Memphis Basketball filed its motion, the reply states how the “Plaintiffs will need ‘a little more bite and a little less bark’ if they are to avoid dismissal of their complaint” — to be clear, yes, the Grizzlies' reply brief makes multiple references to Elvis lyrics throughout its dozen pages.

The other defendants — the City of Memphis and Shelby County — also filed motions to dismiss EPE’s declaratory judgment action. All three cite how the plaintiff was not a third-party beneficiary.
The City of Memphis’ reply in support of the motion to dismiss the declaratory judgment action states:
After Chancellor Jim Kyle had a chance to “stop, look and listen” at the various arguments it was the The Memphis Grizzlies who won the battle
Shelby County Chancellor Jim Kyle granted a motion to dismiss the case of EPE vs City of Memphis et al.

Lisa Marie Presley is more than $16 million in debt!: So where’s all the money, honey?! According to court documents filed on Valentine’s Day, Lisa Marie noted that she only has a total liquid assets of less than $20,000 and owes more than $10 million in unpaid taxes for the the years 2012 to 2015. Presley filed the court documents in response to the nasty ongoing divorce proceedings with her estranged husband, Michael Lockwood, who is suing Presley for spousal support and attorney’s fees.
According to the paperwork, Presley’s current business manager Justin Stiegemeyer claims his client “had not been provided with proper accountings or notices or been kept abreast of her finances” by her former business manager and that at the time they were fired, Presley had “total liquid assets of less than $20,000.”
Lisa Marie's ex Michael Lockwood won't face any personal charges following her claims he possessed inappropriate photos of children. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation looked into the matter but could not determine any crime had occurred.
Presley does receive a monthly salary of $4,361 from her late father Elvis Presley’s estate, and has $100,000 in dividends and interest from investments.
Presley and Lockwood, who married in 2006 and had twin daughters in 2008, have been locked in a bitter divorce battle for two years.
Lockwood has requested spousal support and asked Presley to cover his attorney’s fees.

Make Your Valentine's Day, "ELVIS Day"! If you are someone who feels a tightness in your chest and teardrops swell in your eyes when you listen to a sublime Elvis song, then perhaps no one but Elvis can make your Valentine's Day! You are almost certainly a baby boomer and you owe this to Elvis before you go - it is time to rename Valentine's Day as "Elvis Day".
Valentine's Day is the ultimate celebration of love, the most precious of human feelings, personified by Elvis as no one else has. This is borne out by the titles he chose for his songs and their lyrics, with almost all of his best songs featuring love and heartache.
What makes Elvis uniquely deserving is the emotionall avalanche of each of his songs, delivered with powerful voice, intonation, timbre and mountains of emotion to someone in front of him, making you feel that someone was no one but you. Arguably even Luciano Pavarotti's superb delivery of the original "O Sole Mio" has never achieved the emotional turmoil of "It's Now or Never" by Elvis in listener's minds.

romance and angst of separation and loss, which endeared Elvis and his music to a generation, do not find much of chance to survive.
In the broken down social fabric of today, you can even find friends you can bang with just by a click, there is less and less people to listen to and experience the inexplicable emotional trips to fantasy worlds of joy and sorrow only Elvis songs can take you.
It is sad that whole new generations are really missing out on something which generations of parents and grand parents were granted to experience but have no real means of passing on, like lessons in text books or in curriculum.
Numbers like "Can't Help Falling in Love", "Always on My Mind", "Love Me Tender", " I Just Can't Help Believin", "I will hold you in my heart" or "The Thrill Of Your Love" or "Let It Be Me" which are indeed immortal might possibly be missed by the younger generations.

In the 1950s' Elvis was basically too damn sexy for mainstream TV, yet 82% of the US viewing audience couldn’t help but watch! The battle for media censorship struggled while Elvis, seemingly unintentionally, kicked down the door for everyone to follow. American youth would never be the same, & the rest of the world would follow.
Elvis was just a natural great-looking sex-god, oozing LUST and surely that deserves a CD worth of celebration.

