Norah Jones inspired by Elvis: She has sung 'Are You Lonesome Tonight' in honor of Elvis and now Norah Jones says everyone should visit Elvis Presley's Graceland home at least once in their lives for inspiration.
The 33-year-old musician is a huge fan of the late 'King of Rock 'n' Roll' and going to his mansion in Memphis, Tennessee, and the city itself inspires her songs.
She said: 'I love it in Memphis. It's the most amazing city full of warm people and great food.
'Everybody should visit Elvis' home Graceland once in their lives and while they're at it they should take a trip to the Sun Records museum. It's the record label that launched Elvis, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis.'
Norah - the daughter of legendary Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar - is more inspired by artists from the 50s and 60s than modern musicians.
And the 'Happy Pills' singer often dreams of hosting her idols at a dinner party.
She said: 'I'm really inspired by other music and musicians. My fantasy dinner party would include Willie Nelson, Ray Charles and Billie Holiday. They're just some of the people I look up to. I have about 50 musical icons.'

Priscilla Re-Christens American Queen steamboat: Priscilla Presley smashed a champagne bottle against a steamboat Friday, christening the American Queen as it resumed voyages along the Mississippi River.
“Just floating down the river brings back a lot of nostalgia for the heartland,” said Presley, the former wife of rock ’n’ roll icon Elvis Presley, who lived in Memphis.
The American Queen is the largest steamboat in the world, carrying 436 passengers.
The christening took place just before the boat left its home port of Memphis on a seven-day river cruise to Cincinnati. It is scheduled to take part Wednesday in the Kentucky Derby Festival’s Great Steamboat Race.
Elvis Presley’s Christmas Cruise will take place on the the American Queen from November 30 - December 9, 2012.
Presley thanked the boat’s owners for naming her godmother of the boat. “She’ll be bringing fun to families and friends from all over the world,” she said, adding that the American Queen represents a city her husband loved.

Elvis' granddaughter Riley Keough Rocks Out: It looks like Elvis' granddaughter would be a worthy heir to his rock and roll crown if she ever decided to take up music. For Riley Keough looked stunning as she attended the launch of a new Johnny Ramone's autobiography in Hollywood last night.
The actress looks to have inherited the genes of her handsome grandfather ELVIS as well as from her glamorous Naked Gun star grandmother Priscilla, both aesthetically as well as artistically.
Riley, whose flawless looks helped her net fiance Alex Pettyfer, looked wonderful in a floral green jacket, long blackcurrant shirt and matching top top.
The blonde seemed thrilled to be posing next to her 44-year-old mother, Lisa Marie who went down a more daring route by donning a black leather dress and fishnet tights.
Riley's own star is already on the rise after she starred in the critically praised 2010 film The Runaways.
She starred as alongside Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart in the movie, which was a biography of the iconic 70s all-girl rock band.

"Suspicious Minds" Songwriter Mark James Joins Elvis Week 2012: Elvis fans can now experience a blend of storytelling and music with the man who wrote Elvis' hit singles "Suspicious Minds" and "Always on My Mind" among others. Songwriter Mark James will be appearing at the new Elvis Week event, Elvis Songwriters Showcase, on Saturday, August 11, 2012. Mark James is famous for writing hits for Elvis, B.J. Thomas, and Brenda Lee. The Texas native crossed paths with the king after being signed on as a staff writer for Memphis producer Chips Moman's publishing company. James originally recorded "Suspicious Minds" in 1968 but from a lack of commercial success, handed it over to Elvis who made it a #1 single in 1969.
"Suspicious Minds" became one of the most notable Elvis hits and was ranked #91 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."
Mark James greatest personal success came with another Elvis hit after co-writing "Always on My Mind" with Wayne Carson and Johnny Christopher. James received a Grammy Award for Song of the Year after Willie Nelson's 1982 rendition.

Lisa Marie Talks About Returning to Her Graceland Roots: Lisa Marie Presley talks about finding her own style with her upcoming album "Storm and Grace."
Lisa Marie's new CD returns to her Southern roots with an ominous, swampy vibe which evokes the ease of an impromptu back porch jam session at her childhood home of Graceland. Lisa Marie poses inside the bedroom of her late grandparents, Vernon and Gladys Presley, and is seen hugging her children in between takes. She can also be seen posing in various places on the Graceland property, the place where she grew up with her iconic father.
The Memphis-born Presley reclaims those roots with an American-inspired showcase of her songwriting talent and smoldering alto voice. Produced with elegant restraint by twelve-time Grammy Award-winner T-Bone Burnett, "Storm & Grace" is a marked departure from Presley's previous albums.

| EIN note: For some reason in the article below the INFDaily journalist suggests that, a) Lisa Marie was eight when Elvis died. She was of course nine-years old. b) Lisa Marie states that Gladys (her Grandmother) died aged 42, the same age as Elvis died. This is also not correct. Gladys pretended she was younger than she really was but she died aged 46. Surely Lisa Marie would know this! At her wedding in 1933 Gladys stated that she was 19 years old and younger than Vernon who stated he was 22, which was not the truth. She was 21, and Vernon was only 17 and too young to officially marry. |
Lisa Marie thought she would die at the same age as her father: Lisa Marie Presley, the only child of rock and roll legend, Elvis Presley, opened up to Elle magazine about how it felt for her to reach the age that her father was when he passed away.
Lisa Marie admits that when she turned 42 two years ago, the realization that her father never made it past his 42nd birthday was worrisome for her. The fear was exacerbated by the fact that her grandmother passed away at the age of 42 as well. (see EIN note above)
“It freaked me out,” she told Elle. She continued, “It was my grandmother as well [who died at] the same age, and I was like, ‘What are my odds here?’”
Presley was only eight years old (see EIN note above) when her father died, and the media attention that she received at that time and continuously thereafter was very difficult for her to deal with. As a young woman she struggled with drug use and other behaviors that were deemed questionable by the media, such as her famous marriage to pop legend, Michael Jackson.
However, now a mother of four children – Riley Keough, 22, Benjamin Keough, 19, Finley Aaron Love Lockwood and Harper Vivienne Ann Lockwood – and married to Michael Lockwood, Presley feels as if her troubled past is far behind her.
While everything may look good on paper for Presley, the singer claims that she still finds it hard to be happy, according to Elle.
“It’s hard for me to be happy because I’m always worried about something going awry, or what could happen to screw up,” she says.

One thing she can check off of her list of worries is not being able to see past her 42nd birthday, like her father and grandmother. Since celebrating her 42nd birthday, when she thinks about the fact that her father wasn’t able to meet his grandchildren and son-in-law, Presley admits to the magazine that she does “get emotional.”

Gladys Presley was born 100 years ago - April 25: Elvis' mother Gladys Love Smith was born on April 25 1912 in Pontotoc County, Mississippi to parents Bob and Doll Smith.
It was in 1933 after a whirlwind romance that Gladys Smith and new boyfriend Vernon Presley eloped and were married on June 17. Vernon was only 17 years-old, while Gladys was 21.
Two years later Elvis and stillborn twin Jesse Garon were born.
Vernon said in an interview...
"At that time there was almost nobody poorer than my wife Gladys and me. But we were thrilled and excited when we learned that we were going to be parents. I was only 18 years old, but throughout Gladys’ pregnancy it never occurred to me that I wouldn't be able to take care of her and the baby.
Gladys and I were so proud of Elvis and enjoyed him so much that we immediately wanted more children. But, for reasons no doctor could understand, we had none. While Elvis grew from infant to toddler to lively little boy, we consulted doctors about our failure to have another child. We prayed about it, too. Sadly after a long period struggling with hepatitis at 3.15am, August 14 1958 with Vernon at her side, Gladys Love Presley died at the age of 46.
At her funeral Elvis sobbed, crying out, "Oh God, everything I have is gone. Goodbye, darling, goodbye. I love you so much. You know how much I lived my whole life just for you." |

Eric Bana not to play Elvis in 'Elvis & Nixon': Actor Eric Bana says he's not playing Elvis Presley in 'Elvis & Nixon' the directorial debut of Cary Elwes.
"I'm not doing that. I was attached for a while, but I'm no longer attached," Bana told The Hollywood Reporter. Last October the Aussie heart-throb was lined up last October to play the rock and roll king with Danny Huston taking on the equally iconic and oft-impersonated character of President Nixon. Bana is known for a spot-on Elvis impersonation. Bana was named as an executive producer on the film through his Pick Up Truck Pictures, marking the company's first U.S. production.

Three other Elvis movies are also believed to still be in production. Steve Bing's Fox 2000 project 'Last Train to Memphis' a traditional biopic; 'The Identical' which has a faith-based theme and centers on an Elvis impersonator - plus 'Fame & Fortune' adapted from Sonny West's autobiography.

