"Elvis Presley's Memphis" Opens This Week: Priscilla Presley will be on hand to kick off a four-day grand opening celebration for the brand new "Elvis Presley's Memphis" at Graceland on Thursday, March 2. The $45 million, 200,000-square-foot entertainment and museum complex is the second phase of Graceland's expansion plans. It will feature a new Elvis Presley career museum, the "Presley Motors" automobile museum, a 20,000-square-foot "Graceland Soundstage" performing space/meeting hall, a barbecue restaurant, a 1950s-inspired diner and retail stores. The facility will be five times the size of the current visitors center.
The facility will also feature a permanent exhibition on Sun Records' founder Sam Phillips.

As “Elvis Presley’s Memphis” opens, a new tour experience will also debut. The new “Ultimate VIP” tour experience (US$150) will take a small group of visitors on an unprecedented journey through Elvis Presley’s life story and the history of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Elvis as the Captain America of rock: Another review on the new Sun Records TV series....
CMT is selling Sun Records as the saga of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis as the revolutionary first generation of rock ‘n’ roll, but the show is really about Sam Phillips, founder of the record label that recorded them all — Sun Records — in 1950s Memphis. Phillips is played by Chad Michael Murray as a poor and stubborn innovator, determined to build a company around a new sound that would combine black rhythm and blues with white country music to forge both an art form and a money-maker.
Based loosely on the hit Broadway musical Million Dollar Quartet, Sun Records takes its very leisurely time getting to the exciting, rock ‘n’ roll part of this drama. As though the producers were mounting a musical version of The Avengers, we get the stories of all the principals. Elvis (Drake Milligan) — the eventual Captain America of rock ‘n’ roll, straight-edged and noble — is a poor, shy Mississippi farm boy whose mother, Gladys, sees his potential early on. |

| Jerry Lee (Christian Lees) is a cocky Louisiana piano player who pounds out tunes with the cautious encouragement of his highly religious cousin Jimmy (Jonah Lees). Johnny Cash (Kevin Fontaine) is an aimless Arkansas rebel who enlists in the Air Force and is stationed in Germany. Meanwhile, Sam Phillips is back at the ramshackle Memphis Recording Service, trying to make a go of it without much success. The TV show plays up a hazy historical fact — that Sam probably had an affair with his office assistant, Marion Keisker (Margaret Anne Florence). She is more firmly embedded in history as the person who first noticed Elvis’s star potential when he wandered into Sun Records to record a birthday song for his mom. I should say that this last detail has not yet been dramatized in Sun Records in the four episodes made available to critics — as I said, the pace of this show about lively music is really slow. It is also so light on context that I cannot imagine what viewers who are unfamiliar with 1950s rock will make of it. Will the audience for Sun Records realize, just to take one example, that Jerry Lee Lewis’s cousin is the nascent Jimmy Swaggart, soon to become one of the most prominent conservative televangelists ever? Mike & Molly’s Billy Gardell dominates a lengthy subplot about a blustery carnival barker who’ll become Col. Tom Parker, the eventual manager of Elvis. But here, he’s just a hustler who lucks into managing the career of Eddy Arnold (Trevor Donovan), a smooth-voiced crooner who deserves better than to be portrayed as a mere goody-goody pushed aside for the rock revolution. By the fourth episode, Parker isn’t anywhere near Elvis yet — he’s just signed up Hank Snow, played by the excellent singer Pokey LaFarge, and again, Sun Records gives no context for Snow, a great Canadian country star, billed as “the Singing Ranger.” He and Arnold are rendered as mere yokels who must give way to the rise of rock ‘n’ roll — and that just ain’t the way it happened, kids.
The show tries to be mindful of the racial aspects of this history. The fourth member of what would become the Million Dollar Quartet — Carl Perkins — doesn’t even appear in the episodes I’ve seen. Instead, we get the story of how Ike Turner (Kerry Holliday) — now a villain in history for his spousal abuse of Tina Turner, but at this point in his life a vital, imaginative musician — recorded the song “Rocket 88” in 1951 with his band the Kings of Rhythm. His glory was robbed when Chess Records released it under the name of the song’s vocalist, Ike’s saxophonist Jackie Brenston, and the band was renamed the Delta Cats. You’d never guess from this show that “Rocket 88” is frequently considered the first hit in the then-new genre dubbed rock ‘n’ roll.
Repetitious (okay, we get it: Sam Phillips had an unhappy marriage and made out with Marion as frequently as possible) and clumsy as it lurches from one disparate subplot to another, Sun Records is such a slow burn it’s kind of a fizzle. (Review, Source: Yahoo.com)
EIN Observation: In 1990, the 13 episode series, Elvis, starring Michael St. Gerard in the titular role was released. While critically acclaimed it failed to ignite viewer's interest. It was certainly was a quality production and a cogent record of Elvis' days before superstardom, but it too was a slow burn. Seems it is hard to get this era in the Elvis story right for a broad audience.

ETA steals Cancer Charity collection: An Elvis impersonator stole a cancer charity collection at his mother-in-law's funeral after performing a tribute song as The King, a court heard. Christopher Martin Burrows, 56, sang 'The Wonder Of You' during the service in memory of his then wife's mum Solange Scott. But a court heard just minutes later he pocketed £290 which had been collected by mourners for Macmillan Cancer Support on October 27, 2015.
Burrows, of Wigston, Leics., denied a charge of theft when he went on trial at Leicester Crown Court on Thursday. Jurors were told the Elvis tribute act is well known for his renditions of songs by the legendary singer at functions across the country. Prosecutor Jonathan Eley said the cash was stolen by Burrows at the service which was held at St Peter and St Paul Church

His then wife's mother, Solange Scott, sadly passed away in 2015 and her funeral was held in Hathern Church. The trial continues. Dodginess and Lies in the Elvis Book World: As EIN noted last week there was an interesting twist in the Elvis World when Joe Tunzi announced a new book on exactly the same subject as Erik Lorentzen's "One Night In Toronto" which was announced months ago.
In the publicity for his book 'Encore Performance Volume VI: '57 at 60 One Night with Elvis' Tunzi claimed "The book will feature photos of Elvis Presley, from the John Sebert collection taken from the original negative sources rather than lower quality scans you might find in other publications".
Unfortunately Paul Sweeney / Erik Lorentzen have supplied proof that this is just not true and that only they are using original negatives....

