Dee Stanley Not Long For This World: Dee's son Billy Stanley has posted today that his Mother's condition has seriously deteriorated, although just 2 days ago it seemed that she might recover. The bad news today is .. "Dee's condition is getting worst by the hour... She didn't recognize me today, when I was called in to see her... I also had to make the hardest decision I ever made, but I remember mom's wishes... If anything happens, she is not to be kept alive by machines... I had to come home, to eat, then I'm going back to the hospital to say good bye to my mom... The doctor will call when she passes away.... "
Vernon Presley married Davada (Dee) Elliot Stanley on July 3, 1960. Elvis always had a close relationship with his father but when his mother died in 1958, his father then started dating a married woman named Dee Stanley. Elvis didn’t care for Dee thinking that it was too soon after Gladys' death for his father to be dating again. When Vernon and Dee Stanley married in July 1960 Elvis did not attend the ceremony.

New Book by George Hill: A new book by Elvis photographer George Hill commemorating the 40th anniv of the July 1, 1973, Nashville performance.
He notes, "Elvis performed in Nashville, only twice during his touring years of the 1970's. Both concerts were held on Sunday, July 1, 1973. This new book with photos from photographer George Hill commemorates these performances on their 40th Anniversary.
George's long time friend from Jr. High School, and fellow Elvis concert photographer, Gerald Berry, lived in Nashville at the time and he got their tickets. This was the tour where Elvis performed 5 SOLD OUT shows at the Omni in Atlanta, GA. When the tour schedule came out, Nashville was on the list. That's how they found out that Elvis was coming to town!
"The Auditorium in Nashville was small", George Hill remembers. "It held only 9,000 people, and it was LOUD. During the first show, he had some folks in Nashville that he wanted to thank. The only name I remember for sure was Chet Atkins. He read the list of names from a sheet of paper that he had. Then he sang FADED LOVE, from the Elvis Country Album, and dedicated it to them."

Collingwood Elvis Festival Packed with Fans: This weekend's Collingwood Elvis Festival is rocking with Elvis artists and fans - and that is good news for businesses. People with lawn chairs started gathering on Collingwood’s main street early Friday morning for the kick-off of this year’s Elvis festival. But some say getting here in the morning isn’t soon enough to get a spot close to the stage.
This is the 19th consecutive year Collingwood has hosted the event that features more than 100 tribute artists from all over the world performing at several venues in the region.
“The love for Elvis is just as strong here as it is in Memphis, my mind is being blown. For me what this is doing for my heart is telling me that Elvis truly was the greatest performer that ever lived,” said Memphis Jones.
Some tribute artists look and sound more like the King than others but they all add to the atmosphere.
“People are coming back, I have customers that were here last year and they keep coming back so I knew we are doing something right,” said Jim Meridis from The Old Red Hen restaurant.
The Collingwood Elvis Festival runs July 25 to 28th.

2013 Jaycees Winner Beau Davidson talks about Elvis: In 1971, Elvis received what became his proudest achievement when he was named among the Jaycees Ten Outstanding Young Men. Elvis fan and Memphis performer/songwriter Beau Davidson recently stopped by Graceland to place his own Ten Outstanding Young Americans award directly beside his idol's.
Scientists, inventors, performers, film makers, future Presidents have been selected for this award over the years. Davidson was honored for his accomplishments in the entertainment and political arenas, including his appointment to The Young Americans Coalition.
For Elvis, who grew up poor and faced extreme criticism, this was one of his proudest moments. He had finally achieved acceptance, recognition, and respect for his work. Elvis was known to carry his Jaycees award around with him everywhere and this is the only award

for which he accepted in person.
Go HERE for the cute YouTube video with Beau Davidson showing Elvis' award and how worn it became.

'Turning Night Into Daytime' New Import CD: Rainbow Records proudly presents a new CD release called “Turning Night Into Daytime” , featuring Elvis Presley´s complete performance of August 31, 1973 (Midnight Show) at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel. This show has not been released on CD before and will be presented in very good sound for an audience recording. The recording has been taken from the original cassette tape - as recorded by a “Super-Fan” from the UK who was present at this particular show.
Elvis seems to have a good time at this show and he delivers a real fine choice of songs. There are quite a few highlights to discover: a strong “Brigde Over Troubled Water”, a rather “early in the set” sung “Release Me”, a great “An American Trilogy” and a rather “rare for 73” sung “Funny How Time Slips Away”. Also note that this recording is complete, only missing the “2001” theme.
Rainbow Records sat this release is limited to 300 copies only, so be sure to reserve your copy at your local dealer!
To be released August 16, 2013

Bruno Mars on Elvis, Hendrix & more: At 27 the Hawaiian-born pop phenomenon Bruno Mars has a sound knowledge of more than 50 years worth of rock, R&B, hip-hop and other styles that provide the foundation for his old-school-meets-contemporary sonic synthesis. His studies have clearly paid off. His 2010 debut album, “Doo-Wops & Hooligans,” has sold 6 million copies worldwide, his total number of worldwide single download sales has surpassed 100 million.
Recently Mars talked about four of his biggest musical inspirations including Elvis.
Mars: The biggest thing Elvis had was the command he had on stage... how he could control the crowd and the band. I think there’s a performance of Elvis on the Ed Sullivan (TV) show where he does ‘Hound Dog.’ At the end he slows it down, and - to me - it looked like an improv moment, not like something they rehearsed. It was like Presley saw girls in the audience freaking out and said to

himself: ‘Watch me slow it down - and then really go nuts.’ And he slows it down at the end and then starts his little dance, and he had them..."
As a child performer Bruno Mars used to do a stunning Elvis impersonation.
His other inspirations are Michael Jackson (I don’t know what kid didn’t listen to him at my age), Bob Marley (Bob is one of the greatest songwriters ever), Jimi Hendrix (The greatest guitar player in the world).

'Elvis At Stax' Forty Years Ago: Forty years ago this week Elvis was in the STAX studios in Memphis for the initial July session.
When Elvis entered the STAX Memphis studios in July 1973 the last time he had been in a recording studio to lay down new material was March 1972 for the ‘Burning Love' session over a year previously. It is unbelievable but Elvis had only recorded seven new studio masters in the two years between June 1971 and July 1973.
To begin with it was a lacklustre session since, as Marty Lacker notes, "Elvis didn't care what studio it was as long as it wasn't American Studios that Parker and Felton Jarvis had poisoned his mind against. Elvis tole me that the session didn't mean anything to him and that the only reason he was doing it was because Parker and RCA were nagging him to record."
However on the second night of recording things picked up with ‘Find Out What’s Happening’ and ‘I’ve Got A Thing About You Baby’ being laid down.
On July 23rd, the third night, Elvis recorded the Mark James composition ‘Raised On Rock’ relased as the single, followed by
8 takes of the sublime Tony Joe White composition ‘For Ol’ Times Sake’. Listening to the song without the added echo of the final master, one can hear the true openness of the Stax studio ambience which helps give the song even more of that feeling of loneliness that the lyric so requires.
See below for the new STAX release details.

Elvis NOT in a Condom Ad!: It seems that the Elvis world has gone a little crazy as fans suggest that EPE have licensed the use of Elvis' image and music for use in a Trojan condoms lubricant TV advert. Unlike the 'Viva Viagra' advert, which Lisa Marie so hated, this has little to do with Elvis except for a female singer, Avila, crooning a very slowed down and sexy cover of Elvis' 'All Shook Up' - hardly recognisable if you are from the younger generation.
Lisa Marie previously told Rolling Stone magazine that, "I don't know if people have this misconception that Elvis condoms are going to be mass-distributed throughout the world, but that's not going to happen".
And let's be honest, that's not what is happening here. All the advert is using is the sexy song performance - which after all was what got Elvis into so much trouble and with GREAT media publicity back when he started out.
After all when Elvis first sang, "My hands are shaky and my knees are weak" he wasn't singing about weight-lifting!
EPE sold all the rights to Elvis' music to RCA back in 1973 and performers who want to cover the song would only pay the composer royalties to record it. The great Otis Blackwell (now sadly RIP) wrote the song with a split in publishing rights forced upon him by Elvis' hard-line music publishers.
If you want to see and hear the Ad - it's rather clever actually - Click HERE.

