'Elvis: The Movies' Book Review: Respected Elvis author Alan Hanson, along with Erik Lorentzen, has just published 'Elvis - The Movies', 432 pages examining all of Elvis' movies and including some sensational photos.
Elvis Presley's dream was to become a movie star, and the dream started well for him. His acting ability developed steadily throughout his first four movies. But, alas, it was the music which first gave him access to Hollywood, that proved the undoing of his acting career. The inevitable result was a long series of films with weak plots in which only the music mattered.
Author Alan Hanson chronicles Elvis' cinematic career, combined with hundreds of stunning photos from Erik Lorentzen's exclusive collection. But how could this improve on all the previous 'Elvis movie' books.

'Elvis The Robot' Now Working In Vegas: Elvis just started a new, somewhat boring job but of course it is in Las Vegas. When a guest at the Renaissance Hotel in Las Vegas needs a toothbrush or an extra towel, Elvis brings it to their room. Of course it is called ELVIS! but do EPE know?
Three-feet tall and covered in decorative stars, this Elvis is a robot. And while it doesn’t replace any human employees at the moment, it is a sign of what’s next for Las Vegas.
Earlier this month, Las Vegas hosted one of the largest technology shows in the world. Self-driving cars, cleaning robots, and AI-powered systems offered a peek into the city’s own automated future.
But Las Vegas is also the U.S. city most at risk for losing jobs to automation in 20 years about 65% of the city’s jobs could be automated.
Most Las Vegas workers hold low-paid service positions such as cashier, office clerk and cleaning staff. They work in restaurants, hotels and offices. Their daily routines often involve repetitive tasks, which are ripe for automation.
And when "Elvis Presley The Hologram Show" hits town it's possible that Elvis The Robot will be serving the drinks!
The biggest determining factor will be education. People with a doctoral degree only have a 13% chance of being replaced by robots while people with only a high school degree have a 74% chance, according to the study.
The robot revolution might be closer than many in Las Vegas realize. According to Moenius, the real impact will hit the city in five to 10 years.
Automation is already taking jobs, but not enough to have any real impact on employment numbers. McDonald’s and other food chains have kiosks for ordering. Silicon Valley company Knightscope makes robots that replace security guards (with mixed results).
Savioke, the maker of Elvis, has its Relay robots in hotels across the country. Amazon just opened its first cashier-less grocery store.

Even if locals do end up struggling to find work, the city will likely carry on as a tourist attraction for outsiders who have jobs and can afford vacations.
“Vegas will still be Vegas and what characterizes Vegas will still be the same. You will see fewer people face-to-face in the service sector, but Cirque du Soleil will still be there.”

"Elvis was my first love" says Linda Thompson: Fox News recently reported on Linda Thompson remembering Elvis some forty years on.
Linda Thompson told them "I was always a fan, but I didn't think he would transcend time and space and become the iconic, almost religion he is now,"
Thompson was crowned Miss Tennessee back in 1972. She first met Presley at a movie theater. The former pageant queen described how Presley, whose marriage to Priscilla Presley had ended, was abusing prescription pills. The pair dated from 1972 until 1976.
Talking about Elvis' health issues she noted, "I don't have such an ego that I think I could have made a difference. But I know I did |

take very good care of him and probably extended his life by a few years. I felt a keen responsibility to take good care of him.
Elvis was my first love, the one who altered my life the most. He was the first, and that's always very special. Time and circumstances will express themselves no matter what you do."
While Thompson went on to marry Bruce Jenner, now Caitlyn Jenner. She also later wed music producer David Foster, but they split in 2005. Still, she still keeps Presley in her heart.
"Elvis was very old-fashioned, I think that was one thing that he very much appreciated and valued in me, that I was a virtuous girl at the time. I wasn't that young, but I was a Southern Baptist. I grew up very conservatively and traditionally. I wanted to save myself for marriage, and he just thought that was very commendable. He didn't want to put the pressure on me to commit before I was ready. He was a Southern gentleman, a lovely human being."
Thompson also revealed she learned "romantic love" from Presley while living with him in Las Vegas and Graceland, as well as when they hit the road together for his performances.
"I learned just about everything about love, both good and bad. One of the biggest lessons I learned from living with Elvis and loving him for so many years was that we're all human, and no matter what level one has reached in terms of fame, they're still human beings.
It's a disservice, really, when we put celebrated people on a pedestal and don't allow them to be human. It's a very lonely experience for the individual. It's not a sustainable way to live. I think that happens to a lot of people who find themselves thrust into the spotlight. Life becomes a little distorted for them."

Thompson had no regrets about their romance.
"I absolutely adored him. And I still feel a connection to his soul because he was such a good human being and a charismatic figure. I got to know him very intimately as a human being, not just Elvis Presley the icon.
I still feel that and there's a raw spot in my heart when I see him or hear him sing. I have to stop what I'm doing and just remember the great love that we shared. That doesn't go away. That stays in the heart forever."

Scottish brewers wins battle with EPE over "Elvis Juice": Back in 2017 Scottish brewers BrewDog were banned them from calling one of their bestsellers "Elvis Juice" with EPE demanding the Scottish brewers change the name of the drink. However after a three-year battle the firm has overturned a ruling banning them from using the name and the order to pay Presley's estate £1,500 in costs has been scrapped.
BrewDog founders James Watt and Martin Dickie even changed their names by deed poll to Elvis in a bid to prove the name was not exclusive.
They insisted their beer had no connection to the singer and suggested there ought to be 'a little less conversation and more time enjoying our beer'.
The Elvis estate said the application overlapped with their registered trade mark 'Elvis' and people could mistakenly believe that the beer was endorsed by them.
The UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO), which rules on trade mark disputes, found in favour of the estate last June but Brewdog appealed the decision.

Although Elvis died in 1977, his name and likeness have been trademarked by EPE, which earns millions of dollars every year through a licensing programme that grants the right to manufacture and sell Elvis Presley merchandise worldwide.
BrewDog said it was famous in its own right and had 'no need to ride on the coat tails of others.'
Watt and Dickie, who were at school together started BrewDog in 2007 with a bank loan and a grant from the Prince's Trust because they couldn't find anything they wanted to drink.
The company, which is based in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, has been valued at up to £1billion and the pair were awarded MBEs in 2016.
BrewDog currently has 47 bars and bottle shops and exports to 55 countries.

'This is Elvis' UK Review: The musical 'This is Elvis: From Burbank To Vegas' is playing at UK's Theatre Royal Windsor until next Saturday.
The local paper posted a cool review including..

Elvis's plaintive question might be uncomfortable for fans to hear but Bill Kenwright's latest production shows the vulnerable side of The King of Rock'n'Roll.
Much more than a tribute show, This Is Elvis is set in the Sixties and the times they are a-changin' for the singer.
Poised to perform in his first live TV show on an NBC special, he's racked with self-doubt. Chatting with his band backstage, he's insecure and edgy - avoiding calls from wife Priscilla, ducking away from his manager 'Colonel' Tom Parker, and feeling out of touch with modern music audiences who go wild only 'if you've got a Liverpool accent'.
Stephen Michaels looks the part of Presley and certainly sounds like him to, armed with a soft Southern accent in the acting vignettes and a powerful pair of lungs for the song.
Backed by 10 talented musicians and three great backing singers, soon the 14 musicians are raising the roof in at NBC in what would come to be known as The '68 Comeback Special'.
Elvis classics like Heartbreak Hotel and Love Me Tender had the Windsor audience swaying in their seats.

his pain over his mother's death. Michaels brought out the sadness and confusion of the man who lived as both a pauper and The King.
I never knew that the singer stood up for civil rights, insisting that his trio The Sweet Inspirations, who were black, should play with him in Vegas.
"Music doesn't care if you're black or white, north or south, rich or poor."
The act ends with a searing Bridge Over Troubled Water, a funky version of Get Back and stunning gospel in Oh Happy Day.
The second act sees Elvis at the International Hotel and ready to Viva Las Vegas if it kills him. The hits come thick and fast: In The Ghetto, Blue Suede Shoes, Always on My Mind, King Creole. the audience was jumping like catfish on a pole.
Everyone was on their feet by the end, all thoughts of Elvis's blue moments blown away.
I didn't know whether this would be another jukebox musical but I came away intrigued and inspired by Elvis Aron Presley. Long Live the King.