CMT's 'Sun Records' Doco-Drama Review: The Tampa Bay Times has supplied the first review of the new CMT doco-drama about the great Sam Phillips - and sadly the news isn't good.
... . Sam Phillips was an early pioneer for rock 'n' roll and, if you believe CMT's new scripted series Sun Records, the drugs and sex, too.
You know the names: Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. And perhaps you already know the story. The four musicians walk into Phillips' recording studio for an impromptu jam session on Dec. 4, 1956, and solidify a new sound of music that still resonates 60 years later. But CMT's eight-part drama based on the Broadway musical Million Dollar Quartet just doesn't live up to the legends' legacies.
Sun Records sure takes its time introducing each familiar face. It begins in Memphis, Tenn., in 1950, when Phillips (One Tree Hill's Chad Michael Murray) opens his recording studio and begins finding the voices of what would become the early sound of rock 'n' roll. We meet Presley and Lewis as lovesick high school boys who play different games to get the girl, and Cash as he's about to leave to serve overseas. But in the four episodes provided to critics, we still haven't really met Perkins.
While the show mostly focuses on Phillips (played with a ridiculously heavy Southern drawl), it's the obviously inexperienced newcomers playing the quartet who unfortunately carry the weight of the show. For example, Drake Milligan, who plays Presley, is more like the John Stamos' Elvis impression on 'Full House' but not as charming. |

The show has six years of backstory to get through, and it's severely lacking in musical numbers, which are some of the show's best scenes. It also stumbles on finding the right tone. It's a wholesome afterschool-special biopic mixed with a soapy night-time drama. And while we need the context of the segregated South, most of the time the overt racism is gratuitous.
However, the show does something absolutely right: adding the influential sounds of artists B.B. King, Ike Turner, Muddy Waters and Fats Domino.
But with so many stories to tell, Sun Records loses focus. Hopefully, it's worth all the sloppiness to see the foursome do what they do best: play the music.

"Until recently, Parkes was known for two things: its namesake, Sir Henry Parkes, and the Dish, used for tracking spacecraft. But a third was added in 1993 when the annual Elvis festival was added to its attractions. Like many country towns, Parkes was in decline in the 1990s. Local business needed a boost. So did the town. The solution? Obvious - Elvis! At first local response was muted, but as the festival gathered momentum and hotels, grog shops and restaurants, responding to big sales, took off their Akubras and slipped on their blue suede shoes, it became a fixture. It's also changed the culture of the town: cafe culture, Earl Grey and a renovated hotel called Gracelands. In some ways this is an unlikely story, by two academics who have followed the festival for years, about a town that got all shook up and set about re-inventing itself."

Melbourne Elvis fans Win 'The Wonder of You' concert double passes: Australian Elvis fans in Victoria have a chance to win tickets to the Melbourne 'Elvis - The Wonder of You' concert.
The local Leader News is offering ten double passes, all you have to do is fill in the entry form.
'Elvis - The Wonder of You' comes to Margaret Court Arena in June. Featuring images and video of Elvis Presley on state of the art screens, the event will feature the most recognisable voice of all time with a full symphony orchestra live on stage performing Elvis' most well-known hit songs.
The tour follows the success of 2015's If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra recording, and will star vision of Elvis Presley on specially designed screens with a live 40-piece symphony orchestra, led by musical director Chong Lim.
Elvis never performed live in Australia, so this may be as close as Australian audiences will get to seeing the King of Rock and Roll live.

Memphis Tourism Bureau opening in Australia and New Zealand: The Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau is opening an office in the Land Down Under in a bid to gin up more foreign travel to the Home of the Blues. The $100,000-a-year effort comes as the bureau tries to boost the Memphis brand in Australia and New Zealand which together rank as the No. 3 source of international visitors to Memphis.
Rounding out the top 5 are No. 1 Canada, No. 2 United Kingdom, No. 4 Germany and a somewhat surprising newcomer, Brazil, at No. 5. The office opening in Auckland came amid plans for "Elvis: The Wonder of You," touring show.
The bureau has operated offices in Japan, England and other European nations for years under partnerships with other agencies including Tennessee, Mississippi and New Orleans.
The bureau decided to add an Australia-New Zealand presence based on confidential data gleaned from Graceland ticket sales and bookings by tour operators and travel wholesalers.
"Kind of surprising to us a little bit is Brazil," Bearden said. "Brazil is starting to really show up in a lot of destinations in Memphis and is the fifth strongest ticket buyer at Graceland."

million tourists last year were from out of the country, but they believe it was substantial. The last estimate in 2010 was 16 percent.
Industry data suggest international tourists booked 450,000 nights in Memphis hotel rooms in 2016, Bearden said. That was 8.4 percent of total room nights. International visitors stay longer and spend more money than U.S. residents visiting the city. International visitors typically stay 14-17 nights in the U.S. and travel to multiple cities across a region.

Priscilla taking care of Elvis' grandchildren amid custody battle: Priscilla has confirmed she is taking care of her grandchildren as the family's messy custody battle rages on.
The 71-year-old dispelled media reports that her grandchildren, daughter Lisa Marie's twins 8-year-old Harper and Finley, had been taken into foster care.
Setting the record straight Priscilla said: "The girls have been with me and will be until all this is sorted out."
Lisa Marie and Michael Lockwood have been engaged in a messy custody battle since they decided to end their 10-year marriage last year.
Things took a sinister turn last week, when Lisa Marie made shocking allegations in divorce-related court papers that her ex-husband was under investigation after she found child abuse images on his computer. In the damning report, the 49-year-old said police had seized a total of 80 devices from Michael.
Michael has since slammed the "unproven" allegations and has said that Lisa is also facing investigation for an undisclosed matter.
He said: "As I experienced during our more than 10-year marriage and as I believe this court will learn, Lisa Marie has great difficulty being honest and she rarely, if ever, accepts personal responsibility for her own wrongdoing.
Claiming his former partner was trying to "damage" him, Michael continued: |

"It is particularly distasteful that she has placed more value on trying to damage my reputation than on the fact that her false statements may be brought to our daughters' attention."
In addition to their custody drama, Lisa and Michael are also involved in a bitter feud over finances. Michael is reportedly demanding money towards his legal costs and an additional £32,000 a month in spousal support.
However, Lisa Marie has argued that she is unable to meet the demands as she is facing financial struggles.
In court documents, the mum-of-four revealed she has been forced to "loan" money from friends and had to move in with her eldest daughter, actress Riley Keough.

'Wild In Wichita!' New import: Out soon from the E.P. Collector label is "Wild In Wichita!" (EPC 2017-10), Audience Recording from Wichita, Kansas, on December 27th, 1976.
This is a previously unreleased show, taken from a recently found first generation copy of an original audience recorded master cassette tape. Until now, the Wichita show was never available in an acceptable sound, the EPE label looked for a better tape and succeeded! Although still not great quality, it is a very listenable recording of this wonderful opening show!
To prevent possible speculations: years ago FTD reportedly planned a possible soundboard release of the Wichita '76 show. Unfortunately this info was based on a mislabeled tape and there are no indications that a soundboard of this show exists.
Just as all other December '76 tour shows, this concert is excellent! Elvis appeared on stage with the same joy and energy as in Pittsburgh on New Year's Eve. Highlights are "Fairytale", "And I Love You So", a full version of "Early Mornin' Rain", an unbeatable performance of "How Great Thou Art", and "Hurt". One unique performance stands out. It was the very first time that Elvis performed "Unchained Melody", accompanying himself on piano. This premier performance is tentative in parts but that's part of the magic. A great Presley moment!
This CD features a 16-page booklet, filled with a.o. a local newspaper concert review, and special memories by the American fan who taped the show. We are happy that she was willing to share her unique, never before published snapshots, too! All images are taken in Wichita, KS, December 27, 1976.