Dee Stanley now Recovering In Hospital: "Elvis Presley fans of Nashville" report that Dee Stanley is currently recovering at a Nashville, Tennessee Hospital. Dee is reportedly being treated for Hyponatremia and she was previously in the critical care unit, before doctors could stabilise her condition. Dee also suffered  two seizures and was put on a ventilator. She was taken off the ventilator on Friday and she is now breathing comfortably on her own.
This following update was shared by Dee's son Billy Stanley via his facebook profile: "Had a nice visit with mom... She's a little better, she was talking to me... Just breaks my heart to see her, like this though... She told me to tell you guys, Thanks for the prayers and thoughts. Mom is doing better, but it's going to be a long road to recovery... "
Vernon Presley married Davada (Dee) Elliot Stanley on July 3, 1960. Elvis Heirs Win German Court Case Against Sony: EPE & Lisa Marie, the heirs of Elvis' estate, have won a tactical court case in Germany, where they are campaigning to claw back lost royalties - nearly $5million - for radio replays of the King of Rock's greatest hits.
A Munich appeal court on Thursday ordered a company controlled by Sony to disclose how many times the songs had been played in Germany since April 2008.
Europe's most populous nation and its "golden oldie" stations are still in love with Elvis, who died in 1977.
The ruling raises the odds that Elvis Presley Enterprises, which has the King's daughter Lisa-Marie Presley as a 15-per-cent shareholder, can circumvent a 1973 contract in which he sold many of his future royalties for a lump sum to RCA Records, now part of Sony.
The heirs are appealing a decision against them in a lower German court.
Appeal judges ruled that 3.34 million euros ($A4.78 million) are at stake in the case. They set no date for their final decision on the merits of the claim.

Arthritis silences Scotty Moore - New Interview: Arthritis has invaded the hands of the man “Rolling Stone” magazine rated 29th in its 2011 list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of all time - reports journalist Billy Watkins.
Scotty Moore was Elvis Presley’s original lead guitar player, he was also Elvis’ close friend and worked as his manager for a short time.
“It’s been about seven or eight years since I was able to play,” Moore says by phone from his secluded home outside Nashville. “I had stopped playing professionally several years before that, but I’d still play once in a while for my own enjoyment ... just whatever song came to mind, really.
“Sure, I miss it. But the arthritis came on gradually, so I knew the day would come that I had to deal with it.”
Even though he makes few public appearances and spends most of his days working in his yard and watching “whatever I can find” on television, he is hardly forgotten.
“Paul called just the other day,” Moore says. That would be former Beatle Paul McCartney, who studied Moore’s work note by note as an aspiring musician in Liverpool, England.
“You know, it’s funny to me when people talk about Elvis swiveling his hips and all that,” Moore says. “That wasn’t put on. It was a natural thing for him to be on the balls of his feet when he played guitar and sang. You put a guitar in his hands, ask him to play, and that’s how he stood. That’s how he kept rhythm to what he was singing.
“But after we saw how much the fans loved it, we’d sort of encouraged him to do it. Bill Black was the one who would whisper in Elvis’ ear and tell him to shake his leg or throw his belt out into the audience. It became part of the show.”
Some critics didn’t care for Elvis’ onstage antics. “But I never could understand why,” Moore says. “It wasn’t vulgar. It was just a man filled with music from the top of his head to the tip of his toes, and it was the only way he knew to let it out.”
Elvis, Moore and Black formed the group The Blue Moon Boys, they soon added DJ Fontana “because we really needed drums so people could hear us ... the only amplification our instruments had was my amplifier, and it was nothing compared to the amps of today.”
Moore felt responsible for Elvis during their travels. “I remember his mother getting me off to the side before we left and said, ‘Please take care of my boy.’ I wasn’t much older than Elvis, but I’d been in the Navy for four years and I guess to her I seemed a little more equipped to handle the ways of the world. But I never forgot what she asked me to do, and I tried my best.”
When talking about Elvis’ final years, Moore is torn between anger and sadness.
“We could all see (his death) coming,” Moore says. “We knew things were not going along as they should have been ... that he wasn’t being taken care of like he should’ve been.
“I say this without any hesitation: If things had worked out differently, and that group of us that started out with him could’ve stayed with him all the way through, Elvis would still be alive today. I firmly believe that.

'Elvis At Stax' Uncut Mini-Review: The UK music magazine UNCUT have published their review of the new Stax deluxe set. They gave the set a good rating of 7/10.
Elvis In the wilderness: gems from the King's downward spiral. - As the '70s passed, the lustre of his peerless comeback years fading, Elvis found himself increasingly tangled in a web of poor health and drug abuse, bad business decisions and artistic dead-ends. Recording sessions became haphazard affairs. RCA shamefully releasing anything bearing his name or likeness. However well-intentioned revisionism takes precedence on 'Elvis At Stax', with the producers rifling through the 1973 session tapes, attempting a coherent narrative. The box-set features 55 tracks over three discs cut at Memphis' famed Stax studio, although in truth this grab-bag of would-be pop standards, stale "in-house" Elvis material and a few honest-to-goodness rock'n'roll nuggets bears faint resemblance to the label/studio's classic Southern-soul sound. While you may have to be a serious Elvis scholar to stomach cornball like "Three Com Patches" or multiple takes of syrupy dreck like "Mr Songman", Chuck Berry's "Promised
Land" (all three takes!) fired by spot-on vocals and brilliant James Burton guitar, belongs in Elvis' upper echelon. And so it goes - schizo-style - from the scintillating to the off-the-charts lame. When Elvis connected with younger writers - eg. Tony Joe White (For Ol' times Sake), Dennis Linde (I Got A Feelin' In My Body) and Danny O'Keefe (Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues), Elvis proffered a plausible artistic path, one that regretfully never quite materialised.

'Shades of Elvis' new Tribute Photo Book: A new photo book is in the works that will feature a variety of the world’s biggest music stars paying special homage to Elvis Presley.
'Shades of Elvis' is a collaboration between photographer Christopher Ameruoso and EPE's Priscilla, and will boast new images of celebrities wearing a pair of famous sunglasses that belonged to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Among the famed music artists Ameruoso has captured with the shades are Robert Plant, Elton John, Tom Jones, Steven Tyler, ZZ Top‘s Billy Gibbons, Kiss‘ Gene Simmons and Sammy Hagar.
'Shades of Elvis' will be published in November 2013 and will include more than 70 celebrities donning the glasses.
Among the other celebs that have been snapped for Shades of Elvis are Johnny Depp, Billy Ray Cyrus, director Tim Burton, Peter Fonda, Carmen Electra and John Stamos.
Ameruoso recently posted about the Robert Plant photo shoot.
"What a thrill to work with and photograph this living legend. Robert who I had met at his concert with Priscilla Presley was just a wonderful person to

work with. Listening to Robert talk about what a huge Elvis fan he was and still is, can be so weird to take in as all I keep saying to myself "But you're Robert Plant the front man for the greatest rock and roll band that has ever lived."

"Elvis: The King Revealed" now on US Newsstands: A general edition of "Elvis: The King Revealed" is now available on US newsstands! Earlier this month, the Graceland exclusive version was announced by EPE but now we have a second print with general distribution. And updated cover image.
Yet again EIN notes (see below) that we wonder how many of these 350 "Rare archive photos" are actually unknown. Let's hope EPE doesn't let us down. Sadly none of the photos on the front cover look rare to us.
The new edition of "Elvis: The King Revealed" features another iconic photo from the legendary "'68 Special" performances which celebrates its 45th anniversary this year. "Elvis: The King Revealed" dives deep into Graceland’s historical archives to access thousands of rare photos, documents and vintage items of Elvis memorabilia.

