Paul McCartney Visits Graceland: Paul McCartney makes first ever visit to Presley's grave and leaves his guitar pick
According to the official Twitter account of the former Beatle, McCartney said the pick was 'so Elvis can play in heaven'.
The lifelong Elvis fan toured Graceland mansion on Sunday.
McCartney was in Memphis to play a show on the North American leg of his 'Out There' tour, which has seen him perform in Brazil, Poland, Italy and Austria before drawing to a close in Seattle in July.
Elvis and The Beatles actually met in 1965 in LA at Elvis' house after a music journalist with links to both the Beatles and Elvis organised it. When the Fab Four were ushered before The King they were so overawed that at first none of them could think of anything to say.
It was Elvis who broke the ice. ‘Well, if you guys are just gonna sit there and stare at me all night, I’m going to bed,’ he said, before calling for guitars to be passed around for a jam session.
Elvis was a huge influence on both McCartney and John Lennon. The emergence of Elvis’s first British single Heartbreak Hotel in 1956 had led the schoolboy Lennon to form his own group, the Quarrymen.

Virtual Elvis may appear 'live on stage': More on the sale of EPE .. The group Core Media group are looking for 180million-dollar deal for EPE plus rights to Elvis image and which could see The King appear "live" on stage more than 35 years after he died.
Media analyst Mike Raia notes that this could be one of the sweetest deals for a prospective buyer in the history of entertainment and sportsacquisitions.
Raia said that Elvis is still worth as much as 70million a year in revenue, mainly through the 550,000-plus tourists, who visit Graceland annually. Raia said that the opportunities for a serious buyer could be enormous, as there are already detailed plans for an Elvis-themed hotel near Graceland.
"Other future revenue sources include a tribute stage show in an Asian casino hub such as Macau and a massive expansion of Elvis-themed digital and social media projects," the media analyst said. |

Jack Soden, chief executive of EPE, which was bought by Core from the Presley family for about 66million dollars in 2004, believes that the virtual technology could even lead to Presley going on tour again, at least in the shape of his digital image.
This could probably mean fans can once again watch a young and lean Presley "perform" around the world.
Members of the Presley family, led by his daughter Lisa Marie, 45, will retain their 15 per cent shareholding as a condition of the sale, irrespective of the buyer. (see more news about this EPE sale below)

Marshall Chapman and Elvis: Marshall Chapman is a life-long Rocker, measuring time by Elvis. When Scotty Moore, Elvis Presley's former guitar player, tells you check out the music of Marshall Chapman, maybe you should give it a listen. Moore is just one of many to sing Chapman's praises, but it's especially fitting that a member of the King's entourage should endorse her. Lord and Lady Montagu get All Shook Up: It is Lord and Lady Montagu as you have never seen them before. The Hampshire peer and his wife put on their Blue Suede Shoes and saluted the King of Rock ’n’ Roll.
Lady Montagu threw an Elvis Presley party at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, to celebrate her 70th birthday year.
Surrounded by Elvis look-alikes, Lady Montagu was dressed in a white rhinestone-encrusted jumpsuit by her Budapest-based designer Kati Zoob.
Lord Montagu, 86, was also wearing an Elvis cape.
Lady Montagu says she came to “adore” Elvis in her early thirties after watching a film of him performing in Las Vegas.
A spokesman said: “All her guests entered into the spirit of the occasion and we had a great spectrum of Elvis Presleys, including Teddy Boys and US Army members.
“Guests were served Elvis’s favourite food – peanut and jelly canopes and meatloaf and hot dogs, washed down with his favourite drink, Pepsi Cola. Lady Montagu spent more than a year planning the event.
She said: “I’m a great Elvis fan. I was in the car, singing along to Blue Suede Shoes on the stereo, and I thought ‘That’s it, I’ll have an Elvis party’.”

New Elvis Recording!? - Not True: It's not so rare to run into someone with a vast Elvis Presley memorabilia collection.But what is rare is getting collectibles directly from Elvis himself while spending time in gym class together.
Frank Frasier isn't paranoid. Maybe it's just a suspicious mind. "I keep it in a safety deposit box," he said.
Because the contents of the black brief case are pretty special. And won't keep it in his Nassau County home.
Frasier was born in Memphis, Tenn., and he went to grade school at Humes, a few years younger than the king of rock and roll.
"7th grade ... Elvis was a senior then, of course he didn't look like Elvis then, rough face," Frasier said.
The two became friends in intramural gym class where Elvis was all-time quarterback in touch football.
So time goes by and Elvis Presley becomes Elvis. And in 1957, Frasier then paid a visit to his old high school buddy at Graceland. |

"I said 'can I have a few pictures?' He said 'yeah, go ahead.'"
Frasier snapped a shot of a 22-year-old King.
"I took this pic myself with a little browing hawkeye camera."
It's locked in his briefcase along with other collectibles from the king.
But he's most proud of a rough recording of Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis, taken at a radio station in the late '50s.
A DJ friend gave it to him.
"Some people want to put it on a CD for me, and I said I like it like this. Original," Frasier said.
Priceless artifacts from a man who knew and loved the King on a unique level.
"Kinda makes me want to go back to the '50s, ya know?"
He said he's been offered as much as $20,000 dollars for his collection. He didn't accept, though he's always open to negotiation. (EIN notes: Sadly it is not Elvis, because it is the same Shelby Singleton 'Good Golly Miss Molly' fake using Jimmy Ellis Orion as the voice of Elvis.)

'Elvis Presley Historical and Cultural Perspectives On A Modern Icon' New E-Book: A new book by author Ben Griffin, not about Elvis' music but his impact on society.

Flaming Star actor Steve Forrest dies age 87: Actor Steve Forrest, who was best known for a leading role on the short-lived 1970s television drama "S.W.A.T.," has died at the age of 87 in Thousand Oaks, California, near Los Angeles, his wife Christine said on Thursday.
He stared along side Elvis and Barbara Eden in the 1960 film 'Flaming Star' as Clint Burton.
Forrest appeared in 1954's "Prisoner of War," which also featured Ronald Reagan, who was later elected U.S. president. Forrest's older brother, Dana Andrews, was the star of 1940s films "Laura" and "The Best Years of Our Lives."
Forrest died peacefully on May 18, his family said in a statement.
He gained a following as Lt. Hondo Harrelson on the ABC crime drama series "S.W.A.T.," which ran for 37 episodes from 1975 to 1976 and was produced by Hollywood titans Leonard Goldberg and Aaron Spelling.
Forrest made a guest appearances in the 2003 film adaptation of the series.
The actor, who fought in the U.S. Army at the Battle of the Bulge in World War Two, got his big break when actor Gregory Peck saw him in a theater production in 1950, which led to a contract with film studio MGM.
He was born William Forrest Andrews on September 25, 1925, in Huntsville, Texas. He was the youngest of 13 children.
Forrest is survived by his wife, three sons and four grandchildren.