2017 Tupelo Elvis Festival: The 2017 Tupelo Elvis Festival theme has been released after the artwork was unveiled on Monday.
This year it will be held on June 1-4, 2017, to celebrate the life and music of Tupelo's native son, Elvis Presley.
The artwork was created by Tupelo resident Sue Scruggs. The artist created a Hawaiian-themed image that includes a variety of bright and tropical blues, greens and pinks accompanied with a center-focus on the guitar. The vintage inspired image reflects Elvis’ movie years and the 90-minute special Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite.
Scruggs, longtime Tupelo resident, trained in the impressionist style of art in Como, Italy. She has a degree in art from David Lipscomb College in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Tupelo Elvis Festival is entering its nineteenth year. The festival has been named a Top 20 Event by the Southeast Tourism society

Lisa Marie In Dire Financial Situation?: The E! website has recently posted about how Lisa Marie is "Struggling to Pay Back Millions of Dollars"
EIN's Nigel Patterson comments - The figures don’t seem to add up, how can a $100M+ financial position dwindle to almost bankrupt?
E! News writes..... Having a famous father may have its perks. For Lisa Marie Presley, however, it isn't enough to prevent a difficult financial situation.
As the singer-songwriter made headlines this week after opposing ex-husband Michael Lockwood's request for spousal support, court documents are revealing a glimpse into Lisa's finances or lack thereof.
Elvis Presley's daughter claims that she receives monthly income of approximately $100,000 a month from her inheritance.
According to the singer, her business manager did not pay taxes that caused her to have "considerable tax liability outstanding from this income over the last several years."
She owes the IRS "one and one-half million dollars, and over five million to the Government of the United Kingdom." In addition, Lisa admits that she owes $250,000 in state taxes and hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional debt.
As an employee of Graceland, Lisa receives a salary of approximately $4,300 per month that has allowed her to obtain health insurance for herself, Michael and their daughters.

But in an addition obstacle, Lisa claims in documents that Michael "spent over a million dollars of my separate property funds without my consent." When she confronted him, Lisa says that her ex-husband "acknowledged that he had spent that amount on my credit cards."
While some fans may know Lisa for her solo albums and hit singles including "Lights Out" and "Dirty Laundry," the 49-year-old says she currently derives no income as a singer/songwriter and never supported herself from the income made in that profession.
In an attempt to save money, Lisa says she has not taken vacations or traveled in the last year. She has not flown in any airplane in more than 18 months. Finally, she does not pay rent or a mortgage as she lives in the home of her adult daughter Riley Keough and her husband.
"I cannot recall the last time I spent money on clothes and shoes of any value," Lisa assured in court documents. The singer ultimately hopes the court will deny Michael's request for spousal support and attorney's fees.

Lisa Marie Ex-Husband in Child Abuse Claims: Police in Beverly Hills have confirmed they received child abuse allegations involving Lisa Marie Presley's family last summer.
The statement comes after explosive allegations of child abuse and neglect made by Lisa Marie Presley in a divorce filing against her ex-husband, Michael Lockwood.
In court papers filed earlier this month, Presley claimed that the couple’s twin daughters, age 8, were taken from their custody and that Lockwood is the subject of criminal investigations involving hundreds of inappropriate photos of children that authorities found on his electronic devices. Lisa Marie, 49, said in the court documents that the allegations left her “shocked and horrified and sick to my stomach.”
The court documents from Presley’s legal team, filed on February 7 as part of ongoing divorce proceedings, are part of her attempt to avoid paying spousal support to Lockwood.
In the filing, Presley claims, “... that [Lockwood]... request for spousal support must be denied by reason of his conduct alone.”
Originally married in 2006, Presley cited irreconcilable differences in divorce papers filed last June claiming Lockwood was a poor father and “took advantage” of her finances.
Note that it is still not verified that Lockwood is the subject of a police investigation and that the TBI said there were still investigating if a crime had taken place.
This was Lisa Marie's fourth marriage. In addition to Michael Jackson and Nicolas Cage, she was also married to Danny Keough – with whom she had two children, Riley and son Ben.

Classic Marty Lacker (R.I.P.): One of Marty Lacker's last conversations with EIN was about Elvis impersonators.
Only two months ago EIN received a note from a US Elvis impersonator - and their Attorney - suggesting a defamation case for lost earnings against EIN and Marty Lacker stating that Marty's "False statements have hurt and tainted my life & career in the music industry" and that he wanted to sue for compensation!
This was because Marty had openly stated that this person was a "nut-job" like most other other impersonators.
Marty said "I’m not fan in any shape or form of Elvis impersonators. Calling themselves Tribute Artists is a joke; they just want their 15 minutes of fame. If they had any talent they should put it to use being themselves.
The problem is most of them don’t have the talent. They will never be Elvis or anything close to it. If you want to hear Elvis music, play an Elvis record. If you want to see him perform, play a video or DVD of ELVIS!"

MARTY on Colonel Parker -
Let me be perfectly clear from the beginning, Parker was all about money lining his pockets and Elvis was his golden goose that made that happen.
He never took into consideration Elvis' personal well being as far as his mental and physical condition was concerned.
Parker was good for Elvis in the very beginning because with his carny con ways he got him known quickly and Elvis quickly made big money compared to where he came from.
But Parker never changed with the times and he continued to treat Elvis like a carnival side show in his publicity and tactics.
However, Parker took a ridiculous 25% of everything as a managers fee when the norm was either 10% or 15% at the most.

He instilled in Elvis from the start to let him handle the business side while making sure that Elvis really never learned much about it until he died.
Then in '67 when Elvis fell and had a slight concussion in L.A. Parker took advantage of him and demanded 50% and Elvis gave into him because his head was messed up.
In my opinion Parker never was concerned about Elvis' well being and his bullshit after Elvis died was to always say "that's the way Elvis wanted it" and "he only did what Elvis wanted him to do".
Elvis should have gotten rid of him around '62 and maybe he wouldn't have had to suffer through those shitty movies and got good scripts via another manager.
Elvis wasn't aware of the business side and he really didn't know there were good managers out there who would not only get him good deals in which he would have made more money but they also would have cared about his well being too.
I blame Parker's actions for a big part of Elvis relying on pills to escape his mental well being.