Tom Jones advised Elvis to stay away from drugs: The 71-year-old crooner and the legendary Elvis Presley became friends whilst performing at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas during the 60s and 70s, and would often chat about the pitfalls of being in the public eye.
But while Elvis was known for his prescription drug use, Tom insists he declined to have anything to do with that side of fame and urged his friend to do the same.
The 'Delilah' singer said: "He picked my brains a bit. I never realised he was doing it, but Elvis would say, 'how do you deal with it, fame?' And I'd say, 'well, I enjoy it'. Then he'd say, 'what drugs do you take in order to enjoy it?' And I'd say, 'well, I don't' - and I think that's maybe helped me."
Despite being surrounded by cocaine and marijuana at celebrity-packed parties, Jones insists he was never tempted to dabble.
He told the paper, "It has never interested me. Cocaine, for instance - going to a party and seeing there's a bloody big mound on the table. Christ, I don't get anything from it.
"I like restaurants, I like pubs. I like to be standing with the fellas by the bar, a social thing that you don't get from drugs. I still like a good pint of British ale."

Lisa Marie Presley 'Storm & Grace' New CD Review: Lisa Marie Presley was 35 when her first album was released, 2003's To Whom It May Concern. Her debut's success was followed two years later with Now What. Again, Presley impressed critics and music buyers alike for her mature and earthy material. However, Presley let it be known she felt she was being pulled in directions she didn't want to go. She needed time and inspiration to restart her creative juices. Then announcements for her forthcoming Storm & Grace suggested her 2012 return would be a major departure for Presley. As it turns out, these claims are largely true. Her third album is not as hard-charging as her previous releases, and it is far more "organic," to use Presley's own description.
But Storm & Grace isn't just a stripped-down "roots" album, with players simply laying down good grooves behind a singer. Thanks immeasurably to producer T Bone Burnett, the musical settings maintain a unified moody tone throughout the 11 songs. The set is full of subdued echo, haunting guitar lines, and the ambiance of a live session trying to capture both the cerebral and emotional elements in each song. Presley's lyrics balance both the dark and the hopeful, her painful trials and hard-won triumphs, a few hellos and many goodbyes. In other words, storm and grace

Storm & Grace is soulful on several levels -the style of the vocals, Burnett's musical arrangements, and the depth of the material. While every song deals with surviving pain of one kind or another, the tone is typically one of reconciliation, even if all the victories aren't easily won. For example, "Forgiving," co-written with Steve Booker, asks for the secrets of forgiveness as that's hard to do. But these very secrets are scattered throughout the songs in which Presley waves goodbye to the past, which is full of unworthy lovers and glaring flaws within herself.
So Storm & Grace isn't a disc to pep up your party, but it is one worth repeated listening. If it's surprising, that's probably due to comparisons with her two previous releases and the fact that the attempt here was far more artistic than commercial. Lisa Marie has her own blues to sing and she delivers them with style and grace. This is one Presley very much in the building.

The Elvis Files Vol.5 & New Elvis Files magazine!: Elvis Files producer Erik Lorentzen today announced the news that there will be an Elvis Files magazine. The Elvis Files Magazine first issue will be published in September, with lots of great photos and articles. There will be 4 issues a year.
Lorentzen says the reason for the magazine is that he has bought some new huge photo collections which he would like to share it with other fans. The magazine will also include photos and articles that haven't been used in the book series. |
Here is also the new poster for 'Elvis Files Vol.5' which is in the printers now, with 580 pages and more than 1600 photos it is really looking good.

'Elvis In Ottawa' Spotlight & Elvis Interview: Elvis performed in Ottawa, Canada on April 3rd 1957, 55 years ago this month. Janet Fulton was only 13 years-old when she attended Elvis' concert and one of the highlights of her life was not only meeting Elvis but also being kissed by him.
Back in November 2011 EIN interviewed Janet Fulton about the experience of meeting Elvis and recently she also provided us with this interesting article on 'Elvis In Ottawa' - 55 years ago this month.
Following the spotlight is Ottawa's radio CKOY Mac Lipson's interview with Elvis on the same day.
"I have never thought I had a good voice. I just enjoy what I'm doing and I put every part of my heart, soul and body into it. But I guess one of the reasons the people have liked it is because it was a little something different" - Elvis Presley, Ottawa 1957.

Graceland Gates Installed 55 years ago: While Elvis was touring Canada (as noted above) the new front gates were installed at Graceland. With an electoric gate opener as an added addition the cost was $1,700. The gates were designed by Abe Saucer and ordered from the Tennessee Fabricating Company.
The original gates painted were a red, iron colour but have been repaired many times and for a while painted white. There was a major repair when in March 1974 a tour bus accidenitly crashed into the gates.

Elvis Presley duets album Back On?!?: At Friday’s Tisch School of the Art's Gala, music mogul and NYU alum Clive Davis told us that while he hasn’t had a chance to see Tupac’s hologram perform at Coachella, he is "in the midst" of an afterlife-inspired project of his own: an Elvis Presley duets album. Apparently Priscilla Presley brought him the idea and it “struck a responsive chord” with him.
“I immediately thought, My God, to go through his repertoire and not to be a slave to his tracks but to have some freedom to perhaps change some tracks as we see fit. Could Lady Gaga do 'Viva Las Vegas' with Elvis? You know, different ideas. We all have to explore what’s fresh and new, even if it explores the departed.” Maybe Gaga could even perform with Elvis' hologram. “Elvis would be great,” Davis agreed. Though, on second thought, perhaps Elvis should perform with Jo Calderone (Lady Gaga's fictional male alter-ego) and we can see who does Elvis better.

Nixon aide Bud Krogh and Jerry Schilling added to Elvis Week Insiders Conference: Elvis Insiders will have the opportunity to hear first-hand accounts of the day the King of Rock 'n' Roll sat down with an American President during Elvis Week 2012. Elvis' lifelong friend Jerry Schilling and President Nixon's former aide Egil "Bud" Krogh will both take part in the official Elvis Insiders Conference on Monday, August 13, 2012, to discuss when Elvis met Nixon.
Jerry Schilling was with Elvis the day he met President Nixon and he also worked with Elvis throughout his career. Former Nixon aide, Egil "Bud" Krogh arranged the meeting and took the official notes for the one and only time Elvis sat down with an American president in the Oval Office. Krogh also authored the 1994 book "The Day Elvis Met Nixon."
On December 21, 1970, when Elvis approached the White House, it was "Bud" Krogh who was convinced of Elvis' sincerity and arranged the meeting

Both men witnessed history in the making and can give detailed accounts of the conversations between Elvis and President Nixon. Sonny West doing much better!: Good news from Sandi Pichon, Sonny West is doing MUCH better after his operation. She reports today that if Sonny continues to improve they will move him from ICU to a room tomorrow! Sonny came through the surgery fine after they ended up doing 4 bypasses. He is once again laughing and talking.

Remembering Elvis' Birthday Celebration on 'American Bandstand': With Dick Clark's recent death, AP journalist Linda Deutsch recalls being 15-years old and determined to keep her hero from being forgotten after entering the Army in the height of his fame. The New Jersey native was the president of an Elvis Presley Fan Club and started a petition to ask "American Bandstand" to dedicate the entire 90-minute program to Elvis' music on his 24th birthday.
A photo taken over half a century ago paints the picture of an Elvis fan, who pulled out all stops to keep Elvis' music and image fresh while he served in the U.S. army.

deliver it to Dick Clark in person. Once they arrived, a crowd of Elvis fans greeted them outside the studio and Clark's staff ushered them inside.
Dick Clark rolled out the 16-foot long petition for his audience to see and the next day he announced on-air he had spoken with Colonel Tom Parker to arrange an entire show of Elvis music in honor of his birthday.
On January 8, 1959, Dick Clark and "American Bandstand" dedicated the entire show to Elvis. Elvis sent a telegram to Dick Clark thanking him for the birthday wishes and had Colonel Tom Parker deliver a birthday cake for the staff to enjoy. He also asked that Dick Clark thank his fans for their loyalty.

