"September Nights" CD: The SR label announced their new release: recordings of Elvis' September 4, 1970 Dinner Show and September 7, 1970 Closing Show, both recorded live in Las Vegas.
The press-release: The forthcoming release from the "SR" label scheduled for the beginning of September is titled "September Nights" and will feature two unreleased shows from Las Vegas September 04, 1970 Dinner Show (part only) + the complete show from September 07, 1970 Closing Night. |
|
As everybody knows SR concentrates on the early 70's live period of Elvis' activity, trying to provide unreleased shows with Elvis at the top of his ability. In this our ninth release, we are proud to present two very rare shows, one complete and part of the second to give you a more complete view of the last part of Elvis’ August 1970 season. Despite being the end of the season, Elvis' love of singing is clear in these tapes and we are glad to give you the opportunity to listen to them.
The Dinner show from September 4th, as presented on this CD is almost complete, missing the last two tracks only. If we look closely at the late Vegas act of September 1970 we can see that Elvis although tired is still able to concentrate on the music to produce great shows. Elvis sings straight to the audience with pauses and jokes, but the performance is still solid and rough; the basic track listing is presented superbly. Songs like I got a Woman, You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling or Polk Salad Annie sound great; he presents the best of his repertoire from the season. The best song from this dinner show is without doubt the oldie “One Night” here performed in a very rough and concentrated way surely the best version of the season.
The Closing Show of a memorable season maybe the best one, although shorter with respect to the early shows and not of comparable intensity but still valuable. Elvis performs the show in essence as his greatest hits of the season and he performs it as only he can at that moment. Songs like I Just Can’t Help Believing’, You’ve Lost Than Loving Feeling’ and Polk Salad Annie sound solid and well performed overall with feeling, the same feeling the we find at the end with Bridge Over Troubled Water, the best song of the show.
These recordings come from an early generation copy of the master tape; the sound quality is very good considering the early season. The sound was restored in a studio to achieve the best possible results. We have spent hours in the studio over the digital restoration of the sound, to achieve the best possible results and to give you the chance to listen with pleasure.
For the Third time from this label, this new CD will come in a deluxe DIGIPACK, containing a collection of live unreleased photographs of the August season, with a wide spectrum of jumpsuits included.

This CD comes along with a beautiful full color booklet containing all necessary information about every track along with great pictures of Elvis. Also the lyrics to each song will be included - exactly transcribed word for word as Elvis did sing them!

ETA's could flood MySpace in EPE-News Corp. venture: There's going to be an Elvis karaoke contest on MySpace. That is not a joke. I can't seem to figure out whether it's trying to market Elvis to a younger generation or MySpace to an older one--or if it's just for kicks.
The News Corp.-owned social network, best known for attracting a demographic for whom the King has always been dead, announced Monday that it will be hosting an official Elvis karaoke competition for "Elvis Week 2008," which runs from August 9 to 17. It's in partnership with Elvis Presley Enterprises, and members can enter through August 4 by submitting videos of Elvis song performances to MySpace's karaoke site. Elvis Presley Enterprises, for that matter, has launched an official MySpace page as well.
The winner gets to perform live onstage at Elvis' historic Graceland home, backed by entertainers who actually performed with Elvis himself. Ten second-place winners get a DVD of Viva Las Vegas as well as some variety of MP3 player loaded with Elvis songs. Third-place prizes, of which there are 20, are one-year memberships to an "Official Elvis Insiders" club.
The contest is a singing one, not an impersonation one, but I'm presuming there will be plenty of video entrants decked out in sunglasses and gold-studded leather jackets. Let's hope they welcome contest entrants in Elvis regalia a little more warmly than they do with the media. (Almost Elvis, Source: Amber Smith)
Elvis will shake up Niagara Falls this fall: Hosted by the City of Niagara Falls and Celebrate Downtown, the Days of Elvis Festival will be held Sept. 5 through 7. Daily passes and weekend passes will be available through www.ticketmaster.ca. (News, Source: Niagara Falls Review)
A LITTLE MORE ACTION ON ELVIS: Wagerworks latest again salutes the king of rock 'n roll - IGT online gambling software provider subsidiary Wagerworks has released another slot themed on the king of rock, Elvis Presley, timed to resonate with the annual Elvis Week, when fans from all over the world celebrate the life and work of the deceased American artiste.
Branded 'Elvis - a little more action', the game features 50 pay-lines, stacked Wilds for combination wins and an Action Free Spins Bonus. This 5-reel, 5-credits-per-line game offers players a variety of opportunities, with each reel providing four or more stacked wild symbols that can trigger useful wins. Enhancing the presentation are colourful and relevant graphics and typical Presley hit music.
Ernie Lafky, Executive Producer of WagerWorks/IGT comments: “We take a great deal of time and pride in producing top quality imagery and sounds for our games. Peter Valsamis, audio designer, went to incredible lengths to make the music in our new Elvis game as authentic as possible. Great care was taken in using vintage instruments, microphones, studio gear and recording techniques true to the period of the original recording. The amazing soundtrack, combined with retro imagery, truly evokes 1960’s Las Vegas.”
The multi-denomination, multi-currency game offers a top award of up to 250 000 credits. Three bonus symbols appearing on the middle reels trigger the Action Free Spins Bonus, and players are awarded five free spins. The bonus reels are more lucrative than standard reels, with extra stacked wilds and extra bonus symbols. The free spins are recursive, meaning that players can potentially retrigger the Action Free Spins Bonus multiple times up to a maximum of 255 free spins. (News, Source: Online-Casinos.com)
Elvis letter for sale: The auction site R&R Enterprises has a unique piece of Elvis history in his auction catalogue. A handwritten letter by Elvis, mailed out from the Army to his girlfriend Frances Forbes, shortly after his mother passed away.
Elvis writes: “I can hardly wait till I am back singing and making movies.... I miss mother more over here than anything”
From the auction site:
Outstanding and very rare as signed “Love ya kids, Elvis Presley,” one lightly lined page, 8 x 10, no date [envelope postmarked November 14, 1958]. Elvis writes from Friedberg, Germany, to Frances Forbes in Memphis, heading the letter “Frances, Heidi, Gloria, Diane, Earl, Dottie, and the rest of the gang.”
|
|
In full: “Well I don’t know what ever made me write a letter but I guess it’s because I am so homesick and lonely. I just want to tell you that I miss and love you all very much, and I am just counting the hours until I can return and we will all be together again. I can hardly wait till I am back singing and making movies and above all seeing the old gang again. I guess I miss mother more over here than anything because I am just now realizing that she won’t ever be here anymore. I remember the last few wonderful days at Ft. Hood. Someday we will all look back and talk about it. Tell George, Allen, Lewis, Bobby, and little Billy I said hello and that I miss them very much. Also Uncle Travis and Loraine, and everybody at Graceland hello. If you see Uncle Vester and aunt [illegible] tell them I miss them. Tell Patsy I love her very, very much and to be a good little girl till I get home. Well I will go for now just wanted you all to know that I was thinking of you. All my love Frances.”
Elvis writes a few additional lines on the reverse:
“Have a merry Christmas kids, I wish I was with you, we’d have a ball, but maybe next Christmas. ‘Eri Vian Ditchi.’
Quote from ‘Hay Ears’ [“Memphis Mafia” member Alan Fortas, nephew of Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas]—‘I’d kill to go to Germany.’” Elvis was inducted into the Army on March 24, 1958, months before his mother’s death on August 14. After completing basic training at Fort Hood, Texas, he was posted to Friedberg, Germany with the Third Armored Division. Presley served with the division from October 1, 1958, until March 2, 1960; three days later, he was discharged from active duty with the rank of sergeant. The letter is accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Presley’s hand to Forbes, including his return address and signature, “Elvis Presley, Friedberg, Germany.” Also included is a copy of a snapshot of Elvis and Forbes embracing as they say goodbye in September 1958, before Presley shipped out, as well as a 2007 letter from Forbes, stating in part, “I received this letter in the late fall of 1958 and I have held on to it for 49 years.... The day I received the letter I didn’t believe it was real until I opened it and read it.... I immediately called George Klein & Alan Fortas ... they were as excited as I. We all knew we had something special because Elvis didn’t write letters. I was 15 years old and head over heels in love when Elvis left for Germany. I thought my life had ended until I received his letter.”
In very good condition, with intersecting folds, scattered light toning and staining, and some light creasing and handling wear. Letters by Elvis are of the greatest scarcity, as evidenced by the virtual absence of genuine examples on the market; Elvis’s cousin, Billy Smith, once remarked that if Elvis wrote ten letters in his lifetime, it would be a lot. The present example, so intimately documenting the personal side of Elvis’s military service and his fabled love for his mother, is, with his songs, among the most remarkable documents ever to come from the King’s pen. '68 at 40' released: Joe Tunzi's latest hardcover photobook has been released. Elvis Matters rates it a winner:
This one is already a winner. Tunzi releases one of his best books until now. The mix of pictures, text and documents is perfect. The text is written by director/producer Steve Binder. The book is setup as a diary, beginning with the very first negotiations and ending with looking back at the whole production. Binder documents his memories with lots of archive material. We’ll see his own handwritten notes from behind the control panel and we can read the first scenario’s, where the title ‘If I Can Dream’ was still blank and filled in with ‘Big Ballad’.
The pictures are page filling and from a never before seen quality. As if the book is not worth its money by itself, there is a picture of Steve and Elvis that was not published in the book. No ordinary postcard, but a full glossy signed 23x21cm photo.
If all releases are going to be on this level, we fans are going to be spoiled! (News, Source: Elvis Matters)

Parkes Elvis Festival helps town to major Tourism Award: Parkes, NSW (Australia) hosted more than 200 guests on Saturday evening for the inland NSW tourism industry's night of nights, the 2008 CountryLink Inland NSW Tourism Awards held at the Parkes Leagues Club.
The event has been touted by many regular attendees as the best so far in its five year history.
The awards have previously been held in Coonabarabran, Tamworth, Wagga, and Wentworth, the praise was heaped on Parkes on Saturday because of the calibre of entertainment, the seamless program of activities, and the famous Parkes hospitality.
The 'Viva Las Parkes' theming created a real spectacle, with guests glammed up and in the mood for a celebration. Elvis made a special appearance, accompanied by local band Risky Business, all of which was very well received. Master of Ceremonies, Mr Greg Page wowed the audience with tales from his travels around the world as a former Wiggle, and performed a couple of impromptu Wiggles favourites following pleas from the crowd.
When it came to the formal aspect of the evening, Parkes Shire fared very well, with three local operators receiving awards.
The local winners were:
. Dish Café in the 'Tourism Restaurants & Catering Services' category;
. CountryLink Parkes Elvis Festival in he 'Festivals & Events' category; and
. Newell Highway Promotions Committee in the 'Tourism Marketing' category.
According to Parkes Shire Tourism Manager Kelly Hendry, "this is the best result that Parkes has ever achieved at the Inland NSW Tourism Awards.
‘The operators can be very proud of their business achievements and success at this level".
Parkes also boasted three additional finalists - the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope Discovery Centre, Kadina Bed & Breakfast and Trundle Bush Tucker Day. These operators were thrilled to be recognised as finalists, and found the award submission process very valuable to their future business planning efforts.
From here, the Dish Café, CountryLink Parkes Elvis Festival, Newell Highway Promotions Committee and CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope Discovery Centre will proceed to the state tourism awards. The Dish Café, CountryLink Parkes Elvis Festival, and Newell Highway Promotions Committee receive automatic finalist status at this next level. The CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope Discovery Centre will also re-work its submission to reflect an altered qualifying period, and believe that they can up the ante and be competitive at this next level.
"Overall we were very pleased that Parkes was chosen to host this event. Whilst it has been many months in the making, and a lot of work for Parkes Visitor Information Centre, the positive feedback has certainly made it all worth it," said Kelly.
"The evening not only boosted visitation and enhanced accommodation occupancy, but allowed us to showcase what Parkes is about and what we have to offer to leading tourism operators throughout the state. Whilst most attendees had visited Parkes on previous occasions, for some this was their first visit. Everyone was amazed at the effort and preparation that had gone into gala awards ceremony and offered praise and acclaim to Parkes for hosting such a successful and enjoyable event. Guests also enjoyed our tourism attractions, retail and hospitality outlets whilst in town,” Kelly said. (News, Source: Parkes Champion-Post)

