MRS ‘Elvis - The First Engagements 1969-70’ new 3-CD Set: The MRS label will release a 3CD Deluxe set titled ‘Las Vegas International Presents Elvis - The First Engagements 1969-70’ on 7th May 2021.
This three CD set contains a selection of captivating performances drawn from Elvis’ first two engagements at the Las Vegas International in August 1969 and January thru February 1970.
For the first time ever, these soundboard recordings (formerly in mono) have been remastered, carefully restored, and remixed to true stereo with outstanding expertise using the most sophisticated technologies to achieve the best possible sound.
This technology is not available to the major record label industries and the tracks have NOT been electronically processed and nothing has been added to make these tracks to true stereo.
The accompanying 40-page booklet includes rare photographs and memorabilia taken during these engagements along with introductory notes.

Ann-Margret 79 gets Lifetime Achievement Award: The incredible Ann-Margret accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 24th Family Film Awards last week, with Julianne Hough presenting and performing a tribute
The 79-year-old performer / actress - photo right - was presented the award by Julianne Hough at the ceremony, held at the Universal City Hilton Hotel on Wednesday evening.
Ann-Margret was wearing an elegant full-length silver and black gown that barely covered her black shoes. The redhead was all smiles on the red carpet, rocking black-framed glasses and thick diamond earrings for the awards ceremony.
The multi-talented performer was honoured alongside 'Back to the Future' writer Bob Gale plus The Brady Bunch cast getting the Iconic Television Award and Michelle Yeoh receiving the Global Lifetime Achievement Award.
When Elvis and Ann-Margret met on the set of 1963's Viva Las Vegas sparks flew between them immediately - but their relationship wasn't meant to be for the long haul and Elvis and Ann-Margret broke up about a year after they met.

| Elvis and Priscilla married in 1967, just a week before Ann-Margret married Roger Smith.
However they stayed good friends often calling each other. In 1972 when Ann-Margret fell from a scaffold during a Lake Tahoe production number she and Smith insisting on flying her to L.A. where surgery repaired the serious damage to her face and which left her famous beauty intact.
A few months after her devastating fall she returned to the Las Vegas Hilton so she should make a comeback. At the time, Elvis was the headliner at the same hotel.
Ann-Margret noted, "I regarded Elvis's presence as an extra bonus, I was pleased to know he was nearby, and I hoped we could connect somehow."
Elvis met with her in her suite, "Elvis wanted to know all about the accident, my recovery. It was so easy for us to lapse into the closeness we'd always shared, but it was clear from some of Elvis' comments that he really missed having me in his life."

Book Review 'An A-Z of Elvis': Joe Shooman’s new book 'An A-Z of Elvis... Infrequently Asked Questions' is an offbeat look at various parts of the Elvis story.
As the author notes, "This isn’t your bog-standard rehash of the same old Elvis tropes, instead we decided to look for the weird and wonderful…"
The A-Z entries are a diverse, eclectic collection, from the well-known to the weird and controversial. Each entry is afforded a paragraph or two up to a page of interesting text, with many of the entries complemented by impressive contemporary, hand drawn, artwork.
Our review discovers that at times, there is an almost punk sensibility in the narrative as author Joe Shooman dredges the darkest recesses of the multi-layered Elvis story and occasionally assaults the reader’s conception of Elvis Presley reality....

'Elvis 68 Comeback Hagstrom V-2 Guitar' Auction hits US$500,000: The GWS 'Artifacts of Hollywood & Music' ended with all bids supposedly not reaching the set minimum - very strange if you check their website.
However Elvis' Comeback Hagstrom V-2 Guitar reached the max price of US$500,000.
This incredibly important artifact has is one of the most historically significant and iconic instruments of all time.
The guitar actually belonged to Al Casey who was asked to let Elvis use the guitar by the producers, as they thought it would look beautiful on camera and with the set.

'His Hand In Mine Sessions' FTD set OUT NOW: The first FTD announcement for 2021, another deluxe set in the on-going "complete" sessions series the 'His Hand In Mine Sessions' is OUT NOW.
This 8” deluxe 3-CD package features a 28-page booklet with an insightful essay, recording data, memorabilia and rare photos. The set has arrived at dealers and should be heading to fans soon.
EIN Note: Many collectors will be wondering what new takes are included that were not on the excellent and near complete FTD 'Classic Album' from 2006.
We can only find two or three officially unreleased outtakes in the tracklist, 'In My Father's House' (w/p Take 1) & Take 8 plus possibly 'Surrender' incomplete Take 4 where the ending was spliced to complete the master.

ELVIS Biopic filming Wraps: Elvis has left the (Queensland) building!
Austin Butler who plays Elvis in the new Baz Luhrmann ELVIS biopic headed back to the US after filming wrapped at the Australian studios
Shooting has now wrapped on the project in Queensland, and the Hollywood actor, 29, is heading home.
Last week the star left the QLD apartment block he called a home away from home, with the naturally blonde actor clearly still attached to the iconic subject matter of his latest project with Elvis' slicked back 'do still locked in place.
In order to play the King of Rock N Roll, the American actor enlisted the help of a Gold Coast trainer to replicate the late singer's build, and work on hip exercises to master Elvis' iconic moves.
Tom Hanks will also star as Elvis' notorious manager, Colonel Tom Parker.