Dick Clark dies at 82; The music impresario Dick Clark whose 'American Bandstand' show helped introduced America to rock 'n' roll died Wednesday at 82-years-old. He left behind a legacy of over 50 years in American popular entertainment. While in recent years he was perhaps best known for counting down to midnight on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve—not to mention the many other specials, award ceremonies, and game shows he hosted—Clark first became a household name with American Bandstand, for which he took the mic as host in 1956.
With the exception of Elvis Presley, Clark was considered by many to be the person most responsible for the bonfire spread of rock 'n' roll across the country in the late 1950s. It made Clark a household name and gave him the foundation for a shrewdly pursued broadcasting career that made him wealthy, powerful and present in American television for half a century. |

In his interview with Elvis Presley on the first day that "American Bandstand" went national, Mr. Clark could have been a stand-in for Pat Boone, the clean-cut white-bucks-wearing pop star who was the antithesis of the gyrating, wet-lipped Elvis with his pompadour and bedroom eyes.
Over the 34 years that Clark hosted the show, he shared the stage with just about every major movement in popular music including Chuck Berry, Bill Haley and the Comets, James Brown, Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers who all made their national television debuts on "Bandstand."
Neither Elvis nor The Beatles ever appeared on his show. However Elvis wasn’t slighting Clark by not appearing as by the time Bandstand went national in mid-1957, Elvis had already abandoned TV entirely. Colonel Parker reasoned that if Elvis’ fans could see him for free on TV, they were less likely to buy tickets to his movies.
Although he kept Elvis off Bandstand, the Colonel recognized Clark’s ability to communicate with teenagers and Dick Clark phoned Elvis several times when he was in Germany away from his US fans. In 1959 Clark noted about Elvis and teenagers, "There is nothing basically bad or wrong about our teen-agers today. They are better citizens than past generations for they are better educated in school and at home. They have broader tastes. They have ideals and they have values."

When parents complained Dick Clark offered a respected adult voice in support of Elvis. "He’s a great talent. Whether you call it rock and roll or rhythm and blues or country music, his style is authentic. He has never faked his music. Elvis' music is honest. Many adults couldn’t see it. The younger generation, whose tastes were not prejudiced, accepted Presley’s singing for its freshness and exuberance. But this is not the secret. It’s something more than talent that Elvis has. Some people call it magic. I call it girl-appeal."

Elvis Co-Star Dolores Hart Wins Life Achievement Award; It was announced yesterday that Mother Dolores Hart who was recently profiled in the Academy Award-nominated HBO documentary "God is the Bigger Elvis" – will receive the 2012 Christopher Life Achievement Award during its 63rd annual Christopher Awards ceremony on Thursday, May 24th.
As part of the annual Christopher Awards which recognize books, films and TV/Cable programs that "affirm the highest values of the human spirit," the organization also presents special Awards to worthy individuals and achievements, one of which is the Life Achievement Award.
During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Dolores Hart enjoyed a successful acting career that led her to co-star in movies with Robert Wagner, Anthony Quinn, and Elvis Presley. She became the first actress to kiss Elvis in a movie, and portrayed St. Clare in the film "Francis of Assisi." Though she enjoyed her time and work in Hollywood, Hart felt an even stronger spiritual call from God that led her to give up the acting life to become a cloistered Benedictine nun at the Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem, Conn.
Mother Dolores still remains an active member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, giving her a vote to help determine each year’s Oscar winners. She watches the movies on screener DVDs and invites her fellow nuns to see the good ones.

Is an Elvis Hologram show next?: Last weekend Tupac Shakur played the Coachella Valley Music (shown below) even though he died in 1996. A hologram of the rapper appeared on stage and performed two songs alongside his still-living contemporaries Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. At the end of the act, hologram Tupac exploded into an impressive light display.
The performance was the result of a four-month collaboration between Dr. Dre’s production company and two hologram-imaging companies.
Previously a digital Frank Sinatra sang at Simon Cowell’s 50th birthday party in 2009 and a digital Black Eyed Peas also performed at a French awards show in 2011 costing several hundred thousand dollars. The extra work built into this recent project likely means that Tupac cost a bit more. Still, that’s much less than the well-over $1 million that a living, breathing festival headliner would have demanded from concert promoters.
This concept has been thought about by the Elvis estate and of course there is plenty of genuine Elvis footage that can be used to create authentic 3D performances.
Back in 2007 a 3D image of Elvis was used on American Idol but not with a hologram (which needs near darkness to work) but instead using digital merging rotoscoping, which traced Presley from the original footage, superimposing Elvis over the original stand-in.
So how long will it be before Elvis Presley will be performing the 'Elvis In Concert' shows in 3D?

'Elvis 69/Change of Habit' JAT trailer: Competing with several other upcoming Elvis books that feature 1969, Joe Tunzi is working his new book, 'Elvis 69: Featuring the Universal Film Change of Habit'. The book with 160 pictures concentrates on 1969, the year of the King's fabulous return to live shows in Las Vegas, but also the year when the movie with the same title was released. It was his 31st movie, featuring the great Mary Tyler Moore.

“All The King’s Women” written by multiple award winning playwright Luigi Jannuzzi and directed by Missy Barnes, associate professor of Theatre Arts at Catawba College, comprises eight vig-nettes tracking changing times during the life of Elvis Presley, and how those times were shaped by the man himself. For those of you with Suspicious Minds: it is Fever pitch, family friendly, fast and funny.

One Tupelo Saleswoman – Bethany Sinnott — (yes, the Shakespearean authority Dr. Sinnott — who knew?) plays a 1940s Mississippi sales lady who sells Elvis his first guitar when the future gyrator and his Mother pop in to her store to choose Elvis’ 11th birthday gift. Bethany commands a bare stage, but you’d swear there’s a store full of people interrupting her monologue: “.…Asbestos Insulation Sir? Aisle 4.” With apologies to you know who: Bethany is the soul of wit.
The Censor And The King — Tammie Casper and Claudia Galup epitomize a new world of 1950s women in the workplace as their characters discuss how the censors will scrutinize pelvic movement, before Elvis’ first appearance on the Steve Allen Show. Gina Christoffersen plays The Colonel’s secretary. The questions and precautions of the day, as well as hilariously portrayed, seem incredible now.
3 A.M. In The Garden With A God — Kat Campagna plays a ’60s housewife whose few minutes of daily independence generally fall in the middle of the night when she takes a trip to the local supermarket to buy peanut butter and bananas. Kat’s “highlight of my life” recital of her collision with Elvis in the produce section is a show stopper. Your sides will be All Shook Up.
When Nixon Met Elvis — Mary Ann McCubbin, Celsa de Jesus, and Lori Van Wallendael are three 1970 White House secretaries fawning over a visitor at the White House gate. The three do a good job bouncing off one another: transitioning through denial, shock and eventual weak kneed contact with the aspiring federal agent.
A 15-minute intermission is followed by Warhol Explains Art To Elvis — Claudia Galup and Robin Hendrick, embracing their full flower power regalia, make plans to entice Elvis to endorse Warhol’s Elvis Pop Art Exhibition. Jeannie Lefler questions their approach.
Pink Cadillacs and God – Showroom manager Bob Paolino struggles to determine which of his super saleswomen: Sharon Doherty or Lori Van Wallendael, will sell Elvis the king’s next and 100th Cadillac. The three actors do an excellent job of hitting the funny lines and the scene also does more than any other in the show to depict the dichotomy of Elvis’ public persona and his struggle to earn respect from the establishment.
One Private Guard — Rodney Lippard is a security guard inside Graceland, who knew and worked for Presley before the king’s death. Reflections on the compassion and generosity of Elvis Presley are poignantly portrayed by Lippard.
Leaving Graceland – It is 2012 and a young woman: Willow Catherine, is quitting the souvenir shop at Graceland. Her obsessed Elvis Impersonator boyfriend Chris Speer cannot believe she’s leaving and inept sales clerk Pat Proctor just never thinks it will happen. The three play off each other well. Graceland is full of tourist trinkets and the world is moving on.
During scene changes, Bob Paolino has a recurring role as the radio announcer, relating sound-bites of American society throughout the decades, recalling the cause and effect of many aspects of the mid-20th century.
So it’s not just an Elvis Fan Club night. But you should spend One Night watching All The King’s Women before we go our Separate Ways. Don’t delay, It’s Now or Never, the show runs only through Saturday, avoid Crying In The Chapel on Sunday. Shake Rattle and Roll Until It’s Time For You To Go… Too Much?

| UT Opera Theatre to Present Elvis-Inspired ‘Marriage of Figaro’: The University of Tennessee Opera Theatre this month will present a modern-day adaptation of Mozart’s classic comedy, The Marriage of Figaro, where Elvis is star and pop culture takes center stage.The spring opera will debut Friday through Sunday, April 20 to 22, at the Carousel Theatre, 1714 Andy Holt Avenue.
It is under the direction of James Marvel, Opera Theatre director, and conducted by Kevin Class, Opera Theatre music director.
Figaro will be an interactive play where audience members may become part of the show and may be invited to dance on stage. Friday and Saturday nights will include pre-show performances by the Rockabilly-Ska band Demon Waffle. |

“If you thought you couldn’t enjoy opera, this evening will change your mind forever,” Marvel said. “People who should attend this production include those who love Mozart, opera, Figaro, Elvis, swing dancing, rock and roll, pop culture, classical music, living, laughing, loving, and comedy.”
Marvel decided to interpret Figaro as Mozart’s opera about Elvis because, he said, “both personas are immensely likable and musical.
“Both are good dancers and play the guitar,” he said. “Both have amazing hair. Ultimately, Figaro is the barber, and barbers are all about the hair.”
Marvel’s adaptation of Figaro will also feature representations of former First Lady Jackie Onassis and Liberace, a flamboyant American pianist and vocalist.
Show times are 8:00 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday.