MARTY regarding the sub-standard movie songs. Weeks before every movie Elvis would receive a stack of demos from Parker and Freddy Bienstock of Hill & Range Music and most of them were pure shit.
We used to listen them up in his office and put them in three piles,one pile was the 'No', maybe's and Yes.
Without exception the 'No' pile would be huge, 'Maybe' had a few in it and the 'Yes' pile was usually three or four.
It really was disheartening to see what Parker was sending him but he did it because he had a piece of the publishing of every song.
If a songwriter came to us with a song that he wanted Elvis to record we had to tell them to see Parker. Parker would then demand a piece of the publishing before Elvis would record the song, some of them gave it to him but most of the hit songwriters told him to go to hell. I didn't blame them because to me that was not fair, it would be like a hit songwriter telling Elvis he wanted a piece of his record sales royalties if he wanted to record his song, that would never happen.
All that was a negative result of Elvis allowing Parker to handle everything. |

I am proud that I got that to change a bit during the American Studio sessions in '69 when one night when Elvis was taking a break because of having a throat problem we were up in his office listening to Parker's demos and Elvis was lamenting that he didn't have any good songs to cut, I then got up and did a long explanation why and I laid into Parker and Bienstock's doings and that it was hurting Elvis.
This was at a time I was not working for Elvis anymore because I had started a record company in Memphis and became educated about the real workings of the music industry and what was the normal and right way of doing things musically.
That talk I had resulted in Elvis recording 'Suspicious Minds' the next night even if Chips Moman owned the song and refused to give them a percentage of the publishing when he was brow beated by Parker's assistant Tom Diskin.
Diskin then complained to Elvis who told Diskin to let him, Chips and Felton Jarvis handle the session. That made me feel good and I gave Elvis the thumbs up when he did it. Diskin called Parker in California and Parker angrily told Diskin to leave there and come back to California and he said, "If Elvis wants to do this without us, Let him fall on his ass."
Parker was pissed and I was happy he was.
Some falling on his ass (lol), Four hit singles, His first Number One in 5 years plus two platinum albums that are still selling 46 years after the session!!.

Marty Lacker - RIP: It is with immense sadness that EIN has to report on the death of our great friend - and a true friend to Elvis - Marty Lacker.
Marty is well-known as one of the key members of the Memphis Mafia and also co-Best Man at Elvis' wedding.
He was known for both his honesty and being forthright with his opinions. He was the only member of the Memphis Mafia who still watched and commented on recent Elvis News. He had no issue with holding people to account (especially ones who would inflate their importance within Elvis' legacy) and would regularly write to EIN asking us to add his comments or to correct any inaccuracy.
I feel so saddened as Marty's passing so easily demonstrates the fragility of life. His death being caused by a simple home accident (he fell over while doing laundry) which caused him to be hospitalised with internal bruising and eventual kidney failure. Marty was such a character that he even apologised for being in hospital and not replying to all his friends emails!
Marty Lacker was born in Brooklyn, NY but grew up in the South Bronx until he moved to Memphis in 1952.
In 1953 he transferred to Humes High School where he became aware of Elvis because they both dressed alike which was unlike most of the kids back then. Carrying his NY influences Marty would also wear bright, loud colour clothes with collars up and had semi longer hair than the regular crew-cuts of the time.
It was later after his time in the army, early 1957 that Marty started going over to Graceland. |

While Elvis was in the army Marty would become Production Director for Memphis WHHM Radio and it was only in 1961 that Elvis persuaded him to join Elvis' core team full-time.
Unlike many others in the 'Memphis Mafia' Marty Lacker managed a separate career (working for radio stations as well as starting his own label Pepper Records in late 1967 before becoming VP and General Manager of Chips Moman's American Studios in 1969) as well as staying a best friend to Elvis.
Marty was responsible for many stars coming to work at American and was friends with names such as Petula Clark (Marty flew to New York to convince her to record in Memphis) , Dionne Warwick, Bill Medley, Dusty Springfield, Neil Diamond and many more. Marty was had a good friendship with the legendary Jackie Wilson, as did Sonny West.
In recent years Marty Lacker stated his disappointment over Priscilla / EPE's cheap commercialisation of Elvis' legacy and their lack of support or interest in cousin Billy Smith who stayed by Elvis' side to the very end.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal today commented..
"If not for Marty Lacker, Elvis might never have gone to American Studios in 1969 to record the landmark "From Elvis in Memphis" record. If not for Mr. Lacker, then, the world might never have had such Presley hits as "Suspicious Minds", "In the Ghetto," among many others.
Chips Moman noted, "Marty was working for me and he was still in close with Elvis. So Marty was talking to me about Elvis and talking to Elvis about me and slowly bringing us together. He's really the one that got that album to take place."
Mr. Lacker also worked in the music business both during his time with Elvis and after The King's 1977 death. In 1967, Lacker helped launch Pepper Records and went on to become American Studios' vice president and business manager. In the early '70s, Lacker also helped co-found the local Grammy chapter and also served as the chairman of the original Memphis and Shelby County Music Commission.
"A big thing that I wanted to accomplish was to organize the music industry in town. Memphis was not a very organized city; everybody did their own thing," Lacker told the newspaper in 2010. "At the end of the day, you can't underestimate what the music that came out of Memphis has brought to this city."
- Funeral arrangements were still being finalized late Monday.

Sara Ann Patterson - Tupelo Elvis fan- RIP: Elvis fans will easily remember Tupelo fan Sara Ann Patterson who is seen with Elvis in the famous photos at the Tupelo showgrounds. We are sad to report that Sara Ann Patterson Gunter died a few days ago on January 29, aged 77. Sara was born in Tupelo on April 8, l939 to pioneer Lee Countians, Sam and Lucille Garmon Patterson. She grew up in Verona, graduated from Tupelo High School in l957 and received her higher education at Mississippi University for Women and Delta State University.
Sara was an avid Elvis Presley fan. In Elvis' 1956 return to the Tupelo Fairgrounds, she got to not only meet Elvis but received a kiss on the cheek from "the King." She appeared in the definitive documentary of the singer's time in Tupelo, Elvis: "The Return to Tupelo" where she shared the excitement of her association with Elvis. She is seen giving Elvis a special hat, however Elvis then gave her back the hat before he went on stage - and she kept it all these years.
In 1959, she married Gary Gunter. Sara was the owner of Sara's Factory Outlet many years. A lifelong member of the Verona United Methodist Church, she loved local history and contributed greatly to the restoration of the Verona Cemetery, where many of her forebears are interred. Sara was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Colonists.

Elvis’ Humes High School may close: Elvis’ Humes High School is now an under-enrolled charter school and state officials will soon decide its fate. When Elvis Presley graduated from L.C. Humes High School in 1953 during the days of segregated schools, the stately red brick building was operated by the city district to serve white students in a growing area of north Memphis.
The school still operates today and is known as Humes Preparatory Academy Middle, a mostly black, state-run charter school serving a community with a shrinking population of school-age children. This week, leaders of Tennessee’s Achievement School District are expected to announce whether the historic school will remain open.
Last year the state-run school turnaround district invited other eligible charter networks to apply to step in. But only one, Memphis-based Frayser Community Schools, threw its hat in the ring. Among Frayser’s plans for Humes: a renewed focus on music.

“It’s inspiring to know that we will be walking in the footsteps of Elvis Presley if we are able to start this program,” said Derrick Lewis, fine arts chairman for MLK College Preparatory High School, Frayser’s only current school, also in Memphis.
The state-run district already plans to let at least one of its 31 Memphis schools close because of low enrollment.
But the outlook at Humes is somewhat brighter with the middle school operating at 69 percent of capacity.
Whatever the decision about Humes, the school building on North Manassas Avenue will remain. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its connection to Presley, whose performance in the school talent show whetted his appetite to become an entertainer.
A historical plaque has stood in the schoolyard since 2013 to trumpet the school’s history and famous alumnus. The Humes property would return to the possession of Shelby County Schools if the ASD decides to walk away.