The film is expected to be released in cinemas June 2022.

'On Stage with Elvis Presley' Mini-Review: The Backstage Stories of Elvis’ legendary TCB Band, as told to Stuart Coupe: This new book may be slimline but it offers many great stories/anecdotes.
You may have heard many of the stories recounted in this book before, but it is neat to have them all recorded in one release for easy reference. It is interesting that the author apparently spoke with James Burton, Ron(nie) Tutt, Glen D. Hardin, Jerry Scheff, and orchestra maestro, Joe Guercio, in Australia when Elvis The Concert toured “downunder” in 1999. Why it has taken two decades for those discussions to be published is puzzling.
Life on the road has its ups and downs, and the memories recorded in 'On Stage with Elvis Presley' hold the reader’s interest:
... For every member of the T.C.B. Band there’s no question that Elvis’
series of shows at Madison Square Garden in New York in 1972 was the
highlight of their time together as a band.
... “That was one of the highlights of my life,” recalls Joe. “We had The Sweet Inspirations and Jackie Kahane, but the audience didn’t want to hear any comedy. They wanted Elvis Presley and that was it, so they were heckling Jackie. It finally came to the second half of the show and I started the Theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey and you could feel the audience. I don’t think I’ll ever get that experience again. There was this huge rumble, rumble, rumble and by the time we hit a note where Elvis came out so many flash bulbs were going off from cameras that there were moments where it seemed like the entire Madison Square Garden was lit up It was like someone had turned up the house lights, but it was just the blare from flashbulbs.”

... “What stands out about the concerts were the incredible highs and lows,” he says. “Elvis was a very spontaneous performer so you would have these incredible nights where it was just roaring. People were packed to the ceilings and were responding wonderfully, and they’d get the show of their life”……

Elliot Gould Talks Elvis: US actor Elliott Gould is now 81 and has been telling the story for decades but in 2021 it still delights him.
Gould is best known for his leading roles in Robert Altman films M*A*S*H and The Long Goodbye. He also featured in TV sitcom 'Friends' and in the recent "Ocean's" film series.
And after more than half a century in Hollywood, in which he went from leading man to exile and, eventually, fixture, Gould could fill days, not just hours, with his stories. Even without mentioning his eight-year marriage to Barbra Streisand.
Gould is "locked-down" but happy to tell the story of his life. Gould admits his thinking is “not always linear”. Some memories take time to retrieve: “I flush it out as we’re talking.”
But once they emerge, they are precise, both in detail and dialogue, such as his “little date” with Elvis.
Back in the 70s, Gould asked to meet Elvis in his Las Vegas dressing room.
Gould recalls that they were at close quarters made all the more so by the conspicuous, gilded .45 automatic in Elvis’s belt and the watchful presence of his manager, Tom “The Colonel” Parker, as well as the singer’s father, Vernon.

It was clear to Gould that they would not let their “cash cow” out of their sight and he said so, urging Presley to “leave ‘ELVIS’ here and come out, be a free spirit”.
“Elvis says to me, with his gold gun in his belt: ‘You’re crazy, man.’ I said: ‘Elvis, I ain’t crazy. I’m scared, just like you.’”
Gould now says that, “I see life as a circle. Sometimes, when people ask me: ‘How’s it going?’ I enjoy saying: ‘It’s going round.’ It always goes around.”

New conspiracy book, 'Brando on Elvis In His Own Words': In 2018, author Gary Lindberg released Letters From Elvis, one of the most unbelievable and improbable releases with an Elvis theme. Among other things, Lindberg claimed that Elvis was best buddies with Marlon Brando and Harry Belafonte, Vernon Presley was not Elvis’ biological father (this was Virgil Presley!), and shockingly, that Elvis had been sexually abused by a gang of thugs hired to attack him by film director, Sam Katzman. The basis for the author’s claims are a series of letters allegedly written by the celebrities to spiritual adviser, Carmen Montez. Lindberg’s 2018 book continues to cause considerable controversy within some Elvis social media groups and the author has even received death threats.
Lindberg is back in 2021 with a new book (again based on the letters to Ms Montez), 'Brando on Elvis: In His Own Words.' The publisher pr states:

Book Review - 'ELVIS UK3': Recently published 'ELVIS UK3' The Ultimate Guide to Elvis Presley's British CD Releases 1983-2005' by John Townson and Gordon Minto comprises 1400 pages with over a million words plus 4,000 plus illustrations.
This examination of Elvis’ British releases is an incredibly detailed narrative and visual record of his CD releases in the UK from 1983 to 2005.
The first Elvis CD, 'The Legend' (3CD), was released in the UK in December 1983. Reflecting the fledgling nature of the format, UK fans had to wait another 12 months until the release of not one, but three, Elvis albums, in December 1984. By that time, the flood gates for the CD medium were starting to strain.
As with the authors’ earlier two volumes on Elvis UK vinyl releases, the information in Elvis UK3 is exhaustive.
To say that Elvis UK3 was well-researched would be a serious understatement. There is so much information in this book that it is difficult to comprehensively review it all. While many collectors will be most interested in the technical details for each entry, the author’s narrative is excellent.
Released using the flipbook format EIN tested Elvis UK3 on four platforms - a 28” computer monitor, 14” tablet, iPad 8 and a 6.5” android mobile phone.