Tupelo Festival to save 50% of profits: The Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association has decided to squirrel away half of its profits from the 2008 Elvis Presley Festival. DTMSA President Camille Sloan said the exact numbers aren't in yet from the June event, but the organization expects profits to be around $80,000. It's a big turnaround for the festival, which lost about $46,000 last year.
In addition to putting money in a rainy day fund, Sloan said the board of directors approved spending up to 25 percent on a "tangible, visible investment" in downtown Tupelo and up to another 25 percent on a new position at Main Street.
If profits do come in at $80,000, Main Street's allocations mean $40,000 will be put in savings while up to $20,000 will be spent downtown. Up to $20,000 more will be devoted to a new position on the DTMSA staff. Sloan said the organization has not decided what the "tangible, visible investment" will be, but said she has received multiple suggestions.
At the organization's board meeting earlier this month, members discussed options that included hanging flower baskets, adding green spaces or sprucing up current ones, renovating the facade of the DTMSA office on Broadway and installing benches and trash cans. Family-oriented changes for Collingwood Elvis Festival: Serious Elvis partiers will be shakin' their booty in a new, bigger venue this year. The big beer garden is moving over from the Pine Street parking lot to Ste. Marie Street parking lot to make room for a new family venue. The St. Marie Street venue has room for up to 2,500 people -- 300 more than Pine Street. The change is in conjunction with the festival's major sponsor, Sirius Satellite Radio, and a plan to highlight Canadian talent while creating more free and inexpensive activities for families and for every budget.
Festival general manager Rosemarie O'Brien said the Pine Street parking lot will feature a 'Canadian Star Stage' all weekend, with a mixed bag of entertainment including martial art demonstrations, Canadian bands and performers.
On Friday night it will serve as a practice stage for the performers and Saturday, there will be non-stop Elvis performances from noon until 6 p. m. as part of the free Family Venue Tour of performers. From 8 p.m. until midnight, Mike Cadillac and the 88's from New Brunswick will perform; this is tribute artist Mike Bravener's actual band which plays a lot of music from the 1950s and '60s.
On Sunday the Canadian Star Stage will feature the Youth Talent Showcase from 9 until 11 a.m., and the Family Venue Tour of performers from 11 a. m. until 5 p.m. O'Brien says the Youth Talent Showcase may include some Elvis related acts but they don't have to be. Young people can register on-line for the showcase, at the municipal office this week or register the day of. It costs just $10 and each performer will receive a goodie bag filled with products donated by local businesses.
The new Ste. Marie Street venue will feature a giant beer garden all weekend, with a Street Party Video Feed on Friday night. This year, 133 tribute artists are expected to perform and the festival begins with each one performing on the Hurontario Street Stage beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday the St. Marie Stage will feature the qualifying round of the competition from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. There will be a $5 gate charge for this venue. Sunday features the semi-final competition round for tribute artists. The finals take place in the Eddie Bush Memorial Arena later that evening.
Back by popular demand is the 'Mountainview Revival Stage' at the end of Hurontario Street. This stage and beer garden will feature 'The Champions Tour' Friday and Saturday night, with a special afternoon show Saturday featuring Ray Guillemette Jr. with general admission seating for $25.
Festival venues include the Curling Club, Eddie Bush Arena, Gayety Theatre, Olde Town Terrace, Collingwood Legion, Village at Blue, Cranberry Resort, and Georgian Manor for shows or performances on the Venue Tour. Regional venues feature Saturday night performances by Anthony Von at the Meaford Opera House, and Gino Monopoli at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex.
There will be two VIP's at the festival this year. Cynthia Pepper, co-star of Elvis' movieKissing Cousins, returns to Collingwood to do a meet and greet on Saturday at the Gayety Theatre between noon and 1 p. m., which will be followed by a free showing of the movie. All are welcome. The second festival VIP is Patti Parry -- the only female member of the 'Memphis Mafia', Elvis' personal friends and staff members. The Memphis Mafia was a nick-name given to the group by the King himself.
Beginning Thursday night, the Gayety Theatre will be host Spending an Evening with Elvis performances, twice each evening at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Each show will feature four different champions for just $10 admission. Don't miss 'Inspirational Elvis', the Gospel Competition on Sunday at Eddie Bush Arena -- this is the fourth annual event featuring invitation-only contestants. This event will be hosted by the 2007 Gospel Champion Anthony Von.

Complete '68 Comeback Special Boxset: Rogier Van Luyken tells EIN: The '68 Comeback Special Boxsets are rolling out of the factory and have arrived at the SONY/BMG headquarters, at least here in Holland they have. This is what the Boxset looks like and it is looking quite stunning! This release, aimed at the general public, certainly fits nicely next to the Complete '68 Special Dvd Boxset.

Elvis & Priscilla's Honeymoon Hideaway opening in August: Visiting Palm Springs next August? Here’s a suggestion: Elvis’s so-called Honeymoon Hideaway at 1350 Ladera Circle opens its doors to the public. A tour of the house costs you 25 $US, the Indoor Gospel Concert (4 – 7 pm) another 50 $US. More info at www.elvishoneymoon.com.
History: On September 16, 1966, Elvis leased the estate at 1350 Ladera Circle, Palm Springs, California for one year for $21,000. Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis's manager, lived in the neighborhood and he thought that it would be the perfect place for Elvis to relax, entertain his friends and escape from Hollywood.
However, Rona Barrett, the famous Hollywood gossip columnist, also lived around the corner. She became suspicious that Elvis and Priscilla were going to be married when Priscilla Beaulieu arrived on the weekend of April 29th 1967 with her entire family. Elvis' entourage also began to assemble (Joan and Joe Esposito, George Klein, Sandy and Jerry Schilling, Marty Lacker, Dee and Vernon Presley). |
|
Apparently "Miss Rona" even had the estate's maid followed in order to find out when and where the wedding would take place. Then she announced on her nightly television broadcast that "the King and Priscilla are to be married in Palm Springs."Originally the plan was to have the wedding and reception take place around the pool at the estate but because of the onslaught of the press and media, Colonel Parker arranged for Elvis and Priscilla to be married in Las Vegas. Escorted by Joe Espositio, the best man, they slipped out of the house at 3:00 a.m. on Monday morning, May 1st, 1967, going out the back way, by the pool and across the fruit orchard to Rose Avenue where limos were waiting to drive them to the airport. They flew to Las Vegas in Frank Sinatra's Lear jet, the "Christina", and by 4:00 a.m. the marriage license was obtained at the court house. At 9:40 a.m. the wedding ceremony took place at the Aladdin Hotel, in owner Milton Prell's suite. The ceremony was followed by a breakfast reception for approximately 100 guests. On the same day, May 1, 1967, at 2:50 p.m., Elvis and Priscilla flew back to Palm Springs to begin their honeymoon.
Elvis carried Priscilla over the threshold and up the stairs of the Honeymoon Hideaway singing "The Hawaiian Wedding Song". Lisa Marie was born on February 1, 1968, exactly 9 months from the date of the honeymoon. The next day Elvis went to United Artists in L.A. to finish "Clambake" and then hurried back to Palm Springs the same evening. It is believed that the "1968 Comeback Special" was planned during the many months he spent at the estate. After this concert Elvis made numerous personal and concert appearances which led to him becoming the "Entertainer of the Century".
Elvis loved Palm Springs! Elvis' favorite time of the year was the summer, even thought he wasn't too fond of the heat. He resolved this problem by installing hotel-style air-conditioning units throughout the estate and he would keep the thermostat constantly low. His friends constantly commented that the house was like "a meat locker". Elvis often sang gospel music in the living room until dawn. Elvis at times would ride his Harley-Davidson to downtown Palm Springs for ice cream and at other times he would go to a bookstore called Bookland. Occasionally he would visit Colonel Tom Parker, his manager, who resided around the corner. One day Elvis saw Robert Goulet on TV and he jokingly shot a gun at the TV screen. Later that evening he went to an appliance store in Indian Canyon and bought 10 TVs. Elvis had fun racing go-carts in Palm Springs at Camelot Park on E. Palm Canyon Drive. At the Indio Casino, Elvis played blackjack. He liked the game so much, that when he was in Vegas he had a blackjack table put in his Hilton suit. (News, Source: Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway Tours)

The other side fell on the carport side near the vip area. Look at the picture close: there is a golf cart sitting under it that a supervisor had just gotten off of. The fence was not damaged at all. (News, Source: Elvis News) |

Warners Brothers still NOT considering 'Elvis On Tour' DVD release: UK Warner Brothers Customer relations manager Jacqueline Allan recently stated "We have no plans to release anything further at present" to super-fan Brian Quinn.
There were rumours that EPE's Todd Morgan was involved in the possible 'On Tour' DVD release but sadly he passed away earlier this year. However with DVD sales on the increase, yet CD sales fast-declining, there should be hope that Warners Brothers would be considering a release of this long-anticipated DVD.
As far back as 2002 Ernst Jorgensen stated the following. .
-
"‘On Tour’ is a little bit complicated. Obviously everybody, including Roger and I, thought that this 2002 would be the year. Especially when Turner recreated TTWII it was with hope of critical acclaim and financial rewards for Turner and although I think TTWII has done fairly well it was never a big commercial success. And talking about an investment and recreating TTWII for 1.3 or 1.4 Million dollars financing ‘On Tour’ on the back of something that didn’t sell well … and to a lot of commercial peoples thinking it’s somewhat better than ‘On Tour’ – it’s a younger Elvis, a leaner Elvis in TTWII. They are very nervous about putting out ‘On Tour’ and spending the same kind of money.
So they are trying to find a way to make ‘Elvis On Tour’ available in digital format but it’s not going to be a restoration for scratch like TTWII.
The reason why we haven’t put out anything on either FTD or RCA at this time is that we would ideally like to do it with them. So we are giving them a little more time but eventually if they don’t come around, we will release the material that we have which is pretty substantial."
Six years later FTD/BMG are still holding back on their 'On Tour' CD box-set and waiting for the DVD release. It's enough to make an Elvis fan cranky!

