"Reel Cowboys" Honor For Elvis: This year Elvis Presley is to be presented with a "Silver Spur" (The Oscars of Westerns) for his several western films as well as his military service.
The Reel Cowboys are a non-profit organization that has been active for more than 19 years. Each year they produce the famed “Silver Spur Awards”, of which the profits help support various charities, such as “National Veterans Memorial”. Silver Spur honorees are famous celebrities that have worked in westerns, making them Lifetime members of the Reel Cowboys. We are known in 188 countries, and have been labeled “The Oscars of Westerns.”
This year, we are giving a posthumous award to Elvis Presley for his work in several western films (Love Me Tender in 1956, Flaming Star in 1960, and Charro in 1969), as well as honoring him for his military service. Other honorees that will be attending are Ed Faulkner, Richard Herd, Ben Bates (stuntman), and many others. Several other guests that will be attending, are: Morgan Woodward, Bruce Boxleitner, Wyatt McCrea, Janet Arness, Edie Hand (Elvis’ Cousin), Bo Svenson, Louis Gossett Jr., Johnny Crawford, Martin Landau, just to name a few. Also attending is a long-time friend of his, Jerry Schilling, who will be receiving the awards that will be placed at Graceland. In addition, one of Elvis’ high school classmates, Jimmy Angel will be there. We have also invited Lisa Marie & Priscilla Presley.
This event will take place on Friday, September 16th, 2016 at the wonderful Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City, California.

New Elvis Festival in Nashville: The new Nashville Elvis Festival is promised to be a premier Elvis event unlike any other, celebrating the music and legacy of Elvis Presley. Fans from around the world will gather in Middle Tennessee March 30-April 2, 2017 for 4 days of celebrity appearances, live music events and on-stage interviews with Elvis' friends and band members - hosted by Tom Brown, a longtime host of select Elvis Week events.
Two special VIP events will feature live recreations of the "'68 Comeback Special" and an Elvis recording session inside one of Music City's top recording studios (featured on the hit series Nashville). And Nashville Elvis Festival will also be hosting an Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest preliminary round.
Special guests for Nashville Elvis Festival will include members of Elvis' inner circle, who will share their memories of the King of Rock and Roll. Among those scheduled to appear are Jerry Schilling, D.J. Fontana, Richard Sterban who toured with J.D. Nashville Elvis Festival will also feature performances by some of the top Elvis Tribute Artists in the world. Scheduled to appear so far are Bill Cherry, Jay Dupuis and Jeff Lewis.

Graceland to run Prince's "Paisley Park" Tours!: When Prince died last April aged 57, his fans sent sales of his music soaring - just as happened back in 1977 for Elvis. Six months later Prince fans will be able to remember him via tours though his $10 million Minnesota home "Paisley Park" where he lived and also recorded more than 30 albums. Tours of Paisley Park in Chanhassen, Minn., will start on October 3, and tour tickets go on sale soon.
According to a proposed business plan tickets will cost $38.50 and that tours will last just over an hour. If this sounds familiar to Elvis fans then it will be of no surprise as Graceland Holdings (the company responsible for the Graceland tours) will be running the Paisley Park tours.
Paisley Park certainly doesn't have that "Homely" visual appeal of Elvis' old mansion. Visitor estimates however are 1,500 to 2,000 fans who might tour Prince's home every day during peak season. This puts the figure close to Graceland's 600,000 per year. Of course 30 years after Graceland opened to the public and 39 years after

Elvis' death, the Memphis tourist attraction reached the amazing total of 20 million visitors.
It would be a surprise if Prince's legacy stays as popular for as long.
Despite the likely similarity to the Graceland concept apparently Prince didn't like comparisons as one of his employees told TIME magazine, "Prince doesn't want anybody "to feel like they've walked into Graceland" when visiting Paisley Park."

Paul Simon, Graceland and Elvis: In the mid-80s Paul Simon found himself in a personal and professional slump. A highly publicized reunion with ex-partner Art Garfunkel had been more contentious than desired and his marriage to actress Carrie Fisher had ended in divorce. Simon's fortunes however began to change in a big way on August 25, 1986, with the release of his seventh album "Graceland" which drew heavily on South African township music as well as zydeco. The album would revive Simon's career, selling 16 million copies, nabbing a Grammy for Album Of The Year, and inspiring other Western musicians to start investigating "world music".
While the album's title track has always been noted by Simon as one his top favourites - strangely it was not his original intention to evoke the late Elvis Presley. The repeated line "I'm going to Graceland" was purely a mere placeholder that he had planned to swap for something more appropriate eventually. But the idea of Graceland stayed with him until Simon eventually took an unscheduled visit to Presley's Memphis estate himself. swayed by the sincerity of those who had traveled to the musical landmark to pay their respects to a fallen legend. The song then became the story of a heartbroken divorced man and his young son making a pilgrimage to Graceland in search of redemption.
Though released as a single "Graceland" never made the Billboard Top 50 nevertheless the Graceland album stayed on the chart for nearly two years and sold over 6 million copies worldwide in one year.
Paul Simon said of Elvis, "The first time I heard Elvis' music, I was in a car and I heard the announcer say, "Here's a guy who, when he appears on stage in the South, the girls scream and rush the stage". Then he played 'That's all right, mama'. I thought his name was about the weirdest I'd ever heard. I thought for sure he was a Black guy. Later on I grew my hair like him, imitated his stage act - once I went all over New York looking for a lavender shirt like the one he wore on one of his albums. I felt wonderful when he sang 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', even though it was a touch on the dramatic side - but so was the song."

"Elvis" out on US BluRay: Just two years after Elvis died, Kurt Russell brought him back to life in the original biopic ELVIS about the King of Rock 'n' Roll. Broadcast on ABC in 1979, Elvis marked the first time director John Carpenter would work together in what would become a legendary pairing in film history (Escape From New York, The Thing, Big Trouble In Little China, The Thing and Escape From L.A.)
The movie was released on BluRay this month in the US. It was previously released in the UK in 2010 with the same extras.
Tracing Presley's life from his impoverished childhood to his meteoric rise to stardom to his triumphant conquering of Las Vegas, Elvis features Shelley Winters (Gladys Presley), Season Hubley (Priscilla Presley), Bing Russell (Kurt's real-life father as Vernon Presley), Pat Hingle (Colonel Tom Parker), Joe Mantegna ("Memphis Mafia" member Joe Esposito) and Ed Begley Jr. (drummer D.J. Fontana) in an all-star supporting cast for an effort that garnered numerous Emmy nominations including Outstanding Lead Actor for Russell.

In the featurette (also on the old DVD) Carpenter describes the biopic as "a personal film, because I love Elvis a lot. Elvis was a human being who 'became mythical'." Longtime Elvis friend Marty Lacker (credited as an "additional consultant") noted, "Kurt Russell, who's a good actor, portrayed Elvis as the saddest person in the world, and he wasn't. Our nickname for him was 'Crazy,' for his crazy sense of humor."
Respectful, unpretentious and characteristically elegant (for Carpenter), the modestly budgeted "Elvis" remains the definitive screen portrayal of Presley so far.

Ted Torres Wins "Images Of the King" 2016 Contest: There are two major world champion Elvis tribute competitions in Memphis during Elvis Week . One is the heavily EPE sponsored "Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist" while the other is the original world championship "Images Of The King". In 2016 there were six concerts, four rounds of competition plus their annual St. Jude's Fundraiser. Artists that performed in the festival included Shawn Klush, Cody Ray Slaughter, Ben Portsmouth, Dean Z, Jay Dupuis and David Lee.
From the tough competition the winner of "Images Of The King" Grand Champion 2016 was Ted Torres.
Torres will be touring Norway in November following his world championship win and will be in Berlin at the start of February for 'Stars in Concert' and 'Elvis Das Musical' with the Stamps quartet.
Ted Torres was featured as the soundtrack vocalist for the 2014 independent movie about Elvis called "Nobody".

DJ Fontana gets 'Beale Street Note': During Elvis Week, Elvis' drummer and Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer DJ Fontana was surprised by being awarded a "Beale Street Note" from the city of Memphis. This was presented to D.J. at the Official Graceland Insiders Conference. The "Beale Street Walk of Fame" is a volunteer organization that has been presenting Beale Street Notes for the past 25 years. The decision of who should be awarded a special note is done by the committee and this honor is from his musical peers and the Memphis Music Community.
DJ Fontana now joins all the other greats such as Elvis, B.B King, Johnny Cash, Dewey Phillips, Marty Lacker, Bill Black, The Memphis Boys and many many others.