EIN notes that of course it IS great to see yet another Elvis magazine on newsstands

George Klein in Fort Worth: A crowd packed a Fort Worth hall for Elvis Presley again last weekend, or the next person they could find.
Elvis' good-friend George Klein, a pal from eighth grade until the singer’s 1977 death, talked about the singer’s life and seemingly unlimited loves as part of the touring "Elvis at 21" Smithsonian Institution history exhibit.
In one of the all-time understatements, the 77-year-old Klein told the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History crowd that Presley "had a way with the ladies."
"Every girl I ever called to see if she would meet Elvis, none of them ever refused," he said as other museum visitors upstairs were seduced all over by photographer Alfred Wertheimer’s oversize, candid portraits of a hunka-hunka singer at the start of adulthood and fame.
Klein talked about being in a car mobbed by Elvis fans once in Canada: "They broke the antenna, they took the license plate, this guy ran his knife down the side just to get paint scrapings from Elvis’ car. We barely got out of there."
And he talked about rushing to Graceland after Presley’s death: "I had an 8-track tape player going. When I turned in the gates of Graceland, it was right at the end of  'Can’t Help Falling in Love'. Just then, the tape broke."
More than 20,000 visitors have seen the photo and artifact exhibit combining treasures from Graceland with photos by Wertheimer, who was then a 26-year-old freelance photographer.
The exhibit also includes Star-Telegram photos of Presley’s concerts here over 20 years from what is now Cowtown Coliseum to today’s Fort Worth Convention Center.
Klein began another familiar story: "Elvis told me something about Texas when he was on his way to make the movie Jailhouse Rock. He would call out every town, and he knew every little stop and what was next.
"Elvis said, ‘Man, when I started out, I’d crisscross Texas. Texas was really nice to me.’"
In 2013 it still is.

Coco Palms Resort to be demolished?: A committee supporting restoration of a Kauai resort made famous by Elvis Presley has pulled an online petition. The 'Save Coco Palms Committee' removed the petition to save the resort made famous by Elvis a few hours after it went up this Wednesday.
The shuttered resort was made famous by the 1961 Presley move "Blue Hawaii." It was damaged by a 1992 hurricane and county officials ays that it has become an eyesore on Kauai's busiest corridor. Within a few hours of being launched, dozens had already signed on the petition, and many wrote brief accounts of their experience at Coco Palms.
Coco Palms was the only major hotel that never reopened after Hurricane Iniki hit Kauai on Sept. 11, 1992.
Ordinances approved by Kauai County retained a provision for Coco Palms restoration as a nonconforming structure but Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. wants the measure repealed.
The Kauai Planning Commission voted Tuesday to transmit the proposed repeal to the county council. County spokeswoman Beth Tokioka says Carvalho wants to see movement on the property toward cleaning it and progressing toward meaningful re-use.
It was hoped that a new, Hawaii-based group of investors would step-up to restore the property to its former glory - however that idea and the petition has now been removed.
EIN is sending over its roving reporter Sanja Meegin to check out the full story.

Elvis Express Radio today report the original plaque is also back were it belongs, at the feet of The King.
The plaque reads...

An eight year exclusive run in the Las Vegas Hilton showroom.
837 consecutive sold-out performances.
Entertained some 2.5 million people.
Enough to fill the rose bowl 25 times over.

Bruce Springsteen plays Elvis in Belgium: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were the headliners at the TW Classic Festival Saturday night in Werchter, Belgium. Also on the bill was Santana, Blondie and Keane. Ben Harper, Charlie Musselwhite, and Balthazar. Spured on by a BIG sign organised by the Elvis Matters Fan Club, Bruce played two Elvis Presley songs, 'Jailhouse Rock' and then 'Follow That Dream', to begin the encores. It was only the second time Bruce has played 'Jailhouse Rock' at an E Street Band show. The other time was Oct. 2, 2009 at Giants Stadium. 'Follow that Dream' was played for the second time this tour (April 29, 2013 in Olso, Norway) and for only the fourth time since 2000. The song was released by Elvis in 1962 after he starred in the movie of the same name.
EIN congratulates Elvis Matters on their good work!

"Elvis - The 60th Anniversary" Special Magazine: USA TODAY in the states have just published their (one year early!) 'Elvis - The 60th Anniversary of his First Recording' special Edition magazine.
Featuring articles such as..
- 'I Don't Sound Like Nobody' - How a gift for Gladys set Rock'n'Roll history in motion.
- Priscilla and Lisa Marie
- '20 Essential Songs' (see news story below)
A nice song selection and neat reviews. For 'Hound Dog' it notes "DJ Fontana’s furious drum roll between the verses caught listeners’ ears, but it was Elvis’ hip-thrusting gyrations during live performances of the song that caused the destruction of American civilization as we then knew it."
While it all looks a little 'mainstream', reports from US Elvis fans are VERY positive - after all, how often do we see a new Elvis magazine in the newsstands nowadays. Sadly the cover photo is reversed! (see below) 48 pages packed with photos and articles, how can you go wrong? Only $4.95 in the US.
Get it NOW before it sells out. You can order it On-Line here.

Marlyn Mason, Dan Haggerty in UK, talk about Elvis: Two Hollywood stars who worked with Elvis on some of his movies shared secrets from the film set in East Lancashire last night.
Marlyn Mason, leading in lady in 'The Trouble With Girls' and Dan Haggerty, were part of a special charity show at King George’s Hall, Blackburn.
Marlyn Mason (right) worked with Elvis for 10 weeks on the 1969 movie and was immediately struck by the star’s charisma.
"You couldn’t help but fall in love with him," she said, "He was so handsome and such a nice person. He was a true star.
I had been in a play on Broadway and then was told I had got the part with Elvis. I wasn’t really a fan of his music so it wasn’t until we met on set that I fully appreciated the magic of the man.
Elvis had great comedy timing and it was easy to ad-lib with him. For instance one time I was off-camera, and it was to get a close-up reaction shot from Elvis. To get the right reaction I slowly started unbuttoning his shirt and taking his belt off. And Elvis was just giving me these hot looks. Well, that was exactly what the director wanted. Elvis just reacted as he should, he didn't stop the shoot  to exclaim 'What are you doing?' Elvis just rolled with the whatever was happening! Elvis was so great to work with. That was the best ten weeks of my whole career"

Dan Haggerty also believes that Elvis was special.
"He was very kind to me and he had that aura about him which only the genuine stars possess," he said, "There was no big ego with him. He’d always have time to stop and say hello. The other thing that people don’t appreciate was that he was a wonderful actor, he was a very talented man."
Haggerty had many opportunities to get to know Elvis through their mutual friend Ann Margret. Dan built Ann's custom "chopper" motorcycle and spent a lot of time with her. They both socialised with Elvis in Las Vegas where Dan got to know him well. He also had an uncredited role in the 1965 Elvis film 'Girl Happy'.

"Operation Elvis" Targets Bikers!: In the Australian Hunter Valley wine region the highway patrol's "Operation Elvis" will be back this August (and for Elvis Week!) with a focus on motorcyclists. Maitland highway patrol Senior Sergeant said police were concerned that an increasing number of motorcyclists were becoming involved in crashes around the area. He said most motorcyclists involved in a crash were more likely to be injured than car occupants and police were working on finalising the details of the campaign to make an impact on the trend.
The operation would involve patrols, especially around the vineyards, and reinforcing safety messages when speaking to motorcyclists, he said.
Operation Elvis was last held in June where police detected 39 drink-drivers in the Central Hunter command – a 30 per cent increase on the same time last year.
"We have had an impact in reducing alcohol-related collisions, however, injury collisions are still a concern, so we will continue to work at that."
EIN wonders what Elvis would think!