Scottish Elvis Party At Prestwick: Over 200 Elvis fans were All Shook Up when they converged on Prestwick International Airport to pay homage to the King.
The Elvis Touch - the Glasgow branch of the Official Elvis Presley Fan Club - held their annual birthday tribute to the late king of rock 'n roll on January 13.
Every year the event is hosted at the airport which is a mecca for fans of the legendary singer as it was the only place in the UK he visited after his aircraft stopped to re-fuel on the way home from military service in Germany.
Revellers were treated to an electrifying set of songs performed by Elvis in the band's own style, which included Johnny B Goode, Baby Let's Play House, A Fool Such As I and a Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On.
Irvine man Paul Downie, who organised the event said: "We had more people along than in the last couple of years, Elvis is still the King."
It was March 2, 1960 that Elvis was mobbed by screaming fans as plane stops at Prestwick Airport, Scotland..
Elvis chatted to the fans for a few moments then walked into the terminal buildings. Inside the terminal building the singer told them that he was looking forward to seeing his family again.
He said his plans for the future, "Well, I want to see my friends and relatives before I do anything"
There will be more movies. But Elvis said: "I would like to branch out and do something more serious. But nothing like Shakespeare . . . I know my limitations."

'Elvis: The Bicentennial Show' 1976' FTD In-Depth Review: 1976 is not an easy Elvis live-in-concert year to review. There were no major set-list changes, no dramatic "emotional roller-coaster" of 1974 and no high-flying "Huntsville" 1975 excitements. Apart from the exceptional blast of the final December 1976 Tour the year was the inevitable downward spiral.
However there were some highlights along the way and Elvis collectors have always been keen to hear Elvis' July 4th 1976 Bicentennial performance, as well as RCA's Joan Deary's initial choice for the 1980 box-set of Duluth, October 16, 1976.
As FTD releases two more 1976 soundboards, will Elvis be back on form and are there any surprises in store..

Neil Diamond Retires from Touring: Neil Diamond, who turns 77 on Wednesday, has cancelled his 50th anniversary Australian shows and retired from performing due to a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.
He usually tours with Elvis' drummer Ronnie Tutt in his band.
The shows will not go ahead as Diamond reluctantly bowed out permanently from live performances.
His upcoming Australian and New Zealand shows would have been the third leg of a 50th anniversary tour.
The onset of Parkinson's disease has made it difficult for Diamond to travel and perform, but he plans to continue writing, recording and developing projects.
"My thanks goes out to my loyal and devoted audiences around the world," he said. "You will always have my appreciation for your support and encouragement. This ride has been 'so good, so good, so good' thanks to you."

On Sunday, the Recording Academy will honour Diamond with its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.
Throughout his extraordinary career, he has had 11 singles reach the top of the charts, and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Elvis recorded two Neil Diamond songs 'And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind' and performed 'Sweet Caroline' multiple times in concert.

Elvis "Historic" Paper Cup Sells for $3,300!: Proving that some fans are crazier than others, the "crusty paper cup that might've once touched Elvis Presley's lips" sold on EBay for US$3,300..
The cup's supposedly from The King's first concert in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1956. Elvis was only 21 at the time and played his first show there in April of that year. The cup was supposedly taken from him at his hotel by a woman named June who then kept it in a box with his autographed picture for decades.
North Carolina resident Wade Jones is a collector of all things Elvis. He tells the Tulsa World that the crumpled blue-and-white Dixie cup was snagged by a fan in April 1956, after Elvis performed at the Tulsa Fairgrounds Pavilion.
The auction closed on Sunday hitting the $3,300 mark after 85 bids.

Oscilloscope has US rights to new Elvis film “The King": Director Eugene Jarecki’s Elvis-themed road-movie “The King” was part of the first deal at the Sundance Film Festival when Oscilloscope acquired the North American rights to the film ahead of its festival screening on Jan. 25. Oscilloscope announced the deal a day before the opening of the festival.
Executive producer Steven Soderbergh will join Jarecki in Park City, Utah, to discuss the film at the showing.
Oscilloscope will release “The King” later this year. An early version of the film premiered as an official selection at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival with the title “Promised Land.”
Jarecki’s film is a road tour of America in a 1963 Rolls Royce that was originally owned by Elvis Presley with stops in cities that played major roles in Presley’s life including Tupelo, Memphis, New York, and Las Vegas. The footage includes interviews with Alec Baldwin, Rosanne Cash, Chuck D, Emmylou Harris, Ethan Hawke, Van Jones, Mike Myers, Dan Rather, John Hiatt, Lana Del Rey, and Ashton Kutcher. |

“With his singular cinematic brilliance, Jarecki weaves an urgent portrait of a nation in crisis with a metaphoric connection between Elvis and America,” David Courier, senior programmer at the festival, said. “For just as a country boy lost his authenticity and became a king, so too his country lost her democracy and became an empire. One died in the bathroom; the other now faces an uncertain future under the closest thing she’s ever come to a monarch.”
Jarecki previously won the Sundance Grand Jury prizes for his 2005 documentary “Why We Fight” and for his 2012 drug-war film “The House I Live In.”

'This Is Elvis: Burbank And Vegas' new UK musical: In a publicity piece for his new musical 'This Is Elvis: Burbank And Vegas' that is about to tour England, author Phillip Norman has written a long article for UK tabloid The Daily Mail. In the more interesting comments he notes.... that the real reason Elvis never toured Britain was because his manager was an illegal immigrant terrified America wouldn’t let him back in.
One sultry night in 1968, a small audience nervously filed into a studio at NBC-TV in Burbank, California. The air of tension was more suited to a presidential address at a time of national crisis than a peak-time entertainment show. The customary jokes from the warm-up man raised barely a titter. For these privileged spectators knew they were about to experience the greatest thrill of their lives — or the greatest disappointment.
The show’s star, meanwhile, behind his screens of bodyguards and gofers, was suffering agonies of stage fright. As the minutes ticked away to transmission time, he had to fight a repeated urge to jump into his limo and flee to the safety of his mansion, Graceland, in Memphis, Tennessee.
His name was Elvis Presley. And he was about to make his first live appearance for seven years.
The connected worlds of showbusiness and sport have witnessed many heroic comebacks, when stars have refused to acknowledge the natural end to their careers and reinvented themselves for a whole new generation, sometimes even for all posterity. There was Judy Garland with the film A Star Is Born in the Fifties, Muhammad Ali as world heavyweight boxing champion in 1974 and Frank Sinatra as Ol’ Blue Eyes in the Eighties.

But none was more memorable than the moment, 50 years ago this year, when Presley returned from seeming oblivion in cheesy Hollywood movie musicals to take back his crown as The King of Rock’n’Roll.
Nowadays, it’s hard to believe that such a self-reinvention could ever have been necessary. For since his sudden death from heart failure in 1977, aged only 42, Presley’s cult of posthumous adoration has grown to surpass even John Lennon’s.
Nowhere is his memory more cherished than in Britain, and not only by ageing rockers whose humdrum Fifties youth he set on fire with songs such as Hound Dog, Blue Suede Shoes and Heartbreak Hotel.
‘Elvis may have left the building,’ a recent headline proclaimed, ‘but his legacy goes marching on.’
Yet there was a moment in the late Sixties when even The King’s most loyal subjects acknowledged he had been dethroned by young British pretenders such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
How he stormed back in a blaze of lip-twitching glory is the theme of a new musical, This Is Elvis: Burbank And Vegas, for which I’ve written the book and which starts a UK tour this week. |