Visiting The King: Sweeter Than Tupelo Honey: Professor James Akenson is now 73 but still teaching at Tennessee Technological University. He remembers seeing Elvis on TV back in 1956 but had never yet visited Tupelo. In 2016 he decided it was time to find out what Elvis' birthplace was all about and published a lovely article about how he discovered that "The King is still very much alive" and it was "Sweeter Than Tupelo Honey".

... Finally, we’ve done it. After all these years going to Vicksburg, Mississippi for more than 40 years to visit parents, relatives, and Civil War sites we finally did it. We finally took the time to go to Tupelo, Mississippi to see The King. Of course, The King is none other than Elvis Aaron Presley. Just think, Elvis ‘Left The Building,’ ‘Crossed Over River Jordan,’ 16 August 1977 some thirty nine years ago. But….The King is still very much alive! We have the picts and video to prove it.
... We didn’t want to ‘mess up’ and fail to see The King since we’re not getting any younger. We missed out in 1977 through no fault of our own. |

Sadly, Tennessee Technological University had signed a contact to have Elvis perform on campus in Fall, 1977. We ‘woulda-been-there”! Elvis’s death saw an unbelievable outpouring of grief on the local, state, national, and international level. There were songs such as Ronnie McDowell’s The King Is Gone.
... I still remember seeing Elvis on the Tommy Dorsey and the Ed Sullivan television shows. Black and white, of course! What a sensation! I really was too young to imagine the significance of what I saw on those remarkable programs. Little did I imagine that I would be marvelling at Elvis some sixty years later.
.... Yes….the years have deepened my appreciation, love, and enjoyment of Elvis far more than I could have ever imagined back in 1956. Elvis’s national and international reach continues to thrive. After all, young Rockin Raffi Antonyan from France loves Elvis. |

.. Going to Tupelo on a pilgrimage means that over the years I’ve done some reading, viewing, and talking involved with Elvis.
.... The outskirts of Tupelo didn’t make as many Elvis promises as you might have thought. Yes, there was a modest, formal city limits sign, but there wasn’t any ‘Grand Entrance,” grand announcement, of overwhelming power as we drove past the ‘Tupelo City Limit Signs”—sounds like a famous Country Music hit by one J.R. Cash. We felt the Elvis fever though, forgot about checking into our hotel, and went straight to the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Park. Good move on our part! After purchasing our tickets we met Guy Harris, a lifelong friend of Elvis, who told us some fascinating things. Lucky us, Guy Harris was ‘fixin’—as they say in the country- to leave as he had completed his volunteer hours, but he took time out to pose for pictures and do a video interview.
.... We came. We saw. Elvis conquered us in style. Elvis may have left the building but he lives even more deeply in our hearts. Elvis is indeed “The King.”

Glen Spreen, Elvis arranger, has Died: Following a short illness Glen Spreen has passed away- reports FTD author Paul Richardson. Beginning with the American Sound sessions in 1969, Glen Spreen worked as an arranger for Elvis until 1973 - also playing on some sessions. Glen Spreen also worked with Elvis at Nashville's RCA Studio B and has plenty of stories to tell about working with Elvis and arranging the material. Glen Spreen also co-composed two songs that Elvis recorded 'Seeing Is Believing' and 'Holly Leaves and Christmas Trees' with Red West. Paul Richardson had the pleasure of interviewing Glen back in autumn 2015 and his insightful interview was published in ETM&HM magazine #110 and Part 2 in #111.
"He was a true gentleman and a supremely talented arranger/musician. RIP, Glen Spreen."

'Nashville City Limits' Vinyl: Rockwell label have announced their brand new ruby-red vinyl release 'Nashville City Limits'.
The album celebrates Elvis' marvelous music recorded at RCA's Studio B as npted on the cover. As the publicity notes...
Few rooms in the music world have seen as much history as RCA’s Studio B in Nashville. Steve Sholes, RCA’s head of Country recording since the late 1940s, had signed Elvis Presley to the label in November 1955. Elvis’ success helped Sholes and guitarist-producer Chet Atkins to convince their bosses that RCA needed its own studio in Nashville.
Studio B opened in November 1957. The so-called Nashville Sound resulted in many crossover hits and helped establish Nashville as one of the nation’s premier recording cities.
Sadly none of the first three tracks were recorded at Studio B - how stupid is that! And the track is "The Girl Next Door Went A‘Walking" - Rockwell need to do their homework better.

Here we go with probably the last known recording of a March 75 Elvis Vegas-Show in pretty good, listenable sound. Reports we have included “Hilton´s Elvis stronger than ever” and pointed out some new titles in Elvis´ setlist. Even Glen D. Hardin´s Aunt Ann Cummings attended the shows around March 27 and commented positively “Elvis his old self again”. Well, since you are soon able to own the complete performance on CD just judge yourself! Fans of our series know what to expect, not only from listening but also from reading in the usual high quality 16 page booklet with first-hand information from what was going on at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas in March of 1975.

UPDATED - 'Way Down In The Jungle Room' EIN Review: Released for August 2016 this SONY Legacy pack celebrates the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ last recording sessions which took place in Graceland’s Jungle Room.
The publicity noted the sessions “have been newly mixed by Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording” and “includes both outtakes and in-the-studio dialog, providing a ‘fly-on-the-wall experience’ of what the sessions were like".
Elvis' original 76/77 albums were fairly uninspired collections (bar a few fine singles) and on the original LPs it was almost impossible to glimpse any sign of creative input from Elvis through the syrupy overdubs. It wasn't until the release of FTD’s magnificent ‘The Jungle Room Sessions’ that many fans began to understand the raw emotion, close camaraderie and Elvis’ personal feelings that were revealed by these intimate Graceland sessions.
To produce that same kind of revelation for the 'General Public' would be a very tricky project but that is exactly what the new legacy team has done - and to great effect.

James Burton EIN Interview - Happy Birthday: Coincidentally with James Burton talking about The Jungle Room sessions (see above) - we must note that yesterday was James Burton's 77 birthday.
James Burton started playing guitar as a youngster and by the age of thirteen he was playing semi-professionally. It would be a year later that he was hired to work on the Louisiana Hayride show which broadcast from Shreveport. A few years later he move to Los Angeles to join Ricky Nelson's band before becoming Elvis' chickin'-pickin' "favourite guitarist" in 1969 and performed at every Elvis concert until his fateful demise.
James Burton is still going strong - and back in 2003 EIN called him up and wished him Happy Birthday!

Linda Thompson - More on her new book: More publicity from Linda Thompson about her new book. She revealed to the Commercial Appeal...
... Linda Thompson and Elvis were watching TV at Graceland when they saw Bruce Jenner compete for the decathlon title at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.
"We were in bed cheering him on," Thompson said. "Sure enough, he crosses the finish line. He's the picture of health and All-American good looks. Elvis looks at me: 'I'm not gay, but that's one good-looking guy right there.' I said, 'Yeah, he sure is. Matter of fact, I'm going to marry him one day.' Elvis said, 'Over my dead body!'
"It was a joke at the time. I think he tackled me in the bed or something after that."
A year later, Elvis died. Thompson met Jenner two years later. They dated and were married.
A former Memphian, Thompson recounts her years with Elvis and her marriage to Jenner, now Caitlyn Jenner, in her new book, "A Little Thing Called Life: On Loving Elvis Presley, Bruce Jenner, and Songs in Between."
Thompson met Elvis at the old Memphian theater, which the King rented for a movie showing for his cohorts. "He burst through the side door dressed as Dracula — flared pants, black cape with red lining and sunglasses on," she said. "It was July 6, 1972, and it was sweltering hot in Memphis. So humid and hot. I was kind of taken aback by how he was dressed." Elvis shined a flashlight in the faces of people in the theater. When the light hit Thompson, he said, "Oh, hello, honey." |

"And kind of sauntered over in this Elvis-esque manner," said Thompson, who then was introduced to the King with her new "Miss Tennessee Universe" title. "I had no designs on him. I was very cordial as Miss Tennessee, (with the) beauty queen smile fixed on my face."
Elvis changed seats so he could sit next to her. "I was a little pert: 'To what do we owe this honor? We're kind of dressed as Dracula tonight. Well, why are you dressed like that?'"
Elvis said, "Honey, I just stepped from an air-conditioned car to an air-conditioned building."
They hit it off. They both had the "same slightly acerbic" sense of humor, Thompson said. "Not mean-spirited. We looked for the inane in every situation. He was one of the funniest people I met in my life. I think more than anything he just loved to laugh. He found humor even in the darkest of situations."
Elvis and Thompson spent 4½ years together. "It would be hard to have met him and spent any time with him and not to have liked him or loved him. He was that kind of charismatic, sincere, authentic, warm and generous spirit. A really unique human being."
Thompson and Elvis broke up around Christmas 1976. "I did not break up with him because I didn't love him anymore. I'll probably love him till the day I die. In fact, I'm sure I will. There's always a place in my heart for him. But I wanted more for my life. I wanted to be a mother. Live a more normal life. I knew Elvis was not monogamous. We could get married, but he'd have other women. His prescription drug problem had gotten worse when I was with him. It would ebb and flow, but it would never go away."