MRS 'Summer Festival 1970: The Rehearsals' In UK Charts; Elvis is back in the UK charts with the MRS 3CD Deluxe set ‘SUMMER FESTIVAL 1970 – THE REHEARSALS’ that was released on 12th March 2021.
The CDs contain rehearsal highlights from one of the most memorable periods in Elvis’ career - his captivating performances at The International Hotel Las Vegas in the summer of 1970. These truly historical recordings, remastered and restored capture the raw and early development of songs that were performed weeks later in Las Vegas. The accompanying 40-page booklet includes rare photographs taken at some of these rehearsal sessions.
As usual MRS has spared no expense in our remastering techniques. For the first time ever all, the tracks listed have had repairs and restorations having now the same mastering techniques, used on such recent MRS releases such as ‘Made in Germany’ and ‘Such a Night in Pearl Harbor’.

Bob Williams Memphis photographer has died: Bob Williams, a longtime photographer with the Memphis Commercial Appeal who enthusiastically chronicled the career of Elvis Presley, capturing the emerging King of Rock and Roll in what would become some of the singer's most iconic poses and most revealing unguarded moments, has died. He was 96.
Williams captured some key moments in Memphis history but is best known for his Elvis portraits.
He was among the first photographers to take an interest in the future superstar, shooting young Elvis and gaining the trust and friendship of the boy's parents, Vernon and Gladys Presley, when the family still lived at 1414 Getwell.
“He got to be very good friends with the Presleys" said his daughter. "He would go and basically hang out. He took pictures of Elvis that are now iconic. Elvis in front of the gates of Graceland the day they were installed, before they were even painted. Elvis with his Rolls-Royce."
Some of Williams' memorable Presley pictures captured the singer in humorous, off-the-cuff situations. In an often-reproduced 1956 image, the King stares into Williams' lens as he becomes a smooch sandwich, a local beauty queen kissing each cheek.
William’s archive of Elvis-related photographs includes close to 3,000 images. He was working on a book of his stunning images when he died which should be published later this year.

'The Best Use of Elvis Music in Recent Movies': In the first two decades after his untimely death it was rare to hear an Elvis song in a new feature film - and certainly not in a TV advert.
EPE / BMG seemed reluctant to licence Elvis' music which is strange considering the amount of sub-standard Elvis products they were pumping out to fans. But everything changed in 2002 with ‘ALLC' hitting number one all around the world .
So with Baz Luhrmann's ELVIS biopic in production it's a good time to revisit some of the best use of Elvis music in recent movies.
Film producers have discovered that using ELVIS in recent movie soundtracks can be a powerful and positive idea.
From the cartoon Lilo & Stitch to the blockbuster Blade Runner 2049 and the Elton John biopic Rocketman, the use of Elvis songs in the soundtrack can add that something special.

"Elvis In Concert 77, My name is Wayne Newton" BluRay: The publicity notes.. The independent label Planitis-Entertainment announces the release of the blu-ray "Elvis In Concert 77, My name is Wayne Newton". The creators of this blu-ray have collected all the images, interviews with Vernon (in 1977), all the live songs from June 19 and 21 from Omaha, NB, and Rapid City, SD, all the intros as well as the entirety of the presentation of the group of musicians by Elvis in one show, in one unique show.
A lot of remastering work from various non-copyrighted original (CBS) tapes was done frame by frame with DX Technique™ and for the first time the sound was reworked in Dolby Digital True HD. All regions, 26 live songs, play time 140 minutes.
EIN note.. The 'In Concert' footage was recorded in 1977 on old U-matic videotape. The format is well below BluRay quality and would not even be DVD quality. The cover design hardly indicates a quality product. Buyer Beware, please check video quality before purchase.

'Georgia Elvis Festival' rescheduled to September: News that due to the ongoing CV19 troubles, the Georgia Tribute Festival has rescheduled its traditional March date. It will now be held September 16 > 19 2021 at the Ritz Theatre in downtown Brunswick.
This September join Elvis fans at the quaint seaside community of Brunswick, Georgia. It’s a weekend like none before as the 2021 Georgia Tribute Festival pays tribute to the King in all his glory. As a special celebration of the 65th anniversary of the King's breakout year the Tribute Festival will feature numerous artists paying homage to Elvis Presley. Among performers will be Cody Ray Slaughter, Di Light, Austin Irby and Travis Powell.

