Elvis’ 30 top-selling single records: A neat article by Charles Apple for The Spokesman Review.
Elvis Presley, the original “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” long before Michael Jackson was born, graduated from the regional Memphis-based Sun Records to a major recording contract with RCA Records in late 1955. He’d go on to sell 50.5 million 45 rpm records in the US, and that’s not counting his many albums or tickets to the movies in which he starred.
Here’s a look at Elvis’ success as a singles artist.
Elvis’ very first RCA single release, “Heartbreak Hotel,” would ride atop the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for seven weeks and at No. 1 on the Billboard Country and Western chart for 17 weeks. And even with all that success, “Heartbreak Hotel” is “only” Elvis’ seventh best selling single in terms of discs sold.
Elvis’ all-time top-selling single, “It’s Now or Never,” was based on the Italian standard “O Sole Mio.” Elvis had heard Mario Lanza’s recording of that song during his time in the Army in Germany and asked his publisher what he could come up with along the same lines. The result would spend eight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It would also be Elvis’ biggest international hit.
Deserving of special notice is Elvis’ huge 1956 two-sided single hit single. He recorded “Don’t Be Cruel” but then – instead of the usual throwaway song – the label added “Hound Dog” as the single’s B-side. “Hound Dog” took off first, peaking at No. 2 on Billboard’s Best Sellers chart before “Don’t Be Cruel” overtook it, hitting No. 1 on Billboard’s Pop, Country and Rhythm and Blues charts. Between the two sides, the single would spend 11 weeks at No. 1 – yielding only to Elvis’ next single, “Love Me Tender.” |

In all, Elvis would spend 25 weeks at the top of US Billboard’s Best Sellers chart in 1956.

EIN adds, to be honest I am not sure how the classic #1 ‘Suspicious Minds’ is beaten by ‘Good Luck Charm’ or even ‘In the Ghetto’.
The RIAA only note Elvis’ US sales rather that Worldwide, hence ‘A Little Less Conversation’ down at #24 surely Elvis’ biggest selling worldwide #1.

'The James Drury Interview': EIN contributor Jeremy Roberts has been absent of late, but today we discovered his facsinating in-depth interview with Elvis' Love Me Tender co-star James Drury.
Described as "Revelations from Elvis’s rebellious ‘Love Me Tender’ brother tempered by a Benedictine nun"
in an extract from the interview James Dury notes..
"Elvis was a very eager and earnest young man on Love Me Tender. He wanted to learn about motion picture acting. He questioned us constantly about different camera shots and hitting your marks. We gave him all the advice we could. He went on to great success, of course.
Q. Was it difficult to talk with Elvis in light of the ever-present Memphis Mafia?
J.Drury: "Oh no, they knew that Elvis and I were friends. They left us alone. We didn’t have any problems with them. When Elvis first came to California in 1956, he didn’t know anybody. He had to have some familiar faces around him, people he trusted that could take care of him, be his bodyguards, and be his friends. Some were cousins, and some had been with him since Humes High School. In other words, life-long friends. Elvis wanted them around him, and he was making tremendously big money which enabled him to support them for many years.
Q. Did you run into Elvis after Love Me Tender wrapped?
JD: Very definitely — I was friends with Elvis for the rest of his life. Anytime he was playing in a city where I was I’d go to see his concert. I would never call him backstage or anything, but he would always know I was there. He had “spies” in the audience. Before very long, he’d send a message to me. A guy would come over and say, “Elvis wants you to come to his dressing room after the show.” I would go and spend hours with him [On the road Presley avoided backstage socializing, spending minimal time in the venue before showtime. Q. Did you go to any of his Las Vegas shows at the International / Hilton Hotel?
JD: I went to see Elvis in Vegas several times over the course of the years, and maybe in Denver one time.

'Rare items unearthed in Graceland archives: At Graceland this year, archivist Angie Marchese has been giving Elvis fans a behind-the-scenes look in her Inside the Archives videos. Posted on Graceland’s official Instagram account, the latest saw the Elvis historian surprised by one particular item uncovered in the archives.
At the start of the video, Angie found a members receipt for the American Guild of Variety Artists, dated October 3, 1956.
But it was the second randomly selected item that surprised the Elvis historian. Angie picked out a brand new cheque book from the National Bank of Commerce, with the first one being for the Presley rental account.
She said: “I’ve never heard of this |

account! Think I’m going to have to do some research on that to see what that one’s about.” Perhaps it was a bank account Elvis used for when he rented particular items he didn’t want to keep?
Meanwhile, another of Elvis’ possessions had a connection to his early girlfriend June Juanico. It was a matchbook from the Buena Vista hotel in Biloxi, Mississippi, presumably from around the mid-1950s when they were dating.
Angie enthused: “Wow! Elvis was in Biloxi on vacation with June Juanico. I wonder if this is where they stayed.”
Finally, the Graceland historian uncovered a very early possession of Elvis’ father Vernon Presley.
Angie showed fans Vernon Presley’s United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America union dues book from 1942. The item said the initiation fee was $50 and even had Vernon’s birthdate on it of April 10, 1916.

(Interview) Grace Pearl, author of Beyond the Stars My Seven Years with Elvis, talks to EIN: Grace Pearl is a medium. Her latest book, Beyond the Stars My Seven Years with Elvis, was recently published. Grace kindly agreed to talk to EIN about her new book and her relationship with what she calls the Entity of Elvis Presley, recalling conversations that vary from what brought him to drug abuse, to admissions about his one true love, even discussions about the meaning of life.
In the interview Grace Pearl explains,"Everyone has experienced telepathy. You suddenly think of a person you haven’t heard from in six months. The telephone rings and it’s that person. Suddenly, comes to you an idea you would have never thought of about a particular situation you’re dealing with. And you feel a strong emotion with it.... An amazing sequence of events, which happened to me in the course of a year, led me to be in direct contact with Elvis. They happened so unexpectedly that I lived each of them somewhat naturally. I hadn’t done anything to make them happen, they just did."
This is an intriguing and interesting interview which will likely engross some readers and frustrate others.

