'Stay Tuned: Rock on TV' at Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: Since exploding onto the scene in the post-war 40s, television and rock & roll have reflected social values, shaped the youth culture and created icons.
In its early days, they sat at opposite ends of the table, with tv showcasing the normalcy of nuclear family and strong moral lessons, while rock & roll questioned the establishment with a rebellious attitude. But as television sets became a household fixture, advertisers sought to reach the booming youth and teenage demographic and their expendable pocket money, cracking the door for rock & roll’s acceptance into the mainstream through shows like American Bandstand, The Ed Sullivan Show, and The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.

... In 1956, Elvis Presley got $400 for his second appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show.''
A replica of the check is part of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's new exhibit which opened to the public last week. It's just one of more than a hundred artifacts that take up the top three floors of the museum.
Elvis' blue chair from "Singer Presents Elvis" is also there.
Step off the escalator on the fourth floor, and you're confronted by a massive replica of an old-style television - one with 13 channels on the main dial and a VHF knob for those local stations we all loved.
Step around the corner, and Herman has found the original "American Bandstand'' logo, the one that hung from Dick Clark's studio for all those years as he welcomed the people who eventually would be enshrined in the Rock Hall.

There's a stage-door sign for Sullivan's show, plus the tiny Rickenbacker guitar John Lennon played on the Beatles' debut on "Sullivan."
There is fascination in the the contracts, like Presley's $400 signup to return to the Sullivan show, or the $155 Little Richard got to appear on American Bandstand in 1965. And James Brown's contract that called for him to be paid $210 for an appearance, but $250 for his wardrobe.
The wealth of artifacts will be on view for about a year - and then it will become a traveling show.

‘Queen of the groupies’ Missed Out!: ‘Queen of the groupies’ Pamela Des Barres says that she has bedded some of the biggest names in the music business, including Mick Jagger and Keith Moon and loved Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page but missed out on Elvis supposedly because it was too dangerous!
Promoting her book's reprint Pamela Des Barres now 69 noted, "I’ll never forget that night at the Elvis concert — or the hours spent with Jimmy afterwards on a huge bed up on a pedestal.”
Des Barres said the now 74-year-old British musician happily took “Miss Pamela” on tour with him.
“One time I was on the side of the stage as Jimmy entranced 80,000 fans with his guitar playing. From my vantage point, sitting on Jimmy’s amp, I almost felt like one of the group.
Girls in the audience looked up at me and wondered which one I was sleeping with, and I was so proud. I was exactly who I’d aspired to be — the girlfriend of the lead guitar player in the world’s biggest rock and roll band.”
Des Barres exposed all her shocking escapades 31 years ago in her 1987 memoir, I’m With the Band.
She had a more lighthearted encounter with Jimi Hendrix. She appeared in a short film dancing for his band.
“Hendrix hit on me and it’s impossible to describe his charisma, it was huge. I didn’t sleep with him though — I was only 17 and way too young.”
But she didn’t think twice when it came to Doors front man Jim Morrison.

“I remember thinking, ‘This is the most beautiful man I have ever seen. He was so gorgeous, everything about him was just perfect.”
Des Barres married musician Michael Des Barres in 1973. They had a son named Nicholas in 1978. However, the couple divorced in 1991.
These days, Des Barres is looking to make her own film focusing on her fling with Jagger.
And there was also that opportunity with ELVIS. Except it is a NON-Story!
She states, “I could have met Elvis and spent time with him. I declined that because I had gotten engaged to the man I married. I thought I shouldn’t get caught up with Elvis.”
EIN notes that she married in 1973 so actually went out with Jimmy Page after that - so that is no excuse that she failed to get involved with Elvis!
Yet again ELVIS' legacy is so big that he becomes a feature of a "non-story" to promote a book.

Australian RCM Touring Liquidated: The company behind the recent Elvis / Orchestra and Priscilla tours is being liquidated.
RCM Touring has denied owing over $120,000 to a fellow touring company, after an application to have the organisation liquidated was filed in the Federal Court Of Australia.
Big Deal Touring has accused RCM, operated by talent agent Ralph Carr, of failing to pay thousands of dollars in invoices, totalling $120,300, for work involved in a number of tours which took place in 2017, including Roy Orbison’s Australian hologram tour, which was cancelled last month.
RCM Touring’s solicitors state there is no substance to Big Deal’s claim.

the costs of appearing to fight this in Sydney on 1 June 2018. All our attempts to settle this matter on a commercial basis were rejected out of hand.
The 2018 "Return Tour" for Elvis and the Orchestra was cancelled back in March, after venues were changed.
Other tours in documents filed by Big Deal included the Elvis Presley tour and Priscilla Presley speaking tour.

Bob Dylan and Elvis: May 24 was Bob Dylan's 77th birthday. The Shelia Variations website posted a cute article about these two great musicians.
Bob Dylan has stated that, “When I first heard Elvis Presley’s voice I just knew that I wasn’t going to work for anybody and nobody was going to be my boss. Hearing him for the first time was like busting out of jail.”
and “The highlight of my career? That’s easy, Elvis recording one of my songs.”
Elvis recorded Dylan’s song “Tomorrow is a Long Time” in 1966. Dylan had written it, and recorded a demo of it in the early 60s. He played it in his concerts, and others started recording it. Elvis heard it through Odetta's recording - as featured on the new Elvis: The Searcher Deluxe set (click here for review)
Elvis’ cover was buried on the soundtrack album for the movie Spinout, and it didn’t make a splash of any kind at the time but recently was part of the thread used within The Seracher documentary.

kick-arounds in the 70s, “Don’t Think Twice,” and “I Shall Be Released” – and he liked “Blowin in the Wind”, and would sing it around the piano with his buddies, even though it seems like Elvis and Dylan would have had nothing in common, especially socially/politically.
But “Tomorrow is Such a Long Time” is the best of all of these. It’s haunting, eerie, with Chip Young providing an understated lead guitar. Dylan officially released the song in 1971, I believe, after a decade of performing it live, and a decade where everyone and their grandmother had recorded it. It was one of those songs.
Dylan's “Nobody was going to be my boss” is one of my favorite comments from a fellow musician on the impact Elvis had. There’s also this from Keith Richards’ great memoir.
"But (Elvis was) the one that really turned me on, like an explosion one night, listening to Radio Luxembourg on my little radio when I was supposed to be in bed and asleep, was “Heartbreak Hotel”. That was the stunner. I’d never heard it before, or anything like it. I’d never heard of Elvis before. It was almost as if I’d been waiting for it to happen."