Entertaining biography by Elvis' co-star on Spinout, Diane McBain: One of the most well written and entertainment biographies in recent years is Diane McBain's Famous Enough A Hollywood Memoir. Many of you will recognise her as one of Elvis' co-stars in the enjoyable film, Spinout (aka California Holiday).
Written with acclaimed author, Michael Gregg Michaud, Famous Enough is a candid and revealing look at Hollywood.

Ms McBain fondly remembers her time working on Spinout, stating:
The excitement of being on a movie set helped me. The cast and crew were terrific, supprtive, and great fun. Elvis was a huge help, too. He was slim and gorgeous, at the top of his form. I hadn't really been a big fan, so I didn't know what to expect. The rumors that preceded him were true. He behaved like a complete gentleman.
The author is not as kind about a number of other male actors in Hollywood and she also discusses how she and Elvis incessantly talked about their favorite books and how surprised she was to discover Elvis had a spiritual side.
Famous Enough has been rightly lauded as brutally honest, at times harrowing and a highly entertaining read. The good, the bad and the ugly of Hollywood are laid bare within its more than 400 pages. 'Marty Lacker RIP: A Life Well-Lived' & Elvis at American Studio's Interview: It was with immense sadness that one year ago on February 13, 2017 our great friend - and a true friend to Elvis - Marty Lacker passed away. We still miss him dearly.
Marty is well-known as one of the key members of the Memphis Mafia and also co-Best Man at Elvis' wedding. He was known for both his honesty and being forthright with his opinions. He was the only member of the Memphis Mafia who still watched and commented on recent Elvis News. He had no issue with holding people to account (especially ones who would inflate their importance within Elvis' legacy) and would regularly ask EIN to add his comments or to correct any inaccuracy.
Elvis fans often ask about Marty Lacker's background, how he came to meet Elvis, as well as his involvement in the music industry outside of working for The King.

Sexual Harassment and the Elvis Film: Hollywood is currently reeling from the Harvey Weinstein scandal and its aftermath with a growing number of prominent actors and behind-the-scenes protagonists being accused of inappropriate behaviour. As the inappropriate behaviour has been occurring since the early days of film it struck EIN that it probably happened behind the scenes during the filming of a number of Elvis’ movies.
In researching the issue it was Tom Lisanti’s series of film and television related books which were revelatory. Lisanti’s books are a collection of profiles, interviews and tributes about actors and films popular during the 60’s. They offer a wonderful and thoroughly entertaining window into the fun and sometimes less than professional mores of what was a cool, swinging time but sadly a seriously compromised industry.
Several of his books also reveal alleged inappropriate behaviour by celebrated film producer/director, Hal Wallis!

In Fantasy Femmes of the Sixties, Lisanti provides this account of the experience of Julie Parrish, Elvis’ co-star in Paradise, Hawaiian Style (1966):
As a young naive actress in Hollywood, Julie unfortunately ran into a number of directors and producers who didn’t respect women. “I couldn’t understand why an old guy with white hair would be after me. I was revolted by it. From the beginning, my agent taught me to make excuses to get out of these situations. The main thing was to not hurt their feelings because they might fix it so you didn’t work again.”
“I really wanted to work with Elvis. I was in every Elvis fan club around when I was a teenager. I would even do Elvis imitations with the long sideburns and guitar when I was in high school. So I convinced Hal Wallis to give me another shot and did the test over. Then I got the part. Mr. Wallis, who was married, was an old lech. I think he felt there was an unspoken promise that I would sleep with him since he allowed me to re-test for the part. On the day before filming began, he called me into his office, led me over to the sofa, and briefly kissed me on the mouth. He said, ‘Little girl, we’re going to have a long talk about your future.’ I made up any excuse to get out of there. While on location he was constantly calling me and asking me out. It was quite annoying and insulting. He called me one last time in Hawaii and said, ‘Little girl, you’d better think again.’ I knew I would probably never work for him again, but that was fine with me. This whole incident highly offended me. I’m not claiming to have been an innocent, but when I make mistakes, I like them to be due to choices of my own.”
Lisanti recounts Ms Parrish’s experience in his most recent book, Talking Drive-In Movies (2017) and also reveals the experience of another young actress who co-starred with Elvis:
Parrish wasn’t the only starlet who had a problem with Wallis. Laurel Goodwin almost did too previously on Girls! Girls! Girls! “Hal Wallis made me a little nervous,” commented Goodwin in Drive-In Dream Girls. “But by the time that we were in a position where there might have been a problem for me he had a personal crisis. Wallis had to leave the shoot in Hawaii and return to the mainland. I took a sigh of relief and really didn’t have to face that issue but I saw it coming around the corner, so to speak. He was always a gentleman with me but I knew what was lurking.”