David Stanley Talks Elvis: The UK tabloids keep posting "new" Elvis stories, and although badly fact-checked they at least show Elvis' on-going popularity in the UK.
Recently they featured "David Stanley says Elvis' inner torment caught up with him in the end"
... Elvis' step-brother David Stanley grew up alongside The King at Graceland and was with him until the very end as an inner member of the Memphis Mafia.
David Stanley became part of Elvis' family in 1960 when his mother Dee married the star's father, Vernon Presley, on July 3, 1960. He grew up living next door to Graceland and, when he was old enough, became part of the inner circle who made sure everything went smoothly and exactly as Elvis wanted. David was even there in the bathroom at The King's Memphis mansion on the night Elvis died.
Stanley describes a man who was always struggling with his gifts and his fame, who struggled to allow people to truly know and love him.
As a child, he just remembers being taken to school in a pink Cadillac by the man who "looked over at me and he picked me up and he gave me a hug and he welcomed me into his family. |

"He took me in and he shared his life with me. He knew that my dad had been swept out of my life, and he did that replacement thing."
But as David grew up, he started to understand the pressures his step-brother was under and to see a man struggling to feel worthy of all his extraordinary gifts.
David said: "When people talk about him and how big he is, he was such a magnet, people were just drawn to him.
"He had a hard time being that. I mean, he was being Elvis Presley. I think in the end that's what caught up with him.
"How do you become a person that everybody loves? How do you become a person everybody adores and follows and wants to be around and wants that pat on the back?"
He says Elvis struggled with more than just fame. The star famously delved deeper and deeper into spiritualism in his final years, rooted in his sincere attempts to make sense of his life
David added: "Watching him being Elvis, cool Elvis, up Elvis, down Elvis, sad Elvis, the great entertainer he was, watching him do that and towards the end, watching him go through that... Many times Elvis would sit down by himself and say, 'Why me? Why I do have these phenomenal gifts?'
He always wanted to share it but he always had that problem of, 'why has this been bestowed on me?'"
Elvis "went the extra mile to make you feel special" and yet was not able to let others do the same for him.

He explained: "Elvis loved to love people but it was difficult for Elvis letting people love him or letting us love him. He would just go inside himself and try to figure out who he was."
No matter how much those around the star tried to help him, especially towards the end, David added: "Elvis was ultimately responsible for himself. We could only take care of him as much as we could."

It includes, "Elvis meets the Nashville Cats with glorious results" and "This finds Presley at his thrilling best — vamping, scatting, and even swearing, in thrall to the performance. “I said you’re long, lean and lanky, sweet as she can be, motherfucker now!” he vamps in the “Got My Mojo Working” medley. At the jam’s end, someone shouts, “Damn right!” and the boss laughs. “It’s that type of material that’s not good or bad, it’s just mediocre shit,” Elvis says of the performance. He couldn’t be more wrong.
“We’re not trying to change history,” Matt Ross-Spang says of the updated mixes,“But it’s amazing, with the abilities we have, to go back and showcase how invested Elvis was in the music and in the songs.”
“It was all night,” McCoy says of those wild, dusk-to-dawn sessions. “Elvis would sleep all day and then he came in raring to go. I walked out of the studio with just enough time to go to breakfast and go to my next session.” -

Lock of Elvis hair Sells for US$5,200: A lock of hair from Elvis Presley has sold for £4,000 at a UK auction.
It was sold by collector Tom Unwin, 75, from Staffordshire, who bought it 10 years ago.
The dark strands were collected by Elvis hairdresser Homer Gilleland and sold after Presley's 1977 death.
Gilleland got to know Elvis in the 1950s when he cut his mum Gladys' hair.
He later styled Presley's hair on tour, movie sets and at Graceland.
Tom Unwin noted, "I've had so much enjoyment from my memorabilia, I would like others to experience that same enjoyment. I bought the hair about 10 years ago and Elvis' racquetball racket in 2002. I have been a huge Elvis fan since I was 15 and collected memorabilia all my life, everything you can imagine to do with Elvis. I've been to Graceland a few times and met members of his band and his wife Priscilla Presley."

New November 1970 Import Set: The 'Tupelo' label promises a must-have 50th Anniversary 4-CD set from Elvis' November 1970 tour.
Elvis' Portland, Nov 11 1970 concert has been previously released several times on bootleg, as has Seattle Nov 12 'The Thrill Goes On' and the audience recording of L.A Nov 14 plus Oklahoma City Nov 16 as a poor audience recording.

'From Elvis In Nashville' OUT NOW: Great news as Elvis' 2020 major release 'From Elvis In Nashville' is out now, even delivered by the Australian postman at 9am this morning. (Despite rumours the release would be delayed in Australia).
And it is an absolute gem, capturing Elvis creating some truly magnificent Nashville magic. While these Marathon Sessions have often been compared unfavourably with the life-changing 1969 Memphis Sessions Elvis and his core musicians work truly hard as the camarderie between them inspire some of Elvis' best work of the 70s.

The shame is that the core soul of the original recordings of Elvis and the Nashville Cats would often be hidden by the later orchestral overdubs or clean ups.
As the publicity says, "these sessions are presented in pristine audio, newly mixed by acclaimed engineer Matt Ross-Spang without the added overdubs of earlier releases - in other words how Elvis would sound if you were in the room with him" and it is right.
There are delights to discover in the previously unreleased Undubbed Masters such as I've Lost You, The Sound Of Your Cry, The Fool, It's Your Baby You Rock It, Stranger In The Crowd, Mary In The Morning, Just Pretend, even Bridge Over Troubled Water never before officially released as Undubbed but with harmony vocal.
While others such as I Really Don't Want To Know,The Next Step Is Love, Funny How Time Slips Away, I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water, even Only Believe have a new "fuller" more soulful feel courtesy of the Matt Ross-Spang new audio mixes.
The 28 booklet is packed full of information plus two detailed articles, four pages by Ernst Jorgensen on the session themselves plus an interesting 7-page essay by Nashville author David Cantwell explaining how the musicians all came together to create such important music. |

Ernst writes, "What Elvis called "sitting ready" essentially meant that he expected the musicians share his inspired moments and instantly fall in with whatever he began singing.... Spontaneity was key, and to Elvis, it was always about the feel, and not about perfection."
A core thread is that it was the RCA Range & Hill supplied material that let the overall quality drop and plenty of those tracks never even get mentioned in Ernst's session essay.
Like the STAX 2013 deluxe SONY release and 'Way Down In The Jungle Room' once again it is Elvis' pure recordings that prove he was still a force to be reckoned with after the musical renaissance of the 1969 Chips Moman Sessions.
This is a MUST BUY for any Elvis Fan.