'This Is Elvis' recounts how a supreme talent rebelled against being undervalued, exploited and cheapened, only to have his renaissance derailed by his dreadful manager, ‘Colonel’ Tom Parker, so that he ended up spending the rest of his too-short life a virtual prisoner amid the tawdry glitter of Las Vegas.
Writing the drama between the songs has reminded me afresh how everything that young men have considered cool for the past six decades originated with Presley. And it made me grieve afresh for a genius who could have gone so much further.
In the late Fifties, Elvis Aaron Presley from Tupelo, Mississippi, had been raw sex on rubber-soled shoes; a hip-swivelling horror to parents whose daughters he incited to shriek like banshees and hurl themselves at him like moths at a seductive flame.
Tragically, this most instinctively brilliant of performers was managed by a former fairground huckster named Tom Parker, who’d received the honorary rank of colonel from a Southern militia and traded shamelessly on it ever after.
Obese and cloth-eared, ‘The Colonel’ never remotely comprehended Presley’s gifts, viewing him rather as a catchpenny carnival attraction like the Incredible Tattooed Man or Bearded Lady.
In common with most people over 30, Parker believed rock to be merely a fad that would disappear in a few months.
He therefore set about watering down a force of nature into a mainstream showbiz personality.
By the 70s, Parker wanted his boy to keep earning the Vegas fortunes, from which he took 50 per cent commission.
A compulsive gambler, Parker also made side deals with the hotels, including a bottomless casino tab he never had to settle.
The spine-tingling finale of his act was American Trilogy, a combination of Dixie, the Battle Hymn Of The Republic and the old black spiritual All My Trials in which, heartbreakingly, he seemed to prophesy his own fate to his young daughter, Lisa Marie: ‘So hush little baby, don’t you cry/You know your daddy’s bound to die...’
Elvis’ story is the Great American Tragedy — Jay Gatsby in rhinestones. But a musical cannot just convey a superstar’s decline.
Which is why one whole act of This Is Elvis is a recreation of his first-ever Vegas show, in 1969, when so many possibilities seemed to still lie ahead.

Elvis "Historic" 62-Year-Old Paper Cup for Sale: A crusty paper cup that might've once touched Elvis Presley's lips is up for sale on Ebay and there are people willing to pay over $1,600 for it.
The cup's supposedly from The King's first concert in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1956. Elvis was only 21 at the time and played his first show there in April of that year. The cup was supposedly taken from him at his hotel by a woman named June who then kept it in a box with his autographed picture for decades.

EPE suing Pool Companies for Guest House death: According to The Blast on-line news site, EPE is suing two pool companies that worked on the pool at the Guest House at Graceland, claiming they should be held liable for the bacteria that lead to one visitor dying after a stay there.
A woman named Linda Godsey died on June 21, 2017 after she allegedly contracted Legionnaires' Disease following a stay at the Guest House at Graceland.
Godsey's widow and her family sued EPE three months after she passed away.
The lawsuit claimed nine people, including Godsey, contracted the disease from the hot tub and swimming pool at the hotel.
In new court documents obtained by The Blast, EPE has now filed suit against Memphis Pool Supply, who

serviced and maintained the pool, and Santa Barbara Control Systems, who manufactures the equipment that was installed to monitor the bacteria levels in the pool and hot tub.
EPE claims the two parties are at fault, claiming either the equipment failed in some way, or it was not properly monitored or maintained. They want Memphis Pool Supply and Santa Barbara Control Systems to be held liable for any damages won by Godsey's family.
Memphis Pool Supply and Santa Barbara Control Systems each responded to EPE's suit, saying they should not be held liable for the water quality. They also accuse EPE and the hotel of failing to properly maintain the sprinkler system on the hotel grounds and for failing to make sure the water aerosolized from the sprinkler systems did not enter the pool or hot tub.

'Irving Berlin and White Christmas' the discussion continues: Last week EIN reader "T Anderson" wrote in wanting to know more about Shane Brown's 'Irving Berlin and White Christmas' spotlight.
He raised a few more queries about this infamous story including..
- The signed picture that Elvis sent to Berlin worded to lessen hostility. This gives credence to the story about Berlin's anger over Elvis's recording.
- Elvis' Christmas Album was definitely controversial in 1957, and I'm sure Berlin didn't like the performance by Elvis.
- The lack of reporting of this story elsewhere means nothing. This was at a time when powerful people could stop stories from being published. Berlin certainly had a lot of power.
- The "firing" of DJ Al Priddy may have actually been a "suspension".

2018 Australian Elvis Festival biggest yet: Parkes Elvis Festival director Cathy Treasure said that while they haven't had a chance to crunch any official numbers more people attended this year's festival than the 25,000 who attended in 2017.
She estimated that $15 million would be generated into the local economy this year.
Elvis fans from around Australia and around the world congregated in Parkes for five action-packed days of live music, special events, talks and more, kicking off on Wednesday and running until Sunday.
From Ballarat to Burke, the UK, Japan, Canada and Singapore, fans travelled to rock around the clock and celebrate the King himself.
While bejeweled jumpsuits, Priscilla Presley outfits and poodle skirts are usually the way to go for a Parkes Elvis Festival - there were some very brave fans who rocked leather in the 40 degree heat on Friday for the '68 Comeback themed festival this year.

A heavy contingency of celebrity fans also joined in the festivities including model and author Tara Moss, former Olympic swimmer Lisa Curry and rock legend Phil Emmanuel and acclaimed music journalist Glenn A. Baker.
"Parkes Elvis Festival has grown over the years into a truly king-sized celebration and a globally recognised bucket-list event," Ms Treasure said.
A big difference she noticed this year was how much the crowd was spread out across town and how festival goers remained in the park longer on the last day of the event.
"We had a new competition in the park on the Sunday - the unplugged session which involved no backing and no costumes. There was some amazing talent in that unplugged session, I was nearly brought to tears," Ms Treasure said.
The Elvis Street Parade on Saturday saw over 10,000 people line the streets to enjoy over 170 Elvis-themed floats, vintage cars, motorcycles, walking groups and marching bands.
In 2019 Parkes Elvis Festival will celebrate its 27th year with the theme "All Shook Up"

Elvis Slept Here - Waco Holiday Rental: Elvis not only ate in Waco during his years at Fort Hood, but he slept here, too, and the house where he did is now open for others to do the same.
The children of Eddie Fadal, a Waco DJ and businessman who befriended Presley when the rock 'n' roll star was in Central Texas, have repurposed their family's three-bedroom red-brick home at 2807 Lasker Ave. into a vacation rental with a '50s and '60s flavour and decorated with Elvis memorabilia.
It's called, naturally, The Elvis House.
"It's what it could have looked like back then . . . We've tried to make it sort of a time capsule," explained Eddie's daughter Janice, a 63-year-old Waco property manager.
Her brother Dana owns the house and, after several decades as a rental property, was considering this summer putting it up for sale. After some thought, Janice suggested remaking it into an Elvis-flavoured vacation rental.

Though her father amassed a considerable collection of Elvis memorabilia over the years, the family sold much of it after his death in 1994, Janice recalled. When she and Dana made the decision to revamp their childhood home into an Elvis-era rental, she had some shopping to do.
"It was a lot of fun (to decorate). I really got into it," she grinned.
The Fadals - Eddie, wife LaNelle, daughter Janice and son Dana - lived in the Lasker Avenue house from the 1950s into the 1970s. Presley first visited in 1956 when he performed at the Heart O' Texas Coliseum, then more often when he was stationed at Fort Hood in 1958-59 for basic training during his military service. Waco and the Fadal home offered a convenient getaway whenever the Army private could land a weekend pass.

Eddie did his best to shield Presley from overzealous fans during his Waco visits by not announcing when the singer was in town - the Fadals had an unlisted phone number for several years - but Presley's visits were frequent enough that the young Janice knew what the arrival of a black Cadillac meant. So did her mom, who often whipped up a home-cooked meal for the homesick soldier.
Elvis spent many of his Waco hours chatting with Eddie Fadal, listening to records in Fadal's pink-and-black music room, playing and singing at the family piano, eating and taking the occasional nap in the Fadals' master bedroom, sometimes with Memphis girlfriend and actress Anita Wood.
There are a few photos of actor Nick Adams, who sometimes hung out with Presley and who starred with James Dean, one of Presley's acting idols, in "Rebel Without A Cause."
The house's music room, an add-on to the original 1924 house and where Eddie Fadal and Presley listened to records, no longer is painted pink and black, as Presley knew it, but reflects the two men's fondness for gadgets.

For Janice, the sentiment goes beyond the King of Rock 'n' Roll.
"(Dad) loved this house. It's kind of a tribute to him," she said. "I know he's happy about it, wherever he is."