OK, you tell yourself: Another Elvis book. Ho hum. But what a pleasant surprise. As it turns out “Graceland Express” is a fast-paced tale of Vangie who works at K mart and is trapped in a life which revolves around a mother who is convinced that Gypsies are invading her home. Author is St. Augustine resident Marie Vernon, a former feature writer, columnist and reviewer for the Baltimore Sun.
Central character of “Graceland Express” is Vangie, a member of the Elvis 4-Ever Fan Club, a group which is planning a trip to Graceland to mark the 10th anniversary of Elvis’s death. Vangie wants desperately to go, but when the Gypsies again become the focus of Vangie’s mother’s life, it looks like the Elvis bus will be leaving Baltimore without Vangie.
But Vangie is a lot more than just an Elvis fan. She is a caring young woman who is devoted to hospitalized children and performs good works in the name of the Elvis 4-Ever Fan Club for the children in a Baltimore hospital. Her devotion and contributions catch the attention of the
Baltimore newspaper, and Vangie is thrust into the spotlight.Humor makes this book a fun read — and you find yourself laughing out loud on numerous occasions, especially visualizing the burly truck driver who favors Tom Selleck in looks and is devoted to his demanding feline Konstanze. Then there’s Vangie’s brother, Floyd O’Toole, who is always positive that the next big score will allow him to flee the country and live in luxury in a tropical paradise with the current woman of his dreams.

Memphis Horns' Andrew Love Dies: Wayne Jackson has sent EIN this very sad message >>. The Passing of Andrew Love April 12, 2012. What can I say about my best friend, Andrew Love? He was the best man I knew. He was a great husband and father. He was a fabulous musician, and he left behind for us a wealth of recorded saxophone so we can continue to be amazed by him. How fortuitous of God to have put the two of us together. The first time I heard Andrew play was at the Manhattan Club with the Willie Mitchell band. I knew we would be perfect together. He had a big tone, and I had a big tone. And I knew that they would blend in the the most natural, beautiful way. We loved to laugh together. We laughed and traveled all over the world together making records with artists of all genres. Andrew and I knew we were blessed beyond most people. We got to do what we loved everyday and share our unique gifts. It all paid off this year with The Memphis Horns receiving the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

These Elvis boots were made for walking: We wonder if yellow wiggle Greg Page has put his feet in these brown leather boots and we think it is highly likely. The boots were worn by Elvis Presley during his 1968 Comeback special and are just one of many Elvis items owned by Page
You may not be able to slip your feet into the boots but if you are in Australia you certainly will be able to look closely at them. Page has given the go-ahead for part of his multi-million dollar Elvis Presley collection to tour and Albury is on the venue list (see below).
Page's touring collection comprises five display cabinets full of items either owned by the King or have a strong connection to him. Items include clothes, jewellery, a movie script, keys and even a wash cloth Elvis used on stage.
Exhibition promoter David Johnstone said that Elvis fans have been known to "react" on seeing items once owned by Elvis.
"I've seen grown men crying and I say 'Are you OK?' and they say 'This is the closest I'll ever get to Elvis Presley!'".
Elvis Presley's treasures can be seen at the Albury Entertainment Centre, New South Wales, this weekend. Friday April 13th and Saturday April 14th

Elvis Presley in yet another new film?: Yet another Elvis movie being flagged in the pres. The King of Rock ‘n Roll is back and he’s teaming with Richard Nixon, a South Florida musician and a conspiracy theory to rock the U.S. government. This time the public will vote on whether this tale gets to the silver screen.
"Elvis Came Back to Manage Me" is a screenplay written by Hallandale Beach writer, Jay Schorr. But what makes this movie different than other political thrillers is that voters are being asked to lobby Hollywood producers to green light the project. "Usually the producers in Hollywood decide which films get made but this is the first time someone’s trying to vest that decision with the movie-going public."
Singletary says there’s no better way to test market a potential movie concept than to put it out there before the public. "They buy the tickets and know what they want to see."
"Elvis Came Back to Manage Me" is based on the story of Charlie Blake, a struggling South Florida country musician. One night, while performing at a Fort Lauderdale Moose Lodge, Blake sees an apparition of Elvis Presley. Elvis tells Charlie he's come back to manage him and propel him to stardom. In exchange, Elvis asks that Charlie assist him in his quest to track down those responsible for the King’s premature demise.
But Elvis’ interest in Charlie goes far beyond any conspiratorial unraveling. It is soon revealed that Charlie is the King’s illegitimate son. What follows is nothing short of a cosmic series of events with profound repercussions for father, son and the fabric of American society. |

"The movie is destined to become a cult classic," said Schorr.
Schorr said the public will be able to read his script online, then if they like it, click on a thumbs-up link to major movie studio executives. The public also will get to participate in casting the movie.
"We’ve already begun to explore talent attachments," Schorr said. "People will be able to vote on who they want to star in the movie. We’ve already put out feelers to Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy and John Travolta."
The title track, Elvis Came Back to Manage Me, will be performed by a major country music star.

Lisa Marie Interview in May Edition of Elle Magazine: A rare interview with Lisa Marie Presley in the May edition of Elle magazine tells all about her transformation from heir to the King of Rock 'n' Roll to finding her own place in the world and the upcoming release of her new album, "Storm and Grace."
Elle magazine music correspondent, Liza Ghorbani, sat down with Presley at her Medieval style estate outside of London, England. Lisa Marie talked about growing up the child of a music icon, her new album, and how motherhood has softened her once bad-girl image.
"I think people think I'm harder and more arrogant and cocky than I am because I know how to put on a front, but it's nothing like who I am inside. To be honest, I'm really overly, scarily sensitive," said Lisa Marie.
Lisa Marie described her new album as no longer "pissed off and bitter" but "exposing her vulnerability" and "laying her soul bare with a 'this is me, take it or leave it' attitude."
"Her songwriting is brave and real. She's saying something," said Oscar-winning producer T Bone Burnett, who helped produce her

latest album. "I think it helps Lisa Marie to have that genetic makeup, because there wasn't a better singer in the last century than Elvis Presley. Her dad had extraordinary taste and I think she got that from him."
Both Lisa Marie and Burnett tell Elle magazine the album is something Elvis would have been proud of and both are pleased to have achieved that goal.

'The Original Elvis Tribute’ 2012 Review: Elvis Today's Thomas Melin reviewed the Opening Night show of the recent 'The Original Elvis Tribute’ European Tour.
The opening show in Vara, Sweden, as performed by ‘The Original Elvis Tribute 2012’, is without question the best Elvis tribute show I've ever attended. No doubt this has a lot to do with the fact that it features musicians and singers who once worked with Elvis, such as Bobby Wood on keyboard, bass player Duke Bardwell, backing vocalists Mary and Ginger Holladay, and Jerome 'Stump' Monroe on drums.
Another factor working in the show's favor is hard working leadsinger Robert Washington, who sounds remarkably close to Elvis. Also, I was amazed by the talented rock & roll guitarist Carl Bradychok, who is only 21 years old. And last but not the least the mix of songs included in the show works really well, combining

famous hits like “Jailhouse Rock” and “Hound Dog” with lesser known songs such as “Just Pretend” and “Walk A Mile In My Shoes.”
The sold out show kicked off with a couple of classics from the 50's, among them “Heartbreak Hotel,” and “Love Me.” From the start it was obvious that the musicians enjoyed themselves. Their smiles, laughs and good humored banter were contagious, and I was soon clapping my hands and stomping my feet, just like the rest of the audience.
I noticed that Ginger and Mary Holladay seemed to have a really great time on the stage. They added a lot to the show, not only their beautiful voices, but energy and joy as well. One of the highlights was Ginger Holiday telling the audience that she got to sing a duet with Elvis in the studio (“I was 19 and they picked me!”) and then performing that duet, “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” together with Robert Washington. The Holladays singing “Sweet Inspiration” as a tribute to the Sweet Inspirations was a special

moment, too. One of the things I like with ‘The Original Elvis Tribute’ concept is the idea to let the original musicians perform songs as well, and Duke Bardwell's version of “Peace In The Valley” was awesome. I'm sure Elvis would've approved. Likewise, it was great listening to Bobby Wood singing “If I'm A Fool (For Loing You),” a song he originally recorded in 1964. Before singing it, he told us it was a favorite of Elvis' father Vernon, whom he met during the famous 1969 sessions at the American Sound Studio in Memphis, when Elvis did his version of the song.
Another highlight was a driving version of “For The Heart.” What a shame that Elvis never did this one live! And just like Arjan Deelen pointed out in an interview before the show, it was incredible to hear “Suspicious Minds” with the vocal parts sounding exactly like they did when the Holladay Sisters sang them over 40 years ago. No wonder this performance got a standing ovation.
The show then ended with two encore songs, “Unchained Melody” followed by “Burning Love.” By this time the audience was on their feet again, wildly clapping their hands. So ended the first show of ‘The Original Elvis Tribute 2012’ tour and I found myself wishing I could catch the rest of them as well. It was that good.