In 1979, Thompson presented an award to Jenner at a charity event. A regular on TV's "Hee Haw," she was introduced as a "Hee Haw Honey" and a former Miss Tennessee Universe. "I was just a little ingénue. A newbie out there. He was separated from his wife. And we just gradually started dating. We both really liked each other a lot." -
They dated for 1½ years and were married in 1981.
Thompson never suspected Jenner was transgender. "Not a clue in the world. Just like the rest of the world. I thought he was the most virile, manly man I had ever met. This was a guy!"
Her sons now are in their 30s, Thompson said. "Bruce was not a great father," she said. "Not a participatory parent. He was out of their lives for many years, but they have learned to forgive him, which, I think, is another great lesson in this. I hope people perceive this book in the same spirit I was writing it — love, acceptance, tolerance, compassion. The kids have embraced all those noble qualities and incorporated them into who they are. And made me so proud the way they've embraced Caitlyn. They're not ashamed. That's part of life. That's who she is.
"It's the same quality I found in Elvis. You have to be able to find the humor in almost every situation. And the irony. And be abe to embrace life and let it flow through you."
Thompson has moved on. "In fact, another title for the book could have been, 'Elvis and Bruce Jenner have left the Building.'" -

Graceland Candlelit Vigil 2016: An estimated 8,000 fans
gathered this year at the Graceland gates to remember the king. The
numbers of fans who stayed to walk through the gates was not helped by
the atrocious weather with rain pouring down throughout most of the
evening. Presented by Elvis Country Fan Club this year's theme was 'The
Impossible Dream'.
Graceland public relations director Kevin Kern described 2016 as “an average Elvis Week" especially in comparison to next year’s Elvis Week which will mark the 40th anniversary of Presley’s death as well as the opening of a new $45 milllion Elvis entertainment complex, which will be be “massive.”
As a fan noted, "To actually walk up the driveway and then through the Meditation Garden surrounded by other fans all in quiet remembrance is unlike anything else. The love and passion for Elvis and all he did is contagious and can truly be felt at the Candlelight Vigil."

... "So there we were, about a block south of Graceland. The call had come down for the riot team to move into position, the protesters were getting out of hand. So we dressed in as the rain began to fall and got into position. The line looked like some kind of modern day Roman legion with armor of plastic and Kevlar instead of leather and bronze. Hickory sticks and pistols took the place of sword and spear.

We stood there waiting for the order to move up. Ready to go and feeling that anticipation before the action, time seemed to stand still for a moment when lightning cracked across the sky above us. Imagine, just at the second when things are going to get hairy four things happen at once.
Lightning flashes. From behind us Elvis starts singing "Are You Lonesome Tonight". The rain comes down by the bucket and everyone is drenched instantly. -
The crowd disperses.
So I ask you, did Elvis stop the violence that was about to break loose in front of his home? This was a scene from a movie and very cool to be a part of.

Parkes-set 'Elvis Town' wins Euroscript Prize: The annual Euroscript Screenwriting Competition for emerging screenwriters has awarded its best unproduced screenplay prize to Brisbane screenwriter Paul Mahoney for his script Elvis Town.
Euroscript was launched in 1994 under the auspices of the European Union’s Media II programme.
The competition, while based in London, is not exclusively European and is open to writers globally, the requirement being that they be feature length screenplays intended for cinema.
The purpose of the competition is to discover new talent and to facilitate the development process of their best ideas.
Mahoney, whose background is in business, has written a number of screenplays in addition to Elvis Town, which is set in Parkes, Australia and centers on the town's annual Elvis Festival.
The romantic comedy follows a network news journalist and his TV crew who are sent to Parkes to cover the events and personalities of the festival.
Mahoney will receive a year’s worth of script consultancy including three full reports on drafts of his script.

'Tickle Me' Blu-Ray Out Now in Germany: Tickle Me, Elvis' 1965 Allied Artists Pictures featuring him as a a champion rodeo bull-rider and bronco-buster singer has been released on Blu-Ray but only in Germany so far as "Cowboy Melodie".
At the time Tickle Me saved Allied Artists Pictures from bankruptcy thanks in part to using recycled old soundtrack material including "(Such an) Easy Question", "Long, Lonely Highway" and "I Feel That I've Known You Forever". Julie Adams and Jocelyn Lane co-stared.
Tickle Me was released for the first time on DVD in 2007.

Watch Video of the 2016 Candlelight Vigil - REPLAY: Thousands of Elvis fans gather around the gates of Graceland for the annual Candlelight Vigil and to celebrate the life and legacy of the King of Rock 'n' Roll.
The ceremony for the 38th anniversary is organized as always by the Elvis Country Fan Club.
After the opening ceremony at the gates of Graceland, fans will walk up the driveway to Meditation Garden and back down carrying a candle in quiet remembrance. Gates remain open until all who wish to participate in the procession have done so, which typically takes until the early morning hours of August 16, the anniversary date of Elvis' passing.

'Way Down In The Jungle Room' EIN Review: Released for August 2016 this SONY Legacy pack celebrates the 40th
anniversary of Elvis’ last recording sessions which took place in
Graceland’s Jungle Room.
The publicity noted the sessions “have been newly mixed by Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording” and “includes both outtakes and in-the-studio dialog, providing a ‘fly-on-the-wall experience’ of what the sessions were like".
Elvis' original 76/77 albums were fairly uninspired collections (bar a few fine singles) and on the original LPs it was almost impossible to glimpse any sign of creative input from Elvis through the syrupy overdubs.

Big Sales at Elvis Auction: The bidding was fast and furious, with the 200 different Elvis collectibles generate some $730,000 in overall sales.

The items were offered by third-party collectors from around the world, as bidding took place online, on the phone and live at the Graceland Archive Studio.
The most significant and hotly contested item during the auction was a "Birth Record" from Presley's delivering physician, the historical document after a fierce volley of bids was won by Elvis Presley Enterprises' archivist Angie Marchese for $87,500 so it can be put on display as part of Graceland's museum exhibits.
Other Big Sale numbers were
- Elvis' Black Star Sapphire ring worn gifted to his bodyguard Al Strada sold for $35,000 on an estimate of $15,000
- 1911 Indian Head Gold $2 ½ Coin and Diamond Ring, which Elvis wore in the 1970s sold for $40,000.
- Black shirt, pants and gold metal belt ensemble, sold for $37,500

Dwight Icenhower wins Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist 2016: Last night in Memphis Dwight Icenhower won the 2016 Ultimate ETA championship. Dwight began his career 18 years ago as a junior in high school performing in a high school musical.
Dwight performs 4-5 shows weekly and he keeps the audiences asking for more. Born four years after the King passed away, Dwight has studied every move that Elvis
made and has mastered the 50's, 60's, and 70's eras of Elvis' career. He has performed all over the United States as well as in England, Brazil and Mexico and has toured
Japan several times.
He's had the opportunity to share the stage with some personal friends of Elvis including: DJ Fontana, The Jordanaires, The Sweet Inspirations, Cynthia Pepper, Julie
Parrish, Charlie Hodge, and Joe Esposito. You can expect to see more of him in 2016!

Westgate (Hilton) Las Vegas Elvis Statue now Lit Up!: Ever since the Elvis Presley statue was moved into the Westgate Hotel, we Viva Las Vegas fan club members have said that it looked dark and it was hard to take good pictures. We wished for different lighting. Well, our wish has come true! Thanks to a member's discovery, we know that the WG has installed new lights! She sent me before and after photos. I also went there with another member to check it out. - It was weird to see the statue moved yet again. We also noticed the showroom sign has a name. We will be there on the August 14th to decorate the statue for Elvis Week. Nice to know the Westgate is still taking care of Elvis!