'The King' Elvis Themed Doco Opens in June: Fans should realise that this new doco/film is not about ELVIS (even if his image is in the poster) but rather using Elvis' life and legacy as a exploration of where the US is now.
Filmmaker Eugene Jarecki road trips across the United States in Elvis Presley's 1963 Rolls-Royce, examining the musician's complicated legacy for the new documentary, The King.
In the film, Jarecki traces Elvis' rise and fall, using the rock pioneer's career as a metaphor for America. The new trailer teases the rosy-eyed view of Elvis with fans lining up to admire his Rolls and singing his classic songs. But it also uses the most problematic aspects of Elvis' music and career – including his drug use and thorny relationship with race and cultural appropriation – to explore larger American ills.

Big ELVIS bids at Auction: Julien’s Auctions made history May 19 with the record-breaking sale of Elvis Presley’s “Thunderbird” ensemble belt, a heavily embellished white leather belt worn in a 1972 performance in Hawaii, gifted to actor and friend Jack Lord as it sold for an astounding US$354,400 (estimate $40,000). It is the top-selling belt sold at auction worn by “The King,” achieving a price normally reserved for his jumpsuits. (see below)
The star-shaped diamond ring that Elvis Presley gave to a female fan at a 1975 concert sold for US$120,000.
Donna Lewis was 20 when the King handed her the sparkler – in white gold and featuring 50 stones.
Julien’s Auctions sold over $6 million total in the Music Icons sale, including Property from the Life of Prince.
One of the highly anticipated items a 1965 Fender Telecaster owned by The Band’s Robbie Robertson sold for $490,000. The auction event sold over 600 lots and was held live at Hard Rock Cafe New York.
The historic guitar was played by Bob Dylan on his Going Electric 1966 tour, in addition to Robbie Robertson, Eric Clapton, Levon Helm and George Harrison and numerous notable recordings and performances from Dylan’s Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat to The Band’s legendary set at Woodstock.

Another top-selling guitar was George Harrison’s first electric guitar, a Hofner Club 40, sold for an astounding $430,000. Harrison played it in the early day when The Beatles performed as The Quarrymen. It is considered one of the most historically important guitars as it marks the chapter in music history.

Lisa Marie at Elvis Week Update: Fans who making plans for Elvis Week specially to see Lisa Marie being interviewed need to note that she has changed her itinerary and will now be on August 11.
EPE states, Due to a schedule change, Lisa Marie Presley's appearance at Elvis Week 2018 has been moved from August 15 to a special appearance and interview for the launch of a new project to be announced soon.
Lisa Marie event will now be held on Saturday, August 11, at 1:00 p.m. at the Graceland Soundstage.
EPE notes that more details on this project will be released in the upcoming weeks.
Tickets for the Lisa Marie special appearance and interview event are $30 and on sale now.

On ELVIS LAS VEGAS '74' FTD the dates were wrong with the two shows reversed from what the cover indicated.
Do FTD collectors deserve better or should we be happy to have anything released with faults and all?

Two New FTD releases: FTD has announced two new releases for early June 2018.
- 'ELVIS: OFF - ON STAGE' single CD 7" digipack.
This 1CD set features Elvis in great form from his legendary shows in February 1970 at the International Hotel, Las Vegas.
The album is a compilation of tracks from various performances. Twelve tracks are unreleased performances while 4 are newly remixed tracks.
On a positive note Bob Lanning Elvis' drummer at the shows and author /concert producer Arjan Deelen were both involved with FTD on this collection.
As a 7" digipack it should be a fine addition to our collection.

Elvis Omega watch sells for $1.8 Million!: The watch gifted to Elvis Presley by RCA Records to celebrate his sale of 75-million records sold at an auction in Geneva today for $1,812,500. It is the highest price ever paid for an Omega watch.
It was estimated to sell for around $100,000. The Omega watch retailed by Tiffany & Co ended up selling for an incredible $1,812,500, including buyer's premium.
The 18k white gold watch has the back engraved "To Elvis, 75 Million Records, RCA Victor, 12-25-60". The bezel is set with 44 round brilliant diamonds, and the dial contains no numerals, only markers.
The story behind the watch is that Elvis was sitting in a restaurant when he was approached by a man who said, "nice watch." Elvis glanced at the man's watch, a diamond-set Hamilton, and replied, "I like your watch too. Do you want to trade?" It was consigned to auction by the man's nephew.
The watch was bought by the OMEGA Museum in Biel / Bienne with them paying a new world record for any OMEGA watch ever purchased.
It will be displayed in their Omega museum.

Rita Moreno says Brando better lover than Elvis! This week 86-year-old Rita Moreno had some sexy secrets to dish out on the "Wendy Williams Show".
Moreno, Emmy, Oscar, Grammy and Tony awards winner, revealed that Elvis Presley may have been dubbed "The King" when it came to music but he was no match for Marlon Brando in the lovemaking department.
"Marlon slayed me good 'cause he was the king of everything. Eeeeverything! He was the king of movies and he was really one of the most sexual men on Earth. |

It was one of those very tempestuous love affairs. It lasted eight years, on and off, on and off, on and off."
Rita Moreno, who was just 22 when she met Brando (seven years her senior), told Williams she wanted to marry the "Streetcar Named Desire" star, but he had no interest in limiting himself to one woman.
She recalled finding that out the hard way when she discovered she wasn't the only woman Brando was sleeping with.
"One time when I found some lingerie that was not mine, I just went home devastated, weeping and crying," but then noted that "something wonderful happened the next day."
That wonderful thing was none other than Elvis, who "liked what he saw" and asked to meet with her.
Moreno immediately accepted, as Brando's infidelity was "still on my mind."
What was good for the goose was not good for the gander, however, and Brando was furious when he found about her fling with the "Heartbreak Hotel" singer.
"The man threw chairs," quipped Moreno of Brando's jealousy. "It was wonderful!"
Yet when it came to lovemaking, Moreno admitted that Presley wasn't even in the same league as Brando.
"That's like a two-year-old and the king," she said in comparing the two.