‘From Elvis in Nashville’ WSJ Review: The Wall Street Journal has positively reviewed the new ‘From Elvis in Nashville' set.
The review, "Elvis The King Captured in His Favorite Form" includes....
A CD set documenting Presley’s intimate 1970 sessions in Music City bears out the singer’s view that he was at his best live in the studio with a responsive band.
... While Elvis was willing to do multiple takes for complex, multitrack productions when that was called for, he believed he was recorded best working live in the studio with a responsive band right at hand. “From Elvis in Nashville” proves his instincts were correct.

Elvis works with an evolved set of players here... with a loose, funky rhythm section, Elvis' comfort and identification with these players is palpable, their broad versatility liberating for him, as tidbits of uncensored outtake conversations underscore.
Presley was a music fan with broad, deep roots-music interests as much as a practitioner. That’s unquestionable. He leads the band, in the course of these sessions, back into rockabilly (Jerry Lee Lewis’s “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” and Sanford Clark’s “The Fool”); blues, with Muddy Waters’s “Got My Mojo Working”; and gospel both serious (“Where Did They Go, Lord;” “Only Believe”) and in the American tall-tale hokum vein (“I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago”). The excursion is as much fun as it sounds like it would be.
The artist’s ease and innovation recording in RCA Nashville’s Studio B, and his enduring welcome there, will likely surprise many. Elvis Presley was very much at home in Nashville, Tenn. and with this R&B-practiced band behind him now, he was all the more so. You can hear it.

Elvis #5 Top-Earning Dead Celebrity: Last year ELVIS jumped back up the Forbes charts to become #2 Top-Earning Dead Celebrity but this year he has taken a bad hit, dropping down to Number 5 but still earning an easy $23 million without getting out of bed.
Michael Jackson again tops Forbes magazine's annual list of the highest-earning deceased celebrities but with an estimated of $48 million income, a drop of 12mill from last year, with his Music catalog (which includes Elvis and Aretha Franklin!) and a long-term Sony deal accounting for more than 70% of his earnings.
Dr. Seuss gets #2 thanks to a series of seven-figure TV and film deals with books still Dr. Seuss’ biggest income stream earns $33 million.
Charlie Brown & Snoopy creator Charles Schulz stays at #3, while Arnold Palmer also holds at #4 with his Arizona Beverages deal bringing in millions.
Elvis' income was truly hit by the coronavirus as Graceland closed for two months this year and is now operating at reduced capacity with earnings dropping by millions.
Sadly, there are also young newcomers to the list 21-year-old rapper Juice WRLD (No. 7) who died December 2019 earned $15 million and NBA Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant, who was killed in a helicopter crash in January, is ranked No. 6, having earned $20 million.
The top ten also featured Bob Marley with $14 million, John Lennon $13 million and Prince with $10 million.

''Elvis 1' 1977 Cadillac for Private Sale: Elvis purchased many Cadillacs during his lifetime for both his personal use and as gifts for family, friends and fans. Elvis' 1977 maroon and silver Cadillac Seville - V8 automatic is the last known Cadillac driven by the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
The Cadillac was purchased by Elvis in October 1976 for his own use and he chose the burgundy and silver colour scheme himself and had a CB radio installed.
Elvis was seen driving the car the day before his death in August 1977. Later Vernon, gave the car to Elvis’ girlfriend, Ginger Alden.
The car is in its original condition and still has the CB radio which Elvis used to communicate with the kitchen at Graceland and the guard house outside to open the gates.

It was auctioned by Graceland in 2014.
The car was purchased by a UK fan and collector and until recently was on display at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, Hampshire, England.
However the 'Elvis 1 Cadillac' is now in storage in the UK and the owners are looking for a private buyer
The number plate is the original "Elvis 1" and it is being sold so they can utilise the funds for another project.
They are interested in legitimate buyers only and no time wasters.

'Night of the Dragon' New Import CD: Straight Arrow is pleased to bring you a new double CD dedicated to Elvis' Summer Las Vegas '74 season, the Wednesday, August 28th 1974 Dinner & Midnight shows. The 1974 summer season was always rated as controversial due to Elvis in-between-songs comments in several shows. Nevertheless, musically, all shows were very good.
These August 28th recordings are directly from recently discovered first generation copies of the original audience-recorded mastertapes, never before in circulation!
Both play lists included several songs unique to this season: "It's Midnight", "Big Boss Man" and funky "If You Talk in Your Sleep," the latter with a karate demo midway. His song selection demonstrated his expertise in a great variety of musical genres most of all, perhaps the stirring performances of "How Great Thou Art." Worth to mention is the rare inclusion of "My Boy" which was presented only once in 1974 (by request).

'Ol’ Swivel Hips Still Wovs’ Em' New Import Box-set: This 1977 deluxe box set 'Ol’ Swivel Hips Still Wovs’ Em' (EIN comments what the hell does "wovs them" mean, presumably "Wows them" is what they meant) is focused on the third tour of 1977 April-May 1977. Elvis’ live performances in 1977 are often criticized and not without a reason. But Elvis was still offering his fans an enjoying time, the magic of seeing Elvis in person probably exceeded the fact he often delivered a standard and sometimes even mediocre performance. The reactions of the spectators are very telling. They scream, shout and get wild for their hero. This set mostly contains soundboard & multitrack recordings but also contains two rare audience recordings. These high quality audience recordings of the April 27 & 30 performances deserve a place in this box set.
This 6 cd set includes a wonderful booklet with many rare and unpublished photo’s.