Elvis Tribute Artists prepare for Ultimate Contest: Elvis Week is in full swing clebratinng all things Elvis- from his music, movies and his personal life.
One of the biggest events of the week is the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Contest.
There are ETAs from Australia, the UK, Brazil, everything like that. Japan, as well, and it's awesome.
But no matter where they were from, all ETAs have a story on how the King of Rock 'n Roll changed his life.
"I was waiting tables and going to the University of North Texas and somebody said 'Have you ever thought of doing Elvis?' And, at first I thought 'Nah, not at all.' Then I gave it a shot and a couple of years later, it turned into a full time career," said one artist.
For some Presley brings back memories of the good old days. |

"My dad was playing records when I was a little kid, and he used to play and play them all and I used to say 'Who's this?' and he'd say 'That's Elvis Presley.' And I'd say 'Well, I want to sing like him.' And he'd say 'No one can sing like Elvis Presley.'"
Whether an amateur at the contest or a vet, all of these men have a love for all things Presley which makes Elvis Week so much fun.
"Winning this competition isn't life or death to me. It's more of just being a part of the competition."

Linda Thompson on her new book: When Linda Thompson began a whirlwind romance with Elvis Presley in 1972, he was in the midst of a critically acclaimed comeback.
“For this moment in time, he was perfection” and “the greatest sex symbol in the world,” Thompson recalls of her early days with Presley in her new memoir, A Little Thing Called Life, and you can read more in this week’s issue of PEOPLE magazine.
The book details Linda's love-at-first-sight meeting with Elvis at a Memphis movie screening that she was invited to by the singer. "From our first moments together, our relationship was all-encompassing," she writes in her memoir. "The first year of the four and half we would share, we were together 24 hours a day."
But in the course of her nearly five-year relationship with Presley, Thompson would see the iconic singer’s health decline as his prescription pill abuse increasingly took hold, and his vanity led him to try extreme diets – including one in which a doctor kept him under near-constant sedation for two weeks so he couldn’t eat.
In her memoir, the actress and lyricist describes the harrowing moment she found Presley facedown in a bowl of chicken noodle soup, seemingly so impaired by drugs that he’d passed out.
“Whatever he took besides the Placidyl for sleeping had hit him hard and fast. I shouted to wake him up, but he was completely passed out,” Thompson recalls. “Terrified, I jumped onto the bed. As I held his head up by his hair, he had chicken soup and noodles all over his face. I started to clean his throat, literally pulling out chunks of food.” |

Thompson gave Presley a shot of Ritalin to revive him until a doctor could arrive.
“A few hours later, he awoke,” she writes.
“ ’M-M-M-Mommy,’ ” she recalls Presley saying, referring to Thompson by his nickname for her. “ ‘I-I-I-I had a-a-a dream. I dreamed that I was dying.’ ”
In 1976, Thompson finally decided she needed to end their once-glorious romance, and she moved out of Presley’s home. But she was heartbroken when, just eight months later, she received a call from Presley’s then-9-year-old daughter, Lisa Marie, who told her, “My daddy’s dead!”
Thompson notes that she was “frozen by a dread of acknowledging the truth.”
But Lisa Marie insisted: “He smothered in the carpet!”
Thompson was Presley’s daughter’s first call, she writes in her memoir, despite the fact that the king of rock and roll was already engaged to Ginger Alden at that point.
“That was that,” Thompson writes in her memoir. “Forty-two years old, and gone.”

Elvis New RPO release - Kentucky Rain sample: The second volume of Elvis remixed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra' is due out in October 2016.
Originally EIN reported on December 27 last year that album producer Don Reedman noted that plans were underway for a new Elvis Gospel album featuring the RPO. Perhaps plans have changed, or more likely Gospel material will also be included in the new RPO album.

Restoration work about to begin at Elvis’ Circle G Ranch: As the faithful gather in Memphis for Elvis Week events, work is about to heat up just to the south at Presley's former Circle G Ranch in Horn Lake.
Destin, Florida-based real estate developer Davage "Buddy" Runnels Jr., who bought the property at Goodman Road and Miss. 301 in 2014 for an undisclosed price, says the first visible steps are at hand toward creating what he hopes will be become a showcase destination for Elvis fans visiting Graceland.
"Within the next 120 days, there will be work people can see," Runnels said Friday. He said those initial steps include relocating the cottage where Elvis and Priscilla honeymooned in 1967 to another spot on the property and starting work on a stable reconstruction project.
The work, when it begins, will represent tangible evidence of a massive and ambitious plan that in time calls for a sprawling, musically-themed "leisure entertainment destination." Runnels' vision includes a $3.2 million first phase that he said in April he hoped to have complete within a year.
Included in long-range are restoration of the honeymoon cottage and stables, a restaurant, a "dynamic water display" with fountains on the property's 14-acre lake and construction of a memorial to children killed in the Holocaust.
Less visible, but equally important to the project moving forward, is infrastructure work by Horn Lake, also about to begin.
Elvis bought the ranch in the 1960s as a getaway that would still be near Graceland. After he and Priscilla married, they spent part of their honeymoon there, but the property has fallen into disrepair in the years since Elvis' death.

Groups threaten to "Shut Down Graceland": What is going on in Memphis this year - as yet more demonstrations are being announced as Black Lives Matter and other protest groups announced that they plan to "Shut Down Graceland."
Protest leaders say the mass demonstration is planned for 6:00 PM Monday. They said they specifically chose Graceland because it is Elvis week and they know it will raise awareness.
Leaders say they also chose Graceland because "it demonstrates one of Memphis's most common forms of financial inequality"
If carried out, the Elvis Week demonstration will be the third high-profile protest by Black Lives Matter and other |

groups in the last month.
Most recently in front of Graceland, where some protesters were detained for blocking traffic.
At the time, activists said they wanted their demands met by the city, which they admitted would take time.
Mayor Jim Strickland just responded this week to questions from the first community meeting.

Lisa Marie has checked into rehab: More bad news for Elvis Week as it is reported that Lisa Marie, 48, is reportedly seeking treatment for a painkiller addiction at the exclusive Hills Treatment Center in Los Angeles, which costs $400 000 a month.
Lisa Marie has previously spoken openly about being addicted to drugs and alcohol as a teenager and admitted she was shocked to still be alive.
Speaking in 2003, she said: “”[I used] cocaine, sedatives, pot and drinking -- all at the same time. I just couldn't be sober.
“I don't know how I lived through it.”
At the time, she credited Scientology for her recovery.
It has been a difficult time for the singer, as she recently filed for a legal separation from Michael Lockwood after 10 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences.
She initially filed for divorce, but then changed the status, though the reasons why are not clear.
Lisa Marie has requested full custody of the couple's seven-year-old twin daughters, Finley and Harper, and asked for her estranged spouse to receive monitored visitation. They already have a postnuptial agreement in place to divide their assets.
Lisa Marie also has children Riley Keough, 27, and Benjamin Keough, 23, from her previous marriage to Danny Keough.

Two New FTD Releases: Two new FTD releases have been announced for early september.
- 'Hometown Shows' new FTD CD - The 'Hometown Shows' is another FTD double-CD release this time focusing on Elvis' Memphis performance from 1974/75. It features two legendary shows from the Mid-South Coliseum, Memphis, the March 17, 1974 (evening show) and June 10, 1975 performance.
The March 17, 1974 ES soundboard is a brand new unreleased show, while June 10 1975 is one of Elvis' best mid-seventies concerts which has been previously out on bootleg, most recently on 'Bringing It All Back Home'. It is an excellent show and in GREAT sound.
This 1975 concert provided us with the great Ed Bonja cover photo for the 'From EP Boulevard' album (below) so you know that Elvis was up for a good time!.

The Guest House at Graceland to open in October: The Guest House at Graceland is a six-story, 450-room hotel, opening Oct. 27 just steps from Elvis' former home. The exterior, with columns, arches and a portico, evokes the feel of a comfortable Southern Colonial home, but the interior design and amenities are modern.
"This luxury hotel is the most significant enhancement to Graceland since we opened in 1982," Priscilla Presley said, "This is huge ... I feel that it's just so right for fans, and our guests, and tourists."
The hotel is the first of its kind in the working- and middle-class Memphis neighbourhood of Whitehaven. Droves of applicants flocked to a job fair Saturday, and the hotel will employ about 450 people. When the hotel opens, room prices will range from $149 for basic rooms to $1,300 for the highest-priced suite.
The location lets Elvis fans stay within walking distance of Graceland and the tourist attractions across the street, but it will likely attract other visitors as well. It will offer the most upscale accommodations in the immediate area.