Book Review – 'Elvis 1956 July 5 to July 31 (Memphis-Biloxi-New Orleans)': Paul Belard’s latest photobook is another strong release. Focusing on a month in 1956 when Elvis actually got to take vacation.
Starting on July 5, 1956 (the day after Elvis’ triumphant concert at Russwood Park in Memphis - this will be covered in another volume), the hundreds of photos (many candid shots) show a different side to Elvis than normally associated with books about Elvis during the height of Presleymania.
.. July 1956, Elvis days off were spent deep sea fishing and relaxing before Elvis returned to Memphis on the 20th, where photographer, Lloyd Shearer, was on hand to take a slew of photos of Elvis around the city. At the end of the month Elvis returned to Biloxi....
The images are nicely complemented by a diverse and fascinating collection of archival materials.

Elvis Presley 1968 Comeback Special Hagstrom V-2 Guitar (Exhibited in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum W/Extensive Documentation) - This incredibly important artifact has is one of the most historically significant and iconic instruments of all time. This incredible piece of rock n' roll history is the red Hagstrom Viking II show guitar that was played by Elvis Presley in his iconic the "1968 Comeback Special." The special Singer Presents... Elvis, aired on NBC on December 3, 1968 and marked Elvis' return to live performance after seven years during which his career was centered on the movie business. The special was transformed by Steve Binder and producer Bob Finkel to create a concert that would be current and appeal to a younger audience. Elvis played this guitar in several segments of the show, and is on the cover of the RCA album, From Elvis in Memphis.

This guitar belonged to Al Casey, a wonderful musician in his own right, who performed in the backing band during the special. According to the accompanying letter from Casey, he was asked to let Elvis use the guitar by the producers, as they thought it would look beautiful on camera and with the set. Elvis used the guitar for the opening segment as well as during one of the live "stand-up" segments. The guitar comes with a notarized letter of authenticity from Al Casey, a second letter of authenticity from Casey, a notarized statement from Hal Blaine who was the drummer on the 68' Comeback Special and a letter from legendary producer Bones Howe, who was the music producer on the special.
The lot will also include several photographs of Elvis during the filming of the special, including three negatives, and various loan paperwork from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, at which this guitar was exhibited as part of an Elvis Presley exhibit.
This stunning piece of history has not been offered to the public for over 25 years, and is truly a must have for any serious Elvis Presley collection.

Eddie Youngblood has died: Sadly, one of Australia’s most popular Elvis tribute artists has died, struck down by lung cancer. Eddie Youngblood will be a name very familiar to many Australia and New Zealand fans.
Eddie was one of Australia’s original ETAs coming onto the scene not long after the other Elvis tribute pioneers, El Gamble and Roy Hawkins. Eddie enjoyed a long career doing both his Elvis tribute show and branching out for a period into country music. He was also the first feature concert artist at the Parkes Elvis Festival, performing there in 1993, 1994 and 1995. Eddie had a lot of time for the fans and would stay long after his show had finished signing autographs and talking about Elvis and music.
Eddie Youngblood was born in the Victorian bush town of Apollo Bay. After moving around Victoria for several years due to his father's occupation, the family moved to Townsville, Qld, the complete extremity in climates, but this didn't change the country boy. During his teen years, Eddie got his first taste of showbiz by entering a High School talent show. He didn't win the judges' award but won the audience prize of $10.00 by an overwhelming vote. This small success, combined with playing in local bands, gave Eddie the urge to further his career in the big smoke - Sydney.
After serving his apprenticeship in talent quests, Eddie formed a show around the music of his idol Elvis Presley. Eddie was Australia’s multi award winning Elvis tribute artist - and with good reason! |

From the Golden to the Vegas years, he executed a dynamic performance so full of energy, he left no choice for the audience but to sweat! He had style, charm, good looks and presented his shows in a tasteful, very professional manner.
The recipient of two “MO” awards, which is the highest entertainment award in Australia & the Daily Telegraph Readers' "Favourite Entertainer" award, Eddie appeared in three major TV variety shows, had three top selling albums, and was nominated for awards for his live theatre role of “Pharoah” in the stage production of “Joseph & His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat”.
He believed in what he did, believed in the legacy Elvis left us, and that Elvis’ music should be presented in the most respectful, honest way possible.

Elvis The King of the Rings Volume 1 (Paul Belard): Hot on the heels of Elvis July 1956 July 5 to July 31 Memphis-Biloxi-New Orleans (EIN’s review will be published next week), prolific photo-journal publisher, Paul Belard will shortly release, Elvis King of the Rings Volume 1.
The book description: Elvis liked expensive things: cars, motorcycles, clothes, and jewelry. His jewels befitted a king. He wore sumptuous pendants hung on heavy gold chains; huge lavish rings dripping of rubies, sapphires, lapis lazuli, and emeralds; bracelets of gold and precious gems. Like Elvis himself, they were at times dazzlingly tasteful and things of beauty, and at other times flashy, ostentatious, in your face.
The singer Robert Goulet described Elvis’ penchant for generosity: “I remember once we sat together backstage for two hours. And he was a charming, delightful man. And at one point I said, “That’s a beautiful ring you have there.” He said, “You like it?” I said, “It’s beautiful!” He took it off his hand and put it on mine. He gave me his ring.”
Elvis’ entourage had this line down pat: “Elvis, this ring is beautiful.” And Elvis would remove it from his finger and give it away. Was he taken advantage of? The answer is yes, as quite a few of the rings that show up at auctions were gifted to members of his coterie.