Jon Abbott, in his book, The Elvis Films, described the sexual harassment of Julie Parrish and Laurel Goodwin by Hal Wallis as:
Parrish was apparently not so lucky, and suffered the usual cliched pushy threats of the stereotypical middle-aged movie producer.
Hal Wallis was no stranger to accusations of sexual harassment. One of the most interesting, sourced from Bernard F. Dick’s biography, Hal Wallis: Producer to the Stars and recounted in the online journal Famous Casting Couch Victims is:
Even when it was clear to him that actress Corinne Calvet lacked the talent to become the next Greta Garbo or Ingrid Bergman, Paramount Pictures producer Hal Wallis continued to show interest in Calvet. According to her autobiography, Has Corinne Been a Good Girl? (1983), Wallis expected her to have sex with him in exchange for her starring in the studio’s 1949 film Rope of Sand.However, Calvet was unwilling to trade sex for a role in the film. She was a married woman, she told him. Allegedly, he countered by stating that her marriage was merely one of convenience, suggested by him as good for publicity. Wallis dropped her option in 1953.To avenge herself, she had sex with him while she was sick. The next day, Wallis developed a strep throat. Calvet sent him four dozen roses with a get-well-soon card and a note: “Next time, I’ll give you something worse. Best wishes for your recovery.”
It will be interesting to see if the scandal currently engulfing Hollywood leads to new accusations of inappropriate behaviour during the filming of Elvis movies.

Elvis 'The Searcher' Hits & Rarities Soundtrack: Rolling Stone has run a short news piece for the up-coming The Searcher release.
An expansive soundtrack Elvis Presley: The Searcher, will be released April 6th. The soundtrack features a mix of Elvis hits and alternate mixes, while a deluxe edition will feature selections from the documentary's score composed by Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready.
The Searcher soundtrack will be available digitally and on CD and double vinyl LP, while the deluxe edition will packaged as a three-CD set. All versions are available to pre-order.
Along with the original soundtrack and parts of Pearl Jam's Mike McCread's score, the deluxe edition of The Searcher soundtrack will include a plethora of bonus material including additional rarities, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' rendition of "Wooden Heart" and classic R&B, country and gospel songs that inspired Elvis.
The set will also come with a 40-page hardcover book packed with rare photographs and a note from director Thom Zimny.
Thom Zimny, "From day one I had a soundtrack in mind; one that would cover Elvis in a new way and go deep into the vault. Thanks to the help of Sony Legacy and the efforts of Ernst Jorgensen, I was able to pore over thousands of recordings and Elvis Presley outtakes. I also wanted the film's soundtrack to pay tribute to the many artists who influenced Elvis, and to incorporate their music to create a sonic landscape that I hoped would give the viewer the experiences Elvis had absorbing the many genres he was exposed to and influenced by – from gospel, to R&B, to country."
He added that McCready's score "brought additional sonic textures and emotional overtones that helped to capture this artist's journey."
The Searcher will premiere on HBO April 14th.
The film was made with the cooperation of EPE and Zimny was reportedly allowed unprecedented access to the Graceland archives.