Col Parker's Home saved for future Museum: The historic Madison home once owned by Elvis Presley’s manager is being taken apart piece by piece.
Brian Oxley and his crew are working on the Madison home of Colonel Tom Parker. When he learned they wanted to put a car wash up, he knew people would want to keep the history of the home. “I’ve told my team, we’re all archaeologists, ya know? This is fun, we’re looking for clues, we’re trying to match pictures with the knots on the doors, where Elvis may have stood, but I think the number one thing more than archaeologists, I’m an anthropologist, which means I’m interested in people,”
So crews are taking it apart and numbering every beam, floor board, and pine wall so it can be re-assembled somewhere else for a permanent Elvis Presley display. |

The famous singer would stay there when he was in Nashville.
The home has sat largely vacant since Steve North, who purchased the property and moved his law office there in the mid-1990s, retired. In 2015, it was included on the 2015 "Nashville Nine" list of the city's most-endangered historic places. Last month, news that developers wanted to open a car wash on the property made headlines nationwide.
This isn’t Oxley's first project. In recent years he purchased and restored Johnny Cash’s Bon Aqua property and the “Mama Cash House” the country star bought for his mother in Hendersonville. But now he’s switching his focus from the Man in Black to the King.
Oxley hopes to eventually reassemble the interior and include it as part of a permanent Presley display. He’s already begun delving into research about Parker’s life and work as well as the home’s famous visitors. Pointing to the wood paneling on the wall, he said, "These knots are like fingerprints. You see them in old pictures (of the house) and you can tell exactly where Elvis was standing."

Sonny & Judy West still need Our Help: Things are very sadly going worse for Sonny West and his wife Judy with both now diagnosed with cancer and needing our help.
Paige Petersen was a fan who happened to overdose on Hycodan one night at Elvis' Palm Springs house around 1973.
She describes how Sony West saved her life and now asks for your help to support Sonny & Judy West...
"As you know, Sonny was one of the original members of the "Memphis Mafia", but to me, he is so much more. This man saved my life. Literally.
If it wasn't for Sonny, I would be dead. I am now 64, but at 17 years old, after a night of partying with Elvis, I fell into a coma. I was unresponsive and Sonny found me, got an ambulance and rode with me to the hospital. He was with me every day, got my mother to me and after a week in a coma, I woke up. The first face I saw was Sonny's. I owe my life to this man. Please pray for Sonny and his beautiful wife, Judy. They both need our prayers and if you can please donate anything at all, I know they would be very grateful. These are good people with bad luck. I wish the Elvis Presley Estate would help out, too. That would be awesome.

West is currently undergoing treatment for cancer shortly after celebrating five years in remission. His wife of 46 years, Judy Jordan, is also undergoing treatment for cancer and will be admitted into surgery next week.
Because of their mounting medical bills, and debt of nearly $22,000, the couple said they are now facing foreclosure, scheduled later this month.
"I just feel very depressed," West said.

To pay off debt they accrued for the various treatments, the couple said they began selling Presley's memorabilia, including the jewelry he gifted West, and a briefcase.

Judge rules Elvis guitar belongs to National Museum: The debate has been going since July 2014 but now a federal judge ruled this morning that a guitar played by Elvis Presley rightfully belongs to the National Music Museum at the University of South Dakota and not a Memphis-based memorabilia collector.
The decision means that the museum will not have to turn over the guitar to collector Larry Moss, who sued both the museum and Robert Johnson, a broker who negotiated the deal that led to the museum acquiring the guitar.
Moss argued that he had a deal in 2008 with Johnson to purchase the Martin D-35 guitar, which the rock icon played on his final tour in 1977. The guitar was damaged during a show in St. Petersburg, Fla., and Presley gave it to a fan. He died six months later.
But the guitar, one of several instruments negotiated between Moss and Johnson, was never delivered to Johnson. Nor did money change hands for that guitar, although Moss did pay Johnson $70,000 for two other guitars.
Based on correspondence between the two, Schreier ruled that the D-35 was one part of two separate deals negotiated between 2007 and 2010 – one for the two guitars Moss did receive and the other which included the Martin D-35 that was never completed.
The museum hoped Elvis’ broad appeal would help attract visitors.
Knowing the ownership history of the objects entering Museum collections is becoming ever more vital, not only for the educational value of that information, but for legal, ethical, and moral reasons.
“As a non-profit organization,” he added, “of course, we were pained by the expense required to protect this important instrument in our collection, but we’re thrilled that our further investment will allow the Elvis guitar to remain in the public’s eye at the NMM for the learning and enjoyment of our future visitors.”

'Sahara Tahoe' New Import: AudiRec proudly presents 'Sahara Tahoe' - probably last “listenable” Lake Tahoe “Summer of 1971” audience recording. Recorded with non-professional equipment by a female fan in the audience - on July 31st, 1971 at the Dinner Show - it is the first time that this concert is available on a “real” cd.
Elvis stint at the “Sahara Tahoe” Hotel in the summer of 1971 isn't well documented. What seems to be pretty clear from our research is that Elvis had a really good time at this first engagement at the (compared to Las Vegas) smaller venue. Rex Martin´s weekly publication for the worldwide Elvis fan base delivered first hand information from fans who were at the shows at the “Sahara Tahoe”. So for instance fans were able to read astounding facts like this in Issue´s number 24 and 25: “Elvis sang Happy Birthday to a 12-year old girl and gave her a 4-LP set! He was giving away those gift sets from the stage now and then….”
It is also interesting to learn that these unusual songs have been heard by fans at at least one of the other shows: Treat Me Nice / Old Shep / Sweet Caroline / It´s Impossible / I Was The One / It´s Over / Hawaiian Wedding Song / My Babe / Help Me Make It Through The Night. Issue number 24 tells us “Elvis wore many white jumpsuits, plus a black and red outfit. Red jacket with black trim, black slacks, red shirt, black Onyx ring” and also “He split his pants once and was so embarrassed!”.

RIP Mary Tyler Moore: This morning we learnt that actress Mary Tyler Moore had died aged 80. Although best known for her roles as Laura Petrie in The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961 – 1966), and as Mary Richards in The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1971 – 1977), Mary Tyler Moore is also remembered by Elvis fans as Sister Michelle Gallagher in Elvis’ final scripted film, Change Of Habit (1969).
Born in Brooklyn, New York, and initially living in Flushing, Queens, Moore and her family moved to Los Angeles when she was eight. At age 17, she decided that she wanted to be a dancer. However, she ended up moving into acting, appearing in guest roles on such television shows as 77 Sunset Strip, Wanted: Dead Or Alive, Surfside Six, and Hawaiian Eye (N.B. Surfside Six featured Diane McBain, and the cast of Hawaiian Eye included Anthony Eisley, and Poncie Ponce, all of whom would appear in Elvis’ 1960s movies).
Moore’s big break came in 1961 when she was cast as Laurie Petrie, wife of Rob Petrie, Dick Van Dyke’s character in The Dick Van Dyke Show. The show ran until 1966, and earned Moore two Emmy Awards as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. |