Elvis’ penchant to give things away is sometimes difficult to understand, even taking in the fact that Elvis was not materialistic. When he was in Las Vegas, he saw a doctor whose name was Elias Ghanem. Elvis lavished upon him a $32,000 Stutz car, a Mercedes, watches, rings, including the one he wore in Aloha from Hawaii.
A list of the gifts to this individual comes to a staggering total more than fifty items. The value of the item was of no concern to Elvis. The horseshoe ring he wore in Aloha from Hawaii eventually sold at auction in 2017 for $204,800.
EIN has seen an advanced draft of this 250 page book, and the hundreds of full-color images and supporting background text for each of the rings featured, is visually and narratively impressive. And because Elvis bought so many rings during his life, there will be a second volume!

'Summer Festival 1970: The Rehearsals' New MRS set Preview Copy: MRS have announced a 3CD Deluxe set titled ‘SUMMER FESTIVAL 1970 – THE REHEARSALS’ to be released on 12th March 2021, but PREVIEW copies have already sneaked out!
The CDs contain rehearsal highlights from one of the most memorable periods in Elvis’ career - his captivating performances at The International Hotel Las Vegas in the summer of 1970. These truly historical recordings, remastered and restored capture the raw and early development of songs that were performed weeks later in Las Vegas. The accompanying 40-page booklet includes rare photographs taken at some of these rehearsal sessions.
As usual MRS has spared no expense in our remastering techniques. For the first time ever all, the tracks listed have had repairs and restorations having now the same mastering techniques, used on such recent MRS releases such as ‘Made in Germany’ and ‘Such a Night in Pearl Harbor’. A sample sound of this will circulate on forums within days of this announcement.
The 180g 3LP Gatefold version will be announced soon.

Australian ETA, Eddie Youngblood has died: One of Australia’s best / greatest Elvis impersonators (he didn’t really like the term ETA), Eddie Youngblood has passed away aged 65.
EIN will feature a substantive news item soon.
Eddie Youngblood was there performing the main Elvis tribute concert at the first Parkes Elvis Festival in 1993, the largest Elvis birthday festival in the world.
Eddie Youngblood also performed as Elvis at the Australian 1991 NRL Grand Final.

Feel like you were in the audience to see the greatest singer of all time... Elvis on stage during his early Las Vegas shows was full of energy and at his best vocally and physically. As Robert Hilburn noted in his LA Times review of Presley’s 1970 winter season in Las Vegas, “Elvis … has done what once seemed impossible. He has become king on his own terms.”

'Elvis '68 Comeback' Book Re-Publish for 2022: With Baz Luhrmann's ELVIS biopic due to shake up the Elvis marketing world next year, Thunder Bay Press is re-publishing Steve Binder's 'Elvis '68 Comeback' and this time including a foreword by Baz Luhrmann.

Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Presley: Referring to our news item last week, there is no doubt that Bruce Springsteen's key influence was ELVIS.
EIN contributor Dennis Laverty has closely examined the relationship between the two megastars in his documentary 'If I Can Dream: The Influence of Elvis on Bruce.'
Laverty cleverly uses concert footage and previously released interview segments with Springsteen and various rock experts to show just how important Presley was to Springsteen.
It all started with Presley’s first appearance on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' in 1956 “The revolution has been televised!! Elvis was the hip-shaking human earthquake”. It didn’t matter that CBS cameramen tried to keep Elvis respectable by shooting his performance from the waist up. For Springsteen, Elvis represented a cultural change and moment for the USA at that time. |

Springsteen says, “He was a showman, an entertainer, an imaginer of worlds, an unbelievable success, and embarrassing failure and a fount of modern actions and ideas. Ideas that would soon change the shape and future of the nation. Ideas whose time had come. - Everything starts and ends with Elvis.”
Springsteen has written a song for Elvis (“Fire”) and a song about him (“Johnny Bye-Bye”). He has covered many Elvis songs in concert, and even invited an Elvis impersonator onstage with him in Philadelphia (dubbing him “The Philly Elvis”).
Dennis Laverty’s 75-minute film covers also all of this and includes lots of rarely seen, electrifying concert performances.
It also explores the famous 1975 jumping-the-wall incident at Graceland, the Presley concerts that Springsteen saw in person, and interesting tangents such as Patti Scialfa’s song “Looking for Elvis” and the reverence that Springsteen associates Jon Landau and author Dave Marsh have for Presley.