20 Essential Elvis Songs: USA Today recently published their 20 Essential Elvis Songs, noting....
Wise men say only fools rush in to a debate on Elvis' oeuvre. The man could, and did, sing just about anything. Including the phone book (cue up Memphis, Tennessee).
Elvis Presley adopted Mario Lanza-inspired romantic pieces, Arthur "Big Boy'' Crudup's down-and-dirty blues, pop tunes from Brill Building wiseacres Leiber and Stoller, Jackie Wilson-style R&B and several shades of country — and spit them out as rock 'n' roll.
Along the way, there would be cool Christmas songs, blue-eyed soul, soundtrack snoozers and enough schlock to make you 'Do the Clam'. Plus, he knew gospel, chapter and verse. Lord, could Elvis sing gospel.
Elvis was Americana before we knew the word.
That's why, when assessing the more than 750 songs Elvis recorded, it's more useful to appreciate his mastery of multiple styles rather than quibble over whether How Great Thou Art was, well, greater than Hound Dog.
So put your Suspicious Minds at ease and savor this survey of the
best of his breadth, from the Sun sessions to the sunset years: 20 essential Elvis songs and the moments in them that make you turn your head (and pelvis) toward the speakers.
.... From 'That's All Right' to 'Way Down' - but is your favourite there?
Amazingly 'In The Ghetto' is missing, as is 'How Great Thou Art' and 'It's Now Or Never'!

Collingwood Elvis Festival Tickets Selling Well: Tickets for 19th annual Collingwood Elvis Festival are selling better than last year.
Festival General Manager Rosemarie O'Brien says as of July 5th, there is almost 100 thousand dollars in ticket sales.
O'Brien says that's almost 10 thousand dollars more than this same time last year.
She adds there are some changes this year including accommodating those who arrive at 2 am on the Friday to get good seats for the Awesome Street Party. The entertainment will now start at 11 am instead of 1 pm and go to 10 at night and if that's not enough, Elvis movies will be shown on a screen on the stage following the live entertainment.
A big draw this year is a re-creation of the 'Aloha From Hawaii' concert with the Stamps and Sweet Inspirations who were in the original concert with Elvis in 1973. There will be a meet and greet after.
O'Brien adds they weren't able to get Priscilla Presley this year, but there is still hope she may come for the 20th anniversary next year.

Elvis to receive dedication plaque at Humes High: As part of Elvis Week, on Tuesday August 13, Elvis Presley, along with high school classmates George Klein and Red West, will have a plaque dedicated in their honor at Humes High School in Memphis. Elvis Presley's friend, George Klein, announced this on his recent SiriusXM's Radio show.
Radio DJ George Klein, nicknamed "GK" by Elvis, met Presley in the 8th grade at Humes High School and remained good friends with The King until his death. Elvis was the best man at Klein's wedding. Red West, an actor and songwriter, worked as a bodyguard for Elvis and was part of Elvis' entourage, known as the 'Memphis Mafia'.
Because Elvis Presley graduated from Humes, the high school is on the National Register of Historic Places. The school now houses the Humes Middle School. Due to the low student population in that area, the city has plans to turn it into a performing arts school.
The dedication ceremony will take place during Elvis Week 2013 celebration in Memphis. The ceremony starts at 10 AM with George Klein in attendance.

Elvis records 'That's All Right' 59 Years Ago: July 5, 1954: History credits Sam Phillips with the discovery of Elvis Presley, which is perfectly fair, though it fails to account for the roles of four others in making that discovery possible: The business partner who first spotted something special in Elvis, the two session men who vouched for his musical talent and the blues figure who wrote the song he was playing when Sam Phillips realized what he had on his hands. The song in question was "That's All Right" by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, and Elvis' unrehearsed performance of it—recorded by Sam Phillips on JULY 5th 1954 is a moment regarded as the true beginning of the rock-and-roll revolution.
It was in the summer of 1953 when Elvis had paid $3.98 plus tax to make an acetate record. Elvis sang "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartaches Begin," causing business partner Marion Kreisler to write down "Good ballad singer. Hold" in her notes. It was Kreisler who was impressed enough by the incredibly shy young singer that she repeatedly brought his name up to Phillips over the next year and mentioned that he seemed worth following up with. In early July 1954, Phillips finally sent two of his favorite session musicians, guitarist

Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, to go meet with Elvis and report back to him with their assessment. After talking and jamming a bit with Presley, Moore and Black gave Phillips a report that was hardly enthusiastic. "He didn't knock me out," Moore told Phillips, "[but] the boy's got a good voice." Phillips decided to take a flyer and schedule a recording session with Presley for July 5.
Phillips knew that something was brewing in the music world of 1954, and he had a pretty good idea what it would take to make the pot boil: A white singer who could sing "black" rhythm and blues. However, the first several hours of the July 5 session did nothing to convince Sam Phillips that Elvis was the one he'd been looking for. Elvis' renditions of "Harbor Lights" and "I Love You Because" were stiff and uninspired, and after numerous takes and re-takes, Phillips called for a break. Rather than shoot the breeze with his fellow musicians or step outside for a breath of fresh air, Elvis began to mess around on the guitar, playing and singing "That's All Right," but at least twice as fast as the original.
Through an open door in the control room, Sam Phillips heard this unfamiliar rendition of a familiar blues number and knew he'd found the sound he'd been looking for. "[Phillips] stuck his head out and said 'What are you doing?'" Scotty Moore later recalled. "And we said, 'We don't know.' 'Well, back up,' Sam said, 'try to find a place to start, and do it again.'" ...
With that the Rock'n'Roll revolution was born.

Earl Watson shares his bodyguard stories of Elvis: One of Elvis’ early bodyguards Earl "The Pearl" Watson, now 88, recently regaled customers with stories of the rock-n-roll legend.
He signed and sold copies of his book "Earl: The Hollywood Knickerbocker Hotel’s Doorman to the Stars" while chatting and posing for photos with diners. Watson is renowned in his own right, rubbing elbows with numerous movie stars, entertainers and athletes during his 16-year stint as doorman at the landmark hotel which closed in the early 1970’s. He’s also a decorated World War II veteran who participated in the D-Day Invasion. But the popular topic with the crowd, of course, was his experience with the late "King of Rock and Roll" in Presley’s early years of stardom.
"I saved his life once," Watson recounted with a laugh in sharing a story of a public outing in Los Angeles. His longtime friendship and acquaintance with Col. Parker, dating back to Parker’s days representing singer Eddy Arnold, set the stage for the job guarding Presley during concert appearances in the area in 1956 and ‘57.
Earl also shared about meeting Presley’s parents, Vernon and Gladys, and also shared about Presley’s dynamic personality and stage presence with his fans. He said one of his most cherished possessions is an autographed color photograph of Presley decked in a distinctive green jacket. Parker told Watson that this was the first color photograph that Presley had ever had done.
Presley also specifically called Watson to have him visit on set at Paramount Studios in Hollywood while Presley was filming the movie "GI Blues" in 1960. Watson said he also had the privilege of attending Presley’s final show in Las Vegas before the singer’s death in 1977.