3 New FTD Releases: FTD today have announced three new releases for the end of this month. A double digipack 1974 previously unreleaed soundboard, the previously announced book/cd 'Rebel With A Cause' plus the double-vinyl “Elvis – The Fool Album”.
- 'Elvis: Murfreesboro ‘74'.
Released as a 5” digipack, this 2-CD set features Elvis in great form at these two shows on March 14th & 19th 1974 at the Murfreesboro Middle State Tennessee University.
The sound quality and performances from Elvis and the band are really powerful.
“Steamroller Blues” will knock your socks off!.
These two soundboards have never been released before not even on bootleg

- 'Rebel With A Cause' Book/CD Combo. Written and produced by David English & Pal Granlund it features newly-discovered images scanned for the first time from the original negatives - exclusive to this book.
The book follows Elvis between August 16 and September 30, 1956 from his arrival in Hollywood to his return to Memphis. Produced by David English and Pål Granlund, it includes many rare unpublished photos taken from the original negatives.

FEB 1, 2018 - Happy 50th Birthday Lisa Marie!: It's hard to believe but today is Lisa Marie's 50th birthday. Lisa Marie was born February 1st 1968, nine months to the day after Elvis and Priscilla's wedding in Las Vegas on May 1, 1967.
The world has long been fascinated with the children of celebrities. While she has had her ups and downs life must have been a truly emotional roller-coaster being the daughter of Elvis. Unlike many celebrity children Lisa Marie has been famous her entire life, pretty much every second.
Cameras were in Priscilla’s Baptist Memorial Hospital room in Memphis, Tenn., after Lisa Marie was born in 1968. And they even followed her parents, with Priscilla in a wheelchair, as they headed home for the first time.
Lisa Marie has gone on to become a star in her own right, her 2003 debut album, To Whom It May Concern, went platinum and the world has watched her every step of the way.
Lisa Marie has been married four times. She first married Chicago-born musician Danny Keough in 1988, having two children, Riley Keough (actress born 1989) and son Benjamin Keough, born in 1992.

More famously she also married Michael Jackson and actor Nicolas Cage, before marrying music producer Michael Lockwood, father of her twin girls.
Her relationship with Michael Lockwood has ended with nasty on-going court cases

"Elvis was my first love" says Linda Thompson: Fox News recently reported on Linda Thompson remembering Elvis some forty years on.
Linda Thompson told them "I was always a fan, but I didn't think he would transcend time and space and become the iconic, almost religion he is now,"
Thompson was crowned Miss Tennessee back in 1972. She first met Presley at a movie theater. The former pageant queen described how Presley, whose marriage to Priscilla Presley had ended, was abusing prescription pills. The pair dated from 1972 until 1976.
Talking about Elvis' health issues she noted, "I don't have such an ego that I think I could have made a difference. But I know I did |

take very good care of him and probably extended his life by a few years. I felt a keen responsibility to take good care of him.
Elvis was my first love, the one who altered my life the most. He was the first, and that's always very special. Time and circumstances will express themselves no matter what you do."
While Thompson went on to marry Bruce Jenner, now Caitlyn Jenner. She also later wed music producer David Foster, but they split in 2005. Still, she still keeps Presley in her heart.
"Elvis was very old-fashioned, I think that was one thing that he very much appreciated and valued in me, that I was a virtuous girl at the time. I wasn't that young, but I was a Southern Baptist. I grew up very conservatively and traditionally. I wanted to save myself for marriage, and he just thought that was very commendable. He didn't want to put the pressure on me to commit before I was ready. He was a Southern gentleman, a lovely human being."
Thompson also revealed she learned "romantic love" from Presley while living with him in Las Vegas and Graceland, as well as when they hit the road together for his performances.
"I learned just about everything about love, both good and bad. One of the biggest lessons I learned from living with Elvis and loving him for so many years was that we're all human, and no matter what level one has reached in terms of fame, they're still human beings.
It's a disservice, really, when we put celebrated people on a pedestal and don't allow them to be human. It's a very lonely experience for the individual. It's not a sustainable way to live. I think that happens to a lot of people who find themselves thrust into the spotlight. Life becomes a little distorted for them."