Australia's Parkes new Elvis Statue: The importance of Elvis to the Australian country town of Parkes has been has been immortalised in bronze at Cooke Park and was officially unveiled on Saturday.
NSW Governor David Hurley pulled the covers off the life-size statue in front of sculptor Terrance Plowright and a large crowd.
Mr Plowright said it was a daunting task trying to sculpt a man who is still one of the most recognised figures in the world, 40 years after his death, but he was honoured to be given the chance.
His work captured Elvis in one of his signature poses, leaning forward with his right leg bent in front and left leg stretched out behind him, singing into a microphone.
It rests on a single plinth, to symbolise January, with eight sides, to recognise Elvis' date of birth January 8. There are also plaques with eight Elvis quotes in the ground around the sculpture.
The artist said one of the key stipulations when he came up with the design was that Elvis was that specific pose, and Elvis had to be smiling.
Parkes mayor Ken Keith said the statue was to "recognise the importance of the Elvis Festival to Parkes, as well as the wonderful volunteers"

Anthony Petrucci wins Parkes ETA Contest: Anthony Petrucci will head to Memphis in August to compete in the world semi-finals of the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist contest after winning the Australian final at Parkes on Saturday.
The Melbourne performer was chosen by the judges from eight quality entries in the final at the Parkes Leagues Club to win the prestigious trip, as well as $3000 in prize money.
Brody Finlay, from Townsville, was second, with another Melbourne performer, Joe Piastrino, finished third.
Petrucci had been a keen fan of The King since childhood and made his national television debut on 2005's Channel 9's Star Struck which saw him go on to perform at the "Legends in Concert" show at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas. Now Anthony is headed back to the States to represent Parkes in Memphis for the 2018 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest.
"Winning the Parkes Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest is a surreal feeling. It's a great thing to be recognized for doing what I am passionate about and honoring my idol." Petrucci said.

Peter Haan, Former President of 'It's Elvis Time' Fan Club Died: The Dutch Elvis Presley Fanclub, It's Elvis Time, announced the sad news last week that their former chairman Peter Haan died after an unexpected and short illness at 72 years of age. Peter Haan has been involved in the fan club since the 1970s and held the post of chairman from 1981 to 2010.
Peter enjoyed much respect both in the national and international Elvis world. He made it possible for many Elvis fans to travel to America, both before and after the death of Elvis, and from the 80s brought many friends and musicians from Elvis for performances to Europe.
He also worked with the record company of Elvis on a number of releases around Elvis. His years of dedication to keep Elvis and his music alive is special and very big. Partly for this, Peter received a special tribute in Memphis, Tennessee on 10 August 2007. Today, the club still has more than two and a half thousand active members and thus belongs to one of the largest fan clubs in Europe. For several years, Peter's wife, Freia Haan-Roos, has taken over the chair. With the help of a number of employees and volunteers, the many Elvis fans in the Netherlands can continue to count on It's Elvis Time at all times.

The HBO documentary ELVIS PRESLEY: THE SEARCHER debuts Saturday, APRIL 14 (8:00–11:00 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO.
This three-hour, two-film presentation focuses on Elvis Presley the musical artist, taking the audience on a comprehensive creative journey from his childhood through the final 1976 Jungle Room recording sessions. The films include stunning atmospheric shots taken inside Graceland, Elvis’ iconic home, and feature more than 20 new, primary source interviews with session players, producers, engineers, directors and other artists who knew him or who were profoundly influenced by him. The documentary also features never-before-seen photos and footage from private collections worldwide, and includes an original musical score composed by Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready.

Graceland guests from around the world gathered on the front lawn of Elvis Presley’s iconic home this morning to celebrate Elvis’ birthday, joining city officials and Graceland executives as Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell, Jr. read the official proclamation for “Elvis Presley Day” in Memphis and Shelby County. The specially-prepared birthday cake was a tribute to Elvis’ 1968 Comeback Special, as Graceland kicks off its year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary year of this milestone TV event.

EPE also marked the occasion by officially opening its newest exhibit at Elvis Presley’s Memphis. The “Hollywood Backlot” exhibit features production sets and artifacts from the acclaimed television series “Sun Records” produced by ThinkFactory Media. Filmed in Memphis and aired on CMT network in 2017 (until the second series was cancelled), the eight-episode series chronicled the meteoric rise to fame of pioneering musicians Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. Guided by Sun Records founder and producer Sam Phillips, these young musicians combined the styles of “hillbilly country” with the 1950s R&B sound created by artists like B.B. King, Fats Domino and Ike Turner, and changed the course of music forever.
Included in this one-of-a-kind exhibit are iconic set pieces that will transport guests back to the historic Memphis Recording Service studio and WHBQ Radio – during the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.

Australian Parkes Elvis Festival This Weekend: Fans from far and wide can't help falling in love with the annual Parkes ELVIS festival in country Australia from Thursday Jan 11 to Sunday Jan 14, 2018,
Sydney's Central railway station turns into a sweaty sea of black sideburn wigs and tight jumpsuits as hundreds of music lovers make their way to the annual Parkes Elvis Festival.
This year's festival theme is Elvis's 1968 Comeback Special, with spectators and performers travelling from all over the world to celebrate the life of the music legend.
Elvis enthusiast Uki Maeda and her three friends travelled from Osaka in Japan to attend.
They each wore matching karate suits emblazoned with the letters EP on their backs, celebrating Elvis's practice of martial arts which he often performed on stage.
Demand for the six-hour trip on the Elvis Express was so high this year that a second train, the Blue Suede Express, was brought in to transport the hordes of fans to Parkes.
The Mayor of Parkes, Councillor Ken Keith, said the festival's popularity not only benefitted his town of 11,000 people but also helped other nearby regional communities.

"It's getting people from the city and even internationally to venture west and experience that country hospitality."
Cr Keith said Governor David Hurley would be unveiling a statue of Elvis as part of the town's ceremonies.
The town transforms into a vibrant tribute to The King, who would have been 83 this year, with a street parade and non-stop entertainment to keep visitors jiving.
“It’s just everybody’s in a good mood, everybody’s happy, nobody’s cranky. Up and down Parkes' streets, it’s Elvis singers. Everybody’s just in party mode, it’s a great little atmosphere.”
Parkes, a mining town with a population of more than 11,000, is famous for its radio telescope which played a pivotal role in bringing Neil Armstrong’s 1969 moon landing to the world.
But the Elvis Festival, first held in 1993 to coincide with the singer’s birthday has since placed the town on the tourist map and also earned it the moniker of “Elvis Capital of Australia”.
Festival organisers estimated this year's event would attract around 25,000 people, bringing $13 million to the local economy.

Priscilla's step-father Paul Beaulieu has died: Priscilla Presley's stepfather, Paul Beaulieu, has died. He passed away in the Brentwood, CA home that Elvis Presley gave to him, on Thursday, Jan. 4 from kidney failure. He had been in declining health for several years. Paul Beaulieu is bottom left in this photo of Elvis & Priscilla's wedding.
Funeral services are expected to take place sometime next week in Santa Monica, CA and many members of Priscilla's family, including daughter Lisa Marie Presley and granddaughter Riley Keough, will attend. A source close noted that Priscilla is trying to keep the news of her father's passing quiet at this time to avoid paparazzi interest in the matter.
Nearly one week before Paul's death, his actress granddaughter Riley took to Instagram to share a sweet snapshot of herself FaceTiming her grandfather.
Priscilla first met Elvis, in 1959 when she was just 14 years old and living with her family in Wiesbaden, Germany, where Paul was working as an Air Force officer. Elvis was also stationed there as an Army sergeant.

Priscilla has admitted that her stepfather Paul was not too keen on her dating Elvis at first. "I’ll never forget it. My father said, 'Absolutely not!' My mother said, 'I won’t let you walk across the street to see Elvis Presley!' I knew this was going to be a battle." When Elvis wanted to see Priscilla again, she recalled that her father "interrogated" her. "He wanted to know, 'What happened the first night? Why does he want to see you again?'" Priscilla then revealed that Elvis came to her house "in full uniform" to speak to her parents. "He came absolutely decked out in white gloves, hat, everything! Already Elvis had won my father over! They talked for an hour and a half."

'Priscilla Talks about new HBO doco: Priscilla recently talked with Billboard magazine to promote the new 2018 Elvis HBO documentary 'The Searcher'.
'Elvis Presley: The Searcher' presents an unprecedentedly deep look at his life and music, from his first forays into Memphis blues clubs to his early stardom, up through his late ’60s comeback and exhausting ’70s touring. The nearly three-and-a-half-hour-long, two-part documentary) features new interviews with scholars, stars like Bruce Springsteen and the late Tom Petty, and Priscilla Presley.