Bernard Lansky's Alzheimer Struggle: Elvis Presley was merely the most famous patron of Lanksy Brothers, founded by Bernard and his brother, Guy Lansky, in 1946. Others were Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Isaac Hayes, B.B. King, Rufus Thomas and Otis Redding.
Bernard Lanksy worked seven days a week even into his 80s at Lansky Brothers store, which began under another name as a tie store in 1981. But an era ended about two years ago when Alzheimer's left him unable to do what he lived to do, serve his customers. A quiet family dinner marked his 85th birthday on March 10.
"We miss having him here," said Hal Lansky, who worked with his father for almost 50 years. "We were a great team."
Lansky's was at ground zero of a cultural revolution that began with rock and roll.

In 1952, Beale Street was jumping with blues clubs, bars, gambling dens and cool cats who liked to parade in loud suits and snazzy shoes. Lansky Brothers menswear at 126 Beale was the place to get them, not just for Memphis but for much of the Mid-South.Patrons were almost all black, except for the occasional hipster wannabe like Elvis, then 17, whom Lansky would see pressing his nose to the glass until Lansky finally went out to meet him. Lansky would become a key player in creating a distinctive style for a rising supernova.
While other young rebels were wearing T-shirts and jeans, Elvis, with Lansky's help, blazed forth in silk suits, blousy shirts and voluminous trousers with peg-leg pants that only accentuated his flying legs and rotating pelvis. He wore bright-colored shirts, especially pink and black (when men didn't wear pink) and lime-and-black combinations. His shoes were a novel black-and-white spectator look, or white bucks or patent ankle boots.
Lansky helped create all the outfits Elvis wore to perform on the "Louisiana Hayride" shows that helped launch him, including a bubble-gum pink suit. He put Elvis in the big plaid jacket and black pants that stood out even on black-and-white TV for his breakthrough performance on "The Ed Sullivan Show."
At the start, Lansky let the penniless Elvis buy on credit. A shrewd businessman, he new that a hot young performer would be a walking billboard for Lansky fashions.

Michael Jarrett comments on 'Elvis In Concert' and the TCB Band: Michael Jarrett, Elvis composer/musician ('I'm Leaving') has written to EIN commenting about the possible removal of the TCB Band from the 'Elvis In Concert' Event.
Michael Jarrett.. Like many others, I'm very disappointed to hear EPE wants to replace the TCB band. As you know, it will change the total uniqueness of the show .. that special connection with the audience to be able to witness the "kickass band" that backed the King those many years on stage right before their eyes; both in person and on screen at the same time and; have both the past and present together ... what a great concept.
When I play music with other musicians that also have had that "special connection" with Elvis, it brings me such joy, as it takes me full circle back to my youth when I first heard his music and was mesmerized by it.

Sometimes when I'm sitting there at the keyboard playing during an Elvis Tribute concert and looking out at the audience and watching them react with such joy; I realize that they too are feeling what I'm feeling and we're collectively sharing a very unique "moment in time"; recapturing something very meaning full and special to all of us.. It's an awesome experience ..
In turn these great TCB musicians still want to honor the man that changed their lives in so many ways and to continue to play those great classic songs that the King made legendary ..
For me, that's the total experience of this show.
Let's hope EPE gets an "earful from the fans" and they change their mind.

Did Madonna manipulate the charts?: She's already broken Elvis Presley's record in the UK with her new #1 album MDNA, and now Madonna has achieved similar success in the U.S.
The 53-year-old queen of pop's album MDNA sold an impressive 359,000 units, making it her eighth album to top the Billboard 200 albums chart. MDNA now is the highest selling debut of 2012 so far.
However a new report suggests that the Material Girl resorted to some trickery in a bid to secure a number one spot on the Billboard charts, as her album wasn't sold the typical way.
Her label Interscope and Ticketmaster combined her latest album with ticket sales to her upcoming concert tour. For every ticket that was sold to one of her shows buyers also received a copy of MDNA. It isn't yet known how many album sales were directly attributed to concert ticket purchases.
In the US she needs two more number ones to overtake Barbara Streisand who currently holds the record with nine number one albums.
With her 12th chart topping release, she beats Elvis Presley's former record of 11 in the UK album charts.

Tupelo Airport board to hear name change request: After the disappointing recent rejection from Memphis Airport towards a petitioned name change, now Tupelo Regional Airport board will hear a proposal Tuesday night to change its name.
Airport Executive Director Josh Abramson says a request was made to allow the Elvis Presley Fan Club to make a presentation at the April 10 meeting.
Abramson says the name changes has been discussed for years and airport officials did consider it in the past.
He says Elvis Presley Enterprises stated in the past they would not license the name to the airport.

Elvis worked around system: In your April 2 issue, there was an article about the Elvis Presley concerts at Stokely Athletic Center in 1972. The remarks included on how bad the sound was for the afternoon concert. As is often the case, there is a story behind that.
I was manager of University Concerts, which produced the two shows. About an hour before the afternoon show, an electrical accident in Stokely blew out the expensive sound equipment in place for the event. Nothing of that quality was available in Knoxville, so the concert went on with what was the basic Stokely sound system (never very good at best) with what help could be found.
When we told Elvis of the situation, he said, "Tell me what you've got to work with, and I'll give them the best show that I can." Given what he had to work with, I thought he did an admirable job. The show was previously released in a substandard quality using an unknown generation copy of the tape released by the Tiger label way back in 1991. Here we present the show directly from a first generation copy of a privately-recorded 60-minute cassette. The sound was painstakingly restored for your listening pleasure. The improvement is incredible, the sound quality here is incredible good, considering it was taped from the audience. Elvis’ voice is loud and clear, the band sounds very powerful in very good balanced mix with some great James Burton’ guitar solos, the audience is never too intrusive giving instead the real feeling of the concert.
Like its predecessors, this new release will be presented in a beautiful four panel digipack with a collection of photos taken during the actual show. As bonus the first 500 copies will come with a poster 24x12 cm. The recording excellent quality and the superb show give to Wild Tiger in Concert the status of UNIQUE. Don’t miss it!!!!

Elvis fans to celebrate 40th anniversary of “Aloha from Hawaii” worldwide concert: Memphis-based Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc. this week announced a vacation package to Hawaii tied to the 40th anniversary of his Aloha From Hawaii concert held on Jan. 14, 1973 in Honolulu.
The package, Jan. 10-15, 2013, will feature concerts, panel discussions and tours of Elvis-related locations on Oahu, such as Diamond Head and Hanauma Bay, which were featured prominently as the backdrops in the films Blue Hawaii and Paradise, Hawaiian Style.
The Aloha From Hawaii concert was broadcast live via satellite from the Honolulu International Center — now the Neal Blaisdell Center. It was the first musical event to be broadcast worldwide by satellite.