The Searcher's Thom Zimny to speak at Ridgefield Playhouse: Thom Zimny, the director of one of the most celebrated HBO documentaries of the year will appear at the Ridgefield Playhouse to provide behind the scenes insights into his Elvis Presley documentary as well as the work he has done for Bruce Springsteen.
Zimny will screen segments from the recently released documentary, punctuated by commentary and analysis from the filmmaker himself. The clips showed will be specially selected from the two-part, four-hour documentary, chosen as especially illustrative.
Previously, Zimny worked closely with Bruce Springsteen as the director of several documentaries about the legendary rocker and as his chief videographer. According to Forbes: "Few people understand Springsteen's creative process better than filmmaker Thom Zimny." Springsteen himself summed up Zimny's mastery of his craft simply, writing to him, "You and your crew bring it all."
'Elvis Presley: The Searcher' took a nuanced look at a man who is often cast by tabloids in derogatory terms and instead carefully investigated his meticulously collecting old footage, recordings, and interviews with friends and family to create a more complete picture of Elvis Presley.

According to The New York Times, Zimny's documentary "shows Presley's passion and control, his visceral drama, his mastery."
The screening will be held in the Ridgefield Playhouse and hosted by the Ridgefield Independent Film Festival.

Elvis Auction May 19 - includes $100.000 diamond ring: Julien's Auctions feature lots of ELVIS in their May 19 MUSIC ICONS live auction at Hard Rock Cafe New York and online.
The auction includes a diamond star-shaped ring (estimate $100,000) given by Elvis to 20-year-old fan Donna Lewis who was stood in the front row at the gig in 1975.
Also featuring Elvis' guitar a 1968 prototype solid rosewood Fender Telecaster electric guitar made for Elvis by Fender Custom Shop (estimate: $100,000).

Not Elvis but a standout artifact that changed the course of music history is Bob Dylan's handwritten lyrics written on St. Regis New York hotel stationery of Bob Dylan's 1963 classic "Blowin' in the Wind," joins the auction set list; this original Dylan manuscript is estimated to sell between $50,000-$70,000.
The auction takes place on May 19.

A diamond star-shaped ring given by Elvis Presley to a concert-goer Donna Lewis on July 24, 1975, during a performance at the Civic Center in Asheville, North Carolina.
The ring is designed in 14K white gold, topped with 50 full-cut round diamonds totaling approximately 6.00 cts. and graded H-I color and VS-SI clarity, size 7 1/2. 25.4 grams.
Accompanying the ring is a photograph of Lewis and Presley at the moment he gave her the ring; an image of Presley wearing the ring; an affidavit from Lewis; and two images of Presley with a thank-you card given to him at a concert on March 18, 1976, in Johnson City, Tennessee.

The Beatles and J. Cole. The Beatles held the record for 54 years, as they charted six songs in the top 20 on charts dated April 11 and April 18, 1964.
J. Cole tied the mark just last week (on the chart dated May 5), fuelled by the No. 1 Billboard 200 bow of his latest album, KOD.
In a rather neat twist Post Malone then surprised a Nashville Bar with a cover of Elvis' 'That's All Right' - so he can't be all that bad!
Malone also has a tattoo of Elvis on his wedding ring finger!

Tupelo Elvis Festival honoured: The Tupelo Elvis Presley festival gets another award from 'Southern Traveler' magazine who named the Tupelo Elvis Festival as a "Southern Travel Treasure."
That award comes as Elvis' hometown is about to celebrate 20 years of the Tupelo Elvis Festival.
One of the highlights of the festival is the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist competition, which draws many people to the city and the festival.
"There's several other amazing competitions going on throughout the United States, but there is only one birthplace. So having that connection to Elvis does make it that much more personal. The 20th Elvis festival is going to be fantastic. We are really hoping not to just get that international crowd, but more of our local crowd too." said Reagan Pepper, with the Tupelo Elvis Presley Festival.
The Tupelo Elvis Festival runs June 6th through the 10th.

SONY / Sirius Radio Pre-1972 Legal fight: Nearly three years after major record labels reached a $210 million settlement with SiriusXM over the use of sound recordings created before 1972, a new legal fight has erupted over the licensing of classic songs by such artists as Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and Simon & Garfunkel.
The 2015 settlement by SiriusXM with ABKCO Music & Records, Sony Music Entertainment, etc came upon the sudden realization by many that pre-1972 recordings had the potential to be a monster legal headache for radio operators, bars, restaurants, sports stadiums and others. That's because when Congress chose to bring sound recordings within the purview of the Copyright Act in the mid-1970s, lawmakers chose not to preempt state misappropriation laws for older works. Despite decades of no litigation on this front, record owners began testing big lawsuits against SiriusXM and Pandora for exploiting iconic recordings from the rock and jazz era.
Then, the situation seemingly cooled.

Not only did the major labels strike a $210 million settlement with SiriusXM, but independent owners of pre-1972 sound recordings came to their own settlement worth up to $99 million. The latter deal to resolve a class action led by Flo & Eddie of The Turtles nevertheless allowed appeals to proceed that would shape ongoing royalty rates, and subsequently, SiriusXM won big rulings when courts in both New York and Florida decided that their state laws didn't protect the public performance of pre-1972 sound recordings.
The 2015 settlement deal gave the satellite radio broadcaster the right to use pre-1972 recordings through the end of last year, and as contemplated by the settlement, the parties would try to reach a new license for 2018-2022. If the parties couldn't come to terms, they would arbitrate.
As revealed in court papers filed by Sony on Friday, SiriusXM and the record labels have exchanged proposals but haven't been able to come to an agreement.
Pursuant to the Flo & Eddie agreement, SiriusXM is currently paying 2 percent, and if the California Supreme Court finds that state law hasn't granted pre-1972 recording owners a performance right, the royalty gets adjusted down to nothing.
Of course, Sony is likely to think its recordings - including Elvis Presley, Miles Davis and Johnny Cash - are a lot more valuable and deserve much greater compensation. Before Sirius prevailed in New York and Florida courts, SiriusXM had agreed in settlements to pay as much as a 5.5 percent royalty.