Thompson had no regrets about their romance.
"I absolutely adored him. And I still feel a connection to his soul because he was such a good human being and a charismatic figure. I got to know him very intimately as a human being, not just Elvis Presley the icon.
I still feel that and there's a raw spot in my heart when I see him or hear him sing. I have to stop what I'm doing and just remember the great love that we shared. That doesn't go away. That stays in the heart forever."

'Elvis: The Bicentennial Show' 1976' FTD In-Depth Review: 1976 is not an easy Elvis live-in-concert year to review. There were no major set-list changes, no dramatic "emotional roller-coaster" of 1974 and no high-flying "Huntsville" 1975 excitements. Apart from the exceptional blast of the final December 1976 Tour the year was the inevitable downward spiral.
However there were some highlights along the way and Elvis collectors have always been keen to hear Elvis' July 4th 1976 Bicentennial performance, as well as RCA's Joan Deary's initial choice for the 1980 box-set of Duluth, October 16, 1976.

'Irving Berlin and White Christmas' the discussion continues: Last week EIN reader "T Anderson" wrote in wanting to know more about Shane Brown's 'Irving Berlin and White Christmas' spotlight.
He raised a few more queries about this infamous story including..
- The signed picture that Elvis sent to Berlin worded to lessen hostility. This gives credence to the story about Berlin's anger over Elvis's recording.
- Elvis' Christmas Album was definitely controversial in 1957, and I'm sure Berlin didn't like the performance by Elvis.
- The lack of reporting of this story elsewhere means nothing. This was at a time when powerful people could stop stories from being published. Berlin certainly had a lot of power.
- The "firing" of DJ Al Priddy may have actually been a "suspension".

FTD will NOT end in 2019: A fair number of uninformed supposed Elvis "insiders" (even some Fan Club Presidents) have been publishing fictional stories that the FTD label is planning to close in 2019.
Ernst Jorgensen had strongly denied this story stating, that FTD has plans to continue for the foreseeable future.
In an interesting interview about 'The Future of FTD' - with Trevor Cajiao in the recent ETM&HM magazine - Ernst Jorgensen's main points were....
1. FTD will not be closing in 2019
2. The 'Classic Albums" series is nearly complete but there are more to come, noting 'Aloha' and 'Madison Square Garden' are still to be done.
3. Expanded "complete session tapes" releases are being considered
4. Plenty more soundboards to come

UPDATED - Trying To Get To You: The Truth Behind The Elvis And Roy Orbison Show Rumours: For decades there has always been an unsubstantiated rumour that Elvis Presley appeared as a guest on Roy Orbison's TV show on the local station KOSA.
The Roy Orbison website notes that both Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley performed on Roy’s TV show in late 1955.
Respected author Colin Escott wrote in his book Good Rockin’ Tonight about a kinescope of Elvis on the Roy Orbison TV show actually existing.
Some keen Elvis fans have said that they have seen this very kinescope at Elvis Week shows back in the 80s.
But like infamous Pied Piper of Cleveland does this footage really exist and is there any real proof that Elvis did appear on the Roy Orbison TV show?
Shane Brown (author of Reconsider Baby: Elvis: A Listener's Guide) has done an immense amount of investigation and thinks he has found the answer.