'A Greensboro Revolution!' New Madison Import CD: Here is the cover art of next Madison release A Greensboro Revolution! - Standing Room Only Tapes, Volume One. It will be released soon and Volume Two should follow 3-4 weeks after.
This sparkling performance, recorded in Greensboro, NC on Friday, April 14, 1972, in the presence of MGM's documentary cameras, has been issued many times in the past, but never in such GREAT SOUND QUALITY. For the very first time, hear the show mixed down from MGM multi-track tapes into superb STEREO.
The April 1972 tour was Presley's first of the year. And he was ready. Three outstanding performances from this gig made the final cut of "Elvis On Tour" -- "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "An American Trilogy" and "Funny How Time Slips Away." In 1992, "The Lost Performances" gave fans a fourth visual, with the inclusion of "Release Me." All are here, and the entire evening is a delight.

'Elvis' sculpture stars in auction: An ancient marble sculpture with an uncanny likeness to Elvis Presley is to go under the hammer at the London auction of a major Australian art dealer's collection.
Graham Geddes is expected to pick up more than $2 million by selling off more than 150 Greek vases and Roman marble reliefs at the Bonhams auction in October.
The Elvis-like marble sculpture, complete with a quiff similar to that favoured by The King, is believed to be about 1,800 years old and worth S50,000 - $70,800.
So strong is the likeness, Geddes himself nicknamed the Roman marble acroterion - a carved head from a stone tomb or burial chamber - "Elvis".
"Fans of the King of rock 'n roll, seeing this face from the distant past will be forgiven for thinking that their idol may well have lived a previous life in Rome," a Bonhams spokesman said.
Geddes, who has an antiques showroom in Melbourne, has been collecting since the 1960s. (News, Source;MariaSykes)

'Raised On Vegas' new Czech CD: More information about the new Memory Records CD, recorded live at the Hilton Hotel, Aug 8, 1973, Opening night. An audience recording. Between July 21-24, 1973 Elvis recorded 10 tracks at the legendary Stax Studios in Memphis, Tennessee - but only one of these made it into his live act: "Raised On Rock". Just a few weeks after these sessions, on August 6th, Elvis opened another "Las Vegas Summer Festival" with the rather unique concert presented on this CD. During this unusual show, Elvis performed "Trouble" from "King Creole" (1958) and segued straight into the recent "Raised On Rock". This is the only known live performance of the latter song. Later in the show Elvis surprised his audience with another live rarity: "Memphis Tennessee". Elvis also introduced a contemporary favorite of his, "My Boy", a rather hesitantly performed version that predates his studio-version by four months.
1973 was a very busy year for Elvis. The triumph of the "Aloha" show was followed by two Las Vegas seasons, two long tours, July, September and December recording sessions, hospitalization for detoxification as well as the October divorce. |
|
Elvis was truly caught in a trap, both professionally and personally. By now, he was just as fed up with the glitter and artificiality of Vegas as he’d been of the "Travelogue" movies just a few years earlier. Nevertheless, his opening and closing concerts in Vegas were always special events and this one is no exception! Go here for EIN's close look at the Closing Night FTD & Concert review
This recording was taken from an early generation copy of the original master tape as recorded by a member of the audience. The tape source is independent and of much better quality, than the first bootleg release of this show ("FIRE IN VEGAS" - 1993). All tracks were digitally restored for your best possible listening pleasure and the speed was corrected. All accompanying photographs were taken between April and August 1973.
Tracks: 1. Also Sprach Zarathustra - 2. C.C Rider - 3. Trouble (1st live version) - 4. Raised On Rock (only live version) - 5. Love Me - 6. Steamroller Blues - 7. What Now My Love - 8. Sam Phillips pioneer's Stamp should be Officially Recognized: In less than 2 weeks, a five year anniversary will dawn upon us. On July 30, 2003 the man hailed as the Father of Rock n' Roll passed away. Sam Phillips was 80 years old.
Phillips was the front man who launched the careers of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and a host of other legendary Rock, Rhythm and Blues greats at a small store front studio called Memphis Recording Service. Phillips, whose motto was 'We Record Anything, Anywhere, Anytime,' began his business just making records with some of the legendary unrefined black artists such as Howlin' Wolf, James Cotton, Willie Nix, Rosco Gordon and Rufus Thomas. Phillips' ambition was to bring out of all of his artists, what they didn't really know that they had in themselves.
"Sam Phillips made his ‘stamp' on society when change was not of the essence in the segregated South of 1950's America," said Liz Scott, who is a postal activist and the woman who is coordinating the Sam Phillips U.S. Commemorative Postage Stamp Campaign. |
|
"Sam was not interested in doing the same things that had already been done in music. What Sam set out to do was to give the young people of the era something that they could call their own," said Scott. "Sam's gut instinct was to blend various kinds of music; Country, Gospel, Rhythm and Blues. This blend gave birth to Rock n' Roll, something that allowed the young people of the day to experience a freedom of their own true expression."
According to the USPS, commemorative postage stamps honoring a notable and famous American subject will usually be issued on or in conjunction with the individual or subject's birth or a significant anniversary. No stamp will be issued sooner than 5 years after an individual's death. So far, 9,078 people from around the world have hand signed a petition Scott has been passing around at several music themed events. That total does not include the 966 signatures currently on a web site petition portal called www.gopetition.com. "Sam was an American original and a genuine music pioneer," said David Johnson, executive director of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. "He's certainly one of Alabama's most significant contributors to the world of music. It's impossible to imagine popular music over the past 50 years without the tremendous impact of Sam Phillips and Sun Records. It's an honor for us to call him one of our own and to keep celebrating his incredible legacy."
Phillips' oldest son, Knox Phillips said of his father, "His idea was to work with people whose principles and values mirrored his own. You could boil it down to the principles he had learned from the Phillips family, which is integrity and individuality to the extreme," said Phillips. "He wasn't interested in working with polished musicians and he wasn't interested in taking someone who was already a star and trying to refine his art. What he was committed to was the same thing his mother and father taught him from childhood; a search for the truth."
If you would like more information about the Sam Phillips U.S. Postage Stamp Campaign, or to schedule an interview with Liz Scott, please call her at (256) 766-2913 or email Liz at samphillipsstampusa@live.com. Or click here to visit her MySpace site (News, Source;EPE) |

New DVD highlights Elvis' jumpsuits.......Elvis - The Jumpsuitology Vol. 1 - 1969 - 1972.....dedicated to Bill Belew:
"Elvis - The Jumpsuitology" is the anthology of Elvis' stage outfits used during all the 1145 live appearances from 1969 to 1977. It is first ever comprehensive DVD project highlighting this aspect of Elvis’ career. The producers spent several months on research and obtaining materials, and then spent more than 250 hours in a professional studio for restoration and putting the DVD together.
The first volume of the DVD focuses on the years 1969 - 1972. There’s brief, but relevant information on each concert tour, as well as the Las Vegas or Lake Tahoe engagements, all followed by specially assorted good quality photos of the jumpsuits used for each tour or engagement. There are more than 250 photos (some rare) of all the 110 versions of the suits, he Jumpsuitology the first "Herringbone" and "Cisco Kid" suits, the August '72 "Two - Piece" suits and all others.
The video section contains more than 30 rare clips (mostly 8 mm amateur footage) of Elvis on stage in different suits. Every piece of film was carefully selected, edited and professionally restored in a studio and every effort has been made to achieve the highest possible picture quality, nevertheless in few cases producers decided to use substandard quality material in order to maintain the integrity of the project.
Musical background on DVD is by fine U.K. tribute artist Heath Ashton.

Elvis, Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, Sonny Burgess played at King of Clubs: Ask almost any area resident and they likely will know of the club near the railroad tracks between farmland and flatland along state Highway 67 in Swifton. They will likely know who owned it, too. Bob King, who owned and operated the King of Clubs for more than 50 years, died Monday. He was 83.
“He was one the best club owners I ever knew,” said friend and musician Sonny Burgess of Newport. “He was a great guy — a good friend. He’ll be missed by all that knew him.”
In a 2006 interview, King reminisced at home about his days as the area’s well-known club owner. With a head full of gray hair and sitting at his kitchen table, King was eager to talk to anyone willing to listen. Next door stands the business he is known for — but what bothered King the most was not being able to leave home on his own.
“I told (my wife) Evelyn I get so tired sitting and looking out that window knowing I cannot get up and walk through that door,” he said. |
|
Born in 1924 at Battle Axe and raised in Swifton, it wasn’t hard for King to recall things that happened 50 years ago. Sept. 20, 1951 was a date that King remembered well because it was the day he opened the brick, one-story building that has had several names over the years. From the B&I Club to the King of Clubs, most people have heard of “Bob King’s.” Minutes into conversation, King said he never had aspirations of being a club owner at 26 years old.
“Way back then I was a farmer. I worked and lived on the farm until I went into the Navy. It was rough just like it was everywhere else — I guess everywhere else,” he said. “All you had was what you worked hard for and that wasn’t much. It wasn’t like it is now.”
After serving during World War II in the South Pacific, King and his brother bought a café in Swifton. The location seemed to be a pretty good part of the country for it, he said. Looking back, “We’ve had a pretty good business,” he said. But it’s the people who have passed through its doors that has made Bob King’s nightclub a place of history to many.
The idea for entertainment, however, was something that King never considered until he was approached by Burgess, who was looking for places to play with his newly formed band. For $10 apiece, Burgess, Kern Kennedy, Russ Smith and Johnny Ray Hubbard performed for what Burgess called, “a redneck crowd” on Friday nights.
“They’d come out of the farms and they’d get drunk. They’d bring their babies in there and they’d set them on the table and go and dance,” he said.
On his first visit, Burgess remembered that the closer he got, the building’s screened-in front door looked as if it would explode. “There were a couple of men fighting and Bob was right in the middle of them trying to stop it” as Burgess entered the club. “Bob was tough back in those days.”
On one December night in 1955, Burgess said the club was so packed that “you could not believe how many people were there.” That night, a 20-year-old Elvis Presley, who had just signed a contract with RCA-Victor the month before, gyrated on King’s stage for $450. Burgess and his band, the Moonlighters, backed Presley that night. The following year, they recorded on the Sun record label in Memphis that discovered Presley, releasing “We Wanna Boogie,” and “Red-Headed Woman” under the name Sonny Burgess and the Pacers.
King recalled Johnny Cash being there the night Elvis performed. Cash had opened for Presley at Swifton High School earlier that day, and “Elvis asked me if I’d give Johnny $10 to get him to sing a song,” King said.
“I told him no, I’d give him $20 to sing three songs.”
“He (Elvis) was friendly. Jerry Lee Lewis was the silly one,” King said, laughing.
Lewis, with his unique piano style, would play the instrument with his feet and the piano strings almost always would be broken afterwards, King said.
“I liked him as far as that goes. He played quite a few times ... Every time, I had to get Kern Kennedy (Burgess’ piano player) to replace the strings.”
While King has never taken full credit for the club’s longevity, he was always the first to tell people that Evelyn was the club’s lasting force. Conversation about King with those who worked for him does not go far without mention of her. Married in 1956, King first hired Evelyn as a waitress in late 1955.
“It wasn’t a bad decision I made either,” King chuckled in 2006. “I have a wonderful little woman.”
Doug Greeno of Weiner, who was part of King’s house band in the late 1960s, said Bob and Evelyn were wonderful and great to work for. “They were good to me just like family,” he said this week.
“You can’t beat Bob,” Greeno said. King gave a lot of money away over the years. “If something happened to someone, he would give money from his own pocket or help raise money for them.”
King said in 2006 one of the best things about the club is how good people had been to him.
“When we first went in business, people were different then they are now — a lot different,” King said.
In the early days, when crowds got rowdy and people began fighting, King would tell them to go outside and settle it. The loser then had to buy everyone a beer.
“Sometimes THAT would settle it,” he said, laughing. “Everybody gets in trouble every once in awhile. I don’t expect that not to happen,” he said. “But most of them will come in and apologize to ya’ and say it won’t ever happen again.”
Harold Jenkins never forgot when he gambled away all of his and his band’s money behind the club after a show in the 1950s. King told Jenkins, later known as Conway Twitty, that he would replace the money so Jenkins could pay his band members, if the singer promised to never gamble again. The two remained in contact over the years, and anytime King saw him, Twitty recalled that night and the promise he made. After a show in Branson, Mo., King said Twitty told him, “‘I promised you I wouldn’t and I haven’t.’” That was a year before Twitty’s death in 1993, and the last time King saw his friend.
The business was sold and split in 2003. It is now called the King of Clubs and King’s Capri. King was pleased the club lasted 55 years and wasn’t surprised by its longevity.
“It has lasted this long because it had some good managers,” King said. “There aren’t too many people who can run a club right. What I’ve done all my life is run that club. It’s my life — 55 years behind a beer joint,” he said with a laugh.
Husband, father of three and friend, he was many things to many people. However, King’s best known role will probably always be club owner. King’s second cousin, Mike Baker of Alicia, said King was a good man who will be missed.
“He would help anyone he could,” Baker said, recalling the times when King would let him and others “get all the sodas we could get. When you’re young, that’s a big thing,” he said.
Burgess was among those featured in “Good Rockin’ Tonight: The Legacy Of Sun Records,” a television documentary filmed in the King of Clubs in 2000 about some of Sun’s artists. The documentary, aired nationwide on PBS, along with half-hour interviews with some of the artists, is now available on DVD. Burgess credited King for giving him and the Pacers, as well as other young artists, the opportunity to cultivate their talents all those years ago.
“He was one the best guys in the music business,” Burgess said. “He was good-hearted. It’s tough to lose him.” (Source: guardonline.com)
'Elvis: Return to Tupelo' now available on DVD: The new recut documentary about Elvis' years in Tupelo and his first years in Memphis entitled "Elvis: Return to Tupelo" is now available on DVD. The story traces the Elvis saga from his birth during the depths of the Depression, to his move to Memphis, to his formative high school years, through his early struggles to launch a music career and wraps up with his triumphant homecoming concert in 1956, on the same stage where he’d lost a talent contest eleven years earlier. It’s a little known story that while inextricably linked to an era and a place still resonates today.
Working with Tupelo historian Roy Turner, director and producer Michael Rose premiered this updated documentary at this years' Tupelo Film Festival. Rose has won numerous awards over the years including an Emmy, two Cine Golden Eagles, several educational film awards and he’s had his films screened at international film festivals.