Q. Elvis died 43 years ago, what do you think fans will learn from your book?
Sally Hoedel: Fans will learn what Elvis was struggling with health-wise throughout his life, not just in the final years. Everyone knows the struggling Elvis as the bloated image of 1977, but the Elvis of 1957 already had a number of ailments. My book traces when they were first evident. This is so important because when there is evidence of disease/disorder prior to fame then it can be concluded that the disease/disorder was not the end result of the prescription medication problem. The book also traces, when possible, where the ailments came from in the family tree and by doing so, truly explains Gladys’ death in a way that has never been done before. Explaining one, gives us answers for the other as both their lives were cut short.

SH: There are many reasons why Elvis’ decline is still making headlines. One is that his demise was so visual…he went from a perfect looking human to a visibly compromised man. Second, who else is known around the world by their first name? Elvis is as recognizable as Coca-Cola and Mickey Mouse yet the world tends to forget that he was a human being and not just an image. That leads to the third reason, which is the fact that so much of what general pop culture knows about Elvis is false. He is a man so shrouded in myth and legend that he is rarely allowed to exist within his own humanity.
Q. If you had known Elvis could you have saved him?
SH: If I had known Elvis during his lifetime, I could not have saved him. The point of my book is that no one could, not even Elvis himself.

'Bruce Jackson, On The Road With Elvis' Delayed to March / April 2021: Fans have been contacting EIN asking what has happened to this up-coming FTD release. Earlier we noted that “Bruce Jackson: On the Road with Elvis” was postponed to November - but now FTD have announced that it will delayed to "Spring" 2021. This is, as suspected, due to overseas transport costs of the book from Australia and the pricing of the overall package.

Around the same time as the ECEG EP release, "See The USA The Elvis Way" EP (based on the ECEG EP art design) was released exclusively in Australia and New Zealand. For this 2-LP limited edition, we have mirrored this rare design that included a publicity portrait from Spinout. Elvis recorded the songs on september 28 and 29, 1966.

(Book Review) From Elvis in Memphis (Eric Wolfson): The 150th volume in the popular Bloomsbury Academic 33 1/3 series of music history and criticism books is Eric Wolfson’s From Elvis in Memphis (due out on 12 November).

'ELVIS For President' 2020: The votes are nearly counted and sadly ELVIS PRESLEY does not seem to be in the running this year. Elvis' appearances on the campaign trail were extremely low-key with his campaign manager, Nigel Patterson, stating that due to the pandemic Elvis would rather be working with his social media accounts to enthuse people to vote for his party rather than actually be out and about in the ghetto. Asked where exactly Elvis stood between the GOP Red and Democrats Blue, Patterson said Elvis was "Just a little bit of Green".
Mr Presley's main slogans of "Viva Las Vegas" did not seem to resonate in Nevada, and similarly "Kentucky Rain" did not delight voters in the Bluegrass State.
Some postal votes seem to have been mismanaged for Presley with many of them being handed back "Return To Sender"
When asked for comment Presley stated that he didn't do that badly, noting that Grammy-winning Kanye West only got 57,000 votes total across the 12 states in which he was in the running.
Presley said of this election that there was "too much monkey business" but "please don't stop loving me, as I'll be back!"

"Elvis and the Arizona" New film in the works: The recent edition of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser featured a request for fans who might have been there at Elvis' 1961 Bloch Arena show. Wow, they would be pretty old by now.
Foundation looking for 1961 Elvis concertgoers for new documentary film on USS Arizona Memorial
Were you at the Elvis Presley concert at Pearl Harbor’s Bloch Arena on March 25, 1961?
If so, then the nonprofit World War II Foundation is interested in interviewing you for a new documentary film in the works, “Elvis and the Arizona” to be narrated by country music star Brantley Gilbert.
The nonprofit based in Rhode Island produces films on individual personal stories from World War II as part of its mission to educate younger generations about the war. President and filmmaker Tim Gray said the foundation is now seeking Hawaii residents who went to that concert to interview for the film while its crew is on Oahu on December 6.
“We are interested in your memories of that day and seeing Elvis in person at Bloch Arena,” said Gray in an email. “We are also looking to film any moments from the concert such as ticket stubs and personal photos.”
Presley, the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” played a huge role in helping to bring the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor to fruition, according to Gray.

helped raise money for the struggling memorial project, but also helped revive the nation’s passion for honoring those killed at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
The film is the 29th one by the World War II Foundation, which has already produced several focused on Pearl Harbor, narrated by stars ranging from Gary Sinise to Tom Selleck and Matthew Broderick.

The film is planned to be shown the US Public Broadcast Network at the end of 2021.

Sean Connery Dead aged 90: Sir Sean Connery has died at the age of 90. The Scottish actor was best known for his portrayal of James Bond, being the first to bring the role to the big screen and appearing in seven of the spy thrillers. Sir Sean died peacefully in his sleep in the Bahamas. His acting career spanned seven decades and he won an Oscar in 1988 for his role in The Untouchables. Connery's other films included The Hunt for Red October, Highlander, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The Rock.
Elvis of course loved new gadgets and loved James Bond. If only Elvis had had the chance to perform as Agent 007.

In 1962 Sean Connery stared in the very first James Bond movie 'Dr. No', the film also featured Ursula Andress, as well as Elvis' friend Jack Lord.
It was Ursula Andress' performance as 'Honey Rider that helped her get the co-star role in Elvis' 1963 film 'Fun in Acapulco'.
In fact 'Fun in Acapulco' was Andress' first US speaking role as in 'Dr No' her voice had been overdubbed due to her heavy accent.
Priscilla confirmed Elvis' love of James Bond and Sean Connery back in 2014.
She explained that Elvis had always loved gadgets and technology and had one of the first home VCRs, TV remote controls, 'Mobile telephone' (in a case), and even the first microwave in Memphis.
She claimed that Elvis was one of the first people to get a "global phone", something he became obsessed with after he saw one in a James Bond movie.

Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason on Elvis: Nick Mason, Pink Floyd's drummer, was a founder member and the only member to feature on every Pink Floyd album since its formation in 1965.
In a recent NME interview he named Elvis' ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ as "The first song I fell in love with"
He noted, “The beginning of rock ’n’ roll. Elvis was moving things on slightly from Bill Haley. Bill Haley was the first record I ever bought and I almost certainly bought it as a ’78rpm, not as a 45, which shows my age!”
“That black and white picture of Elvis and ‘Elvis Presley’ in neon green and neon pink lettering, the first album he made. It had ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ on it and ‘Hound Dog', ‘I Got A Woman’, it was absolutely stuffed with his early hits. It was still a period when you bought records from an electrical shop, somewhere at the back of the shop after you’d gone past all the washing machines and fridges, there’d be a booth with records. I would’ve bought it there rather than a record store with those weird hairdryer booths.”

Cliff Richard Talks Elvis: Sir Cliff Richard, who recently turned 80, acknowledges that Elvis was his inspiration and muse for a career in rock and roll. But after he rose to fame with The Shadows, Sir Cliff claimed fans were divided and either supported him or the US star. In his new autobiography The Dreamer, he reflected on their rivalry and revealed how a touching comment “made my life”.
Richard claimed that if he had “never heard or seen Elvis” he would likely have “remained plain old Harry Webb” – the star’s real name.

Priscilla explained that her late husband would have supported her decision “because Elvis knew all about his competition. Elvis kept an eye on his main rivals, all over the world. He certainly knew all about you!”
Richard added, “When I was starting out, in the early days of rock and roll, I used to visit schools.
“The kids always told me they were split in half – half of them liked Elvis, the other half liked me.
“I still meet women of my age today, who tell me, ‘Oh, my sister loved you, but I always used to love Elvis’. ‘Ha! Me, too’, I usually say.”

Just listen to an outstanding version of "What Now My Love" which is probably better than the later released "Aloha" version since it has more "feel" to it.

Just catch his "Hound Dog's" he is throwing in the crowd.

Stan Kesler Memphis Great, dead at 92: Stan Kesler, who composed 'I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone', 'Playing for Keeps' and 'I Forgot to Remember to Forget' while also working at Sun Records has died aged 92.
Stan Kesler was a key figure in Memphis music history as a musician, songwriter, engineer and producer.
He was a pivotal figure in the Memphis birth of rock 'n' roll and helped enhance the careers of rock and soul legends such as Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, James Carr, and Sam the Sham.
Kesler who had suffered from deteriorating health for some time, passed away Monday with bone cancer.
Kesler made major contributions to dozens of records, he composed songs for Elvis, played bass on "Great Balls of Fire," produced the classic Sam the Sham hit 'Wooly Bully' and engineered recordings at Goldwax.
One of 10 children, Stanley Augustus Kesler was born in Abbeville, Mississippi, where music was a family affair.
As a boy, he learned to play guitar, mandolin and dobro while harmonizing with various family members and then would move to Memphis in the early fifties.
There he played with local band the house band at the Cotton Club in West Memphis and found his way to Sam Phillips' studio at 706 Union Ave.

At SUN Kesler began working as an engineer, and soon established his bona fides as a musical jack-of-all-trades.
It was at Sun Studios that Elvis would record two songs co-written by Kesler, "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone," and "I Forgot to Remember to Forget."
The Kesler-Elvis connection remained strong throughout Elvis' career. In 1957 Elvis recorded Kesler's composition 'Playing for Keeps', then 'Thrill of Your Love' which featured on the 1960 album 'Elvis Is Back!'.
And in at the 1969 Chips Moman sessions Elvis recorded Kesler's "If I'm a Fool (for Loving You)."
During the heyday of Sun, Kesler was one of the first people in Memphis to own an electric bass and played on records by Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis, including Lewis' classic 1957 hit, 'Great Balls of Fire'.
Some others who recorded Kesler songs include Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, Wanda Jackson and John Prine.
While producing at 'Goldwax' it was Kesler who first organised the band of session musicians that became "The Memphis Boys" who then were used by Chips Moman at American Sound where they provided the crucial backing for Elvis, Neil Diamond, Dusty Springfield and many others.
In the 1980s, Kesler returned to performing as part of the Sun Rhythm Section, a reunited group of Sun veterans that toured all over the world after getting together for a Smithsonian Institute festival in Washington in the 1980s celebrating the stunning creativity that was SUN Studios.

'Heartbreak Hotel' original handwritten lyrics For Auction: On November 19 / 20 Weiss Auctions will be offering the original handwritten lyrics to the classic 1956 Elvis Presley hit song Heartbreak Hotel.
The two day event will also feature other rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia, sports and Hollywood collectibles.
- Heartbreak Hotel was written in October 1955 by Mae Boren Axton, a high school teacher with a background in musical promotion, and Tommy Durden, a Jacksonville singer-songwriter.
The lyrics were inspired by a newspaper account of a man who committed suicide by jumping to his death from a hotel window, leaving a note that said, “I walk a lonely street.” Axton presented the song to Presley and he loved it, recording the hit in January 1956 for his new label, RCA Victor.
Axton and Durden’s signed lyrics, in pencil with corrections, is a rare slice of rock’n’roll history.
The Friday, November 20th session headlined by the Heartbreak Hotel lyrics and copy of Yoko Ono’s 1964 book Grapefruit signed by John Lennon and Yoko) will also feature Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan signed albums, with both having certificates of authenticity; a signed Bruce Springsteen “Rosalita” tour jacket; a collection of signed checks including ones from Marilyn Monroe, George Harrison, Orville Wright, Chester A. Arthur and Benjamin Harrison.