Subsequently, she found greater success playing Mary Richards in The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970 – 1977) (which also featured Ed Asner who had appeared with Elvis in Kid Galahad, and Change of Habit). The show earned a then-record 29 Emmy Awards (including four for Moore herself, who also won a Golden Globe for the series), and has become a television classic. She continued to work in television on and off until 2013, with her last appearance being a guest spot on Hot In Cleveland.
Moore also made 15 movies, including Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967), and Ordinary People (1980), for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress (losing out to Sissy Spacek for Coal Miner’s Daughter). She also appeared in Elvis’ final scripted film, Change of Habit. The movie – made as part of the NBC deal that included the 1968 Elvis ‘comeback’ television special. – was filmed between March and May 1969, and released nationally on 10 November the same year, reaching #17 on the year-end list of top-grossing films (which was quite impressive given its late release date!).
In a December 1969 article for Coronet magazine, Moore is quoted as saying “I was an Elvis fan before I ever met him, but probably later than most girls were. I began to like the way he sang when he began to put more feeling into his songs. You know, I thought anybody who had been the centre of all that insanity for so long would have some of it rub off on him … |

Most of my preconceived notions were not borne out. For instance, I was very surprised at how awfully good he is as an actor.”
In her 1995 autobiography, After All, Moore noted that “Elvis confessed right from the start that he’d had a crush on me since The Dick Van Dyke Show. He was so shy about it he was literally kicking at the dirt below him as he talked. He had a tendency, even though I was younger, to call me ‘ma’am’ out of respect: ‘Yes ma’am. Be right there, ma’am.’”
In an interview with Larry King, Moore recalled her time shooting Change of Habit as “a wonderful experience”, however, co-star Barbara McNair had recalled her as being “kind of standoffish”, with Jane Elliot remembering that Moore “didn’t get involved. She didn’t socialise.” Additionally, the film’s Director, William Graham, noted that Moore “wondered what she was doing in an Elvis Presley movie”, and that “she was a little bit on the prissy side, but that was okay, because she was playing a nun”. Whether the reserve Moore displayed was due to her strong work ethic, or her specific diet which resulted in her eating separately from the other cast and crew, everyone involved in the movie seems to have been in agreement that she was “very cooperative, a real nice person” (Director assistant, Walt Gilmore), “a wonderful actor and a wonderful person” (Director, William Graham), and that she had an excellent work ethic (Co-star, Jane Elliot). |

Although there was apparently no affair between Elvis and Moore, interestingly, in 2009, when asked by Parade magazine, which of her co-stars was most her type, Moore responded, “I think maybe Elvis, because he went so against the grain.”
After years of dealing with various health issues (she had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, was a recovering alcoholic, had undergone brain surgery to remove a benign meningioma in 2011, and was apparently suffering from heart and kidney problems), Moore died from cardiopulmonary arrest because of pneumonia in Greenwich Hospital, Connecticut on 25 January 2017, after being placed on a respirator the previous week. She was 80 years old, and is survived by her third husband, Dr S Robert Levine, whom she married in 1983. Levine, and some close friends were with Moore at the time of her death.

'Elvis On Tour' boxset for 2017?: It would make sense to tie in the 2017 long-awaited 'Elvis On Tour' box-set with the already announced 'Elvis On Tour: 1972' FTD book. 2017 is also the 45th Anniversary of 'Elvis On Tour' and what a treat for Elvis collectors for the 40th Anniversary year.
Now the rumours look even more likely as Memphis audio-engineer Matt Ross-Spang (who did such a good job on the "Way Down in the Jungle Room" legacy release) recently announced to music magazine 'Tape Op' that "Now (Sony) have got me mixing some live shows, and rehearsals from Elvis' live shows."
What other shows could they be with rehearsals that need multitrack re-mixing?
Matt Ross-Spang also commented.. that since moving in to Sam Phillips' Memphis studio, "I've been mixing Elvis in here, which is funny. He got tired of recording in Nashville, so he demanded they record him at home. He'd done the record at American Sound Studio, obviously with From Elvis in Memphis. So then Felton Jarvis bought a bread truck, turned it into a mobile studio, and drove it down to Memphis. It promptly broke down in Jackson, Tennessee, so they towed it to Graceland, where it stayed until after Elvis died. We found one picture of the |

outside, but we've been trying to find pictures of the inside of the truck. They recorded a bunch of dates in Graceland's Jungle Room, so I mixed a lot of that.
They put out the original masters, as well as all my mixes of the unreleased music [Way Down in the Jungle Room - see EIN review here]. Now they've got me mixing some live shows, and rehearsals from the live shows.
- (Hearing Elvis' voice) It's amazing! The studio banter is incredible too, because you hear Elvis completely relaxed in his "element." He really controlled the sessions musically, as well. He really pushes the band to get the feeling he wants. When I was mixing, they brought the guys down, so James Burton [guitar], Ronnie Tutt [drums], and Norbert Putnam [bassist] were there.
- (Ronnie Tutt) He's like Animal (from the Muppets) on the drums; just endless energy, especially with that double bass drum! Mixing the Elvis tracks has really inspired me with the artists I have been working with lately. Those Elvis records had incredible arrangements, with horns, strings, and The Stamps Quartet that really make choruses huge and the songs feel so cinematic. I really love the impact that they have on his records, so I've been stealing that idea!

Elvis Week 2017 Tentative Schedule of Events: EPE is already making plans for Elvis Week 2017 which will mark the 40th anniversary since Elvis’ passing. Graceland is anticipating this to be the largest Elvis Week ever. Fans from around the world will make the ultimate pilgrimage to Graceland in August 2017 to be close to Elvis' spirit during this very special celebration of his life and legacy.

EPE being sued over civil rights violations: The City of Memphis and Elvis Presley Enterprises are being sued over civil rights violations. A complaint filed yesterday in federal court stems from an issue that took place at the Candlelit Vigil at Graceland's Elvis Week last August. Five people who are African American claim they were discriminated against and not allowed to participate in the vigil because of their race. They say the treatment violated deprived them of rights under the United States and Tennessee Constitutions, as well as violated a slew of other claims under federal and state law.
During Elvis Week a group associated with the Black Lives Matter movement protested nearby the candlelight vigil, and police in riot gear prevented the protesters from entering an area of a public street where The Elvis fans were gathering. The civil rights lawsuit accuses both Graceland and Memphis police of barring the protesters because of the color of their skin.

Three protesters were ultimately arrested in the Graceland incident. Those suing Graceland and the city of Memphis seek a jury trial and unspecified damages.
The lawsuit also claims some of the plaintiffs who said "black lives matter" while on the grounds were approached by officers and instructed to leave. One claim alleges Memphis Police physically carried someone out by the arms when she did not immediately move.
Memphis Police and EPE are accused of depriving the African American plaintiffs their constitutional rights to equal access, as well as a slew of other claims under federal and state law. The complaint does not say whether any of the five were part of a protest that happened the same evening nearby.
City spokespeople say they cannot comment on pending litigation.
In a statement, EPE said of the lawsuit, "For 34 years now, Graceland has welcomed over 20 million visitors. They have come to celebrate the life and legacy of Elvis Presley from nearly every country on Earth, and they have all been welcomed without incident. Graceland is proud of its worldwide reputation for inclusion and hospitality as it welcomes the next 20 million visitors."