Elvis Badges/ Buttons including everything from ‘I Like Elvis’ to ‘I Hate Elvis’ buttons, and featured over 18 pages of the book, is just one of those 80 products! It is an intense and fascinating story.
Teenagers in the 1950s were the first generation to really have any spending money and Tom Parker wanted to grab his share!

MRS ‘Complete 50s Film & Soundtrack Sessions digital erratum! Author Gordon Minto who wrote the very detailed text for the new MRS release ‘Complete 50s Film & Soundtrack Sessions' would like to point out an editing mistake that made in through to the final manuscript.
Minto would like to acknowledge the simple error before the 'Elvis Fun Police' want him castigated.
On page 54 the sentence is inadvertently printed as "Love Me Tender after earning millions ...ironically was the only film Elvis made for 20th Century Fox."
The sentence was of course meant to have said "Love Me Tender after earning millions ...ironically was the only film Elvis made for 20th Century Fox in the fifties".
Two pages later Minto actually notes in the bok that Elvis did make two more films for 20th Century Fox.
Minto tells EIN "I have never shied away from admitting my mistakes which is why I wanted to get it out there as soon as the book is officially released. It would be a sort of digital erratum!"

(New book) Spirit of the '60s: A Film and Television Photo Album: Elvis, Batman, Doctor Who, Gerry Anderson, Irwin Allen (a fun 4 fans history): In 2014-15 EIN had the pleasure of interviewing pop culture and prolific author Jon Abbott and reviewing his excellent book, The Elvis Films. Jon has a new book release featuring a chapter on Elvis that will be of interest to many fans. Jon told EIN:
"I thought I would drop a quick line to notify you about a new publication of mine that includes a nod to Elvis.
It is different from my usual text-heavy books in that it is primarily a photo album, in colour, around 140 pages, with the theme of 1960s film and TV. Basically I was looking for a way to use some wonderful Batman and Doctor Who pics that came my way and I needed a general theme that justified the use of the pictures for their intended purpose (promotion), so I put together this book titled Spirit of the ’60s that features specific chapters (including Elvis, Gerry Anderson, and Irwin Allen) that make up a visual history to hopefully encourage further investigation by the young and a nudge to re-watch for the nostalgic.

Actor Bruce Campbell quits Elvis: Following the recent cancellation of 'Ash vs Evil Dead' the show’s star Bruce Campbell announced that he would also officially retire from his role as Elvis Aaron Presley.
Campbell played an aged version of Presley, or at least someone who believed himself to be the King of Rock & Roll , in director Don Coscarelli’s much-loved 2002 cult horror film 'Bubba Ho-Tep' which was based on a novella by Joe R. Lansdale. A few years later Campbell came close to reprising the role in a proposed sequel called 'Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires' before reportedly withdrawing from the project. “I told the creators that I didn’t want to dance around it anymore. I feel that the first 'Bubba Ho-Tep' was a nice little gem, and you don’t have to make a sequel for everything. Don Coscarelli, god bless him, go make it. You know, get somebody else. They had Ron Perlman at one point. Knock yourself out.
To me, each character has a lifespan. Elvis was best as a one-shot deal, an iconic character in a really unique setting, guided by a great director. Why repeat?”

Elvis ‘spotted ALIVE singing in church’!: OK, this is pure tabloid BS but the fact that people even consider that Elvis might not be dead in 2018 only goes to show the media fascination over Elvis is bigger than any other superstar.
The UK tabloids report that ... the internet has erupted with claims the King of Rock is alive and doing what he did best – singing.
Hardcore (EIN- Really?!) fans are convinced a pastor seen singing gospels in a deep baritone voice is Elvis Presley himself.
Fans are now calling on pastor Robert Joyce from a small town in central Arkansas to identify himself and admit to being the rock icon.
If some of the conspiracists are to believed, Elvis has chosen a life of worship and now preaches in a small town in central Arkansas.

Tom Mennel, who has seen Pastor Bob singing on YouTube, is convinced he is the real deal.
He said: “I have been an Elvis fan since I was six-years-old and now I am 61-years-old. To me Mr Joyce is Elvis and I do hope one day he will stand up and say who he is.
My aunt has seen Elvis when she lived in Memphis and she says that is him. She’s been to five of his concerts and she says that is him.”

Another person Sophi Mour, added: “Absolutely the face, body and voice is you. The way you move your hands, your walking, your humour and your smile is definitely the King.
I’m studying his everyday videos all the time and I’m sure of that with all my heart."
However, unfortunately for fans, the claims have been debunked by Mr Joyce himself.
Thanking people for the comparisons he dispelled the rumours and added: “Most of these folks know I am not Elvis but to them it doesn’t matter. They are only so grateful that God is blessing them and reviewing their lives. Perhaps God is using Elvis voice to minister to broken hearts and broken lives.
If Elvis were alive, I would say to him, my friend and brother, we are of kindred spirits. We are one in Christ.”
Over the years conspiracy theorists have refused to believe that Elvis died and claim he faked his own death to avoid the spotlight and live out a peaceful retirement.
However the iconic singer would now be over 83-years-old if he is alive.

Petition to NBC to Honour the Comeback Special 50th Anniversary: This is a neat idea by Elvis fan Dave Rogers who has started a change.org petition to NBC request that Elvis' classic 'Comeback Special' be shown on the 50th anniversary of the NBC premiere.
"On December 3, 1968, NBC aired what has since become known as Elvis Presley's '68 Comeback Special which was not only the most watched TV special that year, but also the catalyst for a rebirth in Elvis' career and the motivating factor in his decision to return to performing in front of live audiences again after several years of making movies in Hollywood.