Ben Keough was the son of Lisa Marie and ex-husband, singer-songwriter Danny Keough.
The former couple also share daughter Riley Keough, 31. Lisa Marie Presley also shares twin daughters, Harper and Finley, 12, with guitarist Michael Lockwood, whom she was married to from 2006 to 2016.
Riley Keough also posted about her brother "Happy Birthday beautiful angel." .
Ben and Lisa Marie had a special bond, she revealed that Mother's Day 2009 the two got matching Celtic eternity knot tattoos.

'Bruce Jackson, On The Road With Elvis' The Lost Album!: Fans have been contacting EIN asking what has happend to this up-coming FTD release. Earlier we noted that “Bruce Jackson: On the Road with Elvis” was postponed to November. But now even that seems uncertain. The original books were stored here in Australia, with the CDs being printed in the EU, so the uncertainty about overseas transport costs and the pricing of the overall package is now an issue.
Most Elvis dealers are no longer offering it for Pre-order while Elvis Australia says it is "Sold Out" - which is ridiculous as it hasn't been released yet, nor even priced.
Combined with a 3CD set, an audio documentary hosted by Jack Mullins (singer/songwriter) plus a soundboard recording of the Sioux Falls 10-18-76, and Atlanta 12-30-76 shows.
Fans will just have to wait for a confirmation from FTD.
A November release seems unlikely.

'Elvis In Nashville' Graceland Video: EPE have shared a short video about Elvis' time in Nashville.
Archivist Angie Marchese talks about Elvis hotspots in the city to help publicise the upcoming release of 'From Elvis in Nashville' next month.
Starting at Nashville's famous Country Music Hall of Fame Marchese notes, "Not only is Elvis a member, but you can also see his gold Cadillac on display."
She also visits the Ryman Auditorium (original home of the Grand Ole Opry) plus historic RCA Studio B.
Marchese gets her facts wrong ridiculously stating.. "This is not only where Elvis recorded 'Heartbreak Hotel' in January 1956 but went on to record over 250 amazing songs, right here on this property." EIN adds, Elvis' first RCA session & 'Heartbreak Hotel' was at 1525 McGavock St, a Methodist Church TV and Radio centre, not at Studio B!

New Presley Grave in Meditation Garden: In somewhat sombre news there is a new addition to the Graceland Meditation Garden as Benjamin Storm Presley Keough was laid to rest in the Meditation Garden, October 1, at Graceland with his family including his grandfather, Elvis Presley, great-grandmother, Gladys Presley, great-grandfather, Vernon Presley and great-great-grandmother, Minnie Mae Presley.
Lisa Marie Presley's son, who died at age 27 in mid-July, was buried in Meditation Garden at Graceland.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office ruled on July 14 that Keough's official cause of death was a shotgun wound and the manner of death was ruled suicide.
Lisa Marie's rep said at the time, "She is completely heartbroken, inconsolable and beyond devastated but trying to stay strong for her 11-year-old twins and her oldest daughter, Riley. She adored that boy. He was the love of her life."

Mac Davis Dead aged 78: In truly tragic news Mac Davis died Tuesday night (Sept. 29) following heart surgery. He was 78.
Mac Davis’ longtime manager Jim Morey announced his death, “Mac Davis has been my client for over 40 years, and, more importantly, my best friend. He was a music legend, but his most important work was that as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.
I will miss laughing about our misadventures on the road and his insightful sense of humor."
In addition to Elvis other artists who recorded his compositions were Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Glen Campbell, Tom Jones and Johnny Cash. But the Grammy nominee saved some of his best work for himself, scoring hits with the Grammy-nominated “Baby Don’t Get Hooked on Me,” which he took to No. 1 in 1972, as well as “Stop and Smell the Roses” and “It's Hard To Be Humble." His success, and general affability and charisma, led to his own NBC variety series in 1974, the same year the Academy of Country Music named him entertainer of the year.
Born Morris Mac Davis on Jan. 21, 1942 in Lubbock, Texas, Davis was a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. After |

relocating to Los Angeles he became a staff writer for Nancy Sinatra's publishing company. He began to get cuts for a number of artists, including "Watching Scotty Grow" for Bobby Goldsboro and "Something's Burning'" for Kenny Rogers & The First Edition, as well as a spate of ELVIS records, including 'A Little Less Conversation,' 'Memories,' 'Don't Cry Daddy,' and 'In The Ghetto' which Presley took to No. 3 on the Hot 100 chart. The song has been recorded by more than 170 artists, including Parton, whose version reached No. 50 on Hot Country Songs.
Davis noted that, "'Memories' was the first real hit I had. I wrote for Elvis' comeback special. They had asked for a song about looking back over the years, and oddly enough, I had to write it in one night. I stayed up all night at Billy Strange's house in Los Angeles. He had a little office set up in his garage. I wrote it right there."
Whether penning songs for himself or others, Davis seemed effortlessly able to write music addressing any topic from the scourge of racial inequity in "In the Ghetto" and the pitfalls of fame in the humorous "It's Hard to Be Humble" to the confessional "Texas In My Rearview Mirror." His lyrics were often as poignant as they were tongue-in-cheek, but always right on point.

Davis's musical and TV success catapulted him to movies, including 1979's North Dallas Forty with Nick Nolte, 1981's Cheaper to Keep Her and The Sting II with Jackie Gleason in 1983.
He also starred on Broadway in The Will Rogers Follies, and guested on numerous TV shows, including Murder She Wrote, The Muppets, Webster, King of The Hill and Fargo.
His last acting appearance was as a preacher on an episode of Parton's 2019 Heartstrings series on Netflix.
Reba McEntire said, "Thank you, dear Lord Jesus, for letting us know the man to whom you gave the most incredible talent. He entertained and spread joy to so many people. What a wonderful legacy he left all of us with his music. Mac was one of a kind."
Davis is survived by his wife of 38 years, Lise, and sons Scott, Noah and Cody, along with a number of other relatives, including his mother, Edith.
He will be buried in Lubbock, befittingly, given the memorable line from "Texas in My Rearview Mirror"- "And when I die, you can bury me in Lubbock, Texas in my jeans."