ELVIS on Mars: Elvis loved the excitement of outta-space and rocket-flights to the moon. With the Perseverance rocket and Rover Lander arriving and landing on planet Mars, there is life - and ELVIS - on Mars!
Elvis Presley was the most significant name (he had his own boarding pass) to get onto the rocket Perseverance (great name for Elvis' flight) that launched in July 2020 - and "The Prince From Another Planet" is finally there!

Last year NASA asked people to add their names to the computer chip that would be sent on the Perseverance Rocket. The chip was put on the Rover Lander that touched-down on planet Mars February 18, 2021.
Elvis would have wanted to go. He followed NASA flights from the early 60's and so fans added his name.
Above is the picture of Elvis 'official' NASA boarding pass. And Elvis' name is on the chip for others to find 10's of millions of years from now.
During the filming of MGM's 'On Tour' Elvis asks about the Apollo 16 launch on April 16, 1972, "is the NASA rocket launched?"
Space flights were indeed one of his interests.

The Making of Pickwick's 'Frankie & Johnny': Elvis author and EIN contributor Thomas Melin has posted a neat 'Insiders' article about the "The Making of Frankie & Johnny".
The 1976 Pickwick reissue of 'Frankie & Johnny' was one of the strangest budget compilations ever released.
Fans may have wondered how this ludicrous idea came about, and Thomas Melin may just have the answer.
As the Pickwick marketing executive (stupidly) noted, “Even if we can’t make it sound contemporary, we can always give it a more modern look. Put an Elvis LIVE shot on the front and it might sell like hotcakes."

Graceland plans in-person events during Elvis Week: Publicity is ramping up with media reporting that 'Elvis Presley's Graceland is preparing to host visitors and offer in-person activities during the annual Elvis Week this summer in Memphis, Tennessee.'
On the 44th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death, fans will get to celebrate the musician once again at the annual Elvis Week event in Memphis, Tennessee.
Presley's Graceland is preparing to host visitors and offer in-person events for Elvis Week from Aug. 11 through Aug. 17. Organizers said public health protocols will be in place, including the requirement of masks, temperature screenings and socially distanced seating.
The event will feature appearances by celebrities and musicians, live concerts, panel discussions, parties, bus excursions and the Elvis tribute artist contest. The keystone event, once again, will be a candlelight vigil as fans visit his grave.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Elvis Week events were mostly held online last year.

(Book Review) The Jewish World of Elvis Presley (Roselle Kline Chartock): The latest Elvis related book by an academic draws attention to an issue many fans will have been unaware of – the strong affinity Elvis had with Jews and how it influenced his life. (Book Review): Kid of the King (Liz Presley): The world knows Lisa Marie Presley to be the only child of Elvis and Priscilla. In this new book, Liz Presley claims to be the “older sibling” of Lisa Marie - a claim that will be met with derision and disbelief by most fans.
EIN’s Nigel Patterson offers his views on Ms Presley’s claim and the author’s wider story which traverses her struggles with gender identity (Liz was born ‘David’), a troubled upbringing, becoming successful in business, fulfilling her dream to be a singer, and, most importantly, finding “herself” and her “real family”. Regardless of what readers think of the author’s claim, EIN’s Nigel Patterson found that there is an important message reflected in Kid of the King.

Luhrmann’s ELVIS movie now for 2022 release: Baz Luhrmann’s ELVIS biopic, now currently in production in Australia, has moved its official release date from November 5, 2021 to June 3, 2022.
The movie will explore the life and music of Elvis ( Austin Butler), seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks.
The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America.
Olivia DeJonge, Gary Clark, Jr., Yola, Shonka Dukureh, Shannon Sanders, Lenesha Randolph, Jordan Holland, Kelvin Harrison Jr. , Alton Mason also star.
Australia's David Wenham will play TV director Steve Binder. (Interview) Brandon Yip (author of Elvis Presley “All Shook Up” in Canada): Elvis only performed outside the USA on five occasions – all shows in Canada in 1957. Canadian born and bred writer and author, Brandon Yip, formed an obsession about Elvis’ Canadian concerts.
Dissatisfied with the information he had read about the shows, particularly Elvis’ final Canadian performance in Vancouver, Brandon went in search of more information, tracking down and interviewing people who were lucky enough to see Elvis “live” in Canada.
The result of his research is his new book, Elvis Presley “All Shook Up” in Canada. It includes first-hand accounts by fans and legendary Canadian radio DJ, Red Robinson.
Brandon recently took time out to talk with EIN’s Nigel Patterson about his book and what he found.

(Book Review) Inventing Elvis – An American Icon in a Cold War World (Mathias Haeussler): The latest academic examination of the Elvis Presley story explores his relationship in the context of a rising trans-national youth culture and Cold War politics. Assistant Professor Mathias Haeussler has written a powerful account of how Elvis’ role in each of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s was an evolutionary one, reflecting the broader socio-cultural and political changes of each decade.
The subject matter is diverse, ranging from Elvis’ image as a threat to the morals of youth in the 1950s (in a sense mirroring the threat of communism), to the cultural imperialism reflected his 1960s movies (while American culture and political influence was spreading globally), and Elvis’ decline in the 1970s (at a time when America was reeling from its own excesses including the disastrous Vietnam War).