EU 'Public Domain' ruling likely to change: Ageing rock stars and session musicians will keep receiving royalties for their old recordings for the rest of their lives under a European Union plan. Performers currently lose the rights to their recordings after 50 years. This has placed all of Elvis' earlier fifties recordings into the Public Domain. Strangely the recent official release of the "hit" remix of 'Baby Let's Play House' only happened because of this ruling! Elvis will no longer have to look over his shoulder to see who is exploiting his old recordings - although BMG are often accused of doing this for years.
Now veteran artists like Sir Cliff Richard and Roger Daltrey are among those who have campaigned for it to be extended. The EU has now announced a scheme for copyright on recordings to last for 95 years. EU governments and the European Parliament still need to give approval. Under the current regime, the first rock 'n' roll recordings will go out of copyright in the coming years.
That means performers, producers and record labels would no longer get paid for sales or airplay, and the songs could be released cheaply by any record label.
A 95-year term would bridge the income gap that performers face when they turn 70, just as their early performances recorded in their 20s would lose protection.
|
|
Sir Cliff's first hits will go out of copyright on 1 January next year, while The Beatles' catalogue will start to enter the public domain in 2013. Sir Paul McCartney and U2 have also spoken out in favour of extending the copyright.
But the EU plan is potentially more important for the thousands of lesser-known band members, session musicians and producers who may be in greater need of an income during their retirement. The proposals were unveiled by European Commission Single Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy. "A 95-year term would bridge the income gap that performers face when they turn 70, just as their early performances recorded in their 20s would lose protection," his scheme said.
Former Undertones singer Feargal Sharkey, now chief executive of British Music Rights, welcomed the move. He said: "I am especially pleased that the announcement focuses on the 'invisible' members of our industry - the musicians, engineers and session players whose names are hidden away in the liner notes and credits. "It is they, and not just 'featured' artists and record labels, who could derive real benefits from this move - and at a time in life when their earning power would be severely diminished."
The BPI, which represents British record labels, said the change would "ensure that our performers and labels are no longer treated as the second class citizens in the copyright world".
But the UK government, which rejected its own extension to the copyright term last year, said it was "not convinced" that there was an economic case for the move.
When it looked into the matter, the government said most artists would not benefit from an extension because of their record contracts. Most musicians had contracts requiring them to pass royalties back to their record labels, the government said.
It also concluded that an extension would lead to increased costs for consumers, who would be forced to pay for royalties for longer.
And Anthony Baldwin, a musician and sound engineer who restores old recordings, told The Times: "If the legislation gets through, you can say goodbye to independent European vintage CD reissues." Separate royalties are paid for songwriting. Those payments will continue for 70 years after the death of the writer. (News, Source;BBC) |

Elvis' 1972 Cadillac Custom Wagon sold on EBay! In 1972 the American Sunroof Company made two custom station wagons from Cadillac Deville sedans. One was built for Elvis the other for Dean Martin. The vehicle was delivered to Elvis in Palm Springs California and used by him around town. It then stayed at Colonel Parker's House In Las Vegas. Elvis in fact tried to give it to the Colonel as a present but because the King kept "borrowing it back" the Colonel didn't want to keep it at his house in Vegas. When in Vegas Elvis used this vehicle to cart friends around between shows at the Hilton. The car even had its own carpeted parking space. The car stayed in Vegas until 1976 when it was shipped back to Graceland where it remained until 1981. |
|
The car sold before the auction ended - the suggested price was $60,000.
Additional Elvis Memorabilia that came with the purchase included;
> Elvis Auction 200 page Book published by Guernsey with Pictures of the Vehicle and Listing Information
> Original Tennessee Title with Elvis Presley Museum on it.
> Copy of A letter from the President of Graceland that provides details about this vehicle
> Copy of an Insurance Policy Application from 1972 for the car in the name of Elvis and Vernon Presley
> A Poster Size Mounted Picture of this Station Wagon in front of the Graceland Mansion.
> A Picture of Elvis getting in to the car talking to friends.
> UNCUT Gold Cadillac Keys that Came with the car.
> A pair of Elvis Presley Signature Gold Sun Glasses.

The 14th Collingwood Elvis Festival: The countdown is on for the Collingwood Elvis Festival that runs July 24 to 27th.
The first year of the festival was 1995, and it was held at the Vacation Inn. It was called the Canadian Elvis Tribute and Convention, and was promoted by tribute artist Billy Cann. The name was changed in 1996 to the Canadian National Elvis Tribute and Convention Ball, and was held at the Collingwood Curling Club. By 1998, it was called the Collingwood Elvis Festival, and was owned with a 50 per cent share by the Collingwood and District Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Collingwood BIA. The theme that year was the Elvis Comeback Special 1968.
Every year thereafter, the festival had a theme. In 2002, the 25th anniversary of Elvis' death was honoured; while 2004 celebrated the 10th anniversary of the festival. This year, they celebrate the 14th year of the festival and expect numbers to top all previous years. The overall highest scoring Collingwood Elvis Festival champion will win a $3,000 cash prize this year, compliments of SIRIUS Canada. They will also receive automatic entry into The 2008 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest during Elvis Week in Memphis on Aug. 13 and 14. Go here for more details (News, Source;EIN/SanjaM) |

Spankox Remixes finally gets UK release: From the press-release: Recognised worldwide as one of the most influential figures in music and pop culture, Elvis Presley is today on the verge of another milestone. 30 years after his death, Presley's classic 'Baby Let's Play House' single remixed by progressive DJ/Producer Spankox, will receive it's Sept 1 2008 debut as the first Vinyl/CD single to be released in the UK.
The 'Baby Let's Play House' Spankox remix release on Vinyl/CD is a special compact disc (CD) playable on a normal CD player, and on a traditional record turntable too. This brand new media boasts one A side (vinyl) and one B side (CD). (EIN thinks this should have been released when the single was #1 in Italy and may be too late to hit the charts.)
Hot on the heels of the Sept 1 single release comes yet another milestone, the historic release of the first official "Elvis Presley remix" album. Elvis vs Spankox 'Re:Versions' will debut in the UK on September 8 2008, released by SonyBMG. The limited edition of the album features 11 tracks, plus a bonus videoclip of the single 'Baby Let's Play House' plus 24 page booklet and housed in a specially printed PVC case. 'Raised On Rock' new Memory Records CD: The Czech Memory Records label are re-issuing Elvis' 1973 Vegas Opening Show from August 6, 1973. Although previously released in poor quality sound as the 'Fire In Vegas' bootleg back in 1993 this re-issue promises to be from the first generation copy. The show is interesting for having Elvis' first live version of 'Trouble', 'My Boy' as well as his only live attempt at 'Raised On Rock'. Summer season in Vegas 1973 was an interesting and emotional ride for Elvis cumulating in the extra-ordinary 'Closing Night' as featured in the FTD of the same name. Go here for a look at 'Closing Night'.

Memphis Horns to be Inducted into the Musicans Hall Of Fame: The Memphis Horns are among the 2008 inductees of the Musicians Hall of Fame, along with STAX's Booker T & the MGs on October 28th. The Memphis Horns played a significant part on Elvis' 1969 soulful Memphis Sessions and they have made their mark on the history of rock & roll with a heavy dose of soul for 42 years. During this time, they performed with 32 members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and lent their signature sound to 14 Grammy-winning songs, 52 Number Ones and 113 Top Tens. Together and apart they’ve played on 83 Gold and Platinum records (well over 40 million albums sold!).
The Memphis Horns are the quintessential Memphis music combination - Andrew Love, tall, black and as mellow as one of his tenor sax solos; Wayne Jackson, (right with Elvis) short, white and as intense as one of his trumpet blasts. Together they were reared in all that Memphis music had to offer. |
|
Wayne Jackson has played with all the greats from Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Neil Diamond to Elvis Presley. Playing with The Memphis Horns, Wayne's sweet trumpet is one of the most recognised soulful sounds in the last 50 years of pop music. He has played on over 300 Number 1 records and still is one of the nicest people you could ever meet.
Wayne Jackson knew Elvis from an early age, and not only played on some of Elvis' greatest songs but was also a visitor to Graceland and has some great insights into music and the man. Go here for EIN's in-depth interview with Wayne Jackson. (News, Source;EIN/ElvisMatters) |
'Colonel Parker’s Boy' new import CD: From the Memphis Flash label comes 'Colonel Parker's Boy' import CD. For the first time ever on CD is the new duet version of 'Edge Of Reality' plus two never before heard interviews with Elvis' manager Colonel Tom Parker from 1987. The sound quality should be very good on all the tracks. EIN - The tracklist gives me a 'Suspicious Mind' as there seems to be lots of strange takes.