UPDATED - 'Elvis - The Man & His Music'#100 review: EIN has been overseas celebrating its own 100th anniversary recently so we've been running late with reviews. However the 100th issue of 'ETM&HM' is well worth your attention. The magazine first appeared in 1988 and was the first to really focus on The King's musical legacy. Over 25 years the magazine has presented exclusive interviews, unpublished photos and fact-filled articles.
The 100th issue is a 60-page bumper edition. What EIN enjoys is a magazine that delivers fascinating reading, new revelations, great reviews as well as some humour, and this issue has it in spades.
Features include...
- Let's Go Back And Touch The Past - A look back at some of the essential releases of the last 25 years.
Luther Moore examines all the excitements that have come to light in the last 25 years both official releases and bootleg. In it he notes..
... Since December '88... it's been a treasure trove of almost unimaginable discoveries... For those of us who'd believed that RCA had junked or erased all of their '50s session tapes, the past quarter century has brought some very pleasant surprises indeed. Inspired detective work and a thorough scouring of the vaults (both officially and 'otherwise') has seen outtake after outtake,

rarity after rarity, finally brought to light.
But rarity, of course, will often triumph over quality, as it did spectacularly with 'My Happiness' (1990's 'The Great Performances'). My God! Who ever would have believed it? Incredibly the second acetate surfaced too, even though - RCA being RCA - it took almost a decade for all four sides to see a collective release (1999's 'Sunrise'). So it wasn't just the bootleggers offering up the surprises.

- Elvis And The Racquetball Racket - This is a fascinating in-depth account revealing an amazing amount we never knew. Author Paul Richardson provides some incredible insights over 11 pages including...

... "As for receiving confirmation of any legal action, that didn't arrive at Graceland until mid-afternoon on May 6th when Drayton Beecher Smith it was handed a copy of the complaint to deliver upstairs to his famous client. The King responded to the news that, like Dave Hebler and the Wests, 'Diamond' Joe and 'Needle' Nick had turned against him by - as near-neighbour, Donna Lewis, recorded in her diary -blasting out his bedroom window with a shotgun in a short, sharp, violent outburst. Indeed, so strong and frightening was Elvis' anger, and such was the concern for his health and well-being, that a sedative had to be administered.....
- The Dirty Dozen - 12 of the worst Elvis cover versions.
Another fabulous article by Luther Moore that had me laughing out loud!....
...  "Of course if it's unintentional comedy you're looking for, then search no further than Peter & Gordon's 'A Mess Of Blues' ('In Touch With Peter & Gordon', Columbia) which has it in spades. I can now understand why people took so many drugs back in the 1960s. You'd need to be heavily sedated to endure a horror like this. And sadly, this wasn't the hapless duo's first offence either. It can only be described as an act of musical terrorism. Just what happened here, musically, during the 1960s? A whole rash of white middle-class art students suddenly thought they could pass for black Mississippi bluesmen with monstrosities like this as the result. What made Elvis' waxing such a milestone recording was his instinctive command of the blues medium, born of his surroundings and moulded by his southern upbringing. Two hapless halfwits from suburbia were always going to be clueless, and so it proved."
Not to forget the other ETM&HM exclusives...
- Carol Montgomery Interview - The former backing singer recalls working with The King.
- Elvis On Super 8 - The golden age of home cinema.
- David English Interview - Behind-the-scenes stories from the author of 'Welcome Home Elvis', 'From Memphis To Hollywood' and 'Summer Of '61'.
Plus 8 pages of reviews by Gordon Minto and Trevor Cajiao, letters, rare photos and more...

The Elvis In Demand Mystery - Solved!: Author Nigel Goodall has posted a follow-up to his interesting article about 'Elvis In Demand' featured below. ... In my blog post about the Elvis In Demand mystery last week, I concluded my piece by saying what an interesting exercise it would be to try and find out if Elvis did actually sign any copies of the albums, and if any fans did indeed have one. You can probably imagine how thrilled I was to hear from several fans who had won a copy of the album in the infamous competition that was run in the Daily Express, and still owned the letter from the newspaper verifying the authenticity of the autographed LPs, which proves, once and for all, that Elvis did indeed sign 15 copies of the album in July 1977, just one month ahead of his sudden death, which were then offered as second runner-up prizes in the Express contest. Both the signed album and the authentication letter with the original newspaper clipping detailing the competition results and winners are included in this post for which I have to thank Bernard Roughton for sharing with me, and for allowing me to reproduce them here.....

For those of us who'd believed that RCA had junked or erased all of their '50s session tapes, the past quarter century has brought some very pleasant surprises indeed. Inspired detective work and a thorough scouring of the vaults (both officially and 'otherwise') has seen outtake after outtake, rarity after rarity, finally brought to light.
There have been some pretty nifty official releases too... How about a pre-master Take 5 of 'Heartbreak Hotel' no less ('Elvis 56'), Sun outtakes of both 'Blue Moon' and 'Harbor Lights' ('Today. Tomorrow & Forever'), and radio station acetates of the previously unknown 'Fool, Fool, Fool', 'Hearts Of Stone' and, more recently, 'Little Mama'. Of course, any '50s overview simply can't ignore Jorgensen's momentous 'A Boy From Tupelo', and by extension the FTD label itself.
Elvis' '60s catalogue has been pretty extensively mined too with an array of simply stunning releases that would have been dismissed as sheer fantasy back in '88. Standouts include Bilko's jaw-dropping 'American Crown Jewels', 'Finding The Way Home' (Southern Style), and 2006's incredible five-volume 'American Way' anthology (Southern Comfort)...."
- Elvis And The Racquetball Racket - This is a fascinating in-depth account revealing an amazing amount we never knew. Author Paul Richardson provides some incredible insights over 11 pages including...
... "Vernon Presley's reply, as reported by Associated Press, was that he had no knowledge of any lawsuit and that Elvis was away from home. In both respects, Vernon was telling the truth. Elvis was coming to the end of his third tour of 1977 - that very night he performed for 19,600 fans in Chicago - and would not return to Memphis for another day or so. As for receiving confirmation of any legal action, that didn't arrive at Graceland until mid-afternoon on May 6th when Drayton Beecher Smith it was handed a copy of the complaint to deliver upstairs to his famous client. Indeed, so strong and frightening was Elvis' anger, and such was the concern for his health and well-being, that a sedative had to be administered.
For the next two weeks, Elvis spent much of his time alone in his room, most likely stewing on all his problems, which now included this lawsuit, and regretting being so naive as to involve himself with people who were, he had told Red West, "cold-hearted businessmen"."
They'd already tortured both 'All Shook Up' and 'Young And Beautiful' (equally ghastly, as expected) before loosening their tonsils on this solid-gold Elvis classic, in what can only be described as an act of musical terrorism.

Robert Pattinson dating Riley Keough?: Robert Pattinson has supposedly moved on from his Kristen Stewart split and is reportedly dating Elvis' granddaughter, Riley Keough.
The Twilight actor is said to be much happier enjoying a "normal" relationship with Riley, compared to his high-profile romance with former co-star Kristen.
"Rob really likes the fact that Riley is not absorbed by celebrities and that she really isn’t a celebrity herself. Her family members are the celebrities."
"Riley can walk into stores and nobody really knows who she is — she and Rob bond over the fact that their lives together are more normal,".
"Robert and Riley have a lot in common. They both love LA, London, rock music and table tennis". The lovebirds are said to be inseparable and have been spending as much time as possible with each other before Robert heads to Toronto to begin working on his latest film, Map to the Stars.
It's gossip magazine stuff but they met at events in May and were first spotted together as a couple in late June.

Bruce Springsteen covers Elvis' "Burning Love": Elvis fan and rocker Bruce Springsteen recently performed his own Elvis tribute at a tour stop in Paris, France. During his pre-show on June 29, 2013, Springsteen began the show with an acoustic version of the Elvis hit "Burning Love."
During the 2012 South by Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival, Springsteen credited Elvis' 1956 "Ed Sullivan Show" appearance as the beginning of a new language in pop culture by saying, "Elvis was the first modern, twentieth century man - the precursor of the sexual revolution, of the civil rights revolution - drawn from the same Memphis as Martin Luther King - creating fundamental outsider art that would be embraced by a mainstream popular culture." -

'Girls, Girls, Girls' Budget Soundtrack: Later this month the budget label Hallmark in the EU is releasing the standard 'Girls, Girls, Girls' soundtrack album for £3.75 = US$5.80

The publicity interestingly notes.. By the time Girls Girls Girls was released, there were other changes afoot too, most notably the decision not to work with Mike Leiber and Jerry Stoller quite as closely as previously (a decision taken by Colonel Tom Parker rather than Elvis himself), resulting in Elvis recording no new Leiber & Stoller songs, only those that had already been recorded elsewhere. Despite this hindrance, the soundtrack to Girls Girls Girls stands up quite well, with Return To Sender the key track among the 13 on display.