Marty Stuart at Graceland & new Hillbilly Exhibit: Graceland has announced that five time GRAMMY Award winning country superstar and Grand Ole Opry member Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives will bring his eclectic blend of rockabilly, honky-tonk, and traditional country music to The Guest House at Graceland Theater on June 9 for an electrifying, one-night only, concert.
Marty and his band will be joined by legendary Sun Records drummer W.S. Holland.
At 2pm on June 9, Stuart will participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new exhibit filled with artifacts from Stuart’s personal collection that traces the country music roots of rock ‘n’ roll.

'Saturday Night Fever' New Import CD: The Ragdoll label latest release is ''Saturday Night Fever' from March 30th 1975 dinner show AUDIENCE RECORDING. (EIN notes it was a Sunday, not Saturday!)
In march of 1975 Elvis gave 29 performances, he opened this season on March 18, 1975, and the crowd at the Las Vegas Hilton saw a rejuvenated performer, as well as a rejuvenated setlist.
Elvis added tracks from his new album 'Elvis Today', songs like ''Green Green Grass Of Home'' ''And I Love You So'' and ''Fairytale'' would be introduced, with the latter two staying in the setlist for most of those shows. Elvis also re-introduced some songs that haven't been sung regularly for 2 years, including ''My Boy'' ''Burning Love'' and ''I'll Remember You'', the latter one having been sung only once the year before in Lake Tahoe. Here for the first time, the near complete March 30th dinner show. Ragdoll was able to obtain a new source, which included the near complete show (the tape ran out near the end of ''Hound Dog'') which was in very good sound quality. The sound is ambient and very good, the only song left incomplete is ''Can't Help Falling In Love''. Be sure to ask your dealer for samples.

'The Searcher' Separates the Trailblazer From His Tragedy: The New York Times has published a substantial and very positive review of the new HBO documentary.
It includes..
... There are no fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Nor is there a television with a bullet hole in its screen. Drugs, an unavoidable topic, are mentioned in sympathetic tones as an overworked performer's self-medication.
"Elvis Presley: The Searcher" strives to rescue the Elvis Presley story from its tabloid side. Instead, it presents a biography of an artist and musician who was both spectacularly gifted and unconscionably misdirected. Guided by his own ideas and instincts, he transformed 20th-century culture in the 1950s. But afterward, treated by his manager as a commercial workhorse, he spent years making trivial movies and performing as a nostalgia act.
The documentary presents Presley's relationship to African-American music as one of affinity and appreciation, not exploitation. "Elvis and Elvis's music pointed to black culture and said, 'This is filled with the force of life,'" Mr. Springsteen comments. "If you want to be an American, this is something you need to pay attention to." The excerpt chosen from "King Creole," the 1958 Presley film set in New Orleans, shows Presley listening to and then joining African-American street vendors' cries, acknowledging their influence.
"He did not invent rock 'n' roll per se," Tom Petty bluntly notes, citing Little Richard and Joe Turner. "What he did was different" a fusion of all Presley had absorbed. He was not a copyist. There was no other career map at the time, and the Colonel did not encourage artistic exploration. Through the eventful mid-1960s Elvis was contractually bound to make movies with lame songs and diminishing returns. One of the documentary's most bitterly telling finds is an audio interview with a defeated-sounding Presley, where he says that while he'd like to make "artistic" films, "if what you're doing is doing O.K., you're better off sticking with it."

Graceland Expansion Proposal: The plans for the Graceland campus expansion shows two exhibit buildings of 80,000 square feet each on either side of the "live Event Center" EPE wants to build on the western border behind its Elvis Presley's Memphis entertainment complex.
The plan and rendering released last Monday by Graceland managing partner Joel Weinshanker, also includes:
* A "Made in USA Outlet" building of more than 64,000 square feet directly across the boulevard from the Guest House at Graceland.
* An aircraft hangar for the two restored jets owned by Elvis Presley.
* A new wing for the Guest House.
Weinshanker also touts 1,000 new jobs to be created by the expansion.
Graceland is now seeking financing for both the arena and exhibit space with approval earlier this month from the Economic Development Growth Engine, the city-county agency that approves economic incentives for such projects.

The EDGE board approved a plan that would specifically increase the flow of city and county property tax revenue through a tax increment financing district, or TIF, to the financing of the Guest House at Graceland and Elvis Presley's Memphis. Graceland would then use the money it now puts toward financing those two projects toward the financing of a 6,000- to 7,000-seat arena estimated to cost $50 million.
Graceland's new legal position is that the OK'd arrangement means it can build the arena and not violate the non-compete agreement the Memphis Grizzlies.
City chief legal officer Bruce McMullen also said he had hoped Graceland and the Grizzlies could work out some agreement without the matter being decided in court.

Elvis 'Heartbreak Hotel' musical in Chicago: Elvis will soon enter the building when the musical "Heartbreak Hotel" begins its 10-week Chicago run June 30.
The jukebox musical, which traces the first 18 months of Presley's career, from his days as a teen-aged truck driver to his arrival at Sun Studios in Memphis to his life-changing affiliation with Col. Tom Parker and his ascent to superstardom, is the work of writer/director Floyd Mutrux, who, along with Colin Escott, also penned "Million Dollar Quartet'.
'Heartbreak Hotel' will star Eddie Clendening as Elvis (also in "Million Dollar Quartet"), Matt Codina as guitarist Scotty Moore and Beau Sample as bassist Bill Black.

was a big part of that," said Clendening. "But ya, I used to get beat up in school for wearing a pompadour and '50s-style clothes, playing a guitar."

"I think in part his style came from the people who influenced him ... like Chet Atkins" Codina said. "Scotty had that distinct approach to it."
"That heavy, syncopated thumb that added so much to the backbeat. Nobody really had that style until him," Clendening added.