Elvis' Harley-Davidson featured in new museum in Milwaukee: Milwaukee's new Harley-Davidson Museum opens this Saturday. Among the motorcycles is the oldest Harley: Serial Number One. It's a pedal bike with a small engine, built by company founders William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson inside a 10-by-15-foot wooden shed that had the words "Harley-Davidson Motor Company" scrawled on the door.
Also featured is Elvis Presley's red and white 1956 Model KH, along with its January 1956 paperwork, which notes he bought it from a Memphis dealer, his payments were $50.15 a month and lists his occupation as a "vocalist-self-employed."
His reason for buying: "pleasure and business." Elvis bought it just a few months before his breakthrough single "Heartbreak Hotel" hit the top of the charts
"It was like he knew he was on his way and he wasn't going to Disneyland," Bortner said. "He was going to the dealership."
Elvis was on the cover of Harley-Davidson's magazine, The Enthusiast, in May 1956 -- an artefact also at the museum.
A video screen features classic Harley moments in television and movies. Harleys have appeared in classics such as "Easy Rider," and "Pulp Fiction" and there are animated versions in "The Simpsons" TV show and movie. This year, Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf rode one in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."
Ten motorcycles from throughout the years give museumgoers a chance to feel a Harley beneath them. Go here for more details. (News, Source;EIN/SanjaM) |

Details on 'You Know, It Don't Have To Be Strictly Country' CD: Here is a preview of the cover art plus a press-release for the Gravel Road Music release due this month. See below for track details.
Press-release: - After 38 years, Elvis' voice remains impressive on each track! It easily could have been recorded yesterday.
These are the first 22 amazing tracks collected from private collections of which many for the first time in this shape on CD. These are the acetates which Elvis took home to play-back and agreed to be released!
All tracks have been digitally restored and re-mastered. These acetates often sounded better & different than what we know and made it to the final release!
Some previously released tracks are here for the first time in their more complete form. This includes studio talk, count in, left & right channels, longer fade outs or even different lyrics or simply differently sung. Most are in stereo.
The first masters without dubbing, repairs in their complete form. Unfortunately we don't have every master on acetate of the June and September sessions. So we added some first takes to cover all songs. Also a few tracks of work in progress, a rare chance to hear, a song still being built up to a complete dubbed master. Guide-strings, -horns, -backing vocals, the talking, it's all there!
Background information; It's a public known fact that Elvis regularly dissagreed with the released version of the songs.
|
|
Unluckily, he hardly made his point towards the ones responsible, knowing there were times he was wrong and the song became a hit (In the ghetto, Suspicious minds, Burning love & others) This cd contains the versions how Elvis liked it!
These are rare acetates and purists will be happy since no effects have been used to enhance the sound. There are no further copies of acetates available in better sound, only a very few copies were made of each song and most are gone or badly damaged. The acetate lacquer wears out very fast, so every track is really unique.
Note: None of the used versions are included on the recent FTD release of "That's the way it is" or the forthcoming "Love letters from Elvis". Only parts of the acetates, which you can enjoy in full version on this cd are used in the documentary; Elvis "That's way it is". The CD contains 22 songs with a 20 pages full color booklet having extensive liner notes to guide you through the songs, background info about Elvis' 1970 and explains in detail what an acetate really is. Also why and how it's made. See full tracklist below
This is a limited release. Vol 2 will be released later this year. (News, Source;e-mail) |
Woman has kept Elvis cake in freezer for 30 years!: So Elvis really is everywhere! Hazel Phibbs, 90, shows the cake her daughter bought her 30 years ago. Phibbs kept the cake in the freezer since 1978. Elvis is in cold storage at a home just east of downtown Dayton.
Well, to be more specific, the image of Elvis is captured in icing on a frozen birthday cake that has been lovingly coveted away in a freezer there for 30 years. Hazel Phibbs, who celebrated her 90th birthday on June 12, vows to keep her Elvis cake until the day she dies. "I love that cake," she said on Thursday, July 10. "It is a treasure to me and I never want anyone to cut it. It's my Elvis cake."
"She has Elvis photos of the wall with spotlights focused on them," said Tracy Beck, Hazel's 35-year-old granddaughter. "She has a plastic Elvis guitar that was once filled with popcorn. She has an Elvis lamp and rare old Elvis 45 rpm records" She added, "But that cake has taken on hallowed status for my grandmother." Hazel even has a backup plan in the event her electric power is interrupted and her freezer stops working.
"I'll find a relative with a freezer and have them rescue the cake as soon as possible," she said. "To me Elvis was the greatest star, and this cake just means the world to me." Did EPE also license this? (News, Source;EIN/SanjaM)

Elvis The Mini Series (DVD Review): What it takes to effectively portray the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll should never be underestimated. Each fan has his or her own preconceptions and expectations about how Elvis should be portrayed on screen and this makes the acting challenge particularly problematic.
So when Elvis The Mini Series was in development, the producers had an unenviable task in selecting their Elvis, not to mention how to fit such a complex and rich story into 2 hours screen time!
How does Jonathan Rhys Meyers stack up as Elvis?
How strong is the storyline?
How worthwhile is this TV mini-series produced with the blessing of EPE?

Girl Happy brings back pleasant memories: David Bowling, in a review for Blog Critics Magazine, provides an interesting reflection on one of Elvis' lesser known films, its music and its impact.
Girl Happy remains, for me, the most memorable movie in the Elvis Presley catalogue. Why you ask? Sometime during my 15th year on this earth I screwed up the courage to actually ask a girl out on a date. The gods must have been in a good mood that day as she agreed. What better place to go than to the newest Elvis Presley movie playing at the Park Movie House in Woonsocket, R.I.
The movie was Girl Happy. While the girl, whom I would take to my prom several years later, and the Park are long gone; Girl Happy retains a wonderful place in my memory bank of life. |

Girl Happy was an excellent outing for Elvis. The movie actually made sense as Elvis was a singer who was sent to Florida to look after his boss’ daughter who was there for spring break. Shelley Fabares played the daughter and while the chemistry between her and Elvis may not have been of the Ann-Margret caliber, I do consider her to be number two on my list of Elvis’ romantic movie interests. Shelley could act, she could sing and she looked fabulous.
The soundtrack from the movie was issued March 1, 1965 and reached Number 8 on the national charts and earned Elvis another Gold Record. The music is strong and works well within the context of the film and on its own as a stand alone album.
“Girl Happy" is a fine up-tempo pop number that still makes a person smile 40-plus years later. Elvis is in fine vocal form as he belts out what could have been a successful single release. It is vocals that like this one by which Elvis should be remembered.
“Spring Fever,” in the movie, was a duet between Shelley Fabares and Elvis. The album release contained just an Elvis vocal. The duet was superior and did not surface as an official release until it was added as a CD bonus song decades later.
Four more songs conclude the first side of the original LP release. “Startin’ Tonight” “Wolf Call” and even “Fort Lauderdale Chamber Of Commerce” are acceptable pop. Elvis seems to be inspired and really trying as the vocals are crisp and the tracks well produced. “Do Not Disturb” is an excellent ballad in the Presley tradition. All in all this six song set remains one of the best of any contained on his movie soundtracks.
There were two singles released from the album and both probably deserved better than the re-action they received from the record buying public. “Do The Clam” only reached the top twenty for Elvis. The song is not as bad as the title implies. It was a bongo (yes bongo) driven up-tempo song that worked. It even came with a picture sleeve that is quite rare today. “Puppet On A String” may not have been as strong but was certainly better than many of the mid-sixties songs that graced Elvis’ soundtrack albums. Elvis slows the tempo down and just allows his smooth baritone voice to carry the song along.
Girl Happy remains one of the better Elvis Presley movies ranking just below Viva Las Vegas. The soundtrack is also excellent throughout and holds up well. So for an enjoyable evening, grab some popcorn and watch Girl Happy. Better yet, find a date and watch it together. (Celluloid Elvis)
British Government criticised over "Elvis was a gypsy" claim: The U.K government has been heavily criticised for wasting tax-payers' money on a magazine which claimed that ELVIS PRESLEY was a gypsy. Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month magazine also suggests that Presley's ancestors were Sinti - German gypsies who emigrated to America in the 18th century. The publication - for school pupils - also claims that film legends Charlie Chaplin and Rita Hayworth came from gypsy backgrounds. The magazine was given a $140,000 (GBP70,000) grant by the British government. But Schools Minister Lord Adonis has been criticised over the "politically correct" initiative.
Member of Parliament Philip Davies says, "This is a grotesque abuse of taxpayers' money. When families are struggling to pay their bills, for the Government to fund this magazine which speaks garbage is just another kick in the teeth." The Department of Children, Schools and Families said the magazine was designed to increase understanding of travellers' cultural heritage. A spokesman said: "It is not true that Andrew Adonis has approved or endorsed the distribution to schools of Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month magazine.
"The department provided GBP70,000 of funding to the gypsy, Roma and traveller community. The aim was to produce material and events across the country to celebrate the culture of the gypsy, Roma and traveller community." (News, Source: Contact Music)

Elvis Christmas Duets Album???: According to Elvis Unlimited rumor has it that an Elvis duets album may be in the works by BMG. The original idea is said to have come from Joe Guercio but another producer took the idea to BMG which crushed Joe Guercio. The concept is said to be Elvis singing primarily with female singers for a Christmas album.
The following news is reproduced from an article by Brian Quinn in the July/August issue of Essential Elvis magazine:
Sony BMG are committed to producing a ‘Duets’ Album and again I am very excited about this. This release, probably in 2009, should be a worldwide smash. It is anticipated that different countries will get different versions featuring their own superstars duetting in their native language with Elvis. We will need to start saving up to buy all the different releases.
In connection with such a project it is felt that a ‘switched on’ contemporary producer of the calibre say of Mark Ronson would be beneficial. Such a person would have access to all suitable artist databases whom he could contact at the touch of a button. I suspect many artists will be falling over themselves to get to duet with The King.
Sony BMG are also interested in producing a ‘Remix’ album but not of the ‘club type’ songs. It would appear they prefer to add new instrumentation to Elvis’ original vocals. The fifties tracks are favoured at this time. Chronologically, the ’Duets’ Album will be the main priority.