Elvis Sweatpants Re-Listed on Ebay: Marty Lacker was close to Elvis for twenty years and was his right hand man for a number of years and co-Best Man at his wedding.
The EBay description notes ... One day in late 75 or early 76 Elvis asked Marty to come upstairs at Graceland as he wanted to talk with him about a private matter. They talked for awhile and then we went into his dressing room off his bathroom where all of his clothes were kept.  He went to his closet to find something to wear that day as he still was in his pajamas.  All of a sudden Elvis started throwing clothes and pajamas on the floor which basically meant he no longer wanted them for one reason or another.
Amongst the pile were three pairs of pajamas, a belt and some shirts and gray sweat pants.  As usual he told Marty to take whatever he wanted before his father got them because his father never threw anything away.  Among the items Marty took were the gray sweat pants..  Marty remembers that a few times Elvis wore these sweat pants while he played touch football at Graceland with Marty and the Memphis Mafia.
Marty took items Elvis wanted to throw away because from time to time Memphis Charities would ask him if he could get something from Elvis they could auction off for their charity.  This is one item Marty still had after Elvis died and the charities stopped asking. Thanks. Marty.
This item will come with a letter of authenticity & will be sent directly to the winning bidder from Marty himself. One Day to Go for bidding

Blues singer Bobby 'Blue' Bland Dies aged 83: Bobby 'Blue' Bland was among the great storytellers of blues and soul music and was an integral part of the Memphis music scene. In songs such as 'I Pity the Fool', 'Cry Cry Cry' and 'Who Will the Next Fool Be' he created tempestuous arias of love, betrayal and resignation, set against roiling, dramatic orchestrations, and left the listener drained but awed. On 23 June Bobby 'Blue' Bland now 83, died in Germantown, near Memphis.
In December 1957 Elvis attended the WDIA Goodwill Revue which included singers Bobby 'Blue' Bland (right) as well as Little Junior Parker. The photo of Elvis with them both appeared in the Memphis papers the next day. Elvis described the concert as "It was the real thing" summing up both the performance and the audience response.
Bobby 'Blue' Bland's husky voice was gorgeous from the start, but as a young man he followed BB King – for a while literally, as his valet and chauffeur – and his singing took on a special character only after he began to study the recorded sermons of the Detroit preacher CL Franklin, Aretha's father. "That's where I got my squall from," he recalled. That alchemy of blues and gospel cadences would create one of the most affecting voices in black music.
He was born just north of Memphis in Tennessee and in his late teens he hung out in the city with King, the pianist Rosco Gordon and the singer Johnny Ace, an informal musical gang known as the Beale

Streeters. He made a few recordings for Chess and Modern, and then signed with Duke.
For much of the 50s Bland toured the "chitlin' circuit"  with harmonica player Little Junior Parker, in a revue called Blues Consolidated. Some of Bland's best work, done under Scott's direction in 1960-63, appeared on the albums Two Steps from the Blues, Here's the Man... and Call on Me. During the 60s Bland placed more than a dozen records in the R&B top 10, reaching No 1 with I Pity the Fool and That's the Way Love Is, but his kind of soul music was being eclipsed by the catchier sounds of Motown and the funkier ones of Stax, and by the end of the decade he was working less and drinking more.

"One Day, Two Legends" new Elvis/Beatles Documentary: If you could meet Elvis Presley, it would happen like this, according to Joe Esposito, Elvis' CO-best man and road manager of 17 years.
"He'd walk right up to you, shake your hand and say, 'Hi, I'm Elvis Presley,' like you'd never heard of him. That's just how he was,'" said Joe Esposito. Joe, who lives in Las Vegas, stayed with his brother while shooting interviews for a documentary, 'One Day, Two Legends' that is being produced via a shared Joe Esposito company, JRE Entertainment.
Producer Tom Jikomes of Gurnee is filming the documentary, which tells the story of the day the Beatles met Elvis. He's been working on it for three years, and it is transforming into a story about the kinship Elvis and Joe shared. Jikomes hopes the film will be released to cable television by Aug. 27, the day the Beatles and Elvis met nearly 50 years ago.
The Elvis Joe knew – not the legend who even The Beatles were nervous to meet, but his best friend – was a kind-hearted person who wanted to be good to everyone, and didn't want anyone to think he was somehow special.
Joe was scheduled tomorrow July 1 to continue production with Louise
Harrison, Beatle George Harrison's sister.
Tom Jikomes was born on the exact day the two legends met. As a huge Elvis fan, it was a dream come true for him to meet Joe when working on another project 10 years ago.
When Jikomes discovered that Joe had not only planned the meeting, but drove The Beatles to meet Elvis at his Los Angeles home, he was amazed that no one had thought to explore the subject before. No photos, videos or audio exists of the meeting, so Joe is one of the few people who can tell the story.

News from earlier this week...
45 years ago - The Comeback Special: On June 27 1968, forty-five years ago, Elvis began recording his legendary 'Comeback Special'. His manager Col Parker had wanted the show to be simply Elvis singing Christmas carols but 26-year-old director Steve Binder had more ambitious ideas. Binder noted that Elvis and his fellow musicians would unwind by jamming and playing old blues numbers and, despite Elvis's nervousness about recording live, he convinced Elvis that recording an 'unplugged' session would be the most memorable part of the show. The 'Comeback Special' revitalised his career.
At 6pm Elvis and his friends assembled in the NBC studios for the live taping of the first "Sit-Down" show. Clad in his Bill Belew designed super-cool black leather suit Elvis sings from his soul as if his very life - or career - depended on it....
.. Charlie Hodge shouts "Play it dirty, play it dirty!" But Elvis is already playing it dirty, reaching as if under the guitar for tones that can't be advertised. As he climbs the mountains and crosses the streams of 'Tryin' To Get To You' he waves his hands in the air, he rubs the strings of the guitar on his legs, he picks it up
and shakes it, his whole body fluttering like a leaf picked up by a wind and shot through the air.
The music rises, slams down, rises again, as if a whole new language has been discovered, as if this night, it has to be made to say everything, because the power of ELVIS in this way - in this GLORY - and live on TV will never be spoken in this way again."