Lisa Marie's Ex-Manager Demands Court Dismiss Lawsuit: Lisa Marie Presley's former business manager claims she squandered millions of dollars of her famous father's fortune, and is asking the court to dismiss her shocking claims against him.
In court documents Barry J. Siegel's attorney said Lisa Marie is blaming Siegel for her uncontrollable spending. The affidavit is a response to Presley's petition filed in Los Angeles Probate Court that alleges her ex-business manager lost her $100 million fortune by investing in American Idol, and left her in $500,000 in credit card debt.
Elvis Presley's daughter accused Siegel of "reckless and negligent mismanagement and self-serving ambition," in court documents filed in February 21 and is suing Siegel for "breach of trust, breach of fiduciary duty, negligence, constructive fraud negligence, negligent misrepresentation, unjust enrichment and accounting."
Siegel's attorney, Leon Gladstone, said Presley's motion should not be discussed in probate proceedings, but instead belongs in civil court.
"Presley concedes that, in retrospect, she could and should have 'enjoyed a luxurious lifestyle' and lived 'comfortably' on the $1.5 to $2 million she received annually from 2005 forward," Gladstone wrote in the affidavit. "While the untouched $40 million could have grown as much as $75 million. |

In other words, the 2007 transaction effectively set Lisa Marie up to receive a steady, substantial stream of income while she secured a fortune in the tens of millions of dollars- if only she had kept her hands off the $40 million."
The attorney added the bulk of Presley's allegations are contradictory.
Meanwhile, Lisa Marie is due in court this Friday for a hearing on her ongoing divorce battle with ex Michael Lockwood, who is demanding financial support from her.

.. There have been movies about Elvis Presley before, but there’s never been a definitive take on the “King of Rock 'n’ Roll.” Johnny Cash has 'Walk The Line', Ray Charles has 'Ray', but where’s the great Presley biopic?
'Elvis: The Searcher' is a more sensible way to cover Presley’s life and career than a traditional narrative film. Rather than picking over the many details of who he was and what he did for the thousandth time and trying to squeeze a single story out of it, it condenses everything, approaching Presley in a scholarly but streamlined way.
The Searcher comes on the heels of several other HBO docs about American cultural icons, including Arthur Miller: Writer, The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling, and Andre the Giant.
And yet, unlike any of the other men HBO has profiled recently, Presley holds a certain cultural cache which only a few artists and entertainers from the last century ever achieved. If anything, he remains seen, if not heard.

The popularity of his music may be up for debate, but his status as a staple of Americana remains unchecked. Ask any kid who Presley was, and even if they can’t name one of his songs, they can tell you what he looked like.
It’s the very reason we keep waiting for that great biopic about him, ELVIS is too big. No actor has ever adequately been able to fill the King’s blue suede shoes.
So, yeah, The Searcher had a lot to cover. The film pays special attention his 1968 TV special, using it as a framing device and suggesting that was the moment which forever cemented his legacy as a pioneering television performer.
The sheer amount of audio Zimny collected, and how much time he spent collecting it, must be staggering, especially given the haunting snippets featuring the now-deceased Petty.

What 'The Searcher' covers exhaustingly is Presley’s music. If you’re someone who appreciates discussions of craft, about how the twang of a guitar, the slap of a bass, or the beat of a drum can change a whole culture, then there’s a lot here you’ll love.
There’s not a lot of recontextualization going on in The Searcher. The film is full of facts, but none of them are showcased in a new light. -

‘Elvis: The Searcher’ In UK Charts: There is no doubt that without the HBO documentary ‘Elvis Presley: The Searcher' being shown on TV there is little reason for fans outside the US to get excited about the new CD release. The tracklisting makes little sense unless you have seen the film - as Zimny has stated, "The soundtrack was in my mind from the beginning. The collection of recordings is for a person who saw the film, who wanted to complete the experience. To me, this collection is part of the film."
Unfortunately that lack of TV promotion has caused ‘Elvis: The Searcher’ to already drop out of the UK Top 100 Album Chart.

Classic Vancouver 1957 Elvis Photos Found: Elvis' show at the Vancouver Empire Stadium on August 31, 1957 is the stuff of legend, but photos of the gig are as rare as hen’s teeth.
So imagine Rob Frith’s surprise when he recently got a call about some unknown Elvis pix from Empire Stadium.
Frith admits he was “a bit skeptical” about new photos turning up six decades after the show. But he was astonished when he saw them in person.
The photo captures the early Elvis in all his rock ’n’ roll glory, knees bent and wide apart, singin’ and swingin’ in his famous gold lame jacket.
“I was excited I had to have them,” laughs Frith, one of Canada’s top rock poster collectors.
Frith wound up purchasing 14 prints from Andrew Bazan, whose dad Anthony took the shots. Anthony Bazan worked as a portrait photographer, and talked his way into the Presley show by claiming to be a member of the press.
One photo features Elvis with his backing singers the Jordonaires, the rest are solo shots of Elvis in various states of gyration. They’ve never been published, which is hard to believe, because they totally capture his onstage magic.
The show only lasted 22 minutes before some fans rushed the stage and Elvis vamoosed. But it sounds like the King was in full control onstage.
“At one point Dad was about to take a photograph when Elvis turned away,” Andrew Bazan noted, “Elvis realized the situation, turned, faced Dad, smiled and waited for him to take the photo, all while still performing the song.”
The black and white prints are small, four by six inches. The negatives were lost in a fire years ago, but the Bazans kept the prints in pristine condition.
Anthony Bazan died about 10 years ago, and his son inherited the photos.

“I felt the photos belonged in Vancouver, in a good home, hopefully to be enjoyed as I had enjoyed them over the years,” he said.
Most of the existing shots from the gig were by Rolly Ford, who made prints for DJ Red Robinson, who was the MC of the show.
Robinson chuckles when asked about a rumour that Elvis was wearing black pants in the Vancouver show because his gold lame pants were at the drycleaners.
“Elvis tried to wear that gold suit onstage, but with his movement and everything else it cracked,” he said.
“He said ‘I don’t want to wear this (bleep) anymore,’ and took off the bottom and left the top on. It was gold lame, and just split apart.”

The Sun sent photographer Bill Dennett to the Presley show, and apparently he took some marvellous shots. But when the crowd rushed the stage, editors decided to run a Ralph Bower photo of the crowd instead of Elvis, which infuriated Dennett.
“He went backstage and did a whole bunch of portrait shots of Elvis with his hand up, with his wristwatch, beautiful shots,” Bower recalls.
Unfortunately the Dennett photos have disappeared from the Sun’s archives, and have never been seen by the public.
Frith can’t believe the Sun didn’t run any Elvis shots from his show, which drew a record crowd of 25,898.