Graceland NOT for Sale: Several Elvis websites - as well as the UK's Financial Times - have incorrectly reported that Graceland is for sale. This is not true. In fact the reports notes, "A significant potential for expansion".
.. Elvis Presley’ EPE business and rights to the images of Elvis and Muhammad Ali are on the market with a possible price tag of more than $200m, people familiar with the process said.
Three people familiar with the process said Core Media Group, the entertainment group behind TV programmes such as American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, has begun approaching potential bidders from Asia, Europe and the US for Elvis Presley Enterprises and Muhammad Ali Enterprises.
Core, known as CKx before Apollo Global Management bought it for $509m in 2011, has appointed The Raine Group, a New York merchant bank, to review strategic alternatives, two of these people said. It is |

testing the market but could keep both if it is unhappy with the offers it receives, they said, but Core hopes to focus on producing content for television and digital outlets. Core and Raine declined to comment.
More than 35 years after Presley’s death and 32 years after Ali’s retirement, the two assets generate revenues of about $60m a year and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of about $23m.
Despite global downturn, a record of stable, predictable cash flows and a history of revenue raising Elvis re-releases, people familiar with the Presley estate see significant potential for expansion if a buyer is willing to invest.

The Presley family, represented by the singer’s daughter, Lisa Marie, retained 15 per cent of the company when it sold the remainder to Robert Sillerman’s CKx for about $100m in 2004.
Sony Music’s Legacy Recordings division holds the rights to all Presley’s master recordings, and has overseen several reissues, including plans to release a deluxe edition of “Elvis at Stax” in August.
Core considered a bid for Endemol before the European television production company’s owners put sale talks on hold. A successful sale could raise proceeds for a renewed attempt to buy Endemol or other production businesses.
EIN notes that while the news report says that Elvis Presley Enterprises includes, More than 110,000 pieces of memorabilia, including 3,000 pieces of clothing and 30 vehicles; royalties from 24 films; and copyrights and royalties for 1,150 songs. - These like Graceland itself are NOT for sale.
Lisa Marie has noted, "Business-wise any company can always grow, what is predominately sacred and can never be touched is Graceland itself and its contents and artifacts and that is and remains mine and my family's forever.
Lisa Marie has also clarified after the sale to CKx, "The home Graceland is absolutely mine. Everything in it is mine. All of his personal things are mine."
No need to worry Elvis fans, this could mean even more Elvis!

'Nobody' a new Elvis short Film: It is unusual to see EPE supporting a short film about Elvis that is only in pre-production. As EIN reported last month 'Nobody' is a short film about an 18-year-old kid named Elvis, before he became "Elvis Presley". The story features the tender relationship between him and his mother, his devoted teacher, and the talent show that changed everything...
It's an intimate portrait of a young dreamer, before the fame and fandom.
EIN was interested to know more, so we asked William Bryan (Writer/ Director/Producer) a few questions about the movie and his Elvis fascination.
EIN - Why make a film about Elvis' Humes High years?
William Bryan – To be fair, I should note that "Nobody" is a biographical (non-documentarian) short film that covers a single, vitally important moment of Elvis’ senior year. The reason I am telling this story is because it arguably was the night that transformed ‘that kid, Elvis’ into ‘Elvis Presley.’
EIN - A large amount of Elvis' legacy has been mythologized. Do you want to show the myth or the reality?
WB – My ultimate goal with this project is to depict an 18-year-old Memphian in a positive and historically accurate light. I have read and seen many accounts that showcased an inhuman or stereotypical representation of Elvis; and I would like to show the reality of who he was as a young man, before the fame and fandom.
EIN - Where are you getting the information from for the film, have you read Bill Burk's series of books?

WB – I couldn’t help but smile at your mention of Bill Burk. I happened to obtain all 3 of his "Early Elvis" books while visiting Presley’s birthplace in Tupelo, Mississippi. Having read and re-read that trilogy over the years, I couldn’t have told you before this summer that one of those entries would end up inspiring "Nobody." A single chapter, rather, a single paragraph in "Early Elvis: The Humes Years" was what instigated the concept for the film.
EIN - A large number of Elvis associates have passed away, how many have you contacted or interviewed from that period?
WB – While I have informally met a handful of individuals who went to school with Elvis, over the years, my prime resources for telling this story has been a series of books, among them including Burk’s "Early Elvis: The Humes Years" and Elaine Dundy’s "Elvis and Gladys."
EIN - Have you discovered more about Elvis' early history that you feel fans need to know about?

WB – This happens to be a very exciting question for me because, in my extensive research for the film, I discovered something about Elvis’ life that many fans and even historians have misinterpreted over the years. Respectfully, I’m going to keep that a secret until the film’s release. I would like to withhold a little mystery and intrigue to the story.
EIN - How much involvement have you had with EPE?
WB – While my production team and I are funding, arranging, and producing the project on our own as independent filmmakers ; I have nothing but the highest respect and gratitude for the good people at Elvis Presley Enterprises. They have not only showed continued encouragement for our endeavors, but as well, enthusiasm for the overall intention of depicting the man they represent in a positive light.
EIN - You are hoping that Elvis fans will help with your "Kickstarter campaign", what might they get out of donating to the movie?
WB – Our short film, low-budget goal is $12,000, and we only have until June 1st 2013 to reach this all-or-nothing aspiration. Sadly if we don't make this goal our funding will not happen. This is where I need my fellow Elvis fans, historians, and people-of-interest to come through for "Nobody." Each contributor will receive a unique set of rewards based on their donation (listed on the campaign), which can range from a special thanks in the credits, to a copy of the film, and up through a permanent Executive Producer credit on the production. With your kind contributions, we can reach our campaign’s ambition… and give Elvis Presley the cinematic justice he truly deserves.

Linda Thompson's Memoir: Linda Thompson is finally writing a memoir detailing her long romances with Elvis Presley, Bruce Jenner and David Foster. But it’s not a dirty tell-all. It’s the kind of well-tempered book we would expect from this Oscar-nominated lyricist and mother of Brody and Brandon Jenner.
"I got offers right away to write books — big money offers after Elvis died", Thompson says in her Memphis-cultured voice,"But I turned everything down. I didn’t want to be that person who capitalized on a lovely, loving, natural relationship.
"It was important to me not to be one of those vampires that bled on him."
Thompson was recently in Las Vegas at an official Elvis contest.
"He would be really astonished by it," she says of Elvis tribute artists.
Elvis and Thompson saw a few Elvis impressionists in their Vegas days.
"He would say, ‘Well, there I am again.’ It was funny. ‘Here I come again,’" she recalls. "Elvis had an irreverent sense of humor. It bonded us."
"We never went out on the town. I was with him four and a half years, and once we went to the restaurant at the Las Vegas Hilton, downstairs in the steakhouse, and we couldn’t finish our meal. It was chaos."