Elvis and Priscilla at Christmas: So many of us have spent Christmas with Elvis' music, but Priscilla Presley actually spent Christmas with Elvis.
At NPR –World café Priscilla recently shared heartwarming memories of holidays with the King, from the first time they ever exchanged gifts to their tree-trimming traditions as a married couple living at Graceland, to how that changed when Priscilla gave birth to their daughter, Lisa Marie, and how Priscilla feels when she hears Elvis' music now.
While the interview is basically a promo piece for the 'Christmas with Elvis and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra' album she did have a few interesting comments to share
... Christmas was Elvis' favourite time of year, he was like a kid at this time of year. He liked buying gifts. He had liked to pick out his own gifts to give to his friends. He would call his jeweller to bring over a selection and he would go shopping as well. Elvis just love giving. We would have Santa come and see Lisa when she was just two years old. It was Elvis' father dressed up and he loved doing it.

The one thing I loved was decorating the Christmas tree. I'd do something with the girls who were married and who worked with Elvis. I wanted it to look perfect. I would let Elvis and a couple of the guys add the tinfoil to look like little icicles hanging-down, but Elvis would roll it up and throw it like a snowball at the tree. Then everyone would join in. I remember getting so mad because it messed up the look of the tree.
... Elvis didn't want to play his own to his music around the house, he was a little embarrassed, a little shy about playing his own records. If he was playing anyone's records it would be other artists like Roy Orbison - ''Pretty Papers" he loved that - Brenda Lee, and Glenn Campbell, different artists he would listen to. We had the radio on a lot, he listened to all the new material on the radio."

Well, we were standing in the buffet line at Piccadilly about last Fall and Haywood came in immediately behind us. Asked what I was doing these days and I told him: publishing Elvis World magazine, and Haywood began rattling off his encounter with Elvis and it's one of those "only Elvis" stories. We made a mental note to contact Haywood "soon" and get the full details for a future issue of EW. ALSO, three months before Elvis died, I had pretty reliable reports Elvis was dating a girl named Debbie and was told she was working as a bank teller on EP Blvd.

For months I'd go into this and that bank and to this and that teller and ask for change for a dollar, looking at the nameplates of each teller, trying to find this "Debbie." Never did. Then came the trial of Dr. Nick (that ended up with his losing his license) ... and I was looking at the list of witnesses and saw a "Debbie Watts" listed for the next day's hearings.
Not putting two and two together instantly, I called George Klein to ask who this Debbie Watts was and he said "You ought to know her. You played baseball with her father at South Side." Haywood Watts?! Debbie Watts?!! Father/daughter? |

So, IN that Piccadilly line, I told Haywood I'd like to come to his house and do the interview and, if possible, have Debbie sit in with us; telling him what had been reported to me in 1977 and he assured me that was true. Well, only DAYS after that dinner, Haywood Watts was rushed to the hospital where it was discovered he had contracted a serious case of Diabetes 2 ... and that "maybe" they would have to amputate one or both feet. Haywood went into instant deep depression and, regretfully, I never followed up on his problem. He wound up losing only one big toe, but last week, still in depression, I was told, he was in his front yard and keeled over dead with a heart attack. I attended Haywood's funeral ... as I do as many Scrapper funerals as possible ... and I let Debbie know I'd still like to talk with her whenever she feels like it. That may be soon, later, or never ... but at least we're going to TRY! Haywood, like me, signed a professional baseball contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. Whereas he played 2 years of minor league ball before getting hurt, I never reported -- opting at the last minute to devote all of my time to flying (and coaching kids' baseball on the side)."

More info from the book: Edward George Klein, Sr. was married to Ida Watts Klein. Ida had two sisters and two brothers, one of whom was named Haywood Watts. Mr. Haywood Oren Watts would marry Evelyn Lee and one of their children: Deborah Gail Watts. The late Bill Burk referred to her (in an EIN news article, May 2005) as “Debbie” — which biographer Alanna Nash does, as well — whilst the Memphis Press-Scimitar went with “Debra” in 1973. Motorhead’s Lemmy “bigger than Elvis”: December 28 marked two years since the passing of Motorhead’s legendary frontman, Lemmy Kilmister, who yielded a truly unique and undying impact on the world of rock and metal. Since his death, Lemmy has received an outpouring of love an appreciation from fans and peers alike, acknowledging his pioneering ways.
In a recent interview with Goldmine, Mikkey Dee, the band’s former drummer discussed Kilmister’s influence and legacy within rock music, stating:
“I already know that he’s being remembered in a proper way, because, you know, when he passed, it’s been bigger than Elvis [Presley]”.
He also suggested that Lemmy would be ‘surprised’ at the magnitude of his legacy.
“He would be very surprised and honored if he knew. He might know, if he was peeking down to see what’s going on. I mean, if you saw what just happened at the Wacken festival, for instance, with a hundred thousand fans raising their hands while they played the new video, for [a cover of David Bowie’s] ‘Heroes’. |

That was the release of that song, kind of, and it was just incredible. They’re naming streets after Lemmy; they’re naming all kinds of parks and stages.”
Dee also detailed the level of Lemmy’s lyrical genius, suggesting it was the reason so many wanted to work with him during his time:
“He’s being remembered in a million different ways. He was a poet, you know; he was so good with words. That’s why Ozzy always called him to work with him, and a lot of other entertainers as well, because he could put words together like no one could, really. He scribbled a lyric down in 15 minutes that people might be struggling for months to put together. He just took a napkin and wrote the best lyrics that you could imagine.”

Elvis’ granddaughter interested in playing DC Comics super-villain “Poison Ivy’: Riley Keough has informally thrown her name onto the list of hopeful actresses that want to play Poison Ivy on the big screen, with the character's next appearance scheduled for Gotham City Sirens. How much would her grandfather love that!
We haven't seen Pamela Isley in a movie since the disastrous Batman and Robin, from Joel Schumacher in 1997, when Uma Thurman took on the character. It's been over 20 years and fans should be able to wipe their collective memory of the campy portrayal. However, Fox's Gotham hasn't had the best track record with Poison Ivy on the small screen, either. That version of the character has gone through four changes since the show began, never finding the correct way to integrate Poison Ivy. |

A fan on Twitter asked Elvis' granddaughter who she'd rather play in a movie, with a choice between Poison Ivy and Batgirl. The actress chose Poison Ivy and claimed that the character was her favorite, which isn't exactly begging for the part, but it's a start. The chances of seeing Poison Ivy on the big screen again are looking pretty slim at this point in time after the Justice League movie came out and tanked, weakening the DCEU and leading to substantial changes behind-the-scenes at Warner Bros. The Gotham City Sirens project is rumored to be in development as is the Batgirl movie, but the status of both projects is currently up in the air. Pamela Isley is a major component to Gotham City Sirens, joining up with Catwoman and Harley Quinn, but it looks like Harley Quinn will next be seen in Suicide Squad 2 and then possibly in a Joker and Harley Quinn spin-off movie, but like most of the projects in development, it's hard to tell which ones will end up being made. Margot Robbie's portrayal of Harley Quinn is all of the rage at the moment, so Gotham City Sirens may be on the backburner.
If Poison Ivy were to show up in the DCEU in the near future, Riley Keough would be a pretty good choice. Her work with director Steven Soderbergh in Magic Mike, Lucky Logan, and Starz series The Girlfriend Experience all prove that she has some serious acting ability and can fit into whatever role that is thrown at her. Fans have been waiting to see Keough back in the action genre since her work in 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road, so hopefully a chance at the Poison Ivy role ends up happening. 'Secrets and Lies: Getting to the Truth about Elvis' Christmas Album': Probably more than any other album of his career, Elvis’ Christmas Album is generally regarded as having created the most controversy. At this time of year, this great article from 2016 by author Shane Brown is worth another visit.
Some would argue that the first album in 1956 did this, but actually there was relatively little backlash against it or Elvis in the press prior to the second Milton Berle appearance. Elvis’ Christmas Album, however, has stories of it being banned by radio stations, firings of DJs, and an irate Irving Berlin all attached to it.
These events make for great stories, have been often repeated, and only add to the legend of the boy from Tupelo taking on the establishment and coming out with #1 album.