The Guest House at Graceland also promises to become one of the city's top lodging options, along with the Peabody and the Madison several miles away in the downtown area.
The total investment in the hotel is about $92 million, the hotel is still under construction but colours associated with The King already are present, such as touches of purple and gold in the carpeting and hallways, gold lighting in the 464-seat theatre, and a picture of Elvis in a gold jacket hanging on the textured grey walls of guest rooms. (EIN NOTE - Elvis' head is not showing, the EPE example image -right - is NOT of Elvis!) At 386,000 square feet, it's about 22 times the size of the Graceland house.
"There's not a whole lot of Elvis bling," said Elvis Presley Enterprises CEO Jack Soden. "It's much more subtle. It's very cool."

The circular lobby is illuminated by natural light streaming through large windows. The Lobby Lounge is an eating and drinking spot with indoor and outdoor seating. Nearby is E.P.'s Bar and Grill, a sports bar-themed restaurant with televisions and a pool table plus another restaurant, Delta's Kitchen, also a coffee bar and room service will be available.
Priscilla Presley said suites will have unique themes. The King's Suite will be designed like Elvis Presley's master bedroom, with rich red and black tones and a custom-draped canopy bed.
The property will also include a swimming pool, adding to the resort feel.
"It really is quite beautiful, and it is subtle, and it is contemporary, and it's classy," Priscilla Presley noted.

Panama City Center "Elvis" exhibition: Panama City, Florida, Center for the Arts is holding an Elvis Exhibition for the whole month of August.
This show is all about the man, the legend, and the pop icon, Elvis Presley, and it's fittingly called "Elvis."
The exhibit opened earlier this month and runs through September 3 in the center's main gallery.
"ELVIS" runs August 2 - September 3, 2016 - and it is FREE.

Inside Elvis Presley's Legendary Man-Cave Studio: Rolling Stone have recently published a lengthy article about Elvis' Jungle Room.
...Elvis never called it the Jungle Room. For him, his breathtakingly garish tiki-tinged, ostentatious kitsch - was merely "the den." Constructed in 1965 as an addition to Graceland, Presley's already-fabled Memphis headquarters, the room was the nerve center of his home life.
The den received its evocative sobriquet from a journalist soon after Graceland opened to the public in 1982, five years after Presley's death. The newly dubbed Jungle Room was an immediate fan favorite, and not just because of the novelty.
The storied space also served as the site of Presley's final recording sessions. On a handful of nights in February and October of 1976, Presley cut 16 titles there with the help of mobile studio equipment. These tracks formed the bulk of Presley's last two albums released before his death: From Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, Tennessee (1976) and Moody Blue (1977).

Now the historic tapes are getting new life via Elvis: Way Down in the Jungle Room. The two-disc set, out now, is the most complete collection of Presley's studio swansong ever assembled, including rare outtakes and alternate versions. Interest in Presley's music has continued unabated for more than six decades, but the release has brought renewed attention to the Jungle Room. Alongside his birth home in Tupelo, Mississippi, and the floor of Memphis' Sun Studio, it remains one of the most holy places in all of Presleydom.
The 14-by-40-foot area that became the Jungle Room was originally an open patio at the rear of Graceland, just behind the kitchen. Its transformation began in the early Sixties, following

Presley's return from military duty in West Germany. Thrilled to be home, the singer embarked on a series of improvement projects. After toying with the idea of building a two-story octagonal building made entirely of aluminum to house offices and a home studio, he settled on the more modest task of converting the patio into a screened porch.
By 1965 this had been fully enclosed into what would today be called a "man cave." Thick drapery permanently cast the room into darkness, making it the ideal spot for Presley and his boys to put up their feet at all hours of the day and night. Still, it had yet to receive its distinctive décor. "None of the jungle stuff was there, then," remembered Presley associate Marty Lacker in the book Elvis and the Memphis Mafia. "Vernon decorated that room with furniture from Sears, with these big round tables like you'd see in a restaurant, with high chrome bottoms and big round black tops." According to Graceland's housekeeper at the time, the space also contained two sectional couches and a large high-backed chair for Presley, all upholstered in blond leather.
Perhaps more troubling to executives at RCA, Presley had grown disinterested in recording. RCA did what it could to make the recording process more enticing. They offered to hold sessions in Memphis, but top-of-the-line local facilities like American Sound Studios and Stax had recently shuttered. Facing limited options, producer Felton Jarvis had a novel idea: Why not bring the studio to Presley?
The furniture was cleared, the burbling waterfall switched off, and blankets hung as sound baffles. On February 2nd, 1976, Elvis and his team were ready to roll. The makeshift studio lacked the isolation rooms or vocal booths found in more formal set-ups, and more than a dozen band members and their instruments all squeezed in, elbow to elbow. "Elvis always wanted the musicians and the singers right with him," says James Burton, a fixture on guitar since 1969. "That's because Elvis fed off of the emotion and the dynamics that you can get when communicating as musicians and artists," continued drummer Ronnie Tutt, "And that is the best way that music is made."
A dozen songs were completed over the course of six nights. Sessions usually began at 9 p.m., with Presley seldom making his entrance before midnight. Once everyone warmed up with a few gospel standards, work would continue until the early hours of the morning. Felton and engineer Brian Christian monitored the proceedings via closed circuit camera from their command center in the studio truck parked outside the windows. Presley would deliver his vocal parts on the landing adjacent to the kitchen, bathed in the glow of an ever-changing colored light bulb - swapped out as the mood of the song dictated. "We need a red light in here like a whorehouse, so these guys will be playing better," he quipped.
In spite of the homey nature of these sessions, Presley chose to record some the most heartbreaking material of his career. It was obvious that Presley was lonely and adrift. His relationship with Linda Thompson had begun to falter, and they would split later in the year. Session tapes reveal a man working through his regrets the only way he knows how: through his music.
His spirits lifted on the fourth night when he tackled "For the Heart," an uptempo track penned by Dennis Linde, who had written "Burning Love" years before. Several run-throughs left Presley primed to take on Roy Hamilton's "Hurt" with a power and passion unseen so far during the session. Previous nights had seen Presley being forced to change keys to accommodate his vocal cords, weathered by middle age. But there were no such compromises on "Hurt." He assailed the first few bars with a primal roar that could have only originated in the Jungle Room. That famous voice was back; the King had returned. The moment is a highlight not only of the sessions, but also of his entire Seventies output.

Memphis Citizens Group To Demonstrate during Elvis Week: A local citizens group is promising a demonstration during the annual candlelight vigil at Graceland. The grassroots group Coalition of Concerned Citizens promised the demonstration would happen during the vigil Monday, August 15.
On Monday evening, EPE's Kevin Kern released a statement in response: "As Memphis prepares for the arrival of visitors to celebrate the life and legacy of Elvis Presley, Graceland is actively working with local law enforcement agencies, as it does every year, to ensure the public's safety and security."
In July, more than 100 people marched down Elvis Presley Boulevard, leading to six arrests for obstructing a highway.
Similar to that protest, organizers say the planned gathering during Elvis Week will highlight economic and education disparities in Whitehaven and other areas of Memphis.
"We plan to go and demonstrate peacefully, non-violently, but certainly with the intention of drawing attention that there is severe poverty and ignorance in this city based on a poor education system" noted the Coalition of Concerned Citizens.

'Way Down In The Jungle Room' Positive Daily Mail Review: Released Friday, it is a nice surprise to see the Daily Mail giving the new Elvis release such a positive review.
"Verdict: The King's twilight years revisited - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars". The general media certainly didn't give those positive ratings to Elvis' original vinyl albums back in 1976/77!!

Elvis died in 1977, but the previous year had seen him grafting away in his Graceland mansion, recording new songs with his touring band in a Hawaiian-themed home studio known as the Jungle Room. Those tracks have now been gathered together for the first time to paint a complete picture of those sessions.
Elvis wasn't ancient when he made this music. At 41, he was younger than Robbie Williams, Liam Gallagher and most of the Spice Girls are now.
That unmistakable voice, too, was still in fine fettle. The hip-shaking energy of youth had gone, but the immaculate phrasing was still there. Like an ageing opera singer, he could explore the lower notes with spine-tingling power on country ballads like Love Coming Down. |

He also had a superb group. Country-soul guitarist James Burton, bassist Jerry Scheff, keyboard player Glen Hardin and drummer Ronnie Tutt - the core of his TCB Band - had been with him since the Sixties.
They had developed their musical chemistry during his Las Vegas residencies, and the songs laid down in The Jungle Room were all recorded in single takes, with everyone crammed into the same room.
Presley relished the intimacy. He imbued the lively pop single Way Down with a swampy, southern feel and gave the blues ballad Pledging My Love a doo-wop makeover.
But he was still coming to terms with his divorce, finalised three years previously, and there's an authenticity to his wounded rendition of She Thinks I Still Care.