Her Elvis record collection is unlike any other.
"I have his album collection — but just what he collected, the things he listened to."
Thompson is more than Elvis memories. She and Foster co-wrote the Oscar-nominated "I Have Nothing" for Whitney Houston. She has written for other singers. And she has acted in TV shows.
She also works with charities for animals, children and old people.
Her adage: "People shouldn’t take life so seriously. None of us is going to get out of this thing alive, anyway." and she’s got this memoir nagging at her.
"Some things I’m privy to," she says, "I’ll have to take to the grave with me.
"I don’t think you ever win by hurting another person," she says. "Don’t sit around and wait for karma to bite somebody in the ass, or to reward you. Just try to do the right thing, and that’s immediate karma: ‘I feel good about myself.’"

The "Elvis Experience" Exhibition Returns to Brazil: Elvis fans from Brazil and throughout South America can enjoy the largest exhibition of personal items from the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll ever displayed outside of the United States, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, at the Barra Shopping South.
A first of its kind exhibition outside the United States, the "Elvis Experience" includes over 600 rare artifacts, documents and photos, many of which have never left the vaults or exhibit areas of Elvis Presley’s Graceland in Memphis. The exhibition debuted on September 5, 2012 in Sao Paulo and became one of the most successful exhibitions ever held in Brazil with over 100,000 visitors.
Among the items featured are Elvis’ red MG automobile from his classic film "Blue Hawaii," a gold plated rotary dial telephone from Elvis upstairs bedroom, and his signature white suit featured in the closing number of his 1968 television special now referred to as "The ’68 Special."
In addition to the exhibition, South American fans will also be able to experience "Elvis Presley in Concert" when it returns with nine shows in seven cities beginning in October of 2013.

'St. Louis Blues' New Import CD: Expected soon is new CD entitled 'St. Louis Blues' from the E.P. Collector label, from an audience recording at the Kiel Auditorium, St. Louis, March 22, 1976 tour closing show. It was last Elvis show during his lifetime, reviewed in Rolling Stone #213. Some of Elvis stable musicians were replaced and the result was surprisingly fresh sound with keyboards more prominent. Among the highlights are ”Let Me Be There” (performed for very last time), ”Steamroller Blues”, ”Polk Salad Annie”, ”Hurt” and ”America (The Beautiful)”. Since the show is rather short, producers decided to add 9 solid bonus tracks from Johnson City, March 19, 1976 show.
This previously unreleased recording was taken from a 1st generation copy of the original audience recorded tape and the sound - though not perfect - is far better than any other known version of this show. The CD is packaged in nicely designed digipak with collection of March 22, 1976 photos.

Proposed new Elvis Statue at Circle G: A group of Elvis Presley fans wants to preserve the memory of the king's cowboy side by finding a buyer for a DeSoto County ranch to make it a destination for visitors.
Sue Mack, owner of Mike's Memphis Tours and a representative of The Circle G Foundation, says the statue project could be a fundraising mechanism. Bricks that would be part of the exhibit could be sold to donors. That would raise money for restoration of the ranch. Mack says the statue could help draw tourism to the Horn Lake area.
"With Graceland just down the street, those people who would want to see it area already in the area," Mack told Horn Lake Mayor Nat Baker and aldermen this week. "If you put up a statue of him, they will come here to see it."
Horn Lake officials were receptive to helping find a location for a statue but wanted Mack to check first with Elvis Presley Enterprises to ensure there would be no problems with casting a likeness of Elvis.
"I think all of us would feel better knowing it had their approval," Baker told Mack.
Mack said organisers were in the process of making the necessary contacts and would get back to Horn Lake officials. She said a |

Marty Pasetta - One of The Best Elvis ever worked with: Marty Lacker wrote to EIN about our Marty Pasetta article. (see below)
... It was nice to hear that Marty Pasetta is still going strong as he was one of the nicest people we ever worked with.
It was surprising yet refreshing to hear what he was thinking back then as his actions and words were always praising and encouraging to Elvis and some of us. I got to know him fairly well although I have not spoken to him since a few years after Aloha when he Directed and produced The Grammys Award Show from Nashville and I got him to add The Staple Singers and Al Green as performers so Memphis would be represented on the show. He was very accommodating to me by doing that.
It was typical of Parker and his bullshit about the runway height, whenever he got involved in the production side of anything Elvis did, he always messed it up which hurt Elvis' career.

Marty almost got it right in his comments about Parker and touring outside the U.S. He came up with the idea of the satellite show for his own selfish reasons. Not just because of the money he made but this was his way of not having Elvis tour outside the U.S. because Parker did not want Elvis to do that without Parker travelling with him but we now know that Parker was an illegal alien and he was afraid he would be discovered and deported or jailed because of it and if he managed to go he was afraid he wouldn't be allowed back in to the U.S. because of it plus he might not have been able to get a passport without a valid |

birth certificate proving he was an American citizen.
I found it humorous too that Elvis told Marty to deal with Esposito instead of Parker because they were basically one and the same. Joe probably told Parker everything Marty wanted because Joe was his boy.
However because he knew better I'm sure he also told Elvis what Marty Pasetta said.

Firstly the first takes are fantastic - "I had to leave town for a little while. You said you been good while I’m gone, but the look in your eye"...Elvis voice falters on the opening of first takes R&B nugget, “Wearing That Loved On Look" takes 3,10 - and amid nervous laughter, and the "A Little Less Conversation" one liner, he knows he’s got to get it right before regaining his mojo on an excellent take which sounds crystal clear hear - and listen to those funky guitar breaks...great organ too. Elvis sings: "Alright" before the piano solo and a more prominent bass drum kicks, adding to the gospel rave-up feel...

More standouts – Jerry Butler’s "Only The Strong Survive" take 1 – “Boy! Oh, I see yer sitting out there all alone. Crying your eyes out, because the women that you love is gone." Elvis sings the lyric line with pure yearning soul... - he finishes the song with, "oh s..." - but Elvis knows he's nailed it
"You finally got your dream - you’re riding in a long black limousine" - prophetic words on take 6 "Long Black Limousine" which gets a wonderfully gorgeous gospel piano feel - the powerful, tragic storytelling tale is a gem in the Elvis canon - here it sounds stripped back but still very powerful.
The stripped down first takes are a real joy to listen to.
Hank Snow's "I'm Moving On" takes 1, 2, Elvis sings a different verse early on and it is a very enjoyable version. There's bump & grind blues power on "Power of my Love" - but perhaps a stone cold classic is Elvis playing the piano intro on R&B stomper - "After Loving You" - the song breaks up at the end but this is a delightfully loose version...
Bobby Emmons' great organ playing enhances 'Any Day Now' takes 1,2 - after working through a short take 1, Elvis delivers a flowing version.