‘From Elvis in Nashville’ Box-set EIN In-Depth Review:
A 4CD collection presenting the definitive chronicle of Elvis' 1970 marathon sessions with the "Nashville Cats".
Recorded live in RCA's Studio B over the course of an epic five day run in June 1970 now, for the first time, the sessions are presented in pristine audio, newly mixed by acclaimed engineer Matt Ross-Spang without the added overdubs appearing on earlier releases.
Elvis’ 1970 Nashville session was very different from the previous Memphis sessions or even Elvis’ later sessions. Nashville was a real mix of Elvis recording RCA supplied demos along with one-take spontaneous favourites Elvis threw into the mix.

Focusing on Elvis’ film career in France it is a wonderfully expressive record of its subject and offers a neatly balanced package between its narrative, visual, archival and audio elements.

(Book Review) Destined to Die Young (Sally Hoedel): Could Elvis’ death at the young age of 42 have been avoided? This question is answered in Sally Hoedel’s thought provoking book, Destined to Die Young.
The book is the result of exhaustive research by the author who found a key factor which was to affect Elvis throughout his life – one which meant that regardless of his diet and overuse of prescription medication, he was destined to die young. The narrative is full and colorful, and its depth of detail reflects the extent of research undertaken by the author.
In her introduction, the author establishes an important context for Elvis’ longevity (or lack of longevity) and health issues, this being his family tree.... Hoedel identifies the genetic disorder as Antitrypsin Deficiency, a condition which can result in lung and/or liver disease. In this respect, her discussion of the life and death of Gladys Presley is thought provoking..

(Book Review) From Elvis in Memphis (Eric Wolfson): The 150th volume in the popular Bloomsbury Academic 33 1/3 series of music history and criticism books is Eric Wolfson’s From Elvis in Memphis (due out on 12 November).
EIN’s Nigel Patterson recently sat down and submerged himself in what is the first (and long overdue) extensive examination of any Elvis album.
What Nigel found was a deeply considered, strongly written, and thought provoking analysis of what many regard as Elvis’ finest album.

Folk singer Arlo Guthrie (son of legend Woody Guthrie) tells a truly wonderful life-affirming story of singing Elvis' 'Can't Help Falling In Love With You' at a European folk festival, to 30,000 folk music lovers!
He jokes about choosing a song made popular by 'The King of Folk Singers' Elvis Presley.
Arlo Guthrie teases fellow musician Pete Seeger about him being a core "Folkie" and exactly how Elvis' music fits into the whole equation.

'ELVIS In The 2010s' A Personal Review of the Past Decade: Rather like Elvis’s own career, each decade since Elvis’s death appears to have had a theme or identity of its own. Clearly the late 1970s were difficult for RCA as they struggled to find the right direction with which to take their posthumous releases, and so it was the 1980s that was the decade when the company slowly but surely learned how to look back at Elvis's legacy and start to make some sense of it.
The 1990s were when that reached a peak, with the decades boxed sets, and the Elvis in the 90s series, thus bringing virtually the whole catalogue back into print in a coherent way.
The 2000s were when errors of judgement at retail level started to occur (despite huge successes like Elv1s), but also when FTD came into its own and flourished.
And so what will we make of Elvis releases of the 2010s when we look back on them from the future?

'What was Elvis searching for?' EIN Spotlight: The question is raised – but never answered – in the title of HBO’s recent absorbing, imperfect documentary 'Elvis Presley: The Searcher'.
At the start it seems clear what the teenage Elvis was searching for – an escape from the oblivion of poverty in the American South. Yet his quest was cultural as well as financial.
Later Elvis read obsessively, seeking out such books as The Impersonal Life, Joseph Brenner’s guide to self-discovery and Kahil Gibran’s book of fables, The Prophet. In his copy of Gibran’s tome, Elvis jotted down the line: “A singer can sing his songs but he must have an ear to receive the song”.
So what exactly was Elvis searching for? In this fascinating EIN Spotlight respected author Paul Simpson takes a close look at this all important question which, for some reason, was basically ignored in the recent HBO documentary..

The VINYL Boom: Over 7.6 million vinyl LPs were sold in the USA during the first half of 2018, a 20% increase from the previous year, while in Australia vinyl sales increased by $3 million, the same increase of 20%. In the same period CD sales however dropped by 15%.
Elvis vinyl is still selling very nicely with ‘ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits’ recently in the UK Top ten VINYL charts.