Elvis fanatic's stolen collection to be replaced by record shop owners: In a cute Christmas Eve story the BBC reports that...
A record shop owner says he and other sellers will try to help out an Elvis fanatic whose valuable record collection was stolen in a burglary.
The victim, who is in his 70s, was left "completely distraught" by the theft from his home in Great Dunmow, Essex.
He had spent much of his life amassing the collection of more than 100 records, which included rare LPs.
Denholm Ellis, of Intense Records in Chelmsford, said he and others had "decided to club together" to help.
"This guy's lost all his records, but we've got a lot lying around in the shop, the sellers have quite a few in their boxes. We've spoken to each other and decided to club together and put together as many Elvis records as we can for him"
Speaking after the burglary happened, the victim - who wants to remain anonymous - said the collection meant "an awful lot".
"It is not just the monetary value of these records; they have huge sentimental value and I just want them back," he said.
Police believe the man's home was targeted because of his Elvis collection.

Rick Chambers introduced Lisa Marie Presley noting that she had created the first endeavor of The Presley Charitable Foundation called Presley Place - New Orleans; a transitional housing facility for homeless families. It provides homeless families up to one year of rent-free housing, child day care, career and financial counseling, family management guidance and other tools to help them break the cycle of poverty and regain self-esteem and independence. She also donated all proceeds from her Duet with her dad’s “In The Ghetto” to the victims of Hurricane Katrina."

'Elvis' Gold Cadillac Tour': EPE have posted a blog about how Elvis' gold Cadillac hit the road to promote Elvis in 1965 and 1968.
With Elvis locked into Hollywood's fluffy family movies and no longer touring, Col Parker sent out his car on tour instead - even to Australia.
The Cadillac was purchased from Southern Motors, Inc., of Memphis, for $11,064.25 on December 22, 1959 and delivered on December 29, 1959. Elvis put down a deposit of $2,000 for George Barris to customize it in November 1961, and he paid an additional $3,000 for more work in March 1962.
George Barris, "King of the Kustomizers," made Elvis' car truly unique. The car held both a TV and telephone, and just about everything was gold.
So in the spring on 1965 Parker & RCA sent the Cadillac on tour with Gabe Tucker, driver and tour manager for RCA, to help oversee the project.

The car also visited Calloway Georgia, Birmingham Alabama, Tuscaloosa Alabama, Montgomery Alabama, Augusta Georgia and Canton Georgia.
In 1968 the Gold Cadillac went back on tour this time on the other side of the world.
In mid-1967, Australian Elvis fan clubs got word that the car would go on tour in Australia and New Zealand in '68. RCA, Elvis Presley Enterprises and the Benevolent Society of New South Wales worked together on the tour and hoped to raise $100,000 for 17 Australian charities.
As a bonus, Elvis included $1,000 worth of toys inside the car for needy children in Australia. He also signed photos that were given away.
Elvis' Cadillac left for Australia on December 8, 1967 and arrived in early January 1968. The car's gold bumper was removed before it was publicly displayed, since the bumper could be easily removed. A regular, non-gold bumper was used instead.
A press conference took place at the Sydney Trocadero on January 17, and then the Cadillac hit the road. |

Also included in the tour were Elvis' Australian RCA Gold Records that were put on display near the car. Fans could also purchase souvenirs, including a souvenir photo of the Cadillac with the car's full details listed on the back; Elvis Australian RCA records; souvenir brochure and more. Elvis fan club members donated their time and efforts by assisting with the merchandise sales.
After a short tour of New Zealand, the Gold Cadillac returned to the States. The Benevolent Society Charity Committee sent Elvis a letter of appreciation and noted that the tour raised $149,175 for Australian charities.
Elvis' Gold Cadillac went on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1977, and you can still see it there today.

FTD will NOT end in 2019: A fair number of uninformed supposed Elvis "insiders" (even some Fan Club Presidents) have been publishing fictional stories that the FTD label is planning to close in 2019.
Ernst Jorgensen had strongly denied this story stating, that FTD has plans to continue for the foreseeable future.
In an interesting interview about 'The Future of FTD' - with Trevor Cajiao in the recent ETM&HM magazine - Ernst Jorgensen's main points were....
1. FTD will not be closing in 2019
2. The 'Classic Albums" series is nearly complete but there are more to come, noting 'Aloha' and 'Madison Square Garden' are still to be done.
3. Expanded "complete session tapes" releases are being considered
4. Plenty more soundboards to come

Suzanna Leigh Has Died: Suzanna Leigh, Elvis' co-star in 'Paradise, Hawaiian Style' has died aged 72. She has been struggling with liver cancer for the past year.
Born Sandra Smith in July 1945 she grew up in Berkshire England, and began working in movies while still a pre-teen. She worked on TV (bit parts with Roger Moore in The Saint) and also staring in a TV series in France.
In the mid-sixties she was spotted by US producer Hal Wallis who brought her to Hollywood to co-star in the film 'Boeing, Boeing' with Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis. She was then cast as Elvis' co-star in the 1966 production 'Paradise, Hawaiian Style' .
She changed her name in honour of Vivien Leigh and always joked, "I was supposed to be a huge, huge star!"
Working on the movie she and Elvis were supposed to meet only on the set to avoid any hint of scandal, but one day, in front of photographers, Presley swept her up and kissed her. The photos went round the world. "That won't do your career any harm, baby," drawled the King. She was with Presley when Steve McQueen called her over to the adjacent set where he was filming and introduced himself. "For anybody of my age that was it: working with Elvis and having Steve McQueen chatting you up. I thought `I'd die happy right now'." |

In her biography she wrote, "Elvis' kisses held an intensity that melted my very being. I slipped my arms around his neck and our bodies entwined. This was all madness, but we didn't stop. A person could go to the gallows with such a kiss lingering on their lips, knowing life had been good."
She and Elvis bonded like brother and sister, linked by their beliefs in guardian angels, their interest in spirituality and their senses of humour.
Leigh soon ran into troubles with the US Screen Actors' Guild and returned to England becoming a star of "Hammer Horror" films.
She is remembered by horror buffs for the "The Lost Continent" (1968) when she grappled with a seaweedy sea-monster - and also Hammer's "Lust for a Vampire" (1974).
In her autobiography Leigh also described her affairs with such stars as Michael Caine and Richard Harris.
Ms. Leigh was living in Winter Garden, Florida, at the time of her death.
Despite some setbacks, Ms. Leigh said in her autobiography that she had no regrets. "My life was a roller-coaster ride through wonder-land".
Her daughter actress Natalia Leigh posted news of the death Monday night, "It was time for JESUS to take her home. The world will forever be a little less light and magical."

Wanda Jackson Talks Elvis: Wanda Jackson "Queen of Rockabilly" new autobiography "Every Night is a Saturday Night" book is out now (see below) and she was interviewed by Fox News about her life and times with Elvis.
Q. How did you and Elvis meet?
Jackson: After I graduated from high school, I had a couple of songs by that time. I was ready to go on tour. I'm an only child, so daddy decided he should go with me. So for the first couple of nights, we toured with a guy named Elvis Presley. I've never heard of him. That was in 1955.
The thing that Elvis did for me was giving me the courage to sing this new music, like he was doing. I would tell him, "I can't do that Elvis because I'm just a country singer! Besides, I'm a girl. I can't sing that stuff." And he said, "I know you could if you try." He made me promise that I would try. I kept my promise. When I moved to Capitol Records, that's when I recorded one of my first rock 'n' roll songs, "I Gotta Know." It was especially written for me. It has a little bit of a country kickoff.
It was a transition song for me. I recorded a lot of rock 'n' roll songs. They mostly had to be cover songs because nobody thought a girl's point of view would sell... I began writing stuff and they all did well... Seems like I always had to be pushed a little bit.
Q. Tell us about your relationship with Elvis Presley.