There's more: we get 3 beautiful takes of 'In The Ghetto' to finish CD-1 with takes 2, 3 being of particular note: Felton asks for the mic to capture more of the acoustic guitar; turned up more the guitar adds another dimension to the political songs reflective story telling - fabulous!
What's apparent here is Disc Two adds to the quality with more great takes. Instrument nuances pop and crackle - and the numerous takes all have subtle differences...
Another standout is – 'True Love Travels On A Gravel Road' (take 4) - with the opening line: "How many girls choose cotton dressed worlds, when they could have satins and lace..." Wonderful lyrics and listen to Elvis off mic remark - "Oh baby" - he's enjoying the hell out it and working hard.
The aforementioned "After Loving You" thrills once more but this time take 3, Disc Two - Elvis says: "Is someone else taking lead because I can't play it to save my a.. that piano" - before a delicious, bluesy cool version that just swaggers before falling apart.
The booklet and package sparkles although I would have liked more photos from the era. But the main event is the music and FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS delivers the goods
It has to be said Presley's recording sessions were fun-filled affairs, but as the first takes demonstrate here Elvis was working hard on all the songs and his utter professionalism to get the songs right - spurred on by Chips Moman and the American Sound Studio team is fascinating to hear - another top draw release from FTD.

She kissed Elvis, then became a Nun!: In the sultry climate of New Orleans, where she broke into films in 1957’s "Loving You," co-starring a young singer named Elvis Presley, Dolores Hart locked lips with the hottest musical sensation of the day. That kiss — a first for both on screen, and in Technicolor, no less — was a stunning start to a brief film career.
Six years later, the young actress entered the Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem, Conn., and began a life far removed from the flash and glamour of Hollywood. Today, she is the Rev. Mother Dolores Hart, prioress, or second-in-charge, at the abbey.
"The kiss from Elvis was the thing that put me right smack into the middle of Hollywood; it’s where I wanted to be," Mother Dolores said in an interview this week. However, she added, "My vocation, it really was a gift from God, a call from God. Something I knew I really I had to do."
Mother Dolores tells her story in "The Ear of the Heart: An Actress’ Journey from Hollywood to Holy Vows," just released by Ignatius Press.
A documentary film about her journey, "God Is the Bigger Elvis," was up for a 2012 Academy Award, but didn’t win. Ironically, Mother Dolores, who joined the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1960, is a voting member who casts an annual Oscar ballot.
Although she was raised Roman Catholic and Elvis was a Protestant, that didn’t stop the two young adults — she was 19, he was 21 — from palling around during filming, when Presley was mobbed by local teens.
"He carried a guitar even between scenes, and they would sing gospel music," Mother Dolores recalled. "I loved it." |

The two went their separate ways, with Mother Dolores acting in nine more films, including Presley’s "King Creole" a year later. By 1963, Mother Dolores, who was engaged to businessman Don Robinson, left Hollywood and her pending marriage for a religious life.
Robinson, never married, remained a friend and visitor to the abbey until his death at the end of 2011.

'Love Me Tender' on Blu-ray in 2013: Elvis' big screen debut is hitting Blu-ray in July. Moviegoers were introduced to Elvis Presley in this film set during the dying hours of the Civil War. Elvis sings four songs, including the title song. The year is 1865, and the three Confederate Reno brothers don't know the war has ended. They manage to steal a Union Army payroll, and head for home with the money. While Vance (Richard Egan) can think only of the love of his life, Cathy (Debra Paget), it turns out that the brothers have been reported dead, and Cathy has married their youngest brother Clint (Elvis Presley). Vance accepts this until he learns that Cathy still loves him. To complicate things, the U.S. Army knows of the brothers' theft and is hunting them down.
The Blu-ray will feature 1080p video, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack, and supplements will include: Audio Commentary By Noted Elvis Historian Jerry Schilling; Elvis Hits Hollywood; The Colonel & The King; Love Me Tender: The Birth & Boom Of The Elvis Hit; and Love Me Tender: The Soundtrack.
In an early announcement, 20th Century Fox is preparing 'Love Me Tender' for Blu-ray on July 30.

Director Marty Pasetta Talks about 'Aloha': Forty years ago last month, NBC aired the 90-minute special 'Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite' after a shorter version was seen around the globe LIVE on Jan. 14, 1973. (Right:Elvis, Waterson & Pasetta)
It was the first time satellite technology was used to transmit a live concert around the world and the project gave Presley one last magnificent credit to add to his legend.
The idea for a satellite broadcast was conceived by Presley's manager, Col Parker, while they both lived part-time in Palm Springs in 1972. Parker sold the idea to RCA, which owned NBC, and NBC's vice president of nighttime programming, part-time Palm Springs resident John Hamlin, assigned it to Marty Pasetta.
Pasetta, 81, who now lives in La Quinta, Calif., says he's not sure how many people saw the broadcast.
"What I was told by NBC and others is that every third person on Earth saw that first show when it went out," Pasetta said in his memorabilia-laden home office. "In Africa and places like that, it played in theaters. They didn't have television." |

By the accounts of those closest to him, the Aloha concert was the last time Presley suspended his prescription drug abuse and performed at his optimum 175-pound weight.
Biographer Peter Guralnick and Sonny West credit Pasetta for inspiring the singer to clean up his act. After meeting Pasetta, West said that Elvis insisted that he and two other bodyguards join him on a diet to burn up the fat in his system. Pasetta said he told Presley at their first sit-down meeting, attended by two bodyguards, he had to lose weight before the concert.
"He sat straight and the guys on either side of him took out their guns and laid them down on the table, and if you don't think I was scared, you're crazy.
"I said, 'I want you skinny because I'm going to use close-ups,' which wasn't very popular in television in those days. I said, 'I'm going to go from your neck to the top of your head. That's going to be your sex appeal on the tube, along with your voice, and it's going to make a landmark.'
"He jumped out his chair. He grabbed me, put his arms around me and said, 'You're the first person who was ever honest to me.' He said, 'I will lose the weight for you,' and he lost 20 pounds in two months."
Working with Elvis
Pasetta was just coming off his Academy Awards broadcast directorial debut when Hamlin offered him the opportunity to work with Presley. Pasetta wasn't sure he wanted to do it at first. Hamlin told him to watch Presley at the Long Beach Arena that November and Presley gave an uninspiring performance.

"He stood there like a lump," said Pasetta. "He didn't do anything. I went back to NBC and said, 'Hey, guys, what am I going to do with this guy? How long is the show? 90 minutes? I can't tap dance that much. It doesn't look like he's going to move.' They said, 'That's your problem.' "
The concert film would feature Presley giving a one-hour benefit concert at the HIC Center. Pasetta tried to provide an international reach by putting Elvis' name on the set in various international alphabets and fonts. He also tried to convey Presley's romantic appeal, much to Parker's consternation.
"I wanted to put a runway in, 8 foot wide, so he could walk down the center," said Pasetta. "I wanted to put girls around there and I wanted the stage 6 feet off of the floor. The Colonel always had the stage 10 feet above the floor and he had guards across the front. He didn't want to have anybody touch his boy.
"When I told this to the Colonel, he had a fit. He said, 'I'm not lowering the stage. I'm going to have my guards there and he can stand there and sing.' I said, 'That's not going to work on the tube for an hour and a half show.' He said, 'No. I won't do it. You can't do the show.' "
But Pasetta says Presley loved his ideas and, in one of the few instances in his career, he overruled his manager.