It's Easy For You, written for him by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, finds Elvis lamenting the wife and children that he 'threw away'.
There are some ill-advised song choices. His attempt at Neil Sedaka's Solitaire is wayward. His take on He'll Have To Go isn't a patch on the earlier Jim Reeves version. But his Danny Boy, backed by simple piano and the gospel harmonies of the Stamps, is heartfelt.
The second disc of newly-mixed out-takes offers a glimpse of Elvis and his band in the raw. The songs are less polished but more passionate, with Bitter They Are, Harder They Fall benefiting from the absence of a suffocating string section and She Thinks I Still Care revamped as a honky-tonk workout that harks back to his rock 'n' roll roots.
Some of the asides from Elvis - 'don't hold back, guys, emphasise the chord changes' - also suggest he still cared ardently about the music he was making. Less than a year later, he was gone. But, captured here in 1976, the King was alive and kicking. -

South Dakota judge weighing fate of Elvis Guitar: The fate of a guitar played by Elvis Presley and later donated to the National Music Museum is in the hands of a federal judge in South Dakota.
Tennessee-based collector Larry Moss maintains that the blues guitarist and memorabilia broker who donated the guitar to the Vermillion museum in 2013 had no rights to the instrument. Moss claims to be the rightful owner and wants the museum to return the guitar.
Back in July 2014 EIN reported that the acoustic guitar Elvis Presley smashed during his final tour had sparked a custody fight.
It was going to be up to a federal judge must sort out whether blues guitarist Robert A. Johnson even technically owned the broken instrument when he donated it to the National Music Museum along with one of Bob Dylan's harmonicas, a guitar made for Johnny Cash and two other items.
The museum, based in Vermillion, insists in a lawsuit that it is the legal owner of Elvis' Martin D-35, which the rock-and-roll king played during his 1977 tour and gave to a fan in St. Petersburg, Florida, after he broke it when a strap and string snapped.Donor Robert Johnson hasn't responded to Moss's lawsuit, but he told the Argus Leader he rejects Moss's claims.

This will be re-created in concert using a 40-piece orchestra to replicate the original album work of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Now Australian and New Zealand fans will have a chance to experience the man who changed the course of popular music live on screen, with a full 40-piece Orchestra live on stage performing the King of Rock and Roll’s most well-known “rocking” songs and his tender, heart-wrenching ballads.
No concerts dates have been announced as yet, Tickets should go on sale next month

Described as 'the most complete and comprehensive collection of Presley's final studio recordings ever assembled in one anthology, "Way Down In The Jungle Room" is an essential and welcome addition for every fan's library. "Way Down In The Jungle Room" brings together, for the first time in one collection, master recordings and rare outtakes laid down during two mythic sessions (February 2-8, 1976 and October 28-30, 1976) in Graceland's den -- known as the Jungle Room -- which was converted into a professional caliber recording studio for the purpose of capturing these indelible performances. The outtakes have been newly mixed by Grammy Award-winning engineer Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis, Tennessee. |

In 1976 with the help of RCA's mobile recording truck and longtime producer Felton Jarvis and engineer Mike Moran at the board, Elvis tackled a far-ranging mix of country and pop covers ("Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," "Danny Boy," "Solitaire") and late-period classics of his catalog, such as "Moody Blue" and "Way Down." t studio albums released during Elvis' lifetime.
According to the album's producers, "Way Down In The Jungle Room" has been resequenced to "bring a fresh perspective to the material." The material on Disc 2 - The Outtakes was mixed for this collection at the Sam Phillips Recording Service in Memphis and includes both outtakes and in-the-studio dialog, providing a "fly-on-the-wall experience of what the sessions were like." With the exception of track 13 ("She Thinks I Still Care"), the performances on Disc 2 have been sequenced in the order they were recorded.

Barbara Gray, the mystery beauty who kissed The King: It started as a kiss between two 21-year-olds, but would become one of the sexiest photos in rock and roll history.
Her name is Barbara Gray, and she remained anonymous for 60 years. She never wanted fame or fortune, she just yearned to be recognized as the beauty caught in the iconic embrace.
Now she is aged 80, is happily married and is a real estate manager in South Carolina, but has one regret - that she let him go.
On the 60th anniversary the snap was taken, she has revealed how her friends dared her to prank call his hotel in Charleston after they had seen the star perform.
'The operator answered and I said "Elvis Presley's room please,"' she told WTVR. Barbara, then 21 and known as Bobbi Owens, said she ended up chatting to Elvis for around an hour. At the time he was still touring around the country, but was still far from the level of stardom he would reach in the next decade.

But Elvis was curious about the random woman who had called up to his room, so he invited her to his next concert in Virginia. Two days later the pair met up at the Hotel Jefferson in Richmond, and it would be the start of a short yet racy liaison.
'He just reached out and hugged me, I didn't know what to say. It was like I was numb.'
'Elvis turned around and I almost fainted. He was absolutely gorgeous. I just melted.'
They then went to the Mosque Theater where The King was due to appear that night. While they were backstage, he leaned in for a kiss, but Barbara said no.
'I said no I'm not. He said: 'Yes you are,' she added. 'And he was just quick enough to just lean forward and stick his tongue out and that is how quick it happened.'

Elvis' 1956 Mystery Kisser Found! Former Memphis radio engineer Ron Brandon believes that he has finally found the famous 1956 'Elvis Mystery Kisser'. In 1956 it was Ron Brandon who recorded the famous Mississippi-Alabama Fair concert and so was well aware of the iconic photographs of Alfred Wertheimer including the ones taken in June 1956 at an Elvis concert in Richmond, Virginia. There were over forty of the photos of Elvis many of them featuring an attractive young lady. One or two of these photographs, in particular, have become quite famous.. photos of Elvis apparently attempting to kiss the young lady.
In 2010, earlier this year Brandon "stumbled upon" the woman who claimed to be the mystery kisser in the photos. Having lived in Richmond at one time, Brandon was intrigued enough follow through with a full interview - and was convinced without any reservation whatever, that she is the mystery kisser.
This led to a phone-call with Mr. Wertheimer, Ron Brandon and the mystery kisser - which in the end was sworn to confidentiality....

Elvis in Florida 60th Anniversary: Celebrating the 60th anniversary of Elvis' infamous concerts in Florida, two Jacksonville residents share their memories of the history-making performances.
Jackie Rowland first saw Elvis Presley perform at the Gator Bowl in 1955, and her mother took her to meet Presley in Memphis in July 1956. They had a relationship that lasted several years - always chaperoned by her mother.
Elvis Presley was well on his way to becoming a national sensation when he came to Jacksonville in August 1956. When he performed on stage, audiences got to experience the whole package: the sultry voice, the jet-black hair, the crooked smile that was both boyish and sexy. And of course, those gyrating hips. They drove young women wild, and there were reports of adoring fans rushing toward the singer to try to tear off pieces of his clothing as a result of the suggestive movements.
When Presley came to the Jacksonville in '56, a local judge warned him to keep his moves in check, or face the prospect of going to jail. No hip-swinging motions "impairing the morals of minors" would be tolerated.
That meeting with Juvenile Court Judge Marion Gooding, and the six shows that Presley did Aug. 10-11 at the Florida Theatre under Gooding's watchful eye, ended up in a story on Presley soon afterward in Life magazine. Eventually, the performances became part of pop culture history.
Marilyn Gooding DeSimone, one of Judge Gooding's daughters and Jackie Rowland, who dated Presley off and on for a few years share some memories.

Marilyn Gooding: Elvis was making appearances in South Florida, and everywhere he went, the kids would wreck the premises. It was all in good fun, but people got hurt. So city officials called media to warn them. They said, "You can't let that happen, it gets kids in a frenzy." My father said, "I will have 'Colonel' Parker and Mr. Presley come into my chambers and we will discuss the parameters."
My father said that Elvis could not have been more polite, but Colonel Parker was heavy-handed and a bully. He said that when he met Elvis, he really liked him, and he spoke highly of his mother - Elvis was very devoted to his mother, and I think because of that, he respected an older generation.
But my father was not going to have an unruly show. He told Elvis he could do his entire act, but he couldn't wiggle his hips, and Elvis promised he would not. My father and members of his staff in juvenile court went to all six shows to make sure he would not do it. They also had policemen waiting in the wings, and they had warrants sitting on my father's lap, but they never had to issue them.
My mother took me down to the theater in our station wagon, loaded with kids. I would have just turned 17.
I can't remember which show we went to, but it was one of the evening shows. Inside, it was pandemonium - wonderful pandemonium, not bad pandemonium.