'Can't Help Falling In Love' Latest UK BPI Certification: The UK single 'Can't Help Falling In Love' released in January 2005 has received UK BPI Silver Certification (Single) for 200,000 sales on 20 January 2017.
Why this single that charted lower than the re-releases of Jailhouse Rock and One Night - and which people surely aren't buying now - has suddenly been awarded this sales certification is a bit of a mystery.
Having said that, any new official awards for a star that passed away over 39 years ago is still something to celebrate.

'Elvis: Spirit Of Jackson, MS' - FTD In-depth Review: On May 5th 1975 Elvis performed a concert in aid of the McComb tornado
victims at the State Fair Coliseum, Jackson, Mississippi. Elvis raised
$108, 860 to help residents who were affected by the devastation. Since
the audio for this benefit show is damaged beyond repair, 'Spirit Of
Jackson, MS' includes two other shows from the State Fair Coliseum. Just
over a month after the charity show, Elvis performed in Jackson again
on June 8 1975 and this show is featured on Disc 2. Disc 1 is from September 5 1976 and
one of his very best performances from 1976, prior to his stunning late
December shows.
For once the set’s main show is the previously unreleased September 5, 1976 concert. Knowing how average/poor Elvis’ shows could be in 1976 this really is a positive statement from FTD that this is an important performance, and luckily recorded in superb quality sound...

2017 Special Anniversaries: Several websites are commenting on this years special anniversaries. The highlights of 1977, with cinematic first releases such as Star Wars and Saturday Night Fever, the TV miniseries Roots and the death of rock’s first and ultimate superstar Elvis Presley gives ’67 competition in the rose-coloured nostalgia category.

When the King of Rock and Roll finally succumbed to pressure of constant touring Aug. 16, 1977, it was the first indication that larger-than-life rock icons who had become symbols of eternal youth were fallible.
Previously most "rock casualties" before him had been victims of freak accidents (Buddy Holly, Otis Redding) or late ’60s rock excess (Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison) but if an icon as large as Elvis could die, then anyone could.
Elvis' impact was so great that decades later there are still fans convinced that he has to be alive. Poor Elvis.

January 14 - 'Aloha Via Satellite': It was on January 14 1973, forty-four years ago, that Elvis performed his classic record-breaking concert. Dressed in his stunning "American-Eagle" jumpsuit, tanned, slim and Adonis-like Elvis was truly at the peak of his later career.

Parkes Australia Elvis Festival: This morning in the small NSW country town of Parkes near 20 thousands fans turned out for parade celebrating The King of Rock 'n' Roll. Elvis Presley fans of all ages took over the streets of Parkes to celebrate their love for the king of rock 'n' roll.
The street parade is one of the feature events of the Parkes Elvis Festival, which this year celebrates 25 years.
And while temperatures soared into the 40Cs, over 100F, it did not keep dedicated fans from turning out to celebrate the legacy of the rock music pioneer.
At the 25th annual festival there are Elvis tribute artists from all walks of life trying to get noticed with the hope of becoming the next big thing.
There was also an increase in the number of younger fans at the festival, which is tipped to draw 25,000 visitors.

Organisers hope the support of young people will lead to another 25 successful years of the festival, that is estimated to boost the local economy by $11 million.
Festival director Cathy Treasure said the week-long event has developed an international profile and is drawing Elvis enthusiasts from abroad.
"I think it's a great reputation as a festival … word's just spreading throughout the world about it," Ms Treasure said.
The festival runs until Sunday and includes a range of events, including a competition to find the best Elvis tribute act.

2017 Elvis Birthday Celebration Memphis: Graceland celebrated Elvis’ birthday as construction continues on schedule for the new, state-of-the-art “Elvis Presley’s Memphis” entertainment complex across the street from the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s Memphis mansion. Graceland guests, fans from around the world, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland and Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell officially celebrated with a proclamation of “Elvis Presley Day” on the front lawn of Graceland and by cutting the largest birthday cake in Graceland history.
Also includes T.G Sheppard talking about Graceland.
Other birthday events included concerts and panel discussions, with special guests including “Follow That Dream” movie co-stars Robin and Gavin Koon and award-winning filmmaker Andrew Solt, who made a number of acclaimed films and television specials about Elvis Presley. For the first time ever, birthday celebration events were hosted at Graceland’s new The Guest House at Graceland. The birthday celebrations kick-off the 40th anniversary year of Elvis’ passing.

Graceland Auction Nets over $330,000: On Saturday the Auction at Graceland netted $330,531 in sales from the 160 pieces of Elvis Presley memorabilia up for auction.
Highlights included a Gold and Diamond Lion Head Ring Elvis owned and gave to Charlie Hodge, one of the Memphis Mafia. It was estimated to sell for $10,000 - $15,000 and went for $37,500. Elvis’ Colt “Police Positive Special” .32 Caliber Pistol which he gave to bodyguard Richard Grob sold for $10,625.00 on an estimate of $4,000 - $6,000.
Elvis Kid Galahad Boxing Glove made $11,875, this was also above the top estimate of $10,000.
There were also two other pieces that Elvis gave to Charlie Hodge, which included a sapphire and gold ring along with an “Indian Head” gold coin ring dated from 1911.
Other items that were especially popular at the Graceland auction were images of Elvis. Some of these included Terry Wood photographs which showed Elvis Presley’s 1956 concert held in Tupelo, Mississippi, Presley’s hometown, which earned $8,125.

There were also 35mm negatives that were originals of an Elvis Presley jam session which featured the guitarist Scotty Moore, who passed away last year. These were estimated to be worth $2,000, but sold for $6,250. (see two pics below). Trude Forsher also held an archive of photos that sold for $6,250, with the pre-auction estimate listed at $1,500.
There are numerous other items at the Auction at Graceland that held interest for bidders, especially personal belongings of Elvis which had been used often. These included things like a platinum album award for Aloha from Hawaii, which sold for $9,375, a blue suede jacket that Elvis Presley wore which fetched $4,750, a diamond cluster cocktail ring that was auctioned at $13,750, a card which showed that Presley was certified as a sixth-degree black belt in karate received $2,375, and a Union 76 credit card from the 1970s which sold at $3,375.

When you look at any truly talented singer today; from the Beatles to Lady Gaga; they are all touched in one way or another by Elvis Presley.

freely and not be stopped by any barrier. Born shortly after the Great Depression, in Tupelo, Mississippi; Elvis was destined for greatness.
By the age of 21, he had a gold record, one million dollars and a movie deal. He inspired people to fulfill the ‘American Dream’ all over the world and demonstrated that it was attainable.
Throughout his life, he gave to people sometimes with donations to various charities or with hope.
Hope for someone, that someday, they would be able to live without the fear of being judged because they are a different race or religion.
Hope to that one kid in every school who was always different and harassed or looked down on. One day they could rise above those who tormented them and be successful and have the life they had always wanted. And so, today on the seventy-ninth anniversary of his birth, let us not remember him for his death or common human qualities; but for his contribution to all generations: past, present and future.