The concert served as a fundraiser for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund. Lee, a Hawaii composer and entertainer who died of throat cancer in 1966, was the composer of the song “I’ll Remember You,” which was recorded by Elvis. Aloha From Hawaii featured that song along with several older hits and tunes from the 1960s and ‘70s. The lineup ranged from “Blue Suede Shoes” to “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and the Beatles’ “Something.”
According to a press release issued by Elvis Presley Enterprises, the vacation package dubbed Elvis Presley’s Aloha from Hawaii, the 40th Anniversary Celebration, includes a five-night stay at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Wakiki Resort.
Here are some of the celebration’s highlights:
• Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest (hosted by Legends in Concert Waikiki) — 8 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 12, 2013 at the Royal Hawaiian Theater in The Royal Hawaiian Center, just a few blocks from the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Legends in Concert Waikiki is also presenting an Elvis tribute show spotlighting top-notch tribute artists on Fri., Jan. 11 and Sun., Jan 13, at 8:15 p.m.
• Aloha From Hawaii screening — Mon., Jan. 14 (evening) at Neal Blaisdell Center. Elvis fans will gather in the venue where four decades ago Elvis took the stage for his famous concert. The screening of the Aloha from Hawaii show will feature re-mastered video on giant, multiple screens. Included will be rare footage and audio, according to Elvis Presley Enterprises.
The celebration’s concerts will feature musicians who performed with Elvis at the Aloha From Hawaii show and other Elvis fan favorites, according to Elvis Presley Enterprises. Among the guests slated for Elvis-related panel discussions are Jerry Hopkins, author of Elvis in Hawaii and Jan Shepard, Elvis’ co-star in King Creole and Paradise, Hawaiian Style.

Elvis' legacy rocks on: "Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building.” Even though it’s been 35 years since Elvis left for good, his legacy rocks on. Elvis mania is unabated, highlighted by many “tribute artist” shows and events.

“There are even more ways than ever for fans, many of whom were not yet born when Elvis passed away, to celebrate their love for the undisputed King of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” said Scott Williams of Elvis Presley Enterprises.
One of three new exhibits at Graceland is “Elvis on Tour,” marking the 40th anniversary of the documentary of the same name. There’s also “Elvis … Through His Daughter’s Eyes,” highlighting the relationship between Elvis and his only child.
The largest exhibit is “Icon: The Influence of Elvis Presley,” featuring artifacts from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. “The exhibit will celebrate Elvis’ status as a music pioneer and icon that paved the way and influenced many of today’s artists and notable celebrities,” Williams said.
Licensed Elvis festivals take place all over the world: They happen in Elvis’ birthplace in Tupelo, Miss. to Stage West Hotel in Mississauga, the Collingwood summer event, as well as in the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia.
Graceland is open year-round for tours and includes Elvis’ automobile and airplane collections and his family gravesite in the Meditation Garden. Visitors see the quirky “jungle” den, a true retro “man cave” where he hung out with his buddies, the living and music rooms, Elvis' parents' bedroom, dining room, kitchen, and TV and pool rooms. Shake, rattle and roll: Some 50 tribute artists will groove for a weekend of fun at the Toronto Elvis Festival at Stage West Theatre Restaurant ( 5400 Dixie Rd.) in Mississauga.
The event on April 21 and 22 is organized by Nevin Grant, formerly of Oldies 1150 Radio in Hamilton, and his wife Heather, both of whom have been Elvis festival judges. Elvis fests continue to attract “loyal fan gatherings” and Stage West is an ideal setting with its Las Vegas-style dinner-theatre, Nevin said. A pre-fest event on April 20 at 6 p.m. is a Memphis-style barbecue buffet at the hotel’s Haida Garden Cafe followed from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. with an open mic session with tribute artists.
Menu items include southern rub smoked brisket, Graceland chicken and dumpling stew, smoked bourbon gumbo, crab cakes and pulled pork with baked beans.
The competition runs on April 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes a luncheon buffet. That night, from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., is a Superstar Tribute Show and dinner featuring Elvis Festival Grand Champion Mark Anthony, Tim E. Hendry as “Vegas Elvis” and Bruce Herron as “Leathers Elvis.”
There will be tribute artists recreating performances by Garth Brooks, Michael Buble, John Denver, Connie Francis, Elton John and Martina McBride. A Gospel Breakfast opens the festival on April 22 followed by competitions from 11a.m. to 4 p.m. and the finals to name the winner to advance to the “Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest” in Memphis.

Elvis sightings continue: Tribute artists will strut their stuff on stage, at street parties and during an old-car parade through town at the Collingwood Elvis Festival from July 26 to 29.

2-year fight over “Elvis Bus” yet to be resolved: A 2-year-old feud over who owns the so-called Elvis Bus continues in a Mississippi court. It may be a while longer before the issue is settled.
The North Mississippi Daily Journal reports Lee County Chancellor Talmadge Littlejohn postponed a hearing this week into a challenge to the bus' title, presently held by Bill Kinard of Tupelo.
Kinard said he never wanted to sell the bus and that Tupelo bus rehabber Larry Michael stole it when he moved it to Nashville. Michael claims Kinard owes him $134,000 for paying the bus' promissory note and for its retrieval from Washington State in early 2009. He also wants to be paid for certain "restoration" of the vehicle. |

On Wednesday, Michael's attorneys agreed to delay the hearing.
John Spelling at busforsale.com in Nashville said when the March 31 sale deadline passed, Larry Michael's bid was the only offer for the 40-foot long, 8-foot wide 1976 vehicle. Before court Wednesday, Kinard backed off a bit from saying the King actually owned the bus, saying instead that Elvis gave its purchase money to music colleague J.D. Sumner to tour with his Stamps Quartet. Kinard said he wants to keep the bus and take it on tour to make a living away from his Legacy Hall of Fame museum in Tupelo.
In court documents, Michael denies Kinard's allegations and countersued for the money he claims he's owed. On Dec. 12, all sides apparently agreed to a court-filed compromise to put the bus up for sale. But Kinard said he was under a doctor's care and should not have signed anything. (News, Source: AP)
Thomas Kinkade has died: California artist Thomas Kinkade, whose brushwork paintings of idyllic landscapes, cottages and churches were big sellers for dealers across the country, died Friday, a family spokesman said.
Kinkade, 54, died at his home in Los Gatos in the San Francisco Bay Area of what appeared to be natural causes, David Satterfield said.
In recent years Kincade was responsible for the 'fan favorite' artwork "Graceland"(opposite) and later "Graceland Christmas" (below).
Kinkade's sentimental paintings, with their scenes of cottages, country gardens and churches in dewy morning light, were beloved by middlebrow America but reviled by the art establishment. The paintings generally depict tranquil scenes with lush landscaping and streams running nearby. Many contain images from Bible passages. |

Kinkade, a self-described devout Christian, claimed to be the nation's most collected living artist. His paintings and spin-off products were said to fetch some $100 million a year in sales, and to be in 10 million homes in the United States.
"I'm a warrior for light," he told the San Jose Mercury News in 2002, in reference to his technical skills but also the medieval practice of using light to symbolize the divine.
"With whatever talent and resources I have, I'm trying to bring light to penetrate the darkness many people feel."
Before Kinkade's Media Arts Group went private in the middle of the past decade, the company took in $32 million per quarter from 4,500 dealers across the country 10 years ago, according to the Mercury News.

He has slimmed down to 450 pounds thanks to dieting, walks in the park and swimming laps in his backyard pool.
OK, he's still more than a fifth of a ton but the guy -- Pete Vallee -- (shown opposite with Sonny West) can really belt out the Elvis hits. His vibrant baritone voice has vaulted him into Time magazine's Top 10 list of Elvis impersonators.

Big Elvis performs three times a day during the week for free at Bill's Gamblin' Hall and Saloon. The afternoon we saw him, the place was packed. Big Elvis was celebrating his 10th anniversary performing on the Strip.
After being treated to a rambling speech by his agent, Big Elvis asked his wife, Amanda, to dance for his next song. Part Hawaiian and part Filipino, the slim Amanda, who has an ELVIS PRESLEY tattoo on her neck, swayed in rhythm to "Blue Hawaii." With many in the audience saluting the performance with raised bar glasses and beer bottles, Big Elvis turned to his wife and smiled. The room erupted in applause.
Yakima Valley residents are not immune to harboring warm feelings for impersonators. Several weeks ago, Danny Vernon, from the Seattle area, brought his hip-swiveling Elvis to The Seasons Performance Hall in Yakima. He earned a well-deserved standing ovation, as he did last year when he performed before a standing-room-only crowd. Vernon offers a far more athletic version of Elvis the Pelvis than the sedentary Big Elvis, whose generous girth keeps him firmly planted in his gold-embroidered, high-back chair. Eco Elvis sings about sustainability: If there is any one person who can be recognized by just about any individual it would be the King of Rock — Elvis Presley.
Today he is one of the most popular celebrities to impersonate, but it would be false to assume that all Elvis impersonators are the same. In fact, a very different kind of Elvis impersonator recently paid a visit to Iowa State.
Abby Dubisar, assistant professor of English, is the instructor for the graduate level class English 611, “Seminar in Rhetorical Theory,” which she explains is “focused on rhetorics of activism, justice and social change.”
In order to show her students a unique form of activism, she invited Matt Riggs — or Eco Elvis (shown opposite), an Elvis impersonator who writes lyrics about environmental issues to the tune of popular Elvis Presley songs — to perform for her class and talk about his rhetorical strategies.