World's Best Kept Secret: Elvis live at the Sahara Tahoe: When in Sandi Pichon's book "Elvis on Tour '75" the Tahoe-project was mentioned for the very first time, the fans went wild because a book like that has never been done before and was highly anticipated.
But despite all the prophecies of doom and reactions like "Elvis in Lake Tahoe ? You can't do a book about it, there's nothing you can tell. And the plenty of pictures which are circulating do not justify to publish a book.
Of course, the Praytome Publishing team had done a lot of research before they announced the project. View video
But not only research was done, they tracked done many people and fans who witnessed the shows during the engagements from 1971-1976.
While the Making Of" for "Elvis on Tour ' 75" focused on the different steps of the production of a book, the "Making Of" for "World's Best Kept Secret" is done in a different way and sets a different spotlight on the production. (Source: Praytome Publishing/EP Gold) |

A new musical life for the Overton Shell: It's hosted world-famous big bands and legends from Elvis Presley to cult-rock favorites Big Star, and now, Overton Park's Shell will again be a home for live music. Newly refurbished and renamed the Levitt Shell at Overton Park, the venue's free inaugural five-week season kicks off Sept. 4 with a performance by local roots singer-songwriter Amy LaVere.
The music will continue each Thursday through Sunday (with two shows on Saturdays, including an early evening children's concert) through Oct.5. The Shell will launch its second session in May 2009, with another five-week, 25-concert season. Bringing live music back to the Shell has been a long, arduous process since the facility, which opened in 1936, fell into disrepair and disuse in the mid-'90s.
Although there were numerous attempts over the past decade to relaunchthe city-owned facility -- including the "Save Our Shell" campaign -- they all fell short."I don't think anybody was able to put together a clean enough package to get the city to sign on the dotted line for a lease," says Chip Pankey, executive director of Friends of the Levitt Shell and the man responsible for the operation of the new facility. Save Our Shell was an incredible organization, but they couldn't get the major funding.
"The Shell's fortunes changed in 2005 with the involvement of the Mortimer Levitt Foundation. The Los Angeles-based family charity has dedicated itself to reviving band shells throughout the United States. Its stated goal is to provide the "opportunity for individuals and families, regardless of their ethnicity, background, culture or economic and social situation, to enjoy a wide selection of great music in a beautiful, close-up, personal and memorable setting."
So far the Levitt Foundation has launched shells in Los Angeles, Westport, Conn., and Pasadena, Calif.Elizabeth Levitt Hirsch, the foundation's vice president, got a tip about Memphis as a potential site for expansion and came to the South to investigate."
Memphis, for me, was a cold call," says Hirsch. "But when I saw that Shell, my heart skipped a beat. It was perfect for what we do. We knew we had to be part of it. ... We saw the Shell as a beauty that had been ignored. It needed a lot of love, and we wanted to provide that love."Supported by the foundation, Friends of the Levitt Shell was formed. Under terms of a contract with the city of Memphis, the foundation provides financing to help renovate and program the Shell for five years. The city is to match renovation costs up to $500,000, while offering a 25-year lease with a 25-year option to the Friends of the Levitt Shell.Additional funding was secured through philanthropic groups including the Assisi Foundation, the Plough Foundation and the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis as well as several individual donations and the help of the Memphis College of Art. Roughly $1million will be spent on cosmetic repairs and equipment purchases as part of the Shell's re-launch.
In January, Chip Pankey -- a native Memphian with a background in arts and cultural affairs and most recently head of his own commercial photography studio -- was hired to head Friends of the Levitt Shell, handling day-to-day operations and booking.Pankey's vision for the Shell stresses the local component."We want to be a community venue as opposed to a tourist venue," says Pankey."We've had to navigate that issue of Memphis music. We're not here just to promote Stax or Elvis -- though that's a part of our legacy and history. But really we want to focus on contemporary music and the diversity of that music."Pankey has put together a music calendar that encompasses five general categories: R&B/soul/gospel, Americana (which includes folk, bluegrass and jazz), children's concerts, musica Latina and world rhythms."In a given 50-concert season, 25 of our acts will be local, another 25 will be national," says Pankey.
Among the confirmed performers are well-regarded acts like Chicago's folk troupe Sonos De Mexico, French gypsy combo Samarabalouf, Latin orchestra Grupo Fantasma, and Grammy-winning polka band Brave Combo. Additionally, Memphis notables such as LaVere, folk artist Sid Selvidge and soul legend William Bell are slated to appear. This diverse group of performers will be playing a facility, which, according to Pankey, can comfortably accommodate 2,500, "blanket to blanket."
With just 10 weeks out of the year committed, Pankey says, outside concert and event promoters will be able to fill the calendar and the organization's coffers with money from rentals."We're talking loosely with some people who would love to do a film festival, or do Shakespeare in the park, as well as weddings, private functions, all kinds of things," says Pankey.Pankey says the venue won't allow any performances that aren't "family friendly," or that might unsettle the Shell's residential neighbors.
"Being a good neighbor is the first and foremost priority, so we're not just going to rent it out to anybody," says Pankey. The Shell hopes to develop an individual donor program and enlist further sponsorships from local businesses and corporations. "We're a long-distance runner. We've got to look at five years out, 10 years out," says Pankey, "and how can we slowly, but surely, build the program and build the trust within the community." 'DISCOVERING ELVIS' IS NOW PLAYING AT VPP: The latest production at Victoria Playhouse Petrolia, Ontario, Canada is a winning combination of music and comedy, which will surely leave audiences wanting more. More Elvis, that is.
"Discovering Elvis," playing now until July 19, is the story of four Elvis impersonators at a karaoke contest, where things get wildly out of hand. Written by Marcia Kash, the comedy is set on a cold winter night in The Upper Club at Petrolia's Squire Tavern, where a national Elvis karaoke contest is being held. Robert More has directed another show-stopping production in Petrolia, where audiences were screaming for the outrageous characters and their on-stage antics.
While the first half -- set backstage before the show -- starts off slower, it sets the scene perfectly for what is to follow, giving a background story to each of the unique characters. Terry Barna (Marty), who starred in last year's VPP production of "Here on the Flight Path" is almost unrecognizable as Marty, a life-long Elvis impersonator who is hanging up his white, beaded suit for the last time. He shares the stage with Phi Bulani (Rick), Dylan Juckes (Jay), Daphne Moens (Cathy), all impersonators vying for the top prize.
Meanwhile, Cyndi Carleton is hilarious as Sue, the shy waitress who winds up having to run the contest, and Jenny Hall perfects her role as the crazy Elvis fan, Darlene. Action in the second act switches to the stage at the karaoke contest.vThis is when the music happens; and the actors don't disappoint, loading up one Elvis hit after another -- each with their own unique twist.
You don't have to be an Elvis fan to enjoy this show -- but you might find some Elvis look-alike's in the crowd! "Discovering Elvis" runs at Victoria Playhouse Petrolia until July 19. Ticket information is available online at www.victoriaplayhousepetrolia.com. or by calling the box office at 519- 882-1221 (News, Source: Tara Hagan, The Observer)

Elvis' Christmas Album - Special Edition is a nice Cd released of the old Lp, but what really makes this release interesting is the bonus section.
There has only been produced 500 copies, so no doubt it will be a rarity in a short time.
The vinyl edition of this release, witrh its stunning cover, is one of the most sought after non USA Elvis releases in the world.

"Elvis Is Alive Museum" re-opens with new owner: You might not have seen this one coming. Elvis Presley is alive and well and a local museum has proof. Lots of it.
The recently opened Elvis is Alive Museum on U.S. 49 North contains everything you would ever want to launch your own celebrity-death-conspiracy-theory. About 600 pages of FBI documents. DNA tests. Grainy Presley photos taken years after the alleged date of death.
Museum owner Andy Key , 39, of Laurel, can recite a litany of facts disproving the myth that Elvis is dead - from the misspelling of his middle name on his tomb to the DNA mismatch between his postmortem autopsy and a biopsy taken years earlier.
It get a little fuzzier, when Key explains why the beloved rock 'n' roll icon would orchestrate such a stunt. One theory is that Presley, as an undercover agent for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, was forced to fake his own death for the sake of his work in a sting operation against the Mafia. As for who or what is in Elvis's casket, lovingly reproduced in a dimly-lit room with gospel music playing in the background, well - there are conflicting stories.
"Some people think it's Colonel Parker's stepson, who died in California, but there was no record of his funeral. Another that it was a guy who was terminal, who had plastic surgery to look like Elvis," Key said. Most likely a wax replica was placed in the casket, he suggested. And the whereabouts of Elvis Presley over the last 30 years?
It's a theory: Key dangles the possibility that Presley is living in seclusion on one of the smaller islands that comprise Hawaii, but he believes that the sociable rock 'n' roller isn't living the hermetic life.
"I think he's traveling around, seeing people." It's a theory that explains at least one tabloid staple over the years. "People ask the question, then well if he's still out there, why don't people see him. Well, there are Elvis sightings all the time; it's just that when there's a sighting, they say he's a crackpot," he said.
Even if it doesn't convince you that reports of his demise were greatly exaggerated, the Elvis is Alive museum proves that the King of Rock 'n' Roll is alive in a slightly different sense. From busts to life-size cutouts to dozens of concert posters and record covers adorning the walls, the museum feeds anyone's craving to relive a time when Elvis Presley's music ruled the airwaves.
In addition to a casket room, the 1,600- to 1,700-square-foot museum also contains a memorabilia room, gift shop and restaurant called sivlE's Grill that sells hotdogs, nachos and even peanut butter and banana sandwiches made, according to the menu, from Elvis's own recipe. Key didn't begin the museum. It was started 15 years ago in Wright City, Mo., by Baptist minister Bill Beeny, but last year he put the museum on sale on eBay.
A $8,300 misstep: This is where Key stepped in or, more accurately, "misstepped." Seeing the highest bid was $8,200 and expecting it to sell at a much higher price, he decided as a lark to put in a bid for $8,300.
"I completely forgot about. I just did it to become the highest bidder, and then I got an e-mail from somebody in Tennessee congratulating me on getting the museum," he said.
Key promptly quit his job in sales at Cavalier Quality Homes in Hattiesburg and began making arrangements to house the museum. He leased a building on U.S. 49, and after months of renovations, opened it last week. It's been a lot of work, and Key hopes that it will soon dividends with increased attendance. In the short time it's been open, the number of visitors has increased from one or two a day to five to six, he said. "I have to get a bigger sign," he said with a laugh.
Janie King of Sumrall and her grandson, Casey Cochran, were recent visitors. She proclaims having seen Elvis in concert and is an encyclopedia of regional Elvis impersonators, but she stops short at the idea that he faked his death.
"No. It could have been. It was like after World War II when they thought Hitler was dead and they found all of those generals living in South America. ... Anything could have been possible, but I don't think so. I really don't think so."
If you go: The Elvis is Alive Museum is located at 7212 U.S. 49 North, three miles north of the U.S. 59 exit. Admission is free. Hours are 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday through Friday. Details: museum owner Andy Key (601) 433-2382. (Conspiracy, Source: HattiesburgAmerican.com)

Farewell to the Tropicana: The slow growth of the American industry and the overall economic decline of the US has now reached the famous Las Vegas strip. One of the hotels that recently filed for bankruptcy is the world-famous Tropicana, where Elvis record shots for his movie "Viva Las Vegas" with Ann-Margret.