'Tickle Me' Francine York died aged 80: It is with great sadness that I share that my dear friend Francine York passed away this morning - writes Celeste Yarnall. I have known Francine since we were both teenagers and began our modeling careers with Max Factor in Hollywood. We always had such fun together traveling to media shows such as Memphis / Graceland, or the Hollywood Shows here in Los Angeles.
I cannot believe that Francine York is no longer here with us here on this physical plain. We have heard she had a fever last night and went to the ER early this morning and passed away there. She was 80 years old. Devastating news for all of us who knew her or loved her work as an actress.
Let’s celebrate a life well lived and keep in her hearts forever! - Celeste.
Francine York had more than 150 television and film credits and once declared the 1973 cult film “The Doll Squad” her most popular film, but she played everything from an alien to a exotic belly dancer. On “Batman,” she played Lydia Limpet, the hench-woman of the Bookworm (Roddy McDowall). Her credits include guest roles on “Bewitched,” “General Hospital,” “I Dream of Jeannie” and “My Favorite Martian.” She also

Born Francine Yerich, she was raised in Aurora, Minn. and Cleveland, where she performed in school plays. She danced as a showgirl in San Francisco before moving to Los Angeles, where she played the Moulin Rouge nightclub. Her screen career was launched when Jerry Lewis cast her in “It’s Only Money,” and she went on to appear in five more Jerry Lewis films.
She appeared in sci fi and cult movies like “Curse of the Swamp People” and “The Centerfold Girls,” often costumed in latex or leather. She told USA Today in a recent interview, “The studios would often hire me because I was attractive, then realized I could act, too!”

Here's a taste of his thoughts on "A Big Hunk O Love".
The driving song was written by Aaron Schroeder and Sid Wyche. Wyche had been best known for composing the jazz standard "Alright, Okay, You Win".
Whereas Aaron Schroeder was a Rock n' Roll composer through and through, having written hits for many artists but enjoying his biggest success with Elvis Presley. Other tracks Schroeder would co-write included "It's Now or Never" and "Good Luck Charm".
The "Big Hunk O Love" session took place on June 10, 1958 in Nashville, before Elvis headed off to Germany for his National Service. Not only did it create some awesome tunes, it must have been a strange session for Elvis as it was his first ever without Scotty Moore and Bill Black by his side. This marked the first time the musicians hadn't worked with Elvis since his very first recordings for Sun four years earlier. ..

'A Vegas Fling With The King' CD Review: Elvis' 1973 February Las Vegas season has a reputation for being a rather lackluster come-down after the truly stunning success of the Aloha shows just two weeks beforehand.
There is no doubt that Elvis should have had a welcome relax and a break after performing such a record breaking world-wide event. Instead, Col Parker shoved him straight back into the old-routine of playing to the all-too-familiar casino-crowd. Elvis had a right to be uninspired.
However recent releases such as Straight Arrow's audience-recorded double-pack of Elvis' concerts from February 12th 1973 capture him in better than expected form...
In fact Elvis was on great form this night riding high from his recent ALOHA concerts. The Dinner Show is very worthy with more bass apparent than the late show and the TCB band is HOT!

‘Memphis Recording Service: The Complete Works 1953 – 1955’ OUT NOW: MRS has released their 2CD/100page book compilation titled ‘Memphis Recording Service: The Complete Works 1953 – 1955’ - for Only £29.99.
The 100-page book chronicles Elvis’ short recording career there, from its humble beginnings (his personal acetate recordings from July 1953 and January 1954) through to the final Sun sessions in 1955. The full and comprehensive text is complemented by rare photographs and unseen pieces of documentation. The 2CDs contain the complete archival studio recordings from 1953- 1955: Elvis’ personal acetates, the Sun masters, along with rare session outtakes. The tracks have been painstakingly remastered and restored.
There are many highlights on this new release. All of the newly remastered tracks now sound much clearer and crisper. For instance, ‘That’s All Right’ has been taken from the ‘Mother’ master of the original Sun 45rpm. Also, for the first time on CD, ‘I Forgot to Remember to Forget’ appears without the false bass RCA added to it in the 1980s when tampering with the master tapes. Indeed, all previous erroneous mastering faults and miscalculations have been rectified on this release, making it the best collection of these seminal recordings thus far.

Book Review - Elvis: Truth, Myth & Beyond An Intimate Conversation with Lamar Fike: Many of Elvis’ inner sanctum (family, friends and the Memphis Mafia) have released one or more books about their experience with Elvis. In 2011 it was anticipated that the larger than life, Lamar Fike, would finally publish his memoir. Publication plans were delayed as Lamar courted interest from Hollywood about a screen adaptation of his book. Then, very sadly, before the book was finished, Lamar passed away on 21 January 2011.
In 2016 it became known that before he died, Lamar had also spent several days with researchers L.E. McCullough and Harold F. Eggers, Jr. discussing his 23 years association and friendship with Elvis. 'The Hometown Shows' FTD In-depth Review: FTD's new release 'ELVIS: The Hometown Shows' is another double-CD this time focusing on Elvis' Memphis performance from 1974 / 75. It features two legendary shows from the Mid-South Coliseum, Memphis, the March 17, 1974 (Evening show) and June 10, 1975 performance.
The March 17, 1974 ES soundboard is a brand new unreleased show, while June 10 1975 is one of Elvis' best mid-seventies concerts which has been previously out on bootleg. Both are excellent shows and in GREAT sound.

UPDATED - 'Way Down In The Jungle Room' EIN Review: Released for August 2016 this SONY Legacy pack celebrates the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ last recording sessions which took place in Graceland’s Jungle Room.
The publicity noted the sessions “have been newly mixed by Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording” and “includes both outtakes and in-the-studio dialog, providing a ‘fly-on-the-wall experience’ of what the sessions were like".
Elvis' original 76/77 albums were fairly uninspired collections (bar a few fine singles) and on the original LPs it was almost impossible to glimpse any sign of creative input from Elvis through the syrupy overdubs. It wasn't until the release of FTD’s magnificent ‘The Jungle Room Sessions’ that many fans began to understand the raw emotion, close camaraderie and Elvis’ personal feelings that were revealed by these intimate Graceland sessions.
To produce that same kind of revelation for the 'General Public' would be a very tricky project but that is exactly what the new legacy team has done - and to great effect.

He started collecting and selling Elvis vinyl over 40 years ago and has one of the world's largest Elvis Presley record collections. 'ELVIS On Television The Complete Sound Recordings' Review: The 60th anniversary of Elvis’ first appearance on national television is celebrated with this 2CD/100-page set.
The new MRS box-set was publicised as containing the complete archival recordings of Elvis Presley’s television appearances from 1956-60. For the first time ever, these tracks been painstakingly remastered and restored.
The recordings contain all song tracks, comedy sketch routines and interviews including the extended Wink Martindale interview.
The 100-page book is a chronological photo journey following Elvis from the very first in 1956, to his appearance on The Frank Sinatra show in 1960. It contains liner notes accompanied by many rare and new unpublished photographs.
In the individual chapters Gordon Minto provides the main details and highlights of each TV performance. Matching the text, each chapter features around 15 pages of significant photographs, a surprising number of the in colour.

Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage!
The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