"Elvis said to me, 'The Colonel controls my business. I control my creativity and my music and my show. He has nothing to say about it. That's your rule. You will deal with Joe Esposito'," said Pasetta. "I talked to Joe, the Colonel — everybody. But I tried not to deal too much with the Colonel. I had enough problems getting the show on."
The production however was fraught with technical problems. A day before the broadcast, it was
discovered someone had cut the power lines going into the auditorium. Pasetta
called Don Ho and, "He got people out of bed and they came back and fixed it just in time."
The day of the show, it was discovered the backstage equipment was creating a humming sound. Pasetta called Ho again and, "Don said, 'Call the Navy yard.' We had a truckload lead sheets that were brought over two hours before the show and we lined them up and got our sound back."
Then, at the start of the show, knowing they had to shoot the entire concert continuously, "My technical director froze on me," Pasetta said. "I had to cut the first part of the show. He was nervous."
The soundtrack entered the Billboard charts on Feb. 24, bolstered by Presley's best reviews in years. It would be his last No. 1 album. The next week, Parker signed a seven-year deal for Presley to remain with RCA.
Aloha From Hawaii also temporarily quieted demands for Presley to tour overseas, something Parker was reticent to do.

Mike Stoller Talks Elvis and Rock 'n' Roll Repertoire: Former Elvis Week guest and legendary song-writer Mike Stoller recently sat down with Voice of American to talk about the evolution of rock 'n' roll.
Among many hits, the song-writing duo Mike Stoller and Jerry Leiber penned Elvis classics such as "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock." Elvis went on to record more than 20 of Leiber and Stoller's songs. Stoller describes how he and his life-long writing partner first began composing in an interview with Mike O'Sullivan from Voice of America.
"I'd be jamming at the piano and he'd be walking around shouting phrases out, anything that came into his head," said Stoller.

Original "Aloha from Hawaii" full-length cape for Auction: Elvis Presley's original full-length "Aloha from Hawaii" cape is up for auction this Saturday, May 18th, 2013 at Juliens.
The floor-length cape, designed by Bill Belew, has an eagle design across the back composed of prong-set studs in red, blue and gold on a white ground. The cape is lined in blue satin. Presley worked closely with Belew to design a motif for the cape that represented America for the 1973 concert that was broadcast via satellite. Presley reportedly wanted to use the cape to hide behind during the Aloha intro and then drop the cape to reveal himself to the audience. The completed cape was found in rehearsals to be too heavy for the actual performance. Belew created a shorter version for the actual performance. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Greg Howell of Elvis Presley Enterprises, Graceland.
Cape measures: 63 1/2 inches from collar to hem; 62 inches from cuff to cuff
Weight, approximately 12 1/2 pounds

Westboro Baptist Church Plans To Picket Graceland: Members of the Westboro Baptist Church, best known for their protests and picketing at the funeral services of soldiers, are planning to demonstrate in front of Graceland on Friday, May 17th at 4:45 p.m.
According to their website, Westboro members view Elvis Prelsey as a false idol and a drug addict. Here's their bizarre explanation:

been gathered together for the first time in one comprehensive package as 'ELVIS
AT STAX: DELUXE EDITION' bristles with energy and dynamism. The deluxe 3-CD box
set, a 40th anniversary chronicle of a dozen nights that Presley spent at Stax
Recording Studios in his hometown of Memphis in July and Dec 1973, will be released worldwide August 6.
Released simultaneously will be a single CD of highlights from the box set simply titled ELVIS AT STAX, and a 180-gram, double-vinyl LP.
The official website notes 'ELVIS AT STAX' bristles with energy and dynamism. The proof is in the six consecutive singles that the Stax sessions produced, all of which skirted the Top 40 from 1973 to 1975. In effect, they rivaled some of the hottest streaks that Presley had charted a decade earlier. The Stax singles still resonate today: |

Ernst Jørgensen has long been concerned with doing justice to the Stax sessions, which were never acknowledged by the artist's record label RCA as a unified whole. Instead, as with most of Presley's studio work in his second decade as a recording artist, the tracks were scattered onto LPs and intermingled with material recorded in Nashville and Hollywood. The bulk of the Stax cuts showed up on Raised On Rock/For Ol’ Times Sake (1973), Good Times (1974), and Promised Land (1975). For ELVIS AT STAX, many of the outtakes originated on the reissues of those three albums on the FTD label. ELVIS AT STAX was produced by Jørgensen, Semon, and Rob Santos of Legacy A&R.
Taking up the cause for ELVIS AT STAX is another scholar and aficionado of the artist, award-winning resident Memphis journalist Robert Gordon, who has written an in-depth, day-by-day liner notes essay for the box set.

Elvis spent 12 days at Stax in 1973 (July 21-25 and December 10-16), and the rollercoaster ride of those sessions is meticulously detailed in Gordon’s liner notes. ELVIS AT STAX neatly compartmentalizes the results:

'Original Album Classics' 2013 Re-Release: Originally issued in 2008 these budget 5CD box-sets are being re-released in 2013 with new cover designs.
The first set includes Elvis' early albums, 'Elvis Presley', 'Elvis', 'Loving You', 'Elvis Is Back' and 'G.I Blues'.
The second box-set features the 1960s albums, 'Blue Hawaii', 'Pot Luck', 'Girls Girls Girls', 'Fun In Acapulco' and the cool newly created 'Viva Las Vegas'. (How odd as 'Viva Las Vegas' was not an album originally!).
For the general public these will be great value for money.

Circle G Foundation launches 'The Spirit Of Circle G Project': The Circle G Foundation announces the launch of its new awareness campaign, “Spirit of the Circle G,” introducing ambassador Cody Ray Slaughter, EPE’s 2011 “Ultimate ETA” and current star of the “Million Dollar Quartet” U.S. national tour.
With his noted career achievements and growing international visibility, 21-year-old Cody Ray Slaughter is one of the freshest faces in Elvis tribute artistry. Amazon has released their details of the tracklisting of the three disc set,
although it looks in a rather odd order. The outtakes on the second disc before
the glorious Masters of 'For Ol' Time Sake' plus 'Raised On Rock', 'I've Got A
Thing About You Baby' etc just don't make sense.
However it does give an idea of planned content even if the track order is incorrect.
Ernst Jorgensen has supposedly noted that "The Masters will all be in their original mixes, but transferred at a higher resolution to further improve the sound. All the outtakes have been remixed." Presumably by Vic Anesini who has worked on these tapes already.