(Book Review) Elvis Firearm & Weapon Collector An Illustrated Compendium (Paul Belard): The latest photobook from prolific Elvis author/researcher, Paul Belard, Elvis Firearm & Weapon Collector An Illustrated Compendium, focuses on one of Elvis’ major passions. Elvis’ love of guns (and other weapons) is well known, but until now there has not been a detailed narrative and visual record of this passion. Belard has managed to compile a visually impressive and narratively comprehensive account, presenting hundreds of Elvis’ guns, knives, holsters, and other associated items, and most of the items are in color.
With interesting background information and a range of rare archival material (including affidavits, auction records, and letters of
provenance) this book is an important one which neatly fills a hole in

EIN Spotlight: Changing Times, Heavy books, and the two-class Elvis world: While a lot of fans believe Col Parker was bad for Elvis the one thing the Colonel usually got right was to look after the fans. From reasonable ticket prices, cheap licensed merchandise and assisting fan clubs, he worked with fans to engender good will and build interest in the latest Elvis releases.
In 2020, the situation is very different. EPE is owned by commercial interests meaning entry costs to Graceland, and buying licensed Elvis merchandise is no longer cheap - and importantly, no longer affordable for many who have been fans since the 1950s.
Another change is Follow That Dream, RCA-SONY, Eric Lorentzen, Venus, etc all now publish expensive "Deluxe" collections. Some costing US$350. Out of reach for most fans, so why is this?
The answer, of course, is money. There is obviously a neat profit in targeting the higher end of the Elvis fan market. In this respect, the proliferation of coffee table Elvis books is similar to the (admittedly) less regular annual Elvis box set extravaganzas from RCA/BMG/Sony. And, of course, plenty of the material in all these publications has usually been previously released but now include a few new additions or "upgrades" to attract customers.

(Book Review) Elvis 1956 – September 9 First Ed Sullivan Show (Paul Belard): The latest Elvis photo-book from prolific author, Paul Belard, has been published. The “limited edition” first pressing focuses on one of the most significant events in the Elvis story, his first appearance on America’s most popular television entertainment program, The Ed Sullivan Show.
Elvis was reviewed at the time as .. Anything more outrageously offensive to good taste, is hard to imagine – within the limits of the law. The young man seems devoid of talent, unless one recognises such a thing as a talent for vulgarity.
How then, does he happen to appear again and again on a program allegedly governed by the American family’s sovereign demand for things of good taste?

UPDATED- 'Elvis: St Louis & Spokane 1976' FTD In-Depth Review: 1976 is not an easy Elvis concert year to review. There were no major set-list changes, no dramatic "emotional roller-coaster" of 1974 and no high-flying "Huntsville" 1975 excitements.
Released as a 2-CD 5” digi-pak, this new FTD set features Elvis at the Kiel Auditorium on March 22 1976 and The Coliseum on April 27 1976.
Both shows were "Closing Nights" of these short 1976 tours where Elvis would often go that little bit further for his loving fans.
Larrie Londin played drums with the TCB band on the March 1976 tour so it will be a treat for collectors to get an official release featuring 'A Different Beat' with Larrie Londin playing at St Louis on March 22, 1976.
Can there really be that much to say about these two concerts, well EIN's coolest reviewers have rustled up over 4000 words.. and check if there any surprises in store..

The MONO vs STEREO debate is a fascinating discussion, so we need to get some facts straight before we investigated the possibilities of this new Elvis "Stereo" release.
The earliest recordings of the sound era were recorded in MONO with the singer and orchestra carefully positioned around one microphone. But even in Sun Studios it was actually Sam Phillips who created Elvis' classic mono recordings.
Elvis and the Blue Moon Boys were not playing "mono" - nor were they recorded via one microphone.
So listening in "Fake Stereo" can fans really learn anything new about how some of these life-changing songs that Elvis recorded in the studio were created?
Is it truly possible that these "DES Stereo" versions actually sound better than their original classic mono vinyl releases?

'ELVIS In The 2010s' A Personal Review of the Past Decade: Rather like Elvis’s own career, each decade since Elvis’s death appears to have had a theme or identity of its own. Clearly the late 1970s were difficult for RCA as they struggled to find the right direction with which to take their posthumous releases, and so it was the 1980s that was the decade when the company slowly but surely learned how to look back at Elvis's legacy and start to make some sense of it.
The 1990s were when that reached a peak, with the decades boxed sets, and the Elvis in the 90s series, thus bringing virtually the whole catalogue back into print in a coherent way.
The 2000s were when errors of judgement at retail level started to occur (despite huge successes like Elv1s), but also when FTD came into its own and flourished.
And so what will we make of Elvis releases of the 2010s when we look back on them from the future?

'The Guitar Player Worth A Damn' - The King In Motion Vol. 4 (Venus Productions): Elvis' 1972 'On Tour' performances have been featured in multiple books as well as the official MGM movie / DVD. The latest Venus Productions multimedia set revisits this tour with a composite book, DVD and CD set. The DVD promises a qualified revamp of "Elvis On Tour" compiled from hours of unreleased footage taken from the best sources available - while the CDs include the never-before-released Hampton Roads Afternoon Show from April 9, 1972 plus an unreleased alternate mix of Elvis' Greensboro April 14, 1972 concert.

'The Fun In Acapulco Sessions' Deluxe FTD Review: Released by FTD back in March 'The Fun In Acapulco Sessions' is a 3-CD set that the publicity noted included more than an hour of previously unreleased false starts and complete takes!

'What was Elvis searching for?' EIN Spotlight: The question is raised – but never answered – in the title of HBO’s recent absorbing, imperfect documentary 'Elvis Presley: The Searcher'.
At the start it seems clear what the teenage Elvis was searching for – an escape from the oblivion of poverty in the American South. Yet his quest was cultural as well as financial.
Later Elvis read obsessively, seeking out such books as The Impersonal Life, Joseph Brenner’s guide to self-discovery and Kahil Gibran’s book of fables, The Prophet. In his copy of Gibran’s tome, Elvis jotted down the line: “A singer can sing his songs but he must have an ear to receive the song”.
So what exactly was Elvis searching for? In this fascinating EIN Spotlight respected author Paul Simpson takes a close look at this all important question which, for some reason, was basically ignored in the recent HBO documentary..