“It was one of the biggest cultural events in the history of the world — Elvis Presley was a big deal!” said Frith.
“How could they not run that? Why wouldn’t you? Do you not want to sell newspapers?”

'Elvis: Murfreesboro '74'' FTD In-Depth Review: March 1974 was Elvis' ninth tour of the US and included twenty-five performances in under 3 weeks. Freed from the constraints of the Las Vegas Hilton casino crowd, Elvis was in fine form and putting on great shows. "Depressed Elvis killed himself" Tabloid Lies!: This week several bottom-scraping media sites and newspapers have been reporting that "Priscilla says 'Depressed Elvis killed himself'". THIS IS TOTAL RUBBISH.
The story was fabricated by a low-life UK tabloid and since then has been copied to other media sites. The supposed source is a Priscilla quote in the new documentary 'The Searcher'. While in the HBO doco Priscilla does claim that "she and loved ones had failed to try and wean Elvis off (prescribed) drugs" and that Elvis always stated that he knew what he was doing. There is no suggestion of suicide.
While EIN has suggested that Priscilla has created "false-memories" previously to help promote new EPE products, i.e. "Elvis said he wanted to build The Guest House At Graceland" or "Elvis always wanted to record with the RPO", this time we believe this is all tabloid fabricated lies.
In fact Priscilla has now commented on the story..
"I never said Elvis was depressed and killed himself. My words "he knew what he was doing" were totally taken out of context.
This story originated from a UK tabloid. They credited 'The Searcher' as the source of this fabricated story.

Largest Elvis Week Ever Expected at Graceland, Memphis, August 9-18: Fans from around the world will gather at Graceland® in Memphis to celebrate and honor the life of Elvis Presley™ during Elvis Week™ 2018 – which will be the biggest Elvis Week in history. Unprecedented concerts, special performances and guest appearances will take place from August 9 through 18 at Graceland’s new entertainment complex, Elvis Presley’s Memphis.

Elvis' RIAA "Certified" Album Sales More Than 146.5 Million: SONY / Legacy and RCA Records acknowledge the astounding ongoing impact of the music and artistry of Elvis Presley, whose all time RIAA certified album awards in the US now top 146.5 million units. (perhaps more says EIN!)
As Presley's catalog achieves new Gold, Platinum and multi-Platinum sales awards as certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Elvis continues to inspire, inform and transform popular culture.
Elvis, the second most awarded solo performer and third most awarded act in RIAA history (after the Beatles at #1 and Garth Brooks at #2) has racked up more Gold Records (101) than any other act and is the only artist still earning RIAA certifications whose connection to the association dates back to its founding.

In 1958, the inaugural year of the RIAA Gold & Platinum program, Elvis' "Hard Headed Woman" became one of the RIAA's first three Gold singles and the very first in Elvis' ongoing string of Gold, Platinum and multi-Platinum certifications.
Over the past year, 17 Elvis Presley catalog titles have been awarded RIAA certifications, with 11 of those albums reaching Gold (or Platinum) status for the very first time.
HOWEVER there has always been a discrepancy over RIAA's total sales measurements..
- The basis for RIAA’s overall artist announcements totally exclude singles - of which Elvis is the true king.
- The RIAA certifications are based on documented sales figures but in the case of Elvis the RCA figures are incomplete, most importantly sales during the 12 months after Elvis' death are unaccounted for. BILLBOARD wrote in September 1977 that RCA shipped 20 million records a week. They had as many as 40 pressing plants working overtime to cope with the demand. RCA November releas
- Figures are based on "certified" albums sales, but this becomes VERY interesting because neither The Beatles nor Garth Brooks have any albums that have not been certified, Elvis however has more than 200 non-certified albums which combined sales would also have been yet more millions.

‘THE ELVIS CONCERT 2018’ European Tour Dates: Arjan Deelen's very fine concert event "An Evening with Elvis' Friends and Original Musicians" this year returns as the easier titled ‘THE ELVIS CONCERT 2018’.
The special show will be returning this spring for a 25-date tour of Finland, Holland, Belgium and Sweden.
We will be bringing Elvis’ 1970 drummer BOB LANNING (‘The Wonder Of You’, ‘Polk Salad Annie’, etc) as well as original Imperials member JIM MURRAY, who can be seen in the 1970 movie 'Elvis – That’s The Way It Is'. At each of the shows, there is a meet & greet where you can say hello to the musicians.

Elvis Week 'Garden Party' at Denmark's Memphis Mansion: Henrik Knudsen is planning a special Elvis Extravaganza for Elvis Week 2018.
For three days August 17-19 European Elvis fans can enjoy the delights of Elvis' friends, acquaintances and musicians without the trouble of flying to Memphis.
This will take place at the "Danish version of Graceland" the Randers Memphis Mansion.

'Elvis: The Bicentennial Show' 1976' FTD In-Depth Review: 1976 is not an easy Elvis live-in-concert year to review. There were no major set-list changes, no dramatic "emotional roller-coaster" of 1974 and no high-flying "Huntsville" 1975 excitements. Apart from the exceptional blast of the final December 1976 Tour the year was the inevitable downward spiral.
However there were some highlights along the way and Elvis collectors have always been keen to hear Elvis' July 4th 1976 Bicentennial performance, as well as RCA's Joan Deary's initial choice for the 1980 box-set of Duluth, October 16, 1976.

It includes the premiere of the complete rehearsal recorded in Buffalo, NY on April 5, 1972, with three previously unreleased performances.