Stax Story - Why Elvis ended up recording at Stax: Marty Lacker gives us the low-down on why Elvis ended up at the STAX studios.
... The reason I chose Stax Studios when Elvis asked me to get him a studio to record was because it was secure with a fence and gate guards. Elvis didn't care what studio it was as long as it wasn't American Studios that Parker and Felton poisoned his mind against. When he asked me to get it for him he added that the session didn't mean anything to him and that the only reason he was doing it was because Parker and RCA were nagging him to record.
The songs that Parker and Freddy Bienstock sent him to record were the usual horrible songs they had a piece of the publishing on. I brought him "Raised On Rock" which in my opinion he would have had a hit on if it had been cut at American with Chips Moman and his rhythm section, also "Lovin' Arms" that I think he did a good job on which was published by David Briggs and Norbert Putnam and "We Had It All" which would have been perfect for him but after rehearsing it about 20 times he told me he loved the song but he couldn't do it because he |

didn't want people to think he was singing it about him and Priscilla. Which to me was ridiculous. My discovery, Rita Coolidge, went on to cut it and she had a big hit with it.
As for the rumors of Elvis trying out some other Chuck Berry songs apart from "Promised Land", yes Elvis had sometimes sung Chuck Berry songs in Graceland - but for whatever reason decided not to record any more of them at this session. Elvis also used to sing Aretha's "Chain Of Fools" a lot.
While Elvis was in the studio working on the songs I was in the office we were using for Elvis to rest in between songs and Bienstock, in front of Tom Diskin and Vernon Presley tried to intimate that I was making money off of Elvis and that wouldn't Elvis be interested in knowing that. I looked him in the eye and said, "You should go in there (the studio), and tell Elvis that but let me save you the trouble, he already knows because I don't do anything like that without telling him."
"All I try to do Freddy is bring Elvis good songs,maybe you should try to do it sometime and your accusation towards me is like the pot calling the kettle black!" He then shut up. I'm sure though that either |

he or Diskin later told Parker about it, I think that plus me getting Elvis to record at American, was the reason Parker tried to keep future sessions secret from me so I wouldn't bring him songs they didn't have the publishing on. They didn't care how that effected Elvis both career wise and mentally.

Carol Butler of EPE Licensing has died: Elvis Presley Fans of Nashville, would like to bestow our sympathies to the family of Carol Butler, whose fight against cancer ended shortly after midnight came on Wednesday, May 8th.
Carol was a 18 year employee of Elvis Presley Enterprises, as the Vice President of Worldwide Licensing. She repetitively worked solid to provide Elvis fans around the world with numerous licensed Elvis products to help celebrate their love of Elvis.
Fans may not have heard of Carol Butler but she was deeply involved in development and expanding the marketing of Elvis product. She has noted in the past that, "Currently, about five to 10 companies each week complete the application process to enter into a licensing agreement and EPE typically moves forward with one or two of the proposals.
It has to be a good match, and there has to be an understanding of Elvis and what our goals are. If a company does seem like it will be a good match, we will look at the product and make sure it is a quality item that will enhance the brand.”
Butler was involved with the "Viva Elvis" theatre show and rather oddly the Elvis Mr. Potato Head figure.
She said at the time, “We would never want to poke fun at Elvis, and we don’t think the Mr. Potato Head does that. With the product, we can introduce Elvis to kids at a very young age. We want 3 and four-year olds to know about Elvis in a positive way.”

It is highly likely that the 3CD set will consist of Elvis' key "Stax" albums 'Raised On Rock', 'Good Times' and 'Promised Land' with the Masters by Vic Anesini from the Complete Masters set. There has been suggestions that some outakes will also be featured.
As most fans are aware these 1973 STAX sessions were not the success that RCA had hoped for. Elvis was not particularly interested in recording and a large number of the selected songs were fairly weak.
These recordings were certaintly nothing like the unbelievably soulful STAX studio sixties output that the General Public are familiar with by the likes of Sam & Dave, Issac Hayes or Booker T and the MGs.

Elvis' Cadillac Tours Australian Hospital!: Today is the 200th Anniversary of the Australian Benevolent Society charity. Back in 1968 it was like Christmas in July to the Australian kids in Port Kembla, but instead of Santa's sleigh laden with gifts it was a gold Cadillac rolling in presents from The King. Hundreds of underprivileged kids around Australia shared in thousands of dollars worth of toys from Elvis, delivered wrapped in gold. The Cadillac was painted with 40 coats of diamond dust and fish scales, and had $10,000 worth of gold equipment, including a lounge, a television, a telephone plus a refreshment bar with an ice-maker and refrigerator.

Port Kembla's hospital was one of 40 stops on the fund-raising tour that raised $150,000 for The Benevolent Society. After the tour, Elvis was made a "life governor" of the society.

Elvis Soprano Millie Kirkham Joins Elvis Week 2013: Long-time Elvis soprano Millie Kirkham will join DJ Fontana on Saturday, August 17, for the Elvis Celebration Concert during Elvis Week 2013. Kirkham's strong, clear soprano voice can be heard on many of Elvis' pop, rock, gospel and country recordings.
Millie first recorded with Elvis in 1957, which yielded, among other classics, "Blue Christmas," which features some of the most unique vocal background work she and the Jordanaires ever did with the superstar. Throughout the next twenty years Kirkham's strong, clear soprano could be heard on hits such as "The Wonder of You," "Surrender," "How Great Thou Art," "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Don't', 'Just Pretend," and many others. She also sang with Elvis on movie soundtracks and appeared with him on stage in Las Vegas.

'Elvis At 21' exhibition in Fort Worth this month: In advance of their upcoming special photography exhibit featuring Elvis Presley that will open in late May and run through the summer, the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History is sponsoring two events during the next two weeks to preview the show.
The exhibit "Elvis at 21,” features 56 pictures taken by freelance photojournalist Alfred Wertheimer. The photos, all black and white with many in large format, present Elvis at the very beginning of his journey to become The King of Rock ’n’ Roll. The exhibit will run from May 25 through Sept. 2.
At 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Magnolia Motor Lounge bar and grill at 3005 Morton St. in Fort Worth, Elvis’ former tour manager Charles Stone will talk about his experiences working with Presley and Col. Tom Parker, the singer’s legendary manager.
Clara Ruddell, avid researcher of Texas and Western history, will look back on the night Elvis made his way to Fort Worth to perform April 20,

UPDATED - 'Aloha From Hawaii' 40th Anniv LEGACY CD Review: There is no doubt that most people reading this review will know Elvis’ phenomenal Aloha From Hawaii' concert inside out. Every fan will know the TV broadcast, most fans will have bought the album several times, a fair number will have also bought the "Alternate Aloha" rehearsal and a few will have seen the original broadcast on TV back in 1973.
We all know this classic record-breaking concert so well. Dressed in his stunning "American-Eagle" jumpsuit, tanned, slim and Adonis-like, Elvis was truly at the peak of his later career.
But with no "new" material to be offered on this Legacy 40th Anniversary re-release do the audio re-masters and packaging with 24 page booklet create a release worth of such a magnificent event.

Wertheimer at the Grammy Museum: Last week photographer Alfred Wertheimer was at the LA Grammy Museum for a discussion about his new book, "Elvis and the Birth of Rock and Roll."
EIN contributor Paul Gansky was there and reports back...
... Alfred Wertheimer chatted about his Elvis experiences and was very entertaining. Wertheimer is about 80 now and still a bachelor. He still always has a camera and takes photos of the audience and guests even when speaking. He showed a great sense of humor and great memory regarding his photos and all circumstances.
He talked about Barbara Gray the "Kiss lady" and how she married very early had baby and was divorced by 17.