"The Wonder Of You" 2018 Australia Tour changes: The "Back By Popular Demand" 2018 'Wonder Of You' Australian tour has been majorly altered by the local producers RCM Touring. They are no longer in April 2018 as planned and the locally-anticipated show in the new venue of Newcastle, NSW has been cancelled completely.
Now there are only the two shows in Sydney and Melbourne and the dates have been moved to August 2018, presumably to help link up with the excitement of Elvis Week.
Elvis will beam down from 'state of the art' video screens to give fans the closest possible experience to seeing The King "ELVIS" perform live.

Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware) - Exposing the Amazon Elvis Book Rip-Off?: From RCA to Sony Elvis' back catalog has long been exploited at the expense of his legacy. The same thing is now happening regarding Elvis book releases!
Through clever marketing, including the use of different (but suspicious) author names and different book titles for releases which are essentially identical; short and long book editions; and coupling the Elvis story with that of other celebrities, a glut of Elvis related book titles (with repetitive text) only available from Amazon are blatantly misleading fans.

'Elvis: Lake Tahoe '74' FTD In-Depth Review: 'ELVIS: Lake Tahoe ‘74' features another value-for-money double pack with two Dinner Shows from May 25 and May 26 1974. This a 2-CD 5” digipack release.
The setlist at Lake Tahoe this season was fine, and while the May 25, 1974 Dinner Show has been out as an audience recording, the May 26, 1974 Dinner Show is totally unreleased.
Although both concerts are "Dinner Shows" on May 26, with The Jackson 5 in the audience, Elvis was inspired and included several rarities - and pushed the band on with unexpected reprises.
Both concerts create a good combination - making this a great two-for-one release from FTD.

Book Review "Reconsider Baby: Elvis: A Listener's Guide": Elvis Presley made over 700 recordings during his life. This book by author Shane Brown examines all of them. Session by session, song by song, Reconsider Baby takes the reader on a journey from Elvis’s first recordings in 1953 through to his last performances in 1977.
This significantly expanded and revised edition of 2014’s Elvis Presley: A Listener’s Guide provides a commentary on Elvis’s vast and varied body of work, while also examining in detail how Elvis and his recordings and performances were discussed in newspapers, magazines, and trade publications from the 1950s through to the 1970s.
The text draws on over 500 contemporary articles and reviews, telling for the first time the story of how Elvis and his career played out in the printed media, and often forcing us to question our understanding of how Elvis’s work was received at the time of release.

Millie Kirkham - Bob Hayden Interview for EIN: Millie Kirkham was one of Elvis' favourite back-up singers. Upon hearing her vocal on Ferlin Husky’s million selling 1957 hit record 'Gone' Elvis asked her to join in with The Jordanaires at his 1957 recording session. Millie Kirkham would work on Elvis' studio sessions through to 1967 and join him on-stage in Las Vegas for live performances including 1970's 'That's The Way It Is' filming.
As well as working with Elvis, Millie Kirkham worked closely with the Jordanaires on some of the most famous Nashville sessions including records by George Jones, Patsy Cline, Bobby Vinton, Jim Reeves, Charley Pride and Loretta Lynn.
Millie Kirkham was a little reluctant at first to do an interview as she had been mis-quoted in the past and had that fear of it happening again. She agreed to the Q & A after she was advised she would not be coming to Australia for the first "Elvis in Concert" tour.
Millie answered every question and seemed to be most happy and full of life for her age at that time.

Keith Alverson first saw Elvis in concert in the early 70s when he secretly smuggled in his small pocket camera to sneak a few photos of Elvis from there he went from strength to strength. One his first Elvis' concerts where he was able to get quality photos of Elvis in concert was Elvis in Atlanta, July 1973 after which he saw Elvis over 80 times live on stage.
Alverson's outstanding photos of Elvis in his "Phoenix" jumpsuits are known by every Elvis fan. With 1,500 photos this book concentrating on Elvis from 1973-1975 has the possibilty to be a real stunner.