‘ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits’ on GOLD Vinyl: ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits was re-released by Sony Music on GOLD Vinyl on 12 October. UK's Entertainment-Focus have posted this cute review.
... What is there to say about Elvis Presley that hasn’t already been said?
It may be 41 years since the icon died tragically at only 42 years old but his music continues to live on, and likely will forever. It’s actually mind-blowing to think that his music has survived for almost as long as he was alive. In 2002 Sony Music released a new greatest hits collection titled ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits, which dominated charts across the world and sold millions and millions of copies. 16 years on from its original release, ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits has been reissued on 2LP vinyl.
Taking inspiration from the album cover, the release has been pressed on gold vinyl making the whole package feel very special.
Presley was an incredibly prolific artist so getting this collection down to 31 tracks was no easy feat. It also includes the ALLC Junkie XL remix.
What was achieved with ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits though, is a

collection that gives you all the highlights you need from The King’s career to showcase the incredible impact he had on music. The album opens with Heartbreak Hotel and there isn’t a single filler track here.
It’s actually near impossible to pick out highlights across the 2LPs because every single one of these songs is a classic.
Of course no Elvis collection would be complete without Suspicious Minds and that track is near the end of the track listing on the final side.
The release features the artwork from the original 2002 release and it’s a beautiful, high-quality gatefold. I mentioned earlier about the gold vinyl but what I’ve not commented on yet is the sound. The CD version was a little patchy given that the songs were all recorded at different times. It’s not as noticeable on the vinyl release and the quality is crystal clear. The warm crackle of vinyl adds to the overall feel too.
ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits is a must-have release for any Elvis Presley fan. While he had plenty of great songs that aren’t featured here, this collection truly is the definitive one to own. There’s not a single bad song here and it’s lengthy enough to give you value for money. The whole vinyl package is fantastic and it looks as good as it sounds.
They don’t make artists like Elvis anymore and they probably never will again.

'ELVIS ON TOUR - 45th Anniversary Deluxe Edition' IN-Depth Review: Amiga International's long awaited LIMITED-EDITION boxset featuring 9-CD’s, all remastered, of all known recordings made for the Golden Globe Award-winning concert documentary ELVIS ON TOUR is OUT NOW. It includes the premiere of the complete rehearsal recorded in Buffalo, NY on April 5, 1972, with three previously unreleased performances.

UPDATED - Trying To Get To You: The Truth Behind The Elvis And Roy Orbison Show Rumours: For decades there has always been an unsubstantiated rumour that Elvis Presley appeared as a guest on Roy Orbison's TV show on the local station KOSA.
The Roy Orbison website notes that both Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley performed on Roy’s TV show in late 1955.
Respected author Colin Escott wrote in his book Good Rockin’ Tonight about a kinescope of Elvis on the Roy Orbison TV show actually existing.
Some keen Elvis fans have said that they have seen this very kinescope at Elvis Week shows back in the 80s.
But like infamous Pied Piper of Cleveland does this footage really exist and is there any real proof that Elvis did appear on the Roy Orbison TV show?
Shane Brown (author of Reconsider Baby: Elvis: A Listener's Guide) has done an immense amount of investigation and thinks he has found the answer.

Mindi Miller Interview with EIN: Mindi Miller was a working actress when she met Elvis in early 1975. She was interested in karate (she performed all her own movie stunts), exploring spirituality and the Bible and so they had a lot in common.
Mindi Miller and Elvis bonded over their common interests and soon afterwards he asked her to go on tour with him in April 1975.
She stayed friends with Elvis through the years - along with members of the 'Memphis Mafia' - and attended his funeral.

'Marty Lacker: A Life Well-Lived' & Elvis at American Studio's Interview: It was with immense sadness that last month EIN had to report on the death of our great friend - and a true friend to Elvis - Marty Lacker. We will miss him dearly.
Marty is well-known as one of the key members of the Memphis Mafia and also co-Best Man at Elvis' wedding. He was known for both his honesty and being forthright with his opinions. He was the only member of the Memphis Mafia who still watched and commented on recent Elvis News. He had no issue with holding people to account (especially ones who would inflate their importance within Elvis' legacy) and would regularly ask EIN to add his comments or to correct any inaccuracy.
Elvis fans often ask about Marty Lacker's background, how he came to meet Elvis, as well as his involvement in the music industry outside of working for The King.

UPDATED - 'Way Down In The Jungle Room' EIN Review: Released for August 2016 this SONY Legacy pack celebrates the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ last recording sessions which took place in Graceland’s Jungle Room.
The publicity noted the sessions “have been newly mixed by Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording” and “includes both outtakes and in-the-studio dialog, providing a ‘fly-on-the-wall experience’ of what the sessions were like".
Elvis' original 76/77 albums were fairly uninspired collections (bar a few fine singles) and on the original LPs it was almost impossible to glimpse any sign of creative input from Elvis through the syrupy overdubs. It wasn't until the release of FTD’s magnificent ‘The Jungle Room Sessions’ that many fans began to understand the raw emotion, close camaraderie and Elvis’ personal feelings that were revealed by these intimate Graceland sessions.
To produce that same kind of revelation for the 'General Public' would be a very tricky project but that is exactly what the new legacy team has done - and to great effect.

Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage!
The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