Wertheimer claimed he has been doing the same photo gig (Elvis) for 57 years now and it was his lifelong job.
He said he has 2,500 Elvis photos and always preferred available light

only, to preserve mood with 1/5 second exposures, hand held steady. One good pic out of three was usual result which is phenomenal. 99 percent were black and white.
One good story was that he so regretted not having any spare film when Elvis took him for motorcycle ride. They ran out of gas and had to sit on the curb until they were rescued by a girl fan in a car who fetched a gallon and got a kiss.
He talked about his career and how lucky he was to get the Elvis gig. He originally thought it was to photograph Tommy Dorsey!

New Book Dolores Hart 'The Ear of the Heart': Dolores Hart is publishing her biography 'The Ear of the Heart: An Actress' Journey from Hollywood to Holy Vows'. Michael Jackson didn't want to die like my father Elvis: Lisa Marie Presley will tell a court that her ex-husband Michael Jackson feared he would die of a drugs overdose, as her father had done.
Ms Presley, 45, has agreed to take the stand in a $40 billion case surrounding Jackson’s death in 2009.
Jackson’s mother and children are suing concert promoters AEG claiming executives hired Dr Conrad Murray to do ‘whatever it took’ to get Jackson ready for a series of concerts at London’s O2 arena.
Jackson, who was 50, died weeks before the concerts. Murray was sentenced to four years in jail for involuntary manslaughter in 2011.
A family source said: ‘Lisa called Jackson’s mother Katherine after his death and said he often spoke about how he didn’t want to end up like Elvis.’
Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley married in May 1994. They became close when she supported through allegations of child molestation.

- 'On Stage' Special double-VINYL: FTD vinyl is pleased to announce the release of 'On Stage' a Special Limited Edition 2-disc 180-gram vinyl set.
The tracklist features a selection of Elvis' February Las Vegas recordings plus the 1969 'Runaway' but doesn’t follow the track list of the original "On Stage" album. It also for some reason does not include the original "additional" 1969 track 'Yesterday'.
It is however a very interesting compilation of Elvis live in 1972 on VINYL with tracks compiled from several FTD CD releases, 'On Stage' and 'Polk Salad Annie' and 'At The International'.

'Being Father Elvis' New Documentary: Paolo Cammarano, Italian film director is developing a new documentary. The title is 'Being Father Elvis' and is about a man, Antoniu Petrescu, a rumanian priest who has lived since years in a little town of Italy. All this time he has followed two really different paths: from one side he has continued to be a priest, but from another side he has started a musician career as impersonator of Elvis Presley.
His passion for Elvis started when he was a child in the communist Romania where the American dream was identified with the figure of Elvis.
He tries to go on with these two identities but often he faces the contrasts of the catholic hierarchy and also his community is divided.
We would like to tell the story of his passion, from the origins in Bucharest to the present, and for this reason we have followed him in the last two years. |

Harley Payette, contributor and good friend to EIN, journalist and freelance writer passed away April 29, 2013. Harley had been suffering with cancer for a while but at only 43 years old it is far too young an age to be taken from his family, friends and loved-ones.
EIN sends its sincere condolences to his family.

Elvis And The Vocal Group Tradition: Elvis Presley and doo-wop are not two phrases that normally go together. But, the vocal-group tradition was a profound part of the King's musical heritage, and the group sound's influence on Presley demonstrates the way the art form has infiltrated and informed pop music even if the sound is not visible on the surface.
But like blues, gospel and country, the vocal-group sound was where Elvis returned whenever he needed a shot of the real thing. It was a part of who he was.

George Jones, Country legend, has died: Country music legend George Jones died Friday April 26 at Vanderbilt Uni Medical Center.
Born September 12, 1931, Jones is regarded among the most important and influential singers in American popular music history. He was the singer of classics hits including "She Thinks I Still Care," "The Grand Tour," "Walk Through This World With Me," "A Good Year for the Roses", "Tender Years" and "He Stopped Loving Her Today," the latter of which is often at the top of industry lists of the greatest country music singles of all time.
Tammy Wynette noted, "The greatest voice in country music, both past and present, certainly is that of George Jones. Never have I heard a voice packed with such emotion and feeling and I truly doubt that we’ll ever hear an equal. Some of the proudest moments of my career are my recordings with George. Long live the King!"

peaking at number four and beginning a remarkable commercial string: Jones would ultimately record more than 160 charting singles, more than any other artist in any format in the history of popular music.
Jones' first number one hit came in 1959 with "White Lightning," a Mercury Records single that topped Billboard country charts for five weeks. He married Tammy Wynette in 1969. Jones signed with Epic Records in 1971 and worked with producer Billy Sherrill to craft a sound at once elegant and rooted, scoring with "The Grand Tour," "Bartenders Blues" and many more. Sherrill also produced duets between Jones and his then-wife Tammy Wynette, and in the 1970s they scored top-charting hits including "We're Gonna Hold On," "Golden Ring" and "Near You."
His solo career cooled until 1980, when he recorded "He Stopped Loving Her Today," which won Country Music Association prizes for best male vocal and top single. He also earned a Grammy for best male country vocal performance.

'To Live And Die In Dixie' New Import CD: Coming out soon is the new Straight Arrow's double-digipak release "TO LIVE AND DIE IN DIXIE", featuring audience recordings of the February 19, 1972 Dinner and Midnight performances. This 6th Las Vegas season has been somewhat overlooked by bootleggers, mainly due to the below-par sound quality of the audience recorded tapes available. The last few years, the Straight Arrow team has been looking for good sounding amateur recordings from this particular season, and we are pleased to announced that we finally succeeded in locating two very good tapes obtained directly from the person who recorded them.
Most of the fans know that this is the engagement where Priscilla told Elvis that she was leaving him. Very little else seems to stand out for the casual observer. In many ways that's a pity, because this engagement is crucial on a number of levels. Firstly, because it represented a return to form. The early '72 Vegas shows surprised both the critics and fans because of Elvis' serious commitment to his music

and his no-nonsense delivery. These shows marked also the first time that he performed the now-legendary "Theme 2001" / "C. C. Rider" opening, plus he also introduces various new songs to the show that are now widely considered as his finest show additions from the 70s, including "A Big Hunk O‘Love", "You Gave Me A Mountain", "Never Been To Spain", "I’ll Remember You" and "An American Trilogy". Actually, the best-ever versions of "Trilogy" are from this engagement!
As a bonus, we added the only known live-performance of "I'm Leaving It All Up To You" from the February 10th, 1972 Midnight show.
Both shows are strong and focused and they give the listener a good impression of Elvis' renewed interest in his music and his stage performances. These concerts are previously unreleased and they are presented in their complete form and in the best possible sound quality.

Awesome 1974 Elvis Footage!: It's been kicking around on import DVDs for a while, but this is some of the best fan footage of Elvis in 1974 - from Kansas City June 29th, 1974. Elvis gets the giggles at the start which is very cute! He is in great humour.
Apparently this footage was filmed by the late Rex Martin when he toured the states in "74" before it was stolen from his vast collection.