‘ELVIS: Studio Sessions 1956' In-Depth Review: MRS newest release, a massive 3CD/172 page book compilation "Elvis Studio Sessions ‘56 The Complete Recordings". 'Roustabout' FTD Soundtrack Review: Roustabout was Elvis' 16th movie, it had been five months since Elvis’ last album session and his publishers had a chance to secure soundtrack material from a variety of composers. Eleven songs were needed and while the carnival theme stopped most of them having any inspired lyrics, at least the composers Leiber / Stoller and Otis Blackwell were included in the selection.
Reaching #1 on Billboard in early 1965, it would Elvis’ last chart topping album until "Aloha From Elvis Via Satellite" in 1973.
53 years after its original release FTD is pleased to announce the long awaited "Classic Album" version of "Roustabout". Packaged in 7" format with a full colour 16-page memorabilia booklet, it contains some previously unreleased material.
So why has it taken FTD so long to release? It was once noted that only the masters had been located in the vaults, so there was not much to include for a “Classic Album”...

Mindi Miller Interview with EIN: Mindi Miller was a working actress when she met Elvis in early 1975. She was interested in karate (she performed all her own movie stunts), exploring spirituality and the Bible and so they had a lot in common.
Mindi Miller and Elvis bonded over their common interests and soon afterwards he asked her to go on tour with him in April 1975.
She stayed friends with Elvis through the years - along with members of the 'Memphis Mafia' - and attended his funeral.

'Platinum: A Life In Music' Re-Release OUT NOW: Sony UK has re-released the classic 4-Cd set 'Platinum: A Life In Music'- in a small-book format twenty years after its first release in 1997.
The set chronicles the outstanding career of Elvis Presley (1954 to 1977) from a unique perspective and it includes 100 performances, 77 of which were previously unreleased in 1997. This historic overview traces his development as an artist and emphasizes how Elvis' music always returned to its unshakable core values. This 4-CD box set contains a 48-page book and consists mostly of previously unreleased alternate takes of Elvis Presley's hits.
There is no info on whether this 20th anniversary release includes audio upgrades of all the "77 were previously unreleased takes" which have since been remastered.

'Marty Lacker: A Life Well-Lived' & Elvis at American Studio's Interview: It was with immense sadness that last month EIN had to report on the death of our great friend - and a true friend to Elvis - Marty Lacker. We will miss him dearly.
Marty is well-known as one of the key members of the Memphis Mafia and also co-Best Man at Elvis' wedding. He was known for both his honesty and being forthright with his opinions. He was the only member of the Memphis Mafia who still watched and commented on recent Elvis News. He had no issue with holding people to account (especially ones who would inflate their importance within Elvis' legacy) and would regularly ask EIN to add his comments or to correct any inaccuracy.
Elvis fans often ask about Marty Lacker's background, how he came to meet Elvis, as well as his involvement in the music industry outside of working for The King.

UPDATED - 'Way Down In The Jungle Room' EIN Review: Released for August 2016 this SONY Legacy pack celebrates the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ last recording sessions which took place in Graceland’s Jungle Room.
The publicity noted the sessions “have been newly mixed by Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording” and “includes both outtakes and in-the-studio dialog, providing a ‘fly-on-the-wall experience’ of what the sessions were like".
Elvis' original 76/77 albums were fairly uninspired collections (bar a few fine singles) and on the original LPs it was almost impossible to glimpse any sign of creative input from Elvis through the syrupy overdubs. It wasn't until the release of FTD’s magnificent ‘The Jungle Room Sessions’ that many fans began to understand the raw emotion, close camaraderie and Elvis’ personal feelings that were revealed by these intimate Graceland sessions.
To produce that same kind of revelation for the 'General Public' would be a very tricky project but that is exactly what the new legacy team has done - and to great effect.

UPDATED - Paul Dowling EIN Interview Part Three: Paul Dowling is without doubt one of the major names in the Elvis World. He started collecting and selling Elvis vinyl over 40 years ago and has one of the world's largest Elvis Presley record collections. Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage!
The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