The "Elvis In Demand" Mystery: Author Nigel Goodall explains some of the mystery behind the very successful UK 1976 release of the compilation 'Elvis In Demand'......
...  Back in 1976, in the days when I was a graphic designer, I went up to RCA's Curzon Street offices in London to pitch an idea for a five track EP of then unavailable movie songs, including the studio version of Johnny B Goode from Elvis On Tour. I did a full proposal and a full colour sleeve visual with a letterbox still of Elvis in Charro, which I had picked up at the fan club convention in Leicester, that same year, where I had seen the Aloha From Hawaii TV special for the first time on a big screen. Seems incredible to think about now, but none of the British television companies had at that time scheduled it for broadcast.
The guy at RCA liked my proposal for the movie EP very much, and said that he wanted to make it happen, and told me he would have to get approval from the Colonel before proceeding any further, and would send it over to the Colonel. And that was the last I heard of it!
'Elvis In Demand' though, was quite a unique album for its time. It came about when RCA UK invited British fans of the official fan club to select 16 songs from Elvis's extensive recorded repertoire to represent

studio work, Hollywood film soundtracks and live shows. Most songs picked were an assortment of singles, B-sides, album tracks and some obscure movie songs. The idea was to have on one album, as many songs that were not available at that time. Although looking back on it now, the list of selected tracks may seem strange, at the time, there was a sensible logic behind it, and it proved to be a most successful idea. It sold over 100,000 copies, peaked at No. 12 in the UK album chart and earned itself a silver disc award. It was released a month after Suspicion had become a Top Ten single and many still associate the song with the album, even though it had first appeared, 15 years before, on Pot Luck, Elvis’s No.1 album from 1962.
Even more strange is the story that Elvis personally autographed 15 copies of the sleeve in June 1977, with "Best Wishes Elvis Presley", which according to those who have claimed to have seen it, was clearly visible in black ink. If true, that would mean the album sleeves would have probably been among some of the last things Elvis would have signed for fans, but one also has to wonder what he must have thought about being asked to sign a record album with such a "ghostly" looking illustration. ...

'Elvis and Sinatra' new Fake Duet: Hooly Dooly there's some weird stuff going around these days! While the "Elvis Duets" album is still being considered by SONY, the dodgy 'One Trybal' label is working with Public Domain material to create an album of fake duets.
And to be honest, it's a stinker!
From the album 'Impossible Duets: Frank Sinatra and Friends' the 'Are You Lonesome Tonight' duet is one of the worst. Other artists such as Chet Baker, Julie London and Doris Day fair better but it's a very strange concept overall.

Elvis' Cadillac For Auction: Elvis Presley's Cadillac station wagon, Steve McQueen's old truck and prescription sunglasses worn by John Lennon are among hundreds of items once owned by celebrities that are scheduled to be auctioned in California next month.
The Mecum Auction Company said it will be displaying and auctioning about 2,000 pieces of celebrity-related memorabilia in Santa Monica, Calif. on July 26-27. One of the auction's highlights will be Elvis' 1972 Cadillac Custom Estate Wagon.
Elvis’s Cadillac Estate Wagon is cream with a brown vinyl

top, light leather interior and has a small gold plaque on the passenger side door engraved with “TCB.” The car has the original Tennessee title, an insurance document signed by Elvis and a letter from Jack Soden President of EPE describing a colorful story about the history of the car.
Apparently, Colonel Parker’s widow said Elvis owned the car and gave it as a gift to Colonel Parker. The car was in Las Vegas and Elvis would “borrow” the car for trips to Los Angeles and his home in Palm Springs. Colonel Parker got tired of tracking the car down, so he told Elvis to take the car back. Elvis took the car back to Graceland where it was used to haul around Elvis and his friends. After his death the car was used by the staff at Graceland.
The car was kept in the Las Vegas home of Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis' manager, and then at the Las Vegas Hilton. It was later sent to Graceland, Elvis' longtime Memphis home, before the car was auctioned off with other Elvis possessions in 1999. Other Elvis-related items included in the auction are his Army induction and discharge papers and rare photos.
The auction will feature other unique pieces of pop culture history, such as Lennon's 1970s-style aviator prescription sunglasses with black plastic frames and amber-tinted lenses. The glasses were consigned by May Pang, Lennon's former personal assistant, who will be in attendance for the auction to authenticate the item, according to Mecum.
Mecum says items with ties to John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Jack Nicholson, Roy Rogers, Hunter S. Thompson, Jimmy Stewart, Burt Reynolds and Gene Kelly also will be auctioned.

June 26 - A Sad Day: June 26th is an inauspicious day being the date of Elvis' last ever concert in 1977 - as well as the anniversary of the death of his father Vernon Presley just two years later.
June 26th 1977 "Elvis performs in true Presley style before 18,000"
... "As the lights in the Arena was turned down after intermission, you could feel a silent plea rippling through the audience: Please, Elvis, don't be fat.
And then he appeared, in a gold and white jumpsuit and white boots, bounding onstage with energy that was a relief to everyone. At 42, Elvis is still carrying around some excess baggage on his mid-section, but it didn't stop
him from giving a performance in true Presley style.
His opening number, the audience-grabbing 'C.C. Rider' got his portion of the show off to a flash-bulb-popping, hand-clapping start. Elvis' older numbers seemed to draw more applause, although just about everything he did created mass-hysteria, especially his leg jerks. Elvis has limited his karate movements, but the stances he takes with his guitar generated screams and shrieks from delighted fans. One of his best numbers, we feel, was "It's Now Or Never," followed by a medley of his hits. The packed Arena was indication enough that Elvis is still as popular as ever. Well, well, well, well!" - The Indianapolis Star.

Vernon Presley Interview: In January 1978, Elvis' father Vernon Presley agreed to an in-depth interview with Nancy Anderson for Good Housekeeping magazine.
The interview is incredible for Vernon's honesty and openness as he discusses everything from Elvis' birth, his childhood, his girlfriends, and even his drug habits. The interview begins ....
"My love for my son began even before he was born on January 8, 1935. At that time there was almost nobody poorer than my wife Gladys and me.
But we were thrilled and excited when we learned that we were going to be parents. I was only 18 years old, but throughout Gladys’ pregnancy it never occurred to me that I wouldn‘t be able to take care of her and the baby - -

Despite the never ending string of movies that needed publicity and promotion, Elvis gave very few interviews in the mid-sixties. This magazine feature therefore captured some rather interesting comments from him.
Elvis discussed everything from The Beatles, Priscilla, Ann-Margret, His Career, and Girls.
THE BEATLES - `They don't bother me ... I wish them luck'

Memphis Horns / Wayne Jackson Documentary: Emmy-winner director Ted Bogosian is working on a new documentary on the Memphis Horns - and needs your help via Kickstarter.
Born just 3 days and a few miles apart, The Memphis Horns' Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love became symbols of A New South, as if by some cosmic design. Throughout America's Civil Rights Movement, The Memphis Horns effortlessly showcased the promise of racial harmony for concert audiences from London to Monterey Pop to Oslo ... and for listening audiences worldwide. From Elvis to Otis, Bono, Sting and Jack White, Lifetime GRAMMY recipient Wayne Jackson shares the secrets of his Star-Studded musical life. On legendary recordings like Respect, Try A Little Tenderness, Suspicious Minds, Sledgehammer, Sweet Caroline & (Sittin' On The) Dock Of The Bay, Icons from Elvis, Otis and Aretha through to James Taylor, Billy Joel, U2, Willie Nelson, Sting, Neil Young, Jack White and Alicia Keys have all called on Wayne, West Memphis'

Favorite Son, for the perfect complements he could magically coax from his horn and help their songs skyrocket up the charts.
Based on Wayne's recently finished three-volume autobiography, "In My Wildest Dreams: Takes 1, 2 and 3", our Rockumentary film promises -- with your help! -- to make audiences laugh, cry, sing and dance in the aisles when it premieres. This documentary will not be scrubbed clean. Wayne likes to say "you can't be an angel and make this kind of music." Believe me, after playing with everyone from Elvis to Neil Young, Wayne is full of inside stories, wit and wisdom. So we plan to have Wayne present his unique and musically unparalleled story In His Own Words, based on his autobiography.
Help me complete this cinematic valentine to Wayne, his Memphis roots and the international fame his music continues to bring American music. Together, let's make 'Memphis Horn! Wayne Jackson's Wildest Dreams' the movie musical trip of a star-studded Memphis Lifetime.
Please GO HERE to see some very moving footage of the last time Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love played together at the STAX studios - and help Kick Start this film.