“I think the visit was a dynamic opportunity for my students to see creative activism in action,“ Dubisar says. “Eco Elvis not only wowed the class with his musical stylings, his talent as a vocalist and guitar-player and his incredible ability to rewrite Elvis songs to offer environmental messages, but he also articulated how he crafts his message to appeal to particular audiences, attracts attention and holds the attention of audiences of all ages, balances addressing controversial topics like food politics and population control with a humorous/parody-heavy style, and more.”
Matt Riggs, from Kansas City, Mo., was inspired to create the persona of Eco Elvis by his “love of the environment, Elvis music, Weird Al Yankovic, Dread Zeppelin” and the desire for a career away from an office cubicle. He has been donning a green jumpsuit, embellished with pop tabs, and performing his sustainability themed songs, such as “I reduce, I reuse, I recycle” and “Burnin’ Globe,” for 15 years.
“I look for songs that have refrains that match the subject I’m interested in writing about, either through rhyme, phrasing or both,” Riggs explains. “I then thoroughly research the subject, outline all the topics I want to cover in the song, and convert the outline structure to the verse and bridge structure of song. From that point on, it is writing the lyrics, setting them to music and refining the lyrics.”
He hopes the lyrics of his songs will encourage people to start working actively to improve the conditions of the planet in order to preserve the health of humans, animal welfare and Earth’s resources.
“Everything that’s important to us as human beings — our health, our children, our economy, our national security, our survival as a species — depends on a healthy environment,” he says.
He also uses lyrics to raise awareness for what he describes as “the most important issue we all have to deal with to save our species-population stabilization.” He wrote the song “Population Bomb” to address this issue.
In his performance for Dubisar’s class, Riggs demonstrated that not activism looks that same by adding a unique twist to the five canons of rhetoric. My review for this amazing Fan Film is long overdue, so I apologize to the creators up front. GRACELAND is a huge breath of fresh air in a Fan Film world flooded with Star Wars and Batman Fan Films. The reason being is that Graceland is both an X-FILES, and an ELVIS Fan Film, You don't see too many of either one of those around. GRACELAND tells the story of a waitress (in Graceland New York) who claims to have been impregnated by the King Of Rock N' Roll after a strange, abduction like encounter. The FBI gets the report and Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are on the case.
Mulder is played brilliantly by Dan Masucci who exhibits all the same bad habits, mannerisms, and dry jokes that make Fox such a great character. Masucci (who also Directs the Film) even looks alot like Duchovny. Dana Scully is played by Donna Hayes who also does a great job of portraying Her X-Files counterpart. The chemistry between Hayes and Masucci is perfect so their portrayl of the characters are second to none. Scully and Mulder travel to Graceland
New York to look into the claim and question any and all who might know something about the strange case including the woman named Priscilla who claims to be pregnant with Elvis's child. Scully of course is very skeptical about the Woman's claim and decides to do some lab work for proof positive. Mulder decides to look for answers elsewhere around town. Mulder gets a taste of Graceland's city life complete with Honky Tonk Bars and Elvis look-alike's. While visiting one particular Bar Mulder is encountered by a mysterious Man who claims that Mulder and Scully's life will be in danger if they continue their investigation. The Man tells Mulder to meet with one of His connections to hear the whole truth. Mulder agrees and meets with a man named Mr. Wai, a shadowy figure who claims to have all the answers that Mulder is looking for. Shocking secrets are revealed about Elvis and the conclusion Has You on the edge of Your seat.
I can't say enough good things about this film. Attention to every detail of the show from Morley Cigarettes down to Mulder's oral fixation are covered and make this a very believeable Fan Film that remains one hundred percent faithful to the look and feel of the original show. The film reminds Me of those quirky episodes of the X-Files which made You laugh and really made You think at the same time. Eat Your heart out Chris Carter! This film is brought to You by The Masucci Brothers (Dan and Joe) and Fountainhead Pictures. The film is currently available online thanks to the Comic Book Bin. Clips of the film are also available at the official website. The truth is still out there.

Old Denver police gym, built by donation from Elvis Presley, may be razed to make way for Walgreens: A piece of Elvis Presley and Denver Police Department history may be torn down to make way for a Walgreens.
Presley donated money to the department in 1971 for the completion of a gym in the name of a slain officer. The building, which housed the District 2 station, including the Nading-Presley Memorial Gym, at 3555 Colorado Blvd., is an attractive location, said Walgreens spokesman Robert Elfinger.

"We haven't signed a lease yet, but, yes, we are looking at that location," Elfinger said.
In 1971, Officer Merle Nading was killed while on duty by a gunman at East Colfax Avenue and Gaylord Street, according to police.
Presley, who was close friends with former Denver police Capt. Jerry Kennedy, was troubled by the news and donated $5,000 to the department, Kennedy said.
"One of Elvis' great loves was law enforcement. He was in town visiting and heard Merle was killed. He was visibly shaken hearing a police officer had been killed," Kennedy said.
The news of the station's demolition came as a surprise to Kennedy. "I am really sorry to hear that. How sad," he said. The department stopped using the gym when the District 2 station moved to its Holly Street location, said Raquel Lopez, spokeswoman for Denver police.
Friends with Elvis since he worked his concert security detail, Kennedy said "the King" was an extremely sincere man.
"He just did those kinds of things," he said.
Officials from Historic Denver and History Colorado were initially unaware of the building's significance but now have piqued interest.
"We had no idea, but it is being looked into now," said Shannon Haltiwanger, preservation communications manager for History Colorado. (News, Source: RyanParker, denvernews.com)

Elvis charms actress Jean Simmons and watches film sixty times!: In his engrossing autobiography, Sparks Fly Upward, film icon, Stewart Granger, includes a paragraph about his then wife, the beautiful Jean Simmons (Spartacus, Elmer Gantry, Young Bess, The Blue Lagoon) meeting Elvis (see photo opposite). A Duke who could've been King: Duke & The King to premiere April 22 at the Nashville Film Festival. New documentary reveals the compelling story of Elvis Presley’s former bass player. There’s danger in meeting one’s hero, especially if your hero becomes your boss and your boss happens to be the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Duke Bardwell learned that the hard way.
Part documentary, part concert film, Duke & The King tells the story of Bardwell, one of the great, unheralded talents in American music. Bardwell’s story demonstrates what can happen when the right words and music come together to alter destiny and, in doing so, offer a shot at redemption.
Duke & The King is produced and directed by Kris Wheeler of Canton, Georgia and Wayne Franklin of Chelsea, Alabama.

Blue Suede Shoes withdrawn from auction: These pair of Blue Suede Shoes were said to be signed by Elvis Presley in 1956 and the picture shown was said to prove it. Sadly though, the shoe he is signing is not the same as the one that was set to be auctioned off this weekend.
The shoe in the photo is clearly a slip on shoe, it certainly has no laces and therefore must in itself bring doubt onto the actual signed shoe.

Elvis Presley Memphis (Mini Book Review): Elvis Presley Memphis is a travel guide of sorts. From Elvis’ various Memphis residences, the Sun Studio, the original Piggly Wiggly and Ellis Auditorium to Graceland, Elvis’ favourite amusement park, Libertyland, and the Mid South Coliseum, the author brings to life the landmarks which were part of Elvis’ day-to-day existence and many of which helped shape his phenomenal career. Underlying the reader’s travel around Memphis is a minimalist biography of the King.
Released as part of the publisher’s MusicPlace Series, Mark Bernardo’s text is quite superficial at times but this is to be expected in the context of the many landmarks he covers in the book’s less than 150 pages. Elvis and Graceland - an appraiser's view: Elvis Presley was born Jan. 8, 1935, and he died Aug. 16, 1977. He left a legacy that continues to inspire many fans to this day. In addition to his mansion, Graceland, his mountain of hit records and his popular movies, Elvis still connects with collectors decades after his untimely death. Beloved by millions, Elvis was a star among stars.