Jackson: He asked me to be his girl and I had his ring. I wore it around my neck for about a year... But I lived in Oklahoma and he lived in Tennessee. So we didn't see each other except on the tours that we did together. My daddy traveled with me. He wouldn't let me go out with guys usually. But he liked Elvis really well.
He knew Elvis was a gentleman. So he would let me go out with Elvis to a movie or for a burger afterward. Then it wasn't long until he became so popular that we couldn't go out after the show. When they would see that pink Cadillac, they knew Elvis was in there! So it got hard to get together. We were together until the first part of 1957. Then he went to Hollywood to start his film career.
- I still have that ring! My mother made sure she held on to it for me. She figured I wouldn't keep it or something. But she did. She's got a little note in there and it says it was given to me by Elvis in 1955. Come to think of it, I guess it didn't take us long to like each other! We had a lot in common. He took me to his home. We sang and played records. He showed me what he does to a rock song.
So I have to admit, I had a good teacher. Once I recorded rock 'n' roll, I loved it. I knew I could sing it. After I tried it, I thought, "Boy, I found a |

home!" That's why I recorded so much of it. For a good while, we'd put country songs on one side of the single and a rock song on the other, hoping to get air play from one or the other. We were then doing my albums that way... people liked them.
Q. You gave country music sex appeal. How did you manage that?
Jackson: You have to realize, back then, all the girls wore what was called "cowboy suits." Full skirts with maybe some fringe on it, a shirt and maybe a cowboy hat... I just never did feel comfortable with those big ol' heavy boots, the hat and the guitar around me... I was already wearing tight skirts and heels.
I thought, "I need to dress more like a lady. I need more glamour." We came up with tight skirts, silky fringe and high heels. I was a big fan of Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe. So I wanted to dress up like they did. Also, I thought, I was covering up my assets, with the guitar and all that garb on! I was like a bird out of a cage once I got my look down.
Q. How was it touring with Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash?
Jackson: The wild men? Well, my dad didn't let me hang out with the guys during the tours... but I heard about their antics. And there were a lot! But they were great guys. They were my buddies. I liked them. But I did not get involved in their antics. My reputation stayed intact!
Q. You refused to return to the Grand Ole Opry for 50 years. Why?
Jackson: They wouldn't let me go on stage in the dresses like I was |

wearing. So I had to put a jacket on and it broke my heart because I designed a special dress just for them and it was so pretty. But I couldn't go on stage showing my shoulders... Elvis had a worse experience. They didn't like his style of performing. And he said, "I'm never coming back." And he never did. I said the same thing. When I did go back, I wasn't dressing that way anymore. At 80, you can't be so skimpy. You have to do a bit of covering up... It all worked out fine.

UPDATED - Trying To Get To You: The Truth Behind The Elvis And Roy Orbison Show Rumours: For decades there has always been an unsubstantiated rumour that Elvis Presley appeared as a guest on Roy Orbison's TV show on the local station KOSA.
The Roy Orbison website notes that both Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley performed on Roy’s TV show in late 1955.
Respected author Colin Escott wrote in his book Good Rockin’ Tonight about a kinescope of Elvis on the Roy Orbison TV show actually existing.
Some keen Elvis fans have said that they have seen this very kinescope at Elvis Week shows back in the 80s.
But like infamous Pied Piper of Cleveland does this footage really exist and is there any real proof that Elvis did appear on the Roy Orbison TV show?

"Promised Land" threatens at first to be a two-hour documentary about Elvis Presley’s car, but Jarecki shrugs that notion off after a few moments. And not without a degree of self-awareness. “This is a metaphor for Elvis, and the human condition,” someone chuckles from the backseat when the 1963 Rolls Royce breaks down. He even allows a bit of criticism. Writer/producer David Simon smirks, “you should have gotten one of his Cadillacs – an American car,” as mechanics try to revive the lumbering heap of damaged glitz which, by this point in the film, has become a rolling symbol of the doomed American experiment.
Jarecki uses Elvis Presley’s career and influence to help us make sense of fame, power, corruption, self-destructive behaviour and pretty much all the other ills of the world. Why in the hell did poor people vote for that greedy skunk Donald Trump? Many have tried to explain this (and will for a long long time) but few have done so with so many toe-tappin’ clips.
Elvis Presley, as I’m sure you know, grew up dirt poor in the rural south. (“Welcome to the Birthplace,” a Mississippi tour guide, standing on the porch of a small shack, says with a zealot’s tinge in her voice.) He moved to Memphis, admired and absorbed the gospel and R&B of his black neighbours, mixed it with bluegrass and country and changed popular culture and the entertainment economy forever. It was an act of inspired genius (and really good marketing) and also the most blatant example of cultural appropriation in American history. (Yes, Chuck D is in the movie – he hasn’t altered his position, but does have nice things to say about The Beastie Boys. Go figure.)
Does that make Elvis a bad person? Take a step back and ask a bigger question: is America a good country? Hell, go even further: why do human beings believe the obvious lies from powerful forces? Oh, man, I thought this was gonna’ be a road trip down Route 66 in Elvis’ car!

Priscilla notes, “This particular road case was found in our warehouse, these are the scarves that he would hand out to his fans. It was all packed and ready to go for the tour that he was going on before he passed".

Elvis' Madison Marker Damaged: As reported recently in the Journal Sentinel, the marker that shows where Elvis Presley in a karate stance stopped a fight in Madison in 1977 is now damaged.
As 40 years have passed, people sometimes use words like legend or myth about the time Elvis Presley jumped from his limousine at a Madison intersection, assumed a karate stance and halted a fight he spotted at a gas station.
"It really did occur. I was an eyewitness," said Bruce Frey, who was 20 years old on that night of June 24, 1977. Now he's 60 and a retired Madison Police Department detective.
Sadly in 2017 the metal plate bearing a description of what happened that day has been pried from the stone and taken away. But an image of Elvis, guitar in hand and a thank-you-very-much sneer on his lips, remained on the marker, suggesting to passers-by that he did something at that spot.
The marker has been at the spot for just 10 years, the actual gas station was closed and demolished a decade ago.
Elvis was a peacekeeper with perfect timing that night. And 53 days later, he was dead. See EIN's spotlight below.

| Interview - Elvis 02 Exhibition - Angie Marchese, Graceland Director of Archives: Following the success of the 2014/15 Elvis at the O2 exhibition, which attracted a staggering 200,000 visitors, Graceland have decided to return to London’s O2 Arena with the Elvis on Tour The Exhibition. The focus this time has been narrowed down to the period from 1969 – 1977 and over 200 items are included from the Graceland archive, including over 35 outfits, costume sketches and guitars that Elvis used onstage.
Zoey Goto, author of Elvis Style: From Zoot Suits to Jumpsuits visited the exhibition to meet with Graceland’s director of archives, Angie Marchese to discuss how the show was put together and Elvis’ unique style. Angie also discusses who had creative control of Elvis' on-stage fashions, the "must-see" item of the Exhibition and other artists that have been influenced by Elvis' striking fashion sense.

'Elvis: Lake Tahoe '74' FTD In-Depth Review: 'ELVIS: Lake Tahoe ‘74' features another value-for-money double pack with two Dinner Shows from May 25 and May 26 1974. This a 2-CD 5” digipack release.
The setlist at Lake Tahoe this season was fine, and while the May 25, 1974 Dinner Show has been out as an audience recording, the May 26, 1974 Dinner Show is totally unreleased.
Although both concerts are "Dinner Shows" on May 26, with The Jackson 5 in the audience, Elvis was inspired and included several rarities - and pushed the band on with unexpected reprises.
Both concerts create a good combination - making this a great two-for-one release from FTD.

'ELVIS Christmas' with the RPO' - Shane Brown Review: The new Christmas album supposedly brings together the legend’s yuletide performances from both his 1957 and 1971 Christmas Albums, re-imagined with new arrangements performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Shane Brown, author of the new book 'Reconsider Baby' and Elvis music
expert, has written a fascinating and thought-provoking review. He
raises the issue that fans should be genuinely concerned what these
"Re-Imagined" versions are doing to Elvis great musical legacy.
The REAL ISSUE could be that the desperation to earn a quick "Christmas" buck may lead to Elvis' musical legacy being diluted by overdubbed tacky M-O-R versions that have nothing to do with Elvis' original recordings.
He suggests, "All good things must come to an end. Thankfully, all bad things must come to an end, too – and the new Christmas release should prove to be the end of the road of the RPO albums with Elvis."