But I was sitting there judgmentally. I was not a happy camper - I was defensive of my father, who was getting a lot of criticism. So Elvis started the show, and in every single song, he'd almost wiggle his hips, then catch himself.
Then he got to his last song, and he said, "I want to dedicate my last song to the judge." And then he sang "You ain't nothing but a hound dog. ." I laughed and laughed. My father laughed, too.
Everybody who went in came out happy and excited, and sad that it was over. But there were no problems, no arrests, and that's because the community was prepared, when other communities were not.
Jackie Rowland: The first time I met him was at the Gator Bowl in 1955. My granddaddy was an officer in the police department, I was escorted by a policeman to the side of the stage, and that's where I saw him perform. It was more than a school crush. I was in love with the boy. Then my mother and I went to Memphis in July 1956. I was 14, I had been overweight, and she promised me if I would lose weight, she would take me to meet him. We were standing outside the house on Audubon Drive, along with some other girls, and Mrs. Presley was there, and apparently she had been watching me and my mother. She invited us in. His mother and my mother had a lot in common, and they got along quite well. |
Later we got a letter, saying come backstage to meet him. My mother had the letter, we went to the stage door, but the guard refused to let us in. Colonel Tom Parker said, "Oh, no, those are Elvis' special guests," and let us in. We were standing in the wings for the show. I felt so special. I have a picture of us together.
The meeting with the judge was in the newspaper. Everybody knew about it. Elvis made light of what could have been a very bad situation.
Can you imagine? It's so wonderful to be part of history. I would have never thought in a million years that 60 years later I would still be talking about it. What a blessing, to have something that brought me so much joy and to be able to share that with other people.
He was able to look at his audience and draw them in and make every single girl imagine that he was singing to them. He had that kind of charisma and talent.
I traveled to Memphis, Orlando, and other cities to see him. We had a relationship that went on for a couple of years. Wherever we went, my mother was always with me. I was always chaperoned by my mother. My mother didn't like the fact that he was an entertainer. She did her best to separate us so I would have an education. She said I was going to finish school, and I did.

Elvis' BMW heading to Pebble Beach: If you're a classic car fan and you're heading to Monterey this August for the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, prepare to get all shook up. Elvis Presley's 1957 BMW 507 Series I Roadster is heading to this year's event as part of BMW's Centennial Display.
The King's love affair with cars is almost as well documented as his life in music and one of early automotive crushes was on the Albert Graf Goertz-designed 3.3-liter V8-powered roadster.
The story goes that while completing his national service in Germany, Presley traveled to France where he saw the 507 race at the Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry. It was love at first sight and in December 1958 he leased the actual car.
Unfortunately the car was finished in feather white, meaning that every time he parked it, its color made it easy for fans to cover it in phone numbers, pledges of devotion and lipstick kisses.

the car repainted a bright red. Elvis sold the car in the early 1960s, but not before he'd been photographed in it many times.
On August 21 at Pebble Beach the newly restored car will be revealed to the public for the very first time alongside a host of other BMW classics.
The 507 Roadster and its rarer Series II convertible sister are among the most sought-after and collectable BMW cars. In terms of value, a pristine example, without the provenance of being once owned by 'The King' is worth upwards of $2 million.

Elvis 1968 Electric Guitar at Auction: Elvis Week is rapidly approaching at Graceland, and in honor of the celebration, several of the King’s personal items are going up for auction, including his electric guitar.
One delightful item being auctioned is Elvis' well-used and beautifully worn electric guitar that was used in rehearsal for the 1968 Elvis Special. The instrument features a cherry sunburst finish with mother-of-pearl inlays in the fretboard, and also includes a modern Gibson hard-shell black case. The guitar has an estimated value of $30,000, but bids will begin at $10,000 when the auction opens on August 13.
Along with the guitar are several other valuables from the icon, including Presley’s birth record, a black and gold outfit he performed in, an Indian ring, and a TCB necklace.
The guitar was gifted by Presley to Nancy Rooks, a maid and cook, and her husband, who has had the guitar in his possession for more than 25 years.
The auction will begin on August 13 at 2 p.m. CT.

“Million Dollar Quartet” Show coming to Australia: The “Million Dollar Quartet” recording session of December 4, 1956, which took place in Sun Record Studios in Memphis, is now legendary. The impromptu jam session involving Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins, produced almost 50 tracks and is considered a seminal moment in rock ‘n’ roll history.
Million Dollar Quartet, the jukebox musical which dramatises that day of recording, has toured extensively around the US and played Broadway and the West End, and in December this year will kick off its first Australian tour in Melbourne. The musical played for over a year on Broadway and picked up three Tony Award nominations, including one for Best Musical and one for Best Book of a Musical for the script penned by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux.

The musical features Blue Suede Shoes, Great Balls of Fire, See You Later Alligator, I Walk the Line, Fever, Who Do You Love?, That’s All Right, Sixteen Tons, Whole Lotta Shakin Goin’ On, Folsom Prison Blues, and Hound Dog.

'Elvis - June 72' New FTD Book: FTD book publisher Pål Granlund has announced a new book "Coming soon" from FTD / Flaming Star. It will focus on Elvis at his fabulous Madison Square Garden concerts and his June 72 tour.
Pål Granlund was in New York in 1972 for the MSG concerts and there are photographs of him meeting Elvis backstage, so the book will no doubt feature his personal stories (in the same way that The Elvis Files feature Erik Lorentzen's recollections) and much, much more.
After the stunning success of the recently published Elvis Taking Care Of Business - In A Flash there will be very high expectations for this new book.

'Speedway' - FTD Soundtrack Album Review: Speedway was Elvis' very last Soundtrack album. With the intention of recreating the dynamic atmosphere of 1963’s Viva Las Vegas, MGM cast hot property Nancy Sinatra as Elvis’ co-star but there was no chemistry between them. The original session took place on the MGM soundstage and the recordings flooded in echo sounded terrible. Luckily the four-track MGM Masters still exist and have been remixed for this release creating the best quality recordings we have to date.
With only ‘Let Yourself Go’ and 'Suppose' as the stand out tracks the album was a very dull affair
However several previously unreleased outtakes of the Bonus songs ‘Mine’ and ‘Goin’ Home’ are also included here, help add interest and make CD 1 a packed 79 minutes.
Remarkably with such lacklustre original material FTD have managed to create a rather worthy classic soundtrack album.

All Shook Up - EIN Spotlight: Composer Otis Blackwell liked to boast that he could write a song about anything. So when music publisher and lyricist Aaron ‘Goldie’ Goldmark dropped a Pepsi on the floor and urged Blackwell to turn that into a hit, the songwriter did precisely that.
But Elvis' classic 1957 hit All Shook Up wasn't the first version released - what Elvis managed to do was to transform the demo into something unique with a playfulness, sense of freedom and simple instrumentation that were all reminiscent of the more innocent, earlier understated sound of Sun Records.

Glen Hardin at Elvis Week 2016: When Elvis needed the best piano player to join the TCB Band, he looked no further than Glen D. Hardin.
Glen spent many years on the road and in the studio with Elvis, also appearing alongside him in his iconic TV special, "Aloha from Hawaii." Glen will share his memories of working with Elvis at An Afternoon with Elvis' Piano Man, Glen D. Hardin, on Monday, August 15 during Elvis Week.
Glen, a Texas native, grew up with Joe B. Maudlin and drummer Jerry Allison, both members of Buddy Holly's band, The Crickets. After Holly's death, Glen played with the band and became an honorary member. In addition to writing hit songs, he was also in-demand session pianist, and he worked with John Denver, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings etc.
Elvis called Glen in 1970 and asked him to join the TCB Band to replace Larry Muhoberac. Glen toured and recorded with Elvis until 1976. He also arranged many of Elvis' hit songs, like "Let It Be Me," "The Wonder of You" and "I Just Can't Help Believin.'" Elvis would decide to do a new song on a whim, and he and Glen would often stay up overnight working on arrangements.
After working with Elvis, Glen worked closely with Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris.
Glen and musician Andy Childs will share stories and music at the Elvis Week event on August 15.