Mini Elvis Film Reviews: (Source: Amber Smith)
Live A Little, Love A Little: In his 28th film, Elvis Presley plays frazzled photographer Greg Nolan, juggling two jobs and scrambling to keep his work life afloat while also contending with the kooky attentions of a beach beauty (Michele Carey). Four breezy songs, including the recent Elvis chart-buster, “A Little Less Conversation” and the “Edge of Reality” dream sequence add to the zippy fun. And, for the first time, Elvis takes on-screen chances with his public image doing more “adult” comedy. |
|
Kissin' Cousins: In his 15th film, the King takes on two roles in this backwoods romp, playing dark-haired Air Force Lt. Josh Morgan and Morgan’s adversary, blonde good ol’ boy Jodie Tatum. Lt. Josh’s assignment: try to convince his look-alike cousin Jodie to allow a missile site to be built on his land. A fistful of tunes “Barefoot Ballad”, “It’s a Long Lonely Highway,” “Tender Feeling,” the title song and 6 others), some whoop-it-up-dancing and 13 mountain cuties called Kittyhawks add to the down-home delights. |
|
Viva Las Vegas: Elvis Presley is Lucky Jackson, an aspiring auto racer with a dream of winning the Grand Prix. Sexy, spunky Ann-Margret is Rusty Martin, the swimming instructor who falls for him against her will, hating the idea of her man risking his life in a race car. Lucky struggles to raise the money to buy a new engine while Rusty tries to convince him to give up racing for her. George Sidney, a seasoned veteran of the lavish Hollywood musical, proves the perfect helmsman for this high-voltage Elvis vehicle. The King croons, shakes, and shimmies while Ann-Margret shows her mastery of 1960s-style gyrations in the glitzy, electric production numbers. The two charismatic stars are at their best during a hilarious first date, which includes dancing, motorcycling, dressing up at a wild West show, skiing, and going for a ride in a helicopter. How could they not hit it off? Their powerful magnetism centers this glittering, extravagant treasure chest of a film that ranks among Elvis's best. |
|
Speedway: He races. She chases. Yet love and laughter find a way when "World 600" stock car driver Elvis meets Internal Revenue Service collection agent Nancy Sinatra in Speedway. "There Ain't Nothing like a Song," pedal-to-the-metal Elvis and go-go-booted Nancy sing. For the first time since he and Ann-Margret proclaimed Viva Las Vegas, Presley pairs with a high-octane singing, dancing leading lady. Bill Bixby is the manager who mismanages Presley into a $145,000 jam with the IRS and laughs are further fueled by veteran TV funnymen Gale Gordon (The Lucy Show) and Carl Ballantine (McHale's Navy). The supersonic song list includes Let Yourself Go, Your Time Hasn't Come Yet, Baby and Your Groovy Self. Have a groovy time! |

Elvis Cape for auction on Ebay: A rare original Bill Belew/Gene Doucette designed Elvis cape is for sale on eBay with only 2 days to go. Although it is believed that Elvis may have worn this cape on stage in Lake Tahoe there are no known pictures of him wearing the cape.
The description says, "This cape is absolutely unique among the King's capes. Lavishly jeweled with amber stones and brass studs , lined in bold faux tiger skin, it is very heavy and surely one of the most elaborate capes ever worn by Elvis.
Elvis wore this cape during the January/February 1973 Las Vegas season and/or at the May 1973 Lake Tahoe season.
There is a blood stain at the hand level, where he held the open cape, probably caused by a fan pulling on his rings and cutting his finger. There are also sweat stains at the collar.
If you look closely at the picture on top (the back of the cape) you can see it looks like the spine of a tiger. The lining inside definitely confirmed that was the idea. Indeed you can see the designs on the cape were made to match the tiger lines in the lining.
The Cape has never been cleaned after Elvis wore it. Elvis wearing the "Tigerman" jumpsuit in Las Vegas in August 1973.
Angie Marchese, Curator for Graceland, introduced me to Bill Belew in Memphis. Bill Belew stated to us that he did make this cape for Elvis. Further, he remembered this particular suit and cape were special because he usually designed the outfits and submitted them to Elvis for his approval. This time, Elvis himself came up with the design and brought it to him. Elvis' karate name was "Tiger" and therefore, in this suit and cape he would be "Tigerman". The "Tigerman "suit as displayed in Graceland. As you can see on this photograph, they don't have the matching cape. They have used the "Nail jumpsuit" cape. Graceland is aware that I have this cape.
The bid so far is $20,000 with the reserve not yet met. 12 hours to go. Go here to look or bid. (News, Source;Ebay)

'Elvis '57: The Final Fifties Tours' Book Review: In 1957 Elvis performed in eighteen cities, including a short tour of Canada. 'Elvis ’57: the Final Fifties Tours' by Alan Hanson is a detailed look at these tours which started in Chicago and ended with the headline grabbing sensation of the LA Pan Pacific concerts and the final Hawaii trip in November. These would be Elvis' last live appearances before he left for his army stint and would help cement his place in Pop culture forever. This book is a sensational investigation into the phenomenon of Elvis in the fifties presented from a brand new perspective. The reviews from the time are exhilarating . .
"He clutches the mike and begins to sing, twitching all over. . . Up and down the stage he goes, dragging the mike like a captive, undulating, shouting feverishly.... Then his face sets, his lips curl back and seizing the mike by the scruff of the neck he prowls like a panther up and down the platform, snarling and driving his worshippers crazy."
EIN suggests that all discerning Elvis fans should invest in this thrill-ride. Go here for full review and photos.

The Battle Hymn of the Republic: One part of An American Trilogy is "Battle Hymn of the Republic". Its origin is interesting:
Julia Ward Howe, the wife of a Boston abolitionist, wrote this hymn during the Civil War after visiting the Union army encamped on the Potomac near Washington, D.C. The hymn first appeared in the Atlantic Monthly in 1862 and went on to become the rallying anthem of Union soldiers. It later inspired American soldiers in World War II as well as civil rights activists in the 1960s. "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" is the source of the title for John Steinbeck's book "Grapes of Wrath" and is considered to be the unofficial anthem of the Republican Party. - that Steve McQueen was very interested in making a film with Elvis!
- the controversial "rage reduction" scene in Change of Habit
- do outtakes still exist from Elvis' films?
- the recent destruction of many of Elvis' personal scripts with handwritten notations

"Elvis If We'd Only Known" (Book Review): There are several categories of books about Elvis Presley. Some authors try to discover Elvis’s elusive character by documenting and analysing his every word and move. Some explore Elvis’s effect on other people’s lives. Other authors write about how Elvis affected their own lives. Yet other books are deliberate frauds, the authors claiming to have known Elvis in order to gain fame by association and to sell books. Authors’ motives vary considerably.
In this context, Susan MacDougall explores this little known book by Sandra Richards. Ms Richards falls into the third category mentioned above....but does it have merit and deserve our attention? Read Susan's review to find out. (Book Review, Source: EIN) |

Love Me Tinder....Red Hot model of Elvis made from matches: It is a striking likeness. But beware. Just one stray spark and Elvis becomes a hunk-a-hunk of burning love.
Going up in flames is an occupational hazard when you are made of 50,000 matches. The image of Elvis Presley, along with others including Marilyn Monroe, Mao Tse Tung, Muhammad Ali and Buddha are the work of Scottish artist David Mach. It took him more than 500 hours and 1,000 boxes of coloured-tip matches imported from Japan to complete the 2ft Presley sculpture. Each match was glued on to a glass fibre mould.
Using the same technique, Mr Mach, 52, has created a series of other pieces including a gorilla, ram, stag and rhino at his London studio.
He also made four smaller Elvis heads, each using around 15,000 coloured matches.
The big Elvis piece has been sold for £18,000.
'I try to use common things like matchsticks because people know exactly what they are,' Mr Mach said.
'These items are in everyone's lives but they are almost invisible.' (News, Source: Mail Online)

From the Archives........On Tour with Elvis: ROAD WARRIOR - Rock and roll's first superstar made his first records without drums. Elvis Presley began touring the South with just guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black. Drummer D. J. Fontana tells how he joined the band in 1954 and what those early years were like.
Oh, no, no, no, there was no audition. Elvis, Scotty and Bill come to Shreveport, where I was the house drummer for the Louisiana Hayride. In those days everybody played the Hayride. The headliners were people like Jim Reeves and Webb Pierce, and most of those guys didn't even like drums. I'd just stand backstage until somebody asked me to play. So Scotty come over and said, "Hey, we need a drummer. You want to work with us?" I said, "That's why I'm here." |
|
To me touring with Elvis was just a job. But we worked hard. Heck, we'd play on the back of feed trucks, little bitty high-school gyms--we played 'em all. We worked all those little towns for a year and a half before Elvis even got known. He didn't really get known until he started doing those television shows nationwide. But he always got that same wild reaction. He was a good-looking kid, you know, and the music was different. We'd pack them little old gyms--I think the tickets were maybe 50 cents. We'd also do package shows with country acts, Webb or Faron Young. They were the main draw, the hot artists. Back then the country artists just basically stood up sang all their hit records. They didn't move. So they didn't know what to think of Elvis. There for a while they'd have him close the first half of the show. But see, when Elvis left the stage, there was nobody left to sing to. All the kids would follow him outside.
It got harder as he got bigger, because we didn't have no big sound system. I don't think the kids ever heard us play or him sing, either one. We only had one mike onstage, or sometimes an extra mike for Bill's bass. Scotty had that one little bitty old amp--the whole volume wouldn't go across the room on it. And when Elvis stopped playing rhythm to do his moves, boy, it was like the bottom fell out. So I don't think the kids ever heard us. All they wanted was just to see him out there. How long live the King? - The future of Elvis: The July / August edition of BusinessTN magazine features Elvis on the cover with inside an article by Donnie Snow on the possible future of EPE entitled "A Little More Action".
A Little More Action: When celebrated deejay Junkie XL remixed a lesser Elvis Presley hit into a 2002 smash, it returned the long-dead king of rock 'n' roll to the spotlight of mainstream pop music. "A Little Less Conversation" was the first relevant blockbuster splash featuring Presley since before his untimely, unseemly death in 1977.
And despite an attempt by bona fide deejay royalty Paul Oakenfold to copy Junkie XL's success with a laudable yet forgettable remix of "Rubberneckin'" the following year, Presley hasn't had a new original hit since. (At press time, a remix of the Elvis classic "Baby Let's Play House" by Italian DJ Spankox was released digitally by Sony BMG Music Entertainment.)
But give the guy a break — he's been dead more than 30 years.
This August marks the 31st anniversary of Presley's passing, and since the JXL remix, the biggest U.S. headlines involving the King included Presley losing his top spot in 2006 on Forbes' morbid richest dead celebrities list to iconic grunge rocker Kurt Cobain (though he regained it the following year) and a flurry of announcements in the financial pages, beginning with the sale of his estate by daughter and sole heir Lisa Marie Presley to billionaire Wall Street wunderkind Robert F X Sillerman in 2004.