FTD will NOT end in 2019: A fair number of uninformed supposed Elvis "insiders" (even some Fan Club Presidents) have been publishing fictional stories that the FTD label is planning to close in 2019.
Ernst Jorgensen had strongly denied this story stating, that FTD has plans to continue for the foreseeable future.
In an interesting interview about 'The Future of FTD' - with Trevor Cajiao in the recent ETM&HM magazine - Ernst Jorgensen's main points were....
1. FTD will not be closing in 2019
2. The 'Classic Albums" series is nearly complete but there are more to come, noting 'Aloha' and 'Madison Square Garden' are still to be done.
3. Expanded "complete session tapes" releases are being considered
4. Plenty more soundboards to come

UPDATED - Trying To Get To You: The Truth Behind The Elvis And Roy Orbison Show Rumours: For decades there has always been an unsubstantiated rumour that Elvis Presley appeared as a guest on Roy Orbison's TV show on the local station KOSA.
The Roy Orbison website notes that both Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley performed on Roy’s TV show in late 1955.
Respected author Colin Escott wrote in his book Good Rockin’ Tonight about a kinescope of Elvis on the Roy Orbison TV show actually existing.
Some keen Elvis fans have said that they have seen this very kinescope at Elvis Week shows back in the 80s.
But like infamous Pied Piper of Cleveland does this footage really exist and is there any real proof that Elvis did appear on the Roy Orbison TV show?
Shane Brown (author of Reconsider Baby: Elvis: A Listener's Guide) has done an immense amount of investigation and thinks he has found the answer.

"The Wonder Of You" 2018 Australia Tour changes: The "Back By Popular Demand" 2018 'Wonder Of You' Australian tour has been majorly altered by the local producers RCM Touring. They are no longer in April 2018 as planned and the locally-anticipated show in the new venue of Newcastle, NSW has been cancelled completely.
Now there are only the two shows in Sydney and Melbourne and the dates have been moved to August 2018, presumably to help link up with the excitement of Elvis Week.
Elvis will beam down from 'state of the art' video screens to give fans the closest possible experience to seeing The King "ELVIS" perform live.

Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware) - Exposing the Amazon Elvis Book Rip-Off?: From RCA to Sony Elvis' back catalog has long been exploited at the expense of his legacy. The same thing is now happening regarding Elvis book releases!
Through clever marketing, including the use of different (but suspicious) author names and different book titles for releases which are essentially identical; short and long book editions; and coupling the Elvis story with that of other celebrities, a glut of Elvis related book titles (with repetitive text) only available from Amazon are blatantly misleading fans.

‘ELVIS: Studio Sessions 1956' In-Depth Review: MRS newest release, a massive 3CD/172 page book compilation "Elvis Studio Sessions ‘56 The Complete Recordings". The 172-page book, with text by Gordon Minto, focuses on each of Elvis’ studio recording sessions during his first year of national stardom - from the first one in January, held in Nashville, then later in New York, before finishing his final session of the year in Hollywood in September. 'Roustabout' FTD Soundtrack Review: Roustabout was Elvis' 16th movie, it had been five months since Elvis’ last album session and his publishers had a chance to secure soundtrack material from a variety of composers. Eleven songs were needed and while the carnival theme stopped most of them having any inspired lyrics, at least the composers Leiber / Stoller and Otis Blackwell were included in the selection.
Reaching #1 on Billboard in early 1965, it would Elvis’ last chart topping album until "Aloha From Elvis Via Satellite" in 1973.
53 years after its original release FTD is pleased to announce the long awaited "Classic Album" version of "Roustabout". Packaged in 7" format with a full colour 16-page memorabilia booklet, it contains some previously unreleased material.
So why has it taken FTD so long to release? It was once noted that only the masters had been located in the vaults, so there was not much to include for a “Classic Album”...

Mindi Miller Interview with EIN: Mindi Miller was a working actress when she met Elvis in early 1975. She was interested in karate (she performed all her own movie stunts), exploring spirituality and the Bible and so they had a lot in common.
Mindi Miller and Elvis bonded over their common interests and soon afterwards he asked her to go on tour with him in April 1975.
She stayed friends with Elvis through the years - along with members of the 'Memphis Mafia' - and attended his funeral.

'Platinum: A Life In Music' Re-Release OUT NOW: Sony UK has re-released the classic 4-Cd set 'Platinum: A Life In Music'- in a small-book format twenty years after its first release in 1997.
The set chronicles the outstanding career of Elvis Presley (1954 to 1977) from a unique perspective and it includes 100 performances, 77 of which were previously unreleased in 1997. This historic overview traces his development as an artist and emphasizes how Elvis' music always returned to its unshakable core values. This 4-CD box set contains a 48-page book and consists mostly of previously unreleased alternate takes of Elvis Presley's hits.
There is no info on whether this 20th anniversary release includes audio upgrades of all the "77 were previously unreleased takes" which have since been remastered.

'Marty Lacker: A Life Well-Lived' & Elvis at American Studio's Interview: It was with immense sadness that last month EIN had to report on the death of our great friend - and a true friend to Elvis - Marty Lacker. We will miss him dearly.
Marty is well-known as one of the key members of the Memphis Mafia and also co-Best Man at Elvis' wedding. He was known for both his honesty and being forthright with his opinions. He was the only member of the Memphis Mafia who still watched and commented on recent Elvis News. He had no issue with holding people to account (especially ones who would inflate their importance within Elvis' legacy) and would regularly ask EIN to add his comments or to correct any inaccuracy.
Elvis fans often ask about Marty Lacker's background, how he came to meet Elvis, as well as his involvement in the music industry outside of working for The King.

UPDATED - 'Way Down In The Jungle Room' EIN Review: Released for August 2016 this SONY Legacy pack celebrates the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ last recording sessions which took place in Graceland’s Jungle Room.
The publicity noted the sessions “have been newly mixed by Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording” and “includes both outtakes and in-the-studio dialog, providing a ‘fly-on-the-wall experience’ of what the sessions were like".
Elvis' original 76/77 albums were fairly uninspired collections (bar a few fine singles) and on the original LPs it was almost impossible to glimpse any sign of creative input from Elvis through the syrupy overdubs. It wasn't until the release of FTD’s magnificent ‘The Jungle Room Sessions’ that many fans began to understand the raw emotion, close camaraderie and Elvis’ personal feelings that were revealed by these intimate Graceland sessions.
To produce that same kind of revelation for the 'General Public' would be a very tricky project but that is exactly what the new legacy team has done - and to great effect.

Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage!
The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