The Nations Favourite Elvis Song - UK: The factual arm of ITV Studios UK, Shiver, has been commissioned by ITV to produce The Nation's Favourite Elvis Song, a 90-minute prime-time special focused on the top 20 songs by the King of Rock 'n' Roll. The production, which will air later in the year, features commentary from Priscilla Presley as well as a number of producers and musicians.
Mark Robinson, the creative director of Shiver, commented: "Our Nation's Favourite… format has celebrated some of the greatest acts in popular music, but none bigger than the King of Rock 'n' Roll himself. This special tells the fascinating stories behind Elvis' best known songs, in the words of the people who knew him best, climaxing with the revelation of The Nation's Favourite Elvis Song."
Phil Savill, the director of marketing for CMG/Sony Music, added: "I am delighted that ITV have chosen to celebrate the marvellous music of Elvis Presley with this ITV special. - 'Heart And Soul' drops from 65 to 80 selling some 1,971 units. Total sales to date: 637,987 units. It also drops from 126 to 152 on the Physical Album Chart selling some 1,969 units. ... "This Super8mm video is from the matinee (2:30PM) show. I was only 16 years old at the time, but it was such a memorable experience. Elvis was the greatest entertainer of all time.. Although it's not the highest quality, I am adding this video as a memory jogger for those who may have been in attendance that day."

Elvis Week Through The Years - Sanja Meegin looks back: EIN's Sanja Meegin has been to Memphis and attended Elvis Week 13 times in the past 15 years. During that time she has witnessed great concerts as well as met up with many of Elvis’ family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances.
For the past decade Sanja has done her best to get to every concert, book signing, ceremony, convention, appearance and memorial that she could manage and report back to EIN for those who couldn’t be there to experience it for themselves. Of course that hasn’t been easy when combined with the excruciatingly hot Southern summer temperatures, the lure of cocktails on Beale Street and keeping the hours Elvis kept whilst there – party all night, sleep all day - but she has done her best! - Part of our EIN 100th newsletter celebration!

New Book 'Elvis Music FAQ' - Some Details: Author Mike Eder, who has contributed to JAT and the Elvis Files books, will
have his first book out later this year "Elvis Music FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the King's Recorded Works".
EIN members have asked us for some more details about this book and what it entails. Here EIN asks author Mike Eder some preliminary questions..
EIN: How long have you been working on the book?
Mike Eder: I was signed late fall 2011 upon my submission of an outline and sample chapter. I began my main period of work at the start of 2012. The text was finished last December and I am now doing the very final editing, photo placement, etc.
EIN: How will the book differ from Ernst Jorgensen's 'A Life In Music' book?
Eder: Being that I respect his work, and also knowing that most fans have read it, I decided to try to make it as different as possible.
His work was done hands on, and mine was done through being a hard core fan for 31 years. Much of the book is my take on Elvis' records issued during his lifetime, my only real goal being an attempt to find some balance when assessing Elvis the artist and human being. This isn't going to be a whitewash, but I made it my goal to write about Elvis' issues with some open compassion.
Along with the records, I also cover every major career event such as films, tours, sessions etc. I put the importance back on what Elvis himself tried to |

present as an artist. I am a pretty independent thinker when it comes to music so I can guarantee my take on his career differs from those published before. I was also as meticulous as possible on getting the facts correct.
Actually if any book influenced this one it was Robert Matthew-Walkers seminal 1978 "Elvis Presley : A Study In Music". He praised songs or knocked them as he saw fit. There were no sacred cows, nor were there any songs beyond redemption. The format of my book is completely different in both style and opinion, but his success at thinking about Elvis independently from others was an inspiration if you will.
EIN: What 'Inside scoops" can fans expect?
Eder: I own more than 400 books on Elvis. and set myself the goal of not copying any previous style or conclusions. There are enough unique items in the book to keep the hard core fan interested, and both they and more casual Elvis listeners will find a lot together in one place. Whenever I could I discussed facts and subjects I hadn't seen in other books. When that was not possible I tried to focus on things not covered elsewhere in enough detail. On top of that I think it still covers all the basics.
EIN: Colonel Parker, good or bad?
Eder: Parker never went about things the way I would have. Even the 1955 RCA contract should have had an addendum permitting Sam to continue recording Elvis. Yet placing my own instincts aside, I must admit he was very astute in the fifties. That goes especially where television was concerned. If I were Elvis I would have fired him upon hearing the "G.I. Blues" demos or at very least when I saw he wasn't going to let me tour.

Gordon Stoker Passed Away aged 88. Very sadly Jordanaire Gordon Stoker died this week, after a lengthy illness, at his home yesterday on March 27th.
The Jordanaires originated in Missouri but came to Nashville, where they backed Red Foley on a segment of the Grand Ol Opry called the "Prince Albert Show".
Gordon Stoker joined the Jordanaires as their piano player, but soon became their tenor vocalist.
The quartet then developed a national audience after performing on the Opry and the nationally syndicated show, "Eddy Arnold Time."
Stoker has noted, "Elvis was attracted to the Jordanaires sound as he he'd heard us sing those spirituals. We were working with Eddy Arnold and we went to the Ellis Auditorium in Memphis to do a show. Elvis came back behind the stage to meet us, not to meet Eddy. Elvis said, 'Man, let's sing some of those spirituals.' So, we got to singing with him in the room. That's when he said, 'If I ever get a major recording contract, I want you guys to work with me.' He was on the Sun label at that time. We didn't think anything about it, we had been told that by a lot of people. It didn't mean anything at all. But, when RCA signed him in January of 1956 he asked for us."
The Jordanaires' impact on Presley's recordings should not be underestimated. Their smooth yet effervescent backgrounds made Elvis’ raw-boned rock’n’roll palatable to mainstream radio programmers. Elvis’ major hits such as 'Don't Be Cruel', 'Teddy Bear', 'Too Much' and 'Don't' exhibited the type of vocal interplay that Presley could not have achieved on his earlier recordings.

At Presley's request, the Jordanaires received billing on all his vinyl releases, a sign of respect that he didn't accord his band members.
On tour The King's delirious, screaming fans made it difficult for the group to hear the singer. As a result, Presley had the Jordanaires stand very close to him on stage. "We could also tell by the movement of his head or the movement of his body where he was in the song," explained Stoker. "But, we would be as close to him as we could possibly be. Elvis even wanted it that way in the studio. He always wanted us standing right behind him on those TV shows we did with him. Many times he'd step back on my toes. But you couldn't hear anything because of the screaming and hollering."
As a member of the Jordanaires, Stoker also performed with Patsy Cline on "Crazy", "I Fall to Pieces" and "Sweet Dreams," and with Ricky Nelson on "Traveling Man" and "Hello Mary Lou." The group provided backing vocals for Sissy Spacek in the 1980 bio-pic of Loretta Lynn, "Coal Miner's Daughter."
"He could play by ear," said John Rumble, historian at Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville. "Anything he could hear on the radio, he could play it."
The Jordanaires, who recorded many gospel albums on their own, were elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.