'ELVIS Las Vegas 1975' FTD CD Review: FTD This FTD double-album features two of Elvis' best concerts from his Las Vegas March/April 1975 season.
The March 22 Midnight show is considered one of the best concerts of the season and was first released on the Fort Baxter bootleg 'A Profile Vol. 2' while the April 1st Dinner Show captures an enthusiastic Elvis in great humor.
The last time RCA rolled their tapes across an Elvis concert was twelve months before and now his set-list included EIGHT new songs not performed in Memphis back in ‘74. It was ridiculous that this season was never recorded professionally.
Throughout the season Elvis was in fine voice and the excellent set-list includes 'Big Boss Man', 'It's Midnight', 'Promised Land', 'My Boy', 'Fairytale' as well as the one-off 'You're The Reason I'm Living'.

'ELVIS On Television The Complete Sound Recordings' Review: The 60th anniversary of Elvis’ first appearance on national television is celebrated with this 2CD/100-page set.
The new MRS box-set was publicised as containing the complete archival recordings of Elvis Presley’s television appearances from 1956-60. For the first time ever, these tracks been painstakingly remastered and restored.
The recordings contain all song tracks, comedy sketch routines and interviews including the extended Wink Martindale interview.
The 100-page book is a chronological photo journey following Elvis from the very first in 1956, to his appearance on The Frank Sinatra show in 1960. It contains liner notes accompanied by many rare and new unpublished photographs.
In the individual chapters Gordon Minto provides the main details and highlights of each TV performance. Matching the text, each chapter features around 15 pages of significant photographs, a surprising number of the in colour.

Coco Palms Elvis Bungalow Demolished: Some sad news to report in relation to Elvis' bungalow at the Coco Palms
- heard this from our good friend & CCP tour guide Bob Kauai Jasper earlier today......
"For some time now we've all been excited to have Elvis's bungalow moved and restored. Since then contractors have been examining the building, checking the structure for wood rot, termite damage and hazardous materials. The reports were not good but a permit was applied for. Because of the horrible condition of the bungalow, permits were denied. It had to be demolished ..... This photo sadly shows Elvis' old bungalow as it is today. To rebuild would be senseless because it would be a replica, not the real thing.
However everything else from Blue Hawaii will remain....the bar, the dining room, that beautiful lagoon from the wedding scene. Coco Palms will still be full of memories of Elvis".

28 June, 2016 - Scotty Moore - Guitar Legend, Has Died: EIN has just been informed that the guitar legend Scotty Moore passed away a few hours ago. He was 84.
Trevor Cajiao (of ETM&HM) has verified this truly sad news.
Scotty Moore was in the delivery room when Rock & Roll was born, kicking and howling in the Tennessee night. Without the driving force and support of Scotty Moore, the start of Elvis Presley's career would have been very different.
On July 5, 1954, it was guitarist Scotty Moore, bass player Bill Black and a newcomer from Tupelo, Mississippi, by the name of Elvis Aaron Presley that recorded ‘That's All Right’ at the Memphis Recording Service - the world was never to be the same again.’
It is noteworthy that 'That's All Right' (Sun 209) was credited to "Elvis Presley, Scotty and Bill." Scotty, Bill Black & D.J Fontana were Elvis' key musicians through to 1958 when Elvis went into the army. Scotty Moore would return for Elvis' all important 1960 recording sessions and would keep on working with Elvis until the 1968 Comeback show.

'Way Down in the Jungle Room' at Phillips Recording Service: The Memphis Commercial Appeal notes that back in May they reported some interesting Elvis Presley happenings afoot at the Phillips Recording Service. Although details were vague, officials from Sony/Legacy and longtime Elvis band members were on hand at Phillips to work on tracks for an upcoming project. The work was reportedly for a 40th anniversary package marking the King's 1976 home recording sessions at Graceland's Jungle Room.
Last week, Sony/Legacy finally did confirm that a two-disc collection titled "Way Down in the Jungle Room" will come out Aug. 5, just in time for annual Elvis Week festivities. The double disc set rounds up the results of sessions Presley cut in the Jungle Room in winter and fall 1976, with a core of longtime TCB band members including guitarist James Burton and drummer Ronnie Tutt.
While the first disc will include all the masters, it's the previously unreleased outtakes and alternate versions that are of particular interest. Those tracks were mixed by Memphian and Grammy-winning engineer Matt Ross-Spang, the longtime Sun Studio ace, currently working out of Phillips Recording Service. |

"I was recommended to Sony's Rob Santos," says Ross-Spang of his involvement with the project. "He comes to Memphis quite a bit and knows the Phillips family. I mentioned that my favorite place to work was Phillips, and he's always wanted to do something there, so it came together pretty perfectly."
"We mixed 18 tracks from the Jungle Room sessions, and the really cool thing is James Burton, Norbert Putnam, David Briggs, Ronnie Tutt - all those guys who played with Elvis came to town and hung out while I mixed," says Ross-Spang. "It's pretty interesting mixing with James Burton standing over your shoulder."

Ross-Spang's work offers a sparer-sounding version of the Jungle Room material. "Those songs were originally done on 16-track at the house, but afterwards Felton Jarvis took the tracks back to Nashville and added strings and horns and overdubs. Which was cool, but it's really great just to have the original kind of swamp-y tracks, real bare bones. I think that's where some of the material really shines."
The sessions find Presley in rare form, feeling comfortable in his home environs and chatty with his band. "It was neat to hear that side of him and to hear all those guys in a room together playing," says Ross-Spang. "It was pretty wild to solo tracks and hear Elvis laugh and joke around with the boys. Or listening and getting chills hearing him do 'Danny Boy' or something. I've worked with a lot of people who thought they were Elvis, so it was really cool to work with the real thing." |
Ross-Spang says he tried kept the project pure from a technical standpoint. "Obviously, with all my time at Sun, I'm a massive Elvis fan. I think oftentimes these kinds of projects go to people who maybe aren't the biggest fans, and maybe they want to make it too modern. I'm such a fan of the old stuff that I wanted to keep it in that tradition. We mixed all analog; I used original tape slaps and the Phillips echo chambers and plate reverbs. We kept it mixed how it would've been done back then."
The sessions were particularly special for Knox and Halley, Jerry and Jud and other members of the Phillips family, who have been working diligently over the past couple of years to renovate and relaunch the family studio. "There's three echo chambers at Phillips, and two of them we just rewired right before the session," Ross-Spang says. "So the first thing to run through them was Elvis Presley. Elvis never recorded at Phillips, so it was a pretty magical thing to have him christening the chambers."

Paul Dowling EIN Interview Part Two: Paul Dowling is without doubt one of the major names in the Elvis World. He started collecting and selling Elvis vinyl over 40 years ago and has one of the world's largest Elvis Presley record collections. He started his "WorldWide Elvis" shop back in the seventies, way before the internet, where fans could get hold of rare Elvis records and memorabilia.
With such a fascination with Elvis, Dowling not only became a big name in the early years of Elvis bootlegs but later became friends with Ernst Jorgensen and helped RCA with various official releases.

'Elvis At Christmas' the next Elvis & the RPO release?: Elvis Matters fan club suggests that the next 'Elvis and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra' release will be titled 'Elvis At Christmas'.
Originally EIN reported on December 27 last year that album producer Don Reedman noted that plans were underway for a new Elvis Gospel album featuring the RPO. Perhaps plans have changed, or more likely Gospel material will also be included in the new RPO album. The "Christmas Duets" album was of course not as big a success as had been hoped for.
In Elvis Matters next June magazine they have an exclusive interview with the managing director of the orchestra. During the conversation Ian Maclay told them the news that during the next few months a Christmas album will be recorded with the working title 'Elvis At Christmas'.
The release of the album is planned in November and some tracks will also be part of the set list of the UK RPO concerts tour.

Did Elvis Record 'Tiger Man' At Sun?: A question that has puzzled Elvis fans through the years is whether he actually recorded the song ‘Tiger Man’ during his years at SUN studios.
The basic question is why did Elvis refer to 'Tiger man' several times in concert as “The second song that I ever recorded, not too many people heard it”?
And if Elvis DID record it, then why hasn’t any reference to it at SUN or proof of its existence been found?
Elvis would first perform ‘Tiger Man’ in concert at his first 1969 Las Vegas International season and would continue playing it through the years – usually in a medley with Mystery Train - until his last performance at Saginaw on May 3 1977. He would sing it over 150 times on stage!
The thought that there might be an acetate or undiscovered tape of Elvis at SUN singing ‘Tiger Man’ is a mouth-watering concept - but is it an unlikely fantasy or strong possibility?