The VINYL Boom: Over 7.6 million vinyl LPs were sold in the USA during the first half of 2018, a 20% increase from the previous year, while in Australia vinyl sales increased by $3 million, the same increase of 20%. In the same period CD sales however dropped by 15%.
Elvis vinyl is still selling very nicely with ‘ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits’ recently in the UK Top ten VINYL charts.

... What is there to say about Elvis Presley that hasn’t already been said?
It may be 41 years since the icon died tragically at only 42 years old but his music continues to live on, and likely will forever. It’s actually mind-blowing to think that his music has survived for almost as long as he was alive. In 2002 Sony Music released a new greatest hits collection titled ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits, which dominated charts across the world and sold millions and millions of copies. 16 years on from its original release, ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits has been reissued on 2LP vinyl.
Taking inspiration from the album cover, the release has been pressed on gold vinyl making the whole package feel very special.
Presley was an incredibly prolific artist so getting this collection down to 31 tracks was no easy feat. It also includes the ALLC Junkie XL remix.
What was achieved with ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits though, is a

collection that gives you all the highlights you need from The King’s career to showcase the incredible impact he had on music. The album opens with Heartbreak Hotel and there isn’t a single filler track here.
It’s actually near impossible to pick out highlights across the 2LPs because every single one of these songs is a classic.
Of course no Elvis collection would be complete without Suspicious Minds and that track is near the end of the track listing on the final side.
The release features the artwork from the original 2002 release and it’s a beautiful, high-quality gatefold. I mentioned earlier about the gold vinyl but what I’ve not commented on yet is the sound. The CD version was a little patchy given that the songs were all recorded at different times. It’s not as noticeable on the vinyl release and the quality is crystal clear. The warm crackle of vinyl adds to the overall feel too.
ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits is a must-have release for any Elvis Presley fan. While he had plenty of great songs that aren’t featured here, this collection truly is the definitive one to own. There’s not a single bad song here and it’s lengthy enough to give you value for money. The whole vinyl package is fantastic and it looks as good as it sounds.
They don’t make artists like Elvis anymore and they probably never will again.

'ELVIS ON TOUR - 45th Anniversary Deluxe Edition' IN-Depth Review: Amiga International's long awaited LIMITED-EDITION boxset featuring 9-CD’s, all remastered, of all known recordings made for the Golden Globe Award-winning concert documentary ELVIS ON TOUR is OUT NOW. UPDATED - Trying To Get To You: The Truth Behind The Elvis And Roy Orbison Show Rumours: For decades there has always been an unsubstantiated rumour that Elvis Presley appeared as a guest on Roy Orbison's TV show on the local station KOSA.
The Roy Orbison website notes that both Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley performed on Roy’s TV show in late 1955.
Respected author Colin Escott wrote in his book Good Rockin’ Tonight about a kinescope of Elvis on the Roy Orbison TV show actually existing.
Some keen Elvis fans have said that they have seen this very kinescope at Elvis Week shows back in the 80s.
But like infamous Pied Piper of Cleveland does this footage really exist and is there any real proof that Elvis did appear on the Roy Orbison TV show?
Shane Brown (author of Reconsider Baby: Elvis: A Listener's Guide) has done an immense amount of investigation and thinks he has found the answer.

Mindi Miller Interview with EIN: Mindi Miller was a working actress when she met Elvis in early 1975. She was interested in karate (she performed all her own movie stunts), exploring spirituality and the Bible and so they had a lot in common.
Mindi Miller and Elvis bonded over their common interests and soon afterwards he asked her to go on tour with him in April 1975.
She stayed friends with Elvis through the years - along with members of the 'Memphis Mafia' - and attended his funeral.

'Marty Lacker: A Life Well-Lived' & Elvis at American Studio's Interview: It was with immense sadness that last month EIN had to report on the death of our great friend - and a true friend to Elvis - Marty Lacker. We will miss him dearly.
Marty is well-known as one of the key members of the Memphis Mafia and also co-Best Man at Elvis' wedding. He was known for both his honesty and being forthright with his opinions. He was the only member of the Memphis Mafia who still watched and commented on recent Elvis News. He had no issue with holding people to account (especially ones who would inflate their importance within Elvis' legacy) and would regularly ask EIN to add his comments or to correct any inaccuracy.
Elvis fans often ask about Marty Lacker's background, how he came to meet Elvis, as well as his involvement in the music industry outside of working for The King.
As a prelude to Ken Sharp's fascinating interview with Marty Lacker and a discussion about Elvis' famous American Studio' Memphis sessions, EIN presents "Marty Lacker: a life well-lived" in which Marty tells of his life in the music industry, his friendship with Elvis along with his dislike of the over-controlling Col Parker.

UPDATED - 'Way Down In The Jungle Room' EIN Review: Released for August 2016 this SONY Legacy pack celebrates the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ last recording sessions which took place in Graceland’s Jungle Room.
The publicity noted the sessions “have been newly mixed by Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording” and “includes both outtakes and in-the-studio dialog, providing a ‘fly-on-the-wall experience’ of what the sessions were like".
Elvis' original 76/77 albums were fairly uninspired collections (bar a few fine singles) and on the original LPs it was almost impossible to glimpse any sign of creative input from Elvis through the syrupy overdubs. It wasn't until the release of FTD’s magnificent ‘The Jungle Room Sessions’ that many fans began to understand the raw emotion, close camaraderie and Elvis’ personal feelings that were revealed by these intimate Graceland sessions.
To produce that same kind of revelation for the 'General Public' would be a very tricky project but that is exactly what the new legacy team has done - and to great effect.

Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage!
The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