Slim Whitman dies at 90: Country singer Slim Whitman, the high-pitched yodeller who sold millions of records through ever-present TV ads in the 1980s and 1990s and whose song saved the world in the film comedy "Mars Attacks!," died Wednesday at a Florida hospital. He was 90. Whitman died of heart failure at Orange Park Medical Center.
Whitman's tenor falsetto and ebony moustache and sideburns became global trademarks — and an inspiration for countless jokes — thanks to the TV commercials that pitched his records. But he was a serious musical influence on early rock, and in the British Isles, he was known as a pioneer of country music for popularising the style there.
Whitman was the headliner on July 30, 1954 at the Overton Park Shell in Memphis where Elvis made his professional stage debut – Elvis’ name on the advert was then misspelt as "Ellis Presley"! Apparently Whitman encouraged the teenage Presley who admitted he was scared stiff.
Whitman recorded more than 65 albums and sold millions of records, including 4 million of "All My Best" that was marketed on TV.
His career spanned six decades, beginning in the late 1940s, but he achieved cult figure status in the 1980s. His visage as an ordinary guy singing romantic ballads struck a responsive chord with the public.
Born Ottis Dewey Whitman Jr. in Tampa on Jan. 23, 1923, he worked as a young man in a meatpacking plant, at a shipyard and as a postman. He was able to get on radio in Tampa and signed with RCA Records in 1949 with the help of Col. Tom Parker, who later became Presley's longtime manager. RCA gave Whitman the show business name Slim — he was a slender 6-foot-1 — to replace his uninspiring birth name.
In 1952, Whitman had his first hit record, "Love Song of the Waterfall," which 25 years later became part of the soundtrack of the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." Another Whitman hit from that year, "Indian Love Call," was used to humorous effect in the 1996 "Mars Attacks!" — his yodel causes the Martians' heads to explode.
He crossed paths with Presley in July 1954 when he starred at a concert in a Memphis park just as Presley was launching his career.
According to Guralnick's book "Last Train to Memphis,"Presley's brief, energetic turn on stage caused a wild reaction from the crowd. When Whitman came on for his performance, he told the audience: "You know
I can understand your reaction, 'cos I was standing backstage and I was enjoying it just as much as you."
Whitman would also later run into Elvis as a performer on the Louisiana Hayride radio show.
Other Whitman hits included 'Have I Told You Lately That I Love You', 'Danny Boy' and 'I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen' - songs which Elvis would later record.

'Million Dollar Quartet' New Book: The Million Dollar Quartet is the name given to recordings made on December 4, 1956 in the Sun Record Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. The recordings were of an impromptu jam session between Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash.
To be published in August, "The Million Dollar Quartet: Jerry Lee, Carl, Elvis & Johnny" by Stephen Miller details the early lives and careers of the quartet to where they were in 1956. Relevant social and economic factors which meant that a massive audience of young people were keenly looking for a new kind of music they could call their own.
Also covered are the "reunions" of surviving members of the quartet, the emergence of the tapes - first on bootleg and then legitimate CDs - and the genesis of the stage show and its reception. This music has enduring appeal.
The author Stephen Miller has had a lifelong interest in popular music in general and country music in particular and has already published biographies of Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Kris Kristofferson.

Save Elvis Presley Hillcrest House In Beverly Hills: Despite earlier indications that the new owner of Elvis' classic Hillcrest Home was going to preserve the original house, it now looks like the new owner Peter Morton is going to callously demolish this classic home.
Soon another 'historic building' will be gone. The new owner of the King's famous mansion in Beverly Hills has decided to demolish it and replace it by a new, modern style house. The document below says it all. Elvis bought the home at 1174 N Hillcrest Rd, Beverly Hills, CA 90210 for $400,000 in 1967, the same year he married Priscilla.

Please sign up to the on-line Petition to save this great Elvis house -

"Stop the demolition of Elvis' beloved home!"
- This home is an important piece of not only Elvis' history but of history, overall. This home was loved by Elvis and he had some of his best times with his fans there. We all love it too! Until now, it's been preserved in almost the exact state it was in when Elvis owned it. We need to stop PETER MORTON (co-founder of Hard Rock Cafe) from destroying it! Please contact those involved and let them know how you feel!
We must act NOW!

New Guests Join Elvis Week Lineup: This year Elvis Week is August 10 - 17 and EPE have just announced new special guests who will be making an appearance for the first time.

- Ronnie Milsap - at the Official Elvis Insiders Event; Saturday, August 17

Six years later and after 10 successful feature films, she left Hollywood and joined the Abbey of Regina Laudis. Elvis Week "Elvis at Stax" special party in Stax Studios: In conjunction with the much-anticipated August 6th release of "Elvis At Stax," the 3-CD box set chronicling the music Elvis recorded at Stax Studios in July and December 1973, RCA/Legacy Recordings is hosting a very special listening party at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music on August Tuesday, August 13 at 4:00 p.m.
EPE say that "Fans will have an opportunity to stand in the very same spot where Elvis recorded the music they are hearing" - this is of course rubbish as the original Stax studios were unfortunately torn down in 1989 with the new "replica studios" built for the new Stax Museum opened in 2003.
However in addition to this you can witness stories and details behind the music and recording sessions from representatives of Sony (Ernst & Roger, no doubt) and special guest Norbert Putnam, who recorded with Elvis at Stax in December 1973 - so for music fans it really will be an interesting session to attend.
Admission to this event is free.

Graceland NOT for Sale: Several Elvis websites - as well as the UK's Financial Times - have incorrectly reported that Graceland is for sale. This is not true. In fact the reports notes, "A significant potential for expansion".
..  Elvis Presley’ EPE business and rights to the images of Elvis and Muhammad Ali are on the market with a possible price tag of more than $200m, people familiar with the process said.
Three people familiar with the process said Core Media Group, the entertainment group behind TV programmes such as American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, has begun approaching potential bidders from Asia, Europe and the US for Elvis Presley Enterprises and Muhammad Ali Enterprises.
Core, known as CKx before Apollo Global Management bought it for $509m in 2011, has appointed The Raine Group, a New York merchant bank, to review strategic alternatives, two of these people said. It is
testing the market but could keep both if it is unhappy with the offers it receives, they said, but Core hopes to focus on producing content for television and digital outlets. Core and Raine declined to comment.
More than 35 years after Presley’s death and 32 years after Ali’s retirement, the two assets generate revenues of about $60m a year and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of about $23m.
Despite global downturn, a record of stable, predictable cash flows and a history of revenue raising Elvis re-releases, people familiar with the Presley estate see significant potential for expansion if a buyer is willing to invest.
Possible investments include an Elvis-themed hotel near Graceland in Memphis, a stage show in an Asian casino hub suchas Macau, and digital and social media expansion. People
familiar with the estate add that per capita spending by Graceland’s 550,000 annual visitors is relatively low and could be improved. (EIN notes, Really!!??)
The Presley family, represented by the singer’s daughter, Lisa Marie, retained 15 per cent of the company when it sold the remainder to Robert Sillerman’s CKx for about $100m in 2004.
Sony Music’s Legacy Recordings division holds the rights to all Presley’s master recordings, and has overseen several reissues, including plans to release a deluxe edition of “Elvis at Stax” in August.
Core considered a bid for Endemol before the European television production company’s owners put sale talks on hold. A successful sale could raise proceeds for a renewed attempt to buy Endemol or other production businesses.
EIN notes that while the news report says that Elvis Presley Enterprises includes, More than 110,000 pieces of memorabilia, including 3,000 pieces of clothing and 30 vehicles; royalties from 24 films; and copyrights and royalties for 1,150 songs. - These like Graceland itself are NOT for sale.
Lisa Marie has noted, "Business-wise any company can always grow, what is predominately sacred and can never be touched is Graceland itself and its contents and artifacts and that is and remains mine and my family's forever.
Lisa Marie has also clarified after the sale to CKx, "The home Graceland is absolutely mine. Everything in it is mine. All of his personal things are mine."
No need to worry Elvis fans, this could mean even more Elvis!