Sillerman's acquisition took the cherished "family" business public, and since then he has released several statements relating to the expansion of the Elvis brand—be it in the form of casinos and cruises or hotels and touring shows—and plans for major financial stake in the economic development of the dilapidated Whitehaven neighborhood that surrounds Graceland. With the possible exception of some of the locals who live near Graceland, most believe the brand has been under-commercialized. Lisa Marie Presley said as much when she sold the stagnating company. Sillerman, renowned for building billion-dollar media companies, can mine capital for fuel, but ultimately, it's still the world's first rock star who will power the ship, which begs the question: How long can Elvis float in the famously fickle pool of pop culture?
Fame, Fortune & the Future: Since Elvis Presley Enterprises (EPE) went public, there has been little action, despite a lot of talk (or rather, a lot of announcements), and the corporate culture around Graceland has become much less interactive with the press. (Not unexpectedly, EPE declined to participate in this story.) According to analysts, the long wait should have been anticipated. "One thing I didn't fully appreciate is the time it takes to develop the sort of large-scale projects they have planned," says Mark Argento, senior research analyst at Craig-Hallum Capital Group.
"Developing anything that can drive big revenue and big profits will take a while," he continues, pointing out that the deal Sillerman's company, CKX, is hammering out with French Canadian circus troupe Cirque du Soleil has taken more than a year. "The planning that goes into it—the lead time is significant. They expect very little increase in revenue in 2008 and 2009, with it really kicking in in 2010 and 2011."
The original deal CKX made with Lisa Marie was announced in December 2004. CKX paid $114 million for an 85% interest in Elvis Presley Enterprises. Lisa Marie, who retained the remaining 15%, was paid $50 million in cash plus $26 million in CKX common and preferred stock. CKX also paid $25 million in EPE debt. Sillerman got a 90-year lease on Graceland, rights to Elvis' name, likeness, image and trademark, publishing rights to 650 songs and royalty rights to the few songs Elvis recorded after 1973, as well as to two dozen Presley movies.
Sillerman also paid $6.5 million to Elvis' ex-wife, Priscilla Presley. Fortune reported that CKX didn't have to pay Priscilla anything, but that doing so would make her more agreeable to appearing at grand openings and the like. It seems just that Priscilla would share in the sale, given that she was among the brain trust that turned the floundering, bankrupt estate into a trailblazing company—and Graceland into the most-visited private residence in the world. Barry Ward, former general counsel to the Elvis estate, was also in that management group, which included long-time family accountant Joseph Hanks; Jim Roscoe, trust officer at the National Bank of Commerce in Memphis; and Jack Soden, hired to head EPE. Ward helped appeal a court decision that denied Presley's estate rights to the rock star's name, likeness and image. This paved the way for the creation of the Elvis Law, the groundbreaking precedent that awarded celebrity estates control of intellectual property and trademarks after death.
"From where I sit, the Sillerman acquisition helped immensely, giving the estate the capital to ratchet up to a new level," Ward says, echoing a common refrain about the deal. When announced, Lisa Marie admitted that EPE could only grow so much and that it needed a bigger player to monetize future interest in Elvis.
"That's the amazing thing about the Elvis estate: just how many things they haven't done over the past 30 years," says longtime rock critic Stan Soocher, an entertainment attorney and associate professor of music and entertainment industry studies at the University of Colorado-Denver.
Elvis is one of the few examples in pop music of a star whose fame hasn't flagged, says Soocher, who is currently finishing his book, They Fought the Law: Rock Music Goes to Court, containing coverage of Elvis Presley's estate. (The book will be published in early 2009.)
"The CKX buyout is the most important financial development in the structure of the estate since it was founded," he says.
"Elvis Presley didn't do any international tours," he continues, "and because he's been so popular in England, it seems there is a pent-up demand to exploit." Soocher has a point: Presley's re-mastered No. 1 singles, which EPE released one at a time over the last couple years, tore up the British charts, which leads Soocher to think an international virtual, multimedia tour would likely reap large revenues.
But there's much more to the Elvis brand than music.
"Rockabilly may resurge, but it's never going to be mainstream rock again," Soocher says. "This whole other level [of enterprise] is so important to maintaining the Elvis brand."
He points to the proposed casino as one aspect of enterprise, as well as Elvis-themed destination venues around the world, à la Hard Rock Café.
"Domestically, there's a ton to do" says Argento, "but internationally, the opportunity to take the Elvis brand into a foreign market could dwarf the opportunities in the U.S. Put a casino in Macau or Dubai, put a replica of Graceland in Tokyo—the opportunities are huge. It would be epic for the Elvis brand."
The Mansion that Elvis Built: No kidding. Presley's estate has already earned far more than Presley did while he was alive, but Graceland in Tokyo? What would that do to local commercial and tax revenue streams? Most, including EPE and CKX, believe expanding the brand in such a way will increase interest and revenues in Memphis. According to Fortune, Sillerman's stake in the Presley estate exceeds its worth. Yet the company has announced a commitment to developing Graceland and its 120-acre campus. Plans include building one or more hotels and developing the surrounding neighborhood to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars—not that many checks have been written yet.
"I believe they are still gathering information on the project building specifications," says Harold B. Collins, the city councilman for Whitehaven. Collins says funds have been appropriated for improved cityscape to assist the development of a mile-plus stretch along the Brooks Road corridor, which will coincide with Memphis International Airport's ambitious "Aerotropolis" redevelopment plan.
"We're excited that they are getting ready to move on it," he says, adding that he hopes to see ground broken before the end of the year. "I think Mr. Sillerman knows how important this is to our city and is as eager to get it off the ground as we are." Well, maybe not as eager.
Last summer, news broke on a looming CKX buyout by 19X, a privately held company led by Sillerman and American Idol creator Simon Fuller (the "X" is a Sillerman signature). But in mid-May, the company lowered its buyout offer from $13.75 to $12 per CKX share. Sillerman said in a statement that the private company "remain[s] committed to completing the acquisition of CKX at a price that we believe reflects the continued outstanding performance of the company and which provides a substantial premium above the current price to the company's stockholders. [The price] also takes into account the seismic shift in the buyout world since the time we originally entered into this transaction."
The companies are reportedly working to close the deal by September.
"[The deal] should not have any effect on the economic development [in the area]," Argento says. "One of the reasons to take this private now is that it's a pretty attractive time, especially before the redevelopment gets underway. The bigger risk is the broader credit market—access to capital will probably be the bigger issue."
Most locals involved in the area's development are not giving too much thought to Graceland's goings-on; some view the Graceland makeover and build-out as only a piece of the overall vision.
"[Graceland's] development to come is part of the dynamic of building out what is currently the only fledgling Aerotropolis in the United States," says Arnold Perl, chairman of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority. "When Elvis Presley Enterprises announces and develops the initiative they're working on, it will provide a significant boost to America's Aerotropolis.
There is no official word from Sillerman or local EPE officials on when Sillerman's real estate spin-off, FXRE, might commence the grand reawakening of the King. But Memphis isn't the only city laying claim to Elvis, and it isn't the only city in which Sillerman is spending money on Presley-related properties. In addition to dealings on Elvis Presley Boulevard, FXRE also has plans in the works involving several acres on Las Vegas Boulevard for a hotel and casino, as well as entertainment, retail, commercial and residential development. It would all feature Presley, perhaps in conjunction with Muhammad Ali. (Sillerman also owns 80% of Muhammad Ali Enterprises.)
Elvis: the Next Generation: But despite all the effort, there remains the question: How Long?
Elvis is undoubtedly the most parodied person in history—Google search "Elvis Tribute Artist" if you don't believe it—and his place in the record books still looms over contemporary stars. In April, at age 38, Mariah Carey finally surpassed Presley for second most No. 1 singles on Billboard with 18 (the Beatles lead with 20), and Madonna, who turns 50 in August, finally passed Presley for the most top-10 hits with 37.
But can Presley reach a new generation that has grown up with Elvis the image, not Elvis the man?
"I think the story is timeless," Ward contends. "America cast's its heroes away very begrudgingly."
For Sillerman, this likely is just the buildup before the big bonanza deal, given his modus operandi of buying media properties at low prices, maximizing the brand, packaging them and then unloading at a higher price. He did it in 1989 with radio stations, which he sold to what is now Viacom for $389 million, and again in 1997 to Hicks Muse for more than $2 billion. Three years later, he sold a bundle of concert venues to Clear Channel for $3 billion.
One can only wonder if/when he will sell EPE—and what it will look like when he does.
Soocher doesn't believe it will happen any time soon.
"You have to kind of figure out where's the sweet spot for the sale," he says. "With Ali and the Elvis estate, you would think Sillerman would want to build up the brands—and they haven't hit the ground running.
"I don't think, as an investor, you would think they would be much more valuable together than apart."
Soocher argues that a more modernizing match would be some entity from the current list of stars that appeals to the younger fan base—and that, essentially, means hip-hop. Coincidentally, Rap mogul and entrepreneur Jay-Z just signed a 360 deal with an SFX spin-off company—the concert venue company Sillerman founded before selling to Clear Channel. The deal essentially turns Jay-Z into a property for commoditization, which is what Sillerman is currently doing with Elvis Presley.
Says Soocher: "I think the younger music fans are used to seeing music come at them from all possible ways, so they don't look at that as a violation. Fans are much more accepting today."
Nevertheless, what's unique about the Presley situation is that despite being dead, he is still a towering performance figure in pop music. The Presley estate may have outgrown the man, but it can never seemingly outgrow the performer. Unlike other industry personalities whose businesses can theoretically run without his or her explicit presence—an Oprah Winfrey or even Jay-Z come to mind—can you imagine a Presley industry without Elvis in the spotlight? WHEN ELVIS ALMOST DID A BOWIE: According to the Memphis Mafia's LAMAR FIKE, in his forthcoming memoir, AN UNCOMMON JOURNEY: ON ELVIS PRESLEY BOULEVARD (co-written with celebrity-bio man MARK BEGO), "In 1976, David's then-wife Angela, visited us all at the now-defunct International in Las Vegas, and she brought with her a song David had written especially for Elvis, 'The Prettiest Star'. She was a bit under the weather so she didn't get to stay for the show, but gave me the song to give to Elvis. We were terrifically excited to get something from one of the new emerging acts on the music scene. Elvis was always very much aware of the next thing, and, at that point it was Bowie." |

Fike has also written a film treatment to accompany the book entitled '57-60: One of the Boys.' "The screenplay is out to a several film companies in N. Y. and L. A. I expect we'll be able to announce a deal in 90 days." (News, Source: David Salidor)
The King's MWW Collection being launched: Rock-and-roll king Elvis is the source of inspiration for an upcoming collection of soft home décor pieces by Manual Woodworkers and Weavers (MWW).
MWW recently inked a licensing partnership with Elvis Presley Enterprises to create a line of tapestry wall hangings, furniture covers and bedding items. MWW said it is “thrilled to produce engaging and functional items of decorative memorabilia that pay tribute to the spirit and effervescence of Elvis Presley.”
The launch of the collection is slated for the Atlanta Gift Show this month. (News, Source: http://www.hometextilestoday.com/article/CA6574421.html)