Elvis' famous home is both a museum and a memorial. While the living room and kitchen certainly were throwbacks to the 1970s, the upstairs bedrooms were off limits in keeping with Elvis' tradition of only meeting guests on the main floor of the home. Graceland visitors are allowed to tour only the main floor and lower areas of the main house. The most interesting room was the famed Jungle Room, located just off the kitchen. Decorated in typical late 1960s/early 1970s era exotica furniture and accessories, this room was Elvis' informal music room where he played the guitar and sang with his friends.
Collectors are devoted to Elvis and what some call "Elvis-abilia" in a manner that differs from that of other celebrities or rock stars. Elvis was an icon, and while his hit records are valuable on today's secondary market, it is his global appeal that has attracted so many collectors to Elvis objects.
Elvis made a career out of connecting with his audiences. What's more, his personal decisions to serve in the military and to support American causes contribute to his widespread popular appeal.
The King of Rock 'n' Roll raised funds to help construct Hawaii's famed USS Arizona Memorial, assisted in the fight against drug abuse and helped underprivileged children. He was immortalized on a U.S. postage stamp in 1992. The Elvis stamp remains the most publicized stamp in U.S. history, yet its collectible value is rather low because so many — more than 500 million — were distributed. |

Many Elvis collectibles are quite pricey. His bejeweled stage costumes are on view at Graceland and some have sold to collectors ranging in price from $30,000 to $300,000. An early career leather jacket brought $37,000 from one collector at a sale.
Elvis was an avid collector of American automobiles, mainly Cadillacs dating from the 1950s through the 1970s. His classic cars are on display in a special exhibit at Graceland.
In addition, Elvis recordings continue to bring high prices. A Sun Record 45 rpm recording of "That's All Right" in its original paper sleeve sold for $1,100. Major fine artists also helped to further immortalize Elvis. Andy Warhol's pop art masterpiece of Elvis Presley from 1963 titled "Single Elvis" in silk-screen ink on a silvered background sold at auction for $3.3 million.

'Way Down' Jerry Scheff autobiography Review: Jerry Scheff, TCB Band bassist, has played behind some of the great names in popular music and spent several years in the US Navy before making his way to Los Angeles to begin the life of the session bassist, leading to his pivotal role in Elvis’ TCB band.
In his autobiography 'Way Down' Jerry Scheff gives us his view of some of music's biggest names as their audiences never saw them, tired at the end of a session, burned out after a show, inspired by a new song. Particularly interesting are his emotional insider tales of touring with the "Elvis Family".
Telling his story for the first time, he blends memories of childhood and adolescence with evocative anecdotes about studio sessions end encounters with a host of major stars - and while Jerry doesn’t bad-mouth anybody nor does he evade the topic of the pretty heavy-duty drug taking of that particular era.

’The Original Elvis Tribute’ has arrived in Copenhagen!: Bobby Wood, Mary & Ginger Holladay, Duke Bardwell, Jerome ‘Stump’ Monroe, Robert Washington and Carl Bradychok all arrived at Copenhagen airport yesterday, tired after the long flights but very excited about the coming shows in Sweden, Finland, Luxembourg, Norway and Holland.
“I’m SO looking forward to the shows!”, Duke stated with his always contageous enthusiasm, while Ginger Holladay added: “I’m really looking forward to working with this great band and singing for the European fans for the first time. What Elvis left us what something very special, and it’s an honor for us to be paying tribute to this great man”. The chemistry in the band is great (I guess a few rounds of Carlsberg always does the trick!)

"Memphis Legend" Ernie Barrasso Dies: Memphis legend Ernie Barrasso passed away last Saturday 31 March after a long illness. Ernie lived his life with style and humour, generosity, and charm. His big thrill came after running with Red West and the Elvis Gang; he used to join them when they rented out the roller skating rink and the movie theatres after hours with Elvis and his many friends.
He hung around with the guys from not only Catholic schools, but Humes High and all the schools in Memphis. His big thrill came after running with Red West and the Elvis Gang. One afternoon while watching television at Elvis’ house, an advertisement came on the TV showing the new Thunderbird sport car for Ford Motor Company. Elvis asked Ernie if he had seen the car, because he thought it was really cool, and that there was only a few Ford dealerships that were allowed to sell the car, as it was a limited edition. Ernie told Elvis that they had a red one on the showroom floor where he worked. Elvis told him he wanted to come by the next morning to

see it. Elvis met Ernie at the lot, saw the car and told Ernie “he would take it”. After doing the paperwork Elvis got in the car and someone snapped a picture of Elvis sitting in the front seat with Ernie standing by the open door. Ernie always wanted to open a nightclub so he was always looking for a location to follow his dream.
Eventually Ernie achieved his dream and opened several nightclubs including the Thunderbird Lounge, and Memphis' disco “Club Caesar” and “The Godfather” in Overton Park Square buying the actual car with the gunshots from MGM studios and placing for customers to see it.
He will truly be missed and always loved by family and friends. He is survived by his sister, Rosanne Barrasso and brother-in-law, Nick Luciano who will miss him greatly, but they know he is in heaven.

Elvis’ Longtime Friend Bill Morris Featured in Memphis Magazine: Bill Morris, former Shelby County Sheriff, mayor, and close friend of Elvis is featured in the April issue of Memphis Magazine. Bill Morris talks of his life in the article "Taking Care of Business: The Bill Morris Scrapbook."
Memphis Magazine writer John Branston writes about Morris's childhood, friendship with Elvis, career, and years spent in politics. Morris shares photos from his personal collection including several of his time spent with Elvis.
Bill Morris describes the fun and playful side of the man who brought rock 'n' roll to the forefront.
"Elvis was youthful and playful. We would shoot roman candles at each other and use garbage can lids to defend ourselves," said Morris.
Morris also describes Elvis as a giving man who often spent his fame and fortune helping others in Memphis and across the world.
"When he made his first money, he gave $50,000 to the city to distribute to charity. He wrote checks to St. Jude early on and lot of them. I asked that the trauma center at The Med be named in his honor, because I thought it reflected another side of Elvis beyond his talents as a performer."

and Bill at the Jaycees Awards where Morris sponsored Elvis for the "Ten Outstanding Young Men" award given by the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce - the only award Elvis ever accepted in person.
After the awards show, as a token of their friendship, Elvis gave Bill and his wife, Ann, a "Taking Care of Business" and "Tender Love and Care" necklace. Bill Morris still wears the necklace to this day.
Bill Morris has been at the center of Memphis history for over 40 years and played a pivotal role in Memphis politics and law enforcement.

Madonna To Surpass Elvis On All-Time #1 Albums: Madonna is due to overtake Elvis Presley as the solo artist with the most Number 1 albums. The star's new record MDNA is 29,000 copies ahead in the race to the top spot this weekend, according to the Official Charts Company.
The news will be a relief to Madonna as her recent single didn’t even make the Top 20.
As EIN contributor Brian Quinn notes, Elvis' last No.1 album in the UK was 'The King' in 2006 - some 29 years after his death. Will Madonna be getting No.1 albums 29 years after her death? I doubt it. Further, Elvis still has more No1 single hits in the UK than either The Beatles or Madonna with 21. He also has more No.2 singles than The Beatles or Madonna and been on the UK Charts for more weeks than any other artist/group. Of course, Elvis still has a chance to get more No.1 albums in the future.

Three new FTD Releases for late April: Three new FTD releases have been announced for late April release, one soundboard, one book and a double-vinyl Promised Land.
- 'Another Saturday Night' 1975 soundboard: A previously unreleased concert, from June 7 1975 Evening Show not even on a bootleg audience recording, plus three well-chosen bonus tracks! If one place is to be picked as the most important in the career of Elvis Presley, it is without doubt Shreveport in the northwest part of Louisiana. The exposure that Elvis got through the radio broadcast of The Louisiana Hayride in 1954-56 was one of the key factors of establishing the early part of his career. With the exception of Las Vegas, there is no place where Elvis played more shows, and his return to the city in 1975 was like a homecoming to both Elvis and the many fans he had there since he started out. We have chosen to release the soundboard from the evening show of June 7 – definitely a show that Elvis and the audience truly enjoy, and with a great set list featuring old and new favourites.

'Such A Night in Pearl Harbour' - OUT NOW through Elvis Dealers: MRS in association with JAT Productions new release ‘Such A Night in Pearl Harbor’ is OUT NOW through local Elvis dealers - although the AMAZON release date is still April 2, 2012. It contains the completely new re-mastered CD of Elvis’ performance of the benefit concert at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on March 25th 1961 to aid of the USS Arizona Memorial Fund.
The quality is of this concert is far superior than anything of this ever released before and will now be considered, one of the best Elvis concert recordings up until that time. The audio was re-mastered at Studio D who did such astounding work on the recent MRS 'Hayride' release.
Elvis performs 15 songs and sings every one as if it were the first time he had ever presented them to an audience.
Also included for the first time ever, is the 30 minute radio broadcast from Hawaii a week before Elvis’ arrival. It promoted the concert for the memorial fund, playing selected tracks from Elvis’ Christmas and ‘His Hand

in Mine’ album, released at that time including words by Elvis Presley.
As a bonus, the CD is accompanied by a 100 page hard back book that contains many rare photographs with extensive and informative linear notes detailing Elvis’ arrival and performance in Hawaii.