Elvis' Birthday Celebration Graceland: EPE have announced their schedule for Elvis' Birthday celebrations January 5-8 2018. The schedule of events includes an Elvis Birthday Brunch, Elvis Birthday Proclamation Ceremony, Club Elvis and much more. Our special guests include Rex and Elisabeth Mansfield, who met Elvis during his time in the Army; Evelyn Helms, who was Elvis' junior high school classmate; and two of Elvis' co-stars, Larry Domasin and Victoria Paige Meyerink.
One of the highlights is "Graceland Evening Tour and Reception" - a special event featuring a private evening tour of Graceland decorated for the holidays plus a reception across the street at Elvis Presley’s Memphis. The reception will be a progressive event moving throughout the new complex. The special evening tour of Graceland Mansion will include the iPad tour and Elvis Christmas music playing throughout the mansion grounds. Special guest appearances will include: Larry Domasin, who co-starred in “Fun in Acapulco”; Victoria Paige Meyerink, who co-starred in “Speedway”; Rex Mansfield, who served with Elvis in the Army; and Elisabeth Mansfield, Elvis' secretary while he was stationed in Germany. Book Review "Reconsider Baby: Elvis: A Listener's Guide": Elvis Presley made over 700 recordings during his life. This book by author Shane Brown examines all of them. Session by session, song by song, Reconsider Baby takes the reader on a journey from Elvis’s first recordings in 1953 through to his last performances in 1977.
This significantly expanded and revised edition of 2014’s Elvis Presley: A Listener’s Guide provides a commentary on Elvis’s vast and varied body of work, while also examining in detail how Elvis and his recordings and performances were discussed in newspapers, magazines, and trade publications from the 1950s through to the 1970s.

Millie Kirkham - Bob Hayden Interview for EIN: Millie Kirkham was one of Elvis' favourite back-up singers. Upon hearing her vocal on Ferlin Husky’s million selling 1957 hit record 'Gone' Elvis asked her to join in with The Jordanaires at his 1957 recording session. Millie Kirkham would work on Elvis' studio sessions through to 1967 and join him on-stage in Las Vegas for live performances including 1970's 'That's The Way It Is' filming.
As well as working with Elvis, Millie Kirkham worked closely with the Jordanaires on some of the most famous Nashville sessions including records by George Jones, Patsy Cline, Bobby Vinton, Jim Reeves, Charley Pride and Loretta Lynn.
Millie Kirkham was a little reluctant at first to do an interview as she had been mis-quoted in the past and had that fear of it happening again. She agreed to the Q & A after she was advised she would not be coming to Australia for the first "Elvis in Concert" tour.
Millie answered every question and seemed to be most happy and full of life for her age at that time.

UPDATED - 'Strictly Elvis: 1973-74-75' Book Review: Photographer Keith Alverson's new book with Erik Lorentzen was the perfect new publication for Elvis Week 2017.
Keith Alverson first saw Elvis in concert in the early 70s when he secretly smuggled in his small pocket camera to sneak a few photos of Elvis from there he went from strength to strength. One his first Elvis' concerts where he was able to get quality photos of Elvis in concert was Elvis in Atlanta, July 1973 after which he saw Elvis over 80 times live on stage.
Alverson's outstanding photos of Elvis in his "Phoenix" jumpsuits are known by every Elvis fan. With 1,500 photos this book concentrating on Elvis from 1973-1975 has the possibilty to be a real stunner.
With the book arriving a little late in Australia EIN's Piers Beagley has at last had the chance to discover whether the book really lives up to its publicity -- Hint - It really does!

Parkes Elvis Festival 2018 Program: Primp that pompadour, start swivelling those hips, and get ready to rock 'n' roll, the Australian Parkes Elvis Festival is back! From Wednesday Jan 10 to Sunday Jan 14, 2018, over 25,000 people will shake, rattle and roll into the small NSW country town of Parkes to celebrate the King of Rock 'n' Roll.

‘ELVIS: Studio Sessions 1956' In-Depth Review: MRS newest release, a massive 3CD/172 page book compilation "Elvis Studio Sessions ‘56 The Complete Recordings". The 172-page book, with text by Gordon Minto, focuses on each of Elvis’ studio recording sessions during his first year of national stardom - from the first one in January, held in Nashville, then later in New York, before finishing his final session of the year in Hollywood in September. The full and comprehensive text is complemented by rare and previously unseen photographs and pieces of documentation.
The 3CDs contain the complete archival master and session studio recordings of Elvis Presley from 1956, along with bonus interviews. All 90 tracks have been remastered and restored. 'Roustabout' FTD Soundtrack Review: Roustabout was Elvis' 16th movie, it had been five months since Elvis’ last album session and his publishers had a chance to secure soundtrack material from a variety of composers. Eleven songs were needed and while the carnival theme stopped most of them having any inspired lyrics, at least the composers Leiber / Stoller and Otis Blackwell were included in the selection.
Reaching #1 on Billboard in early 1965, it would Elvis’ last chart topping album until "Aloha From Elvis Via Satellite" in 1973.
53 years after its original release FTD is pleased to announce the long awaited "Classic Album" version of "Roustabout". Packaged in 7" format with a full colour 16-page memorabilia booklet, it contains some previously unreleased material.
So why has it taken FTD so long to release? It was once noted that only the masters had been located in the vaults, so there was not much to include for a “Classic Album”...

Mindi Miller Interview with EIN: Mindi Miller was a working actress when she met Elvis in early 1975. She was interested in karate (she performed all her own movie stunts), exploring spirituality and the Bible and so they had a lot in common.
Mindi Miller and Elvis bonded over their common interests and soon afterwards he asked her to go on tour with him in April 1975.
She stayed friends with Elvis through the years - along with members of the 'Memphis Mafia' - and attended his funeral.

'Platinum: A Life In Music' Re-Release OUT NOW: Sony UK has re-released the classic 4-Cd set 'Platinum: A Life In Music'- in a small-book format twenty years after its first release in 1997.
The set chronicles the outstanding career of Elvis Presley (1954 to 1977) from a unique perspective and it includes 100 performances, 77 of which were previously unreleased in 1997. This historic overview traces his development as an artist and emphasizes how Elvis' music always returned to its unshakable core values. This 4-CD box set contains a 48-page book and consists mostly of previously unreleased alternate takes of Elvis Presley's hits.
There is no info on whether this 20th anniversary release includes audio upgrades of all the "77 were previously unreleased takes" which have since been remastered.
The publicity notes, "You probably think you've heard all there is to hear from The King, what with countless Elvis retrospectives, anthologies, and reissues flooding the market. 'Marty Lacker: A Life Well-Lived' & Elvis at American Studio's Interview: It was with immense sadness that last month EIN had to report on the death of our great friend - and a true friend to Elvis - Marty Lacker. We will miss him dearly.
Marty is well-known as one of the key members of the Memphis Mafia and also co-Best Man at Elvis' wedding. He was known for both his honesty and being forthright with his opinions. He was the only member of the Memphis Mafia who still watched and commented on recent Elvis News. He had no issue with holding people to account (especially ones who would inflate their importance within Elvis' legacy) and would regularly ask EIN to add his comments or to correct any inaccuracy.
Elvis fans often ask about Marty Lacker's background, how he came to meet Elvis, as well as his involvement in the music industry outside of working for The King.

UPDATED - 'Way Down In The Jungle Room' EIN Review: Released for August 2016 this SONY Legacy pack celebrates the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ last recording sessions which took place in Graceland’s Jungle Room.
The publicity noted the sessions “have been newly mixed by Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording” and “includes both outtakes and in-the-studio dialog, providing a ‘fly-on-the-wall experience’ of what the sessions were like".
Elvis' original 76/77 albums were fairly uninspired collections (bar a few fine singles) and on the original LPs it was almost impossible to glimpse any sign of creative input from Elvis through the syrupy overdubs. It wasn't until the release of FTD’s magnificent ‘The Jungle Room Sessions’ that many fans began to understand the raw emotion, close camaraderie and Elvis’ personal feelings that were revealed by these intimate Graceland sessions.
To produce that same kind of revelation for the 'General Public' would be a very tricky project but that is exactly what the new legacy team has done - and to great effect.

UPDATED - Paul Dowling EIN Interview Part Three: Paul Dowling is without doubt one of the major names in the Elvis World. He started collecting and selling Elvis vinyl over 40 years ago and has one of the world's largest Elvis Presley record collections. He started his "WorldWide Elvis" shop back in the seventies, way before the internet, where fans could get hold of rare Elvis records and memorabilia.

Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage!
The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
